hi i see that you like gardening
i live in central North Carolina and am looking to kill my lawn and start a pollinator garden! I'm very new to gardening so I'm not sure where to start asking for advice or ideas but input is appreciated
Hello!
So, when one starts Gardening, its absolutely great to go into it with an idea of what you want. Where tending and caring a garden is a lot of work, the planning - those first steps in making things work out for you is critical, so you're not putting in an installation you might not be happy with, or setting yourself up for doing ongoing maintenance or costly repairs later on down the road. So, usually when I'm planning a garden, there's some homework I usually start with first. I'm proceeding under the assumption that this is intended to be a relatively low-tech garden of native species, and so from here on I'll be referring it to Xeriscape, or a garden that does not rely on additional water (once established, key point)
Kill Your Lawn
Its actually harder than it sounds. Grass really likes being grass, and few things grow better in a grassy habitat than grass. So, this is the first, and one of the less fun parts, but if you do it, you need to do it right, otherwise you'll be fighting your lawn grass for years.
Honestly this is the one I think you ought to just hire someone to do for you. Its labor intensive and annoying, and you can pay someone about $250 dollars and they'll come and do it and its a done deal. Buy once, cry once. If that's just not a viable option, read on.
Smother it. Do not use herbicide, because you plan to use native plants, those are often especially sensitive to herbicides like glyphosate. So, instead, kill its access to light and air. You can do this by first soaking the lawn well with water, then laying layers of burlap, cardboard, or a pinned/sandbagged tarp. Soak it real well, enough that a day after watering the ground is still moist and workable with a shovel, then cover it with enough stuff to block out all sunlight. Best to do this in summer. The mix of heat and lack of light will kill the lawn, and microbes in the soil will decompose the grass, jumpstarting your native soil food web.
Cut and Till. I know I know. People don't like tilling, and in the long term its bad when used repeatedly because over time it compacts soil making spots where water can accumulate, BUT using it just once wont do that and will save you a ton of headache. If you find you still have a grass mat, rent a sod cutter too, and use that to cut out that grass once and for all.
MULCH. You want so much mulch. Mulch smothers weeds, keeps moisture in the ground, and over time, helps add carbon to the soil, which is a building block for plants. This works not just as a soil helper, but a pause button. If you can't afford to plant your yard all at once, at least getting it under mulch is a pause button that means you don't have to do lawn care while planning/filling out the yard, even if planning a field of wildgrass. Research
Plants generally need four things in order to thrive: Water, Air, Sun, and the Soil Food Web. Pollinators rely on the plants themselves, but they also need water and a safe hiding place. There's a few things you can do to figure out what kind of habitat you have:
Is your soil one that drains water quickly? Does it retain water? Is it cement-like clay when its dry? Is it mostly sand? Identify its properties at different times of the year and write it down.
Get a sun tracker app and use it to determine how much sun your yard gets. Some of these apps also show you sun position in different seasons, and this matters a lot. While you may get a lot of sun in summer, it might be a deadzone in winter, for example.
Go hiking! Visit some local nature preserves, or a place in the wilderness near you that contains one or more habitats identical to your own. Bring a camera, a note pad, a paper, and something to collect plant samples. Take pictures, notes, and record your observation. If you wanna grow for pollinators, then make note of what the pollinators are going to. Also, record the pollinators you find.
Visit a native plant garden near you. Many botanical gardens can be found all over the place, and often they feature tastefully made native habitats you can look at for design inspiration!
Find Your Guild
There's a saying that nature hates a vacuum.Plants, insects and other wildlife all have synergistic relationships when existing in their ideal habitat. Plants may compete for light, but they share the same soil food web, may communicate with one another in the presence of threats (plants do, in fact, talk) and help fill the vacuum. Lets say you have a habitat with trees but no undergrowth. Well, you're gonna get undergrowth, but it'll be whatever happens to love that habitat and grow there fastest. When you start off with a plant guild, those relationships are built quickly and synergistically, each part of the guild strengthening and supporting the other.
Learn what beneficial pollinators exist near you. Simple enough. You can find this by looking up species at the North Carolina Wildlife Federation https://ncwf.org/wildlife/pollinators/
Look at the kinds of plants these pollinators like, and then examine your plant list from your hikes. Where the two cross, thats a pollinator you can pretty easily attract to your yard!
Start fantastrophizing in your yard. Just spend some time in there, take in your knowledge of plant guilds and insects, and start examining your yard. This part is more art than science, but essentially, this is where you start planning your landscaping. Taller plants should go behind shorter ones viewable from your chosen perspective. Where you have sun hitting walls, that can be climbing space, low parts in the yard could be a potential water feature. Fantasize about the best possible outcome, and then write it, sketch it, record it as best you can.
Once you know your fantasy, start scaling it back to the things you have immediate control over.
Garden
The starting of the xeriscape takes some work. Native drought tolerant plants usually need time for them to grow their roots deep enough to get the year-round water they need, so, for your first year, plan to water the yard yourself. Once established though, you can go hands off, and your guild will tend its own garden. Nature is its own best gardener, and once it puts down roots, it'll take care of itself.
State universities offer master gardener extension programs. They offer gardening advice specific to your climate, and often have contact numbers in order to get gardening advice directly. “Want me to try and translate?” Shepard asked.
Miranda gave her an incredibly skeptical look, which Shepard didn’t blame. She had never had a deft hand at technology, not even when she was at C-Sec and it was explicitly part of her job. Just last week, Shepard had single-handedly nearly enacted a core meltdown on the Normandy just because she tried to turn the heat up in her quarters and install some warm-toned mood lighting. After that, Miranda gave her a stern lecture and a firm ban on touching anything that contained a button, a switch, a breaker, and/or a sensor. Which was just about everything on that fucking ship.
