Hermanubis or Abraxas or ? (a Roman limestone relief) [3rd century AD] by Peter Via Flickr: Hermanubis or Abraxas or ? (a Roman limestone relief) [3rd century AD] - Christie's A wolf- (or dog-)headed deity on this Roman limestone relief from the 3rd century AD, depicting some form of offering scene. A syncretic, hybridised deity, taking up characteristics from different deities: a wolf head, crowned with sheaves of wheat, and holding a key, the snake-like legs perhaps more an indicator of the cosmic warrior god Abraxas (but Abraxas is usually represented with the head of a lion or cock, together with sword and shield) the rest of the god is human, clothed in animal skin; in his right hand, he holds a key, and in his left hand, a caduceus and sheaves of wheat (the caduceus is an attribute of Mercury, together with the ram depicted on the left), and also some 'poppies' (healing quality? pain reliever ! hypnotic !). A bearded man kneeling at the right, presenting a loaf of bread on an offering table, its support with a lion head and a feline paw. Finally we do not know what kind of deity we are dealing with here: wheat, key, caduceus, poppies,... - does seem to be rather benign: fertility and prosperity? and the offering is also rather harmless: a load of bread. “In classical mythology, Hermanubis (Ancient Greek: Ἑρμανοῦβις, romanized: Hermanoubis) was a god who combined Hermes (Greek mythology) with Anubis (Egyptian mythology). He is the son of Set and Nephthys.

Hermes' and Anubis's similar responsibilities (they were both conductors of souls) led to the god Hermanubis. He was popular during the period of Roman domination over Egypt. Depicted having a human body and a jackal head, with the sacred caduceus that belonged to the Greek god Hermes, he represented the Egyptian priesthood. He engaged in the investigation of truth.”

Biografía de F. G. Irwin.

El Mayor F.G. Irwin (1828–1892) nació el 19 de junio de 1828. El 8 de noviembre de 1842, se alistó en el Royal Sappers and Miners Corps (Real Cuerpo de Zapadores y Mineros) cuando tenía catorce años. Participó en la Gran Exposición en 1851 y recibió una medalla de bronce. Irwin se hizo Masón el 3 de junio de 1857 en la Logia Gibraltar no 325. Irwin permaneció en Gibraltar hasta 1862 y de allí se fue a Malta. En 1866 se trasladó a Bristol. Habiendo servido en las filas durante casi veinticuatro años, el 7 de mayo de 1866, Irwin fue nombrado Ayudante del 1er Cuerpo de Voluntarios de Ingenieros de Gloucestershire con el rango de Capitán. Permaneció en Bristol hasta su muerte en 1893.

Un notable masón, amigo y corresponsal de A.E. Waite, Wynn Westcott, Kenneth Mackenzie y William Woodman, Irwin también se convirtió en Adepto Principal del Colegio de Bristol de la Societas Rosicruciana In Anglia (SRIA). Lo más importante es que Irwin era miembro de los "Fratres Lucis" de Kenneth MacKenzie, la rama británica de la orden esotérica rosacruz que MacKenzie había sido encargado de fundar, y que más tarde se convirtió en la Orden Hermética de la Aurora Dorada en 1888. Esto se muestra claramente en la progresión de los templos. El templo de MacKenzie fue el templo número uno, el número dos fue el templo Hermanoubis de F.G. Irwin en Bristol, e Isis-Urania, fundado en 1888 por Woodman, Wescott y MacGregor Mathers, fue el templo número tres. El templo Isis-Urania se fundó, además, basado en los manuscritos cifrados de MacKenzie, que Wescott obtuvo de su viuda tras su muerte.
