Ramblings and crazy theory time about GK chap 269 “Wilk’s way of doing things”
So we’re finally dealing with a new chapter in which we can say...
Tumblr media
...yeah, poor Wilk... as while yes, he was also responsible for his own downfall, what happened to him was surely terrible.
The first page is a quick summary of how the Ainu killed each over conveniently letting Wilk alive and not having him kill a single soul.
Tumblr media
For start we can see Wilk is the only one who’s apparently without a rifle (his right hand looks empty at least). We can also see that the group split basically in two, a part is pro-Wilk (or, at least, let’s-not-kill-Wilk) and the other is let’s-murder-him-right-now.
So, Irenka (pro-Wilk) places himself in front of Wilk. He has a rifle but doesn’t seem to aim to shoot anyone, just to defend Wilk and calm things down.
Oskeporo (kill-Wilk) aims at them with his rifle and is knocked out by Mesira (pro-Wilk).
Ratci (kill-Wilk), who’s a friend of Oskeporo, aims his rifle at them.
Irenka gets shoot and, same as Tamai did, as he dies accidentally shoot and seems to hit Oskeporo who, fires as well.
At this point things are a bit hazy.
Siromakur, who seemed to be in the let’s- not-kill-Wilk team before (he was shown at Wilk’s side), is shown bleeding from a hole in his chest. Was he the one hit by Oskeporo. The guy is supported or used as a human shield by Sukuta. We see a knife in the image but that one is actually Siromaku’s if the  draws on the handle has to be believed. It’s clear Siromakur isn’t the one holding it as we can see both his arms so they probably took it from him.
The next image shows us Ratci firing, the knife in his belly.
The very last image shows Oskeporo and Sukuta on the ground, likely dead.
Yeah, there’s plenty of holes in this page who’s just meant to drive home Wilk didn’t kill anyone, the other Ainu just started shooting, some by purpose, some by accident, some in self defence.
Possibly Siromakur didn’t kill anyone either, I’m not sure.
The image is not really clear on what exactly happened because Noda wants to keep it secret some details for a little longer.
Anyway we see Ratci crawling away and, interesting enough, two more bullets being shoot behind him. He also hears something being said but we don’t get what it was.
Tumblr media
The only Ainu of the rebels group that weren’t shown dying or being wounded to death was Mesira… but it’s hard to tell if he didn’t go shoot earlier since the images showed us so little.
We flash forward a little to Kikuta questioning a dying Ratci, asking him if Wilk was killed too and if others survived. Ratci dies before answering and the group then collects his body along with the heads of the other 6 Ainu, which were cut from their bodies. The total dead count is 7.
Usami wonders about who chopped their bodies since there should have been 7 Ainu and now their heads are all accounted for.
He tries to pick up Irenka’s head to see the head slip out of the skin which is something I expected. Usami figures out all the heads were skinned and the skins swapped around. He also notices the heads are missing eyes.
Tumblr media
All this doesn’t faze Tsurumi in the slightest. He correctly figures one of those skinned head should have belonged to Kimuspu, which would mean that there were 8 Ainu.
We’ve a flashback in which Kimuspu is shown wounded and holding a rifle which means the group had keep him alive and he had taken part to the battle. That’s probably why we weren’t shown the full battle in the intro page, to hid he was involved as well.
Tsurumi, holding the head covered with Wilk’s skin in a Hamlet’s fashion, then easily sums up Wilk’s plan.
The Ainu were 8 and Wilk used Kimuspu (which nobody knew was among them) to fake his own death.
Tumblr media
The eyes were then removed because Wilk’s eyes were distinctive.
He then seems to kiss Wilk’s skin… and I’m starting to think this might be where his affinity with Edogai was born.
We’re then shown the cover...
Tumblr media
...and it’s an image we should be very familiar with as we saw it in chap 1 and used again when Inkarmat wanted to push fowward her Kiro culprit theory in chap 116.
Tumblr media
The Ainu are on the ground and a man, Nopperabou, stand above them. Only this time we can see that the man standing above them is Wilk, not Kiro as Tsurumi told Inkarmat and, of course, despite surviving Wilk isn’t the one who did the killing.
Usami notices that people is coming, they’re the gold panners and the hunters who should have head the shoots during the night and are coming to check what happened.
Tsurumi split his forces, Usami is to go at the health resort facility at Noboribetsu (remember? The one in which Kikuta was) and call reinforcements while Kikuta remains there and secure the area. Tsurumi will instead pursue Wilk.
As Tsurumi leaves Usami notices Kikuta pensitive gaze. Kikuta is worried about Ariko. He wonders who will tell him the truth as he thinks Ariko will be upset to discover they were involved in his father’s death.
Usami says there’s no need to tell him as they merely told Ariko’s father about Wilk’s identity and it was the group of Ainu which tore itself apart.
Kikuta points out how their plan relied on sewing discord in the group...
Tumblr media
...which yes, it’s true, although Tsurumi clearly didn’t want them to murder each other BEFORE confessing where the gold was. He was hoping to reach them before they all would die, this was a miscalculation on his part.
But this little scene traces a difference between Usami and Kikuta.
While Usami doesn’t really care about how this will affect others (namely Ariko) and doesn’t feel responsible for the consequences of their actions, Kikuta does.
Usami lives in denial of his own sins, where Kikuta looks straight at them, which matches with how he’s a man who told Sugimoto in hell they’ll be rolling the red carpet for him. Kikuta knows what he’s doing is wrong, Usami doesn’t even stop to think if it is, or if it can have consequences on the others.
The following scene shows Sugimoto and Shiraishi meeting up with Ariko (evidently they managed not to get discover despite their car crash… no idea how since they should have made noise worth checking… unless Nikaidou also has left his guard post?).
We also gets a panel of Kikuta looking down under the rain. No idea what he’s watching but he’s sure sad and, I bet, he’s thinking at Ariko.
The fact that he and Ariko are on the same page yet divided by the panel with Sugimoto and Shiraishi is meaningful.
Tumblr media
There’s a tie between this two men… but there’s also something between them.
Meanwhile Tsurumi goes on in his narration.
He’s impressed by Wilk’s resolve to cut away his face. He figured Wilk, given the situation, expected to be labelled as the murderer and was worried of how this would affect Asirpa.
Thanks Tsurumi, after such a gruesome story, Asirpa really needed you to push on her the blame of her father’s actions. I get you want to manipulate her but this can also backfire because it proves Wilk’s actions were done out of love for her.
Anyway Tsurumi is just impressed by how Wilk not only came up with such plan but could also manage to carry it to execution quickly as cutting his own face off isn’t something a person would be able to do.
I agree and I would say it’s not just for the unbearable pain and the psychological trauma but also because it doesn’t seem that easy to do. I would expect a person to end up cutting a muscle or a blood vessel. But whatever, it’s a manga, and I’m not really an expert in skinned faces… and I like to remain as such, so let’s go on.
Tsurumi anyway thinks the plan was perfect if not for a detail, HE was the one chasing Wilk.
This isn’t said for a lack of modesty. Tsurumi just knew Wilk, he recognized his skinned face, he figured out his plan and, when he sees an Ainu with his face bandaged, he immediately recognizes him as Wilk due to the colour of his eyes. Another person, who had never met Wilk, might not have managed to do so.
Add to this that Wilk makes a mistake because he too recognizes Tsurumi (who back then looked a lot more like his younger self as he wasn’t disfigured yet), calling him ‘Hasegawa-san’ and giving away his identity.
Tumblr media
Tsurumi doesn’t tell us what happened after.
There’s clearly a timeskip and then we’re shown Wilk escaping on the lake, Tsurumi shooting at him and causing Wilk to end in the water and the boat to sink.
Among the things that sank there was Kimuspu’s face, which Wilk has taken away. Tsurumi runs, trying to reach Wilk but Wilk, after discharging his Ainu clothes, is faster at reaching a prison lodge where convicts were kept illegally.
