chapter t h r e e
Laying in the bed that was closest to the window of the plane, the hum of the airplane’s engines were the only thing keeping her rooted in reality.
India lifted up and shifted in her first class seat that nobody other than Jey had insisted she fly to Florida in. Coming from L.A., it was no quick flight, especially with no stops so everyone aboard was forced to endure the 4-hour flight.
If he got her a first class flight, she didn’t even wanna know what the hotel room looked like. It’d probably be bigger than her apartment.
Not that she didn’t make money from doing social media, it’s just that she definitely couldn’t take a break from it for too long.
Her legs were stretched outward in front of her and since this was a morning flight, the sun rays were shining through the curved window so she closed it a bit since it was hot.
She still couldn’t believe that the last 24 hours were real. Nothing even happened yet. India never dealt with a man who was so forward, so direct about what he wanted.
Before she turned her phone on Airplane Mode while the plane was taking off, Jey informed her that she would also have a driver waiting for her so that she had free range of wherever she wanted or needed to go.
He even offered to get her tickets for the WWE show, but in all honesty, she wasn’t ready to see him that soon yet. She needed to just get to the hotel room and get all her nerves out before he came over.
India kept repeating the potential routine of what she was going to do once at the hotel, in order to feel some sense of control.
First, she had to check in. Then, take a steaming hot everything shower with the playlist she made as she was sitting inside the airport. Then, she had to get dressed, do her hair, and her makeup.
Good thing she brought 3 different options for dresses and heels since she was always so indecisive when it came to outfits.
And especially since she would be going out with Main Event Jey Uso.
India had asked him where he was going to take her but he just kept saying that it was a surprise, so she gave up asking. She knew it would be somewhere really nice, though.
But the most important note of all: do not fall in love with this man.
He wasn’t even forwardly really trying to charm her, he just was being himself, and yet that seemed even more dangerous. It made her let her guard down—clearly—as she was on a plane right now to go see him.
He literally handled everything.
The flight attendant was walking up and down the aisle, offering refreshments and snacks, but India politely declined.
She chewed on her bottom lip, opening her phone, and going to the last text messages that Jey sent to her before she boarded the flight.
Jey: The room got a balcony. I thought you might wanna wake up to the ocean.
Jey: I’ll pick you up after I get ready ok mama?
The act was so simple, but the thought behind it really was giving intent.
India sighed and laid her head back against the pillow, looking at the partially obscured view of the plane aisle. She glanced down at her freshly done nails—french tips with the ultra pink base, with a small red heart charm on her ring fingers. She had also went ahead and got her toes redone (they could’ve went another week, but given the circumstances, you know).
On the little GPS map screen that was on the partition next to the bed, she checked the time duration left of the flight.
1 hour.
India decided to take one last little nap and hoped that as she felt the plane touch the ground, she would wake up.
…
Sure enough, no one had to come and try to wake her and she tidied up the little bed as best she could before gathering her carry-on and all other little items she had with her.
As soon as she walked out of the loading bridge and into the airport, she made a B-line for the airport baggage conveyor, keeping an eye out for her baby pink luggage set that her mom gifted her last Christmas.
In leu of her waiting, she spotted some WWE fans who were decked out in merch.
Yeet merch.
India caught herself about to smile, but tried to wipe it off her face. One guy had on the glasses and the T-shirt and the other man who was with him had on a shirt that had some guy with SZ on it.
After what felt like years, she spotted her luggage and walked over to grab it before it got too far away from her. Dragging the suitcase behind her as she walked through the airport and out of the doors, she remembered that Jey said the car that would be waiting for her was a black Escalade.
Lucky for her, the driver was also holding a sign with her first name on it.
He was a kind-looking black guy, and as he noticed her eyes lingering on him, he called out her name as a question. “India? For Mr. Joshua?”
“Joshua?” India asked, confused.
The driver leaned a bit closer and lowered his voice. “Mr. Jey. I call him Joshua. Come on darling, I’ll take your bags.”
“Ohh, and okay thank you so much.” He reminded India of her father, very gentle mannerisms and kind eyes.
She opened the backseat car door and climbed in, settling down and waiting for the driver to take her to the destination.
As he got into the driver’s seat, she realized she didn’t get his name. “Excuse me, what’s your name, by the way?”
“Booker. It’s nice to meet you, India.” He sat his elbow on the armrest and offered his hand for a handshake.
“It’s nice to meet you as well!” India gently shook his much larger hand before sitting back into her seat and securing herself with the seatbelt as he took off.
Throughout the car ride, she and Booker had small conversation, with him informing her that he had been knowing Jey and his brother, Jimmy, for a long time.
India also asked him how long usually are the shows because she was planning to manage her get-ready time accordingly.
