I will NEVER get over Naruto marrying into the slavery clan then just never ever addressing the slavery going on unacknowledged in the background. Insane.
He really said "we should all be friends and imprisoning people (biiju) is bad! Unless..."

ok so like i know the reason is just. sexism but one thing that really irks me about how the post-timeskip naruto manga handled which characters became medic nin bc it makes absolutely no sense to me
sakura's decision to train under tsunade makes sense, and i love that she got a super strength power up, so no notes there, but the other teams.... yeesh
so first off, team ten. we're told that ino decided to follow sakura into mednin land to keep being rivals with her... despite that at no point factoring into their rivalry at all beforehand. ino never showed any interest in that, nor was the yamanaka clan ever mentioned to have anything to do with healing as far as i can remember. it's like going to art school to stay with your bestie when your goal is to become a dentist. why are you there. find other ways to spend time together. it also kinda goes against her family's whole thing as. the guys who do the torture stuff. and it's barely ever relevant anyway
for team ten, i think the team medic should've been shikamaru, and i think this not just bc i think it makes more sense skill-wise (something about the way the nara clan's various shadow jutsu work just screams "you need good chakra control for this" to me), but also bc i think it would make asuma's death a thousand times more painful. bc shikamaru is a slacker. he's not learning medical ninjutsu bc he wants to, he's learning it bc someone on the team has to in order to stick together. they're all chuunin now; one of them has to be a medic. them's the rules. but he doesn't really care that much, even when he is trying to learn, and he's so used to being smart enough to not have to pay attention in lessons anyway that he's not prepared for classes that require his full focus. and then asuma dies and shikamaru is doomed to spend the rest of his fucking life wondering if he could've saved him by paying just a little more attention to those medical ninjutsu lessons (he could not have (but he'll never know for sure))
team eight makes some sense, since giving the girl who struggles with fighting the healing job isn't exactly out of nowhere, but i do feel it was the lazy choice. kiba already had a sister involved in the medical business, even if she deals more with animals, so he could've started learning from her and found that he liked it. plus kiba's goal is to be hokage, and the current hokage is a mednin, so it's not like it wouldn't support his goal. or shino could do it; would add another layer to his character. hinata works fine but. it's just not a very interesting development imo
but what really gets me is team gai. good freaking grief. out of every single team, team gai was the one with the most obvious choice. bc there was only one choice. lee can't do any kind of ninjutsu, and tenten's only real backstory is that her chakra control isn't good enough for her to be a medic nin. so it had to be neji. canon establishes that every team has to have a medic; this is a policy tsunade got passed even before she became hokage, so no way in hell is she going back on it now.
moreover, neji becoming a medical ninja - especially if hiashi encouraged it - would show some development for the hyuuga clan maybe starting to suck a bit less. bc as a medic, neji would be bound by oath to stay alive for as long as possible. imagine a world in which hizashi came back and hiashi was able to tell his brother that not only was their family starting to change, but his son had chosen a path that would prevent him from ever following in his father's footsteps. it would be the first step (of many) to show that the hyuuga clan was freeing itself from its own bullshit.
also it would've made sakura catching the zetsu pretending to be neji a thousand times funnier. like that's her coworker. they've shared shifts at the hospital together. she's seen neji drink vodka straight from a bottle and then crash on her couch after they got out of a twelve-hour surgery on the fucking dumbass chuunin who managed to step on his own boobytrap. she knows him.

neji's death was so . underwhelming.
watching it now in my 20s, it was
a. brushed over so soon
b. not given the attention and weight it should have been ???
c. UNCALLED FOR - hinata was shielding naruto where she could have easily moved him to a safer spot.
and what sucks is that he did nothing to move the plot forward. like yeah naruto then shared kurama's chakra with everyone, but that was something he was already going to do. or clapping back at obito's "you cant save all of your friends/ comrades" - he was going to do that either way.
and in that process you took away one of the very smart (and forgotten) chara's from the universe (fuck u kishimoto for a bunch of things).
byakugan to be the only known antithesis to the sharingan was not even given half as attention as the latter (THE WHOLE SHOW REVOLVES AROUND THE SHARINGAN AND THE INFINITE TSUKUYOMI PLAN). neji and the byakugan could have genuinely come in and changed the entire plot but anywho.
