FFXIV Write 2023: Master Post & Round Up!
Tumblr media
Seven years of FFXIV Write in the bag! Whether this is your first year or your seventh, whether you wrote seven words or seven thousand, GOOD JOB, EVERYONE! And a thank you, as always, to @sea-wolf-coast-to-coast for continuing to host and provide prompts for us year after year.
As with last year, I will not be checking my word count or any other sort of stats; I ended up focusing on that in past years to my detriment, and the point of this challenge is to have fun! It's enough for me that I wrote every day. :D
BUT! October is here--and that it means it's time for my own personal challenge: FFXIV Edit! The heart of FFXIV Write is just to write, regardless of mistakes or roughness, but I do like to go back and revisit my ideas and see if my brain wants to put some more polish on my entries. So, throughout October, I will continue my tradition of posting each of my prompts to AO3 once a day and take the time to give them an edit or expansion or rewrite as I see fit.
Happy FFXIV Write, everyone! And now: THE MASTER POST!

Comics read this past week:
Marvel Comics:
Captain Marvel (1968) #13
This issue was published in February 1969. It was written by Gary Friedrich, penciled by Frank Springer, and inked by Vince Colletta. It was 20 pages.
I only skimmed issues #12 and #14 because I’ve read them before for my Black Widow and Iron Man readings, respectively.
The Incredible Hulk (1968) #284-291 and Annual #12
These issues were published across March 1983 to October 1983. All were written by Bill Mantlo, except that issue #286 was an adaptation of a short story and teleplay by Harlan Ellison.
Issues #284-286 and #289-291 were penciled by Sal Buscema, who also drew the layouts for issues #287-288, which were finished by Chic Stone and Jim Mooney, respectively. Issues #284 and #289 were inked by Joe Sinnott. Issue #285 was inked by Chic Stone. Issue #286 was inked by Bob Sharon. Issue #290 was inked by Carlos Garzón. And issue #291 was inked by Gerry Talaoc. All were 22 pages, except that issue #290 was 23 pages.
The Annual was drawn by Herb Trimpe, who drew the character from The Incredible Hulk (1968) #107-142 and #145-193, as well as in The Defenders (1972) #68-81 and the Hulk vs. Spider-Man story of Marvel Treasury Edition (1974) #25. This Annual story was 39 pages, and there was also a 1-page pin-up drawn by Brent Anderson.
Marvel (2020) #1-6
These issues were published across March 2020 to March 2021.
This series was an anthology of works by various creators about various characters, tied together with an overarching story about the Dr. Strange villain Nightmare making everyone on Earth fall asleep and controlling their dreams- the excuse for the various stories. This storyline is credited as that Alex Ross, Steve Darnell, and Kurt Busiek were all the storytellers, presumably meaning they plotted/conceptualized it together. Then the chapters were all written by Steve Darnell, and, across all these issues, the first 15 and 3/4 pages were painted by Alex Ross and the last 6 and 1/2 pages were drawn (including colored) by Mitch O’Connell in a purposefully different style.
Issue #1 contained an 11-page Spider-Man story, which was credited as by Frank Espinosa, presumably meaning that he plotted the story as well as drew (and colored) it, while the dialogue was written by Sajan Saini.
And a 14-page story about Rick Jones and Bruce Banner’s relationship, set during the early days of the Avengers, which was written by Kurt Busiek, drawn by Steve Rude, and colored by Steve Legge.
Issue #2 contained a 10-page X-Men story, set when Wolverine had only recently joined the team, which was written and drawn (including colored) by Dan Baereton.
A 10-page Thing (of the Fantastic Four) story with Spider-Man and Doctor Doom, which was written and drawn by Eric Powell, and colored by Eric Powell with Marissa Louise.
And an 8-page Vision story, which was written and drawn (including colored) by Paolo Rivera.
Issue #3 contained a 12-page Namor the Sub-Mariner story, which was written and drawn by Alan Weiss and colored by Lovern Kindzierski.
A 10-page story narrated by the Watcher about the life and interiority of a comic book artist, which was written and drawn (including colored) by Bill Sienkiewicz.
A 2-page Rocket Racoon story, which was written and drawn (including colored) by Scott Gustafson.
