Chapter 3: Unclear Wish

When you came to you heard whispering.

"She's still passed out," one of the feminine voices sounded concerned, "even after having been bathed, dried and clothed. What should we do now?" She sounded close to tears.

"Calm down. It won't be wise to panic." The other advised gently.

You recognized those voices.

"If she doesn't meet the Young Master soon. He'll punish us worse for sure!" The tone of the woman's harsh whispering grew higher in pitch.

"I know that." The second one huffed.

You groaned, blinking and opening your eyes. Coming back to face with Inko and Mitsuki hovering over you. Your eyes widened as your heart rate skyrocketed out of fright as you squealed, resulting in both women giving their own cries in turn as they backed away slowly.

The three of you panted and gasped as you slowly sat upright. Having a staring contest.

You felt bad. Sounded like these kind women took care of you and you scared them. That's wouldn't do. Your mother would nag you about southern hospitality and kindness til kingdom come with her new yorker accent as she works; she worked as a waitress. Secretly proud that customers would come in during her late-night shift just to talk to your mom, her gift at making anybody and everybody feeling welcome and made them laugh or smile.

That thought alone made you sad. You'd never see your mom, dad or annoying big brother ever again?

Inko and Mitsuki must have noticed. Thier mother instincts immediately kicking in and instantly going into Mom mode.

"Hey, are you okay, hun?" Mitsuki asked first, scooting hesitantly and offering a small smile.

"Are you hurt? Did we miss anything?" Inko asks gently, her hands intertwined and pressed against her chest.

You didn't notice that you had started crying until you felt the burning hot, stinging, salty tears falling down your cheeks and landing onto your hands, which were clenching hard into the blanket. You tried to blink them back, but more kept coming. You didn't know how long you were gone for, but you already missed home. "I-" You raised your head, meeting their pairs of emerald and crimson gems as their hearts went out to you. "I want to go home." You spoke in a soft and broken whisper. "But- I don't even know why I'm here..." You sniffed, wiping your face with the back of your bandaged hand. Oh. You winched slightly, thinking, Damn, why's it always my dominate hand that always gets banged up?

Inko and Mitsuki shared a glance. No doubt thinking: the poor dear.

The women were torn. They wanted to offer you comfort, but they had a job to finish. It made things more awkward and complicated. They didn't want to get fired. Not from this high paying job.

You quickly swallowed down your sadness and self-pity for a later date as you sniffed and offered a wobbly smile despite your eyes still being glossy with unshed tears. "You said something about the Young Master?" You noticed a tissue box, grabbed one and blew your nose, then another for your eyes. "He's the birdman with four arms and a plague doctors mask, isn't he?" You asked, pointing at your own face for emphasis.

Both women nodded.

"Master Overhaul, yes." Mitsuki agreed, smiling fondly. "He's an overbearing and strict Master; he isn't completely heartless as he seems."

"Yes," Inko spoke, her voice filled with cheer. "It's because of him that we can put food on the table for our sons. He asks for a lot, an overachiever and hardworking man himself, but he pays well!"

You raise a brow as you threw away your used tissues. Trying to keep your mouth shut and rude comments to yourself. They didn't look like the type of ladies who lied, that much was certain. You and this Overhaul had a rocky start. Closing your eyes and sigh as you crossed your arms over your chest, reopening them to stare back at the two, who offered you bright smiles. "I'll take your word for it, then." Your smile widened, seeing theirs grow brighter.

The screen door behind them opens with a hard thud.

Inko and Mitsuki freeze, peaking over their shoulders and came face to face with another masked birdman.

Unlike Overhaul's mask only covering half of his face, this man's full birdlike plague mask gave you more of a steampunk vibe. The mask was black with gold trim and had circular glasses covering his eyes, he wore a white raincoat with a gold trim and red inside his hood; his black wings were furrowed behind his back as his gaze went from the women to you.

"Master Chronostasis." Inko and Mitsuki immediately turned around and bowed.

Chronostasis? You blinked. What's with all of these weird birdmen having weird ass titles? You thought to yourself, shifting to your knees and giving a bow of respect, following their example. Just to be safe. You knew that much at least. Thank you, anime! You secretly prayed, inwardly cheering, knowing that if you said that outloud, they'd think you were even more of a weirdo.

"Is the human full cleaned, purified and dressed?" Chronostasis asked, his tone calm, but cold.

