cafe latte
cw: college au, phd student suguru, masters student reader, selfship coded. 1.6k words. unedited.
will most likely have following parts.
“Cafe latte, two shots of espresso. Please,” the man orders his drink before you’re able to look up and smile to greet him.
“For here or to go?” You finally look up after pressing the order in, waiting for the last detail.
“Here, please.” He smiles at you, his eyes unmistakingly purple. You pause, lingering on his face a moment longer. “Do you do free refills?”
“For in-house customers, yes.” You shake your head to focus on the order at hand. You feel your cheeks heating up as you try not to think about how handsome the man ordering is.
“Great, I’ll also take a croissant if you have one.” He pulls out his wallet as you tell him the total.
You try not to notice the generous tip he leaves in the jar in front of you as you count his change. Once you hand back the coins, he smiles at you and you grin back. He walks to sit down across the small coffee house at a small table with one seat. It happens to be the seat you always like to sit in when you come here to study. He seems to be doing the same.
As the barista next to you steams the milk for his latte, you make the espresso shots to help out. It’s slower today, so you have time to help out even though you’re assigned to the register today. The toaster oven beeps with the croissant inside, so you carefully take it out and place it on a plate. Your coworker hands you the latte, and you take it and the croissant across the room to the handsome customer.
“Croissant and cafe latte,” you place the plate and cup carefully on the table. “Can I get you anything else?”
“I’m fine, thank you.” He is, for sure.
“You’re welcome,” you smile and walk back behind the counter, trying to cool your face off.
It’s not that you’ve not had your fair share of hot customers before, there’s plenty of fine regulars since you started working here a year ago when you started your masters program. Classes start up again tomorrow for you, but the official first day back is today. You haven’t seen many of the regulars you got used to over the summer, but they may be avoiding this shop since it’s so close to campus. Your eyes linger back to your favorite spot.
This customer is new, you’re certain you’ve never seen him before. You’d have remembered his eyes.
A few students come in, freshman you assume by their bright eyed looks. They order a few treats and coffee to go, keeping you busy for a while. The class change is always hectic, people coming and going. In the chaos, you forget about the man in your favorite seat in the house. It’s not until your shift is almost over that you look up and see he left at some point. You wonder if he ever got his free refill. Perhaps during your break he did.
Walking back to your apartment that evening, you find yourself wondering if you’ll ever see him again. You allow that thought to sit for a moment before shaking it from your head. You have a lot of reading to do tonight before your Modern British Literature course tomorrow.
–
“-----,” the professor calls your name and you look up and raise your hand.
“Here,” you reply just loud enough for her to hear. She smiles at you, and you remember her from your undergrad years. She was a TA then, but has been newly promoted to associate professor.
“Suguru Geto?” She asks next and your eyes scan the room. You’ve never heard this name. The program you’re in is small, so you know everyone in your cohort.
As a hand raises, you catch it out of the corner of your eye.
“Here,” he replies and she moves onto the next student.
A few seats away from you is the customer from yesterday. You look forward as he starts to turn, perhaps feeling your eyes on him. You take a deep breath and look down at the syllabus in front of you. It seems she’s picked a few you know and a few you don’t.
The professor goes over the syllabus and asks you all to have the first section of the first book read by next week. Simple enough. You read it last night already, so you’ll just have to take a few notes to be up to date. You write a reminder in your planner then close it to focus on the rest of what the professor has to say about the class.
She takes up the entire class time, which you’re glad for since you didn’t want to have to linger around before your next shift at the cafe. You make it there in a few minutes after class and clock in and change into an apron. The pink apron is taken, so you settle for the frilly white one that’s your second favorite. The owners of this cafe thrifted most of the items decorating the walls, and the large coffee mugs. The aprons were handmade by one of their grandmothers, you can’t recall which.
As you settle into your shift, you forget about class and the readings you have to do tonight. Luckily, you’re not closing today so you have time for a panini and a drink afterwards. By the time three hours pass, it’s time to clock out. You put in your order then settle into your favorite seat in the cafe. You’re lucky it’s open, as the coffee house has filled up this afternoon with classes in full swing on campus now.
Layla brings you the drink and sandwich, to which you thank her and go to your book. You’d annotated a few pages, but now you need to be prepared for discussion on it next week. Taking a sip from the coffee, you then look down to your bag and dig around for your pencil case. Once you’ve acquired your favorite pen, you start to take notes on your annotations.
“May I sit across from you?” A voice draws you away from the notes and you look around. Every seat but the one across from you is taken.
“If you don’t mind me studying, then sure,” when you look up at who asked, you’re taken back. It’s Suguru from class and yesterday’s daydream on your walk home.
“I don’t mind. I’ll be doing the same.” He smiles and takes the empty seat across from you. Luckily the table is just big enough for him to lay out his notebook and book as well. “Thank you,” he tells you as he settles in.
“You’re welcome. I’m —--,” you tell him, thinking a proper introduction is better than awkward silence.
“You’re in the lit class with me, right?” He asks and you nod. “I’m Suguru.”
“I am. I’m a second year masters student here.” You lay the book down and place the pen as a bookmark. “You’re new, right?”
