ways to say "only", "just" in Japanese

When I started learning Japanese, I quickly discovered that “only” translates to だけ (dake). Soon after, I learned about しか (shika) and then ばかり (bakari). This led me to wonder how many ways there are to express the idea of "only" or "just" in the Japanese language. I began exploring the fascinating world of adverbs that convey limitation or exclusivity, each with its own specific nuance.

Here are some of the terms I’ve discovered (which I may continue to expand upon):

だけ (dake): Strongly emphasizes exclusivity, meaning that nothing else is included or considered. Example: 水だけください。 (Please give me only water.)

しか (shika) (used with a negative verb): Often conveys a sense of disappointment or limitation, implying that there’s nothing but the mentioned item, often with a sense of restriction. Example: 私は日本語しか話せません。 (I can only speak Japanese.)

ばかり (bakari): Suggests the dominance or prevalence of something, often with a sense of excess or monotony and a negative nuance. It does not imply strict exclusivity. Example: お菓子ばかり��べている。 (I’m only eating snacks.)

ばかし (bakashi): A casual variant of ばかり, used mostly in spoken language. It conveys a similar meaning but carries a more informal tone. Example: 遊んでばっかしいる。 (He’s only playing.)

のみ (nomi): Used in formal or written contexts, conveying exclusivity. It can sound elegant and refined. Example: 本日のみ有効です。 (Valid only today.)

ばかりか (bakari ka): This expression expands the meaning by introducing additional information, indicating more than just "only." Example: 彼は優しいばかりか、面白いです。 (He is not only kind but also funny.)

だけしか (dake shika) (used with a negative verb): This term combines だけ and しか, emphasizing strong exclusivity when used with negative constructions. Example: これだけしかない。 (There is only this.)

こそ (koso): Indicates that the highlighted item is particularly special or the best choice, often implying that nothing else can compare. Example: 今日こそ勉強する。 (Today, of all days, I will study.)

たった (tatta): Implies that an amount is minimal and often inadequate, highlighting a sense of limitation. Example: たった一人で旅行した。 (I traveled with just one person.)

わずか (wazuka): Emphasizes a minimal quantity or degree, often with a sense of surprise. Example: わずか10分で終わった。 (It only took 10 minutes.)

ほんの (honno): Indicates a small or trivial amount, often used to downplay something. Example: ほんの少しだけ食べた。 (I ate just a little bit.)

に限る (ni kagiru): This expression is used to convey that something is the best or only suitable choice for a situation. Example: 夏はアイスクリームに限る。 (Ice cream is the best for summer.)

だけでなく (dake de naku): Similar to ばかりか , this phrase is used to express that there’s more than just one thing happening. Example: 彼女は賢いだけでなく、優しいです。 (She is not only smart but also kind.)

単に (tan ni): Indicates simplicity; often used to clarify or explain something in a straightforward manner. Example: 単に冗談だよ。 (It’s just a joke.)

あくまで (akumade): Suggests that something is true only to a certain extent or in a specific context. Example: あくまで私の意見です。 (This is just my opinion.)

たかが (takaga): Often carries a dismissive connotation, suggesting that something is not very important. Example: たかが試験一回でどうなるものか。 (It’s just one exam; it won’t change much.)

The beauty of accidental marriage proposals

Yuuri very likely didn’t intend to propose to Viktor at the airport but his heart knew what it truly desired and twisted his words into a proposal—or rather something akin to a proposal that resulted in a spontaneous engagement.

Let’s unpack this!

Yuuri returns from the Rostelecom Cup with his mind full of things that he needs Viktor to know. While he doesn’t disclose any details, his inner monologue in front of Luzhniki Small Sports Arena gives us a good idea of the things he’s mulling over.

Having convinced himself that Viktor will abandon him after the Grand Prix Final, Yuuri is determined to fulfil the promise he made in his speech in ep. 5 because it’s his final chance to win gold. But even if he doesn’t win gold, there is one thing that he feels he needs to do after having seen his competitors and skating fans react to Viktor becoming a coach at two consecutive competitions.

Regardless of how much Yuuri has profited from Viktor’s support, he is very conscious about the fact that Viktor belongs to the ice. Or at least that is what his anxiety has convinced him of. In Yuuri’s brain, giving up his own career so that Viktor can resume his own is an act of love and the only possible solution for them to stay together.

