In the space pirate novel I'm shopping around right now, the image the group uses as their "flag" (really more of a general logo) is in the traditional format of a skull-and-crossbones, but the skull is a wolf's skull, and the background is red.

So pretty much just for my own amusement, I decided to try and generate an image of this jolly roger in Midjourney. With just a verbal prompt, it gave me designs like this:

Close! But it specifically needs to be a wolf skull, and when Midjourney hears anything like "wolf, animal, lupine," it wants to put in fur and ears.

So! I went looking for actual wolf skulls on the Internet, because you can feed Midjourney images as part of the prompt. And I discovered something delightful: the Internet has gotten wolf skulls and raccoon skulls confused. (From the linked thread: "Raccoon skulls DO look better than wolf skulls from the front, and the compounding popularity from multiple searches has pushed it to the top of Google search for 'Wolf Skull Front View'".) Do I think my pirates should be broadcasting a raccoon jolly roger, because a hundred years in the future it will be impossible to find a real wolf skull in an image search? Yes. Yes, I do. I would love for the cover of the book to be the raccoon skull jolly roger, a joke that will never be explained or mentioned in the text.

Unfortunately it's not much easier to get Midjourney to generate a raccoon skull, and the closest I ended up getting was this unholy hybrid:

so I manually mashed the two above images together in Gimp, fed *that* back to Midjourney with the text prompt, and ended up with...

...it's a work in progress. A little more work in Gimp to shave down those ears, and I'll probably be satisfied.

Poetry week has started here in night vale. I have yet to write up that advertisement pitch, so I thought I'd use this chance to submit my ad to the radio in poetry form.

I'm not the best at poems but I can try a few and send them my best one, right? There's all kinds of different structures and formats for poems so maybe I can try a few different styles.

Those hooded figures came back, just a few of them stood outside. I wasn't sure what they wanted, I still haven't opened the box, but they don't speak so I couldn't really ask them about it.

They didn't stick around very long either, they left after about five minutes, so I didn't really have time to ask them anything if I wanted to.

I am still pretty curious about what's in the box, but I'll wait until at least after I've written some poems to open it. I can't keep procrastinating that ad if I wanna pay for a little air time on the radio to promote my shop.

A few medicines went missing the other day, I was short a few bottles on a shelf when I was doing inventory checks just before closing up as part of my routine. I couldn't find them anywhere.

It would be just my luck if someone shop lifted pain pills, wouldn't it. Ah well, they aren't too hard to make or order so I could just replace what I lost, it wasn't too much of a loss anyway. That's all that went missing too.

If anything else goes missing then I might actually start to have a serious problem on my hands to look into. I hope it's not connected to those hooded figures, that would be weird and wild, what would they need medicine for? And why steal it? No, doesn't seem like their doing.

Back to the poems, maybe I'll try a haiku? Though, counting syllables sounds tedious and haikus are a bit short.

Still, it's worth a shot, it'll be an okay first draft at least and I don't plan on sharing the drafts with anyone.

Cecil did mention something about the end of poetry week having some closing ceremony were poems were read and fed to the librarians? I doubt it's mandatory to read absolutely everyone's poems out loud to the town let alone all of the poems everyone wrote, right?

Maybe I'll include that theft as a little side note in the ad, just to ask for it back if they still have it? Or maybe not.

Oh I just remembered, I met the cutest girl today. She came in looking for an easy to care for plant for her desk at work.

I can't get over how cute she was, her smile was just adorable. And her eyes were such a beautiful colour, her voice even sounded sweet and soft like milk and honey. She's just the prettiest little cup of tea.

I suggested a few of the succulents we had, they're really easy to look after with very little attention required and most prefer not to be in direct sunlight so sitting on a desk would be perfect fine for them.

She seemed more interested in something with flowers though. I offered one of the potted baby marigolds I had just started growing and she seemed happier with that. "A little colour for the office" she called it.

Marigolds do need more attention than a succulent though, and will die off faster. They need more frequent repotting because of their growth too.

She seemed fine with all this when I told her about it. I hope there's a window near her desk, that marigold will need a lot of sun and water unlike a succulent.

Ah but she was too cute to turn down so I sold it to her. Her cuteness definitely overrides my concern for the plant. I'm only upset with myself for not learning her name.

I have to ask her for her name if she ever comes in again. I hope she does.