“I am. The grant I’m working on was transferred here with my mentor. I’m working on my PhD in literature. My last institution didn't teach a British literature course for graduate students, so I was happy to see they are here.” He explains a bit more about his research into children’s literature and pedagogy.
“Wow!” You sit back and smile. “And here I am scared of my thesis next year.”
“Have you chosen a topic?” He asks and you shake your head.
“I have some ideas, but I don’t know how to execute them. I want to talk about the soul and the idea of clones using Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go and Neal Shusterman’s Unwind Dystology but I’m having trouble finding articles that articulate what I’m looking for.” You explain a bit further about what you have found and then let him think.
“It’s an interesting idea.” He grins and places his elbows on the table, his hand on his chin. He leans forward. “I’d love to hear more about it once you get to writing.”
“I just said I don’t know-”
“Just start writing.” He tells you and you raise your eyebrow in amusement.
“Is it that simple?” You laugh.
He laughs and nods. “You can’t work with nothing, but you can work with something.”
“What wise words!” You giggle again and finish off your coffee. “I’m going to grab another drink. Would you like anything?”
“Cafe latte, two shots of espresso. If you don’t mind.” He hands you a few bills and you wave it off.
“I work here, they’ll give it to me for free.” You go to get the drinks and when you return he thanks you as he takes a long sip.
“Thank you for allowing me to sit and chat with you. Beyond my mentor, I’m afraid I haven’t made any friends in the last few days.”
“It’s my pleasure to be your first,” you tell him and it makes his cheeks turn red.
He grins and takes another drink. “I have a class to teach soon, so I hope you don’t mind me preparing for the remainder of our time here.”
“I don’t mind. I should be studying actually.”
“You should be writing,” he corrects and you roll your eyes.
With that, you both settle into your individual work. Once in a while you sneak a glance at him and catch him looking at you as well. It becomes a game of how long you can go between glances. You’re losing, you think.
“May I take your cup to the counter?” He asks as he stands and you nod.
“Thank you, Suguru.” He returns and packs up his bag. “Good luck teaching.”
“I appreciate the wish.” He smiles. “See you round.”
“See ya,” he leaves and you watch him go, before sighing and leaning back into your seat.
You’re in trouble.

Introduction ☆
Hello Tumblr! My name is Morten, I am a 21 year old guy from Denmark. As a twitter refugee, I have no clue what I'm going to post on Tumblr for now, but stick around if you like (人 •͈ᴗ•͈)
I guess I should talk about what kind of guy I am... Well put into simple terms, I'm a guy who adores the wonders of graphic design, which is also my eventual goal of a job. Currently I'm taking my higher exam, so I can attend university next summer. Other than that I'm your average movie n' music enjoyer, but I will talk about that a bit later. I'm also a gamer (insert cool sunglasses emoji here), where some of my favorite games include; Cult of the Lamb, Stanley Parable, Overwatch 2, Portal, Prose & Codes and wordle... If you're interested in more of my gaming addiction, feel free to add me on steam!
Now onto MOVIES (☆▽☆)
I love watching movies (& tv-series, but I'll get back to that in a sec!), so much so I actually have a letterboxd you should check out...*wink*... If you're genuinely curious about what my favourite movies are, check out this list!
Now with tv-series, I struggle using Serialized, I tried but it doesn't seem like a great fit for me. Therefore, let me list some of my favorite tv-shows instead.
Never Have I Ever (Netflix)
Aggretsuko (Netflix / Sanrio)
Watchmen (HBO)
The Simpsons (Disney+ / FOX)
Strappare lungo i bordi (Netflix)
Abott Elementary (Disney+ / Starz)
Hacks (HBO)
Playing next: Music! (*ノ・ω・)ノ♫
Gosh, how do I say this without sounding cringe... Music is my life (oh gosh Morten just stop) but jokes aside, I really love music. Sadly / luckily, I'm one of those users who use Apple Music, so befriend me there if you'd like! I also have Spotify, where I sometimes transfer my playlists too. Now, I'm a really huge k-pop fan, like it's so bad my wallet is burning... So let's go through some of my favorite kpop groups! *btw, if you wanna check out my last.fm, feel free to do so now!*
GFRIEND / VIVIZ (Ult GG)
EXO (Ult BG)
Red Velvet
NewJeans
AESPA
Davichi
Anyway! I think that was all I had to say. Stick around if you like, become mutuals with me if you like and PLEASE give me some tips on how to use Tumblr

How to Get Free Steam Keys in 2025
For PC gamers around the world, few things are more exciting than scoring a new title—especially when it’s completely free. Whether you’re hunting for indie gems or blockbuster releases, free Steam keys offer a legit way to build your game library without spending a dime.
But here’s the problem: not all websites offering free Steam codes are safe, reliable, or trustworthy. Many are filled with spam, fake giveaways, or shady requirements.
Enter ValidCDKeys.com—a rising platform created by gamers, for gamers, offering free, verified Steam CD keys without registration, hidden fees, or shady business.
What Is a Steam Key, and Why Does It Matter?