And a 4-page story about the Golden Age character Black Widow and the Red Skull, which was written and drawn (including colored) by Ryan Heshka.
Issue #4 contained a 13-page story about a dystopian timeline where the Earth was taken over by Deviants and humans were their mind-controlled slaves, with the superhero characters we know used as gladiators for entertainment. It was written and drawn (including colored) by Daniel Acuña.
A 10-page Dr. Droom story, which was an ode to the pre-superhero revival monster comics of the Silver Age. It was credited as that the storytellers were Hilary Barta and Doug Rice, and colored by Wesley Wong.
And a 7-page Thing (of the Fantastic Four) story, which was scripted by Alex Ross and drawn (including colored) by Sal Abbinanti.
Issue #5 contained a 12-page story about Wong, Dr. Strange’s helper, which was credited as that Gene Ha and Zander Cannon were the storytellers, and then Gene Ha drew (including colored) the story.
A 9-page Nick Fury story set just after Germany surrendered in WWII, which was written and drawn (including colored) by Adam Hughes.
And an 8-page story about the Wolverine fighting the Hulk, narrated with a conversation between Professor X and Scott Summers. It was written by Mark Waid and drawn (including colored) by Lucio Parrillo.
And issue #6 contained an 11-page Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. story, which was written and drawn (including colored) by Greg Smallwood.
And a 12-page black-and-white Silver Surfer story, with Jim Hammond also appearing in it, set at the end of the world, which was written and drawn by Lee Bermejo.
DC Comics:
the Wonder Woman story in Sensation Comics (1942) #5
This story was published in an issue cover dated May 1942. It was written by William Moulton Marston and drawn by Harry Peter. It was 13 pages.

'Intersections' Influences and Inspiration - Pt 2
Utku Yavasca
Utku Yavasca is a Portuguese comic artist that I found out about through my cousin, who happens to have met and befriended him on a trip to Portugal. The majority of Utku's work is shared through his Instagram page, where he regularly uploads short humorous comics about his life experiences. These comics usually contain 10 images per post, each being a different panel of the story. Utku is a very versatile artist, creating a variety of pieces that range from simplified and cartoony sketches to incredibly detailed pieces with darker, more mature themes, all of which tend to be created in his preferred medium of black ink.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was very beneficial that I was connected to Utku through my cousin, as this meant I was able to share a dialogue with him about his work and my final piece. Here are some screenshots of the conversation I had with him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Daniel Padure
Daniel Padure, aka Padure, is another artist who interestingly happens to be from Portugal. He works in the fields of illustration, painting, and street art, primarily sharing his art through Instagram. Padure's work can be recognised by his simplistic, bold illustration style, using minimal details and thick lines, often with his signature ink-dripping effect. What I like about Padure's work is that it's very visually consistent, using symmetry and precise proportions. He often uses the same character design in his pieces, which is very similar to the style of Keith Haring. I have been following Padure's work for a while, but what brought me back to it during my research for this project was his series of mirrored pieces, one of which can be seen below. This links to my idea of adding a flipped aspect to my graphic novel. I also feel that my approach to illustrating characters can often be very similar to Padure's, as I tend to draw with symmetry in mind as well as accurate proportions. I am also a fan of using simplified illustration styles.

Jordan Bolton
Jordan Bolton is a Manchester-based comic artist whom I discovered on the creative blog It's Nice That. Jordan creates beautifully moving short poetic stories that primarily focus on simple everyday experiences such as going to the movie theatre, looking out of the car window, and watching birds sitting in a tree. Jordan's comics, in a visual sense, are deceptively simple; however, they are always accompanied by a meaningful and often philosophical narrative. What I like about Jordan's work is his subtlety as well as the way that it subverts your expectations of a comic that traditionally has panels filled with dramatic and action-packed imagery, instead depicting more real-life settings and scenarios where the focus lies on introspection. In a way, I believe that the imagery Jordan uses is secondary to the underlying narrative, simply being used as a means to express it. Jordan's work links back to my research on Eckhart Tolle and The Slow Movement, as they all share similar themes of living in the moment and enjoying the little things in life.