I could piss and moan for a long time and I've wanted to but for now let me just say that in terms of my own personal engagement with this game, I am so fed up and frustrated with it. It's format or whatever the fuck it's called is just not for me. It's killing my buzz and taking the enjoyment out of it. :/

I would need to pull 300 times if I want to redeem both Halloween Cater and Halloween Vil, both cards I really reeeeeeeeeeeeealllllly wanted. And LMFAOOOOOOO that's not going to happen. I can't even do 150 for just one of them. I wonder how many hundreds of dollars (lbr) that'd be to pull on nothing but paid gems. Which is ridiculous.... I'm dumb and don't math well so I don't feel like trying to figure it out.

I laughed when I saw the What's Coming at the end of Dec. I knew that shit was going to happen and all his cards were more or less going to bunch up in a short amount of time. Two in one month, oof. They love doing that, greedy af. After yet another banner with garbage-ass pulls there's no way I can pull on his dorm uniform, so that's great. I'm actually really pretty fucking salty about it. I've amassed enough cosmic shit to fully level up three ssr cosmic spells and have enough perfumes to uncap him 3 times, but alas. I was wrong a few months ago and still no Tamashina-Mina event but I don't see how they can keep delaying it and at this point I'm going to assume I need 200 pulls again to get Leona's card, so yeah. After that I'm going to be left with peanuts. Fun. The anni banner is apparently giving out 30 free pulls but I'm not excited about it. Anytime they've given out free pulls I've gotten nothing but crap so I don't expect any luck there whatsoever.

Completely unrelated but it's so annoying how everyone just assumes you use other sites, or I guess people mostly think of the internet as endless apps now. That's weird to me, it used to just be websites but now every goddamn site has an app and that's what people primarily use. But yeah, people will just link to shit on other sites for everything and that's useless to me. I can't see it or engage with it because I don't and won't (I outright refuse) to get accounts there. I get why they do it, the vast majority of people have no problem signing up and using these places so I'm the odd one out. It's literally what everyone uses, even pretty much all the official sources for anything and everything ever so I miss out on a lot.

Oh, a few days ago now when I opened up two separate tabs, tumblr's layout briefly (and I mean briefly) went back the original design it used to have. I got excited and thought that in addition to getting rid of live they had gotten rid of the cluttered mess it is now. Wonder what that was about......

here’s the thing: there are so many routes i could go down with this, because cockles moments come in all shapes and sizes and formats. these include moments from their panels, their bloopers, the footage we get when they don’t even know they’re being recorded, stories being passed down from photo ops & autographs(one of my personal favorite ways to get cockles, tbh, because they’re all insane), and social media(tweets to each other, instagram posts & comments, etc.). 

SO! since many a list like this has already been made, and i want to stand out from the crowd, what i’m gonna do is definitively give the number one spot to each of these five categories.(i might even throw in honourable mentions because they’re so despicably in love that they warrant that. i really put my whole pussy into this, guys, i hope you’re happy.) 

disclaimer: these are my own personal opinions. but that also means i’m right. so. enjoy. 

number one: top cockles panel moment

so we’re starting off with a bang, because how do you even BEGIN to rank what atrocities jensen and misha commit at jibcon. every single one they’ve had is damning in it’s own right, for different reasons.

however, considering just how much unabashed fuckery they’ve given us to sift through, it’s a good thing i do have a personal favorite despite it all. it’s heartwarming, the sweetest thing i’ve ever seen, AND it’s jarringly cinematic - mainly because it has a whole ass arc to it that was years in the making. it might even be surprising to some people, but my favorite cockles panel moment, and what i consider the one that encompasses their entire gut-wrenching journey from 2008-2013 in the most sweepingly romantic gesture possible, is this one.

i want this burned into my retinas. i am not even joking. when i'm through with my explanation, let me convince you why this is thee most romantic cockles moment of all time.

first, some history: people call this the resume off, but many seem to forget the botched attempt at a resume off a year prior. and yes, you guessed it: it's during their break up. it's a juicy time period for a reason, guys. it came across as exceedingly one-sided and VERY awkward. let me refresh your memory as to just how bad it was, and just how hard jensen was trying and ultimately failing at winning misha over: the funniest part of the whole resume off in 2013??? every joke/bit had literally already been made/done. they were just going through the motions again, but the difference THIS time...is that misha reciprocated jensen's energy. it. is. fascinating. i want to get into it more detail in another post, and i'll link it here when i'm done, but the main takeaway, i think, and the main difference that showcases how much they've grown in a year, is that in jib 3, misha flat out refused to do an accent, and this time around, he indulges jensen for literal minutes. when i tell you they're crazy, they're crazy. i can't wait to actually dive into it later.