Purified? What the fuck? Okay, where the hell were you feudal Japan? God, you hoped not. I saw all what dramatic bs Kagome and Inuyasha had to go through to get their happy ending. Ugh, when I said I wanted a demon romance I meant like Kakuriyo or Black Bird, but not like this! You mentally face palmed yourself. Did some twisted and bored god or time traveler bring you here for shits and giggles?! Yes, you wanted a boyfriend. But you weren't that desperate! Come on! Your eyes widened, oh no! Now you remember what you said before that shadow entity pushed you through that black mist! You fucked up!

You came home from work, placed your house keys inside the fishbowl beside the front door, closed it and locked it. Kicking off your shoes, hanging up your purse and coat before making your way towards your bedroom, traveling in the dark without any lights on. "I just want to go to bed." You mutter to yourself, blinking as you rubbed your eyes. You were exhausted, your body hurt, your feet hurt. You just wanted to go to bed. Slipping on your favorite oversized t-shirt and pajama pants you scrolled through your phone as you sat down on your bed.

Your mom was asking you if you had found a boyfriend yet. Nope. You were too busy with your factory job, 12 hours shifts, working 5 days a week and two the next, then repeating. You talked to a few co-workers, but nobody you were really close to. Choosing to go straight into the workforce after high school, which your parents understood.

Glancing up from your phone. You glanced around your room, your favorite games, anime, figures, manga and plushies you'd bought with your well-earned money or gifts throughout the years always brough a smile to your face.

But the big question was. Did you want one? Of course you did. Someone to talk to, hold you close, smile at you, love you, make you laugh and tease you, knowing full well you'd tease them back. It sounded nice.

The world spun round and round, people met, fell in love, got married and had kids. Some relationships go the distance while others didn't. You bit your lower lip. Your parents were never married, but they loved each other, they didn't need some silly paper to prove their love. They had you and your older brother. Hell, even your brother had a girlfriend and a handful of kids.

Did you want a boyfriend? Yes.

Were you ready to jump into it? No.

Skimming through your anime song playlist and clicking, "Dearest." It was your favorite. You sighed and leaned back until your back fell flat onto the bed. Laying your phone onto your chest, humming along and slowly closing your eyes. "It would be nice to have a love like that." You mutter to yourself. "A strong demon boyfriend who's fiercely loyal."

You were half asleep, half awake, close to the edge of the realm of dreams, rolling over onto your side and laying your head into the crook of your arm and your grip loosened on your phone.

Completely unaware of the black and purple mist with bright amber orbs spying on you in the corner of your room. A deep voice whisper in the darkness, a sweet caress against your tired mind. "What form of demon?"

"A crow." You hummed, voice small and laced with drowsiness. "Would be nice."

The living embodiment of shadows and darkness felt his lips curl into a smirk. "Oh? Interesting little human." He chuckled, raspy, low and deep. "I know the perfect one for you."

Your eyes snapped open, completely awake now. "What?" Your eyes travel around the room. You didn't have roommate! "Who's there?" You scoot to the edge of the bed, a chill crawling down your spine, goosebumps prickled along your skin and spread. "Hello?" You try to keep your voice calm and steady, your voice betraying you as it cracked.

"Nobody of importance, my dear." The darkness replied, appearing behind you. "Forgive me for disturbing your peace and slumber, however, I have a job to do I'm afraid. You understand, yes?" He opened a warp gate near your feet while you were distracted.

You turn around, eyes widened only to be met with bright yellow eyes. Okay, if anybody asked you thought the boogieman looked like your bets on this guy! "Who-"

He cut you off. "Forgive the inconvenience and apologies in advance." The moving shadow or purple black mist reached his hands out and pushed you hard.

Your stomach dropped as your heart leaped into your throat. Huh? You were falling and it wasn't onto your floor! You screamed as you fell.

You blinked, coming back to the present. Hearing someone call for your attention. You tilted your head up and jumped when you noticed Chronostasis hovered over you, staring down at you.

"Get up, human." Chronostasis asked again, leaning down, wrapping his large hand around your forearm and yanking you onto your feet. "We've wasted enough time keeping the Young Master waiting." Moving forward as you stumble behind him.

"Ow!" You yelp, glaring up at the taller man. "You could have asked me more nicely, steampunk reject."

"What?" He paused, peaking over his shoulder at you and shook himself, dragging you along. "Come on, we don't have time for this. The Young Master is already in a foul mood." He says walking past Inko and Mitsuki, glancing at them as they bowled in respect again. "You are dismissed for tonight."

"Thank you Master Chronostasis." Inko and Mitsuki watch you two leave, hoping that you will be okay.

Your glare falls into a frown. You glance behind you, offering them a small reassuring smile and waving. Silently giving your thanks. Hopefully, this isn't the last time you saw them.
