Case Study #1 | Marketing Specialist
Case Study: What Candidates Get Wrong in Recruitment – A Data-Driven Analysis
Introduction
Recruiting for a Marketing Specialist role should, in theory, be straightforward—candidates showcase their past work, and the best portfolios rise to the top. Yet, during a recent recruitment process, more than half of applicants disqualified themselves by failing to follow a basic instruction: include a portfolio. This case study breaks down the numbers, common mistakes, and key takeaways for both candidates and recruiters.
The Recruitment Process
The hiring process was structured to efficiently identify qualified candidates while respecting the time of both applicants and the hiring team. The steps were:
Initial Application Screening – Candidates submitted their CV and portfolio.
Screening Call – Selected candidates had a short call to discuss their background.
Task Assignment – The strongest candidates completed a practical task.
Final Interview – The best-performing candidates met with the hiring manager.
Offer Stage – The final candidate was selected.
The Numbers & Common Candidate Mistakes
Out of 129 applicants, many were immediately disqualified due to basic oversights:
65 candidates (50%) did not include a portfolio, despite it being mentioned twice in the job ad, with a clear warning that applications without a portfolio would be rejected.
Common mistakes among those who did submit portfolios:
Lack of qualifications for the role.
Spelling and grammar mistakes in CVs and portfolios.
Unstructured portfolios—images displayed chaotically with no context.
Portfolios that did not meet aesthetic expectations (critical for a marketing role).
As a result, only 12 candidates (9%) made it to the screening call. From there:
2 candidates (1.5%) advanced to the task stage.
Both were invited for a final interview.
1 candidate received an offer.
Key Insights from the Process
Candidates don’t always read job ads.
A requirement as fundamental as a portfolio was ignored by half the applicants. Many candidates likely applied without reviewing the expectations.
A well-structured portfolio sets candidates apart.
The best portfolios weren’t just a collection of visuals—they were curated, structured, and told a story.
Strong candidates included personas and target group insights, demonstrating strategic thinking. Only two candidates did this, but it made a significant impact.
Aesthetics matter in marketing roles.
Some portfolios, while technically containing the right elements, lacked polish or coherence.
Candidates who used personal websites, Canva, or other structured platforms stood out positively.
The Outcome & Takeaways
Despite the high number of applications, the process resulted in a successful hire within 32 days—faster than anticipated. However, the sheer volume of unqualified or careless applications highlights key lessons:
For Candidates: Read job postings carefully. Ignoring a key requirement instantly removes you from consideration. Additionally, structure your portfolio clearly—don’t just upload visuals; provide context and show the thought process behind your work.
For Recruiters: Expect a significant portion of applicants to apply without reading instructions. Stronger filters and automation in the screening phase could help reduce time wasted on unqualified candidates.
Final Thoughts
This recruitment cycle reinforced the importance of attention to detail, structured portfolios, and strategic thinking. Candidates who treated their applications as a showcase of their marketing ability—rather than a rushed submission—stood out.
📢 Recruiters, what’s the most common mistake you see in applications? Candidates, have you ever realized too late that you missed a key requirement?

First of all, to all of you saying "is the Publisher's job to do it"... as a Publicist that worked as a Community Manager for some people... is not that easy. Well, at least not by going with my approach (so, trying to sound and talk like my Client) because you need to know you Client very, very, very well in order for the posts to feel like they were done by one person and not two (or a publicity team). But I'm a weirdo by doing so, so what do I know (As an audience member myself, I never liked the "robotic" or "impersonal" posts usually done by someone else but the person I'm following... it takes away any kind of humanity away and that's the main reason to follow anyone on social media: to have a sneek peak of their true self. But then again I'm weird)
Now... as Publicist (that rejects her own field) I'll say to stick to wherever your audience has a chance to grow... and I don't think that Twitter is the kind of place where your audience spends most of their time.