ANYWAY, the resume off culminates in this moment here. and, like, a million things happen in this gifset. actually, more like a million and one. the music starts playingneediremindyouthatthesongissingingintherain(h e l p), misha starts dancing, jensen 'perpetually fake grumpy' ackles lets misha think he's not going to join, misha sits down defeated, but no!!! that was jensen's plan all along(look at his stupid fucking smirk) and he offers his arm to his dance partner who immediately grins like a fool, jensen then leads misha into their kick step, they perfectly synchronise and let loose, and are then very clearly having the time of their lives, hanging off of each other with joy and ease. from their expressions alone i can tell that this moment is so. so. so. so! much more than what initially meets the eye. i mean-misha is fighting back the biggest smile i've ever seen. to me, it reads like jensen is offering something to misha, something that misha kind of gave up on expecting, and him offering his arm like that is like, a surprise to him in the best possible way(and it's so not platonic, let me just say that.) as soon as jensen did that, it ushered in a new era of cockles. this panel is jensen and misha's favourite for a reason, and i think this moment is the biggest clue as to why.

whew!!! ok. that took a lot out of me and that was only point one. moving on,

number two: top cockles blooper moment

cockles bloopers hold an extremely special place in my heart, because it shows just how fucking disastrous jensen and misha are. they are so goddamn infatuated with each other that they HOLD UP PRODUCTION ALL THE TIME TO FLIRT WITH EACH OTHER(???). let me repeat. let it sink in. jensen ackles; arguably one of the most professional actors on that show who puts everything he has into each scene, with mountains and mountains of notes to prove it: would rather hold up production to flirt with misha collins. this sounds fake. it's not. he does it. all. the. time. and here's the thing guys!!! i'm gonna let you in on a secret!!! misha loves it. he loveesssss it. on top of that-misha collins: overlooked because he's pranked and people assume he's unprofessional as well, but his only pranks are in retaliation/off-set, and he rarely if EVER causes problems if he can help it....lets himself get carried away when it comes to jensen making kissy faces at him!!! are you actually kidding me!!! i mean. misha. it's just a face. you've seen it a million times. i don't buy that it triggers something in you that strongly....you like it, and you like jensen's reaction. you can't fool me!!! lisa berry's face in that one gifset shows just how fed up the crew is with their gross, coupley boyfriend antics.

i could pull up so many examples. sooooooo many. but my favourite was sealed since the moment i saw it.

i actually already wrote an analysis on it but i can't find it :(((( which SUCKS because i really unpacked the whole thing. i'll try to summarise.

basically, a backstory is part of this too!!! jensen and misha both had a really really hard time with this scene(because it's explicitly romantic there i said it), they sat down for hours and poured over their scripts together, they were super super nervous going into filming, both of them, jensen especially, were super hard on themselves for their performances not being true to their characters but they both complimented the other's work(boyfriend moments fr). so, yeah. they weren't confident going into shooting. and how do they get themselves to feel better???? by cuddling each other, apparently.

a lot. a LOT. happens in this specific blooper. to the point that i saw it years before i knew about cockles and it raised all sorts of flags for me.

1) stop pulling my face towards your crotch(as a thinly veiled request that misha would, in fact, move jensen's face towards his crotch, considering it was jensen moving himself there in the first place. also, why so comfy down there guys???) 2) you're my baby daddy i know(in the most intimate voice i've ever heard please) 3) i know, i know, i love you too i didn't say i love you i know but you wanted to say it etc. misha's right, of course. that's what jensen meant.

it just reeks of comfort, familiarity and intimacy between the two, and it's a moment that is extremely sweet and silly at the same time. they're so <3

number three: top cockles found footage moment

WONDERFUL category. truly the culmination of the cockles experience. many people have said that shipping cockles doesn't work because 'they're just onstage you dummies!! they're playing it up for the audience!!!' here's the thing, love. i could not disagree with you more. once you climb your way up the cockles ladder, you soon learn that they are, in fact, playing their dynamic DOWN, not up. they really are just Like That™, and they could not care less about the paying audience, if we're being honest, considering how much time they take to giggle with each other and refuse to let the audience in on the joke. and i love them for it <3

anyway, my point is that this category is for all you naysayers out there, all you 'jensen and misha's relationship is just for show and is real life queerbaiting'(?????lordhelp???) oh yeah? ok, explain this.