Wilk asks who’s the boss of the guards, who’s of course nothing else but ‘slave-convict-trader’ Inudou, who was of course abusing of his power to illegally use prisoners in that area as well.
Wilk tell them about the 7 dead Ainu and claims to be the one who know the location where those Ainu hid the gold.
As the 7th division couldn’t get around with the people ruling the prison the result is that the guards carry Wilk to the prison in secret and Wilk becomes Nopperabout.
Asirpa asks Sofia about Kiroranke and Sofia explains once he freed himself Kiro began to search for Kimuspu as well and, while doing so, he heard the commotion and ended up on the crime scene while the 7th division was carrying away the bodies of the Ainu. He saw Wilk’s head being carried away as well and crumbled on his knees, crying and mourning Wilk.
Tumblr media
No matter how mad he was at Wilk for his own decision, back then Kiro was still his friend and cared for him. He even wondered if he would be able to understand him by starting his own family in Hokkaido.
However, once he was back from the Russo-Japanese war he hears the rumour that Kimuspu was among the Ainu corpses. An Ainu testified that due to him recognizing the tattoos on Kimuspu’s hands.
Due to this Kiro too starts piecing together things.
He believed the Ainu had let Kimuspu go once they gotten the location of the gold… but now that he knew they were 8 and only 7 bodies were found he believed one of them killed the other 7.
Hijikata coming to ask about Asirpa, the rumours about Nopperabou and the tattoo code… all lead Kiro to think that Wilk is Nopperabou… and, likely, that Wilk was the killer.
Kiro goes on saying despite having a family in Hokkaido he couldn’t arrive to the same conclusion as Wilk, he still believes that if the gold was used for the Far Eastern Federation this would protect the Hokkaido Ainu too.
Kiro thinks barricading themselves away was a pathetic way of thinking that would never allow them to win against Russia or Japan.
Tsurumi nods in agreement.
I’ll discuss my two cents in a while.
We’ve then a flashback in which Kiro gives the sign and Wilk is shoot and then we see Kiro’s expression.
Tumblr media
His eyes… are void of light but not black, grey as he thinks that Wilk was a wolf within the pack who has grown weak and that therefore Kiro followed the “way of the wolves” Wilk admired and did Wilk the kindness of killing him. As he says so we see a flashback of Kiro, Wilk and Sofia drinking together and being happy, Kiro with his arm around Wilk and trying to get him to drink something and Wilk holding Kiro’s wrist.
Tumblr media
Although Sofia is included so that they look a single unit, a single ‘body’, it’s clear the picture focuses more on Kiro and Wilk, in how they touch each other, in how their heads are close.
It’s not meant to be romantic, it’s meant to deliver how those two men were close, as close as two best friends could be in the past.
So okay, let’s go back.
I think I lost count of how many times I criticized Wilk’s plan, both the early one the ‘Far Eastern Federation’ and the new one the ‘Free Hokkaido only’ plan not because they’re wrong per se but because they’re horribly planned so this time I’ll spare you of them.
I’ll discuss a bit of the why Kiro, despite making a family in Hokkaido doesn’t just switches like Wilk.
The key is likely that Kiro, differently from Wilk, had no reason to switch.
Let’s go back a little. In the flashbacks located in Russia Wilk was presented like an idealist, his plan a beautiful utopia for which he was willing to bet his own life and the one of his teammates.
He has lost his village, likely his parents were already dead and he was on his own. Sure, he was friend with Kiro and later with Sofia but their attachment for them was, compared to his own goal, his own ideal, minor. He has devoted his life to that goal and that’s it.
And because no one is special in his eyes “All are equal” among the minorities.
That’s also what allows him to keep a cold, practical mind setting, that he doesn’t get deeply attached.
When he moved to Hokkaido he did a mistake.
Well, no, it’s not a real mistake, it’s just something that caused him to shift priorities.
He grew more attached to his wife and child than he was to his goal.
His priorities shifted and so he could sacrifice part of his goal for the benefit of his Hokkaido family, which he prioritized and, in sacrificing his goal, he accepted he could sacrifice all his Russian allies who had fought with him.
He wasn’t anymore ready to do everything he could to give ALL the minorities freedom.
He wanted to give freedom to his daughter’s minority, if the other minorities wanted to benefit of the freedom he planned to gain for the Hokkaido Ainu, they would have to come to compromise, give up their land, their customs. He would be still willing to help them but at his own conditions as they weren’t anymore part of his priorities.
It’s absolutely human… but it’s also a betrayal of the cause, of his ideal who used to held all the minorities as all EQUAL.
Now, “All are equal, but some are more equal than others.”
For Kiro instead the problem is different.
Kiro has built attachment for the Russian side, attachment that lies especially in Sofia but possibly he also had other companions he cared about. He couldn’t be as cold as Wilk, which means he was more emotionally involved in them.
In fact Kiro’s point as they argued was that “HOKKAIDO never had anything to do with them in the first place”, meaning deep down he prioritized the Russian minorities among whom he lived from childhood and fought together than Hokkaido in which he transferred only recently. He views Russia as his homeland, he views his people as the ones who live in Karafuto and in the Russian far east.
In a desperate attempt to understand Wilk he tries to build himself a home in Hokkaido… but it never worked. Contrary to what some part of the fandom thinks, Kiro NEVER sees himself as an Hokkaido Ainu, he sees his children as Hokkaido Ainu, he’s a Tartar with Karafuto blood from his grandmother side.
In short, marrying with an Ainu whom he loves and having children whom he loves helped him to INCLUDE Hokkaido in his priorities, not in demoting Russia from them.
Therefore, where Wilk started from an “All (minorities) are equal” and then moved to an “All (minorities) are equal, but some are more equal than others” Kiro did the opposite.
That’s why having an Hokkaido family doesn’t help him to embrace Wilk’s idea they should have prioritized Hokkaido but, if anything, pushes him to place Hokkaido and Russia on the same place.
He wants Sofia and Asirpa to join forces also because in this way they will become guarantors for both Russia and Hokkaido, they’ll protect the interests of both parties, of the countries he now both loves. And this too is a human view, same as Wilk’s was, even if it sits at the opposite extreme.
On a sidenote I wonder if the experience in which the Hokkaido Ainu slaughtered each other opened Wilk’s eyes and pushed him to realize that he’s an outsider, that he can’t hope he could just unite and lead them. But whatever, that’s just food for thoughts, it can be he escaped in that direction merely because it was the most convenient direction in which to escape for him and the speculations he was running in that way to bring the gold back to his Russian companions done by various cast members were just that, speculations.
Last but not least, Kiro’s reasoning as he killed Wilk.
We know that Kiro isn’t really that good at murdering people.
He can do it just fine in the heat of the battle or when he sees them as enemies (the Russian guards, the Russian soldiers) but not when he’s up close to them. He lacks Wilk’s coldness, which is what pushed him to hesitate when tossing the bomb to the emperor.
After all his weapon of choice, explosive, is a weapon that allows people to keep distance with their victims and it’s perfect for avoiding to get an empathic connection with them. Murdering people up close is a lot harder.
Although Inkarmat got in the way he didn’t mean to kill her and when she got stabbed by accident his first reaction was to try to help her, when Tanigaki let him know he was there to avenge Inkarmat he didn’t feel like finishing him off and he didn’t want Ogata to shoot Sugi.
Wilk though had betrayed them when he made clear he didn’t plan anymore to pursue their partisan group’s goal, circumstances paint him as the Ainu murderer and the fact he’s entrusting the gold to Hijikata, a Wajin, and Asirpa, Asirpa who has no idea about the other minorities, only worsen the picture.
Wilk, the NEW WILK who killed the OLD WILK and betrayed them, had to die.
It’s something Kiro likely knew Wilk had to die even before the Ainu incident, because partisans killed who betrayed them, yet he wasn’t ready to face, in fact, as soon as he believed Wilk died, he broke down and cried.