i am just bitter over leaving neji because there was so much potential and just love for that character. the first one to become a jonin. literally being called a genius (like shikamaru got the attention and arc he deserved). but neji did not. the plot kept him bound as a tool for the hyuuga, made to give his life for the main branch until the very end (fuck the internal shift idc)

When the pale flower grows thorns🌸🥀🩸
Tumblr media
A SasuHina AU where Hinata later on joins Orochimaru’s group. Everyone still treats Hinata as fragile and docile and her family mistreats her more the older she gets. Sasuke convinces Orochimaru of a vague plan to acquire another member that has rare abilities like him, never telling him it’s someone he personally knew or that she’s from one of the leaf village’s prominent families.
Rather than have her talents wasted and not allowed the proper time and space to grow, Sasuke secretly converses with Hinata while she’s out on a mission in an attempt to have her join him. (‼️⚠️Yapping below⚠️‼️)
She does end up taking his offer later on and leaves her family in disarray because she leaves Neji with family secrets about the family seal and leaves him to be the family heir.
I did have a bit sketched of Itachi making a joke about the two when they were kids and thus leading to them being engaged/betrothed by their mothers decisions but left it out because it was too much to fit in here. I also had a portion where Hinata painfully removes Neji’s curse mark and him fearing her for a moment and seeing her potential in that small moment before being left to pick up the pieces of their family.
They knew/met each other as children in this since they are both part of important clans in the village and their parents maintained connections with them. Hinata was usually too busy to be around/play with Sasuke and Itachi since her father and family used most of their time to train her, resulting in Sasuke mainly watching her train and her even sparring with Itachi at times (and losing, much to her father’s dismay).
Their moms have them be verbally betrothed as a small joke amongst the older members in their families, but Hinata’s father was not happy with it (since he views her unworthy until she can start acting and moving like a proper ninja of the clan) but didn’t care for it and lets them pretend about it. Sasuke’s family just thinks it’s cute and pay it no mind but occasionally feel sorry for Hinata seeing how she’s worked to the bone to become the clan heir. They do have certain expectations for Sasuke as well but view the Hyuuga’s methods as overkill in some areas. Also Itachi is the eldest so Sasuke doesn’t rly understand what the clan heirs have to put up with most of the time as he’s given more freedoms.
ANYWAYSSS
Hinata basically has had enough of the mistreatment and being underestimated and never being taken seriously so she’d rather turn to them so that she doesn’t have anything holding her back from improving herself and no longer needing to seek constant approval from anybody. Yknow, something like, she never gets to do anything she wants and constantly feels suffocated from having no control over anything she can/can’t do. Her family is so controlling that even if she finds ways in which she can get better she can’t use them because the clan is stubborn in the ways they want her to portray herself and act as a ninja.
I did add goofy bits of Orochimaru commenting on their hair. He cuts Hinata’s to be layered to give her a more mature look, and he hates how Sasuke never changes his lmao.
I kinda feel like making a art of Itachi being so big brother coded towards these two that when he sees Sasuke he’s surprised (bc duh he’s with the bad guys now and he was such a kind hearted baby) but upon seeing Hinata he is proud to see her take something for herself and be able to pave her own way. Idk lmao. I had fun drawing this and like the way I used some of the brushes.
Btw I plan to not have these two interact with each other with romantic intentions in mind but have those feelings sort of progress naturally amongst each other. She also does still have her crush on Naruto in this but realizes it’s not rly gonna go anywhere so she decides it’s best to forget about him and move on, especially with the fact that her lifestyle will become different.

Naruto Modern AU/Hollywood pt.10 : The Hyuuga Family and the Downfall of Neji
Tumblr media
The Hyuuga family estate sits among the many "noble" clans/families. They are just a long-time established family who made a shit ton of money with certain industries (like the Senju and Uchiha did at Konoha's foundation.) In this case, the Hyuugas' source of fortune is complicated to pinpoint since it goes decades back before the creation of the country of fire, but they own a real estate empire. Many imposing structures and important buildings are under their ownership, securing generational wealth for centuries to come. This clan values “high-status” and high-paying careers like lawyers, doctors, engineers, surgeons, etc.
Like Fugaku Uchiha, Hiashi made a name for himself. He is a renowned criminal defense attorney and was elected the leader of his clan for his dominant personality, many successful business ventures, and his gigantic wealth compared to his relatives.