he. he. he calls jensen sweetheart. literally enough said. there's nothing to really add here, except, misha and jared then immediately engage in damage control. jared's method is distraction and misha's is retconning('get out of the car, dude') this was what got me to buy into the cockles dumpster for GOOD good. you don't call your buddy sweetheart accidentally and sound so completely earnest while doing it! especially not when that buddy is jensen ackles!!! you think he would let any of his friends call him that? do you?

one more thing; if it was a slip of the tongue, little mouth thing or whatever, you think jared wouldn't have jumped on it immediately??? i can hear it now. 'did you just call him SWEETHEART???' yeah. that's what i thought. you know why he didn't? because it was too revealing.

number four: top cockles autograph moment

i mean, i think we all know what it's gonna be, and if you don't, well, do i have the piece de cockles resistance that is gonna send you over the edge.

if you haven't heard of this story by now, as a cockles, truther, i'm gonna go ahead and get you to read it, because there is no possible heterosexual explanation for any of it, and you're fooling yourself if you think otherwise.

spoiler alert: it's the story where phones weren't allowed in an auto session, jensen nuzzles himself in misha's hair, leans his full body weight onto him, holds his hand, etc. etc. i'm imploding just repeating this back, actually. also, just, the sheer amount of stories from photo ops where they tackle hug each other or slap each other's asses or sing romantic songs to each other or almost kiss is, frankly, a lot. if i could wish for anything, it would be to witness them in person.

and finally,

number five: top cockles social media moment

this one is super difficult, because there's obviously a lot to choose from. but you know what? full send, i'm going with this one:

i just. what to say about this. how often do misha and jensen watch sunsets together for it to qualify as ‘always’ ??? why are sunsets synonymous with their relationship??? that’s like??? a very romantic thing????? ‘this guy’??? the fact that it’s a CANDID??? i don’t know guys.

Ozymandias (Wilbur Finale Spoilers)

I met a traveller from an antique land, Who said - "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert. . . . Let's talk Ozymandias:

Ozymandias's first application to the dream dsmp lore was way back when L'Manberg lost the war of Independence. Wilbur asked Fundy to read the poem after Tommy had lost the duel to Dream. So, in Wilbur's eyes at the time (moments before Tommy won independence through disc bargaining), this poem was applicable. Here exactly is what Fundy read (video link here):

"My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings; Look on my Work[s], ye Mighty, and despair! Nothing beside remains, Round the decay Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare The lone and Level sands stretch far away"

He reads the last bit, which is about how Ozymandias's declaration of majestic works and greatness to his name- how he is the king of kings, has nothing to show as time had washed away everything leaving nothing but ruins and sand. Nothing remains of the King of King's kingdom. It fits the mood, as they believe they had just lost the revolution. It's also of note Wilbur is fond of the poem, and has his son read it, if you want sort of a cwilbur and cfundy family moment.

As far as I'm aware, the next time people started paying attention to the is when SAD-ist made this animation to a reading of it. Here, Technoblade is the traveler, looking at a representative desert of ruins and a statue of Wilbur in his L'Manberg Uniform. During the line, "My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings; / Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!" Wilbur goes from his L'Manberg uniform to his Pogtopia outfit, as he's gleefully smiling and gesturing to the destruction he caused on November 16. The rest of the poem finishes as it switches to Doomsday, the final time L'Manberg was destroyed.

The third time I've seen Ozymandias being of Lore Importance is Eret's latest stream, where he read Wilbur's book. The book has ten pages, and I'm not going to go through page by page what it says as formatting-wise that would take up a lot of space. I'm going to start talking about it on Page Five:

"Your grand works and statues will outlive any of the horrible tales spun about your past."

This reminds me of the Legacy theme everyone has been going on about for a while. It fits, especially considering this started out with Hamilton RP (well really breaking bad-esque bits but you know), and one thing Hamilton really is invested in his Legacy.

"Legacy. What is a Legacy? It's planting seeds in a garden you never get to see... America, you great unfinished symphony, you sent for me. You let me make a difference..." -The World Was Wide Enough, Hamilton

It also reminds me of the imagery of Ozymandias. A lone statue is all that's left of a once grand kingdom; statues and physical monuments lasting longer than Eret's past. Granted, Wilbur's message to Eret is a lot more uplifting compared to the poem, but I want to mention it regardless.