Let’s start with the basics. A Steam key is a unique 15-digit alphanumeric code that can be activated on the Steam client to download and install a game. Once redeemed, the game becomes permanently tied to your Steam account.
Steam keys replace physical game discs, making it easier to own, store, and launch your favorite games anytime, anywhere. This digital evolution of game distribution is not only more efficient but also environmentally friendly—no plastic cases, no shipping, and instant access.
Meet ValidCDKeys.com: Your Source for Free, Safe Steam Game Codes
Launched by a team of passionate PC gamers, ValidCDKeys.com was built on one core principle: make great games accessible to everyone—for free.
The platform works by collaborating with a network of over 20 game developers, publishers, and digital distributors to provide users with a wide range of verified, legal Steam keys for hundreds of titles.
Unlike many other "free game" sites that require surveys or app downloads, ValidCDKeys keeps things clean. No registration, no pop-ups, and no personal data collection—just free games.
Why Choose ValidCDKeys for Free Steam Keys?
In a sea of scammy giveaways and unreliable links, ValidCDKeys stands out for several key reasons:
🔒 Secure and encrypted — SSL-protected browsing keeps your activity safe.
🎮 Gamer-focused — Built by people who understand what PC gamers want.
🚫 No tricks — No account required, no credit card prompts, and no subscriptions.
🌍 Global access — Available to users worldwide with region details noted.
♻️ Updated daily — A fresh selection of Steam keys is added and verified every single day.
The platform is also supported by anti-fraud systems to ensure that each key remains unique, untampered, and ready to be activated.
How It Works: Claiming Your Free Steam Key in 3 Simple Steps
Getting a free Steam key from ValidCDKeys.com couldn’t be easier. Here's how it works:
1. Browse the Collection
Head over to ValidCDKeys.com and explore the library. The site offers dozens of titles across genres—RPGs, action games, strategies, simulators, and more.
2. Pick a Game

3. Redeem Your Code
Open the Steam app, go to Games > Activate a Product on Steam, paste the key, and you're good to go! Your new game will be added to your account permanently.
That’s all—no downloads, no waiting period, and no nonsense.
Are Free Steam Keys Really Legal?
Yes, they are.
Game developers and publishers often distribute free Steam keys for a number of legitimate reasons:
📣 Promotional campaigns
📹 Influencer or YouTuber collaborations
🛠️ Early access or beta testing
🎁 Community giveaways
These keys are generated directly by developers and authorized distributors. ValidCDKeys obtains its keys through these official channels, ensuring they are not only legal but 100% safe to use.
How ValidCDKeys Sources Its Game Codes
Transparency matters. ValidCDKeys doesn’t pull its codes from questionable sources. Instead, it operates on a model that benefits everyone involved:
Developers get exposure for their games.
Sponsors support the platform in exchange for visibility.
Gamers get free content without ever opening their wallets.
Sometimes, users can even submit unused keys to the platform to share with the community. These are verified before being published.

In 2025, the demand for digital payments, privacy, and borderless finance has made Russian virtual credit cards (VCCs) more popular than ever. Whether you're a freelancer, traveler, gamer, or crypto enthusiast, being able to access a Russian Mastercard or RUB virtual card without needing a bank account is a game changer. This guide explains how to get a Russian virtual credit card instantly online using crypto, and why it's one of the most secure and convenient options available globally.
Why Are Russian Virtual Credit Cards in Demand in 2025?
Russian users and global digital nomads increasingly look for flexible financial tools that do not require traditional banks. According to Statista (2024), over 58% of Russians aged 18–34 use some form of digital-only payment system. The rise in cross-border e-commerce, privacy needs, crypto adoption, and geopolitical restrictions has accelerated the need for bank-free Russian virtual credit cards.
Trending keywords:

Buy Russian Mastercard online
Crypto VCC Russia
Instant virtual card Russia
RUB virtual prepaid card
Top user demands from forums and Google trends:
3D secure Russian VCC for online payments
Buy Russian card anonymously with Bitcoin or USDT
Use virtual card for Steam, Netflix, and Google Ads
No verification or minimum KYC
Fast delivery (under 10 minutes)
What Is a Russian Virtual Credit Card?
A Russian virtual credit card is a digital payment card issued in Russian rubles (RUB), often branded under Mastercard or Visa, and accessible via mobile or web apps. It allows you to make online payments worldwide, even on platforms that require 3D Secure or country-specific billing info. The key advantage? You don’t need a Russian bank account, passport, or local address to get one.
Virtual cards are generated online, funded through cryptocurrency (Bitcoin, USDT, Ethereum), and offer full card details including:
16-digit card number
Expiration date
CVV security code
Benefits of Getting a Russian Virtual Card Without a Bank
No Bank Account or Residency Needed: Unlike traditional Russian banks that require local documents, online virtual card providers allow you to create a VCC with just an email and crypto wallet.
Instant Issuance: Many platforms issue your card within 5–10 minutes after crypto payment confirmation.
Crypto-Based Top-Up: You can load your card with Bitcoin, USDT (TRC20/ERC20), or other stablecoins, ideal for users living in restricted regions or with limited fiat options.
