i think optimus' and bumblebee's relationship in earthspark could be summarized as "a parental figure who sees their child as an employee/lackey/student". been thinking about this for like a week strap in

because i think that's totally what it is. bumblebee keeps trying to prove himself to optimus, in any way he can. he goes out there, wants action and missions for optimus to notice how hard he's working. i think he "agreed" (he didn't agree, actually, he just does what he's told bc see above) to mentor the terrans specifically to show optimus he can do it, he's smart and capable. he claws his way out to show optimus he's not just one of his autobots

meanwhile optimus, perhaps purposefully, avoids bumblebee and his desire to have a parental figure. it's crucial for him not to get attached because if he does, it opens up a whole load of problems he can't (or couldn't?) get to because there are too many things to worry about at the moment. they're all occupied with human alliances, the decepticons, the quintessons. i think he wants to care, at the end of the day, and he shows signs of caring, but he never goes through with it. because he has other more important duties at hand

and i think bumblebee would agree, too, he's not daft. but at the same time... i just know he craves it, especially seeing the terrans with their many parents supporting them, and himself with... none

I'm rewatching Trollhunters in the background right now, and the disfunctional mother son relationship between Jim and his mom is making me crazy.

Like, he's taking care of the household and his mother for years as a teenager and before probably. She is sometimes giving half hearted comments about him not having to do so much, but very obviously she's not gonna make him stop do all the cooking and cleaning. Y'know. Both because they've been living like this for years, and because it's obviously also very comfortable to have someone do all the house work.

Then Strickler comes into the picture, and if we ignore the whole Troll and changeling side of the story, Barabara gets very offended cause Jim doesn't want her to meet him privately. Again, ignoring the whole magic and trolls stuff, STRICKLER IS JIMS TEACHER. If Jim hadn't figured out that Strickler was a changeling he probably wouldn't have a problem with it, but the fact that he does, no matter the reason, should be enough for Barbara to put a stop to the relationship. Her child is clearly uncomfortable with her seeing/dating that guy, for whatever reason, and even clearly vocalized it. But she doesn't care about, or rather, she tells Jim that she "wouldn't expect something like that" from him. Obviously not, cause she may see him like her child/teenager he is, BUT DOESN'T TREAT HIM LIKE ONE.

And then Jim, unknowingly to Barbara, becomes the Trollhunter, and his behavior changes. He's suddenly doing reckless stuff, sneaking out, getting bruises, landing in detention and even at the police station, barely avoiding a police report. What does she do? Asking him what's going on? If everything's alright at school? If he has any other problems? Maybe trying to lower his workload around the house, which again, he's doing most of that as a teenager and longer probably.

Nah. She doesn't do anything until he lands in the hospital. Except for again, dismissing him rather negatively at the one topic he's openly expressing any negative opinions about (Strickler). And after he lands in the hospital she now starts not asking questions, but demanding answers. Demanding answers from a teenager in a difficult situation who is also now acting much more like a teenager than he ever did before, from her point of view at least. Except she obviously doesn't know how to deal with a teenager, cause she has never had to raise or live with a teenager. She instead lived with a child pretending to be an adult for years, that was partly much more of an adult than she was, who did way to much work even before Jim became the Trollhunter. So she throws punishments at him and grounds him, but does he listen?

No. Cause why should he? Not only is he dealing with things much more important than being grounded, yknow, saving the world, he's trying to protect her from the sheer knowledge of the supernatural and physically protecting her from getting harmed. And again, for the majority of the time since his dad left he pretended to be an adult. He was and is the main adult in the household, dealing with important things she doesn't even know about.

The only one's treating Jim like a teenager are teachers, other children and Blinky and Aaargh sort of when they're not in the middle of Troll business. Strickler, in the first episodes where Jim doesn't know about his true identity, is much more of a parental figure to Jim (also after his redemption later on tbh) than his mother.

In summary: Barbara is treating her son like an adult, almost like a partner, instead of a child/teenager. And when that isn't possible anymore she doesn't know how to properly treat him. She also doesn't really care that her son is uncomfortable with her being around Strickler, or Strickler in general. And it takes Blinky telling her (when Jim is 16) that Jim might be affected by his father leaving when he was five years old.

Jim meanwhile is treating his mother more like a child/teenager instead of the adult and MOTHER that she is. Seeing her as his responsibility. Cooking for her. Cleaning for her. Telling her to rest and take breaks.