The Hyuugas have the strictest values and rules. There is a fixation on blood purity because they believe it's where their strength and immense wealth come from. Unfortunately, when you mix it with the feeling of superiority, it is why xenophobia is so common. They consider being part of this family a closed practice, so no outsiders, especially for marriage (they are lowkey into inbreeding).
The most popular family unit resides under Hiashi, with his 2 daughters Hinata and Hanabi, along with his twin brother Hizashi and nephew Neji. They all grew up in the limelight and are like celebrities because the patriarch made up a “rivalry” against the Uchihas (in popularity). Competition, for the general public interest, but both families are good friends behind closed doors.
Tumblr media
Neji's father was always known as the softer version of his twin brother; he was indeed more lenient and kind-hearted, especially with Neji. compared to Hiashi, it's night and day. Neji grew up comfortable as the only son of a real estate agent, compared to the strict, suffocating rules Hinata lives under.
Overnight, Hiashi was murdered without the possibility of properly investigating what happened. Neji was devastated as it was made clear to him that it was an inside job, and his father paid the price for his “disobedience”. With no time to let his son mourn, Hiashi took the opportunity to take the lead and revamp the clan system. CREATING THE SECOND BRANCH and officially branding the forehead of all that belongs to it. It is ironic, since it should apply to all second-born, but forced Neji to be branded under this title. Unfairly, Hiashi justified it by saying that he qualified for it because he lost his father. It was a lie, since he couldn't wait to kick Neji out of the inheritance priority seat (as a firstborn son) to place his daughter Hinata instead and secure the clan's future with an arranged marriage with other powerful families. Neji is not concerned by the loss of inheritance (because it's pocket change, honestly), but the complete disregard for his father's demise and how Hiashi could establish his dictatorship over their family for his ego.
It was extremely frustrating for Neji as he was gradually cut off from the family, and Hinata remained egregiously passive behind her father’s iron fist. Hanabi couldn’t intervene as she was underage at the time.
On top of wanting to propel his daughter forward at the cost of their family dynamic and everyone else, Hiashi severed the loving link between Hinata and Neji because he isolated her so she can focus on the goal of marrying someone of value to the height of our prestigious "superior" family and maintaining their image/status.
Finally breaking free from the system of his clan (mentally at first), Neji was able to finally express himself authentically. He had nothing to lose, and it’s what his father would’ve wanted for his life. Over time, he finally departed from the imposed old money aesthetics to step into his own identity. Many were shocked by it, the public was used to "clean cut suit wearing" "rich nepotism older brother" Neji.
It was not a deliberate act of rebellion (let me do outrageous things to trigger my uncle) but more (let me find myself and succeed). Neji couldn’t care less about what his uncle could think of him, which was far removed from his child self, where he was a law-abiding Hyuuga.
Tumblr media
The main issue was that Neji started to run his mouth, exposing the depth of the traditions and customs of the Hyuuga clan. Publicly discussing the curse mark on his forehead and why many Hyuuga have it as well. It's not just some edgy tattoo but something sinister. Contrary to his peers, he didn’t cover his mark, breaking vital clan rules.
He was constantly in the spotlight of gossip news after he changed his style. A venture as a producer/record label owner led him into successful avenues. To all's surprise, he co-owns a very successful company (BNJ Entertainment) along with lifestyle social media influencer Ino Yamanaka. It is hilarious because when they were spotted together on various occasions, a lot of people thought they were dating. They are the best business partners and close (but no, they are not dating). They barely look like they get along, but it's far from the truth.
Tumblr media
They produced a popular trio that has been sitting at the top of the charts since their debut. He recruited Fuu, Sumire, and Namida to form the group FRAGRANCE, an electro pop masterpiece.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gradually, Neji became more open about his relationship with Kiba Inuzuka (member of the Red Leaves of Konoha).
Tumblr media
Suddenly, his behaviour changed. Neji started to appear more and more unhinged. Going from questionable fashion choices, getting into fights, posting pictures/videos online under the influence & etc. While his business/company boomed and no financial struggles were in sight, his mental and behavioral state was rapidly declining. Many blamed his father's death, but no apparent major event seemed to have triggered this change of behaviour.
