If you use Alexa, Echo, or any other Amazon device, you have only 10 days to opt out of an experiment that leaves your personal privacy and security hanging in the balance.

On June 8, the merchant, Web host, and entertainment behemoth will automatically enroll the devices in Amazon Sidewalk. The new wireless mesh service will share a small slice of your Internet bandwidth with nearby neighbors who don’t have connectivity and help you to their bandwidth when you don’t have a connection.

By default, Amazon devices including Alexa, Echo, Ring, security cams, outdoor lights, motion sensors, and Tile trackers will enroll in the system. And since only a tiny fraction of people take the time to change default settings, that means millions of people will be co-opted into the program whether they know anything about it or not. Psychic Powers

Many psychic powers have been covered before, but few of the Cinematic ones are present. To be honest, Psychic Powers are just the sci-fi writers’ way of saying "Magic". A Magical Philosophy (Described eslewhere) can work and fully cover the abilities given to Psychics throughout fiction with ease.

But for those who want to maintain the Psychic-Magic-Ki distinctions, here are some qualities to do that.

Combat Visions (6 Point Quality, Pre-requisite (Supernatural Senses, Magic, Telepathy, or similar quality))

Using your secondary senses, the character gains an added insight against their enemies, granting them a +2 bonus to combat against them. Without this quality, a mental action must be spent to gain this insight with a Perception and Notice or Magic and Notice roll. Depending on the senses, the creatures targeted may be immune or resistant to it (such as Robots and the Undead being immune to Telepathy).

Hypnosis/Mesmerism

Just as a note, double the cost to hypnotize more than one person at a time (Roll Willpower (Doubled) to figure how many are affected (Int per Success Level)). Otherwise, one mental action is needed per target.

Remote Viewing (4-Point Quality)

The ability to see events and places over long distances. This usually requires meditation lasting at least several minutes. A Perception and Notice test is needed to determine what is seen and how far off.

1: The range is only 1 Yard per Perception level. 2: 10 Yards per Perception Level. 3: 100 Yards per Perception level 4: 500 Yards per Perception level. 5-9: SL Miles per Perception Level. 10+: 50 Miles per Perception level

A second Intelligence (Doubled) test is needed to recall all the information gathered. Use the Psychometry chart in Angel for this.

-Kinesis

These qualities all use Telekinesis are their basis, and unless contradicted, operate on the same wavelength.

Bio-Kinesis: 5 points per level

Bio-Kinetics are better called Protein Kinetics. But they do horrible things to animal life with just the merest thought or wonderful things. Bio-Kinetics can heal 2 damage per SL in a Willpower + BK test or deal Armor-ignoring damage to any target within range at the same rate. This is extremely painful and forces a Willpower + Constitution + Resistance (Pain) or Resistance (Powers) test against the attack roll to avoid being paralyzed with screaming pain. Biokinetics naturally heal slightly better than regular humans. Where they heal their constitution per day of rest, they heal their Constitution + Biokinetics level. It's very tempting for BKs to make minute changes in the body to cause massive harm, but the limits are what they are. Unless they have X-Ray Microscopic vision, targeting small parts to cause heart attacks and strokes is a no-go. What occurs when a BK attack is mass spectrum rupturing of cells that are insanely hard to focus. Strokes and heart attacks are the results of powerful BK attacks.

Electro-Magnetic Kinesis: 3 Points per level

This ability has had some stuff on it before, but I'll expand here. This is an Energy-manipulating ability that can also affect metals. On its own, it can create EM Shields (AV SL x 2/SL x 4 vs. Metal) or create sparks of energy dealing SL Electrical Damage at pistol ranges, and forcing electronics to make Constitution (or equivalent) rolls against the attack roll to resist shut down. Alternatively, against the flesh, it can be used to create a stream of stunning electrical current (resisted by either Con x 2 or Con + Will), putting a -2 to all actions for SL turns, dealing 1 damage per SL. This also halves the damage of an electrical attack.

When using Metals, it works like TK, but shields made of metal are either 3 x SL in AV or 4 x SL, depending on if it's a soft metal (like Gold or Copper) or a harder material (lead, iron, or steel).