When it turned out Wilk instead survived, he could have been the one behind the Ainu murder and acted none the wiser by basically entrusting the gold to Hijikata, killing him for betrayal at that point was mandatory.
Yet the mental gimmick Kiro does to manage to condemn Wilk is interesting. Not only he has Ogata do the job but manages to persuade himself he’s doing Wilk a favour. The NEW WILK is a WEAK WILK and, according to Wilk’s ideas about ‘the way of the wolves’, the weak has to be killed.
Basically Kiro persuades himself he’s not hurting Wilk, he’s doing it an act of kindness according Wilk’s own mind setting (Kiro had no idea why Wilk was called as such but the volume version added a scene in which Wilk saw a lone wolf and talked with him and Hasegawa about ‘the way of the wolves’ so Kiro knew about it).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That’s probably why the image shows us a Kiro with no light in his eyes, a Kiro who’s blinding himself to the truth with a lie to cope with the guilt of killing his best friend otherwise he’ll probably break.
And this probably ties in with how, when their group was threatened by the Russian border guards, Kiro exposed himself to save the Orok and then called it ‘Kamuy Renkayne’, “thanks to the Gods”. What Kiro did is similar to what Sekiya was doing.
Before acting Kiro thought at how they murdered the Emperor, which is likely why they are held under fire but was also the moment in which Wilk, with an amazing coldness, grabbed the bomb and took care to correct Kiro’s mistake by placing the bomb in the royal coach. He likely gained Kiro’s loyalty with that act.
And by taking an amazing personal risk Kiro basically tested the will of the Gods to prove himself if he was right or wrong. If the Gods hadn’t spared him then his actions toward Wilk were wrong.
On a sidenote… it’s not a common occurrence for wolves to kill a weak wolf.
Normally they actually protect the weak in their pack by bringing them food and by defending them from larger predators because they’re like a big family, although they won’t hesitate to kill wolves that don’t belong to their pack, weak or not.
Wolves kill or drive out of the pack a silk or a weak or an old wolf only if they’re in conditions of great stress, for example if food is scarce.
Long story short, I’m more tempted to think the wolf Wilk saw as a child was killed not merely because he was weak but because he didn’t belong to the pack of wolves which found him.
Probably that wolf was kicked out by his own pack, trespassed into the area of another pack and was killed.
Anyway the irony is great and tragic.
We saw Wilk killing a member of his group due to ‘the way of the wolves’ mind setting and probably part of this mind setting is what made him cold when Hasegawa daughter and child were killed or when he left behind Sofia or now, that he decided only Hokkaido had to be saved… and yet this mind setting came back to bite him when his friend judged him through the same lens Wilk used to judge others.
His pack came back to him, only to get rid of him because he has grown weak in a perfect application of the contrappasso law.
Still, I’m sad for Asirpa. She didn’t deserve to see it.
But well, with this we likely have finished with the flashback for now… unless they’re going to include how the cat alliance formed, which I doubt as I expect Noda to save it for another time.
So, with the murder of the Ainu out of the way and all the tattooed convicts tracked down all that remains for the plot is to solve the code.
Oh well, we’ll see where this will lead us.

8 Proven Strategies for Passing the NDA Exam
Tumblr media
This article is for you if you want to join the National Defence Academy and become an officer in the Indian Defence Forces. These NDA Preparation Tips from an Expert will undoubtedly help you balance your time spent on regular studies and NDA exam preparation.
The addition of female candidates to the NDA exam has increased competition. Furthermore, because the NDA exam is administered by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), preparation must be meticulous. You must also remember the syllabus if you want to be considered for admission to the NDA and the Indian Naval Academy's Army, Navy, and Air Force wings.
The NDA syllabus includes topics such as mathematics and GAT (English and General Awareness), and the NDA syllabus levels are class 10th, 11th, and 12th. This article contains some of the best NDA Preparation Tips to help you with such factors.
1.Knowledge about the NDA Syllabus and Exam Pattern
Before beginning your NDA preparation, you should thoroughly understand the NDA syllabus and exam pattern. This may assist you in covering topics one by one and planning your schedule accordingly. You can also choose the DCG Defence Academy. It is one of the best NDA coaching classes in Pune. We provide the best NDA coaching in Pune under the guidance of retired defence officers and also provide best tested NDA study materials.
2.Plan your study time wisely.
A smart study plan is required for better preparation. A smart study plan entails effectively managing your time for the NDA syllabus. Your preparation schedule must be well-organised in order for you to receive high marks.
3.Ensure that your fundamentals are clear.
First, after reviewing your entire syllabus, make a list of chapters and topics. Then, highlight the topics that necessitate more attention and concentration. Begin by preparing the topics from the ground up. If your fundamentals are clear, you will be able to answer different types of questions. Clear up your fundamentals with the assistance and guidance of professional teachers.
4. Pay attention to the General Ability Test (English and General Awareness).
It is worth noting that it has more marks per question than the maths paper.
English
To pass the NDA exam, you must be fluent in English. Your English is not only tested in the written exam, but fluency in English will make a good impression on selectors during the SSB interview.
- Thoroughly prepare your vocabulary. Exam level questions can be used to practice and learn.
- Only practice grammar with exam-level questions.
- Reading comprehension requires only concentration and keen observation; you must select the appropriate facts and figures.
- Sentence Form Jumble Questions focus on only three parts of the sentence: the subject, the verb, and the verb's object.
- When answering Para Jumble Questions, focus only on three parts of the paragraph: the introductory sentence, mandatory pairs, and concluding sentence.
General Knowledge
General knowledge is part of the curriculum, so prepare thoroughly. This section can award you full marks or even zero. The questions put your general knowledge to the test. As a result, a simple review of classes IX-X should suffice.
Static GK
A proper strategy should be developed based on your areas of interest.
Examine previous years' question papers to get a feel for the types of questions that were asked.
Static GK questions cover a wide range of subjects. They include both science and social science subjects.
Science Subjects
- Unlike JEE or NEET, the NDA Exam does not assess subject knowledge.
- The questions put your general knowledge to the test. As a result, a simple review of classes 9th and 10th should suffice.
- Pay attention to facts rather than in-depth concepts.
Social Science Subjects
- Identical to Science Subjects. Concentrate on facts rather than in-depth concepts.
-Read our General Studies section for concept notes. This section covers almost every topic.
Keep up with current events.
All of the major events that have occurred in India or around the world in the last year have been critical. Strengthen your general knowledge by reading newspapers, magazines, journals, and books by well-known authors on current events, among other things.
5.Don't overemphasise maths.
The cut off for the maths paper is only 25%. As a result, your minimum goal should be 36 to 40 questions.
Most of you have maths subjects in your 11th and 12th grades, so your preparation should be adequate to score 45 to 50%.
-Mathematics questions are only worth 2.5 points each.
-Because there is negative marking for maths questions, your goal should be 50 to 55 questions.
-Judge your ability and set your target based on the fact that the maximum time limit is 150 minutes. A reasonable goal is to answer 50 to 55 questions in 150 minutes.
6.For the NDA test, choose your study materials wisely.
A large number of books should not be read while preparing for the NDA.
Maintaining a balance between your NDA preparation and Class 12th preparation is essential.
The most important factor in preparing for the NDA is studying the right book. Almost every aspect of the exam is thoroughly covered.
Take brief notes.
It is best to make short notes that are easily accessible so that you can revise them without devoting too much time.
Use expert-prepared notes that are both useful and important.
Read the NCERT study material concept notes.
7.Keep fit and healthy.
It is recommended that you stay fit and healthy by eating and drinking plenty of water.
Establish a regular sleeping schedule.
Aside from that, I prefer yoga or another form of exercise or meditation to relieve stress.
8.Revision
Revision is essential for good performance. This will help you remember the information.
Candidates should take brief notes and revise them on a regular basis.