3D Secure Support: Essential for websites like Airbnb, Netflix, Facebook Ads, and online marketplaces.
Multi-Purpose Usage:
Online shopping (Amazon, Wildberries, AliExpress)
App subscriptions (Spotify, YouTube Premium)
Account verifications (PayPal, Steam, Google Play)
Utility payments
Anonymity and Privacy: With limited or no KYC, your personal data is not shared with third-party banks or payment processors.
Global Acceptance: Russian Mastercard VCCs are accepted worldwide and often work better for Russian IPs or local merchants.
How to Get a Russian Virtual Credit Card Instantly Online
Here is a step-by-step guide based on real user behavior and top provider offerings:
Step 1: Choose a Trusted Provider (Like Gpaynow)
Look for platforms that:
Offer instant VCCs in RUB
Accept crypto payments (BTC, USDT)
Require minimal KYC
Provide live support
Are not blocked in your country
Tip: Gpaynow is a reliable provider offering Russian Mastercard and Lira cards, globally accessible, hassle-free, and backed by 3D Secure.
Step 2: Register or Sign In
Create an account using just your email address. Most platforms don’t require full identity verification.
Step 3: Select Your Card Type
Pick a card based on your purpose:
Russian Mastercard RUB card for Russian apps or billing
Lira VCC for Turkish platforms
USD VCC if you plan global shopping
Step 4: Pay with Crypto
Load your wallet and pay with USDT (TRC20 recommended for lower fees) or BTC. Payments are verified in under 5 minutes.
Step 5: Get Card Details Instantly
After payment confirmation, your virtual card details are issued and shown on your dashboard. Copy and save your:
Card number
CVV
Expiry date
You can now start using it online right away.
Real-World Use Cases for Russian VCCs
Steam or Google Account Verification: Russian cards bypass geo-restrictions or card rejection issues.
Crypto Withdrawals to Card: Some exchanges allow you to withdraw to VCCs.
Ad Accounts: Use for Facebook, Google Ads, or TikTok campaigns that require secure payment methods.
Bill Payments and Utilities: Many Russian users use it to pay rent, Wi-Fi, and mobile top-ups.
Travel & Booking: Book flights, hotels, or car rentals using a virtual card when other cards fail.
Is It Safe to Use a Russian Virtual Card?
Yes, if obtained from a secure platform. Ensure the provider supports:
3D Secure authentication
Transaction notifications
Daily spending limits
Encrypted dashboards
Since the card is not tied to your personal identity or bank, it provides higher security against online fraud or data theft.
Common Questions (FAQ)
1. Can I buy a Russian virtual card with Bitcoin?
Yes, most platforms including Gpaynow accept Bitcoin, USDT, or other cryptocurrencies.
2. Is KYC required?
Some platforms offer low-KYC or no-KYC options, especially for smaller amounts (e.g., under $500/month).
3. How fast do I get the card?
You can expect your card within 5–10 minutes after crypto confirmation.
4. What websites does the card work on?
The card works globally and supports platforms like:
Steam
Google Ads
Facebook
Wildberries
Netflix
5. Can I use it outside of Russia?
Yes. It’s virtual and works internationally, though some platforms may require a Russian billing address.
Final Thoughts: Russian VCCs Are the Future of Private Payments
With rising restrictions, sanctions, and demand for privacy, Russian virtual credit cards offer a fast, safe, and borderless solution. Especially for users who rely on crypto, need flexibility, and want to bypass regional blocks, this tool is indispensable in 2025.
No bank account? No problem. Use your crypto wallet, get your card instantly, and enjoy seamless online transactions today.

3000 words on NFTs
Here is my stupidly long post to memorialize what I have learned from 4 hours of law-focused web seminars on NFTs and/or the gaming industry to try to answer the question: What the fuck is an NFT and what is it for?
First of all, I know nothing about cryptography or security, I am approaching this with a 5 year old’s understanding of the tech behind blockchain/NFTs. That said, NFTs are just tokens that are purportedly unique and secure -- i.e., they can function as proof of ownership of ~something~ -- that live on a distributed ledger (or database) called the blockchain. “Non-fungible” just means unique -- bitcoin is fungible because every bitcoin is exactly like every other bitcoin. NFTs are all unique -- even if two NFTs point to the same asset (more on this later), they have different token IDs and are distinguishable. Like all cryptocurrencies, they are held in “wallets” -- which are just accounts for this blockchain.
Note: This post uses nested bullets, which are broken on dashboard/mobile. tumblr is trash. If you are sane, probably skip this. If you want, lots of words behind the cut that are best viewed on my tumblr on PC.
What the seminars told me NFTs are good for
The purported unique/secure part means that it is (next to) impossible for someone to pretend that they own an NFT that you own. For example, a much touted use case for NFTs goes something like this: You buy a pair of Nike shoes. They come with an NFT that proves you own those shoes. You then go to a “metaverse” operator and show them the NFT, so that they know you bought the shoes, and then you can wear your Nike shoes on your avatar in that “metaverse”. You can do this in multiple metaverses because the NFT lives on a distributed ledger outside that metaverse operator’s own database, and no one can “fake” the NFT.
