A few things:  

You’ll notice on this form that it’s pretty basic, generic—this is gathering information for both writers and artists! Once I have this information, I’ll export it to an excel spreadsheet and from there, anyone who signed up as a writer will receive an email by no later than 6 JANUARY 2025 

In that email, I’ll ask for a basic breakdown of the fic that you’re writing, including a brief summary, pairing, rating and 3 key points you’ll want to touch on during that fic.  

Once you sign up, you are free to start on this fic—however that may be, with an outline or just outright writing it.  

Artists, on 13 JANUARY 2025 you’ll receive a link to a sign-up sheet with the information I’ve collected from the writers, there will be NO names included with this information, so you’ll be picking based on the summary, pairing, rating and key points.    

Once picking has closed, you’ll receive an email with you and your partner included, this will be a brief introduction email giving you a way to contact your partner. From there it is up to you to make contact with the person you’re working with. If you haven’t heard from your partner in 10 days, please contact me and I’ll reach out to them for you.  

There will be a couple of check ins on 15 FEBRUARY 2025 and 10 MARCH 2025 these are just to gauge where you are and if you’re needing an extension! Be truthful and don’t let this bog you down, I’m here for you!  

Once we reach the end of the writing/art period, you’ll receive another email with posting dates! Depending on how many people sign up, we may spread this over the span of a few weeks! You’ll pick a day from the ones listed and in agreement with your partner, you’ll post your works! As long as it’s during your timezone of the day you chose, that’s all that matters!  

There’s an AO3 collection for this! But feel free to also post and share on tumblr! Comments and reblogs will be doled out for everyone!  

You’ll notice on the signup sheet that there’s an option for Pinch Hitter (Artist)/Pinch Hitter (Writer), please only select that if you are comfortable pitching in if an Artist or Writer drops out and leaves someone without a partner! This means you will most likely write more than one fic or create multiple pieces!  

A few more details:  

Writers: Your fic must be at the minimum 5k but you can always write more!  

Artists: There must be at least 2 accompanying pieces of art for the fic you’ve chosen! This can include things like banners, scene breaks, traditional art, digital art, manips, mood boards, etc!

This event is 18+, and as such, you must have your age in your bio somewhere, whether it be an exact one or an age range.  

We are all adults here and we’re here to have fun in our little fandom. If something happens and you need mediation, please reach out to me either by email, tumblr DM or discord.  

Do not under any circumstance knowingly engage with content you do not like; this includes purposefully picking a fic idea you do not like specifically to spread hate about the creator. If you are found doing this, you will be kicked from the mini bang. This also extends to bullying in public spaces i.e discord or tumblr.  

Beta reading is not required for this event, but feel free to have someone read over it if you’d like! Your artist (if they have time), a friend you usually ask to beta read your work. Unless there’s a need, I don’t think there’ll be any beta reader signups for this one, but if anyone would like to be put on a list of people to reach out to if a writer needs someone to look their fic over, then let me know!  

Have fun! If at any point in time you feel like you’re running out of time/you’re not going to finish by the deadline, then reach out to me and we’ll set up an extension! This isn’t a college essay; there’s no penalty for posting past the due date.  

I’d rather extend this for half the year than ever make someone feel like they’re being rushed to complete something for a hobby!

ok i am info-dumping everything bc this took a while to make but it's sooo helpful and i havent had the chance to rant about it yet:

first basics:

how to create a columm with dropdowns: [(you can just search it up and they might explain it better, but i might as well :) ] you need to put your dropdown list options separately. then select the column, go to data, then data validation, go to the settings tab, select to allow "list" and then select the options that you made previously. now your drop down is complete

how to colour code: select the column, go to conditional formatting in the home tab, and start making rules. you can select particular cells for values. i mostly use the "only format cells that contain" bc its the simplest. can do whatever you want now: highlight, bolden, background filling (my favvv)

now the actual excel sheet: you need 3 different sheets: resources, problem areas, and calendar

resources;

is a compilation of all the resources you have available to you or want to use, segregated based on subject.

make sure to include a column for the source/link to find it easily. have a column for status, which will be a dropdown column. then have another column for value/description, which is just extra notes on what the resource is, what you intend to use it for. just makes navigation easier

problem areas:

where you rank all your subjects based on importance, with 1 being the one you need to work on the most and the last being the one you need to work on the least.

