going through my first new game+ run and have reached this conversation in old lumière which i now realise this time around is renoir referring to clea in her younger days:

i have some thoughts to share. spoilers for act 3 (including side quests/late-game optional content) under the cut:

i think it's truly painful to think about because of all the siblings, it's clea who most loved the kind of art her family's renowned for. she loves painting and the artistic form so well that she clearly wanted to spend her youth bringing all sorts of wonderous tales to life within her own canvases, and became upset upon realising she'd never have enough time to truly be able to do that with all of the great fables to ever exist.

(not to say verso and alicia definitely didn't also enjoy painting, just to clarify, because they probably did, but verso's big love was his music and alicia appears to have inclinations towards writing, if the secret library/study area connected to her room in the manor is anything to go by.)

the way renoir/the fading man talks about it makes it sound like a true childhood wonder, and maybe that's exactly what it was – how many of us creatively-inclined have felt the same melancholy at some point or another, knowing that there was and still is so much artistic brilliance out there in the world; more than we'll ever get to even know about? i don't personally hold the belief that dreams like that are dangerous, but it would not surprise me if the eldest daughter of the head of the artists' council was told to treat it that way by her mother if it upset her enough to distract her from the work and the legacy she'd stood to grow into.

but then i remembered the lampmaster, and the way the fading boy (verso) describes it in a way that almost sounds like a fable in and of itself; a ghost story brought to life, playing on his fear of the dark. clea used to feel (and maybe still does deep down?) like she should see all the fables of the world so that she can recreate them in her own canvas; assuming the lampmaster is not one such fable, has she not made one of her own in creating it?

separately from all of the above, i'd been thinking about her well-documented penchant for perfection, and how that might impact her issues with the portraits of her painted by her parents: an axon – and i have a lot of thoughts on The Hauler which i will probably go into in a separate post – which she empowered simon to kill, and a literal recreation of herself, which is implied to have insulted her to the point of her repainting (read: hijacking) her painted self to suit her own needs.

putting the two separate trains of thoughts together then got me thinking: what fable-equivalents are there in the canvas world? there's esquie and the gestrals which verso created, sure; but there's also the nevrons, the lampmaster, dualliste, françois– all created by clea. in a world that exists solely within a canvas like lumière/the continent, the only fables to be found are that which the painters create; and with the exception of françois who's magnificiently rocky turtle-y self could never be duplicated, clea has puppeted her mother's portrait of her to diligently recreate every fabled creature she's brought into existence, over and over again.

and so there her painted self is, fufilling the dream the real clea had as a child: knowing about all the fables of the world, and faithfully bringing them to life within the canvas. its a dream so powerful it literally kills her in the end, because it's not truly her dream – it's just another goal passed down from creator/mother to creation/daughter. clea may have inherited her perfectionism and single-minded focus on her war from her mother, whether she wanted to inherit them or not. in creating more nevrons until she is stopped by expedition 33, her painted self has inherited – unwillingly, as we well know – the same things from her in turn.

random headcanon: Aoyama likes to knit but he's pretty self-conscious about it, so for the longest time Ichino was the only one to know about his hobby.

(this was inspired by a sudden need to try to knit some kind of inazuma mittens, colorwork is always a struggle for me but I think they turned out nice! and one person who knows inazuma already recognized them as a fandom design so that's another plus)

Okay I want to say something that is really important to me personally!!! If you make fanart, any kind of fanart that's about or related to a part of a show that has not come out yet (for example a new season)... Then that is still valid fanart once that part of the show is released. Even if the speculating fanart you made can not be canon anymore after the new season is released.

And just as importantly: if you have fanart planned concerning a part of a show that hasn't come out yet, but aren't able to finish that fanart before that part of the show is released, then you should still make that fanart after the new part of the show has come out!!!!

As an example I'll take Squid Game cause that is what I'm currently stressing myself about. I have a lot of fanart ideas that I want to draw or have already started that are speculation on what will happen in season 3. I won't be able to finish or even start most of them before season 3 comes out on friday. But that's okay!! It is totally okay for me to still make that fanart Even If my idea or speculation on season 3 will be proven to be wrong. And that goes for everyone in this fandom. If you have a really cool fanfic idea on how for example In-ho's identity reveal to Gi-hun will go and then the season comes out and it happens differently (which is very likely), then you should still write your fanfic about it!!!

The same goes for fanart that's based on lore that has been updated in the new season.