It also has the basic abilities of material Kinesis types.

Material-Kinesis: 3 Points per level

Earth, Water, Air, and Wood. These elements are all commonly manipulated under the label of specific psychic powers. There are two ways to do this. One is to have TK with the Limited Use drawback applied once to the character. This is the more complex method.

The basic rule of being able to lift and manipulate SL Strength worth of material still holds, but in some cases, more fun can be had with the results.

Various constructs can be formed by manipulating the elements (each lasting 1 turn per level of Willpower per Success Level) to defend or attack enemies. This is also true of TK, but few Telekinetic see a need to do this out of sheer sloth and overconfidence.

To construct a weapon, she must decide what weapon she wants and gain enough success levels equal to the damage multiplier of the weapon. So, a pig sticker needs only 1 success level, but a claymore needs 5.

Each element has its own effects, and a subset element (such as paper) can have up to 3 points worth of special abilities in addition to the elemental abilities. Success Levels can be instead used by special abilities for the weapon, such as converting it to ranged (-3 Success levels) or other weapon modifiers expanded upon in other places, with 1 success level equal to 2 points. Making a rock spear Armor-Piercing would need 4 success levels.

Other items she can create (such as ride-able paper airplanes and ropes) are treated as transmutation spells, requiring the psychic to achieve a number of success levels equal to the cost of the spell effect as determined by the GM, but the time limit remains.

All elemental Kinetics need to have the material on hand to effect it, obviously.

Earthen Elements (Rocks, not metals) Are the sturdiest and toughest. Armor created with it varies depending on what's available. Soft materials (Sand, loose dirt) grant 2 x SL AV either as an armor constructor, or a quick shield. This increases to 3 x SL with softer rocks (Sandstone, mudstone) and 4 x SL for harder stones (Granite, Marble). All constructs grant a +1 to Strength when used. Outside of softer rocks, fine manipulation of sand and harder stones is done at a -2 Difficulty depending on the task. Soft materials have trouble forming hard weapons and objects/barriers well, and hard rocks have problems moving and being flexible/fast.

Water is the most common natural liquid manipulated. Controlling other liquids is possible, but invokes the limited use options. Changing water between its elemental forms takes only a single action. Water grants 3 points when forming bizarre weapons and abilities for its constructs instead of 2. Shields erected with water grant 3 x SL armor.

Air is the weird one. Because it's everywhere, there's always enough of it, but because it's invisible, it grants a +2 to all combat actions taken with it. When forming armor and defenses with it, though, it only provides 1 AV per SL or can be used to deflection bonus for other defense actions (1/2 SL added to the attempt).

Plants or Chlorophyll are also pretty weird. Wood and even green plants can provide the user with 3 x SL AV when used defensively. The Chloro-Kinetic can, however, generate and promote/restrict plant growth to always have the force they need (Depending on the species). This grants them a very effective green thumb and can even force plants to flower or produce fruits with simple tests.

Umbrakinesis – This strange ability manipulates darkness. It works as Telekinesis but has penalties or bonuses based on how much darkness there is around them. High Noon sunlight or being under a spotlight puts a -5 to the tests. Indoor Lightning puts things at -3. A windowed room with the lights off is at 0.

A room with the lights off and the blinds closed grants a +1. A night street in a city grants a +3. Midnight in the middle of the wilderness far from any city grants a +5.

By bending shadows, it can also provide a bonus to hiding, at +1 per 2 Success levels. Like Telekinesis, it can be maintained for several rounds.

Technopathy (5-Points per Level Quality)

You ARE a WIFI hotspot.

You can connect to electronic devices with your mind. This generally is limited to the normal operations of such devices. It works off similar ranges and attributes to Telepathy, but machines without AI do not really resist. Anti-Virus programs can interfere with your ‘hack’ of more advanced electronics (Difficulty set by the GM, usually negating 1 to 4 success levels depending on complexity) to similar results of a failed telepathy check. And Viruses can affect your mind if you aren't careful (resisted by Willpower).

Some Technopaths can power on devices when they were turned off. This is a Technopathy (not doubled) test to perform.