Do not spend excessive time studying topics. This will cause you to forget everything you have previously learned. Revise all of the topics and subjects you have studied thoroughly in the final week before the exam. This will help you perform well in the exam.

FOM BLOG: GILLINGHAM 1-1 CHARLTON ATHLETIC
FOM BLOG: My Thoughts On Gillingham 1-1 Charlton Athletic
If this was any other season where Gillingham had not played a competitive league fixture the week before Gillingham’s Home League Match Against Charlton Athletic At Priestfield Stadium, then the enthusiasm for this fixture would be more eagerly anticipated, because Gillingham have had a rare Saturday Afternoon off and there would be more excitement and more news coverage for this fixture, and I would have thought that Gillingham V Charlton Athletic On A Saturday Afternoon would have got a expected 8,000 - 9,000 attendance inside Priestfield Stadium, and the atmosphere would be much louder for this league game say compared to Gillingham V Rochdale for example, However, all league and cup matches this season have been played behind closed doors, and we have to make do with watching Gillingham V Charlton Athletic On I Follow.
Gillingham V Charlton Athletic is also the first competitive fixture of The 2020 / 2021 Season where Championship, League One And League Two Clubs can make five substitutes in a game, And I had actually asked Steve Evans this question in The Q & A The Previous Sunday, and this was my question,,,, There's been a lot of talk from Klopp and Guardiola regarding increasing the number of substitutes from three to five, just so that football clubs can cope with the demands of a congested season. Do you think increasing the number of subs to five for this season is a good idea ? - Steve Evans was against five substitutes being implemented into the lower league’s prior to The Championship, League One and League Two all voting to increase the maximum number of substitutes from three to five, and it will be interesting to see how the five substitutes are going to be implemented for this home league game against Charlton Athletic.
As for my own thoughts on increasing the number of substitutes to five, I think with the congested league season, the number of injuries players are picking up with a condensed football season, It makes sense to increase the number of substitutes in what can only be described as exceptional circumstances that The 2020 / 2021 Season is being played in, However, Five Substitutes should not be implemented for The 2021 / 2022 Season, But I do think that there can be a sensible comprise to improve on three substitutes without seeing bigger clubs with more depth in there squad replacing five quality players with five quality players, One of those options is for teams to have five substitutes, But the fourth and fifth substitutes have to be players who have come through that football clubs academy, And another alternative is this, You can still make three substitutes as per usual, however, If your Goalkeeper is injured or sent off, then bringing on your substitute Goalkeeper doesn’t count towards your maximum three substitute limit, so therefore, your team can only make four substitutes if something unfortunate were to happen to your Goalkeeper.
Eventually, Gillingham’s Team News Appeared On Twitter, And Gillingham Lined Up As Follows………… Jack Bonham (GK), Ryan Jackson, Jack Tucker, Zech Medley, Connor Ogilvie, Robbie McKenzie, Scott Robertson, Kyle Dempsey, Jordan Graham, Dominic Samuel, Vadaine Oliver Substitutes Joe Walsh (GK), Christian Maghoma, Josh Eccles, Henry Woods, Matty Willock, Trae Coyle and John Akinde - It was great to see Scott Robertson back in the starting line up after his long spell on the sidelines because of injury, However, Loanee’s Declan Drysdale and Tom O’Connor were not in the match-day squad, Tom O’Connor had played for The Republic Of Ireland U21’s, so he was perhaps rested for The AFC Wimbledon Game, But Declan Drysdale not being named in the squad was certainly a surprise, And despite scoring against Arsenal’s U21’s In The Football League Trophy, Trae Coyle has to make do with his place among the substitutes bench.
I uploaded the following status update on to Twitter, whilst making sure I Follow was working properly,,,, Gillingham play against Charlton Athletic In League One This Afternoon, With Gillingham looking to extend there recent unbeaten run against A Charlton Athletic Side who are in exceptional form, Hopefully Gills can pick up all three points and start to move up The League One Table, Whilst BBC Radio Kent’s Twitter had uploaded a photo of the team-sheet, The 1PM Kick Off Inside Priestfield Stadium makes sense with no supporters inside the stadium, as we save on the financial costs of using the floodlights, It’s just a real shame that supporters of both Gillingham and Charlton Athletic could not be inside Priestfield Stadium, Because the attendance would be very high, and the atmosphere inside the ground would be superb as well.
Both teams were out on to the pitch ready for kick off, With Gillingham kicking towards The Brian Moore Stand In The First Half, And Charlton Athletic kicking towards The Rainham End, Hopefully, Gillingham can build on the wins against Crewe Alexandra and Woking, and although we lost against Arsenal’s U21’s On A Penalty Shoot-Out, The Draw meant that Gillingham progressed into the knock-out stages of The Football League Trophy, So it be great for Gillingham to build on recent results by winning against Charlton Athletic - COME ON THE GILLS!!!!!!!!!
FIRST HALF:
And right from the very start of the match, Charlton Athletic were looking to make the breakthrough as Marcus Maddison passes the ball backwards towards Darren Pratley, who takes a touch to control the ball before kicking the ball long down the right side of the pitch - Gillingham’s Left - And Omar Bogle wins the aerial challenge up against Connor Ogilvie and Zech Medley headers the ball forwards for Gillingham and Connor Ogilvie wins the second aerial challenge, But Albi Morgan knocks the ball inside centrally towards Andrew Shinnie on the edge of Gillingham’s Penalty Area, And Andrew Shinnie tries to pick out Conor Washington with a clipped pass over the top inside Gillingham’s Penalty Area, But Zech Medley manages to header the ball towards Ryan Jackson inside Gillingham’s Penalty Area, And Ryan Jackson has smashed the ball clear at the expense of conceding a throw on - Anywhere will do as far as Gillingham are concerned, And as far as how the back four are lining up for Gillingham, RB Ryan Jackson, RCB Jack Tucker, LCB Zech Medley And LB Connor Ogilvie - Zech Medley has played at Left Back For Gillingham recently, But he has been moved centrally alongside Jack Tucker in the heart of Gillingham’s Defence.
Two Minutes Into The Match, And Gillingham had the chance to open the scoring, Dominic Samuel manages to retain possession of the ball in Gillingham’s Half Of The Pitch before passing the ball back to Jack Bonham, who takes a touch to control the ball before kicking the ball out-wide down the right side of the pitch - Charlton Athletic’s Left - And Ryan Jackson wins the initial aerial challenge and Ben Watson wins the second aerial challenge up against Kyle Dempsey, But Ben Watson has inadvertently diverted the ball into Jordan Graham’s Path In Charlton Athletic’s Defensive Final Third, And Jordan Graham works his way down the line before cutting back on to his left foot, And Jordan Graham whips in a dangerous in-swinging cross, and Dominic Samuel’s first timed controlled volleyed effort towards goal goes across the face of goal and wide of the far right post - AND THAT WAS THE CHANCE FOR GILLINGHAM TO OPEN THE SCORING!!!!!!!
The next passage of play see’s Ryan Jackson kick a long ball down the line towards Vadaine Oliver right in the corner of The Brian Moore Stand / Medway Stand Side Of The Pitch, And Vadaine Oliver manages to keep the ball in play before being disposed by Darren Pratley, Because there are no supporters inside Priestfield Stadium, You can clearly hear Steve Evans appealing for a foul, But I don’t think Vadaine Oliver was fouled in my opinion and play continue’s, And In The Third Minute Of The Match, Charlton Athletic almost opened the scoring, Zech Medley passes the ball back towards Jack Bonham, And Jack Bonham’s first time clearance goes straight towards Andrew Shinnie, Who’s first time effort towards goal only just goes wide of the far left post and Andrew Shinnie almost managed to pick out the top left corner of the net with that effort on goal, and Jack Bonham can breath a huge sigh of relief, Because had Charlton Athletic opened the scoring with that effort on goal from Andrew Shinnie, then you would have to put that goal down to a goalkeeping error from Jack Bonham.