Page 6:

"When the day comes and we all finally pass on I like to think we all reconvene in a large desert. I want to believe that the desert is where people start anew and figure out who they were supposed to be in this grand life of ours [.]"

Page 7 and 8:

"We were supposed to be together in that desert recounting times we were adversaries and shaking hands with our foes" "We still have a long way to go through. but that desert, that blank slate of sand Its waiting for us"

Something I want to note here is that Wilbur isn't talking about Limbo. He's talking about something else. A lore detail I always thought was interesting was that the "Afterlife" was named by Wilbur to be Limbo. Limbo, by definition, is "an uncertain period of awaiting a decision or resolution; an intermediate state or condition." That, paired with Wilbur's Jubilee Line imagery of an underground train station he can't leave, always gave me the impression that Limbo could lead somewhere. But, the closest thing I ever got was the trains are meant to transport souls to (and from) Limbo. (I.E: Tommy, Ghostbur, and Wilbur.) The trains didn't actually pick up souls to take them somewhere else in the afterlife. So, while it's an interesting idea and good for fanfic world-building, I don't really expect it to go anywhere in canon.

Eret herself brings up Ozymandias, but aside from the desert imagery here being more positive, there's not much here I can decipher. All Eret added is Wilbur was fond of this poem, before moving on to the "c u in ut". This leads us to September 3rd:

So, I'm editing this post-Finale Stream. Right now, c!Wilbur's story is over. It's been a good ride, and while I can poke fun at the Utah bit (cause seriously wtf /lh), it brings the dmsp back to its roots. Fun lore. Even amongst Wilbur's dramatic long speeches that empowered a revolution, he fucked a fish and gave birth to a fox. He sings Hamilton and goofs off with Tommy. I like how he did that on his last c!stream. It feels nice. Like a book-end. Full circle. Whatever else you want to call it.

But anyway, Utah. Not only is Utah a desert state (landlocked like why did you try to sail there you dumb bitch I thought you played geoguessr /lh), but we actually see c!wilbur IN UTAH in a wild live-action scene Wilbur filmed with Shubble when he was visiting America. He lives in a desert now.

One way to take this is literal. Wilbur is moving to a desert. Getting his "Blank slate" by moving back to Utah. And someday he hopes his friends and foes alike can visit him. He's off to start anew, and so this is his goodbye. But not forever.

Another way to take this is metaphorical. The line "when we all pass on" gives it a feeling like he's talking about an afterlife. I've already mentioned why I'm a bit confused about that since limbo exists, but still. By this logic, Wilbur's idea of a good afterlife is a desert, a blank slate, where he and everyone else can start anew. Friends and foes alike. Eret even points out the connection here to Ozymandias, reading out loud the poem after he read through the book.

So, that's all I have so far. Thanks for reading if you made it this far. I know it's long. I was also going to bring into Fundy's connection to deserts but I couldn't segway into that easily. It was just pointing out that his prophetic nightmares took place in a desert and trying to maybe connect it to either the poem or Wilbur's connection to the desert. which at the time wasn't Utah. Now, idk. It's already very long so I had to cut it since it was already half-formed ideas.

Yancy being totally flustered and ruined by Illinois calling him pet names is totally valid but you know what’s better? The first time Yance feels comfortable enough and happy enough to be like ‘Aww, Illi, ain’t you a doll?’ and Illinois stops dead because HE does the pet names and complimenting, HE does the charming. No one charms him. But his heart is Bang Bang Banging and Yancy has a 404 adventurer on his hands.

Notes (more notes at the end): finally got around to writing something for these two. i put the call out for prompts for yancy/illinois two and a half weeks ago and im finally writing about them. i jsut finally felt inspired and woo boy this got really soft i was dying writing them holding hands.

Another adventure successfully and mostly safely completed, and anotherpriceless artefact soundly and more than mostly safely delivered to the museum.

This wasn’t the first adventure Yancy had tagged along on, but this was thefirst time he’d come with Illinois to the museum to deliver what they’dretrieved and Illinois felt stupid for worrying about whether Yancy was goingto like it or not. Of course he was going to like it, I mean thisplace had the most complete triceratops skeleton in the world! Okay… that’sone of the reasons he liked it, didn’t mean Yancy would. Illinoisforgot a lot of the time that not everyone found old fossils and relics andremains as interesting or cool as he did.