“They’re usually about 2 hours long, but you know the wrestlers be takin’ showers after and mingling for a bit. I don’t think Joshua would wanna waste any extra time tonight, though.”
India’s eyes widened as she looked out the window.
‘Oh my gosh, he knows. Bro.’ India was internally dramatically choking herself.
‘Nah nah, he probably just thinks I’m a friend or something…I hope.’
It was about a 15 minute drive before Booker slowed down in front of a Hilton hotel, and sure enough, it did have an ocean view. He got all of her bags and luggage for her, carrying them into the lobby.
“Well, thank you so much Mr. Booker.” India was reaching into her wallet to give him a tip, but he stopped her.
“No no, keep that. I’m just happy I got you here safe and sound.” He softly tapped the top of her hand that was still mid-reach into her purse.
“Aww. Well, thank you again.”
“Any time, darling. You have a good night now.” He waved as he walked out through the hotel’s entrance, leaving India to check in to her room.
After an easy process of checking in and getting her key card, she headed up in the elevator to the room. She definitely wasn’t expecting to walk in to one of the deluxe suites. Her jaw dropped in disbelief as she walked further in, checking out all the aspects.
There was a king-sized bedroom and a little living room with a couch, table, mini refrigerator, and TV. “Okay big baller, shot caller.”
She pulled her phone out of her hoodie front pocket to check the time.
4:05 p.m.
‘Damn, that time flew by fast.’
She thought back to her plan she laid out in her head on the plane.
Checked in to her room? Done.
Now she had to shower. She didn’t have to shave because she went and got waxed last minute from her wax girl. She was so grateful that she could squeeze her in on such short notice.
Rolling the suitcase in the bathroom, she collected all of her shower products and placed them on the floor of it before figuring out how to use the gauge.
…
Beyonce was blaring from India’s phone speaker as she danced with the music while applying her makeup. She didn’t wanna do a full face, just a light beat since her lashes were done.
Grabbing the setting spray and spritzing it all over her face, she fanned it dry with her hands and then walked to the dress she decided on wearing when she was fresh out of the shower.
It was a black and white cow print midi dress that she planned on pairing with some black mules.
Also, what type of person would she be if she hadn’t had Smackdown pulled up on her phone, Jey’s match playing in the background.
She was so fascinated with all the moves and acting, truly. He was in a match with some other guy, who India found his name was Gunther, a big ole dude with an accent that reminded her of Arnold Schwarzenegger.
It was getting closer and closer to her seeing Jey in person for the first time. That time kepy flying by incredibly fast as it was already 9 p.m. She didn’t start getting ready straight after her shower, wanting to just chill for an hour or two.
But now, she was fully dressed except for her heels, hair was done, and makeup was done. After she finished brushing her teeth for the second time today, her phone began ringing, and it was none other than Jey.
She swiped to the right of the screen to answer it.
“Hey mama. You all ready?” His voice was smooth and low.
“Hi. Uh yeah, I just finished.” She replied, walking back to the mini refrigerator to grab a cold water bottle.
“Okay.” He paused. “I can’t wait to see you pretty.”
She smiled, loving how flirty he was with her.
“Imma be up there to get you in like…ten, fifteen,” he added, his voice even lower. “You’ll like this lil’ restaurant.”
“Mhm, well let me be the judge of that.” She teasingly responded to his ever-confident statement, making him chuckle.
“Aight, see you in a lil’ bit, India.”
They said their goodbyes before hanging up and India could hardly contain her excitement.
‘I mean, it’s just a date…And then after…’ She shook her head, just trying to focus on enjoying the date he had planned for them.
She really wasn’t the shy type when it came to sex. As a matter of fact, she was far from it, but she already knew she would be shy around him. He just oozed sex appeal.
She could just picture it—his Cuban link chains dangling from his neck, his arms flexing with that beautiful ink flowing up and down his arms, chest, and neck in that damn white wife beater, a gorgeous contrast.
Just his voice alone over the phone could make her melt. Imagine that paired with his eyes lingering on each and every curve of her naked body as she was sprawled out underneath him.
‘Shit.’
Yea, she was gonna be shy.
‘Oh God, what if he talks me through i—I’m fucked.’ She silently thanked God that she never stopped taking her birth control pills after she and her ex broke up about 5 months ago. And it also didn’t help that she had just got off of her period and now she was extra extra horny.
India hadn’t realized how quickly those 10-15 minutes had gone by until she was interrupted by a knock on the hotel room door, making her head snap to it.
Doing a little run over to it, she smoothed her hair down, quickly slipped her feet into the heels, and looked through the peephole to see that it was him.
She silently mouthed, “Oh my fuuuck!” and finally opened the door, putting a soft smile on her face to keep her composure.