After that huge let off with Andrew Shinnie not scoring for Charlton Athletic, Gillingham were looking to cause Charlton Athletic a few problems defensively, Jack Bonham kicks the ball long down-field and Dominic Samuel chests the ball into Scott Robertson’s Path, And Scott Robertson passes the ball out-wide to Ryan Jackson, who gets the ball under control before passing the ball out-wide to Jordan Graham, And Jordan Graham plays a return pass through to Ryan Jackson through by the byline, And Ryan Jackson is being closely marked by Andrew Shinnie, And Ryan Jackson twist and turns and skips past Andrew Shinnie’s attempted challenge and Ryan Jackson is running through on goal by the byline inside Charlton Athletic’s Penalty Area, And Ryan Jackson  see’s his dangerous in-swinging cross headed partially clear and away from danger by Darren Pratley, And the loose ball runs through to Jordan Graham, And Jordan Graham uses his pace to take on Ian Maatsen, And Jordan Graham is forced out-wide by The Charlton Athletic Defender, And Jordan Graham still manages to fire in a low dangerous cross and Darren Pratley just about manages to get a crucial touch on to the ball to deflect the ball out-side of Charlton Athletic’s Penalty Area, and the visitor’s survive - With Charlton Athletic having to make do with a makeshift central defensive partnership of Chris Gunter and Darren Pratley, Gillingham can take advantage of no recognised natural centre back in the heart of Charlton Athletic’s Defence.
Seven Minutes Into The Match, And Gillingham win the first corner kick of the game as Jordan Graham’s Cross right in the far corner of The Brian Moore Stand / Medway Stand Side Of The Pitch is charged down by Ian Maatsen, and from the resulting corner kick, Gillingham almost opened the scoring, Scott Robertson whips in a dangerous in-swinging cross towards the near post and Connor Ogilvie can only header the ball over the crossbar from close range, however, Ben Amos came rushing off his goal-line to try and punch the ball clear and if Connor Ogilvie’s header was on target then Gillingham would have opened the scoring - And that was a golden goal-scoring opportunity for The Gills as well.
Nine Minutes Into The Match, And Kyle Dempsey is harshly penalised for a foul on Andrew Shinnie and Charlton Athletic have been awarded a very soft free kick in my opinion, And from here, Charlton Athletic were looking to open the scoring,  Andrew Shinnie clips in a dangerous in-swinging cross and Robbie McKenzie headers the ball partially clear and away from goal and Albi Morgan gets the ball under control before whipping in a dangerous in-swinging cross / shot and Albi Morgan’s dangerous in-swinging cross / shot flashes just wide of the far right post, Jack Bonham had dived at full stretch across his goal to make sure that Albi Morgan’s cross / shot doesn’t creep into the bottom right corner of the net, And Jack Tucker had done just about enough to prevent Omar Bogle from getting on the end of that cross and the ball has gone out of play for A Gillingham Goal-Kick.
And In The Twelfth Minute Of The Match, Charlton Athletic were awarded a free kick, And I have to say that free kick decision was poor because I thought Robbie McKenzie had done exceptionally well to intercept the ball from Marcus Maddison, And Referee Robert Lewis has awarded Charlton Athletic a free kick in a very promising position on the pitch, And from the resulting free kick, Charlton Athletic almost opened the scoring, Marcus Maddison has gone for goal from thirty yards out with a curling free kick which went up and under over the wall and Jack Bonham gets the faintest of touches on to the ball to tip the ball on to the top of the crossbar and the ball has gone out of play for A Charlton Athletic Corner Kick - BUT MARCUS MADDISON WAS VERY CLOSE TO OPENING THE SCORING FOR CHARLTON ATHLETIC THERE WITH THAT FREE KICK!!!!!!! - And from the resulting corner kick, Marcus Maddison has curled the ball into the side netting as Marcus Maddison was looking to score directly from the corner kick, but the ball has gone out of play for A Gillingham Goal-Kick.
And In The Fourteenth Minute Of The Match, Conor Washington is flagged for offside from Marcus Maddison’s lofted through-ball over the top, and we’re just starting to see moments of quality from Charlton Athletic, especially from Marcus Maddison in the past few minutes of the game, And In The Fifteenth Minute Of The Match, Gillingham created a half chance to try and open the scoring, Scott Robertson has possession of the ball in Gillingham’s Half Of The Pitch, And Scott Robertson passes the ball square to Connor Ogilvie down the left side of the pitch, And Connor Ogilvie takes a touch to control the ball, before kicking a diagonal cross-field cross towards one of Kyle Dempsey or Jordan Graham, But Ian Maatsen was in the right place at the right time to knock the ball back towards Ben Amos In The Charlton Athletic Goal.
Gillingham then concede two fouls in quick succession, Jack Tucker is penalised for his foul on Conor Washington on the halfway line, And Scott Robertson is penalised for his foul on Omar Bogle just inside Gillingham’s Half Of The Pitch, And it is from this free kick where Charlton Athletic almost opened the scoring, Because Ben Watson has essentially gone for goal from the halfway line and Jack Bonham has just about done enough to tip the ball over the crossbar at the expense of conceding a corner kick, and that’s twice now that Charlton Athletic have almost caught Jack Bonham out, thankfully, Jack Bonham was alert enough to tip the ball over the crossbar, But maybe someone should had stood in-front of the ball to prevent Ben Watson from taking a quick free kick like that which almost saw the visitor’s open the scoring, and from the resulting corner kick, Charlton Athletic almost opened the scoring again, Andrew Shinnie clips a high and hanging cross towards the back-stick and Darren Pratley is there at the far post to header the ball goal-wards and Jack Tucker has headed the ball off the line, however, Referee Robert Lewis has blown his whistle for a foul and Gillingham have been awarded a defensive free kick.
And from here, despite being under considerable pressure over the past few minutes, Gillingham had the chance to take the lead, Jack Bonham kicks the ball long down-field and Vadaine Oliver wins the initial aerial challenge and Ryan Jackson wins the second aerial challenge to header the ball forwards towards Kyle Dempsey, who flicks the ball on towards Jordan Graham, And Jordan Graham manages to pass the ball back to Ryan Jackson, who goes on a driving run forwards down the right side of the pitch, And Ryan Jackson lays the ball off to Jordan Graham, who passes the ball back towards Robbie McKenzie, And Robbie McKenzie spins past Marcus Maddison before passing the ball down the line towards Jordan Graham, And Jordan Graham runs down the right side of the pitch before passing the ball square to Dominic Samuel on the edge of Charlton Athletic’s Penalty Area, And Dominic Samuel scuff’s his shot towards goal and Ben Amos makes a routine save in goal.
However, there is a stoppage in play because Ryan Jackson had gone down injured whilst that attack was in motion for Gillingham and Ryan Jackson needs some treatment And Ben Amos has thrown the ball out of play for a throw on so that Ryan Jackson can be seen to, Thankfully, Ryan Jackson Is OK to continue playing for Gillingham, Now Gillingham can use five substitutes in this match, and I would assume that Robbie McKenzie would have moved to Right Back and one of Josh Eccles, Henry Woods or Matty Willock would have come on if Ryan Jackson was unable to continue, But I would much rather see Ryan Jackson continue playing then having to unsettle Gillingham’s back four with a enforced substitution.