Also lastly: it's also very cool to make fanart of things that have happened in past seasons and topics that have already been resolved. Just because Gi-hun after season 3 will know that In-ho is the frontman doesn't mean you can't make fanart of him not knowing that anymore. Okay? Okay! Great <3

I love you, keep making great fanart and don't stress yourself because you feel like you need to get all your stuff out there before it can be "disproven". Fandom is about fun and creativity and there is never a point in time where your fanart is "wrong" or "too late" <3

I think that in a PMD Explorers of Sky adjacent situation, Chat would be the protagonist and Magical John would be the partner character. Chat would wake up on the beach with amnesia and see Magical John passed out next to them. They poke him with a stick and when it turns out he's alive, they initially assume he's in the same situation as they are. But it turns out he just got mugged by the Team Skull equivalent for his Relic Fragment, and his memories are totally intact, lol.

They'd have to talk to Cupcake on Magical John's behalf to help him join the guild because everyone's too afraid of him to hear him out when he tries to ask alone, lmao.

Cupcake would be the cheerful Guild Deputy, and I Want Die would be the intimidating Guild Leader that everyone but Cupcake is afraid to talk to. He looks scary, but he's actually really caring and compassionate on the inside! And the other Miitopia party members would be the guild ensemble! :D

Jefferson would be a Piplup, of course, and I think Gilbert would be an Impidimp. Not sure about the rest. Lemme know if any of you have any ideas! :)

Want to see some neat things about how irises grow?

Remember when I dug up and divided ALL of my irises at my parents' place a few years back? And how I ended up with 50 rhizomes, and I had bought 9 more just a bit before that?

Well, my mom wants to try to amend the soil because it's not great. Most of the irises have just been surviving, but not well enough to bloom, and everything else planted in the area struggles similarly. In order to amend the soil, though, I needed to dig them all up.

Again.

I dug up 44 rhizomes this time, which is honestly a bit better than I expected. I knew that not all of the ones I put in were going to survive, but I was still surprised by how many I just dug up today.

Anyway, the learning bit!

So irises aren't bulbs, they're rhizomes. Each year they put up leaves at one end, and over time they kind of end up migrating in that direction. If they do really well at gathering and storing energy, instead of just continuing forward, they'll fork, putting up leaves on two sides and a stalk with blooms in the center. The following year, the pattern continues, going forward from each side of that fork. If a rhizome does REALLY well, you'll end up with a bunch of forks spreading out.

The one on the left has survived, but not gone very far, and the white at the end shows that I accidentally broke some of the old rhizome off when I was digging it back up. It also happens to be a dwarf variety, so the rhizome is smaller to begin with; all my other photos are of intermediate and tall bearded irises with much larger rhizomes.

The one on the right has done well enough to grow forward for a few years, with the oldest of the rhizome at the bottom (still healthy and full of stored energy!) and the newest year's growth at the top. Looking at the rhizome itself, I'd guess that one is about 4 years (which makes sense, 'cause I think I did the splitting back in 2020).

The one on the left bloomed this year; you can see the flower stalk dried out in the center, and the new fork in the rhizome to the sides. Next year, they'll continue in those two directions, and it won't go forward from the stalk any longer.

The one on the right bloomed a few years back, and though it kept growing forward from there, it hasn't bloomed since. The other side of the fork also died off, and it's now only growing in one direction again.

Last but most certainly not least we have THIS beast. This one has bloomed the last two or three years in a row. I honestly can't tell if the guy at the bottom right is part of the same rhizome or another one I planted too close that got subsumed by this monster, because it took ten minutes to get most of the clay off and there was still more. I'll need to actually rinse it off with the hose to really see if it's all one plant or two.

But I'm 95% sure that this guy is going to bloom again next year because of those nubs down along the bottom. They were below the soil, and they're too thick to be new roots, so I'm guessing that's what future growth looks like. Honestly, this guy should probably be divided, but I also don't want to ruin the chance of it blooming next year, so I'm going to put him back in the dirt as is and maybe divide next year after blooming season.

Anyway, irises are my favorite, and I think it's intriguing how they work. I'm hoping that we can get the soil a bit more balanced and that they'll do better after replanting them, because even though I just dug up 44, we only had 4 or 5 bloom this year. They aren't thriving in the soil as-is, because for as long as they've been established we should have had more blooming than that. It was still the best year since dividing them, though.

I've brought a bunch of them over to my apartment and I'm going to try them out in containers, mostly the dwarf varieties I had. ONE of the dwarfs bloomed this year and it was gorgeous, but I'm hoping the rest will do better in new soil with some extra attention.
