something shifted in marc's perception of his body last year i think. he realised that he is hot can show off his body in a way that makes him feel comfortable. also you are so right about the curls
EYE think hes had a healthy relationship to being a slut in camera for many years but he ALSO got a girlfriend who is very good at taking pics of him so he doesnt have to shamefully slink over to alex and ask him to take pics of his abs in order to put them all over instagram. like alex deadass said no i dont want to third wheel your photoshoot date im GOOD im gonna take a NAP in phillip island so i think its fair to say a lot of it could simply be gemma matching his freak
#he was undies out promoting gas jeans in 2015 hes okay with showin off his little bod...#but yeah i think hes always liked being well groomed and its something hes curated AND gemma is a willing collaborator in it#idnetical hot people love wins <3#asks#callie speaks#mgp

how the fuck do i get the bioessentialisy out of my brain. i read so much & follow so many trans women & yet it still crops up & it also causes issues for my own vague trans masc idnetity. i hate it. i don’t know how to kill my internal biases fully & get rid of initial thoughts & reactions
you don't get rid of the initial thoughts. or even the feelings. those things are not your enemy and they don't make you a bad person. All that matters is how you act. if you can notice yourself having those bio essentialist thoughts or feelings and then take a step back and measure whether they are fair, and do something about it when they're not, you've arrived. people think and feel fucked up things all the time. we all do.

Listen.
Listen. Because of the shape of arguments and tendencies of communication in human language- damnit, in the english language- "We need to put an end to the confiment of people within x y z social standards, and Support And Encourage people who are already not conforming to them", and "We gotta recognize the issue with certain values being enforced or given unfair power and clout is bad because of the unfairness and enforcement, not because of the values, otherwise we go back to opressive views of Correct and Incorrect behaviour/idnetity"- because of a quirk in the useful forms of sentence construction in english, both these kinds of statements are going to end up as "Let (x group) do/be (y)".
Thats it. Two seperate things sid in the same way, so you get mad if the contents of the sentence structure dont fit what hyou decided they were trying to say, its a you issue.
and again: logic is not magic. a good, correct structure doesnt mean it will make whatever variables you shove into x and y Morally Right. and thats true to BOTH meaning configurations, there are plenty of bullshit applications of both meanings being thrown around. which only makes people more reluctant to listen to Genuine Cases Of Other Serious And Correct Meaning if they feel slightly off.
#this is thee most me way to make this point im sure it can be made. more comprehensible. but not by me!#and its rattling in my brain so i want it out

