every wednesday night, you and ushijima agreed that it should be date night. ever since he became a professional volleyball player, his schedule was constantly packed. you were around a lot, yes, but not without the flashing cameras and constant parading questions.

of course, he married you the moment you got out of high school. he loved you and didn't see anyone else in the picture. he was quiet and very, very reserved. no matter how much an interviewer could push, no one knew wakatoshi like you did.

so, like clockwork, you two got ready and went out to the fancy restaurant about twenty minutes from your shared home. he drove you everywhere, hand constantly resting on your thighs. he was the gentlemen, opening your door, keeping his arm around you to steer clear of puddles.

" you look lovely, as always " he muttered, leaning down close to your ear as you two waited nicely to be seated.

as you walked to your table, you quickly noticed how troublesome these heels would be, but you were sitting for ninety percent of the night. so, no big deal! the kinda hostess showed you to a nice corner with no one else, sitting you at the table you always sat at.

ushijima pulled your chair back, waiting till you were all settled before helping you push back in. he sat down across from you, shifting setting the napkin over his knee. he looked over and softly smiled, eyes crinkling.

" thank you for accompanying me tonight. " he hummed, aligning his silverware just how he liked.

" oh, toshi, you need to stop that! I hope I'm the only one accompanying you, ever " you retorted, chuckling softly as the waiter came by and poured your signature red wine.

ushijimas eyes flickered up to yours, with a concerned look, " of course, do you think otherwise? " he asked, but you couldn't tell if he was joking or not.

the rest of the dinner was always the same, constant compliments from ushijima that left you blushing and giggling. you two ate like normally, ushijima paid like normally (even though marrying technically shares a bank account), and you two were up and ready to go home.

ushijima held the middle of your back, helping you walk with his pace. your long and quick strides made your feet cramp, but you tried to hide the way your eyebrows furrowed with every step. the stone walkways didn't make it any better, only unstable ground to trip over.

ushijima noticed how you were quiet, eyes focused on the ground to not fall flat on your face. " are you alright, darling? " he asked, looking down at you.

" mhm! sorry just tired " you chimed, wincing when your thin heel hit a crack in the stone.

without a moment too long to think, you noticed ushijima reaching further around your back and his other arm reaching for your legs. his cool hands pulled your legs up, readjusting to carry you in bridal style.

" ushijima wakatoshi! what are you doing!? " you yelped, immediately wrapping your arms around his neck and looking away from the ground.

the public eye sneered, either out of jealousy or discomfort. did ushijima care? absolutely not. his wife was in pain, and he was relieving it. everyone should have a ushijima in their lives!

" your feet hurt " he calmly said, looking at you from the corner of his eye, " I don't want it to ruin your night. is this alright? " he asked curiously, not wanting to overstep your boundaries.

" I - " you laughed, pressing a kiss into his cheek, " oh, toshi, this is plenty alright. thank you " you sighed, kicking your feet freely and continuing to laugh.

seeing you smile and hearing your laugh, so carefree while in his arms, gave him his own sense of comfort. he smiled softly, before chuckling and shaking his head. " what will the world do with you when I'm gone? " he asked to himself.

I hate what the Israeli government is doing but I'm scared of contributing to the rise in anti-semitism in the US. I'm not Jewish and not super keyed in to anti-semitism. Obviously, anyone talking shit about the Jewish people is someone I should fight, but there are things I should watch out for even when they say "Israel," right? What kind of rhetoric should I be on the lookout for?

What makes this hard, is that there is no collective Jewish take on this. There are some Jews who would tell you that any criticism of Israel is inherently anti-Semitic. There are other Jews who would tell you that Jewish support for the modern state is antithetical to the values at the core of our ethics and faith.

Both of those types of Jewish thinkers follow this blog, as do Jews holding views everywhere in between.

So what I'm going to tell you isn't The Jewish Stance on this, but the stance I've developed as a Modern Jewish historian who also happens to be a Jewish person with leftist politics.

Here is a list of narratives and rhetorical patterns to watch out for:

-individuals or spaces which view jews as inherently unworthy of trust, and require them to consistently prove that they are a "Good Jew"

-rhetoric which continuously singles out Israeli human and civil rights abuses, while failing to hold other states committing equal or much larger scale abuses to the same standards

-speech which implies that the Jews can fit neatly into the role of "white colonizer"

-visual languages which super-impose Nazi imagery over Jewish symbols

-Blood Libel rhetoric, which accuses Israel of using the blood or murdered Palestinian babies for its bread, or harvesting Palestinian organs for the black market. This type of rhetoric has been circulating the western world for literal centuries, and it always ends with Jews being expelled and/or burnt at the stake.

And this is kind of where the classic "I can't define it but I know it when I see it" porn definition comes in. Sometimes someone screaming about "The Zionists" is someone deeply disturbed by, say, the frankly fascistic behavior of Israelis in West Bank Settlements. Sometimes, that person is furious that Jews are asking them to critically examine the role of any or some of the above elements in their speech regarding Israel and Israelis.

Some Jews will weaponize a lot of our traumatic past to silence other Jews, and say that by writing this I am no better than the Jewish Police who rounded up their people for the Treblinka transports. Other Jews will say that by writing any of this, I'm silencing necessary speech regarding the war crimes in Gaza and that I'm complicit in the ongoing ethnic cleansing of Palestinian civilians as a result.

But this is my basic, 101 level response, and it's not going to change.

I really, truly, appreciate your how deeply you care about grasping these issues. If you have any follow-up questions I'd be happy to answer them under similar understandings of username exclusion.

EDIT: She goes under starfallbluez now on Tiktok. Not sure if she goes by that name everywhere else now. She reverted her username on bsky back to jell-o101 Short form evidence pile that has a couple of screenshots and a video of our interactions over the course of a few years while I was 12, herself 19. To put it into perspective, she's 27 years old now, I'm about to turn 22 this month. Our interactions went on for years, talking up to when I was 16, when I cut her off. Her FB name was publically available, so for the interest of clarity, I censored her last name, but her name is Yendy. In that time, she had me draw Under'tail' pieces of Sans and Papyrus, which I didn't agree to her liking, but she was a huge inspiration for me and I ended up rolling with it because she shipped them. She had me fetch art works from the internet for her as well to get off to. She's currently more localized in the Super Mario Bro's fandom, (and Super Paper Mario), and Cookie Run Kingdom which is. All very concerning to me because of her history with me. Anyway - until the longer form version I'm making comes out, happy pride month!! a/n: honestly had a thought that theo wouldn’t be the one with good online safety habits, and since the reader’s super tech-savvy, it created this sweet, mildly stressful, and kinda educational moment. tried to keep it easy to follow, even if you’re not into tech stuff. Summary: A coding stream takes a turn when a casual chat with Theodore reveals a surprising security risk, and a very patient lesson in digital hygiene begins.

Your stream was already buzzing. No League today, no cozy indie games. Just your VSCode window open, some terminal lines running, and a full-blown “tech talk” kind of vibe.

“So,” you said, gesturing at your screen, “when someone logs into a website, their info—like username and password—gets sent over HTTPS. That’s basically a secure connection. Like a locked box for your data.”

Next to you on camera, Theodore nodded slowly while sipping his tea, trying to look like he understood more than five percent of what you just said.

“So… it’s like an invisibility cloak for your password?”