The Dimensional Pocket Knife
Need a screwdriver? a pen? Maybe a crowbar to open that locked chest? Say no more, the Dimensional Pocket Knife has all you need and more!  ...Well, most of the time.
The Dimensional Pocket Knife starts with 5 charges, and at the end of each day restores 1D4 +1 charges (to a max of 5). Upon use, a player can try to pull a tool of their choice from the pocket knife. They must roll a WIS saving throw, against the DPK's DC of 13. On a successful roll, the player draws the tool they desire. On a failure, the player instead rolls a D100, and draws the corresponding tool from the below list. (NOTE: the DPK works using the rules of Hammerspace, and so can draw tools much bigger than itself from it’s body, e.g, a spear, a crowbar, etc. The DPK itself is the size of a standard pocket knife)
Downloadable version of the below table
1 - Whatever tool the player desires, but a mimic 2 - Ladle 3 - Lockpick 4 - Telescope 5 - Knife 6 - Fork 7 - Spoon 8 - Scissors 9 - Crowbar 10 - Toothbrush 11 - Hairbrush 12 - Ink Pen (ink not included) 13 - Ink Pen (ink included) 14 - Wrench 15 - Hammer 16 - Flute 17 - Handsaw 18 - Pliers 19 - Chisel 20 - Ruler 21 - Trowel 22 - Shovel 23 - Allen Key 24 - Screwdriver - (Head type is randomly chosen by DM) 25 - Wire Cutters 26 - Paintbrush 27 - Toothpick 28 - Hatchet 29 - Nail File 30 - Lighter 31 - Hand Drill 32 - Salt Shaker 33 - Pepper Shaker 34 - Umbrella 35 - Whip 36 - Tuning Fork 37 - Baton 38 - Tree Branch 39 - Spatula 40 - Frying Pan 41 - Can Opener 42 - Bottle Opener 43 - Key - (roll a d10, on a nat10, the key opens the door it is inserted into. On a nat1, the key becomes jammed, and must be forcefully removed from the DPK. In this event, the key cannot be rolled again (i.e, cannot be drawn from the DPK). On any other roll, the key fails to open the door.) 44 - Handfan 45 - Longsword 46 - Dagger 47 - Bell 48 - Grappling Hook 49 - Magnifying Glass 50 - Pickaxe 51 - Fishing Rod (Bait not included) 52 - Whistle 53 - Broom 54 - Mop 55 - Tankard 56 - Bubble Wand 57 - White Flag 58 - Compass 59 - Mirror 60 - Teapot Spout - (The spout pours a random liquid of the DMs choice) 61 - Razor 62 - Whisk 63 - Bouquet of Flowers 64 - Bouquet of Dead Flowers 65 - Walking Cane 66 - 25ft of Rope 67 - Leash and Collar 68 - Binoculars 69 - Tentacle - (Tentacle moves of it's own accord, and does not respond to commands. Day 13 of 31 of the Spooky Drawing Challenge for October 2021! I am drawing one everyday on stream at GaoLiOnTheRocks over on Twitch for the whole month! I didn't upload the last week's worth of drawings to other platforms though, because my stamp I use to sign them ran out of ink. I still haven't been able to get ink, but I've found a work-around!
Day 13 was a disaster and it shows in the final work. This one shows a yeti selling ice cream to someone!

*Why Do We Have Eyebrows* ?
Eyebrows keeps moisture out of our eyes and for making communication.
Ever notice how your eyebrow hairs grow outward, toward the sides of your face? That helps direct any moisture away from your eyes toward the side of your head. Eyebrows can also reduce the amount of light that gets into your eyes and keep dirt away from them, too. They help us express emotions and recognize each other. Eyebrows are an important part of human expression and communication. They allow us to show our emotions. One raised eyebrow expresses skepticism or interest. Two raised eyebrows can express surprise.
Beyond looks and emotions, eyebrows are also more generally important for facial recognition. In one older 2003 study scientists asked a group of people to identify the faces of fifty famous people, such as former U.S. president Richard Nixon and actress Winona Ryder. The scientists manipulated the photos so that they’d either have no eyes or no eyebrows. Subjects could still identify the famous faces 60 % of the time when they lacked eyes.