Like... yeah, you have 10k on Twitter and it is your biggest platform... but how many Likes/Retweets or even Tweets you get out of 10k? The main point is to have interaction. If only a limited (and consistent) number of people interacts/interacted with you on a web site instead of everyone that follows you... I don't see much of a point to devote so much effort on it. As many said, you can just link Twitter to whatever social you feel more inclined to and whenever you post something there, it'll automatically share it on Twitter. You won't even need to log in every time.
People tends to think that Advertising is just plaster your face all over the place... but actually is a lot more nuanced than that: it is carefully planned and targeted to who you want to go and buy your stuff (and this isn't always a product or service, but a person as well -like politicians do, you know? One of the reasons why I decided not to go on on this field-).
As a aspiring author myself, Advertising did taught me a lot of stuff that can help to get all cards on the table (and a few things that I do apply on my writing <- of course I'll plug in something I wrote. In my country is called "auto-bombo" -beating your own drum- AKA shameless promotion) and one of those things is The Brief.
The Brief is a document that could be compared to an extended CV/Resume. It is vital to start your Ad Campaing and I strongly suggest to have one for you as a person and one for your product -in this case your book-. That's how companies usually present themselves.
Its a secret document that goes over your life story (the relevant points on your career), your audience (hard data: age, gender, economical level + soft data: favourite authors, music, brands, TV shows and so on), your goals, your TOWS (threats, opportunities, weaknesses and strenghts) and other relevant information. I could write a lot about the brief but I'm trying to keep it short for time's sake.
Usually the Brief is what you'll show your Publicist so they get to know you better... because you know everything about yourself so you just ignore tons of very important information because you don't even considerate it. I'll always stick to a line that Mr. Sheffield told Fran in The Nanny "I know everything makes sense in there *pointing at her head* but I'm out here"
Still knowing your audience is THE THING™️ visualizing the people that will buy your book as actual people instead of a mindless mob walking on a bookstore is what is going to help your sales.
Lets say that this is like having a type... like for a romantic partner. You know how you want them to look like, what kind of hobbies they do, what movies they like... is the same thing... but for your book. Do they like suspense? Horror? Romance? Historical? What authors do they like? Are there conventions about that? What platforms do they use? What kind of social groups (virtual or not) do they attend? And then BAM! you'll know where you need to start showing up and talk about your book.
You can even get creative and taylor content to that kind of people to attract more views.
It doesn't sound like much, but it is a LOT of work so it can be discouraging when it doesn't pick up the pace at once. But this is not a race but a marathon... you just have to keep on going.
And you can ask me anything (public or private), I won't charge you. The main reason why I studied Advertising was because mom wanted me to go to College... I wanted to be a writer and I thought that Advertising would give me a boost but it didn't... so here I am stuck in a job I hate and too tired to write anything (but my imagination is unstoppable. In my mind I finished at least 2 novels 😝)
I do not want to be on twitter. I left months ago, but kept the profile for fear someone might impersonate me (which happened once before). But with the book launching, my publisher has asked me to be active again posting info. I’ve seen some authors keep it going by having a disclaimer about ‘news’ vs ‘live’ ( @neil-gaiman has this—see below. I’ve posted mine plus the pinned post, too if y’all have thoughts/edits). I am a little stuck by 1) not having more than 10k followers and 2) not having anyone dedicated to my media on my behalf. Every time I go there I feel icky. Any advice, authors of tumblr?

#advice#harleiquina's writing advice#let's use my Associates degree for something else but collect dust#do not fear Advertising... is funnier than Markerting and not a souless job#at least when its a fun product... I don't know what would've become of me if I had to spend 20 years doing ads for a toothpaste#another reason why I left my field

AI’s Capacity Revolution: What Lies Beyond the Horizon?

Which capacity advancements will AI bring about?
Working in storage is exciting right now. In the IT sector, a seismic shift is about to occur. It centers on how artificial intelligence (AI) will alter our expectations of what computers can accomplish for us and how we design and construct servers. Generative AI is generating a lot of excitement in both the public and industry.