1 column for reflection/issues, which is just vague descriptions of the issues like time management, memory, lack of notes, etc.

next column is "actions," where you add actionable items for every single issue, can be more than one.

for pure whimsy, i created another column for "type of task," separating into "practice" and "preparation" since thats usually how i study (learn the topic and practice, and since i have various levels of comfort, this works but you can segregate however. this can also be dropdown and colour coded for funsies).

i also have another column for keeping track of which tasks have been added to the calendar sheet (details given below), just a simple dropdown for "added" and "not added" (again i colourcoded that column bc i love formatting way too much)

the third and most important sheet (especially for time restrictions) is "calendar"

this is not a day by day tasks list/calendar, but a week by week one since its hard to plan day by day and stick to it. imo, better to plan week by week to give yourself some wiggle room.

the columns are week number (dates of the week), subject (that the overarching tasks belong to), over-arching tasks (direct implementation of the problem areas), type of task (prep, practice, assistance [like from teachers or smth. i had that one bc i need feedback a lot]), detailed task breakdown (into multiple mini-tasks if needed), dates to do in the week (can plan this out. it works for practice stuff for me bc i often do repeptitive practice throughout the week for languages and stuff), status (in progress, done for the day, behind schedule, completed), notes (for whatever).

i colour coded by status and type of task columns bc its just prettier.

also, not really that helpful but helps in motivation is to count the number of tasks that are in certain statuses. so you add this data next to the separate list you had created for data validation by inputting this formula into the formula box: =COUNTIF(G:G,J2). the G:G is the column that you are counting the number of times the value in J2 is present. in this case, J2 contains "in progress" and G:G is my status column.

Considering that Sound Forge Pro has been completely re-written for Mac and is less expensive than its Windows counterpart, Sound Forge Pro 10, it may come as no surprise there are some differences. I was hoping to be able to assign custom keyboard shortcuts to menu commands, but as yet this is not possible. Importing video is not yet supported, and batch editing is also not possible, yet. The later is something I'd love to see Sony introduce soon. Being able to batch edit multiple files would surely be welcomed by many Mac-based musicians and audio editors. I also missed the 'Repeat' command, which is very handy to repeat the last process via a shortcut key.

They start as rivals who pass taunting letters to one another and gradually fall in love with each other through their writing. There’s some really beautiful and interesting locations, and I love the longing and emotion in the letter sequences. I think using a science fiction setting for a love story is super cool; especially with time travel, there’s a sense of predestination not found in other genres. I also like the idea of each author writing one of the two leads, so the style is slightly different between them. 

2. The City We Became (Great Cities #1) by N. K. Jemisin (Full Review Here)

Jemisin is a fantastic author and created my favorite series ever (The Broken Earth), so I was stoked to read book one of a new series by her. The concept here is that cities become sentient beings over time given enough people and cultural influence. New York City is about to be born into a human avatar, but something goes wrong. An eldritch foe known simply as The Enemy seeks to sabotage the nascent city and almost succeeds. Proto-avatars of the city’s boroughs have to find their inner power and band together to rescue him and save the city. 

I really dig the ensemble cast, especially Manny (Manhattan), Bronca (The Bronx), and New York City himself. The book is also a great middle finger to Lovecraft, as the cosmic horror element is steeped in structural racism and oppression, with the Eldritch Aesthetic being a creepy pale white. Super excited for the next book. 

3. Artificial Condition (The Murderbot Diaries #2) by Martha Wells (Full Review Here) 

I’ve already said plenty about the Murderbot books on my 10/10 list. I really like this one in particular because it introduces ART, one of the best supporting characters in the series. It’s super interesting to see how Murderbot interacts with a non-human person (or... spaceship. But ART is also a person for sure) similar to itself and I really like the banter and friendship between the two. Like the rest of the novellas, it’s short, but it packs in a lot of story and heart. 

4. Rogue Protocol (The Murderbot Diaries #3) by Martha Wells (Full Review Here) 

My other 9/10 selection for this series! There is a heavy focus on Murderbot’s past and how far it’s come ever since it freed itself from the company’s mental slavery. This probably has the strongest character development in the series outside of Network Effect, with a genuinely sad and sobering ending. 

5. Finch (Ambergris #3) by Jeff VanderMeer (Full Review Here) 

I think this book is where I really “got” the Ambergris series; it’s a pseudo-trilogy with a lot of postmodern elements, but this one is the most straightforward. Finch is a fascinating mix of noir, dystopia, and cosmic horror. I even called this “nontraditional cyberpunk”; there’s elements of a surveillance state, underground resistance/revolution, artificial implants/bodily enhancements-- but all related to fungi and eldritch horror. 