But when the faces lacked eyebrows, subjects could identify them just 46 % of the time. Scientists said this indicates that eyebrows are just as important as — or maybe more important than — eyes in allowing us to recognize faces.

*How does snow form?*
Snow forms when tiny ice crystals in clouds stick together to become snowflakes. If enough crystals stick together, they'll become heavy enough to fall to the ground. Snowflakes that descend through moist air that is slightly warmer than 0 °C will melt around the edges and stick together to produce big flakes. Snow is defined as *solid precipitation* Precipitation falls as snow when the air temperature is below 2 °C. It is a myth that it needs to be below zero to snow. In fact, in this country, the heaviest snowfalls tend to occur when the air temperature is between zero and 2 °C.

According to Indian philosophy, the chakras are considered the centres of spiritual power and energy within our bodies.
The word chakra literally means "wheel" in Sanskrit and symbolises the flow of energy in our body. The 7 chakras present in your body are actually energy centres and are known to regulate emotions.
Fundamentally, any spiritual path can be described as a journey from the base chakra, called the "Mooladhara," which is located at the base of the spine, to the "Sahasrar," which located at the top of the head. This journey of movement from the Mooladhara to Sahasrar is from one dimension to another. It may happen in many different ways, and various yogic practices can effect this movement.
*Muladhara* Chakra - Root Centre
*Svadhishthana* Chakra - Lower Abdominal Centre
*Manipura* Chakra - Navel Centre
*Anahata* Chakra - Heart Centre
*Vishuddhi* Chakra - Throat Centre
*Agya* Chakra - Eyebrow Centre
*Sahasrara* Chakra - Crown Centre
The vibration and energy flow of the Chakras influence our consciousness and also our physical health. Incorrect food, bad company and negative thoughts reduce or block the energy of the Chakras, which may lead to disorders of consciousness and illness of the body.

Budget office expects $2.3T deficit before Biden relief plan (AP) The Congressional Budget Office says the federal government is on track for a $2.3 trillion deficit this year. The deficit could soon be revised upward if President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package becomes law. The additional aid—coming after roughly $4 trillion was approved last year—would add more red ink once enacted, but isn’t included in Thursday’s CBO projections. Several decades of deficit spending has meant that the total federal debt held by the public is slightly larger than GDP. That figure is projected to rise to 107% of GDP by 2031 as spending on Medicare and Social Security increases.
Hard-hit restaurants feed COVID doctors, nurses to survive (AP) It was the week after Christmas and coronavirus case numbers and hospitalizations were soaring in Portland, Oregon. At Oregon Health & Science University, the state’s largest hospital, morale was low. Doctors and nurses caring for the most critically ill were burning out just when they were needed the most. Then, the food started coming: hot and delicious individually wrapped meals from some of the city’s trendiest restaurants, a buffet of cuisines from Chinese to Italian to Lebanese to Southern comfort food. For staffers who only took off their N95 masks once to eat during a 12-hour shift, the meals were more than just food—they were emotional sustenance. “It’s almost like having a weight lifted. It’s like getting a surprise dozen roses or something,” nurse Alice Clark said. “We’re so grateful.” But the meals, paid for by a wellness grant from the Oregon-based insurance fund SAIF, also served another purpose: They kept struggling restaurants afloat. As fall and then winter set in, eateries were folding under the strain of a monthslong indoor dining ban. The hospital orders—sometimes 150 or 160 meals at a time—were a financial lifeline. “It’s kept the doors open and a small workforce employed. It’s been the most heartfelt catering we’ve ever done,” said Kiauna Floyd, third-generation owner of Amalfi’s, a Portland institution that’s been serving up Italian cuisine for 62 years.
Trump defense wraps up case in three hours (AP) The defense attorneys for Donald Trump have wrapped up their presentation in the former president’s impeachment trial. Lawyers argued for three hours Friday that Trump didn’t incite the Jan. 6 rally crowd to riot at the U.S. Capitol and that his words were merely figures of speech. They say the case against Trump was a political witch hunt by Democrats and was not valid because he is no longer in office. Their truncated defense barely used the full time allotted, 16 hours over two days. Many senators minds appear already made up.