Luckily, Yancy had been enthralled as Illinois walked him around theexhibits and gave him his own exclusive, honorary tour, that was packed withway more information, and much more accurate information, than the museum’sofficial tour guides could ever offer, and hey he also heard this exclusivetour had the best looking guide.

And also luckily Yancy hadn’t gotten bored or fed up of him rambling andgetting over-excited, he’d just listened to everything and smiled and been sosupportive Illinois hadn’t felt this… it felt too early to say ‘loved’…admired maybe… He hadn’t felt this ‘unnameable positive emotion that made hischest feel warm and tight’ in a long time.

“Hey you know, there’s a cafe next to the lobby in here, and when it’snice and hot like this they sell ice cream, you want to grab any? Mytreat?” He asked Yancy once he’d finally finished leading him around theexhibits.

“Aww, Illy, ain’t you a doll.”

Illinois froze.

What… just happened?

Did Yancy just… call him a pet name?

No, no, no, that was his job, he was meant to be the onefull of compliments and pet names. He charmed people, people didn’tcharm him.

People didn’t… When was the last time anyone had charmed him?Illinois tried to think back and sure he knew when people were looking at himlike they wanted to do something to him, or wanted him to do something to them,but no one really flirted with him unless the occasional confident soul shot afew lines back at him as he winked and smiled.

But no one called him pet names, people didn’t call him pet names, Yancyhadn’t ever called him by a pet name before. Yancy was cute and softer, whileIllinois was stoic and cocky and tough, not that Yancy wasn’t tough but… Theway Yancy had said that…

It was just a pet name, just one word, why the hell was he freaking out somuch? He felt the urge to put a hand on his chest to see if his heart reallywas having as much of a fit as he thought it was. His cheeks felt hot, had theyalways felt that hot? It was fairly warm in here but the museum did have airconditioning but it was the summer so-

Something flashed across his face.

There it was again.

It was Yancy’s hand.

“Ill? I didn’t break yous, did I?” Yancy was a lot closer than hehad been before, when did he move? Oh god Illinois prayed to whatever strangedeity might shine down on him that he hadn’t just been standing here for whoknows how long staring into space.

“No, no,” Illinois cringed and coughed as he heard his voice comeout almost squeaky. “Not at all darlin’ you just, uh, took me bysurprise with that is all.”

“With what?” Yancy tilted his head to the side.

Okay maybe he could get away with pretending this never happened. “Oh,nothing, don’t worry about it, but I was saying wasn’t I that I would-”

“It’s cause I called yous ‘doll’ ain’t it?” Yancy was grinning butthere was an insecurity there as if he was afraid of being embarrassed if hewas wrong.

“I, uh,” Illinois shook his head. “Alright, you caught me. Ijust… didn’t expect the pet name is all.”

“Yous seemed to short circuit on me for a second there. How not used toit are you?” Yancy laughed and Illinois dug thumbs under his belt andbalanced back on his heels as he ducked his head (something he was starting tolearn was a nervous tick of his, not that he got nervous of course). “Oh,real not used to it huh?” And Yancy knew what his body language meant andthat was something unusual but… sweet. Not many people had stuck around(whether by their own choice or… not their own choice) long enough to get toknow him this well.

“I suppose I’m used to being the charmer but not the charmee,”Illinois joked, or at least tried to, it must have not worked considering theserious expression on Yancy’s face. “Yance? That’s not… weird, right?How I reacted, I mean.”

Yancy’s eyes stayed serious but he smiled. “Oh not at all, doll.I'ms just thinking what I can dos with this information.” And he smirked,Illinois hadn’t even known Yancy knew how to smirk. “So, what was thatyous were saying about getting us ice cream, sweetheart?”

Oh no. This was bad. This was very, very bad. Yancy had too much power.

He his face heating up had nothing to do with the room temperature thistime. His hand found it’s way up and tugged at the collar of his shirt.

“Yeah,” He tried to shake the feelings off. “I’ll lead theway.”

Yancy, shyly but slyly leaned into him as they walked and brushed theirhands together. Illinois almost jumped, but pushed his hand back into Yancy andhe saw how Yancy’s face lit up from the corner of his eye. Something like thiswas a big step for both of them, both touch-starved from their time alone, butYancy was also so used to people touching him because they were hurting him.Illinois was making sure that never happened again, and was trying his best notto mess things up.

