Hi Everyone!! Here are some more next gens for my Blossom Love AU. Dominic's (The earth pony with the dog tag cutie mark) parents are Calensk and Octavia and Avery's (The earth pony with the computer cutie mark) parents are Pidge and Chihiro. Dominic is super sweet and kind but doesn't like to show it every often as he was trained not to show too much emotion when he was serving in the military. He's also quite the gentleman and loves to help others no matter what. Dominic is also very protective of his friends and family and will do anything to make sure they stay safe. Dominic was born in his father's home country of Arstotzka but sadly after Calensk's first wife had died after she had gotten sick not too shortly after Dominic was born, Calensk knew it wasn't safe for him and his son to stay in Arstotzka, so they moved to Ponyville to start a new life. Later on, Calensk had met and fallen in love with Octavia and just before he proposed to her after dating for 2 years, Calensk had asked Octavia if it was okay that she was going to become an instant stepmother and after already being told by Calensk that he has a son before they started dating, Octavia said she was completely fine with becoming an instant mother and treats Dominic as if he's her own biological son. Dominic was very happy with this decision since now he has a mother figure in his life and he felt kinda like an outcast just because he didn't have a mother beforehand. Calensk has even given his first wife's engagement ring to his son when he was a kid so Dominic can always have something to remember his biological mother by. Dominic later on joined the military and was on duty for 10 years before retiring to live with his family in Ponyville. Avery is super intelligent and loves to build and repair computers and other types of technology hence why he got his cutie mark. He's also super kind and is also quite the gentleman. Avery loves to read any chance he gets and loves to learn more about the future state of technology. This painting is when Dominic returned to Ponyville after retiring from the military and when he first met Avery, he started developing a secret crush on Avery but doesn't want him to know about it as he doesn't want to ruin their potential friendship. But what Dominic doesn't know is that Avery has developed feelings for Dominic too but doesn't want to tell Dominic for the exact same reason as well. I don’t know how to respond to Rep. Shri Thanedar's (D-MI) announcement: the man is filing several articles of impeachment against Donald Trump. Who is this guy? This move isn’t shocking, as Democrats were bound to do it at some point because derangement syndrome still runs high, though Elon Musk has become the new target of the Left.

Still, it’s telling that no one is rallying around this no-name Democrat. It shows that the party remains a rudderless vessel with no leader or message. There is no alternative agenda—it’s all raging against Trump. This push is red-meat material for Democrats—so why is Shri alone? Second, this guy is a train wreck.

About 170 dogs and monkeys were rescued in 2010 from an abandoned pharmaceutical testing lab owned by Shri Thanedar, a Michigan Democratic gubernatorial candidate currently leading in the polls.  Thanedar had to shutter the New Jersey testing facility, AniClin Preclinical Services, after its parent company, Azopharma, which he owned, went bankrupt in April 2010.  Local animal rights activists learned in June of that year that 118 beagles were still stuck inside the facility. The lab’s workers had been jumping the lab’s fences to provide food and water for the dogs, according to a USA Today report.  Two animal welfare groups teamed up to find homes for the beagles and were finally able to take them from the shuttered lab on July 4 to shelters, where they would be matched with adoptive families. A video report conducted by the Times Herald-Record, based in Middletown, New York, showed the dogs arriving in a van from the lab to a staging area where volunteers groomed and attended to the forlorn animals.

Former Michigan Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Shri Thanedar has reached an agreement with plaintiffs to avoid trial in a business fraud lawsuit alleging he inflated the value of a company he sold in 2016.  U.S. District Judge Gershwin Drain dismissed the case Friday, citing a notice from Thanedar and Avomeen Holdings LLC that they had reached an agreement to resolve the matter out of court.  The trial had been set to start Tuesday in Detroit, where Thanedar recently moved as he contemplates another political run.  Avomeen had claimed economic damages of approximately $7 million to $8 million in the sale, which netted Thanedar roughly $20 million. Thanedar disputed any wrongdoing and filed a counter claim seeking damages of at least $2.5 million, according to court records. 