Compare this to how digital ownership is handled today in two illustrative cases:
1. You buy a thing from a platform owner (say, iTunes or Steam or Google Playstore): your purchase is recorded in each platform owner’s own database (ledger), which is centrally managed by that owner. This cannot (easily) travel to any other platform, because it lives only on the platform owner’s, e.g., Apple’s database. Also, only Apple controls that database, and you can’t, for example, sell your ownership of a purchase you made (e.g., song on iTunes) to someone that uses Google Music without Apple’s permission.
2. You buy a thing from a third-party seller; they give you a code that you can turn in to a platform owner (e.g., you buy a game on Amazon, Amazon sends you a 16-digit alphanumeric code, which you then redeem on Playstation Store). In this case, the code itself is not safe or permanent -- once you use it, it is gone, and ownership is transformed into variant 1 above (now your PS Store account has a record saying you own X game). If anyone else has access to the code and submits it to PS Store before you do, PS Store can’t tell whether you’re using it or anyone else is using it. You also can’t buy a code that will work on any store -- you always get a code that works with only one store (Steam, PS Store, EGS, etc.).
So the NFT evangelist’s argument seems to be primarily as follows:
NFTs are a form of proof of ownership that can travel and is free from a platform owner’s control. So the utopian vision is something like:
You can buy an item (e.g., a skin) that can be used in any game
You can buy Nike shoes or a Gucci shirt and wear them in any metaverse
Your ownership is independent of the platform, so even if, e.g., iTunes shuts down, you won’t lose the songs you purchased because you can show the NFT to another service and access those songs
NFTs are secure in a way that central databases are not -- the blockchain, because it is distributed, has no single point of failure. To simplify, imagine Apple’s database as a single phonebook. It shows the name and phone numbers of everyone who has an Apple account. If someone gets to that phonebook and changes your phone number, you can’t stop that--the phonebook itself is the only copy of the ledger. Blockchain is like 100 people each hold 1 page of the phonebook and are constantly calling each other to verify whether any change to the phonebook is legitimate. Because of this, nobody can forge or hack the blockchain phonebook the way they could with Apple’s one phonebook. (This is a gross simplification; let’s accept it for the sake of argument.)
One oft touted argument is that NFTs can come with “smart contracts” that automate payment of a royalty on any resale of an NFT to the original minter (presumably also the original artist for argument’s sake). So especially for artists who are often struggling, but also for people who want to support artists, the idea of an NFT that later somehow skyrockets in value but keeps generating a continuous stream of 1% or 5% to the artist on every resale can be enticing.
NFTs as-is are also often used as a sort of “club membership” -- people who own a Bored Ape or Pudgy Penguin are granted exclusive membership to a club, which... is somehow desirable. BAYC had some event in NYC where recognizable bands and celebrities performed for this exclusive audience. It sounds mostly like an MLM type scheme, but also does make at least MARGINALLY more sense than programmatically generated monkey pictures selling, by themselves, for millions.
Why I still think NFTs are stupid
However, if you’ve followed along so far and have a lot of fucking questions, that’s completely normal, because:
Okay, so NFTs are proof of ownership of ~something~. That ~something~ can be really anything (you could, say, make an NFT that “proves” ownership of a house or a star or a car), but at present is usually a piece of art (whether a jpeg or a music album or an NBA highlight clip or whatever).
But the NFT can be made (minted) by anyone, including someone who has no rights to the underlying art. In this case, ownership of nothing is actually worth nothing and is just 100% a scam that further defrauds artists. Also note that if the minter is not the artist, then the potential royalty on resales to the minter is also further fraud! (The NFT minting process is such that it is probably impossible to actually effectively police this in the near future. Also yes, it’s copyright infringement to do this, but who’s going to enforce and how?)
What rights you, as the NFT owner, even have to the ~something~ are not universally defined, have to be determined on an NFT by NFT basis, and are therefore very nebulous. The NFT is, basically, technological proof that you have X rights to the connected art, but what the X rights are? Can wildly differ by NFT. The artist MAY intend to transfer ownership of the art itself (copyright) but probably not. The buyer MAY think they’re getting ownership of the art itself, but they’re probably not. (Even assuming you’re getting an exclusive license, is that the same as ownership? Would an NFT owner have standing to sue over the underlying art? Like, sure, there’s caselaw out there that’s probably relevant, but do I want to get into it, no.) Laypeople almost never actually understand IP laws in the first place (which is not meant in any derogatory sense -- I also do not understand the cryptography behind why NFTs are secure, I am merely operating on someone else’s explanation that it is -- we are all laypeople about most subjects in this world), so there’s a serious problem that people buying and selling NFTs often actually have no idea what they’re buying or selling in the first place. Figure in the amount of propaganda around the scene, and. Well.
Paying a premium for a secure proof of ownership of a jpeg is, in most rational people's minds, not very useful since the art itself is freely accessible in other ways, including so-called right clicking. So, right-clicking is, you know, piracy and all, but given that the premium -- the difference in valuation of the NFT and the value of accessing the art without that proof -- is fucking bonkers right now, like... I am not here to make any moral arguments against piracy in the context of NFTs, man.