But as soon as her eyes met his tall figure, she might as well would have been a puddle of water on the side of the street and her knees damn near buckled.
It was a 6’2” piece of meat. His broad shoulders behind a fitted all black suit that hugged his arms like it was a second skin. This was accentuated by the Cuban link chain that rested under his black collar, against his chest. She also noticed the gold bracelet he had on his wrist.
Black slacks that hugged his thick, muscular thighs and she pictured the tattoos that he had underneath the pants. He could take her right then and there, to be honest.
She had to grip the edge of the door that she was still holding onto to literally not fall.
“Damn…” His voice broke through the tension that was present in the air between them as he took off his black shades. His eyes bore right into hers, taking in every inch of her beauty that he thought was perfect. “You tryna get me in trouble, huh?”
India laughed, tucking her hair behind her ear as she looked down at her feet for a second. “Oh this old thing?” She waved him off.
“Mhm.” He hummed, still taking in her curvy figure in that dress with his head tilted and a smirk plastered on his face.
“Aye, you just gon’ stand there and look this damn good and not gimme a hug?”
It was the way he said it—not in a “where my hug at?” way. In the most laid back and playful way with that bass in his voice. India giggled softly before stepping forward, placing her arms around the back of his neck as his arms wrapped around her middle, and she felt his warm hands gently rest on her back.
Then she got a whiff of his cologne. ‘This nigga is trying to kill me.’
The hug lingered a bit too long for two people who just met in person, but neither one minded it.
As they both pulled away from each other, India felt such an intense longing for him to kiss her, but told fat ma to calm down.
“Aight, c’mon mama. We gon’ eat good, trust me.” He grabbed her hand before she leaned back just enough to grab her black purse that had everything she needed inside of it.
…
India and Jey were now seated directly across one another in the dimly lit restaurant named Pearl and Horn. The restaurant housed a good amount of people, yet it wasn’t too crowded, and with the other customers dressed up as well.
She was still deciding on what she thought sounded good to eat and she glanced up at Jey, but he was already looking at her, one arm stretched over the back of the booth.
“Stop staring at me.” She was half kidding, half serious. He made her so nervous and giddy.
He grinned at her slight shyness. “I can’t help it, you just look too good.”
She softly laughed and rolled her eyes, hiding behind the menu and hardly even registering the different meals that they offered.
Suddenly, she saw his fingers slowly take the menu out of her hands and place it on top of his, resting on their table. “I know what you’ll like. They got too much damn food to pick from for a first timer.”
“Oop, well okay then…By the way, I watched your match earlier.”
Jey instantly smiled. “Oh yeah? What you think?” He motioned for her to answer him.
“I think that I could never do that and that you are very talented.” She breathed out a laugh. She was being completely serious; that stuff looked like it took a whole lot of stamina. More than just a regular athlete.
This made Jey laugh again. “Yeah it’s definitely a lot of work. I mean me and brother Jimmy been doin’ it for 15 years.”
India’s neck extended forward in slight shock. “15 years? Wow, so ya’ll are like the veterans.”
Jey nodded. “Yea, but like we still learn even from the newer people. It’s fun forreal if you’re dedicated.”
Hearing him talk about his passion for his career really made India see that he was more than just a dripped-out wrestler. She noticed that when he’s in the ring or doing an interview, or even talking to fans, he’s not a complete 180 of who he is outside of the ring.
He was just always being himself, she thought.
He seemed a little too good to be true, but she pushed that thought away.
It turns out, he did order a meal for her that she would like. She was now eating the bucatini pasta and Jey ordered for himself the ribeye steak meal.
Throughout the dinner, they fed their faces and also got to know each other a bit more—where they were born and raised, any siblings, how’s mom and dad, things like that.
The words just seemed to flow effortlessly, or maybe it was because India had 2 glasses of wine and was just a tiny bit tipsy.
She almost had asked the waiter for another one, but Jey stopped her. “Nah nah nah. Can we just get some water, uce? Thanks.”
“Oh you’re no fun.” India pouted, leaning forward to boop his nose with her finger, making him put his head down to laugh.
“Oh you- you’re like one of them happy drunks huh?” He smiled while he asked her, seeing her eyes were just the slightest bit low.
“Mhmm.” India stroked her hair with her fingers. “And I’m not drunk, just tipsy, Jey.” She scolded him before giggling.
“Yea, aight.” He held his hands up in mock surrender.
After making her drink all that water before he paid for their meal, they were now in the same black Escalade that had picked her up from the airport, but this time Jey was driving it.
Dinner was amazing, and paired with the good conversations they had, it was the best date she had been on. Even if they weren’t together.