Twenty Minutes Into The Match, And Chris Gunter is penalised for his challenge on Vadaine Oliver and Gillingham have been awarded a free kick on the halfway line, and from the resulting free kick, Zech Medley kicks the ball long down-field and Darren Pratley kicks the ball clear and away from goal and Jack Bonham is well outside his penalty area to kick the ball long down-field, that free kick was a combination of a poor long ball from Zech Medley, And Charlton Athletic having every out-field player back in there own half to defend that free kick, However, In The Twenty Second Minute Of The Match, Gillingham created a very good goal-scoring opportunity to try and take the lead, Darren Pratley’s forward pass into midfield is intercepted by Robbie McKenzie, who passes the ball forwards down the byline towards Vadaine Oliver, who passes the ball back towards Ryan Jackson, And Ryan Jackson manages to pick out Jordan Graham with a clipped pass down the right flank in Charlton Athletic’s Final Third, And Jordan Graham gets the ball under control before taking on Andrew Shinnie and firing a low cross across the face of goal and Ben Amos can only parry the ball into Kyle Dempsey’s path, And Kyle Dempsey’s follow up effort towards goal is saved by Ben Amos and Ben Watson manages to get the ball clear and away from danger - But that was the chance for Kyle Dempsey to open the scoring for Gillingham.
Twenty Three Minutes Into The Match, And Ryan Jackson is penalised for a foul on Andrew Shinnie, And In The Twenty Fifth Minute Of The Match, Omar Bogle went to ground underneath a challenge from Scott Robertson, And The Charlton Athletic Striker wanted a free kick, only for Bogle himself to be penalised for handball and Gillingham have been awarded a free kick in there own final third, And In The Twenty Seventh Minute In The Match, Gillingham were looking to make the breakthrough, Ryan Jackson manages to pick out Kyle Dempsey with a threaded through-ball down the right side of Charlton Athletic’s Penalty Area, And Kyle Dempsey passes the ball back to Jordan Graham, who gets the ball under control before passing the ball inside to Ryan Jackson, who manages to work the ball out-wide to Kyle Dempsey, And Kyle Dempsey passes the ball through to Jordan Graham on the over-lap, And Jordan Graham takes on Andrew Shinnie, but Jordan Graham’s Cross hits the back of The Brian Moore Stand, and whilst the link up play between Ryan Jackson, Kyle Dempsey and Jordan Graham has improved, It’s almost at times like we’re trying to give Jordan Graham the ball expecting him to deliver the crosses we saw for Dominic Samuel and Vadaine Oliver’s Goals against Woking In The FA Cup First Round.
Twenty Eight Minutes Into The Match, And Charlton Athletic came close to opening the scoring, Marcus Maddison manages to pick out Ian Maatsen with a lofted clipped pass and Ian Maatsen’s Header was saved by Jack Bonham, think of Alex MacDonald’s pass for Trae Coyle’s goal against Arsenal’s U21’s In The Football League Trophy, Marcus Maddison’s pass was very similar to Alex MacDonald’s Pass, And from here, Jack Bonham quickly throws the ball out-wide to Jordan Graham, who runs down the right side of the pitch in possession of the ball before being cynically fouled by Marcus Maddison, And Gillingham have been awarded a free kick and Marcus Maddison has rightfully been shown A Yellow Card as well, and it is during this moment in the livestream that I Follow Lagged for a moment or two, much to my frustration and irritation.
And from the resulting free kick, Jack Tucker kicks a high and hanging ball towards the edge of Charlton Athletic’s Penalty Area and Vadaine Oliver flicks the ball on towards Dominic Samuel and Dominic Samuel passes the ball back towards Connor Ogilvie, And Connor Ogilvie skips inside centrally to evade the challenge from Omar Bogle, And Connor Ogilvie manages to whip in a dangerous in-swinging cross towards Vadaine Oliver at the far post, And Vadaine Oliver’s first time shot towards goal is brilliantly saved by Ben Amos and Ian Maatsen manages to boot the ball clear and away from danger - AND THAT WAS THE CHANCE FOR GILLINGHAM TO OPEN THE SCORING!!!!! - I had actually missed the initial effort on goal from Vadaine Oliver because of technical problems with I Follow, But I did see the replay, That was the chance for Gillingham to go 1-0 up.
Thirty One Minutes Into The Match, And I thought Scott Robertson should have been penalised for a foul, but play continue’s with Connor Ogilvie in possession of the ball and Connor Ogilvie manages to thread the ball through to Dominic Samuel on the over-lap down the left side of the pitch, And Dominic Samuel runs forwards in possession of the ball, cuts inside right inside Charlton Athletic’s Penalty Area, And Dominic Samuel is challenged by Ben Watson, And Ben Watson’s attempted clearance is charged down by Connor Ogilvie, and the ball loops up into the air and as the ball comes back down again, Connor Ogilvie gets the ball under control before being challenged by Ben Watson, And Gillingham have been awarded a free kick, Was that a free kick for Gillingham ??? I am not so sure, But this is an opportunity for Gillingham to put Charlton Athletic under a lot of pressure defensively, and from the resulting free kick, Jordan Graham’s in-swinging cross towards the back-stick and is over-hit and Jack Tucker cannot make a telling connection on the ball and Connor Ogilvie cannot keep the ball in play and the ball has gone out of play for A Charlton Athletic Throw On.
And In The Thirty Third Minute Of The Match, Marcus Maddison almost manages to get on to the end of a long pass down-field and Scott Robertson manages to intercept the ball, evade the attempted challenge from Omar Bogle before running forwards in possession of the ball and Scott Robertson is fouled by Albi Morgan and Gillingham have been awarded a free kick in there own half of the pitch, and you have to say well done to Scott Robertson, Because I thought for a moment that Marcus Maddison was through on goal for Charlton Athletic, And from the resulting free kick, Gillingham created a half chance to try and open the scoring, Jack Bonham kicks the ball long down-field and Vadaine Oliver wins the aerial challenge to header the ball on towards Kyle Dempsey and the ball just takes a double deflection off Chris Gunter and Ian Maatsen and the ball runs very kindly into Ben Amos’s path, And The Charlton Athletic Goalkeeper gathers the ball with ease.
Thirty Five Minutes Into The Match, Jordan Graham is fouled by both Andrew Shinnie and Ian Maatsen, And Gillingham have been awarded a free kick on the halfway line right in-front of the dugouts, and from the resulting free kick, Jack Tucker kicks a high and hanging diagonal cross-field cross towards Connor Ogilvie, who wins the initial aerial challenge to header the ball down the line and Chris Gunter and Vadaine Oliver were both competing for the loose ball and I thought the ball had gone out of play for A Charlton Athletic Goal-Kick, Only to find out that Vadaine Oliver had been penalised for a foul on The Charlton Athletic make-shift centre back.
Thirty Sixth Minutes Into The Match, And Vadaine Oliver is penalised for a foul on Chris Gunter and Referee Robert Lewis is having a word with Vadaine Oliver after two fouls in quick succession, and from the resulting free kick, Ben Watson passes the ball square to Darren Pratley, who passes the ball back inside centrally to Ben Watson, who takes a few touches in possession of the ball before passing the ball square to Darren Pratley again, And Darren Pratley plays a short pass square to Albi Morgan, who runs forwards in possession of the ball before trying to pick out Omar Bogle with a long clipped pass down the line, But Zech Medley manages to block Omar Bogle’s attempted back-heal through to Conor Washington, however, Omar Bogle still manages to retain possession of the ball before passing the ball short to Andrew Shinnie, who manages to pass the ball out-wide to Adam Matthews down the right side of the pitch in Gillingham’s Final Third - Gillingham’s Left Side Of The Pitch - And Adam Matthews whips in a dangerous in-swinging cross towards the far post and there is a collision between Ryan Jackson and Omar Bogle inside Gillingham’s Penalty Area and Referee Robert Lewis points to the penalty spot straight away, and looking at the replay of the penalty decision, It’s clumsy, It looks soft, But Ryan Jackson not appealing for a penalty kick not to be awarded tells you that the penalty decision is the correct decision, But you can see why people were calling it a soft decision.
