As a long time httyd fan who has been heavily involved in the fandom since the first movie and who has spent years working in the animation industry, I’d like to share my thoughts on the new httyd movie. Keep in mind, this is just my personal opinion and it's completely fine if you disagree with me. I just want to say a little something about all this that really bothers me.
The core reason that Dreamworks and Universal made this film is that it’s a quick and easy cash grab for them. Thats it. They don’t care about telling a good story or making a “better” version of the original movie for fans or even having an accurate portrayal of the characters/story. It’s purely about money. They know that fans of the original film will go see this movie, whether it’s good or bad. And those guaranteed ticket sales are all that matter to the studios. And with Universal, it has the added bonus of being a cheap promotional and merchandising opportunity for the new HTTYD land in Orlando that opens around the same time that the film is premiering in theaters.
And to help the studios make even more money out of this, they are using non-unionized VFX companies around the world to make this film, so that they can get cheaper labor and push the artists to do more that would be against American union standards. The same thing has probably happened with the costuming and fabrication for the filming, hence why the costumes look un-weathered and the sets look cheap. They don’t want to pay for the extra time and effort that it would take to make the practical bits of the production look good.
On top of all this, Dreamworks has already announced that they’re shutting down all their in-house animation projects in favor of using AI and outsourcing projects to cheaper international non-union studios.
With all this in mind, I just can’t support this film and I will not be seeing it in theaters. And I hope that others will do the same.
The only way to stop all these horrible “live action” remakes (which are actually just realistically animated remakes) is to not buy tickets to see them. Money is all that matters to these studios, and if they don’t make any money off of it, then they will stop and try something different. Maybe they'll even go back to focusing on original stories!
That’s the power that we hold as audiences. Our wallets help drive the decisions that the executives make. So support unique storytelling and gorgeous cinematography in movies. Support indie films. Support animators as they're fighting for fair pay and better contracts. But don't support a mediocre shot-for-shot remake riding on the coattails of an already successful film.
And I just want to wrap all this up by saying I have absolutely no hate towards anyone that has worked on the new film. Toothless looks incredible and I know the artists and creatives involved in this project did the best they could with what they were given.
But I also know that those same artists have so many more brilliant ideas that they would’ve loved to be given the creative freedom to do. I just wish hollywood would be willing to take a chance and let them do it.
#they could've made a film following the plot of the httyd books or even a different pov of what happened in Berk from a vikings view#those would've been much better options if they really wanted to utilize this IP in a live action or realistic animation format#but they chose the cheap option of literally copying an already successful film and throwing actors in there to say its new and different#this whole thing bugs me so much#i hope you guys will excuse this rant but I hate what hollywood has become and I hate that creatives are forced to make this junk for them#all while fearing for their jobs because of rampant layoffs#please help put an end to hollywood abusing creatives in the way that they are and don't watch this movie#httyd#how to train your dragon#hiccup#toothless#movie#live action#dragon#astrid#stormfly#cosplay#art#artists on tumblr

“i’ll be so lucky to have you” is such a beautiful line. himi knowingly returns to a world that is destined to consume her in the fires she holds dear, all because they’re also the very doors that’ll bring mahito into existence.
and that’s the enduring essence of miyazaki’s works: life, through all its suffering and misery, is still worth living. through the people we love and the memories we cherish, we search for and find our reasons to live.

I understand that I am late, but I am watching Midas Man. It is such a bad film about Brian and such a nice film for Looking At The pretend Beatles and how in love they are. What they must to do IMMEDIATELY is make Beatles films with those four actors. Not films about the Beatles for fuck's sake never that. Just new Beatles films. A terrible sequel to Help! and a version of Lord of the Rings and whatever that weird western thing was. They're so pleasing, I want to look at them, I want them to be locked in a cellar together and think they're going to die. I want to see fake Ringo knitting fake socks. Their Paul smiles at Tiny John and I am alive, their George made me feel feelings about real George! They should have many films please, now, at once. They could come out to coincide with the awful biopic things we're expected to live through, and the boring serious ones could go see those, but you and I could go see something where they rob a bank to fund a small theatre show to save an orphanage on Mars or whatever.
#midas man#the beatles#beatle films#I would abso. hire them for the boring terrible bio pics too#there's no reason they shouldn't do both#imagine how happy they'd be if they got to sing ACTUAL beatle songs#Do you think fake Paul and John would do my apocalyptic bus film for free if I quietly asked and learned how to make films?#I always thought I'd have to animate it#but it would be much easier if they just went and lived on an apocalyptic bus for a year or two and let me film them.

