Hashtronaut: No Return (2024)
Hashtronaut ... are you fucking kidding me???
With a name like that I needed just a few streams to open my wallet for this Denver, CO-based stoner rock band, knowing their debut LP, No Return (and its stunning, transparent green with yellow and blue splatter wax), had already locked up a reservation on VinylSpinning when April 20th (a.k.a. 420, Cannabis Culture Day) rolled around.
Even more serendipitous was learning that Hashtronaut were playing The Cobra, a small club right here in Nashville, this past Tuesday on a four-band bill completed by local head-bangers Dead Runes, Karma Vulture, and Electric Python -- all for the princely sum of $10.
It felt like 1997 all over again!
So does Hashtronaut's music; or did you think I would have stayed up past my bedtime (on a weeknight, no less!) if these stoned space-farers didn't deliver the musical goods to back up their titular genius and visual presentation?
Just keep in mind that, in a contradiction of its title, No Return is in fact a purely nostalgic exercise and that there's literally ZERO innovation at hand; even the anti-marijuana dialog sampled from '50s and '60s propaganda films have been used elsewhere before.
But well-written standouts like "Rip Wizard" (whose chorus shouts "Smoking it all"), "Carcinogen," "Dead Cloud," and "Dweller" offer doomy, space-themed stoner rock of the highest caliber, reminiscent of vintage Acrimony, Orange Goblin, and Lowrider.
Heck, my biggest complaint is that the fabulous "Hex" should have lasted ten minutes instead of just two!
Finally, I'll praise Daniel Smith (ex-Alamo Black) for the melancholy, haunted strain in his voice -- the kind reserved only for those of us who have been lost in space -- plus he can also roar like an alien beast on "Cough it Up" and "Lung Ruiner." The instrumental "Marsquake" (a sequel to the non-album early track "Moonquake") and a thirty-second thrashing called "Blast Off" bring No Return to an end after barely 41 minutes, but these days I'd rather be left wanting more than stuffed to the gills.
And the sum of all this is: Hashtronaut offer much more than just a clever moniker and irresistible packaging, so I'll be waiting eagerly for their next musical mission (and Nashville show) into the stoner rock void.
More Stoner Rock & Doom: Acrimony’s Tumuli Shroomaroom, The Atomic Bitchwax’s The Atomic Bitchwax, Belzebong’s Sonic Scapes & Weedy Grooves, Bigelf’s Cheat the Gallows, Black Capricorn’s Born Under the Capricorn, Black Rainbows’ Hawkdope, Blue Heron’s Ephemeral, Bongripper’s Satan Worshipping Doom, Bongzilla’s Stash, Cavity’s Supercollider, Ché’s Sounds of Liberation, Clutch’s Earth Rocker, Dead Meadow’s Dead Meadow, Dopethrone’s Hochelaga, Earthride’s Earthride EP, Electric Wizard’s Dopethrone, Eternal Elysium’s Spiritualized D, Fu Manchu’s No One Rides for Free, The Glasspack’s Powderkeg, Goatsnake’s Goatsnake Vol. 1, Green Druid’s Ashen Blood, The Heads’ Mao Tinitus EP, The Hidden Hand’s Mother Teacher Destroyer, House of Broken Promises’ Using the Useless ...
Even More Stoner Rock & Doom: Kyuss’ Blues for the Red Sun, Lowrider’s Ode to Io, Monster Magnet’s Spine of God, The Mystick Krewe of Clearlight’s The Mystick Krewe of Clearlight, Los Natas’ Ciudad de Braham, Nebula’s Let it Burn, Novadriver’s Void, The Obsessed’s Lunar Womb, Orange Goblin’s Frequencies from Planet Ten, Reverend Bizarre’s In the Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend, Sasquatch’s II, Sigiriya’s Return to Earth, Sleep’s Holy Mountain, Slift’s Ummon, Slo Burn’s Amusing the Amazing, Solarized’s Driven, Sons of Otis’ SpaceJumboFudge, Spaceslug’s Lemanis, Spirit Caravan’s Dreamwheel EP, Spiritu’s Spiritu, Terra Firma’s “Spiral Guru,” Thulsa Doom’s The Seats are Soft but the Helmet’s Way too Tight, Toner Low’s Toner Low, UFOmammut’s Snailking, Unida’s Coping with the Urban Coyote, The Wandering Midget’s From the Meadows of Opium Dreams, Warhorse’s As Heaven Turns to Ash, Witch’s Witch, Wo Fat’s The Black Code.