We never learn about the conclusion of Yuuri’s contemplation, but the next scene’s subtext implies that breaking up with Viktor is not an option. Or, if it was an option, it was off the table once he was back in Viktor’s arms.

Since Yuuri has anxiety, it's safe to assume that he has been overthinking his talk with Viktor over and over during the flight, going through all kinds of scenarios based on Viktor's imagined reaction. After hours on the plane, his brain must have been on the verge of exploding, casting poor Yuuri into a state of total overwhelm. If you have anxiety, you can possibly relate.

However, the moment that he spots Viktor, Yuuri’s mind goes blank and instinct takes over as he runs into Viktor’s arms, and instead of whatever speech he has prepared, he just blurts out the following line:

僕も考えてた。引退まで 僕のこと—　お願いします！ "I've been thinking, too. Please take care of me until I retire!"

The English subs dilute Yuuri’s actual message. In Japanese, he doesn’t use the word coach here. “Please take care of me” is Japanese proposal language. The translators probably didn’t recognise this nuance and sadly, the it is still lost in the Blu-ray version.

However, Viktor correctly recognises the proposal in Yuuri’s words.

Given the information in the previous scene and the illogical ways anxious brains work, Yuuri intended to inform Viktor about his retirement plans and to voice his desire to make the most of the little time he thinks they have left. But that’s not what his heart wants. And since episode 5 we know what it desires:

初めて自分から繋ぎとめたいと思った人、それがヴィクトルです

A more accurate translation of that line is “The first person I want to tie myself to and never let go is Viktor” because 繋ぎとめたい means wanting to tie someone / something to you and never let it go (see this translation error masterpost).

Having made such a passionate declaration, there is no way that Yuuri would want his relationship with Viktor to end, and regardless of whether his anxiety his skyrocketing in the face of the GPF looming ahead, that desire has taken root in his heart and brain. However, his anxiety stops him from proposing properly and turns his addition “until I retire” into a gentle prodding to find out whether he and Viktor are on the same page.

And of course, they are.

And this is all Yuuri has wished for. He’s been anxious since he made up his mind in front of Luzhniki Small Sports Arena. Only when Viktor recognises the proposal and responds with a yes in the same fashion as Yuuri has phrased his request, he can relax.

To wrap this up

Absence nurtures desire, and in this case, the time apart has shown Yuuri and Viktor how much they want to be by each other’s side. Because he missed Viktor so desperately, Yuuri’s heart wins over his anxiety for once and enables him to tell Viktor his deepest desire. By recognising said desire, Viktor is able to accept the proposal and the two are now officially engaged. And that’s yet another beautiful aspect about this show.

Unfortunately, Viktor didn’t catch the part about the retirement, which will result in him thinking that Yuuri wants to break up when Yuuri announces his retirement plans in Barcelona. On the other hand, knowing that Viktor wants to stay by his side forever is a huge relief for Yuuri and allows him to enter the GPF without any emotional baggage.

Bonus: look at that cute tiny smile right between Viktor saying yes and the second hug.

Please tell me what Local Heroes is

So, local heroes are tokusatsu characters who appear in events to promote businesses, encourage activities like picking up trash or learning a local dialect, or to encourage tourism in a given area like a town or prefecture! (naturally not all local heroes fit into this, some are just people making their own toku heroes (a number of colleges have clubs that make these!), but they're grouped under the same umbrella)

A lot of them have fun and unique themes you won't see a lot for other toku since they're based around things specific to their area! Like Monbetu Garrier, who's based on an ice breaking ship:

*It doesn't translate cleanly but 想い秘めている means “to hide” or “to keep to oneself”, meant to reference how Shouto originally tried to hide his fire side, with the double meaning of “passionate fire” (as in his feelings/determination).

Utena Fansub Ep 15 release + Japanese vocab highlights

Last episode release I did a lot of textual analysis, because that was the most interesting part of the episode by far. This time, the episode was packed with interesting Japanese vocab, so I'll be focusing on that today!

ミルクセーキ作ったけど…　飲む？

I made some milk with honey. Want any?

If you’ve been following me since before the Utena fansub project, you’ll know that I sometimes post about what I call Trap Words in Japanese — loanwords that a typical English speaker might read and think “oh, thats a katakana-ised version of X” and be completely wrong about! For example, コンセント (konsento) is not “consent” but “power outlet/socket” (coming from a katakana conversion and then abbreviation of “concentric plug”). This is a mini trap words post!