Telepathy (5-Points per Level Quality)

This functions as described in Angel, but each level extends the range and adds to all Telepathy rolls for each level beyond the first (range penalties apply, this describes the normal range). Use the basis set on the Supernatural Senses range chart.

1. Contact 2. 2 yards per Willpower 3. 10 yards per Willpower 4. 50 Yards per Willpower 5. 100 Yards per level of Willpower. Line of sight is no longer needed. 6. 200 Yards per level of Willpower. 7. 500 Yards per Willpower 8. 1 Mile per Willpower 9. 50 Miles per Willpower 10. 100 Miles per Willpower

Further, with a Willpower, Telepathy level, and Wild Card: Psychic Powers task, the psychic can attempt a psionic attack. This over-stimulates the brain and does minor damage, but largely is there to stun and knock out. This is resisted by a Willpower (doubled) roll from the target. On a failure, they must make a consciousness test against the attack or fall unconscious. If they remain conscious, all actions for a number of turns equal to the success levels of the attack, they are at a -1 penalty to all actions. If they pass the first roll, they just suffer a flat -1 to their actions for a full turn. This is an extremely draining move, no matter how powerful the telepath, it always incurs a -2 cumulative penalty to use which only dissipates when the psychic rests.

For extreme mental manipulations (altering memories and so on) an Intelligence + Telepathy + Wild Card (Psychic Powers) tasks are needed, but is hampered by the intelligence of the target (subtract target's intelligence from the roll) and is resisted by Willpower (doubled) roll. Simple minds are easy to influence, but the proud and the stubborn are difficult to manage (so qualities related to such things can be used to resist). Other factors and certain memory things can work to alter any such test.

If the roll fails, it deals the target's willpower in damage to the telepath from the backlash. Prepare for a nosebleed when this happens.

Psychics can defend against such attacks with a Willpower + Wild Card (Psychic Powers) task. Sorcerers and Mages can defend against Psychic attack/intrusion with a Willpower + Occultism + Magic test. Iron Mind, of course, negates it completely.

Note: messing with people’s memories is actually a HUGE DEAL with vast moral complications. Also, the White Council of Wizards may assume you’re a mage and try to chop off your head. This is less damaging than mental magic but still isn’t pretty or nice.

Telepathic Translator (5-Point Quality, Prerequisite: Telepathy)

You can make telepathic contact with a being and translate what they say automatically. This requires having the targets or the translation (for all parties) be in the range of the standard telepathic contact for its level. Once the link is established, the range it can be maintained is 3 steps higher than the Telepath’s normal level. Because it would be very awkward to hold a conversation while someone has a hand on both people’s heads.

Since the translation is automatic, nuance and details can be lost rather easily, though the full intent comes through. This does nothing for written languages.

I’ve been seeing a lot of those “there’s a real person behind the screen you’re sending hate to” posts circulating around the Swiftie community and it’s made me reconsider my place, or more lack of, in the community both past and presently and how online hate from this fandom has influenced that.

I guess in short, and to poke a little fun before getting into the serious part of this post, for a good 90% of my time in this fandom, I’ve felt like that Squidward window meme where I’m inside alone watching from afar as seemingly the rest of the fandom is out having fun together.

Now for the more serious stuff. To start this story, I want to take you back to a time that feels like lifetimes ago now; the beginning of 2015. 1989 had only been out a few months, I had successfully rebuilt my life and finished high school at the end of 2014 after having my world crash down over the span of 2011 - 2012, had amazing friends and what I thought was a ride or die family given how many major fights we had had yet still had each other’s backs. I was on a gap year and my then boyfriend of about two years and I were talking about leaving town and starting our lives together. Things seemed pretty amazing. But easy they come, easy they go as I soon realised.