He parked out in front of her hotel building and they both just sat in silence for a minute. His one hand was still on the wheel as he turned to look at her.
She wanted him to come back up to the room with her, but didn’t exactly know how to say it. “You good, mama?”
She nodded her head and then paused. “Yea, I’m good. I just…um.” Jey tilted his head, waiting for her to finish her thoughts.
It clicked what she was probably thinking and he gave her a low smile. “Look, I ain’t tryna rush you or nun’. But if you want me to come up with you…I will.”
India just stared at him for a minute. He was giving her the option, which she really liked. And thought it was very attractive.
“Damn, you really gon’ make me say it out loud Jey?”
“I like hearing you tell me what to do.” He countered back sexily.
She put her face in her hands for a second before looking back into his dreamy eyes and saying the word. “Yes, I want you to come up with me.”
She ain’t have to tell him twice. He cut off the engine, pushed open his door to step out, walked around to her side and opened her door like a gentleman.
“Aight mama. Let’s go.”

AI 171 crash probe widens: Ahmedabad airport ground staff quizzed, phones seized, sabotage angle not ruled out
A multi-agency investigation is underway at Ahmedabad's SVPI Airport following the Air India AI 171 crash, which killed 241. Ground handling agencies are under scrutiny, with staff questioned and phones seized. The probe, involving AAIB, Gujarat Police, AAI, DGCA, and the NTSB, seeks to determine the cause, including potential sabotage.
AHMEDABAD: Ground handling agencies at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport are under scrutiny by multiple investigation agencies as part of the ongoing probe into the crash of Air India flight AI 171 last week. The investigation, led by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), is being conducted with support from Gujarat Police, Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). A parallel probe has been initiated by the United States' National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), bringing international aviation experts to the crash site in Ahmedabad."All personnel involved in ground handling operations for the ill-fated flight were questioned, and their statements recorded," said a source familiar with the investigation. "Phones of key staff members who cleared the aircraft for take-off were seized for further examination."A comprehensive, multi-agency probe is underway to determine the cause of the crash. Investigators reportedly obtained CCTV footage from airport premises and are not ruling out the possibility of sabotage. On June 12, Air India Flight AI 171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed moments after take-off from SVPI Airport, killing 241 of the 242 on board.Investigating teams have since recovered the digital flight data recorder (DFDR) and the cockpit voice recorder (CVR). These are crucial pieces of evidence, which will help identify what led to the crash of AI 171. A CVR records cockpit sounds, including pilot conversations, alarms and sounds of engine and switches clicking.Read: Air India passengers stranded overnight at Delhi airport after flight encounters technical 'snag'The DFDR, on the other hand, logs hours of flight parameters such as speed, altitude, thrust, flap positions, autopilot inputs, acceleration, lift and landing gear movements. According to officials, the pilot issued a Mayday call shortly before the aircraft lost contact with Air Traffic Control (ATC) at SVPI airport.Officials from Boeing, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the NTSB, and UK-based aviation experts are now in Ahmedabad as part of the probe. The NTSB, in accordance with the international protocol, is investigating the crash independently due to the aircraft's American origin. This is the first time a Boeing 787 Dreamliner has crashed. The US agency, an independent federal body, is tasked with determining the causes of civil aviation accidents and recommending preventive measures. Union minister Murlidhar Mohol on Tuesday confirmed that a report from the central govt-appointed inquiry panel will be submitted within three months.(With inputs from agencies)

Round 2 - Arthropoda - Insecta

(Sources - 1, 2, 3, 4)
Our last athropods, the hexapod crustacean class Insecta, is one of the most successful groups of animal on earth. They are the most diverse, with over a million known species, comprising more than half of all eukaryote (animals, plants, fungi, etc) species, making them the “Default Animal.” They are comprised of three main groups: Archaeognatha (“Jumping Bristletails”), Zygentoma (“Silverfish” and “Firebrats”), and Pterygota (winged or secondarily wingless insects).
As hexapods, insects have a three-part body plan: head, thorax with 6 legs, and abdomen. They have compound eyes (some in addition to ocelli) and a pair of antennae. Many groups have 1-2 pairs of wings as adults. Insects have many means of perceiving the world: compound eyes and ocelli for seeing, tympanal organs for hearing, and receptors on the antennae and mouthparts for smelling. They live in almost every environment and occupy almost every niche. Many are aquatic, or have aquatic larvae. They are the first animals to have evolved flight. Some are solitary, some are social, some live in large, well-organized colonies. Some communicate with pheromones, some with sounds, some with bioluminescence. Some are venomous, some are poisonous. Most insects hatch from eggs, though some are birthed live. Some hatch as miniature adults, some go through a partial metamorphosis in which the larval stage looks vastly different from the adults, and some go through a complete metamorphosis in which a nearly immobile pupa is formed. Some insects provide maternal care. Some are carnivores, some herbivores, some omnivores, some parasites. Some spend most of their lives in their larval stage, and don’t even feed as adults. Due to the high diversity of insects, it would be impossible for me to summarize them further!