When ChatGPT first appeared earlier this year, people’s expectations were sparked by the idea that a machine could comprehend questions we ask in natural language, have a discussion with us about any topic, and even compose poetry and rhymes like a person. Or the several AI models for picture production that, when given basic language inputs from the user, are capable of producing breathtaking visual masterpieces.
There is a significant need for higher bandwidth memory, or HBM, due to the quick development of AI. These days, HBM solutions are more in demand than gold. The need for a greater capacity memory footprint on the CPU is being driven by large language models (LLM) in order to handle progressively larger and more complicated models. Although the benefits of increased memory bandwidth and capacity are well acknowledged, storage’s contribution to the development of artificial intelligence is sometimes overlooked.
What part does storage play, and how important is it in AI workloads?
Two places will have a significant impact from storage. One is the fast local storage that serves as a cache for training data that is sent into the GPU’s HBM. A high-performance SSD is used due to the performance requirements. The storage of all training datasets in huge data lakes is another essential function of storage.
Nearby cache disk
Human-generated content from books, dictionaries, and the internet is used to teach LLMs. Large data blocks are read in order to prefetch the following batch of data into memory during the structured input/output pattern to the training data on the local cache drive. Therefore, in conventional LLMs, GPU computation is typically not hampered by the SSD’s speed. Other AI/ML models that place more strain on the local cache drive include computer vision and mixed mode LLM+CV. These models demand larger bandwidths.
Graph Neural Networks (GNN) are widely employed in fraud detection, network intrusion, and deep learning recommendation models (DLRM) for product suggestion. There are instances when the DLRM is called the biggest online income generating algorithm. GNN training models often access data in smaller block sizes and with greater randomness.
They have the potential to seriously impair the local cache SSD’s performance and cause costly GPUs to idle. In order to relieve this performance constraint, new SSD functionalities are needed. Working with industry experts, Micron is actively developing solutions. At SC23 in Denver, we will showcase some of this work and show how the GPU and SSD can work together to accelerate some I/O-intensive processing times by up to 100x.
AI repositories
Big-capacity SSDs will become the preferred storage medium for big data lakes. Larger capacity HDDs cost less ($/TB), but they also slow down (MB/s / TB). The ability of massive data lakes to power-efficiently source the kind of bandwidth (TB/s) required for large AI/ML GPU clusters will be seriously challenged by HDD sizes greater than 20TB.
In contrast, SSDs offer high performance and, when designed with specific uses in mind, may provide the necessary capacities at power (8x lower Watt/TB) and even lower electrical energy (10x lower kW-hr /TB) levels than HDD. The data center has more power now that more GPUs can be added. Currently, Micron is integrating its 32TB high-capacity data center SSD into many object stores and AI data lakes. In the future, capacities for 15-watt SSDs that can each provide several GB/s of bandwidth will increase to 250TB.
How may AI impact the market for NAND flash storage?
First, data is needed for every new AI/ML model to “learn” from during training. According to IDC estimates, the quantity of data created annually surpassed the amount of storage purchased annually beginning in 2005. This implies that certain data must become transient. The monetary value of the data can only be established by the user, as will when that cost of purchasing more space for preserving the material overcomes its worth.
Modern machines output hundreds of magnitude more data per day than humans can handle. Examples of these machines include cameras, sensors, IoT, jet engine diagnostics, packet routing information, swipes, and clicks. AI/ML algorithms may now benefit greatly from machine-generated data that people were previously unable or did not have the time to evaluate in order to extract important and valuable information. The need for storage should increase as AI and ML become more prevalent since they should make this data more valuable to keep.
AI data lakes house this training set. These data lakes have characteristics of higher-than-normal access density to allow a high mixing of preprocessing and intake while concurrently feeding an increasing number of GPUs per cluster.
Additionally, a lot of retraining is done on the data, which means that there is frequently little “cold” data. Large-capacity, power-efficient SSDs are a far better fit for that workload profile than conventional HDD-based object storage. These data lakes may be hundreds of petabytes in size and are used for computer vision applications like DLRM and autonomous driving. The capacity and quantity of these data lakes will increase, creating a significant growth potential for NAND flash SSDs.