But before the penalty kick could be taken, there appears to be a argument between Omar Bogle, and Conor Washington over who is taking the penalty, And Andrew Shinnie and Marcus Maddison have to get involved to decide who is taking the penalty, and after a bit of a delay it is Conor Washington who steps up to take the penalty kick for Charlton Athletic, And Conor Washington smashes the ball low towards the bottom left corner of the net and Jack Bonham dives low to his right AND JACK BONHAM HAS SAVED CONOR WASHINGTON’S PENALTY KICK TO KEEP THE SCORE-LINE LEVEL AT 0-0 - And Jack Tucker smashes the ball out of play for A Charlton Athletic Throw On - I over-celebrated that penalty save from Jack Bonham, and looking at the replay again, It really is a remarkable penalty save from Jack Bonham, and could this penalty save be the turning point for The Gills ???
Forty Minutes Into The Match, And Charlton Athletic came close to opening the scoring again, Darren Pratley passes the ball forwards to Andrew Shinnie, who passes the ball backwards to Ben Watson, And Ben Watson takes a few touches in possession of the ball before passing the ball out-wide to Adam Matthews, And Adam Matthews passes the ball backwards to Ben Watson, who takes a few touches in possession of the ball before passing the ball out-wide to Darren Pratley, Who passes the ball down the line towards Ian Maatsen, And Ian Maatsen passes the ball square inside to Conor Washington, who manages to retain possession of the ball before passing the ball backwards to Darren Pratley, And Darren Pratley plays a one / two with Ian Maatsen before passing the ball backwards towards Ben Watson, who passes the ball square to Chris Gunter, And Chris Gunter runs forwards in possession of the ball before threading a through-ball through to Omar Bogle, who lays the ball off into Andrew Shinnie’s Path, And Andrew Shinnie manages to thread a forwards pass through to Conor Washington on the edge of Gillingham’s Penalty Area, And Conor Washington works his way into a shooting position before seeing his shot towards goal deflect off Zech Medley and the ball deflects just wide of the far right post and the ball goes out of play for A Charlton Athletic Corner Kick, And From The Resulting Corner Kick, Marcus Maddison whips in a dangerous in-swinging cross towards the back-stick where Darren Pratley is situated, And Connor Ogilvie does enough to prevent Darren Pratley from making meaningful contact with the ball and the ball has gone out of play for A Gillingham Goal-Kick.
Forty Two Minutes Into The Match, And Gillingham win themselves a free kick because there is a coming together between Vadaine Oliver and Albi Morgan, And Referee Robert Lewis has awarded a free kick in Gillingham’s Favour, and from the resulting free kick, Jordan Graham whips in a dangerous in-swinging cross and Connor Ogilvie wins the initial aerial challenge and Chris Gunter manages to kick the ball partially clear and away from danger, But Kyle Dempsey is on to the loose ball, And Kyle Dempsey manages to pass the ball to Connor Ogilvie on the edge of Charlton Athletic’s Penalty Area, And Connor Ogilvie’s pass through to Vadaine Oliver takes a double deflection and Chris Gunter kicks the ball up into the air and as the ball came back down, I thought Connor Ogilvie was fouled by Omar Bogle, but the ball deflects out of play for A Charlton Athletic Throw On, And no foul was awarded in Gillingham’s Favour.
And from the resulting throw on, Ian Maatsen’s quick throw towards the halfway line see’s Jack Tucker kick the ball long down-field and Vadaine Oliver does brilliantly to retain possession of the ball and lay the ball off towards Dominic Samuel, who takes a touch to control the ball, work his way into a shooting position, And Dominic Samuel has unleashed a fiercely driven effort towards the bottom left corner of the net and Dominic Samuel’s driven effort towards goal just goes wide of the far left post with Ben Amos diving at full stretch in The Charlton Athletic Goal, However, It appears that Dominic Samuel has hurt himself taking that shot on and Dominic Samuel requires some treatment, And this treatment for Dominic Samuel will see more time added on at the end of the first half, but Dominic Samuel’s injury is perhaps more concerning at this moment in time, thankfully, Dominic Samuel is back on his feat and OK to continue for now, but that injury is clearly going to be assessed at half time.
And the final noteworthy moment of the first half goes to Gillingham, Scott Robertson has possession of the ball on the halfway line, And Scott Robertson passes the ball forwards to Vadaine Oliver, who plays a one touch layoff into Kyle Dempsey’s Path, And Kyle Dempsey tries to pick out Jordan Graham with a pass out-wide, But Ian Maatsen manages to intercept and pass the ball backwards to Ben Amos, And Ben Amos passes the ball square to Chris Gunter, who passes the ball out-wide to Adam Matthews, And Adam Matthews passes the ball inside centrally to Ben Watson, who’s clipped pass down the line see’s Connor Ogilvie header the ball forwards to Dominic Samuel, who passes the ball back to Connor Ogilvie, And Connor Ogilvie clips a long ball down-field and Vadaine Oliver headers the ball into Kyle Dempsey’s Path, And Kyle Dempsey manages to retain possession of the ball and pass the ball back to Dominic Samuel, who passes the ball back to Connor Ogilvie, And Connor Ogilvie runs forwards in possession of the ball in a more central position before passing the ball out-wide to Kyle Dempsey, And Kyle Dempsey takes a few touches before passing the ball inside to Connor Ogilvie, And Connor Ogilvie goes out-wide and digs out a cross towards the back-stick and Ryan Jackson arrives late to keep the attack alive, And Ryan Jackson takes a touch to control the ball before working himself out-wide and Ryan Jackson digs out a cross towards the far post and Vadaine Oliver is clearly penalised for climbing all over the back of Adam Matthews, And Charlton Athletic have been awarded a defensive free kick.
And there is the half time whistle at Priestfield Stadium with the half time score, Gillingham 0-0 Charlton Athletic, and both teams will be wondering how they have not got themselves on the score-sheet in the first half, and Steve Evans and Lee Bowyer will have a lot to say at half time to try and give there players a boost for a very important second half.
HALF TIME: GILLINGHAM 0-0 CHARLTON ATHLETIC
I uploaded the following status updates on to Facebook And Twitter At Half Time,,,, HALF TIME: GILLINGHAM 0-0 CHARLTON ATHLETIC - Jack Bonham’s Penalty Save preserves the goalless score-line at the break, Bonham has had to tip Maddison's free kick on to the crossbar, And Shinnie almost opened the scoring for Charlton with a effort towards goal which goes just wide, Gillingham have had there chances to score with Amos making a double save from Graham's low cross and the follow up effort on goal from Dempsey was also saved, Samuel's shot just before half time flashes just wide, Ogilvie has also headed over from Robertson's cross from a corner, Samuel and Jackson have both gone down injured requiring treatment in the first half, and with five substitutions being introduced, you just wonder if Evans takes the precautionary option and sub both players at half time to make sure they are available for selection in mid-week.
You just wonder if Priestfield Stadium had supporters inside the ground for Gillingham V Charlton Athletic, What the atmosphere would have been like from Gillingham Supporters after Jack Bonham’s Penalty Save and maybe the reaction from the supporters could have galvanised and inspired the players to kick on towards the end of the first half, I do think the supporters reaction would have had a positive reaction towards the players and that could well have made all the difference as well.
As for technical issue’s with I Follow, Around the thirty minute mark, There were moments where the stream lagged and the spinning circle appeared in the centre of the screen, And I just about saw the second replay of Vadaine Oliver’s shot towards goal being saved by Ben Amos, much to my frustration and irritation, But as for other noteworthy moments in the first half, Gillingham’s Midfield trio of Scott Robertson, Kyle Dempsey and Robbie McKenzie are pressurising Charlton Athletic into unforced error’s and whilst the three man central midfield have put in plenty of effort, Gillingham are not creating anything down the left, Dominic Samuel has hardly been in the game, and other then Connor Ogilvie’s cross for Vadaine Oliver’s effort towards goal, Gillingham have mostly been attacking down the right side of the pitch.