Fossil insects are known from the Paleozoic Era, during which they achieved large sizes, such as the giant dragonfly-like Meganeuropsis permiana, with an estimated wingspan of up to 710 millimetres (28 in), and a body length from head to tail of almost 430 millimetres (17 in).
Propaganda under the cut:
Insects are absolutely critical in all ecosystems, forming the base of the food chain, turning and aerating soil, controlling pests, encouraging or controlling the growth of plants, scavenging and recycling biological materials, and creating topsoil. Without insects, our planet would die.
There are many contenders for “largest insect.” The Giant Stick Insect (Phobaeticus serratipes) is the longest insect in the world, with specimens recorded at over 56 cm (22 inches), including their legs. The Giant Weta (Deinacrida heteracantha) is the heaviest, with a record of 2.5 ounces. Queen Alexandra’s Birdwing (Ornithoptera alexandrae) has the largest wingspan, which reaches up to 30 cm (1 foot) wide.
Meanwhile, the smallest known adult insect is a parasitic wasp, Dicopomorpha echmepterygis, commonly called “Fairyflies”. Males are wingless, blind and measure only 0.127 mm long.
Many insects are popular pets, including various species of mantis, cockroach, beetle, moth, and ant! Some are even domesticated, including silk moths and honeybees.
Many insects are eaten by humans, and farming insects for food is considered more sustainable than farming large chordates. These farmed arthropods are referred to as “minilivestock.”
Shellac is a resin secreted by the female Lac Bug (Kerria lacca) on trees in the forests of India and Thailand. It is used as a brush-on colorant, food glaze, natural primer, sanding sealant, tannin-blocker, odour-blocker, stain, and high-gloss varnish. It was once used in electrical applications as an insulator, and was used to make phonograph and gramophone records until it was replaced by vinyl.
One of the biggest ecosystem services insects provide for humans is pollination. Crops where pollinator insects are essential include brazil nuts, cocoa beans, and fruits including kiwi, melons, and pumpkins. Crops where pollinator insects provide 40-90% of pollination include avocados, nuts like cashews and almonds, and fruits like apples, apricots, blueberries, cherries, mangoes, peaches, plums, pears, and raspberries. In crops where pollinators are not essential they still increase production and yield. Important pollinators include bees, flies, wasps, butterflies, and moths.
Many insects are sacred to humans. In Ancient Egypt, scarab beetles were used in art, religious ceremonies, and funerary practices, and were represented by the god Khepri. Bees supposedly grew from the tears of the sun god Ra, spilled across the desert sand. The Kalahari Desert's San People tell of a legendary hero, Mantis, who asked a bee to guide him to find the purpose of life. When the bee became weary from their search, he left the mantis on a floating flower, and planted a seed within him before passing from his exhaustion. The first human was born from this seed. Dragonflies symbolize pure water in Navajo tradition. In an Ancient Greek hymn, Eos, the goddess of the dawn, requests of Zeus to let her lover Tithonus live forever as an immortal. Tithonus became immortal, but not ageless, and eventually became so small, old, and shriveled that he turned into the first cicada. Another hymn sings of the Thriae, a trinity of Aegean bee nymphs. Native Athenians wore golden grasshopper brooches to symbolize that they were of pure, Athenian lineage. In an Ancient Sumerian poem, a fly helps the goddess Inanna when her husband Dumuzid is being chased by galla demons. In Japanese culture, butterflies carry many meanings, from being the souls of humans to symbols of youth to guides into the afterlife. Ancient Romans also believed that butterflies were the souls of the dead. Some of the Nagas of Manipur claim ancestry from a butterfly. Many cultures use the butterfly as a symbol of rebirth. And the list goes on…

Among the points listed in the agreement were "cancelling all the recent decisions and procedures against banks by both sides and refraining in the future from any similar decisions or procedures", as well as "resuming Yemenia Airways’ flights between Sanaa and Jordan and increasing the number of flights to three daily flights, and operating flights to Cairo and India daily or as needed."[...]
Two other facets of Monday's agreement involved convening meetings "to address the administrative, technical, and financial challenges faced by" Yemenia, which has seen its operations severely reduced as a result of the ongoing conflict and a Saudi-backed land and air siege.
It also involves "initiating the convening of meetings to discuss all economic and humanitarian issues based on the roadmap”.