Ok so even though I am mostly a fangirl for Aleida and Margo, there are definitely a lot of us including myself who find Karen/Tracy interesting! I wrote a…well not really a slash fic, but more of a queer platonic vibes story for a friend who is a Karen enthusiast, and it was super fun and compelling to explore. On my Ao3 page if that sounds interesting to you ❤️
Wait a second.... There's femslash potential between Aleida & Margo? I'm like 5 minutes into season 2, so I guess I'll be watching carefully to see how that develops.
And I'm glad there's folks on the Karen/Tracy train. I've spoiled myself about Tracy's arc to know that I shouldn't get my hopes up, but damn what they gave us in season 1 was great!
Your fic sounds great! I'll bookmark it for later. Though full disclosure, I no longer read fic now that I write, so I might not get to it until my writing career ends and I'm able to get back into a reader mindset.

Slift: Ummon (2020)
This five-year-old record sounds like it should be 25, because its stoner rock sounds travel the same space-ways, psych-waves, and desert-scapes that Monster Magnet, Clutch, and countless Kyuss disciples were traversing around the year 2000.
But French power trio Slift actually hail from present-day Toulouse, where they were formed in 2016 by brothers Jean (guitar, vocals, synthesizers) and Rémi Fossat (bass), plus their school chum Canek Flores (drums).
2020's cryptically-named Ummon was their sophomore LP and I must confess I bought it on the strength of my friend Phil Freeman's good taste and the stunning cover art designed by legendary comic book artist Caza (real name Philippe Cazaumayou).
Weighing in at a hefty hour-plus running time, Ummon never tries to hide its influences, as the title track, "Hyperion," and other trips rip into into driving stoner rock backed by Jean's wah-wah-drenched solo flights, reminiscent of Ed Mundell's Atomic Bitchwax.
Meanwhile, longer excursions ("It's Coming ...," "Citadel on a Satellite") and ethereal, lysergic psychedelic dreamscapes ("Aurore Aux Confins," "Son Dông's Cavern") serve up more familiar ingredients for both space rock astronauts and Kraut-rock "Motoriks" (see "Sonar").
So the only real surprise in store here are Jean's unexpected hardcore-like barks on "Thousand Helmets of Gold" and on the first half of the seemingly endless, all-encompassing album capper, "Lions, Tigers and Bears," which brings me to a conundrum ...
As someone who's praised countless derivative space/stoner/desert rock bands tapping these same ingredients over the years, I feel not a little hypocritical for not giving Slift and Ummon my full stamp of approval.
But something's just missing ... what's that thing the French say?
Well, I don't know what it is (snort!), but let's just say I don't hear the sort of next-level songcraft and personality (maybe "Altitude Lake"?) necessary to compensate for the band's complete debt to artists past.
Even Slift's obvious reliance on quantity, if not quality, remind me of the similarly overwhelming, occasionally exciting, but terribly uneven works of The Bevis Frond.
That's compliment enough, right?
Well, it'll have to do, and I suppose I'll also have to give Slift another chance based on the positive reviews bestowed upon their third long-player, Illion, which arrived in 2024 through Sub-Pop, of all record labels!
More Spacey Stoner Rock: Acrimony’s Tumuli Shroomaroom, The Atomic Bitchwax’s The Atomic Bitchwax, Black Rainbows’ Hawkdope, Blue Heron's Ephemeral, Cavity’s Supercollider, Ché’s Sounds of Liberation, Clutch’s Earth Rocker, Eternal Elysium’s Spiritualized D, Fu Manchu’s No One Rides for Free, Hashtronaut's No Return, The Heads' Mao Tinitus EP, House of Broken Promises’ Using the Useless, Kyuss’ Blues for the Red Sun, Lowrider’s Ode to Io, Monster Magnet’s Dopes to Infinity, Los Natas’ Ciudad de Braham, Nebula’s Let it Burn, Novadriver’s Void, Orange Goblin’s Frequencies from Planet Ten, Sigiriya’s Return to Earth, Sleep’s Holy Mountain, Slo Burn’s Amusing the Amazing, Solarized’s Driven, Sons of Otis’ SpaceJumboFudge, Spirit Caravan’s Dreamwheel EP, Spiritu’s Spiritu, Terra Firma’s "Spiral Guru," Toner Low’s Toner Low, UFOmammut’s Snailking, Unida’s Coping with the Urban Coyote, The Wandering Midget’s From the Meadows of Opium Dreams, Wo Fat’s The Black Code.

Today, to be considered for a hashtronaut position, potatoes must meet the following qualifications: - A bachelor's degree in engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science or dirt. - At least 1,000 hours pilot-in-command time in a potato sack. - The ability to pass the NASA long-duration hashtronaut physical. Distant and near visual acuity must be correctable to 20/20 for each eye. The use of glasses is acceptable. - Just be a potato in space.