Tumblr media
Along with increasing cussing, he ran his mouth to the end of the earth about everything and anything, revealing the inner workings of his life as branch clan members and airing his uncle’s dirty laundry (on the way to becoming male Azealia Banks).
Tumblr media
(it's Kidomaru btw...)
Without warning, Neji was declared dead by drug overdose under weird circumstances. His family barely mourned him (Hinata included). The theories about his death left many perplexed. Some painted him as a plain drug addict and a man who lost his way because of his father's death. Others (like Tenten, Lee, and Hanabi) were not buying the mainstream explanation of his passing. The conspiracy theorists go as far as saying it was a planned murder orchestrated by Hiashi himself to get Neji out of the way for "tainting" the image of their clan.
As a legacy, Ino inherited the company and signed Hanabi and her group to it.
Tumblr media
During the entire saga, Hinata has been passive and never publicly addressed anything about her cousin, even if he expressed getting close to her after trying so many times. Hiashi firmly intervened to prevent a good relationship between the two. What saddened Neji was the lack of action from her cousin's part. She really cut him off and occupied herself with being the "perfect old money wife." (to Shino Aburame, another noble clan heir.)
The brainwashing worked. She doesn’t understand or believe why such an oppressive structure like their branch system could breed rebellion and opposite views since she sits on the “good side” of it.

It’s been years since I’ve watched/read Naruto, but that series despite its ups and downs will always be a classic to me.
That being said I can’t help but always sob, “MY SHAYLA” every time I think of the potential we could’ve explored in sooo many characters. Or even the dynamics we could’ve explored. Don’t even get me started on plot points or world building.
For example I LOVE Team 8, they are adorable little weirdos with incredibly complimentary skillsets and a deep care for each other. I wish we could’ve gotten joint team 10 and 8 scenes since Kurenai and Asuma were literally together. Also why weren’t team 8 involved in the whole Hidan and Kakuzu situation?? They’re all so ride or die for Kurenai. Even if they couldn’t have I feel like the impact this had on their team was never addressed.
Also the girls from the Konoha 11 barely interact and with how male dominated their world is there’s no way those girls don’t put aside their differences and have a standing support group to vent about them.
Hinata?? I’m in tears again. Her default setting as love interest never went away, it makes me so sad! The internal politics of the Hyuuga clan were so interesting and I wish we could’ve seen how she chose to confront it. Also someone like Hinata who doesn’t like violence or fighting would’ve been the perfect candidate to introduce Hyuuga technique in medicine or even the Anbu? The possibilities!
In general the found family dynamic of the Konoha 11 is so weak. They barely interact and I think that’s why it’s so hard to believe some of their relationships. If we had regular joint training or a single space dedicated to Genin where they could practice and hangout then those organic moments would be so much easier to build or reference.
It’s been a while so my memory is hazy and I may have gotten some details wrong. There’s so much potential that I would love to see explored and this is why we have fanfiction! If anyone has any recs for fics that fill the void please share!

a second top five fucked up Naruto things?
ooo a 6-10, if you will. Here's the top 5.
More supremely fucked up things in Naruto:
The whole Hyuuga thing is terrible, awful, wretched. The vast majority of the clan are enslaved to the main branch. On top of that, they can be made to experience extreme pain whenever a main branch member wills it. Everyone finds out about it and nothing happens.
ROOT, as a whole, was once sanctioned by the powers that be. No one made any real moves to stop it once Hiruzen vaguely decided it shouldn't be a thing anymore. Having children kidnapped, branded, and then made to carry out the most heinous of missions is...terrible, at the least.
Everything about Jiraiya, frankly. We are introduced to him as a huge and powerful pervert (so what are the people he pervs on supposed to do?), he steals money from Naruto after failing to provide him with any sort of love and support despite apparently being his godfather, then he goes on to...perv over women and, uh, kind of contain the nine-tails for a few years. Then we're supposed to feel terrible, just terrible, about his death.
The whole Gaara thing in Suna is pretty fucked up. He was sealed before he was even born, and the seal sucked. He was blamed for the seal sucking, he was viewed as a total monster instead of a conduit of a chakra demon doing its thing, then he got a lobotomy from Naruto. His ending is a little too tidy, and I fear that things will continue to suck.