The government-controlled central bank in May banned transactions with six banks in the Houthi-held capital Sanaa for failing to abide by an order to relocate to Aden, which is under the control of the Saudi-backed government.
The Houthis said the move was a disguised attempt by the United States and Saudi Arabia to exert financial pressure on the Houthi banking system, which uses different bank notes with different exchange rates.
In response, they banned any dealings with 13 banks in Aden, preventing people in Houthi-held areas from getting remittances through them or withdrawing and depositing money.

I FOUND A BIRD I'M INTERESTED IN!!!
do you know bird facts for it???
great eared nightjar
GREAT EARED NIGHTJAR!!!
beautiful bird, they look like little dragons
great eared nightjars are found in southeast Asia and some parts of India, though they're very rare to see due to the loss of woodland habitats. they're also one of the largest nightjar species with a range of 31 to 41cm. they're nocturnal, making their eyes almost pitch black to allow them night vision and their calls are very distinctive (thought I can't describe it here, look it up)
they eat insects in the night, which make them great at controlling the population of insects around them. their wings and tail are rounded, shaped specifically for professional flight to navigate the night skies (god I love birds)
some of their distant relatives on other continents include the potoo's in South america the frogmouth in Oceania and the oil bird (objectively the cutest)

1942 05 04 Alone Above Baoshan - Roy Grinnell
the moment on May 4, 1942, that AVG Flight Leader Charlie Bond races off from the small airfield at Baoshan, at the controls of a Curtiss Tomahawk fighter to single handedly intercept a force of 50 Mitsubishi Ki-21 "Sally" twin engine bombers of the Imperial Japanese Army Air Forces, that were attacking the city of Baoshan. The Burma Road ran through the center of the small city, and at that moment the city was packed with thousands upon thousands of refugees who were desperately fleeing the fall of Burma and the advancing Japanese Army. Apparently the target of the Japanese bombers that day was the Burma Road itself, and denying its use to the Chinese Army, with the tragic result that many thousands of these refugees died under the rain of Japanese bombs and crumbling buildings. As the western flank of General Chennault's carefully built, and usually very effective early warning network had been put out of action by the fall of Burma, the small AVG detachment that Chennault had placed at Baoshan, was caught on the ground by the attack, and with Japanese bombs already falling towards their targets, only Charlie was able to get to his aircraft and get off the ground, and as Roy has captured in his painting, Charlie took to the air without properly securing his parachute harness, seat belts and flying helmet. After a long, climbing pursuit to the southwest, Charlie caught up with the tail-end element of the Japanese bombers and quickly shot down one of the Ki-21's and possibly damaged a second. Unfortunately, Charlie was unaware that the Japanese bombers were being escorted by a chutai (squadron) of Nakajima Ki-43 "Oscar" fighters, three of which broke off, and followed him back to Baoshan. As Charlie flew over the Baoshan airstrip, he executed a perfect "victory roll," but at the top of his rolling maneuver, the three unseen "Oscars" dropped in behind him, and proceeded to blast his Tomahawk out of the sky. Somehow, despite the tremendous damage to his aircraft, Charlie managed to bailout and land safely with only minor burns to his shoulders and the back of his neck. AVG Flight Leader Peter Wright, who along with AVG Flight Leader Ben Foshee were part of a truck convoy that was driving the last of the AVG's equipment and supplies out of Burma, and were driving through Paoshan at the time of the Japanese attack, shared with me during a Second World War Symposium co-sponsored by the Yunnan Municipal Government and the SAAHF in Kunming in 2004, that both he and Foshee saw that the Japanese bombers were being lead by a large, four engine aircraft, that they could not identify. Peter also mentioned that the four engine aircraft appeared to be painted silver With the Japanese occupation of Burma, the Imperial Navy moved a number of their huge, four engine Kawanishi H8K "Emily" flying boats to Burma to support its operations in the India Ocean, and photos from this time suggest that at least some of these H8K's were painted silver. So apparently the large aircraft that Peter and Ben Foshee observed leading the Ki-21's was an Imperial Navy H8K, that was being utilized as a navigation ship.*Peter was very fortunate to have survived the attack on Baoshan that day, as his friend and fellow "Flying Tiger," Ben Foshee was fatally wounded when Japanese bomb fragments slammed into the cap of the truck they were driving.

Good luck with your wedding planing! Hope everything goes well. Just curious, how much actual planning are you doing right now? Just securing the venue and approximate amount of guests? I would have been a little nervous about everything in your situation, ahah, like what if guests change their mind/the weather changes/something happens. But it all can happen independently on the actual date, my friend was securing the venue and etc like a month ahead and still had to reschedule, so it's best not to worry yourself. Take whatever time you need for it, I'm sure majority of us will simply be happy when you are ready to share whatever you want about your IF, ahah, we are here for the ride.