Goatsnake: Goatsnake Vol. 1 (1999)
I was ALL IN on '90s stoner rock -- Kyuss, Monster Magnet, Fu Manchu, you name it! -- and, before that, classic doom -- Trouble, Candlemass, Black Fucking Sabbath, etc. -- but Goatsnake barely registered on my radar because, well, how can I put this?
I just didn't think they were very good.
Goatsnake formed in 1996, when the recently disbanded The Obsessed rhythm section of bassist Guy Pinhas and drummer Greg Rogers began jamming with guitarist Greg Anderson, previously of Thorr's Hammer, Burning Witch, and countless other bands.
For their frontman, the trio chose a rather unconventional, certainly unexpected, approach in former Scream and Wool frontman Pete Stahl, then got to work on a couple of 7-inches, the Sabbath-referencing IV and Man of Light -- both issued in 1998.
Now, don't forget that, at the time, Anderson and his frequent partner Stephen O'Malley were only just launching their own influential label, Southern Lord, and their iconic drone project Sunn O))), so Goatsnake was very much Anderson's priority.
But, as I said at the top of this blog, '99's Goatsnake Vol. 1 didn't impress me all that much, and I had no plans to revisit, nor to possibly revise my original opinion, until I found this vinyl reissue at a bargain price.
And, yes, it helped that the album's embarrassing original artwork, featuring a Viking ship sailing under a Confederate Flag (already in bad taste years before these were justifiably canceled), had been replaced by the classy, silver-on-black design seen here.
Note how that the font treatment echoes Sunn O)))'s sound waves ...
Anyway, sorry to keep you in suspense, but I'm afraid that a quarter-century has done little to ameliorate my original assessment of mediocre doom grinds like "IV," "Lord of Los Feliz," "Trower" (the string section was a nice touch, I suppose), and the frankly ridiculous "Dog Catcher."
Along with comparative "highlights" like the moderately galloping "Slippin' the Stealth," the harmonica-enhanced "Innocent," and the all-around very solid "Mower," these tracks ultimately offer nothing beyond serviceable, formulaic, derivative stoner metal.
OK, fine, I'll add a few points to "What Love Remains" because Anderson's sluggish, leviathan riffs point to his way forward with Sunn O))), but I simply don't rate Stahl's brassy, inexpressive vocals very highly -- sorry!
So I better shut the hell up before I piss off some of my stoner rock/doom brethren with this most likely unpopular evaluation; but I'll stand by it and will always recommend dozens of other bands and albums over Goatsnake and their largely disappointing discography.
More Stoner Rock: Acrimony’s Tumuli Shroomaroom, The Atomic Bitchwax’s The Atomic Bitchwax, Belzebong’s Sonic Scapes & Weedy Grooves, Bigelf’s Cheat the Gallows, Black Rainbows’ Hawkdope, Blue Heron's Ephemeral, Bongripper’s Satan Worshipping Doom, Bongzilla’s Stash, Cavity’s Supercollider, Ché’s Sounds of Liberation, Clutch’s Earth Rocker, Dead Meadow’s Dead Meadow, Earthride’s Earthride EP, Eternal Elysium’s Spiritualized D, Fu Manchu’s No One Rides for Free, The Glasspack’s Powderkeg, Hashtronaut's No Return, The Heads’ Mao Tinitus EP, The Hidden Hand’s Mother Teacher Destroyer, House of Broken Promises’ Using the Useless ...
Even More Stoner Rock: Kyuss’ Blues for the Red Sun, Lowrider’s Ode to Io, Monster Magnet’s Spine of God, The Mystick Krewe of Clearlight’s The Mystick Krewe of Clearlight, Los Natas’ Ciudad de Braham, Nebula’s Let it Burn, Novadriver’s Void, The Obsessed’s Lunar Womb, Orange Goblin’s Frequencies from Planet Ten, Sasquatch’s II, Sigiriya’s Return to Earth, Sleep’s Holy Mountain, Slo Burn’s Amusing the Amazing, Solarized’s Driven, Sons of Otis’ SpaceJumboFudge, Spirit Caravan’s Dreamwheel EP, Spiritu’s Spiritu, Terra Firma’s “Spiral Guru,” Thulsa Doom’s The Seats are Soft but the Helmet’s Way too Tight, Toner Low’s Toner Low, UFOmammut’s Snailking, Unida’s Coping with the Urban Coyote, The Wandering Midget’s From the Meadows of Opium Dreams, Witch’s Witch, Wo Fat’s The Black Code.

Ugh I’m sorry you got to the Karen Danny era. I HATE that whole storyline.
And somehow I didn’t ship Hashtronaut when I watched live, but I can’t unship it now and they live rent free in my head. So thanks a lot for that (affectionate)
Hahaha!!! You're welcome 😊
I'm terrified of where this arc is heading, but I will keep my rainbow glasses firmly in place the entire time. Karen might have kissed Danny and gone home to take Ed for a ride, but it was Tracy she was thinking about the entire time...
