I think movie buff Duke Thomas should force Jason to watch the LOTR movies and literature nerd Jason Todd should force Duke to read the books.

They should make a movie night out of it and then a weekly book club that's really just Jason periodically hacking comms during Duke's patrol so he can yell at him to finish each chapter like a deranged English teacher that follows you around at work. And then they should get into heated arguments about Tom Bombadil; and Duke should get really invested in overanalyzing all the poetry in the book trilogy; and Jason should rewatch all three movies like seven times at least so he can scribble thoughts into the margins of his paperback copies, write dissertations in his head about the effectiveness of different story changes, and cry at Sam's "But I can carry you!" without having to stop reading.

And then they should repeat all of this with The Hobbit. They're both a little psychotic about it and the rest of the family is tired.

I'm stuck in a loop where I want to sink into fiction, but I can't focus on the books I'm reading, can't write anything (and am convinced I have and will never write a decent story in my life), and none of the options of things to read/watch sound good to me.

I don't like it.

#i'm thinking i need a very low-effort creative project #something along the lines of an au #just put the pieces together and then go on my merry way #ideally collaborative because then i don't have to put in all the effort from my own imagination i can build off of/respond to someone else #i tried rereading an old wip #learned that it was *really* bad #a few fun scenes but also it sparked a minor existential crisis that i wrote 72000 words and only came up with *that*?#i looked at a few mindless brainstorming image boards #some have some fun vibes but none are sparking any intriguing brainstorms #no details to build up just my brain going 'ok vibes nice' and being unable to go deeper #i need to just chill out and move on with my life but it's bothering me because i want to have fun and i *can't*

I'm right around average height for women in the US, but I've been in male dominated fields since I started undergrad, so I'm pretty consistently one of the shorter people around.

This is fine. Not usually noticeable.

The only thing that does come up regularly is that I can't easily reach the top of whiteboards. Usually (depending on the board), I technically can, but I have to get on my tippy toes and stretch to do so. If anything was already written below it, I often smeared it.

(I simply waste several inches when teaching cause I'm not doing that in front of my class.)

Which is all to say that, recently, I wanted to modify how one of my friends wrote something on the whiteboard, which he didn’t mind. But then I stared at it for a moment and held out the marker, informing him that I couldn't reach it and he'd need to do it instead.

#we're apparently on a streak of whiteboard related stories. gotta try to remember any other incidents...#seven stories #on a different day longer ago i noticed someone had put all the markers in the common area on top of the whiteboard frames?#which i grumbled about to the same person. he more or less oftered to get them down for me #but 1. I think i could have gotten them if i jumped a little. I wasnt gonna but I could #and 2. importantly I usually use our office board if no one else is. and no one else was. I didnt need those markets at all

one time my mom was talking about something, I don’t remember what, and she said “have you ever known the poverty of having nothing to say?” and when I say nothing has ever punctured my heart quite like that statement

#I don’t even fully know why. also I don’t think she even meant it how I took it #but there is just some part of me that does believe that that is the greatest poverty #when there are no words in your mind or heart. no phrases—nothing to rely on or fall back on #and you just have to struggle with the human condition and be able to express none of it #and I know that not everyone uses words like I do or relies on them that way but people need some words. they need something #this is why a) I never make fun of those Instagram accounts that are all cheesy inspirational quotes or whatever because people are trying #they are REACHING #also b) that’s why villains who are wordlessly violently destructive make me cry #because it’s just like—-yeah I can understand turning to violence if I didn’t have expression #if I couldn’t get anything out #also also this is not related but I watched some movie or tv show the other day (and I cannot for the life of me remember which one it was)#but there was this couple on a date and the girl asks him to complete all these proverbs after she gives him the first half #because ‘a man who knows his proverbs can’t be all bad’ and it shook. Me. To. My. CORE.#also also!! this is why I teach! it’s the heart of it for me!! And why I make them memorize poetry. like.#and put quotes on the board every day. like. You will have words and images in your mind and your heart from my class if I have anything #to say about it #anyway sometimes my mom says things and casually devastates me #and I think (I think) she was just talking about the poverty of having no news because nothing is going on #and so you have nothing to share with someone. and she was talking about my Grandma and how sometimes she was just so sullen and quiet #but it’s just because there was nothing to say #anyway anyway anyway that is also why the one time on the phone my grandma said who has known the mind of the Lord —shook me so much #because she never really said anything. words were not her thing and she never quoted anything #and suddenly her saying this line of scripture that said more than any words I’d ever said —one of the defining moments of my life #tbh. anyway this is very long I’m sorry. I have woken up this morning crying about this. idk.

anyway i swept the leaves out of my garage and built a shelf and those two actions were enough to leave me too tired to do anything about the fact that now there are two shelves in my room that only has room for one of them

#ragsycon exclusive #inside you there are two shelves #one was the right depth but was made out of cheap particle board and was literally collapsing under the weight of all my books #the other is an industrial strength workshop shelf but the shelfs themselfs are too deep and now rigatoni's tank is entrenched in shadows #so i have to get a lighting system set up for my boy i guess #but i don't have the beans to go back out to the hardware store so i have to hack something together with what i have in my house #and my display shelf that was on my old shelf is now the top shelf of my new one which is higher than eye level #so i need to figure out some sort of riser system so i can see anything i even put up there #not to mention find a home for my old shelf #all this to say; i'm sitting here typing this instead of doing all that #because i'm tired #but i can't lie down because my bed is covered in half the shit i pulled off my old shelf and haven't put on the new one yet #march of the gladiators dot mp3