Eventually, Miranda conceded defeat. “From afar,” she said.
Shepard squinted at the console. The cipher still had root in her mind-- something she made a mental note to talk about with Liara next time they diverted to Illium.
“It’s some sort of… user interface, I think,” Shepard said. “Data from different sections of the ship. There’s a button for barracks, a button for the helm. One for something called the distillery.” She didn’t want to think about the implications of that one, so she let it go.
“Do you see something for any sort of laboratory?” Miranda asked.
Shepard only pointed at it, she swore. She was still a good couple of inches away from the screen. But as soon as her finger stopped over top of the button, the platform underneath them heaved. She felt her knees buckle as she steadied her hands out for balance, which did very little in quelling the panic that was rising in her chest.
In a matter of seconds, the platform was flying. Hurdling through the air, Shepard felt the wind whipping in her air, little dots of tears forming in the corners of her eyes. She had no idea how any of this Collector technology worked. Not Omega-4 Relay IFF, not the pods, not the stupid console interfaces that apparently were so sensitive that all she had to do was think about them and they would enact. She got her wits about her, finally, and pulled out her new shotgun.

Sleeping Meme (Repost do not reblog)
Type of bed: At his home, he has a king-sized bed because he likes to move around a lot when sleeping alone, to Minato, there's no better feeling than being able to roll around onto the other side of the bed, despite this, he doesn't really move around too much in bed unless he's feeling extra comfy.
Number of blankets: It depends on the season. In spring he uses two thin blankets, the top one being a little bit thicker. For summer, he uses the central AC he installed upon buying the house. Since it is nice and cool in the house, he usually opts for one thick comforter since his central air is very strong. Fall, he likes to keep his bedroom balcony screen door open all night so he can take in the cool fall breeze (Which he is very comfortable doing since his bedroom is on the fifth floor in his seven-story home, so he doesn't need to worry about stalker fan girls sneaking in, also the fence surrounding his home) so in turn, he uses a very thick comforter with a thinner bottom layer blanket. In Winter he turns his heat up and usually goes for a thin blanket. One that's thin enough to keep him cool, but also still keeps him warm.
Number of pillows: Minato has six pillows, four of them stay along the headboard, while the last one foes under the main pillow under his head to elevate him a bit. Because of his height now, he needs to have his head elevated a little just to sleep comfortably.
Type of clothing: Minato isn't too picky with what he wears to bed, but his choice of sleepwear usually consists of: A dark blue tank top and black loose-fitting pajama pants, a midnight blue t-shirt, and black shorts. Some days, if he's feeling too lazy, he'll just throw on a pair of pajama pants and sleep shirtless.
Does it matter where they sleep?: Kind of but not really. For the most part, if he's tired or comfortable enough, he can fall asleep pretty easily. Although the hotels he stays at do play a big part in that as well. While Minato isn't really concerned about staying at flashy and fancy four-star hotels, he at least wants the hotel to be good quality, with top-tier housekeeping and hospitality.
What do they do when they can't fall asleep?: If there is ever a night that Minato for some reason, cannot sleep, he'll kill some time by either:
Play a video game on his Switch or 3DS XL (He's always torn between a horror game or an RPG)
Post a random tweet on t.witter asking which of his fans across the world are up, or just make a random shower thoughts type of post out of amusement and observe how his fans react.
Look over his collection of haunted and supposedly cursed artifacts and items and take count.
Dig through his horror movie collection and struggle to choose between a slasher flick or a paranormal-themed flick for an hour or two
Have some herbal tea to try and invoke sleep, but ends up munching on cookies, thus failing his attempt to become tired by having sugar
Read a horror book in the dark, under a single reading lamp
Hunt for ghosts in his own home until boredom or sleep hits
If all else fails, he'll lie down in the dark playing soft and sleep-inducing music until he eventually crashes out.
Frequent dreams, and/or nightmares: Minato's dreams stem from very weird and bizarrely random(A good example of this: Minato once dreamt of entering a land of gummy bears and proceeded to eat them, they even encouraged him) All the way to serious or fun. Though he's no stranger to bad nights of his own. Sometimes, he does have nightmares about his parent's deaths, but only during the month it happened ( I can't remember if there was a canon month given, but I'll assume September for now) There have also been a few instances where Minato has had reoccurring nightmares of something for a week due to coming in contact with some very malicious entities that curse his dreams for a limited time.
Deep slumber or naps?: Minato can do both, though it all depends on what he's doing at the moment. If he's still tired, his best chances of a nap would be on the train if it's a ride longer than five hours, on his private plane, or if he's being carpooled/escorted. If Minato is driving though, he always makes sure he's well energized since he doesn't want to risk falling asleep at the wheel. In terms of deep sleep, Minato tends to do that on Sundays since those are well renowned for being a lazy day.
When do they sleep?: When he goes to sleep, depends entirely on his work schedule. Almost every day, Minato works until very late at night and into the early morning, the times he sleeps vary between 4 to 6 am on a work day. But if it's a day off, it's usually either 1 or 2 am.
What could wake them up?: Lots of things, the most common being: His alarm clock, or the one on his phone, the bits of sunlight that poke into his room (Which is why he has blackout curtains in his bedroom), and Takashi who has literally dragged him out of bed a few times on a Sunday whenever he's had the odd career related thing to do, be it a guest appearance on a show, podcast or an interview.
Above all though, Minato would like to be woken up by his significant other over everything else, he's used to the normal ways of waking up, so being woken up gently by his lover is what he would prefer, especially compared to Takashi ripping the blanket off of him.