Disney, releasing Wish: "so it's all about legacy--the new generation surpassing the old, overcoming the evils perpetuated by them, relinquishing singular power... and there's an old man in a tower, uh... animal sidekick, i guess..., ah... magic...?
Miyazaki, just out of frame, sledgehammer raised:
#the boy and the heron#not tagging wish 'cause i'm being a little acidic#this isn't to be negative in the slightest--I really respect both films--but it's interesting to see how visceral boy+H gets with its story#what evils have to be rejected and what they represent--and how characters and the world suffer from those evils--as well as how the whole#'rejecting' part goes. in terms of animation powerhouses discussing their legacies - disney and miyazaki both - I find it interesting that#one makes a pretty safe and nostalgic movie about imagination and dreams; the other is a long trudge through the land of the dead.#b+h is a hard watch - and a look at the legacy of a man questioning his whole purpose in the world - after his cultural touchstones#have long passed by. Mahito needs to understand his grief to keep living--but if he drowns in it he'll just continue the cannibalistic and#violent world of his granduncle. how the hell do you make art when the trauma of your entire life has colored it forever? How can anyone?#maybe after a while... it's time to detonate that damn tower and keep living.#this is to say#if you have enough money to make whatever you want#Make It Fucking Count

Been seeing some posts about the new live action How to Train Your Dragon (ugh), and while I agree with a lot of what people have been saying about Toothless looking uncanny and not as good as he looks in the original, there is one thing I've been seeing here and there that isn't quite right:
"He looked better in animation than he does in cgi"
um....y'all...sorry to be the one to break it to you, but cgi IS animation 😅 Toothless was a cgi animated character in the original movie, and he's a cgi animated character in the remake too.
CGI in and of itself is not the issue here. The issue is the execution. The issue is that he looks out of place. I'm not sure if it's the model or lighting or textures or what, but he doesn't look like he belongs in his surroundings. It is very much possible to successfully integrate cgi animated characters with live-action surroundings...they just didn't quite manage that here. THAT'S why it doesn't look as good as the original. Not because "it's cgi" 😅
#but yes i 100% agree about being sick of live action remakes in general#they're nothing but pointless cash grabs that almost always pale in comparison to the original#the original how to train your dragon is already a VERY GOOD movie as-is; it does NOT NEED TO BE REMADE#there's absolutely nothing that live action inherently offers that the animated film doesn't already have#you're not inherently improving on anything by making it live action all you're doing is giving it a different coat of paint#and it's not even better paint#s t o p

the fact that willy almost always never stays a consistent character in any adaptation he's in is a concept so interesting to me...
#catcf#charlie and the chocolate factory#like whenever they make a film or musical or animation based on catcf#he's always the one with a major change#but for some reason theres an essence to his character no matter how many times they try#to change him.#yk?#idk man#willy wonka#wonka 2023#wwatcf#catcf 2005#like the man is the unbridled force of creation#of course they cant pin him to ONE personality#he's so multifaceted

My actual only request and probably unpopular opinion for season 3 is that they tone down the color grading. I think season 1 looked a lot better. Season 2 was way to saturated. Crowley’s skin looked orange.
#unpopular good omens opinion#it feels hypocritical because I use very saturated colors in my art#and I mean it looks good in the show in an isolated frame#but when it’s the whole thing constantly it looks sort of fake.#also makes everything darker which messes slightly with the value scale#I can’t stop thinking about it cause like I feel like I’m one of the only artists#who is not usually a fan of color grading like this#I prefer just like…regular film footage#or edits that are not particularly noticeable#good omens#I love cool colors I think that’s pretty obvious in my work#and I love it in animation#but idk in film#I sort of analyzed it for my friend (shout out to u mumb) and as I did I noticed how the greyscale contrast of a lot of the scenes are#not nearly as pleasing to the eye#saturation has the tendency to darken colors for the most part#so the background and Crowley would be rather dark while Aziraphale would be rather light. the background needed to be a more even#in between value#sometimes it is but sometimes it’s not#like some scenes look pretty great™ with the color grading#but arggggggg idk#obviously this is my subjective opinion#I understand a lot of people liked it#I actually also think this is why I much prefer ginger Crowley over red hair Crowley#I think the red looks fine when applied without the intense color grading but with it it looks#I mean it looks fine I’m complaining about nothing#me when I complain about the things I love 🥺