I lied in this line. He didn’t make milk and honey. He made ミルクセーキ (mirukusēki). What is mirukusēki? A typical J→E dictionary would translate it as… Milkshake. But what a Japanese person imagines when they hear ミルクセーキ and what an English speaker imagines when they hear “milkshake” are COMPLETELY different.

I think of it like the word アニメ (anime). What does the Japanese word アニメ mean? It means “cartoon”. To a Japanese person, Tom and Jerry is アニメ. What does the English word “anime” mean? It means a specific style and genre of specifically Japanese animation. To an English speaker, Tom and Jerry is not anime. アニメ and “anime” are two different words with different meanings, despite sharing some history and sharing the same romanised form, because they are words in two different languages.

ミルクセーキ (mirukusēki) is a loanword from English which comes from “milkshake”, just like アニメ comes from “animation”. But a ミルクセーキ is not a milkshake. A ミルクセーキ usually contains eggs like an eggnog, it usually does not contain ice cream but instead crushed ice (thus being much less viscous), it’s seen as more of an after dinner nightcap type drink (similar to milk and honey!!) while the English “milkshake” is seen as a lunchtime drink usually accompanying fast food.

The Japanese wikipedia article for ミルクセーキ mentions that there are two types. One is “french style” which is the one Miki makes and the only thing that comes up if you put ミルクセーキ into google images. The other is “american style” and the reason it doesn’t come up on google images is because it’s much more often referred to as シェーキ (shēki) which when said aloud sounds much closer to “shake” than “sēki”. So the real translation for “milkshake” is シェーキ. What does that mean for ミルクセーキ ? Well, it’s its own thing! It’s a Japanese drink called mirukusēki that happens to be confusingly named after the English “milkshake”.

Anyway. I decided to translate this as “milk and honey” because that was the most appropriate term I could think of that they might drink in bed, presumably to help them sleep. Also the consistency and colour of the drink in the show looks kind of like milk and honey.

Miki: ちゅうちゅうってかわいいですね！ Utena: ちゅうちゅうじゃなくて、チュチュだよ。ちゅうちゅうじゃまるでねずみじゃないか？

Miki: Choo-Choo is so cute, isn't he? Utena: It’s not Choo-Choo, it’s Chuchu. Choo-Choo makes him sound like a train.

This line was also a lie! Utena actually says “mouse” not “train”. チューチュー (chūchū — note the long vowel ū) is the Japanese onomatopoeia for a mouse squeaking (which you may know from Pokemon — Pikachu’s name comes from the sound of a sparkle, pika, and the sound of a mouse, chū). Utena’s actually pointing out that Chuchu is not quite a mouse, not quite a monkey.

The option most translators would opt for in this situation would be to translate directly and keep the “mouse” bit. But since this translation project prioritises natural language, I chose to make the comparison work with an English onomatopoeia. I want the audience to think “huh that was weird, I guess it was hard to translate that line” as LITTLE as possible!

んんー、ああ。君にも迷惑かけたな。実は迷惑ついでにちょっと相談があるんだミッキー。

Oh, fine. Sorry for worrying you. By the way, I had something I wanted to talk to you about. (note lack of green)

A more literal translation would be:

Oh fine. I worried you, didn’t I? Speaking of taking up your time, I had something I wanted to talk to you about.

迷惑 (meiwaku) is the sticky part of this translation. The Japanese concept of 迷惑 is quite strange to most English speakers. Here are some examples of when you might experience 迷惑:

When someone’s late and you need to wait for them.

When you’re going somewhere and someone sees you and pulls you aside into a conversation.

When you go to use a public toilet and the seat has piss on it.

Here are some examples that aren’t really 迷惑, but it’s polite to say that they are:

When you get hurt - apologise for causing 迷惑 to people who worried about you.

When someone does something nice for you - apologising for causing 迷惑 implies that they spent a lot of time for your benefit and you appreciate that.

I guess a good definition of 迷惑 would be “when someone’s actions cause someone else to lose time, money, or cause them to become upset.” But we don’t have a word for that in English that sounds right in this kind of context! There’s no word that can mean both “worrying someone due to a having a fall” and “taking up their time on the way to class”. So although the teacher says “speaking of 迷惑”, I just had to skip that part because I couldn’t work it in. I couldn’t make the two concepts connected enough for it to sound natural.