Within the year of 2015, almost every part of my life was taken away from me. Even with volunteering and my usual day to day life, being on a gap year while not doing paid work messed with my mental health and sense of self worth within months. Not long after, I lost a friend without warning/explanation that I genuinely thought would be at my hypothetical future wedding. The rest of my friends were all at university and/or working everyday and it became real that I wasn’t as close to some of them as I thought and that school was the thing keeping us together. Around the same time, my family fell apart for the last time. My sister was removed by the police over her behavioural issues and I haven’t spoken to her since. Not long after, it was uncovered gotten us in thousands of dollars worth of debt and, despite their marriage breaking down, expected my mother to fix the damage. He moved out at the end of 2015 and despite everyone heralding how I was his favourite child for my whole life, went running back to my sister who mistreated him and would spend months at a time not talking to me only to call me when his parents were in town right up until I cut him off in late 2017. My extended family on both sides sided with him and my sister despite, again, them spending 20 years acting like I was the golden child. Again, I have not spoken to them for the last five years. The destruction of the family left my mother suicidal and bitter to the point she still says she cannot love anything, my brother and I included. It also pushed my brother to work up to 48 hours a week, meaning he wasn’t around. Given all of this, I stuck with my mother and decided to put off moving away, attended university here and ultimately based every decision around her not killing herself; a choice that put strain on my romantic relationship until it broke in late 2016. Once my father moved out, Centrelink refused to give my mother money, and so, despite my brother working full time and me part time, my mother, brother and I were only eating an average of once a day for about 8 months due to financial reasons and the debt my father left us in. It also meant that I wasn’t medicated for my bipolar/ptsd or going to see my psychiatrist like I should because we just could not afford it.

During this time, there felt like there was exactly one unchanging thing in my life; being part of the Taylor Swift fandom. And I’m well aware that some of you see that as unhealthy and stupid; god knows I see just how unhealthy it was now, but that’s how it felt. 

So I spent so much of the 1989 era trying to do all I could to interact with people in the fandom, get Taylor’s attention, become a “big blog” and everything else the fandom was doing at the time to no avail. But, alongside this when I held opinions that are now seen as popular surrounding the era feeling like it was made for outsiders, 1989 as an album feeling less personal and not liking Tayvin, I expressed them here. In return, I received dozens of hate anons a day for over a year ranging from “Fuck you you fucking whore” to “Nobody, especially Taylor, will ever love or notice you so you may as well kill yourself now”.

Likewise, in the Reputation era, after I felt I had found my connection again with Taylor and honestly, loved her more than ever, I mentioned that I loved how much of a recovery album Reputation was as well as saying that I thought the Delicate music video was the perfect representation of not only the song, but Reputation as a whole. Despite Taylor talking about her mental struggles, I still receive anons along the lines of “Taylor’s not fucked up like you, you crazy bitch”.

In the seven or so years I’ve been in this fandom, I received ONE apology for anon hate. In early 2017, I was privileged enough to go away to a spot without wifi for a week and returned to a bunch of hate messages alongside one simply saying “Please do not have actually killed yourself. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it. Please just answer this”.

Thankfully, somewhere in between the 1989 era and the Reputation era, I reached a point where I was healthy enough to just block anon hate and moved on with my day. Additionally, thankfully I learned that my value does not come from the opinion of others the first time my life fell apart. Honestly though? I fear for the day I hear about someone like me who hasn’t come to that realisation being targeted like I was because I know in my heart that things could have gone very differently for me and that anon hate could have been the thing that pushed me over the edge.

Despite being able to block it however, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel like it had an impact on me. And some of that is on me. When I decided I wasn’t going to be an active member of the fandom anymore in the middle of the 1989 era and in the years since, I went from following over 1000 blogs to 50. I no longer try to reach out to people to be friends. At best, I go through relevant tags once every few weeks when I’m bored instead of daily like I used to. But they’re choices I wouldn’t have made if I hadn’t felt unwelcome in the fandom.

I’d also be lying if I said it didn’t make me sad to think about the what ifs of if I didn’t make those choices. Like sometimes it feels like I should have just “played the game” and followed the fandom trends, but it upsets me to feel like I had to be someone I’m not years ago just to participate properly in the fandom now. I mean I know this sounds up myself, but I honestly feel like I could add so much to this fandom. There’s so many ideas I have for cool interaction nights and so on, but honestly it just does not feel like it’s worth doing because I’m not a big enough blog to pull it off on my own and I’m not close to any of the people who hold these kind of things to try run it through them. And again, that just makes me sad.