They obviously love each other other. And their relationship might not be toxic, but it's very much disfunctional. In a way that is mostly negative for Jim.

the truth is.. the wandering ronin now cannot bear to fathom the thought of leaving behind his beloved to continue his travels, knowing that every view he’ll see will feel incomplete without her. a heart truly is a heavy burden.

What’s crazy about the Jayce-Viktor and Vi-Jinx/Powder dynamic is that, from what we see, despite everything, Vi and Jinx/Powder (Powder will come into play in a moment) are able to live without the other, even in pain. Viktor and Jayce, however, are not.

For example, in the alternate universe where Vi dies, Powder is able to live with a healed family and get the support she needs. She has her brothers, her dad(s) an uncle and Ekko, including a whole bunch of friends. Vi is a sad and cherished memory. She doesn’t lose herself to grief or madness.

In the main timeline even, despite the madness, Jinx is able to find some sort of life (even though it’s toxic) without Vi. Of course, when she finds out Vi is alive, things go south very quickly, but after the events of s2 act 1 they clearly still find places to carve themselves a life out of (even though Vi is uhhh..coping pretty hard) without each other.

In the main timeline, Jinx is able to stop the cycle of hurt by “dying” with Vander. It devastates Vi, of course, but as we see in the end with Caitlyn she’s never gonna stop fighting, never gonna give up on herself and Caitlyn. She’s gonna keep living. Jinx (because I’m a Jinx lives truther) moves on as well, to another land, because she knows Vi is gonna be alright without her. You can have a Jinx (or a Powder) without a Vi and vice versa.

Compare that to the other main duo of Arcane.

If we start the cycle at the explosion, the very idea of losing Viktor devastates Jayce: he uses the very thing Viktor asked him to destroy to bring him back to life. Earlier even, he got his long-time mentor fired for suggesting they destroy the thing that could keep Viktor alive. Singed tells Viktor he is sacrificing love and legacy, and Viktor only thinks of Jayce.

On Viktor’s side, with what we learn later, is that his end goal for humanity didn’t even up even fixing him, because he was lonely without Jayce. He couldn’t stand the solitude even if the world was “perfect” because Jayce wasn’t there with him. It’s why he changed everything, to make sure they meet, to make sure Jayce is able to talk him down and save everything. And only Jayce can do this. And, for Jayce’s part, this fuels him. To him, this is what he’s meant to do, because it’s Viktor.

And in the end, Jayce tells him their life goal doesn’t even matter to him anymore, because they’re both in agreement; they can’t live without each other. Viktor will never be happy if his plans work because Jayce won’t be there. Jayce would never want to give magic to the people because it means potentially losing Viktor. It’s why he leaves with him at the end; they started this together and they must finish it together. He leaves with him in the end because life without the other is not worth it. You cannot have a Jayce without a Viktor or a Viktor without a Jayce.

It’s the two sides of the coin; the pair that cannot live without each other, and the pair that can, even if they don’t want to.

Y’all ever think about how Rex is like. An orphan. Of all his cartoon contemporaries, he’s the only one whose parents are just straight up, explicitly dead.

And like, yeah, you could argue that for some, their relationships with their LIVING parents are like equally traumatising as having dead ones (cough cough phantom cough). Plus Rex has holiday and six.

But like holiday and six are very much paid to take care of him. Like, no matter how good their intentions are, they are still very much people with jobs and their own agendas.

You think Holiday ever had to ignore how wrong it felt to experiment on Rex and take samples and reduce him to a bunch of numbers and test results but she HAS to because that’s her job and she needs to find a cure for Beverly, needs to figure out how he works.

Or Six having to train Rex to be a weapon, probably in the exact way he was trained. The dual motivation of “this is for his own good, to keep him alive” and “I’m literally being paid to manipulate this kid who trusts me with the goal of ensuring the outcome providence wants in battle” and wondering if one can ever cancel out the other.

Like they care. They care about him so much. But Holiday still does her tests and Six still trains him and doesn’t tell him about Noah. Neither of these things is for Rex’s own good. They’re trying, but they work for Providence. They are literally, undeniably complicit in Rex’s abuse. All they can do is control the extent of the abuse. They love him and they’re getting their paychecks from controlling him.

That’s so fucked up. That is so cool.