Anyway, this book stars Finch, a detective working in the city of Ambergris, who is tasked with solving an impossible double-murder case. In his investigations, he soon stumbles upon a web of conspiracy related to the downfall and takeover of the city by the gray caps, the humanoid mushrooms who enslave and oppress the human population. It’s just as weird as it sounds, but if you made it to book three, you'll be plenty familiar with how bizarre the series is. Technically, this book is a standalone, but I recommend reading the other two first as they are integral to understanding the plot. 

6. The Last Sun (The Tarot Sequence #1) by K. D. Edwards (Full Review Here)

This is a really impressive debut novel with an interesting world concept and great characters. The idea is that Atlantis was a real thing and got destroyed. The surviving inhabitants decided to build a new city by magically stealing a bunch of buildings throughout the world and transporting them to Nantucket. The result is a cool patchwork urban fantasy setting. There’s a huge tarot motif, hence the series name. It’s also gay! 

I fell in love with the excellent character banter, especially between Rune and his soul-bonded bodyguard Brand. While I had some criticisms on the plot structure and a reliance on same-y action scenes, everything else was so good I gave Edwards the benefit of the doubt. And it really paid off in the sequel, which improves on basically everything. 

7. The Princess Bride by William Goldman (Full Review Here) 

I mean, the movie’s a beloved classic. If you haven’t seen it... go do so? It’s a great adventure story with lots of memorable characters, lines, and moments. Honestly I’m more surprised I hadn’t read the book before, and I’m glad I did. It often felt like an extended cut of the movie, with a few key differences in the frame story and some locations. While I think I like the film just a little more, I appreciate the novel for giving me a broader perspective on the story and characters. 

8. A Choir of Lies (A Conspiracy of Truths #2) by Alexandra Rowland (Full Review Here) 

A Choir of Lies is a standalone sequel to the book A Conspiracy of Truths and can be read on its own if desired. It stars Ylfing, a fan-favorite character in the previous book. He’s processing grief and depression in the wake of his mentor (the last book’s protag) suddenly abandoning him. A (sort of--it’s complicated) professional storyteller called a Chant, Ylfing tries to make it in the Netherlands-inspired fantasy city Heyrland, and writes a diary about his experiences. However, another Chant has found his manuscript and writes scathing commentary on his decisions in the footnotes. 

I had a difficult time getting into this one, as Ylfing is both relatable and infuriating, and a depressed protagonist can be hard to get behind. However, it's well worth sticking through, as the sheer catharsis of Ylfing realizing his horrible mistakes and doing everything he can to fix them is... well, pretty inspiring. Multiple characters own up to their failures, often at great personal cost, for the wellbeing of others. I think it’s a great message, especially reading it in 2020 when the future feels hopeless. A Choir of Lies also has two of the things I liked most about A Conspiracy of Truths-- lots of meta commentary on storytelling, and surprisingly interesting economics. 

9. The Harbors of the Sun (The Books of the Raksura #5) by Martha Wells (Full Review Here)

I thought this was a nice finale to the series. It has some satisfying thematic bookends regarding the Fell and Moon’s character development. It’s also probably the most “epic” fantasy of the series, with super high stakes and a broad cast of perspective characters. I have to wonder if there are plans for further books or a different series in this universe, since the setting has a lot of depth and potential. Either way, I really enjoyed it! 

10. A Killing Frost (October Daye #14) by Seanan McGuire (Full Review Here)

Another year, another October Daye book! Obviously I like this series if I’m fourteen books in and still reading it. A Killing Frost has some slow-ish pacing, but ramps up a lot in the second half of the story. It’s the conclusion to my favorite storyline in the series -- the redemption arc of Simon Torquill. He’s a really interesting morally gray character, and I think serves as the poster child on how the series plays with the idea of heroes and villains. Also, this book casually drops probably one of the craziest twists in the series at the end, and I am super interested to see the fallout of that. 

11. The Edge of Worlds (The Books of the Raksura #4) by Martha Wells (Full Review Here)

This is basically part one of Harbors of the Sun and involves the main cast going on a long journey to an ancient ruin. The first half of the book is pretty slow and probably could have been pared down -- lots of travel sequences. However the second half is super tense and action packed. I found the ancient ruin itself really interesting and creepy, and the book sets up a lot of things that pay off in The Harbors of the Sun.

We’re approaching the end of this video game console generation, with both Sony and Microsoft gearing up to release their next-generation consoles – the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X respectively – so those looking for the peak of performance might want to hold off until next Christmas.

Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo have all diverged into their own niches in the past few years and each console has its pros and cons. But for our money, the Xbox One X is the best video games console thanks to its raw power and Xbox Game Pass subscription service.

