Types of Printing Techniques Used in Fashion Design and their Origin

We all know that there are four main printing techniques used all around the globe. But did you know there are a total of six printing methods used for textile printing? Read all about them in this blog.

Printing techniques have been a part of textile designing since ancient times. Earlier people used these to print on the garment. But with improvements in technology, these methods have changed and become a lot easier.

The need for these printing techniques has increased in modern times with the increase in the demand for fashion designing dress in public. Knowing about these techniques is important if you are pursuing your diploma in fashion designing as it is the basics and origin of fashion designing from ancient times.

Woodblock Printing Technique

This method is the best for those who like a vintage look in their outfit. Woodblock printing is used on natural fabrics to get the best result. This method is used on cotton, linen and even silk. As they soak up the colour well and give out the best look. 

The woodblock printing method is complex but works great. This can be time taking, as for every colour used in the design a separate lock is carved. So, long and heavy designs are carved first and printed on the fabric. Then, other smaller and lighter designs are carved and printed. As it is difficult to carve and print smaller details of the design, a special method called coppering is used. In this method, copper and brass strips are driven into the wooden blocks to print the fine design details onto the fabric. 

In this method, the blocks are dipped in colour and then firmly pressed on the fabric till the design is printed. If the blocks are pressed too hard then colour can smudge in the fabric, resulting in a damaged fabric and design. But if pressed too firmly this could result in a blurry print. So, the printing needs an experience to manage the pressure of the press. 

This woodblock printing is used from the beginning of AD 220(1). This method was first used in Asia, several centuries before Europe. China was the first to use woodblock printing. They used this method to print solid text. Much later after the invention of the moveable printing technique by Bi Sheng, during the Northern Shang dynasty, the Europeans started using this printing technique.

Cylinder Printing Technique

Cylinder printing is nearly the same as wooden block printing. This process has been used since the 18th century. Where the cylinder press was used to print the fabric. The only difference between woodblock printing and cylinder printing is the printing method. In woodblock printing, colour was taken on the carved block and then pressed on the fabric with hands. But, in cylindrical printing, the fabric is rolled from a series of cylindrical rollers, which has the design engraved on it. Then the colour is printed on the fabric with a press of rollers. There are different sizes of rollers used for printing, where people can even use six colours at the same time to print the fabric. This method is faster than the block printing method as they can print longer and smaller details of the design in a shorter duration of time. This printed fabric is sent through a drying chamber to get the colour dry quickly. 

There is no change in the printing quality on the fabric than the block printing technique but it is a faster and efficient method to use. But this method is suitable for lighter colours as the bright colours are not that easy to print using cylinder press technique.

Screen Printing Method

Screen printing is one of the most popular methods of printing. This method is used in every part of the world for smaller printing of garments. It is used for the printing of pre-stitched garments like t-shirts or even canvas bags. In this method, a nylon screen is mounted on a metal frame and a stencil is cut to block the parts of the screen forming the design to be printed. Then the ink is poured on the screen and rubbed using a frame. This will make the ink to get onto the fabric in the design stencil kept on the screen. A large variety of inks are available for screen printing methods for adding special effects to the design. 

Just like the block printing method, screen printing also originated from China during the 18th century. This was first used during the Shang dynasty. Later in time, this technique was opted by other Asian countries like Japan. 

It then took its path towards European countries, but it could not get its popularity in the beginning as the supply was limited. Only after the Chinese bought silk plates for screen printing and increased its supply, it got popularity and became one of the most used techniques today. 

Hot Press Printing

This is so far the easiest technique in printing. In this method, like the name suggests, heat is used to print the design on the fabric. These machines consist of a hot plate, with a temperature-pressure controller and a handle is used to press down the plate on the rubber panel on which the fabric to be designed is placed. Then the plates with high temperature are pressed on the fabric which prints the design on the fabric.

Dye-Sublimation Printing Technique

This is a digital printing technique that uses a heat press to print the design. This technique uses all colours that work with polyester and polymer fabrics. This is used for decorating items with sublimation surfaces.

This method is also known as the direct to garment method. The design is directly printed on textile or garment using the inkjet technology. These inkjets are placed on the top of the fabric and are given design as an input, then the design is printed automatically with the inkjets.

Photojournalism is a form of journalism where; images are used to tell a story. Not just the still images but in some cases, videos are also used to tell the story.

Photojournalism is a part of a photography course yet it is different from the other photography fields. As it requires an ethical frame and honesty to tell the truth behind every story. It contributes photos to the media for communication between society. 

If we put together what is photojournalism in simple words, we can say it is the art of telling stories using images. Photojournalists are individuals who have a degree in photography and photojournalism. Their work is seen in newspapers, magazines and other visual media like blogs. In some cases, photojournalists work with the reporters to click images while the writer gives the story. This simply means that the photographer takes the images of the story while the journalist writes the story of the event.

Photojournalism isn’t just popular because the younger generation is attracted to it. It has its own history. While cameras were already invented at the beginning of the 19th century. Photojournalism came into the picture at a later stage of time, that is with the launch of picture magazines in the 1920s and the 1930s. When the first photo magazine was launched, the majority of pictures published were from the war times. So, the history of photojournalism is considered to start from the times of the first war.  

The main contact between the public and the war zone was photography, which was published in the magazines. People showed a lot of interest in the photo magazine, as they wanted to know all that was happening in the war zone. And this led to an increase in the demand for photojournalism.

Photojournalism came to India in the year 1840(1), only after a year of the announcement of the daguerreotype and calotype photojournalism in France. When photojournalism came to India in the 1840s it was not much popular among its citizens.

Initially, when photojournalism came to India, it was not very active at first. But after the establishments of commercial studios in the city of Calcutta, the demand for photo-journalism increased. While India was under British rule, all the cameras were used by the English photographers to take pictures of the country and the beautiful nature of India.

When the first war of independence took place in India around the year 1857, photojournalism and the demand for newspapers increased rapidly. When photojournalists first took the pictures of the war zone it became the first-ever photos clicked. This increased the demand for newspapers in India to the highest of all times. Raja Deen Dayal was considered to be the first-ever photojournalist ever in the history of India.

While some think photojournalism has changed over time, experts at Photography institutes in India say that it has not. Because, even with the newer methods of publishing their images and putting forward their point of view, they still use the traditional way of photography. Everyone knows that photojournalism never goes out of trend as the need for newspapers and magazines has always had its importance in everyday life.

The golden age of photojournalism is said to be from the year 1930 to 1970, as there were a lot of newer and better innovations. The flashbulb and compact lenses 35 mm were created during this time, which made cameras even more portable. The photo magazines evolved to a great height and started to employ more and more as the demand for photojournalists increased.  

At this point, women also started to get into the field of photojournalism and Margaret Bourke was the first-ever female photojournalist in the world. And later in the time, more female journalists were employed like Dorothea Lange by the farm security admin so that they could document the great depression.