NAND flash storage will be more and more necessary as AI models develop and increase in order to sustain their exponential performance development.

Why Excel Skills Testing is Essential for Business
Businesses rely on complex datasets to understand market trends, customer preferences, and operational efficiencies. The ability to manage, analyze, and visualize this data is crucial. While there are plenty of tools and software available to aid in data analytics, Microsoft Excel remains a favorite among professionals worldwide. But with its popularity also comes the need for businesses to ensure that their employees possess the requisite skills to use Excel effectively. Herein lies the significance of evaluating these abilities.
A Deep Dive into Excel's Significance
Microsoft Excel, since its introduction, has proven to be an invaluable tool for business. Its grid of rows and columns transforms into a canvas, where financial models, sales trackers, inventory lists, and even sophisticated dashboards come to life. Its vast array of functions, from simple arithmetic to complex data analysis tools like pivot tables and Power Query, makes Excel a Swiss Army knife of data management.
However, not everyone wielding Excel can unlock its full potential. This difference in proficiency can significantly impact the quality of work, especially in roles where data plays a central part.
The Need for Excel Skills Testing
Ensuring Consistency in Data Management: In the corporate world, massive datasets are commonplace, and consistency in their management and interpretation is paramount. A solitary oversight in an Excel function could ripple into significant strategic or financial discrepancies. By implementing Excel skills testing, corporations can instill confidence in the consistent and adept use of this tool.
Optimizing Efficiency and Productivity: A beginner in Excel may toil for hours on a task that an expert might breeze through in mere minutes, thanks to advanced functions and shortcuts. Mastery of Excel is synonymous with operational efficiency. By vetting these skills, organizations ensure that their organizational machinery functions at its optimal pace.
Tailoring Training Programs: Excel proficiency isn’t uniform across professionals. By conducting periodic assessments, companies can gauge the proficiency spectrum of their teams. This intelligence empowers them to craft personalized training agendas, ensuring that the training resonates with the unique needs of their workforce.
Enhancing Decision-Making: Modern-day business decisions lean heavily on data-driven insights. Often, these insights are painted vividly through Excel charts and models. By fostering advanced Excel skills, enterprises can be confident that these visual narratives are precise, insightful, and lucid.
Streamlining Recruitment: In today's competitive hiring landscape, especially in sectors like finance and analytics, prowess in Excel is a sought-after trait. By embedding Excel proficiency tests within hiring protocols, recruitment teams can gauge the true caliber of aspirants. This ensures alignment with organizational standards.
Boosting Employee Confidence: An employee well-versed in Excel is ready to tackle complex challenges, pitch innovative solutions, and actively enrich team endeavors. By measuring and subsequently amplifying their Excel capabilities, organizations can kindle this self-assurance, cultivating a dynamic and proactive team environment.
Mitigating Risks: Missteps in data interpretation can snowball into strategic miscalculations, financial misjudgments, or even regulatory violations. By evaluating and certifying Excel proficiencies, businesses can ensure data accuracy and operational integrity.
Conclusion
As the virtual realms of business expand and evolve, Excel skills are no longer just a checkbox on a CV; they are non-negotiable assets. It's a reflection of a firm's commitment to precision, efficiency, and premium standards in unraveling the tales that data tells.

Fire Control: Range Transmission

"A critical, and overlooked, aspect of fire control is the transmission of a firing solution or data from the data's source (rangefinder) or calculator (rangekeeper/fire control table/gunnery officer) to the guns themselves. At the end of the 1800s, transmitting firing data was as simple as yelling at the men working a particular gun. By the Battle of Tsushima in May 1905, the Japanese initially used runners to literally run messages from the gunnery officer to each respective battery. This was in place of the normal metal voice pipes, useless amidst the noise of battle, but this introduced delays, and coordinating the ship's fire was nearly impossible.