On paper, the congressman is America personified: worked through college, came up through poverty, was at the helm of a supposedly successful business, and is now serving on the Hill. Yet, it’s a mixed bag. In a deep blue bastion, like Detroit, where his congressional district resides, it’s not the GOP who are your enemies, it’s your own party. Maybe he’s impeaching Trump to curry favor with his base, but that also feeds into another anti-Shri point, which is that many think his public service career is a vanity stunt dotted by “malleable” stances on policy (via HuffPo): 

Thanedar’s fiercest critics see his congressional career as a vanity project built on self-obsession and malleable political beliefs. Many also see it as the fullest expression of a life spent pursuing the American Dream.  […]  Detroit leaders who spoke to HuffPost for this piece say they weren’t thrilled by Thanedar’s win, though they were willing to give him a shot. But Thanedar’s first year in office has only compounded their concerns: The freshman representative is facing allegations of creating a toxic work environment with chronic turnover and of dedicating an exorbitant amount of his congressional budget to advertising — including billboards in the Detroit area that feature his blown-up face and the number of the office — that feel more like campaign self-promotion than official communication, according to three people with direct knowledge of the office who view this as improper, if not unethical. 

Since the Trump impeachment announcement, there are Democrats already gunning for Shri’s seat, labeling him out of touch with voters. Yet, the Huffington Post highlighting Shri’s flimsy policy positions is somewhat entertaining: he called Israel an apartheid state and wanted to cease all aid to the Jewish state, and later joined an AIPAC trip to the country and disassociated with Democratic Socialists of America for not condemning the October 7 attacks harshly enough. I think the guy is just nuts (via NBC News): 

A two-term Michigan state representative backed by the progressive group Justice Democrats is launching a primary challenge against Rep. Shri Thanedar on Monday, setting the stage for a significant fight over the Detroit-area House seat.  The race will also serve as another proxy fight over the war in Gaza as Thanedar, previously a critic of the Israeli government in the state Legislature, renounced his membership in the Democratic Socialists of America after Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack, saying the DSA did not offer adequate condemnation of it. Earlier in 2023, Thanedar took a trip to Israel sponsored by a group affiliated with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.  In a statement, Michigan state Rep. Donavan McKinney, 32, contrasted himself with Thanedar, a multimillionaire and two-term incumbent. McKinney’s campaign described Thanedar in a press release as “Detroit’s own Elon Musk.” 

Okay, again, as I said, this party is lost. Thanedar is ‘Indian Elon Musk’—and we’re primarying him not because he’s out of his depth here, but primarily, it would seem, being that it’s Michigan—the land of Rashida Tlaib—that he became a little too cozy with Israel. 

Trump touched upon this last night, calling the Democratic Party crazy. Also, who is this guy? 

This little dance isn’t going anywhere. It was never credible, and now that a Democrat facing what could be a stiff primary challenge is using it as a life vest, it’s a full-blown joke.

🐾 Don’t underestimate the impact thousands of short training sessions can have on a willing & able dog. Don’t worry if you aren’t able to do hour long training sessions. Almost everything a service dog needs to know how to do can be learned in 5-10 minutes a couple times a day. Your greatest asset as an owner-trainer is being able to capitalize on “teachable moments” in their daily life. 100% self-paced programs like “My Service Dog & Me, LLC with Kate Olson” are invaluable and more accessible to your disability than many other training programs you find in person (although both can be important throughout the owner-training process)

🐾 Service Dog gear is for the dogs benefit not the handlers. I adore custom gear but the popular gear sets for service dogs are too hard on their bodies IMO. The way most Y-fronts SD sets are designed are ill-fitting. If they’re tight enough to not move around (which you need for mobility tasks) then they are too tight when the dog sits or lies down. If they are loose enough to be comfortable they’re too loose to be safely used for their intended purposes. If they are durable and well made they are too heavy, stiff and rub the dogs sore. It makes it hard for dogs to settle. It makes it hard for dogs to move fluidly. It creates problems where their weren’t any and masks problems when they do pop up. I still love gear and use a lot of it but I find myself leaning more towards altered sport dog gear and away from service dog gear makers. And just to clarify. I think there is a need for safe comfortable heavy mobility gear. I just don’t think that exists yet and I think mobility aids are a better alternative than what’s available.