Yancy smiled and held his hand and squeezed it and just looked so darn cutethat Illinois turned his head to the side and slid his hand over his stubbleand over his mouth.

“Yous alright, Noisy?”

“I’m fine, Yancy.” Illinois sighed and dropped his hand, failingto fight the smile off his face.

“Alright,” Yancy cocked his head and grinned. “Doll.”

An Evening of Online Plays Right in our Living Room Directed by Missouri S&T Theatre

It was a cool and rainy evening when Dana and I followed the Zoom link and joined viewers across the country to see "An evening of Online Plays"

Produced by Missouri S&T Theatre. One of our dear friends Erin Lane had one of her pieces in the bill of four 10 minute plays to be presented that night and invited us to come watch. This night of online theater, produced by Taylor Gruenloh and presented by Missouri S&T theatre students was our first time reviewing a Zoom Production and definitely will not be our last.

This was directed by two students of Missouri S&T's directing program. When classes were cancelled for Victoria Hagni and Madeline Lechner their professor Taylor Gruenloh knew that unless they actually produced a finished project it wouldn't feel as if the two students weren't getting the most out of their independent study. So they quickly changed gears and commissioned ten minute plays from four playwrights from my graduate program Hollins University that would work perfectly in a Zoom format. This livestream is that final result.

It's worth mentioning what Dana and I are looking for when we review a production produced on an online platform streamed out of people's homes. We of course are looking at the level of acting and the production value of the plays but we are also looking at how this new medium of performance is taken advantage of and how the artists worked within those constraints. We are definitely as much beginners at reviewing this as the artists are performing in it. We also know that these students were ramping up and learning for something completely different than pioneering a new artform so we empathize. So now that we know we're both adjusting to a learning curve let's get down to the nitty gritty.

We've decided to talk about the plays grouped by the director not in the order that they were presented and since these were brand new plays written just for the production we're reviewing the plays too.

First we're looking at the plays directed by Madeline Lechner.

De-Equalized by Amy Lytle is a play about two students Katie (played by Natalie Arnold) and Jordan (played by Adam Bateman) who are working on a group project while they are separated on spring break.

I'll admit putting this play up as the first play we see was a very eerie experience. Not just because it was about two students talking about a group project over Zoom but also because this was Dana and my first primer into what a Zoom production is. Seeing the screen jump back and forth between the two actors like it was cutting back and forth like in a movie was bizarre but I was immediately intrigued by the possibilities.

I was very impressed with the actors trying their hardest to emote to somebody that is not physically in the room with them. I felt like Arnold did a better job at this than her acting partner. I can only imagine having to not only keep myself cheated open for the audience but also knowing that my acting partner is a small post card sized picture on a screen. Also knowing that your performance depends on the connectivity of your device and the tilt of your camera is probably as big of a rush as tightrope walking. But because of this feeling of risk some of their emotions seemed to go stagnant. I needed to feel like this energy could travel eight hundred miles.

This could have been an acting problem but I definitely feel like some of this sits on Lechner's shoulders as a director. If the energy isn't shaking the rafters you definitely need to find ways to ramp your actors up. But we also feel like the playscript didn't give them higher stakes to begin with. Not everyone reveals family secrets doing homework. Also Dana never believed she was going to walk out on him which really did kill the stakes.

As for the play Dana noticed there was a lot of exposition about scholarship and financial aid that anyone watching a college show would know. We would hope that in a further draft the playwright would trust her audience more. I loved the idea of students finding out something about a friend that they didn't know before but also wish that the action had started way earlier. The play spent so much time on exposition I feel like the play didn't start until the eight minute mark and then they only had two minutes left. In a future draft I really hope this is addressed.

Also directed by Lechner was Breathe by Erin Lane a play about Dory (played by Raelyn Twohy) and Michael (played by Michael Ellis) two parents having to coparent while being separated and trying to calm each other down while also trying to appear strong for the other.

I love that this play made use of ANY kind of action and it was a great refresher from Lechner's previous piece. I still would have asked for much more. Also Dana got the sense that this play was supposed to have a lot of chaos in it but in her words it was "the calmest chaos she's ever seen". I agree. Especially if this is a play about getting the results of a test be it Covid-19, AIDS, pregnancy, or even strep I think you would feel a TAD more tense than that. This harkens back to what I said before about Lechner and getting energy out of her performers. As a director I will tell her you have to do whatever it takes to get that energy out of your cast because if we as an audience don't feel it we're gone. This was a great first outing and if I'm sounding tough it's because I feel she does have potential to do well in the future. Just get that energy in!