Better methods of transmitting gunnery information were required. The solution would come from electricity, send through a new device called a range transmitter. A set of inputs would be entered into the transmitter (at the source, or at the calculator), and electric pulses would emit through wiring to a receiver next to the guns themselves. The pulses activated magnets in sequence, the resulting magnetic field being used to turn a rotor by a set amount. The rotor displayed numbers for the gunners to read, and set their local sights accordingly. The order to fire could be transmitted similarly.
However, reading numbers off a meter at the guns during combat proved difficult and prone to misinterpretation. So, a similar technique was used to devise a system that demonstrated fire control data on a dial using a mechanical arm, like a clock. Gun crews could then move their weapons to match the settings on the dial. Once these matched visually, they could fire. This method of data transmission became a staple for much of the battleship era; popularly, it was known as follow-the-pointer. The US Sperry system from 1918 is shown installed in a training room at Sperry's facility in New York. Note the receivers show a turret and also have an arm pointed at a bearing mark. The turret would be rotated so that the dial's turret image was pointing the same direction as the arm, as on the indicator at right."

Ph.D. Applications for Anthropology/ Humanities/ Social Sciences (with examples from a success story)
Doing a Ph.D. is a really scary thought. Especially in humanities and social sciences. Especially in today’s job market.
Here I’m going to speak a little about my approach to Ph.D. applications, why I chose to do what I did, and how I put it all together including examples.
1. The Doubt
After coming out of my Master's degree, I already had a year of research set up, so I didn’t have to think about jobs like all of my friends I had made during that degree. I watched many of them struggle to find a job offer. Some were successful in attaining a job in Cultural Resource Management, a couple got smaller jobs in local museums, but for the most part it induced a lot of stress to have come out of a Master’s degree with no prospects.
How I imagined my future at that time: I knew I didn’t want to work in a museum, I knew I didn’t like Cultural Resource Management, I knew that after all this hard work I didn’t want to end up underpaid somewhere doing data entry.
A Ph.D. has always been something that I wanted. Ever since entering the Anthropology discipline, I imagined myself working towards becoming a Professor.
Here’s what I was told when I started to consider a Ph.D. Program:
“Don’t do it” (said by someone who already had her Ph.D.)
“I wish I had gone into something with more money, even after my Ph.D. its been difficult to find stable work”
“If you’re doing a Ph.D. in social sciences, ONLY go if you are fully funded, otherwise it is not worth the financial debt”
“Most people don’t get in their first try, that's why people apply to 10+ schools”
Coming up with a plan: After hearing this, I came up with a couple different options. Plan A: Apply to Ph.D. programs, if I get into one my first try and it's fully funded then I’ll do it. Plan B: Find a job in Environmental consulting, I could put my GIS experience to use, make some money, and then try again for a Ph.D. later down the road if I wanted. Plan C: Move to Japan and live out my weeb dreams (I’m part Japanese and have a lot of family there so this wasn’t as crazy as it sounds).
I was genuinely okay with any of these options. They all involve things that I enjoy, none of them are bad options, none of them would feel like “failure” if I ended up not getting into a program. I think this step is very important because it forces you to figure out what you care about, and allows you to be open to change if plan A doesn’t work out.
2. Choosing a Program to Apply to
I knew that I didn’t just want to apply anywhere. Getting a job outside of a PhD is already hard enough, and I wanted the school that I chose to reflect the work that I would put into it. As much as we want to think that name brands don’t matter when it comes to education, it sure as heck does help when it comes to opportunity and being selected amongst 100′s to 1000′s of applicants. Therefore, why not shoot for the stars? What’s the harm in trying. For this reason, I decided to only apply to schools that:
Had a prestigious name
Had a program that supported what I wanted to study and allowed for cross-disciplinary research (Digital Archaeology focused on SE Asia)
Had an advisor that had done research paralleled to mine (whether that included SE Asia or just Digital Archaeology in general).
I started research into programs with the Ivies and went down from there, also cross-comparing programs that had been ranked as best schools for studying Anthropology.