Anyway, I’ve written a novel here, but I just want to reestablish that yes, every person that has received hate messages on this site is a real person with real feelings and real circumstances happening behind the screen and this is just one case of that.

BnHA Chapter 180: Deku VS Gentle ~Conclusion~

Previously on BnHA: The U.A. cultural festival kicked off. Gentle and Deku continued to duke it out. Gentle tried to squish Deku under some stretchy air, but Deku unleashed his inner hobbit and fucking burrowed his way free. There was a lot of other ridiculous stuff like jacket-pulling and a lot of rough and tumble nonsense, and then Gentle had a tragic flashback. Basically he wanted to be a hero back in high school, but was something of a disaster, and was eventually expelled after a botched rescue attempt. Four years later he ran into an old classmate who had become a successful hero himself. Said classmate had no idea who Gentle was. The sting of this incident gave Gentle the motivation to study and train until he mastered his quirk, tired of being a failure. Back in the present, Deku’s attempts at trying to talk sense into him fell on deaf ears, and we were promised a conclusion in the next chapter. Which is this chapter! So bring it on!

Today on BnHA: Gentle and Deku stare at each other angrily while gripping each other’s hands and kind of pushing each other back and forth aggressively. It’s pretty intense but also ridiculous. Meanwhile La Brava flees into the woods with her laptop, desperate to hack U.A.’s security and complete Gentle’s mission. Gentle is all “I have to finish this quickly!” and starts bouncing around not really doing anything. Finally, Deku finishes him off with a shoot style roundhouse kick. He sportingly tells Gentle it was a difficult fight (which is a straight up lie but Deku is a nice person okay), right as La Brava comes running back and realizes Gentle has lost. She starts cutely beating Deku with her fists while crying, and Gentle realizes the situation he’s put her in, and that his failure means that she’ll be arrested as well. So he flings Deku away, attempting to make it look like the battle never occurred, and then he hugs La Brava, and then the pros arrive and he surrenders.

After the quarter ended in early June, I flew to Denver to see my parents and tie up some important loose ends before my trip.  On June 17, I caught my first flight from Denver International Airport and tried to sleep on the seven hour flight to Keflavik.

Day 1

Our flight was a little late getting out of Denver, so we landed at around 9:30 local time in Iceland.  Running on about 3.5 hours of sleep, I got my rental car and headed straight for my 11:00 appointment at the Blue Lagoon.  I was running about an hour late, of course, but they didn’t seem to mind at all.  In fact, it was one of the best customer service experiences I’ve ever had.  If I went down the wrong hallway, they immediately pointed me in the right direction or let me through with my wristband anyway.  The sushi I had was nourishing after all that time in the air.  The water was nothing short of spectacular: milky white, warm and relaxing.  Two steam baths and a sauna were open and accessible in the corner and both were quite necessary.  One kiosk on the left hand side sold mud masks, like the Dead Sea, and offered a silica one for free.  Two rounds of the silica mask made the skin on my face feel as happy as it had been in years.  Another kiosk in the corner sold beer and drinks, so I got the Icelandic national brew: Gull.  Drinking and driving in Iceland is strictly forbidden, so I wanted to make sure to limit myself to only two drinks on my trip, this being one of them.  I’ll get to the other one later.  Gull isn’t too bad, but not too great.  Something of a standard macro lager, a few shades better than Rainier.  Enjoying my drink slowly allowed me to make friends with some folks around me from the Pacific Northwest, which definitely made the transition to a foreign land a little easier.  My only regret from a place like this is that eventually you’ll have to leave.  But I’ll be back...

I finally came upon the one I wanted: Lebowskibar.  It was absolutely kitsch, sure, but I’m a sucker for anything to do with The Big Lebowski.  I had to have my White Russian, and a “hell of a Caucasian” it was.