As for the acting it seemed that while Dana and I believed the Dad instantly we felt something was "held back" from us. We don't know if that was an acting problem or a writing problem. I am leaning heavily towards acting because of the several "I forgot my line" pauses and constant repeats of cue lines we normally see in high school productions. I personally think it must have been hard to show so much emotion just using your eyes and not having a full stage to work with but if these pauses normally just slow down a stage show on Zoom they felt like an eternity.

This play utilized my very favorite kind of exposition where everything we needed to know about the action was fed to us through something that we already knew. We all know that kind of back and forth between a Mom and Dad as they suss out parenting. But then you have this through the lens of long distance. Someone can't be home and now they have to trust someone else to get it done. This is the coolest kind of love story for me. However due to dropped lines and pauses I totally lost the part where Dory is a nurse and that she's taking a Covid-19 test. Dana had to tell me based on her scrubs. I hope that a future production of this play has the faster pace and the higher stakes it deserved.

Also a quick note: I know that no one is really pioneering Zoom set design just yet but I feel that I have to mention the black curtain behind Ellis's back. Dana and I have a running joke where we wonder if there is a "different play behind the curtain" that's more interesting than the one we're seeing. This presented a literal version of that for us where we spent more time wondering what was behind that curtain than listening to what he was saying. Out of love for these actors and with mad respect for what they're doing even if the curtain is hiding dead bodies we kinda hope it isn't there in the future. You guys rock and deserve better than that.

Next we'll be talking about the plays directed by Victoria Hagni.

In Scaramouch and Pinochle by Mike Moran we meet Lizzie (played by Megan Baris) and Bella (played by Haley Jenkins) two sisters who were separated when they were little and adopted by families across the country. Now they're reconnecting.

I loved that this play involved some action that fills up the camera frame and that Hagni gave the actresses some business to do such as painting nails and looking for things. If you think of the screen as your proscenium arch then you start to realize that you can utilize all of that space to tell your story.

Dana loves the use of props and the chemistry between the two actresses even though there were some moments that seemed like they were talking more at the screens than to each other. As you guys know I'm a sucker for puppets so even a sock puppet wormed it's way into my heart.

As for the script I feel like the realization about the Mom’s death and other family drama wasn’t "earned". There was no build up to it so I don't know whether it really happened or if our character was just lying. Where the chemistry between the actresses seemed natural the tense moments in the play didn’t seem natural. Overall it was a very cute play and with a couple more revisions it would be perfect.

In Folies a Deux/Pas de deux by Kevin D. Ferguson we meet Amanda Toye as Woman and Luke Goekner as Man. They are a couple with an interesting history and reconnecting after a long time.

I absolutely ADORED the use of the whole kitchen and room as a playing space. Having her start "upstage" at the counter and then moving the camera around as she moved dropped us into the world of the play. This was the first time that I forgot I was watching a Zoom play and just started watching the show. If I have to give one criticism to Hagni at all it is that I would have loved to see this kind of blocking in her previous piece.

I really commend the actors for really knowing their lines, really getting this blocking down, and committing to it. I mean somebody made cupcakes for this show! That's commitment.

Dana feels like this one was the most theatrical because it would definitely work on a stage AND online. This was the play that she absolutely believed with all her heart. I was totally pulled in. This is one of those plays that just make you want to sit in front of a computer and write a play.

The hardest part I'm going to notice about directing and writing for this medium is that you're simultaneously directing a theatre production and producing a movie. The actors aren't just actors they become directors of photography. The only difference between these plays and a movie is that a movie would be recorded for later and edited by someone else. I'm predicting that the most successful Zoom productions will be the ones that blur these lines. Is this naturalistic theatre or an indie found footage film. Who knows and who cares? Actors are not just emoting as if they're in the smallest of black box theaters but also thinking in terms of setups and dynamic camera angles. This is going to be a hard skill to master and in thirty or so years we'll be reading textbooks about the people who started this trend thinking about how we were all just figuring it out.

Also I'm looking forward to the day when we literally don't have the big pink elephant of COVID-19 in the room with us. Right now anytime you see a play livestreamed we all kind of know why it's not being presented onstage. So effectively even if the play doesn't explicitly say so it inherently is about this pandemic I know it's going to be at least a few years before this isn't the case but I will welcome it with open arms.