1. Xbox One X: Best overall

If you’re looking for raw power, the Xbox One X is the clear choice. Stack this alongside a suite of entertainment apps and a 4K Blu-Ray player and the Xbox One X is the ultimate multimedia machine.

The problem Microsoft has faced throughout this console generation has been the games - which is a big deal for a games console. Sadly, this is still Microsoft’s Achilles’ heel. But, while they still don’t have big hitters on the same level as Sony or Nintendo, their recent spree of studio acquisitions and the fantastic Xbox Game Pass subscription means that you won’t be short of excellent games to play.

Sadly, the Xbox One X still has a fairly clunky user interface. Updates have improved the situation since we last reviewed the console, but it’s still not where it needs to be. There’s also the cost to consider as the most powerful console in the world comes with the highest price too.

2. Nintendo Switch: Best hybrid

Presumably taking inspiration from that Hannah Montana song, the Nintendo Switch offers the best of both worlds - it’s both a home console and a handheld thanks to an innovative hybrid design. When connected to the dock, the Nintendo Switch behaves just like any other home console but pull it out and it instantly switches (we see what they did there) into a handheld device.

Nintendo’s first party output has always been stellar and the Switch carries on that grand tradition with critically acclaimed hits like Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart 8. Support from third parties is still lacking though, so you won’t be able to play popular titles like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare or Apex Legends on the Nintendo Switch. Not that you’d want to thanks to Nintendo’s lacklustre online support.

The Nintendo Switch is also the least powerful console on the market. This means third-party games like The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt and FIFA 20 will be graphically inferior to other console versions - you just have to decide if portability is worth the graphical downgrade. We certainly think so.

3. Xbox One S: Best value

In many ways the Xbox One S shares the same pros and cons as its bigger brother, the Xbox One X. Both offer fantastic multimedia options, the exceptional value of Xbox Game Pass and a built-in 4K Blu Ray Player. At the same time, Microsoft’s Xbox has a weaker lineup of exclusive games when compared to Sony’s PS4 and Nintendo’s Switch. You won’t be short of games to play, but you’ll miss out on some heavy hitters. The UI is still clunkier than we’d like too.

Where the Xbox One S differentiates itself is in power and cost, forgoing the former to offer huge savings on the latter. If you’re looking for value for money, you’ll be hard beat to find better than the Xbox One S. It’s almost worth buying for the 4K Blu-ray player alone.

If you’re looking for a cheap console to tide you over until the next generation of games consoles arrive next year, the Xbox One S is a clear winner.

4. PS4 Pro: Best exclusive games

Spider-Man, The Last of Us, Death Stranding, Bloodborne, Gran Turismo Sport. Sony’s PS4 Pro is all about the games. They’ve forgone multimedia options to focus on cramming as many exceptional exclusive games as they can onto one console. If all you’re looking for is the best games, then look no further.

There is also the PSVR to consider - Sony’s proprietary VR headset. The PS4 is the only games console to support VR and the PSVR even has a good number of exclusive VR titles like Astro Bot: Rescue Mission. Add that to VR classics like Superhot VR and Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes and you’ve got a fantastic VR machine at a reasonable entry price.

Sony’s claims of the PS4 Pro being a "4K console" do come with a lot of small print though. Due to the power gap between it and the Xbox One X, the PS4 Pro uses a lot of clever tricks and upscaling to reach the mythical “4K” resolution on many of its games. It also lacks the 4K Blu-ray player of the Xbox One X, meaning it loses out in the battle for multimedia supremacy.

But at the end of the day, the PS4 Pro is a video game console and in that regard, Sony has knocked it out of the park thanks to their phenomenal first-party titles.

5. Nintendo Switch Lite: Best handheld

The days of the dedicated handheld seem to be numbered, but Nintendo are still putting up a strong defense with the Nintendo Switch Lite. This lighter revision of the Nintendo Switch drops the docking system and detachable joy-cons, simplifying the design down to a more conventional handheld system. As a result, it’s more comfortable to use than its larger cousin. With that said, it’s still a little larger than we’d like and it can become uncomfortable during extended play sessions.

The Nintendo Switch Lite also shares its library of games with the regular Nintendo Switch, so you’ll be able to play hits like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Smash Bros Ultimate and Pokemon Sword & Shield. Add this to third-party goliaths like Fortnite, Rocket League, and Minecraft and the Switch Lite has one of the best game lineups in handheld history.

The lack of detachable joy-cons does mean that some games can’t be played on the Nintendo Switch Lite - this list includes party games like 1-2 Switch, Super Mario Party etc. You probably weren’t looking to play an eight-player party game huddled around a single Switch Lite, but it's worth bearing in mind when weighing up your purchase options.