A Year of Animation Day 10: ATLA S2E5-8
Date: January 10, 2025
Day: 10
Content Watched: Avatar: The Last Airbender, Book 2, Episodes 5-8
Year: 2005-2008
Rating: TV-Y7-FV
Run Time: 92 minutes
Aside form the flickering shadows in "Avatar Day," there a lot of smaller details I like about the animation here: the unfried dough hanging from Aang's mouth at the end of the same episode, Sokka's noodle arms when Ty Lee paralyzes them, the consistency of the front rows being empty at the earthbending competition, and the shift of animation when Zuko is tired and hot in the desert. The animators also pull a trick I love in fantasy movies, which is to add in a lens flare in "The Chase." But I do have to point out that there's a descrepency with the wheel of punishment. In one shot, the community service icon is next to the boiled in oil icon, while in the others, there's another icon between them.
My favorite animation in these episodes, however, is in "The Blind Bandit." Anytime Toph gets into a battle, it's a spectacle to watch, but I particularly like the way they depict her using earthebending to "see." I feel like the ripples make it immediately clear what she's doing, even before she describes it, and the slow motion helps emphasize that she is waiting and listening. I also like that they cut to black and white at the these moments because she doesn't use color to see. Also, Toph is notably barefoot in all her scenes because shoes hinder her sight, and she's the only character who reguarly has hair in her face. Because what does she care? She's blind.
Speaking of Toph being blind, she is another character we see with a physical disability, and this time part of the main cast! What I like about this is that like Teo, Toph's blindness is an important part of who she is, but it's not at all the focus. So much so, that at times, like the characters in the show, I forget she's blind. It's not about about her being blind and "overcoming" it. She just has a different way of interacting with the world, and everyone else needs to deal with it. I also like the fact that she "sees" through earthbending because it feels realistic. When I was in college, I had a friend who got to take part in a "blind leading the blind" activity in which seeing students were blindfolded and blind students showed them how they got around. Her partner taught her how to listen to the change in sound to identify where there were walls and empty spaces. This is similar to Daniel Kish, who famously uses echlocation and teaches others to do the same. Since sound is vibration, Toph's earthbending feels like an extension of this, especially given the way they animated it. Of course, I'm not blind, and I know a lot of shows have issues with disabilities being "fixed" by magic, so I'd love to hear takes on this from others.
My favorite episode of these four is "Zuko Alone." Obviously, I love Zuko, I am Zuko. And I like that this is basically Avatar's version of a western, complete with cow pigs, sheep pigs, and a pig chicken.
But what I like most about this episode is the inscription on the knife. "Never give up without a fight." Zuko embodies this. We see it in the falshbacks, especially when his mother tells him that what she loves about him is that he keeps trying and he works hard for what he gets. It's even in the recap, which includes the scene from the "The Siege of the North Part 2," where he compares his lucky sister to his own need to fight for everything he has. While traveling, he's willing to stand up to bullies to defend Lee, and even tries to show Lee kindness after he reveals his idnetity—he doesn't immediately give up on Lee's friendship. I think this is perfect for Zuko's arc, which is obviously about an inner moral struggle, and neither side of him is giving up easily. This may also be one of the reasons I relate to him? Because I kinda responded to someone telling me they hate modern animation by deciding to watch nothing but animation for a year. (And there's the anger. Yeah, a lot of it's the anger.)
I think "The Chase" is definitely the weakest episode of these four, but like Katara, I am glad to have another girl on the team, and I think this is the perfect time to talk about the representation of girls in Avatar. This is one of my favorite things about Avatar: there are a lot of girls, and they are all different.
I would say they're all developed, but personally, I think Azula, Mei and Ty Lee are more caricatures. Azula is the Villain, Mei is the Goth Girl, and Ty Lee is the Pretty Girl. They don't do much to pull them out of these tropes. Like… maybe Ty Lee has a little more going on because she's apparently the daughter of a nobleman who ran off to join the circus, but honestly, the first two or three times I didn't even catch that? I just thought her parents owned the circus. I know it gets mentioned twice in the episode, but with her doing cartwheels at a young age in the flashbacks here, I think it just fit my understanding of the character better. Also, we literally never meet her family. So obviously, the creators didn't think any of that important.
Regardless, none of them seem to have an internal conflict about what they do, or seem to grow and learn and change until the very end of the show. Now, you don't need every character in a show to be developed. And these three girls still make great villans, and I love how they each specialize in a different mastery which make them formiddable opponants. In fact, Ty Lee and Azula are so specialized that they have rare abilities—Ty Lee to remove bending and Azula to bend lightning. This is actually a pattern we will see among the female characters as the show goes on.
But now let's talk about the heroes. Both Katara and Toph are fully developed. They don't fit squarely into a single trope, they have more complex conflicts, and they learn and change and grow over the course of the show. And they are completely different characters.
Katara fits into a lot of the more traditional female roles—she mends clothes, she's the group's emotional anchor, and she heals. But she also fights for her right to fight—something which is traditionally masculine. At this point, she's a master bender and a force to be reckoned with. Katara also has a lot of empathy for people which, at times, could get her hurt. But she's not a total pushover either. She has a fiery temper which has also gotten her in trouble and will again. She's a nice amalgamation of the western Strong Female Character and a more traditional feminine role. Also, Katara is a water bender, which is often symbolically associated with emotions (think of Elemental, a movie I will not be watching this year because it's Disney). But while part of her arc is about developing emotional control, it's not the crying, but her fiery temper that she will have to contend with.
The showrunners have said that Toph was originally planned to be a boy, until producer Aaron Ehaz suggested otherwise. Well consider this my personal thank you because it adds so much to our show. First off, as I mentioned with "The Kyoshi Warriors," it's really common to have a power trio with one token girl. Also, I've heard that typical ratio of male to female characters in fantasy stories is 3:1 (which is why Tamora Pierce famously reversed this in her series—I had to give a shoutout. Hi @readingcircletemple fam!) So Toph not only gives the gaang a 1:1 ratio, but her contrast with Katara shows girls that they don't have to fit into a single mold because they're female, a mistake that a lot of other shows make, even if they have multiple female characters.
Toph is very different from Katara. She has shed nearly all over femininity—she makes jokes with the guys, doesn't care about her appearance (why would she?), and plays in the mud. These are things Katara doesn't do. She also has a lot less empathy for people than Katara. This is fitting of the symbolism, with her being an unmovable earthbender, but also with her backstory because she is used to being treated like she's helpless, so she's developed a tough attitude to deal with it. Like Katara, she will have to deal with emotions, but on the opposite end. Instead of learning to control them, she needs, as we see from her conversation with Iroh, to be more open to them.
Now, all of these things could also be true for a male character, but the fact that she is a girl, who contrasts with Katara (and does also induldge in her feminine side sometimes) is more meaningful because the show tells us that these are both valid versions of girlhood. This is especially true because both Toph and Katara are master benders, which proves that feminity and badassery are not mutually exclusive, as they often are in other shows (and even if they're not as developed, Azula, Mei, and Ty Lee, also each fall at different places on this spectrum, plus they're villains, which is why they're still a very important part of the female representation in this show.
Finally, I want to talk about Suki because even though she's not in this episode, she's part of this. And I know I talked about some of this already, but I feel like it's worth reiterating in this context. Suki, in my opinion, is not as well developed as Toph and Katara, but more developed than Azula, Mei, and Ty Lee. In "The Warriors of Kyoshi," she starts off antagonistic to Sokka, but agrees to train him, even though he's a boy. She doesn't even criticize him for being uncomfortable in uniform, but teaches him the significance of it instead, instilling him with the same pride she feels wearing it. Over the course of this episode, she grows to respect Sokka as much as he does her, which is what makes the kiss at the end so meaningful—Suki isn't just mooning over some boy, she's developed a meaningful relationship with him through their time spent together. It was so meaningful, in fact, that when the gaang returns to Kyoshi Island in "Avatar Day," they learn than Suki has left to join the war effort—because Sokka inspired her. Like our other girls, she is a strong warrior who has a specialization, but in her case, not only is she still feminine, femininity is an important part of her idenity as a warrior. They are one and the same.

mind map/ starting point
As I starting point, I made a mind map on things I am interested as a designer as well as my personal interests. I thought that combining the two would be a good way to come up with a brief that would help me develop my skills as a Visual Communicator whilst also keeping me engaged and self motivated if my project was based around a topic I have genuine interest in. I decided that I will make abeauty brand, so I will design brand elements and the brand identity as well as making magqzine spreads which would be advertising the brand within an external maagzine. This way I can develop my brand idnetity skill sas well as editorial, photpgraphy etc.
