Dard Hunter : miscellaneous thoughts and reflections / compiled by Robert E. Massmann
William Joseph "Dard" Hunter (November 29, 1883 – February 20, 1966) was an American authority on printing, paper, and papermaking, especially by hand. He is often credited as one of the influences in the resurgence in fine hand papermaking as a craft and an art form in the United States. That legacy can be felt on our campus with the continued tradition of hand papermaking at the Center for the Book.
Today's item includes many interesting elements, including two books, and a 3-D model of Hunters paper mill at Lime Rock, both made in part using paper that was made at the mill.
"Two-volume set of shaped books: volume 1 is shaped like the front of Hunter's mill at Lime Rock with leatherette spine and hand-colored pictorial label. Volume 2 is round to resemble a millstone in two sections, with common spine and printed label, and samples of paper made by hand at the mill.
Both of the volumes sewn by hand. Boards covered with and pages made of handmade Hunter paper. Printed pages in both volumes tipped onto the handmade leaves.
Slipcase for the set is a full 3-dimensional model of Hunter's mill at Lime Rock. It is also covered with the same handmade paper from the last lot produced at the mill at Lime Rock. Hand-colored and detailed.
Paper label on model has text: "Dard Hunter [D]oll [H]ouse. Model of Dard Hunter's paper mill at Lime Rock, Connecticut; covered with handmade paper, unfinished from the last lot produced at the mill. It was purchased in 1928, and closed in 1931. In 1955 it was completely destroyed by a flood." --Catalog

This bright blue and green bubble paper will help get this day started right. Papermaker @helenhiebert layered the two colors of paper pulp to make this eye catching sheet. I think it will be perfect for endsheets, a surprise when you open the cover. #bookbinding #bookarts #handpapermaking #papermaking #helenheibert #atlantabookarts (at Big River Bindery) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-KCiWCJzBz/?igshid=1mkpfiqt0jycg

Delighted to have papermaker Mary Ashton and poet Kathleen Flenniken come by to sign our collaborative @handpapermaking broadside. Shipping off to art director @alta_l_price to finish the editioning, and grateful to work with talented women. (Especially and including @boundbycooksey who carefully mounted the paper to carrier sheets which allowed for consistent registration with deckled sheets, and @coxswainpress who peeled them off! #handpapermaking #letterpress #washingtonwomenartists #broadside #bookarts https://www.instagram.com/p/B3Hlq2Mh7u9/?igshid=ttyyw4hc88zh

Rhinoceri in Sonoma
Tumblr media
Due to a verrrry busy spring, we are completely behind on blog posts! Last November we were invited by Jenny Harp to be Visiting Artists at Sonoma State University. While we were there, we gave a lecture, held our first Spice Trade Potluck, offered another iteration of the Rhinoceros Reading Room, and held a sewing circle and a papermaking happening. All within two days!
We began with a lecture to students about the development of the project and how our ideas were evolving as we delved further into the constellation of ideas surrounding The Rhinoceros Project – colonialism, imperialism, habitat decimation, wonder, reconnecting with our bodies and the land, and the whole of the complexities of our time.
That evening, we hosted our first Spice Trade potluck. Durer’s Rhinoceros travelled to Lisbon via the newly discovered seafaring passage to and from India: down the west coast of Africa, around the Cape of Good Hope, back up the eastern coast, and across the Indian Ocean. In 1497, Vasco da Gama set out in search of this route in order to cut out the middlemen in the Mediterranean who had exclusive control on the spice trade. Operating on orders from the same Portuguese king who received our Rhinoceros in 1515, da Gama found a direct path to the city of Calicut, also known as The City of Spices, giving Portugal a firm hold on the spice trade as well as a site for colonization and growing empire.

We spent the next day in the printshop of the Sonoma State University Art Department.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The day consisted of a sewing circle and papermaking in the printshop. Participants were invited to make sheets of paper from pre-made watermarks - see below.

This watermark incorporates a pattern from Indian textiles. We will also be offering this watermark for sale on our “Support the Project” page soon!

It was a very chilly day for vats of pulp and wet hands!

Our friend CK Itamura came by the make paper and sew!

Sonoma, as well as Napa, Lake, and Mendocino Counties had recently been devastated by the 2017 North Bay fires. The struggles of the community were a part of the conversations around the sewing circle that day.

Below, art student Gio shares some amusing anecdotes while contributing stitches to the project.

As the day ended, we left wet papers drying on the windows of the printshop.

Paper Plains is a mobile paper-making studio that teaches free workshops to the public. We focus on hiring young artists from black, indigenous, lgbtqia+, and immigrant communities to lead workshops. Participants and instructors engage in a dialogue about the history of colonialism and invasive plants in Minnesota. The paper that participants make is embedded with native prairie seeds and can be planted at home. The experience helps diverse groups of people find common ground. Around this same time last year, I was preparing to travel to Timor-Leste to be the artist in residence with the Boneca de Ataúro in East Timor during the summer of 2016. I had absolutely no idea what fantastic adventures and wonderful new friends awaited me... In the spirit of recollection and appreciation, I would like to now share this collection of video clips from my time with the Boneca:
* Returning from Makili via the mountain route * Playing with the camera at Manu Koko-Rek * St. Peter's Festival in Makili * Footage of "Estocástico" at Fundação Oriente * Two mermaids of Adara performing with Boneca de Ataúro at Fundação Oriente. Choreography by Jen Shyu. Footage by David Palazón. * Maun João making sheets of canna lilly paper * Rama and Lorosae (details) * Singing contemporary and traditional songs from Makili during farewell party
And please help ensure the future of the Boneca de Ataúro through their fundraising campaign here: https://www.generosity.com/community-fundraising/boneca-de-atauro--4 (Plus you’ll get to see the amazing, stop motion animation, short film by David Palazón!)

A tour through San Francisco’s Shotwell Paper Mill in the Mission District.
Tumblr media
Shotwell’s entryway is mosaiced with ‘tiles’ of PAPER! The cattail tops are made of cattail paper!
Tumblr media
The wet area of the mill with the pretty well sound-proofed door to the beater room beyond. All that water is from our papermaking happening - stay tuned for an upcoming post!
Tumblr media
The beater room with spray out booth - envy that floor drain!
Tumblr media
The dry area with printmaking & bookbinding equipment & fantastic storage.
Tumblr media
All of the lighting is covered in handmade paper lampshades, with custom made frames and of course all the paper was made in the mill.
Tumblr media
Rags, the appropriately named shop Briard, poses in front of the appropriately pulp strewn beater room door. Rags gets really excited about the hose!
Thanks so much to Pam DeLuco for welcoming The Rhinoceros Project into her amazing space!