🐾 Most vets & vet staff do not have your dogs best interest at heart. I know this is a hot take but IMO all vets (with exception for emergency clinics) should be fear free certified. They should use that as their default model and reserve more severe handling for specialty cases. I know it’s not feasible in todays world but I think most vets would agree. There’s too much pressure on them to handle dogs quickly at the expense of causing or worsening behavioral issues and they may say they make exceptions for service dogs but at the end of the day no one is holding them to that. One bad vet visit is enough to ruin a service dog. Seek out fear free certified vet appointments if you want the best odds at avoiding conflict.

🐾 Some things I look for in an ethical breeder include: “proving” all of their breeding dogs via conformation shows (for structural integrity) + work/sport (for temperament/drive/health). They should be doing all of the health testing recommended by the breeds parent club. They should be submitting OFA scores and even better is posting them publicly on their websites for all prospective owners to see. You should have easy access to their full contract when you are looking for a breeder, not that it’s hard to find or they delay sending it to you until you’re “serious” or ready to put a deposit down. I avoid health guarantees that require a particular diet/supplement or force you to surrender the dog in order to “cash in” on the guarantee (they’re counting on you to not want to give your dog up). I want a contract that requires the breeders info on the microchip and requires you to surrender the dog to them instead of rehoming or putting them in a shelter. You WANT breeder support for when you have questions, concerns or if problems arise so find someone who is easy to communicate with (bonus points for being very transparent about their breeding practices and how their dogs live & perform on social media. IMO it’s harder to hide faults in their program if they are posting openly & often)

🐾 Some red flags I look for in a prospective breeder include: Not “proving” their dogs before breeding. Not fully health testing to the level recommended by their breed club before breeding (Embark doesn’t count 🙄). Age of breeding dogs, frequency of litters & total amount of litters being produced. Saying they have testing results but haven’t posted them (there are more scammy breeders in the world than there are “special circumstances” so be careful). Full litters of service dog prospects. (Even the best nonprofit service dog breeding programs only have about a 50% success rate by their own admission) Going home before 8 weeks. Being raised in a “home environment” but not having a systematic plan or program for socializing the puppies. Not having a waitlist for the planned litter. No “stacked” or poorly “stacked” photos of the parents/offspring in their program. Unnatural colors for the breed or other signs of being a “color breeder”. Selling breeding rights without any other qualifications besides paying a higher price for the puppy. Allowing/requiring owners to choose their puppy before appropriate temperament testing is done.

In the United States, September is National Service Dog Month!

Here are some tips for anyone thinking about getting a service dog:

❤️ Most medical alerts are trained with scent detection. Blood glucose, heart rate, blood pressure, seizure, migraine, panic attack, food/environmental allergens, etc. We don’t know all of the chemicals dogs can detect, so if you are disabled and think a medical alert service dog could help you then it might be worth pursuing. (Debby Kay’s books/programs are a great place to start with scent training!)

❤️ Owner-training with positive reinforcement is totally doable! (I highly recommend the online service dog academy My Service Dog & Me LLC with Kate Olson!)

❤️ Raising and training a service dog in an apartment is doable! (I just posted about how to communicate with landlords about service dogs so definitely check that out if it applies to you!)

❤️ Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Poodles (of any size) and Smoothie Collies are called the “Fab Four” because their breed standards really jive well with service dog life. Any breed can be a service dog but not every dog can be. There’s nothing “basic” about choosing a Fab Four breed and off-breed dogs are just as valid. There are no guarantees in service dog training, so stack the odds in your favor by choosing a responsible breeder (I haven’t posted about this topic yet but there’s plenty of information about what makes a responsible breeder in the show, sport or service dog communities online)

❤️ By the legal definition, you have to be disabled to have a service dog. That doesn’t mean it has to be the last thing you try.