Trump Was Sicker Than Acknowledged With Covid-19 (NYT) President Donald J. Trump was sicker with Covid-19 in October than publicly acknowledged at the time, with extremely depressed blood oxygen levels at one point and a lung problem associated with pneumonia caused by the coronavirus, according to four people familiar with his condition. His prognosis became so worrisome before he was taken to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center that officials believed he would need to be put on a ventilator, two of the people familiar with his condition said. Mr. Trump’s blood oxygen level alone was cause for extreme concern, dipping into the 80s, according to the people familiar with his evaluation. The disease is considered severe when the blood oxygen level falls to the low 90s. The new revelations about Mr. Trump’s struggle with the virus underscore the limited and sometimes misleading nature of the information disclosed at the time about his condition.
Powering through appendicitis for perfect score on Chile’s national exam (Las Ultimas Noticias/Chile) The two-day, standardized exam that Chilean high school students must take to gain entry into university is grueling enough to make anyone a bit sick to their stomach. Antonia Schmohol, 18, was no exception, although in her case, the abdominal aches that began bothering her on the eve of the dreaded PTU, as the test is called, turned out to be more than just a case of nerves, the Chilean daily Las Ultimas Notícias reports. Despite her discomfort, the teenager—who hails from Chiguayante, a small city about 500 km south of Santiago—soldiered through the long, first day of the exam. That night, the pain only worsened, but still, Schmohol’s family kept insisting that she was probably just anxious. Having barely slept, the bleary-eyed young woman returned to the testing center the next day, Jan. 9, doubled over in pain at times, nonetheless completed the final portion of the test, the mathematics section. Relieved to finally have the PTU behind her, Schmohol knew at that point that something was seriously wrong in her stomach area, and soon after went to a nearby hospital, where she was diagnosed with appendicitis and operated on right away. The determined young Chilena has since made a full recovery. But this week—just over a month after her gut-wrenching ordeal—she received a call from the Education Ministry informing her that she was one of just 218 students nationwide to earn a perfect score on the PTU’s math section. Talk about grace under pressure.
Money moving out of London (Financial Times) In January, an average of €9.2 billion shares per day were traded in Amsterdam on the Euronext Amsterdam and CBOE Europe and Turquoise exchanges, up from just north of €2 billion worth of shares a day in December 2020. Also in January, trade volumes in London were €8.6 billion, an enormous €6.5 billion fall from December. Both Paris and Dublin also saw slight increases in their trade volumes, as seemingly overnight the financial capital of Europe crossed the English Channel on to the continent following the conclusion of the Brexit transition period.
The Pandemic Emptied Europe’s Cities. What Will Bring People Back? (NYT) When the coronavirus exploded across Europe in March, it realigned city life, shifting office workers to their homes, shuttering the hospitality sector and reshuffling life for millions. Unshackled from offices—many for the first time in their working lives—city dwellers throughout Europe began to leave, some to avoid the virus but others to escape cramped and pricey apartments and to connect more with the natural world. Now, nearly a year after the first lockdowns and with months more of restrictions looming, the easy assumption that most of the coronavirus exiles would naturally return once the virus was tamed is being questioned. In the reverse of the old song, the question now is not how you keep them down on the farm, but how you dissuade them from moving there for good. For city planners and urban design experts, that means beginning to grapple with problems that have long plagued many of these cities—housing affordability, safe transportation and access to green space—but that have grown more urgent because of the pandemic. More broadly, cities will have to address new desires about connecting with nature and “reconnecting with life,” said Philipp Rode, the executive director of LSE Cities, a research center at the London School of Economics.
Urban Arrivederci (Worldcrunch) An increasing number of young Italians are leaving cities and offices to rediscover a love for the countryside. The biggest farmer’s association in Italy reports a 14% rise in the number of young farmers over the last five year. The group said the rise was partly propelled by the coronavirus crisis. Many of these young farmers came from different professional backgrounds, looking to reconnect with nature and a more genuine lifestyle.
China and India pull back (Foreign Policy) China and India have begun pulling back troops along their disputed Himalayan border, months after a deadly clash between the two sides. On Thursday, Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said troops would be removed in a “phased, coordinated and verified manner,” while China’s defense ministry said it had begun a “synchronized and organized” disengagement. Military officials from both countries have been in de-escalation talks for months following a June 15 skirmish that left 20 Indian soldiers dead, along with an unknown number of Chinese.