At the time of researching, the programs that stood out the most to me were:
Stanford (ideal because it was close-ish to home, fully funds their Phd students for 5 years, has opportunity for additional funding, had professor working with digital archaeology in Asia)
Harvard (had professor working in Digital Archaeology though it wasn’t in my preferred region, also has good funding, and its Harvard)
U Chicago (traditionally one of the top schools for Anthropology, however I had heard that a lot of this is because of “legacy” professors, and not much has come out of the department in recent years. Did not have someone specifically in my region of focus)
ASU (Also considered one of the top Anthropology schools, but funding is often fought for between students)
UC Berkeley (Had professors studying Asia, but it is a public school and also has limited guaranteed funding)
I sent e-mails to advisors that I thought I could support my research (this was probably around May, when applications are due Sep-Dec).
Hello Professor______,
My name is _______ and I am interested in applying to ________’s Doctoral program in Archaeology beginning in the fall of 2020. I would like to inquire whether you are accepting graduate students for this period, as my research interests align well with your research. I received my B.A. in __________ from _________ in 2017 and am currently _______. [Enter what you’re doing now, and any relevant experience that shows what you’re interested in researching]. [Enter something about their research, and why you’re interested in working with them/why you think you would work well with them]. I am eager to continue along this path and I feel as though your experience with _______could provide an interesting opportunity for future research. I would also be interested in working with [enter any other faculty that have similar interests, this shows that you’ve done some research into the program and the school in general] For your convenience, I have attached my CV here. If you have the time, I would appreciate the opportunity to speak with you further about the program and future research.
Best,
Full name
I also researched the financial aid provided to incoming Ph.D. students. After doing this, the only schools that sounded good to me were Stanford and Harvard.
Yeah, I know, only applying to Stanford and Harvard was a “big risk,” but this is how I thought about it:
I don’t want to commit to a Phd program for 5+ years if it's not fully funded, doesn’t have a big name, and isn’t going to guarantee opportunity after graduating.
I wanted an environment where I knew I could be happy under immense amounts of pressure (California by family, Boston by friends).
If I didn’t get in, I had back up options that honestly sounded really fun to me, so I was okay with pursuing those instead.
I didn’t want a Ph.D. just to have a Ph.D., I wanted a degree that would set me apart from others so that I could give myself the best chance for success afterward. I wanted one that, if pursued, could lead me to become a professor.
So I applied to 2 Schools.
I got scolded for this by many people... but whatever...I got in, so ha. Why spend money and time on an application for a school that you don’t really want to go to? :P
3. Applying to a Program
What an application looks like:
1. At least 3 recommendation letters:
Mine were:
Undergraduate Anthropology Advisor who has been helping me throughout the years with grant applications, etc. She knows me well, can speak well to my accomplishments. She is also a very well decorated anthropologist.
Undergraduate Professor of Geography who can speak to my GIS coursework. I’ve been updating him with my whereabouts and successes since graduating, so we have kept in touch regularly since taking his course.
My Master's dissertation advisor (he stressed me out submitting his letter 3 hours before the deadline >:| )
It’s good to have your recommendation letters come from people within the academic world. These people can write on your ability to achieve your research goals, your drive, etc. It’s okay to have maybe one letter from a workplace environment, however, it’s best to get as much street cred as you can from these letters, and this comes from Professors that know what they’re doing.
2. Curriculum Vitae (C.V.): This is important because it shows everything you’ve accomplished up to this point. This is how mine was set up:
Full Name, Current Position, Email, Phone Number
Education: University Name, City, Degree in ____
Publications: In Edited Volumes, Journal Articles, Manuscripts in Preparation
Conference and Workshop Participation: Papers, Presentations
Grants, Awards, and Fellowships:
Research Experience: Project Roles, Fieldwork
Teaching Experience
Additional Employment History
Leadership and Extracurriculars
Skills/Languages
A C.V. is a list of EVERYTHING you’ve done in your career, unlike a resume which is tailored to the specific job that you’re applying to. If you’d like a specific example, send me a DM.