All of the above is exacerbated by the fact that NFTs usually don't include the actual art in the token because putting the whole fucking file in the blockchain is expensive (remember, blockchain requires everyone with a page of the phonebook to be constantly checking with each other, and if the phone number is a million digits long rather than 10 digits, it takes much more work to check -- see also energy use point below) -- so USUALLY the NFT only contains a URL pointing to a file on an external server. Besides the fact that the art is obviously freely accessible on that external server, servers also often disappear, leaving you with an NFT that points to nothing.
Sidebar: No, the Australian man did not “funge the tokens”. (However, I still salute you, sir.) He just made a copy of the art that the tokens point to, which is the same as right-clicking, which falls under the general bucket of “piracy” insofar as you accept that the underlying art is owned by either the original artist or the NFT owner. I also get that “funging the token” is a meme and not always meant seriously, but the point is, I find that internet discourse on NFTs, whether for or against, is frustratingly unclear on what NFTs actually are, which prompted the said web seminars and this post.
Re: the Utopian Purchase Once Use Everywhere model: so I get that there’s a minor technological innovation here that makes it marginally easier to do this, but what currently stands in the way of this is not technology. Technologically, it is already 100% possible for you to resell your iTunes purchases to another iTunes account; Apple just won’t let you because they would rather the other iTunes account owner buy the songs again at full price. Technologically, sure if you only use an alphanumeric code to relay purchases from one platform to another, that’s not secure, but you could also have Playstation’s server link up to Amazon’s server to verify your purchase (and this does sort of work across things like EA Origin, Steam, and UPlay). It’s not really technology that’s standing in the way of this; it’s that major platform owners have very little incentive to recognize and enable third-party purchases because they make a fuckton more money selling directly. NFT technology doesn’t change that. Same goes for game items -- Overwatch, Halo, and CoD could all recognize and implement a shiny gun made of diamond that you can buy with an NFT on some external marketplace, but why would they???? (In the case of games specifically, all of these games run on different engines and would require different assets so it’s also a nontrivial amount of extra work required beyond mere proof of ownership.) I cannot fathom any world where we get anything more than all of them issuing NFTs separately and all you did was change normal purchases tied to a user account on platform servers to NFTs, needlessly burning tons of energy in the process.
This does not mean that there is NO scenario where something like this might happen. For instance, Facebook has just rebranded to Meta or whatever and they seem to be throwing all of their eggs in this metaverse basket, so, despite this not making sense in any traditional media platform way, maybe they’ll think, okay, we want to get ahead in the metaverse and have our metaverse be the most popular one, and the way to do that is to partner with Nike and Chanel and Disney or whatever and help them implement their NFTs in our Facebook Metaverse. But that will require a LOT of negotiating between platforms and content owners and it’s really difficult to imagine it shaking out the way NFT proponents imagine for any platform that also has its own store (Facebook currently doesn’t, is the thing. But I also can’t imagine them not wanting their own store for their metaverse eventually once they have the market share??? I don’t know, maybe I lack imagination).
Okay, so NFTs are cryptographically secure or whatever but, as with any other cryptocurrency, the wallets that contain them are still just as hackable and people are just as social-engineerable, so fraud with NFTs (and crypto generally) has already been documented multiple times. And because there is no central authority, nobody can help you if someone transfers your NFTs to a third party without you knowing -- you're just screwed. In other words, if someone fraudulently makes or sells a purchase on your iTunes account, because Apple controls their own database, they can undo that transaction if they verify it was fraudulent, but nobody can undo a transaction on the blockchain, because distributed ledger.
On the royalty for resales argument (which, again, is theoretically possible but not a necessary feature of NFTs) I’m not entirely convinced that that’s even all that desirable. First sale doctrine holds that the artist was sufficiently compensated when they sold their art the first time and the copy (which the NFT basically is: it acts like the physical CD of an album, your copy that you bought and hold, which nobody else does, even if they have a different copy) being sold has nothing to do with the artist. Personally, I think first sale doctrine overall makes sense--artists being underpaid is generally not because they can't get royalties on further downstream resales of their art. On this point, I also think people should ask themselves whether they want Disney getting another cut on every resale of a DVD or BluRay as well as Struggling Artist 1 with digital painting 1?
On the other hand, I acknowledge that because digital goods never degrade, first sale doctrine could make less sense -- secondhand physical goods involve a tradeoff, while digital ones don’t, so if the artist can never sell more copies of their art once enough copies are out in the world circulating as NFTs, maybe it makes sense to have continuous royalties. On the other other hand, maybe digital goods don’t last forever without degradation -- in 100 years, maybe no devices can actually play mp3 files because the codec is obsolete by then. Maybe it makes more sense to have a set number of transfer restrictions on each NFT (it can only be resold N times) rather than royalties. What makes sense for both corporate IP holders and individuals?
I’m not saying it’s conclusively UNdesirable, just that I don’t think it’s a slam dunk desirable. There’s more nuance here than “artists get paid more, ergo good.”