Day 2

Got a late start after sleeping off the jetlag and went right for what I really came for: Hákarl.  I knew that fermented shark was pretty gnarly, but I wasn’t gonna miss it. The spot to go find shark is on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula at the  Bjarnarhöfn Shark Museum.  The museum is located pretty well out in the middle of nowhere, about two hours up the road from Akranes. I didn’t get on the road until almost noon, so I thought I was out of time.  I quickly grabbed a cup of coffee and a full tank of gas (around 250ISK per litre!) found my way.  I found out later I had quite a bit of sunlight to work with. The Shark Museum itself is a small house on a windswept headland on the northern side of the peninsula.  A spectacular view.  Undaunted, I paid my 1000 ISK to see the place.  The museum itself is a rather eclectic collection of maritime memorabilia and Icelandic antiques.  The collection seemed almost unorganized, but I wasn’t there for the collection, I was there for the shark.  The presentation was short, but interesting: a burly Icelander explains how the shark is poisonous when eaten fresh because it doesn’t process urine, so they have to basically let the thing rot in wooden tubs before letting it dry out back for a while, leading to its notorious smell.  The smell can best be described as a mix of ammonia and urine, which makes sense, and though it is indeed quite foul it’s not nearly as strong or permeating as I expected it to be.  It tasted much better than it smelled: like a slightly buttery fish, nothing too offensive.  After a short peek at the collection, the burly Icelander directs you to the drying house out back.  That’s where the magic happens, and the food gets its stinky reputation. Where the fish was pretty mild, the drying house is extremely pungent and stings your nose.  The visual appearance of the shark as its cured is no more appealing: brown, crusty, and oozing with liquid.  Overall though, the shark wasn’t too bad.  A man in need could almost make a meal out of the stuff, and definitely could make a side dish.

Next stop was Kirkjufell and the town of Grundarfjörður about 30 minutes further out along the peninsula.  Kirkjufell was featured on seasons six and seven of Game of Thrones, which was totally why I wanted to see it and not because it was a symbol of Iceland.  But that was a nice perk too.  I grabbed a hot dog in  Grundarfjörður and found a nice little cafe that was also a small library, a great find along the trail.  The mountain itself is impressive, and the nearby stream is fed by a sprawling waterfall across the highway. Very picturesque.  

My third and final stop was the Vatnshellir Cave on the far end of the peninsula, about another hour out.  I pull in at around 17:50, about ten minutes before they close for the day, and this place is remote.  I mean even the WiFi router I brought in the car with me, the one that worked for my entire Iceland trip, couldn’t find anything out there.  If there was an “end of the Earth”, this was it.  The cave itself is an experience onto itself.  They fit you with a helmet and a flashlight, and a friendly guide takes you down a long spiral metal staircase made slick by constant water dripping through the soil.  The cave was created by a volcanic explosion, like pretty much everything else on this island, and is layered with eons of nature’s bidding.  Afteer some time exploring the worn lava rock, you go down another staircase: this one even longer (about 40 meters) and slicker.  At the end of the cave tour, the guide has us all close our eyes and turn out our lights. My final day in Iceland I wanted to pack in anything else I missed before I took off to Amsterdam.  I got up and headed straight back too Reykjavik.  The Alþingi building is beautiful from the outside, and claims to be the oldest active parliament in the world, however, they had no tours for the day.  Undaunted, I stumbled to the Settlement Exhibition up the street, colloquially called 871+- 2, in reference to the probably year Iceland was first settled by Vikings, within a range of a year or two. He even has a couple of bronze casts of human penises.  The voice on the audio guide never explains why he has such a collection, and why he decided to display it on the wall for everyone to see, but boy does he go into detail about each penis.  Far more than I wanted to know, but still worth a chuckle.  

The Icelandic Rock and Roll Museum was only 30 more minutes down the road in Reykjanesbær , and contained a well curated mix of materials dating back to the early days and some bands I had never heard of. I mostly just went to geek on bunch of Björk and Sigur Rós and Of Monsters and Men.  The collection did not disappoint.  The museum was interactive, and even had a karaoke booth (that wasn’t soundproof, as I found out later).  I was able to get my fill of guitars and strange costumes and even a band made out of wood.  Fans of MoPop in Seattle (formerly known as the Experience Music Project) might be a little underwhelmed, but this was a fun tribute to the fascinating music history of such a tiny place. I may have spent a little too much time and energy in the karaoke room singing some of my favorites; the woman working at the desk barged in about halfway through song six (I think?) to tell me the room wasn’t soundproof. Oops.