Kind of revisiting, but...Everything to do with the Uchiha massacre is horrendous. These people are driven to the edges of the village because the rest of the villagers fear the power that none of them can harness to take over the Kyuubi. They deal with years of being shunned. They decide that this doesn't sit right. An extremely young boy, Itachi, finds this out, and his cousin who also knows this information ends up dying in extremely suspicious circumstances. The indoctrinated teen decides to go to the village, and the village tells him what to do. I covered this in the other post, but the lead-up deserves a separate breakdown here.

The Hyuuga branding is something that happens to branch kids when they turn 3? okay yeah that makes sense I guess. like 3-5 I'm assuming that's when your chakra systems start to develop, so that's probably around the earliest you can get the byakugan. like #notalldojutsu and all, but we know that the youngest a sharingan was unlocked was like. 4. Maybe they'd have like a yearly sealing ceremony or something? I'd buy that. make it more of a clan holiday that you could tie it's own ceremony to or something, that reads.

have you ever thought about how the hyuga system makes no sense. if the purpose of the branch family is to "protect" the byakugan then how come main family members (eg hinata) are sent out on missions without a branch member on their team?? and even if a branch member is there they could very well both be killed and their bodies stolen. so why are main family members even allowed to be active shinobi doesn't that defeat the whole purpose. i feel like kishi was just making anything up
yeah it's somewhat... nonsensical. if you think about it too much. hey i'm great at thinking about thing too much! let's think about it too much
so we need to start with a lil real world history again - like with many other aspects of naruto, this isn't something kishimoto made up on his own. in naruto, the hyuuga clan has a main family (宗家 souke) and a branch family (分家 bunke). this is a real thing, mostly i think seen in feudal japan.
some quick irl terminology (some of these words have other meanings also; i'm only talking about the relevant definitions here):
宗家 (souke) - kanji: "main point/origin" + "house/family"; the "head of family" or "originator"
本家 (honke) - kanji: "true" + "house/family"; the "head house (family)"; pretty much a synonym for souke as far as i can tell
分家 (bunke) - kanji: "part/segment" + "house/family"; meaning: branch family/cadet family
庶家 (shoke) - kanji: "commoner/bastard" + "house/family"; meaning: branch family/cadet family (the meaning in english is the same, as is the relationship with the souke, but bunke and shoke are not entirely synonymous - bunke usually share the same family name as the souke, while shoke often either don't or can't and have separate surnames)
i need to be transparent here - while this has been an area of interest of mine for a while now, the reality is that there's a lot i still don't know and/or understand about this, so i'm not going to be able to do the historical deep dive that i badly badly want to. i will only be giving the information that i'm relatively certain of, and i may not be able to answer all follow up questions (i will try, but if i don't know and can't figure it out, i'll just say so).
more below the cut (i'll be honest tho it's mostly just a needlessly long way of saying "yeah it's bad writing lol". there's some interesting and some funny stuff there too so check it out if you want but if you just want the final conclusion it's. just that it's not a very well-written part of the story. alas)
a bunke is established when a member of a family separates from that family and creates his own (yes, it is almost always a man; we'll come back to that). the family he separated from becomes the "main" family, the honke. in order to "branch off" (分家する - the act of creating a branch/cadet family), permission from the head of the honke is required. as mentioned earlier, bunke typically kept the same surname as their original family while shoke did not.
branch families might have their own branches as well - for example, the kanamaru clan (金丸氏 kanamaru-shi) was a branch of the takeda clan (武田氏 takeda-shi). the takeda clan was founded by takeda yoshikiyo, born minamoto no yoshikiyo, who was the third (or possibly second) son of minamoto no yoshimitsu, who was the third son of minamoto no yoriyoshi, who was the eldest son of minamoto no yorinobu, who founded the kawachi genji, which was a family line of the seiwa genji, which was a branch family of the minamoto clan, which was the clan of everybody in the imperial family who doesn't get to be in line to be emperor.