3. Personal Statement: This is where you tell them why you want to be there and what makes you qualified. Why should they consider you?
Personal Statement Example
1st paragraph, introduce the program and your research interests: I am applying to _____ for admission to the Ph.D. program in Anthropology with a focus in Archaeology. My research interests are to explore [the consequences of ..... on the environment and human responses to environmental change] in [region of the world], and how these actions of the past can be visualized through the use of remote sensing and GIS applications to archaeology.
2nd paragraph, why you’re interested in what you’re doing: I learned the value of digital applications in archaeology through my undergraduate and master’s degree. [Digital archaeology] is appealing to me because [.........]. I first became interested in [example of why you’re interested in the topic/what inspires you]. After witnessing this, I began to seek out opportunities to partake in similar research.
3rd and 4th paragraph, what makes you qualified to pursue this degree?: I have many research experiences that qualify my pursuit of a Ph.D. dedicated to using digital methods in Anthropological research. [Talk about your undergrad experience, do some name-dropping of professors you’ve worked with], [why did these experiences inspire you to take the next step?], [how are you where you are now because of them?]
5th paragraph, what are you doing now?
6th paragraph, why this school in particular?: This is where you name drop the professor you are interested in working with, talk about how their research aligns well with yours by mentioning specific things that they’ve done such as theoretical approaches. What are you interested in doing that would fit well within this program? Are there any facilities on campus that you are particularly eager to work with? Show that you’ve done your research.
7th paragraph, what do you plan to do after you get your Ph.D. from this institution?: With goals of continuing archaeological research in ________ and expanding off the networks that I have established in _______, ________’s doctoral program in Anthropology is the ideal match to further my career as a Digital/Landscape Archaeologist. The Ph.D. in Anthropology at _______ allows for _________[reasons why you like the program]. Ultimately, my postgraduate goals are to remain in academia by continuing research and gaining a university faculty position. My foundation in archaeology gained in my undergraduate, graduate, and ______experiences have equipped me with a unique set of abilities to offer to ______’s Anthropology graduate program, and I look forward to the opportunity to exchange ideas with faculty and students alike.
Have your resume and statement looked over by as many eyes as you possibly can. It took me a good 6-10 revisions before settling on something that I liked.
4. Let the professors that you’ve been in contact with know
This puts you at the front of their minds when application review comes around. They’ll be like “oh yeah, this person messaged me about this.” I hadn’t spoken to the professors that I reached out to since those first few exchanges back in May, so sending this message was very valuable to remind them of my existence.
This email can be as simple as: Hi Professor ____, I hope you have been well since we last spoke. I am writing to inform you that I have submitted my application to _______. Since our last chat I’ve been [whatever you’re up to now that's relevant]. I look forward to hearing from _____ soon. Best, Me.
5. Productive Waiting
Yay, you’ve submitted! That was hard, but you made it through. Time to start diving into those other plans you’ve been thinking about. What will you do if you get into your top school? What will you do if you don’t get into your top, but you do get into your 2nd or 3rd choice? What if you don't get into any of them?
Remember that none of these options are bad, and in this world, you have to be open to change and welcome it. A Ph.D. is a really long commitment, and it doesn’t have to happen right away.
If you get in, accept only if:
It has the research you’re looking for
It has an advisor that’s supportive of what you’re doing
It’s transparent about what it offers its students
The current students are happy with the culture of the program and quality of life
The location is something you're comfortable with (for me having family nearby was a very important factor)
The money you are offered is enough to live the lifestyle you need to maintain good mental health
There is an opportunity for networking and expansion of your research outside of the university
As always, feel free to reach out with any questions at @aal.archaeology on Instagram or DM here! I’m happy to share my documents with you.
Happy writing!
-Lyss

Brand Strategy Consulting Services Agencies Battle
When Landor was tasked with its rebranding, their model strategist took an altogether solitary method. Interestingly, he did not take aviation as a supply of inspiration.