Ahh thank you so much! Seriously, your words mean a lot 🥹 Right now, we’re mostly focused on securing the venue and getting a rough idea of our guest count, which has already been a full time job in itself. We’re doing a destination wedding at Villa d’Este, so beyond just booking the venue, we also have to coordinate room blocks, figure out which flights we might need to cover, and handle transportation from the airport to the hotel and then to the venue itself.
Our families are spread out all over the world in Haiti, India, China, the U.S., and Canada, so we want to make the entire experience as smooth and stress-free as possible for them. My husband and I are both lucky to come from well-off families, so we’ve agreed that if we’re going to ask people to travel for us, we really want to pamper them in return, nice rooms, thoughtful welcome packages, private cars, the works.
And girl, you’re so right about the “what-ifs” too, guest list changes, weather surprises, or travel hiccups, those things can happen no matter how well you plan. It’s been a challenge balancing wanting to control everything perfectly and also remembering that the most important part is the people and the joy of it all.
And thank you for being so kind about the IF! I’ve been feeling a little guilty about stepping back for a bit, but hearing that people are still excited and just along for the ride really lifts a weight off my shoulders. I’ll be back soon, just gotta survive this whole thing first 😭

Wildfires engulfed vast swathes of South America last year, devastating ecosystems, closing schools and grounding flights. With its worst fire season on record, Bolivia was especially hard hit. “We felt powerless and angry to be unable to protect what is ours,” says Isabel Surubí Pesoa.
Large ranches and farms often use fire to clear land for crops or to graze cattle. Chronic drought, fuelled by the climate crisis and El Niño weather patterns, combined with weak environmental governance, made it easy for these fires to spread out of control, destroying forests and grasslands.
Industrial-scale land clearances without fire is also a major cause of deforestation, undermining the resilience of communities and ecosystems alike.
With insufficient local and national government support, many people are left to battle fires with little more than shovels and small water bottles. “As elected officials, we feel impotent,” says Verónica Surubí Pesoa, a city councillor in San Javier and Isabel’s sister.
Forest loss in Bolivia and across Latin America is part of a broader worldwide trend. New data released earlier this week by World Resources Institute’s Global Forest Watch found that global forest loss reached record highs in 2024, with almost twice as much tropical primary forest lost in 2024 as in the year before. That is equal to an area larger than Ireland.
Deforestation in the Amazon means warmer temperatures and decreased rainfall, with consequences for farmers and food production. When fire is involved – as it increasingly is – communities report issues from water pollution and smoke, which might increase lung cancer and susceptibility to infections, to disruption to education when schools are forced to close.
Historically heavy rainfall followed Bolivia’s drought and fires in 2024, flooding towns and destroying crops. In the Surubí community, in the country’s tropical dry forest region, they disrupted growing seasons and damaged roads and bridges, further complicating recovery efforts.
Fire – which is not a natural part of tropical ecosystems, as it is in much of Australia, for example – was the leading cause of the loss of tropical primary forest for the first time recorded. Forest loss in tropical regions is especially grave as these ecosystems are some of the world’s most biodiverse and serve as key carbon sinks.
The greenhouse gas emissions from tropical primary forests lost in 2024 alone exceeded the annual carbon emissions of India. Major fires swept Canada and Russia’s boreal forests as well, and overall tree cover loss reached all-time highs across the globe.
Peter Potapov, co-director of the University of Maryland’s GLAD Lab, which collected the data, says: “If this trend continues, it could permanently transform critical natural areas and unleash large amounts of carbon – intensifying climate change and fuelling even more extreme fires.”
Although the loss of vegetation occurs across the world, Latin America has witnessed much of this catastrophe with Brazil losing the most tropical primary forest of any country. The Amazon biome saw its worst decline since 2016, with primary forest loss more than doubling, driven by fires and agricultural expansion.
After a dip in 2023, Colombia’s primary forest loss rose by 50% in 2024, though fires were not the main driver. Joaquin Carrizosa, an adviser for World Resources Institute Colombia, says: “Most of the deforestation dynamics are associated with larger macro-criminal networks interconnected through the basin and … with other countries. This is not just a Colombian problem.”
Loss of primary forest surged elsewhere across Latin America. Fires were the biggest cause in Belize, Guyana, Guatemala and Mexico. Nicaragua lost nearly 5% of its primary forest in 2024 – the highest proportion of any country.
Bolivia’s primary forest loss increased by 200%, reaching 15,000 sq km (6,000 sq miles) in 2024. For the first time, it ranked second to Brazil in tropical primary forest loss and surpassed the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has more than twice its forest area.
This “signals that Bolivia has become a major driver of the global climate and ecological crisis,” says Stasiek Czaplicki Cabezas, a Bolivian environmental economist.