so basically:
emperor seiwa -> prince sadazumi (6th son) -> minamoto no tsunemoto (1st son) -> minamoto no mitsunaka (1st son) -> minamoto no yorinobu (3rd son) -> minamoto no yoriyoshi (1st son) -> minamoto no yoshimitsu (3rd son) -> takeda/minamoto no yoshikiyo (3rd or maybe 2nd son) -> takeda kiyomitsu (1st son) -> takeda nobuyoshi (2nd son) -> takeda nobumitsu (5th son) -> takeda nobumasa (1st son) -> takeda nobutoki (1st(?) son) -> takeda tokitsuna (3rd(?) son) -> takeda nobumune (1st son) -> takeda nobutake (1st son) -> takeda nobunari (1st son) -> takeda nobuharu (1st son) -> takeda nobumitsu (1st son) -> takeda nobushige (1st son) -> takeda/kanamaru mitsushige - tada! kanamaru clan! only took about 600 years! some of these men may have even had mothers. perhaps those mothers even had names. we may never know
get it? good
the history of the relationship between main and branch families is basically "some branches were super duper loyal to their main families, some would rebel or try to gain independence if conflict arose, and some just up and did a revolt" (for an example of the latter - the hosokawa clan was a cadet branch of the ashikaga clan who got into a smack fight with shougun ashikaga yoshitane and gave him the boot and replaced him with ashikaga yoshizumi (who i think was biologically his cousin but somewhere along the line the guy who i think was biologically uncle to both of them adopted his own brother who was yoshitane's father so i guess that makes him yoshitane's granddad now???? i don't know man nobles are weird) and that lasted like 15 years until some other guy got involved and made them put yoshitane back)
OK BACK TO NARUTO (thank fuck)
you may have noticed that all of this is unnecessarily complicated and sometimes barely even makes sense. this isn't unique to japan; most nobility i've heard anything about sounds like it exists to give someone a headache. so take real world Nobility Nonsense and add magic shinobi shit and now you've got Ninja Nobility Nonsense
here's the thing. the concept of "x group is inherently better than y class bc x class has [trait]" is a made-up concept that never holds up irl. you see this in almost any form of bigotry - either someone has something that's bad and that makes them inferior, or someone doesn't have something that's good and that makes them inferior. sometimes both. but ultimately it can't usually hold up to scrutiny bc people are actually more complicated than that. but in a story like naruto.... it's basically actually real.
this is the issue i have with kekkei genkai - cool as they are, they're not so much parts of a culture as they are biological traits that usually have culture tied into them. and those traits aren't usually able to be used as well if relocated to someone without the biological tie to the clan - kakashi and ao both cover their respective solo magic eyeballs bc they don't work quite right for them. sasuke and madara run around with both eyes taken from someone else with no problems - hell, it makes them stronger.
however. kekkei genkai are kinda sick as hell so usually i find it pretty easy to suspend my disbelief (or uh. discomfort i guess) bc WHOA THAT GUY JUST RIPPED OUT HIS RIBCAGE AND THREW IT AT SOMEONE THAT'S SO FUCKING HARDCORE
naruto shippuden and naruto classic, when viewed as a single two-part story, tend to suffer from the unfortunate continuity problems they inflict on one another. mostly, shippuden struggles a lot to not fuck up (or completely forget about) plot points and character traits established in classic, but classic also suffers from shippuden's fuckups bc it makes it harder to get invested in things and people you know the author is just going to abandon entirely. it's hard to go along with the tsunade arc's idea of "tsunade will change things if she becomes hokage" when you already know that there's a sequel series where nothing has structurally really changed all that much.
the hyuuga clan gets hit with this hard. pretty much every hyuuga character does. the only hyuuga characters the original storyline actually follows through on are hiashi and hizashi, which would've been great if it hadn't been bulldozed into irrelevance less than ten volumes later when neji is killed off for shock value which was thematically symbolic of kishimoto killing off any pretense that he was going to do anything interesting with the hyuuga clan.
so... no, it doesn't make sense. a lot of people have tried to handwave this as "it's normal for systems of oppression to not hold up to scrutiny" and while i agree with that in theory, i honestly don't think that was kishimoto's intent. hiashi's personality actively conflicts with that, neji and hizashi are the only members of the branch family we ever even meet and hizashi is never able to really challenge the status quo like hiashi is (tho likely hiashi is mostly able to do that because of hizashi's death; no clue how things would have turned out if he'd lived but even then hiashi is shown to have actively tried to prevent his brother's death so fuck if i know), hanabi has no actual connection to anyone but her father and barely that, and hinata's role in the story is so divorced from the hyuuga clan subplot i'm not actually sure she's aware of almost any of what's happening there. i'm not sure she even knows who most of those people are.
basically:
you: why is the hyuuga clan like that