I will also note that this argument might be different for fine art where the NFT is attached to one piece of unique art as opposed to NFTs for popular art which can act either as a collectible (often speculative) asset (baseball cards, pokemon cards, etc.) or unique copies (releasing an album as an NFT really just seems like you’re selling an NFT the way you would sell a CD). But also, I’ve never understood fine art as an institution anyway.
Yeah, the BAYC sounds stupid. I mean, power to you if you want in on the club? But. Eh.
All of this is still happening primarily on Ethereum, which is still not Proof of Stake despite people yelling to the high heavens that it's happening any day now. As is well known Proof of Work cryptocurrency is currently using as much energy as several combined countries, and I will fucking believe the whole crypto will move to PoS thing when it actually happens.
Also, while there are theoretical legitimate use cases or places where an NFT might be an improvement over existing technology and the whole point of diving into this was to try and learn what those might be, you cannot convince me that the BULK of money in NFTs right now isn't just shameless speculation and money laundering.
As an aside I am in Korea; the seminars I took were specifically law-focused, and non-crypto-industry lawyers were rather skeptical on NFT viability with an eye toward regulations here. Anti-money laundering laws, yes, but also with the use case of game items specifically, Korea has very strong anti-gambling laws so that in-game items being convertible to real money is just flatout illegal in Korea. So anything like Axie, Mir4 or other any other play-to-earn game is illegal RIGHT NOW in Korea. Obviously the game industry in Korea is lobbying to change that, but, like, good on you, Korea. It’s only one good thing in a sea of very bad ones, but. One good thing at least. (The history behind these laws is tragic though, because it involves an arcade gambling game rising to the level of social/political scandal as people ruined themselves playing slot machines...)
Anyway, how regulation will shake out globally will probably be a massive hurdle for NFT industry, and I have very little idea of how it’s going to go except that it will be messy.
This is 3000 words long what is wrong with me
Which is to say four hours of seminars and however many hours of writing this later I remain unconvinced that any of this is worth it in the short term -- in the long term, if NFTs stop burning as much energy as a mid-sized country AND regulations step in to stop the pump and dump bullshit going on, then maybe you could discuss whether they're worth it and whatever advantages they might have.
P.S.: Maybe in five or ten years I look back on this post like, wow, I was dumb. I don’t know. NFTs are just a technology and they could end up being used for things that they’re not at all today, so maybe I missed the whole point. However, SO FAR, I did my goddamn diligence and am not impressed.
#can't believe i voluntarily wrote 3k words and it wasn't even supercorp kissing#musings#rereading this: god i am truly insufferably verbose and cannot write like a normal fucking person

Chapter 2.13 - The Give and Take
Barry and Dennis didn’t cuddle much. Perhaps it was because Dennis was a bit cold in bed, and guarded his sleep close. You couldn’t do a clean surgery if you were tired in the morning, after all. But this morning, Dennis appreciated it. The little spoon wasn’t his usual position, since he was bigger than Barry was, but this morning, he felt enveloped in his husband’s arms somehow. Safe. He snuggled back a bit, thankful it was Saturday and he didn’t really have to get up for anything quite yet, other than a jog--maybe.
The arms around him squeezed him tighter, and maybe it was how strong they were. Maybe it was the rasp of the stubble against his neck, the tongue that flicked his ear. Maybe it was the cock that slid up between his cheeks when the grip around him tightened. Maybe it was the smell, the sounds, the rougher sheets than his usual. Maybe all of it. Dennis realized that he wasn’t in his bed, and it wasn’t Barry that was holding him and pulling him closer, and in a panic, he wormed himself out of the stranger’s hold and nearly fell on the floor beside the bed.
“Hey now, calm down cub, it’s all fine,” the man said behind him. It took Dennis a moment to recognize him--the bouncer from The Hideaway. He vaguely remembered going home with him the night before, after...after everything else that had happened, a massive crush of memory, seemingly too much for a single night. He felt nauseous, and disgusted with himself. He stumbled through the bouncer’s apartment (he didn’t even know his name!) found the toilet, and fell in front of the dirty bowl, almost willing himself to vomit. He wanted to vomit, he wanted something to present to the world that would demonstrate his disgust, but nothing came up, just tears, and then the bouncer was beside him, on the tile, pulling him close, and Dennis sobbed into his chest.
“Fuck, first time, eh? Don’t worry boy, I got you, just let it all out.”
Dennis sobbed, unable to reconcile what had happened to him the night before, what he’d done, with the person he’d thought he was. He didn’t go to leather bars like that. He didn’t wear leather, he didn’t have sex with random men, he didn’t...he didn’t! But he had. He had, and he’d liked it. The disgust was there, but it was one level removed. He wasn’t disgusted at what he had done in the club--he was disgusted that he had enjoyed it all so very, very much. He could smell the sweat and the musk rolling off the bouncer’s chest, and Dennis felt his cock throb, and that was enough to push him away and wipe his eyes. He had to get himself together.
“The first few hangovers are a real bitch. I know, I remember mine. You’ll get used to them, don’t worry.”
“I’ve never had a hangover in my life. I didn’t even drink last night.”
“Not that kind of hangover. A Pigtown Hangover. We get lost in it all, and wake up back home, no idea how we got there. Or in someone else’s bed, still no idea. It happens. It just means you had a real good night.”