Czaplicki Cabezas says the expansion of industrial-scale farming and cattle ranching, weak enforcement and oversight of environmental regulations, and a legal and political framework that values land conversion over protecting forests drove the increase in Bolivia.
“What makes 2024 particularly severe is the convergence of these structural drivers with a deepening ecological and economic crisis,” he says.
Isabel Surubí Pesoa says of the latest data: “We’re the guardians of our territory, but this is out of our hands.”
Yet, the data showed some successes. In Bolivia’s southern Chaco region, Indigenous communities, public institutions, civil society organisations and volunteer firefighters banded together to protect the tract of land that spans national parks and Indigenous territories.
After a devastating 2019 fire season, they invested in early warning systems and enforced land-use policy better. It helped them successfully fight back the wall of flame that had enveloped nearby areas in 2024 and 2023.
Collaboration across sectors was fundamental, says Arnold, whose Fundación Nativa supported the effort. Just as crucial were the local monitors – mostly Indigenous Guaraní park rangers – who know the area and track conditions all year to enable a fast response.
In San Javier, Isabel and Verónica Surubí Pesoa are looking towards the next fire season. The organisation of Indigenous women Isabel leads is holding workshops to train women in fire prevention and management, and a municipal strategy is being drawn up.
They are also seeking support from conservation organisations to equip a local fire brigade, as the group has no boots, helmets or fire-resistant clothing.
“Last year, we often went to fight the fires in shoes or sandals, and the fire burned them quickly,” she says. “We’re fighting so we don’t have to suffer the fires again.”

In light of unfolding international events, I would like to weigh in on the situation and hopefully cut through the chaotic flurry of breaking news stories meant to keep everyone too overwhelmed to respond.
Firstly, I'd like to state the obvious misdirection from the United States President in order to take control of the narrative. These tactics, including declaring the protests in L.A. an insurrection, deploying American military personnel to American cities to fight American citizens, and now waging an unprompted war with Iran over fictional nuclear weapons, are all to distract you from the Big Beautiful Bill on its way to the U.S. Senate, which would establish a dictatorship and abolish their beloved democracy. It also serves to drown out the nationwide protests, plummeting approval rating, embarrassing 'military parade,' and the fact that he was involved with Jeffrey Epstein.
On an international scale, there is an active genocide in progress in Gaza and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as in-progress genocides planned for Armenia, India, and Lebanon.
My thoughts have continuously been with the people of Gaza, who have faced generations of cruel erasure at the hands of European settlers and suffered the consequences of colonial power in the region for decades. What I see happening in Palestine now, as it has been since the 1940s, is what happens when the rest of the world is complicit in the sadistic, hostile takeover of land from its native inhabitants for the sake of nationalist and imperialist agendas. The modern Israeli state is built on the ruins of Palestinian villages and the mass graves of the Palestinian people.
Many of you have probably been watching this evil unfold before your own eyes through social media, and feel unsure of how you can help the situation. Unfortunately, there is no easy or safe way to support Palestine. It is, by nature, a discouraged path to tread. You will be called anti-semitic and violent for protesting or speaking out. You will have to do the research and take the risk if you want to try and donate to Palestinians. And if you try to go there yourself to help, you will be detained, bombed, shot, or deported by the illegal Israeli occupation forces.
While I encourage as many people to do as much as possible, I know that not everyone has the privilege to be able to drop everything and campaign 24/7 or hop on the next flight to Israel. Many of you are just trying to survive, day by day, across the world. If nothing else, live, and make sure that everyone knows that the atrocities committed in Gaza will not be swept under the rug anymore.

I would now like to address the Mesopotamian polytheist community specifically. I would like to share with you a prayer that I have written that addresses the injustices of any state or entity and asserts the belief that injustice is an abomination to the Children of An. I will provide the Sumerian version with a Latinised transliteration, as well as an English translation below:

"The land that does not honour the gods shall be cursed, the land that does not feed its people shall be torn apart, the land that does not trade its gold, silver, barley, or tin shall become barren, the land that does not care for its poor shall crumble, the land that is ruled by a wicked king shall fall. Enlil shall not send his rain upon it, Utu shall not shine his light upon it during the day, An shall not watch over it at night, Enki shall not make its waters abundant, Inana shall not defend its borders, Ninurta shall not tend its fields, a foreign hand shall be upon it, and its palaces shall become ruins for wild dogs and vermin to dwell in."
For anyone concerned about the possible repercussions of anything that could be construed as a curse, I will leave the following proverb for consideration:
"To a curse that is uttered, a curse is not reciprocated. A curse which is reciprocated will be retaliated against with yet another curse."