My next two stops were a bit far away, and it was already 3pm, so I needed to hit the road. Only about nine more hours of sunlight.  Reykjadalur Hot Springs got some rave reviews on YouTube, and was only about 90 minutes up the road. Or so I thought.  The parking lot sits down at the bottom of a steep mountain pass near the town of Hveragerði.  A little coffee shop greets visitors, but it had shut down for the day.  It was pretty chili outside so I grabbed my sweatshirt for what I thought was a short walk to the river. Turns out the springs itself is a three kilometer walk up the hill.  And people swim in the river.  I immediately regretted forgetting both my hiking shoes and my swimsuit.  The hike up to the springs is stunning.  Sweeping valleys and steep canyons give way to open fields full of sheep.  So many sheep.  They graze in the valley, drink some of the colder water downstream, and even walk right up towards the trail for the freshest grass.  Off in the distance steam literally billows out of the earth.  The only time I’ve ever seen anything like it was at Yellowstone, but this was different. It was....quiet. Peaceful. The smell of sulfur carries with the wind.  Near the end of the hike, you walk right through one of those steam vents, which was somehow simultaneously refreshing and blinding.  The hot springs themselves are more like a spot in the river.  Something in the soil is volcanic, so the ground heats the water to some naturally balmy temperatures. The bathing area is nearly the opposite of the Blue Lagoon.  There are no amenities, there is no one bringing you a drink or offering you a mud mask.  There are no saunas or steam baths, or any real facilities of any kind for that matter. Not a roof in sight, not even a restroom.  Only a few privacy barriers indicated a potential spot to change out.    I wasn’t exactly prepared for a full swim, so I took my shoes off and soaked my aching feet a while.  The hot mineral water was quite soothing, really softened up the calluses.

The hike up and down created quite an appetite.  I saw a sign on the road back to the main highway for a pizza bar and geothermal brewery: Ölverk. Good enough for me. The place was a little fancier than I expected, but the food and service were both really delicious.  Got a pizza with dates, bacon, and blue cheese on it, and it’s probably the only pizza with fruit I’d do again.  I passed on the beer: around 2700 ISK for a taster flight of four, 4000 ISK for a draft pour. Makes the ballpark seem cheap. Turns out the geothermal thing was just how they generated their power anyway, which is kinda cool I suppose, but that’s how they generate much of their electricity there. That’s like saying a brewery in Seattle is hydroelectric powered.  It was getting late in the day at this point, but my friend recommended I hit a spot a little further up the road: Kerið Crater. It’s a sinkhole, but an impressive one.  The parking lot backs right up to the crater, and there’s a short hike around and a staircase to the bottom.  At the bottom is a pool of clean, cool groundwater. Like everywhere else in that country, it was created by volcanic activity.  Some kind of sinkhole type process. I took the staircase to the bottom, took a drink of the water (tasted great!), and had a lovely conversation with some folks from Russia.  A chat with some folks from the other side of the world seemed like a good way to transition to the next portion of my trip.  I took a windy route back through the southern portion of Þingvellir National Park, but it was around 10:30pm at that point so I knew I needed to drive the couple hours back to Akranes to make my flight.  The back roads were wide open and peaceful: for kilometers on end I might have been the only person.  There was also some gravel, but some experience living in the Colorado mountains served me well.  I cranked up the tunes and thought wistfully of the summer ahead of me.  Amsterdam, I’m ready.

Final Thoughts

Iceland is a place unto itself.  My only regret is that I didn’t allow myself one more day.  More than that though, oof.  It gets expensive.  Outside of Reykjavik is extremely rural and provincial, and Reykjavik is indeed lovely, but not exactly the most cosmopolitan or bustling city. I would go back, and would recommend it to almost everyone, but unless you plan on doing some hardcore expeditions you can see pretty much everything in three to four days.  For me, it served its purpose: I relaxed at the Blue Lagoon, ate Hákarl, slept off the jetlag, and adjusted to some of the differences of European culture.  Overall, a lovely experience. Oh, and be aware the tap water smells like sulfur.