Myanmar coup leader: ‘Join hands’ with army for democracy (AP) Myanmar’s coup leader used the country’s Union Day holiday on Friday to call on people to work with the military if they want democracy, a request likely to be met with derision by protesters who are pushing for the release from detention of their country’s elected leaders. “I would seriously urge the entire nation to join hands with the Tatmadaw for the successful realization of democracy,” Senior General Min Aung Hlaing said using the local term for the military. “Historical lessons have taught us that only national unity can ensure the non-disintegration of the Union and the perpetuation of sovereignty,” he added. Min Aung Hlaing’s Feb. 1 coup ousted the civilian government of Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi and prevented recently elected lawmakers from opening a new session of Parliament. It reversed nearly a decade of progress toward democracy following 50 years of military rule and has led to widespread protests in cities around the country. The rallies against the coup—now daily occurrences in Myanmar’s two largest cities, Yangon and Mandalay—have drawn people from all walks of life, despite an official ban on gatherings of more than five people.
Australian city Melbourne begins 3rd lockdown due to cluster (AP) Melbourne, Australia’s second-largest city, will begin its third lockdown on Friday due to a rapidly spreading COVID-19 cluster centered on hotel quarantine. The five-day lockdown will be enforced across Victoria state to prevent the virus spreading from the state capital, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said. Only international flights that were already in the air when the lockdown was announced will be allowed to land at Melbourne Airport. Schools and many businesses will be closed. Residents are ordered to stay at home except to exercise and for essential purposes. A population of 6.5 million will be locked down from 11:59 p.m. until the same time on Wednesday because of a contagious British variant of the virus first detected at a Melbourne Airport hotel that has infected 13 people.
Is Biden ghosting Bibi? (Washington Post) Since President Biden took office, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, or Bibi as he is known here, has been waiting for the traditional courtesy call from the Oval Office. After all, both Presidents Donald Trump and Barack Obama reached the prime minister within days of taking their oaths of office. But three weeks into his term, as Biden has worked deep into his Rolodex of world leaders without dialing Netanyahu’s Balfour Street office, much of Israel’s political class is ready to declare it a full-blown diplomatic snub.
Despite Biden’s push, a difficult road to peace in Yemen (AP) Buthaina al-Raimi was five years old when a Saudi airstrike destroyed her home in the Yemeni capital and killed her parents and all five of her siblings in August 2017. Ever since, she still breaks into tears for seemingly no reason. When planes fly overhead, she shouts to her uncle, “They’re going to hit us!” For her uncle, Khalid Mohammed Saleh, the U.S. decision last month to stop backing the Saudi coalition and push for an end to the war can do nothing to end her suffering. “It’s a wise decision, but it’s too late,” he said. It’s also too early, he said—too early to say whether President Joe Biden’s move will bring peace to Yemen. Reaching peace will be a difficult path. The warring parties have not held substantive negotiations since 2019. Fighting on the ground and coalition airstrikes continue. The Houthis’ grip on the north of the country has only grown stronger, and they have captured new territory from pro-government forces over the past year. Peter Salisbury, Yemen expert at the International Crisis Group, said Biden’s policy shift was “really welcome news” but “won’t automatically mean an end to the war.”
The pandemic has left a huge cache of dinosaur bones stuck in the Sahara (Washington Post) In secret patches of the south-central Sahara, blankets of sand hide 20 tons of dinosaur bones. There are flying reptiles. A creature that resembles an armored dog. Eleven species yet to be identified—all with long necks. They roamed the desert when it was still green, scientists concluded. This is one of Africa’s biggest fossil caches, a prehistoric graveyard that sparked dreams of a world-class exhibition in Niger. The rare discovery is vulnerable to looters and collapsing dunes. But excavation must wait as the nation confronts a second wave of the coronavirus on top of escalating Islamist insurgencies. Niger, about twice the size of France and two-thirds desert, has long boasted dinosaur riches. Countless bones poke through the sand. Paleontologists face a sweltering trek through bandit territory to reach what researchers call the continent’s most diverse mix of extinct giants.