“I...you all raped me. I didn’t want to do any of that!”
The bouncer sighed. “Really? You didn’t want all the guys in the bar to line up behind you and pump a load into that hot hole of yours? That doesn’t turn you on?”
Dennis had to hide his cock as it got harder still, and the bouncer laughed. “Dicks don’t lie, bud, not around here.”
“But I didn’t--”
“You disregarded my very clear suggestions that this was not the place for you, and instead you snuck in, violating our rather clear dress code. What did you think was going to happen?” he said, then sighed, “I guess you didn’t know what was going to happen, did you? Well, part of you knew. I could smell how hungry you were at the door.”
Hunger. Dennis poked around a moment, but that hunger he’d felt for days now, it was gone. Not gone, not really, but sated. “I...I need to get home.”
“Sure thing man. You live close?”
He shook his head.
“I don’t have a car, or I’d drive you. Looks like you’ll have to join the march of shame.”
He helped Dennis up to his feet, who turned, saw himself in the mirror, and gasped. He looked different. Really different. Younger, for one thing. Shorter, hairier, a little chubbier. He gave his face a poke, then the rest of him, trying to map his ego onto the body he was seeing.
“I think that was Marshall, did that to you. You were trying to talk to his apprentice, weren’t you?”
Dennis focused, and could remember that smoke, the strange sensation. But it was Kyle who had done it, not Marshall--or the older fellow who had been with Kyle at least, if that’s who he was. “He...said I was going to be a cub with...a hungry hole, looking for a Daddy.”
“Well, you found one, and that hole sure was hungry last night,” the bouncer said, coming up behind him, running a hand down Dennis’s ass, running a finger around his ring. Dennis moaned at the sudden pleasure that welled up in him, and pushed back before getting a hold of himself. “Does the cub need one last fuck before he goes?”
“I can’t, I...my husband doesn’t know where I am, and...”
“No worries man, I get it.”
Dennis looked at himself, at what he was wearing. He still only had the jock, boots and harness on. No phone, no wallet. No keys. “I don’t...have any of my stuff, I must have lost it with my pants at the bar.”
“It’ll show up where you need it. Pigtown loves to take, but it’s not interested in any of that stuff. It gives you plenty too, if you’re brave enough to let it in.” He probed his finger against Dennis’s hole, working in a bit, feeling how eagerly it opened for him, and smiled. “Come on you cute cub, how about one more for the road?”
Dennis knew he should say no, knew he should push him away, knew he should hold onto what little bit of dignity he still had. Instead, he let the bouncer bend him over the counter, lube his cock up with some spit, and slide it deep in his hole, right where it belonged. Getting fucked had never felt like this before, it had never, not once in his life, felt good. But this was wave after wave of pleasure washing over him, and he found himself pushing back, begging for more, the smell of their sweat filling the bathroom and steaming the mirror in front of them before the bouncer finished inside him, reached around, and with just a couple of strokes brought Dennis to orgasm all over the front of the counter.
He kept his cock inside Dennis until it got soft, both of them panting together, and Dennis eventually muttered, “I don’t even know your name.”
“It’s Craig.”
“I’m Dennis.”
“Nice to meet you Dennis, I hope you don’t regret it.”
Surprisingly enough, he didn’t. Craig pulled free of him, helped Dennis out of his leather gear, and they showered together. He offered him breakfast, but Dennis really was starting to worry about Barry, and declined.
“Well, we should at least cover you up a bit. Otherwise, you won’t make it to your car before some other Daddy drags you down a dark alley and has their way with you.”
Somehow, Dennis didn’t doubt that Craig was telling the truth. He also found himself wondering if that might not be so bad after all. Craig gave him some jeans an old flame had left in a drawer that mostly fit--the legs were a bit long and the waist needed a belt, but it worked well enough. Then, he gave him the work shirt he’d had on at the bar the night before. It was soaked with sweat still, and smelled like heaven when he pulled it on.
“I need that back eventually--company property,” Craig said.
“What’s your address?”
“You can find me at the bar--you know where I work,” he said, giving Dennis a wink and a swat on the ass as he pushed him out the door and into the hallway of the apartment building where he lived. “You even have some leather gear now--so you can get in the front door, like a civilized cub.”
They had a bit of a laugh at that, and then Dennis was out and onto the sidewalk, along with a good number of other men in situations similar to his. He exchanged a few knowing nods along the way, and that helped too. That he wasn’t alone. Dennis made it back to his car in good time, and without losing his hole to any sexy Daddy along the way--though more than once he considered it. Just like Craig had said, his keys were resting on the hood of his car, his phone and wallet in the center console. How they had gotten there he didn’t know, but after everything else that had happened, he wasn’t surprised. He drove home, already trying to figure out what he was going to tell Barry to explain...any of this. The fear almost made him turn around, go back, and crawl back into bed with Craig--but he couldn’t do that. But the thought made his guts growl. He thought it was because he’d skipped breakfast for a moment, but he knew what it was now, that hunger. He’d sated it for the night, at least. But how long could he go without now that he’d feasted?