I do believe that penalty save from Jack Bonham could well be the turning point for Gillingham in this match, we saw how Jordan Graham’s Penalty being saved and Alex MacDonald getting sent off saw Sunderland win against Gillingham, perhaps the reverse can happen and Gillingham can win against Charlton Athletic, which would be a great way for Gillingham to start after coming back from a ten day break as Lincoln City V Gillingham was postponed because of Lincoln City having players called up to International Duty, Hopefully, We can see Gillingham kick on in the second half and pick up three vital points against Charlton Athletic - COME ON THE GILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SECOND HALF:
And at the start of the second half, neither Steve Evans or Lee Bowyer made any substitutions at half time, It is going to be interesting to see how five substitutions is going to be implemented by both clubs in the second half, whether there is a maximum number of stoppages for substitutions (EG: Can you make five individual substitutions) So this is going to be a indicator on how five substitutions are going to be used throughout The Football League.
And the first noteworthy moment of the second half see’s Jack Tucker kick the ball long down-field and Vadaine Oliver is penalised for a foul on Chris Gunter, And Charlton Athletic have been awarded a free kick in there own final third, and from the resulting free kick, Charlton Athletic almost took the lead, Chris Gunter passes the ball back to Ben Amos, who passes the ball short to Darren Pratley, And Darren Pratley gets the ball under control before passing the ball back to Ben Amos, And Ben Amos passes the ball short to Chris Gunter, who passes the ball square to Darren Pratley, And Darren Pratley passes the ball down the line towards Ian Maatsen on the left flank and Ian Maatsen passes the ball square to Ben Watson, who passes the ball backwards to Darren Pratley, And Darren Pratley passes the ball square to Chris Gunter, who runs forwards in possession of the ball, And Chris Gunter passes the ball short to Adam Matthews on the byline right in-front of the dugout, And Adam Matthews runs forwards in a more central position on the pitch before threading a pass through to Andrew Shinnie, who manages to pick out Ian Maatsen down the left flank in Gillingham’s Final Third, And Ian Maatsen continue’s his forwards inside Gillingham’s Penalty Area, And Ian Maatsen’s cross across the face of goal see’s Omar Bogle divert the ball into the air, and as the ball came back down again, Albi Morgan has struck the ball full on the volley and Connor Ogilvie must have got the faintest of touches on to the ball to divert the ball over the crossbar for A Charlton Athletic Corner Kick - Still, that was the best goal-scoring opportunity either team has created in the second half - And From The Resulting Corner Kick, Andrew Shinnie whips in a dangerous in-swinging cross and Connor Ogilvie headers the ball clear and away from danger, But Ian Maatsen is on to the loose ball for Charlton Athletic, And Ian Maatsen passes the ball out-wide to Albi Morgan, who passes the ball down the line towards Darren Pratley, And Robbie McKenzie times his sliding challenge to perfection to knock the ball out of play for A Charlton Athletic Throw On, right in the far corner of The Medway Stand / Brian Moore Stand Side Of The Pitch.
And from the resulting throw on, Albi Morgan throws the ball back to Chris Gunter, who gets the ball under control before firing in a dangerous in-swinging cross and Jack Tucker headers the ball clear and Ian Maatsen is on to the loose ball ahead of Jordan Graham and Ian Maatsen see’s his shot towards goal deflect off Zech Medley and the ball loops up into the air and Zech Medley misses the second ball and Jack Tucker kicks the ball up into the air and Albi Morgan tries to flick the ball back inside Gillingham’s Penalty Area and Vadaine Oliver has smashed the ball clear and away from danger and Gillingham survive the latest attacking onslaught on to our own goal.
Forty Nine Minutes Into The Match, And Gillingham win a throw on right in-front of the dugouts, and from the resulting throw on, Connor Ogilvie throws the ball long down the line and Chris Gunter wins the initial aerial challenge, But Darren Pratley gets to the loose ball ahead of Kyle Dempsey and Darren Pratley prevents the ball from going out of play for A Gillingham Corner Kick by kicking the ball out of play for a throw on, and from the resulting throw on, Connor Ogilvie hurls in a long dangerous throw and Ben Amos makes a comfortable save in goal for Charlton Athletic, and from here, Ben Amos rolls the ball short to Darren Pratley, who passes the ball out-wide to Ian Maatsen, And Ian Maatsen plays a one / two with Darren Pratley before playing a give and go with Andrew Shinnie, And Ian Maatsen passes the ball back to Ben Amos, who passes the ball short to Chris Gunter, And Chris Gunter passes the ball square to Darren Pratley, who plays a short pass towards Andrew Shinnie, And Andrew Shinnie passes the ball across to Chris Gunter, who passes the ball short out-wide to Marcus Maddison, And Marcus Maddison, Chris Gunter and Ben Watson all link up nicely for Charlton And Marcus Maddison tries to go past Scott Robertson, And I actually thought that Scott Robertson had won possession of the ball, only for A Soft Free Kick to be awarded in Charlton Athletic’s Favour.
Fifty Two Minutes Into The Match, And Andrew Shinnie’s pass towards Adam Matthews is over-hit and runs out of play for A Gillingham Throw On, But for the two minutes prior to this, Charlton Athletic completely dominated possession of the ball and Gillingham have to keep there shape and retain there defensive structure to ensure that Charlton Athletic cannot open Gillingham up defensively, Charlton Athletic are starting to show there qualities in possession of the ball for the vast majority of the second half and clearly Lee Bowyer has told his players to move the ball between the thirds quickly and incisively.
Fifty Three Minutes Into The Match, And Kyle Dempsey blocks Andrew Shinnie’s cross and the ball deflects out of play for A Charlton Athletic Corner Kick, And From The Resulting Corner Kick, Marcus Maddison whips in a dangerous in-swinging cross towards the near post and Ryan Jackson manages to clear the ball towards the edge of the edge of our own penalty area and Ian Maatsen gets the ball under control before firing a low fiercely driven shot towards goal which takes a slight deflection and Jack Bonham can only parry the ball back inside the six yard box and Jack Tucker slides in to make a crucial interception to clear the ball away from goal - AND THAT WAS THE CHANCE FOR CHARLTON ATHLETIC TO OPEN THE SCORING!!!!!!
Fifty Five Minutes Into The Match, And Charlton Athletic were on the front-foot again, Albi Morgan has tried to pick out Omar Bogle with a dangerous in-swinging cross towards the back-stick, but the cross from Albi Morgan was over-hit and the ball has gone out of play for A Gillingham Goal-Kick, Charlton Athletic’s appeals for a corner kick were waved away by Referee Robert Lewis, And In The Fifty Sixth Minute Of The Match, Gillingham created a half chance to try and open the scoring, Robbie McKenzie has possession of the ball in central midfield in Charlton Athletic’s Half Of The Pitch, And Robbie McKenzie passes the ball out-wide to Jordan Graham, And Jordan Graham takes on Andrew Shinnie and fires in a low dangerous cross which Ben Amos was able to gather with ease, A Very Good Cross From Jordan Graham, but no-one was able to get on the end of that cross.
Sixty Minutes Into The Match, And Ian Maatsen is penalised for his foul on Jordan Graham, And Gillingham have been awarded a free kick, and from the resulting free kick, Jordan Graham fires in a dangerous cross and Jack Tucker does exceptionally well to get the ball under control and Jack Tucker’s cross towards Vadaine Oliver is routinely saved by Ben Amos In The Charlton Athletic Goal, And In The Sixty Second Minute Of The Match, Gillingham created another goal-scoring opportunity, Jordan Graham has possession of the ball in Gillingham’s Half Of The Pitch, And Jordan Graham goes on a driving run forwards down the right side of the pitch and Jordan Graham whips in a dangerous in-swinging cross towards the far post and Vadaine Oliver’s diving header goes over the crossbar and that was the chance for Gillingham to take the lead, to be fair to Vadaine Oliver, He was always stretching to get on to the end of that cross from Jordan Graham and the last two goal-scoring opportunities have just given Gillingham something to build on.
Sixty Two Minutes Into The Match, And Kyle Dempsey is flagged for offside from Jordan Graham’s clipped pass down the line, and after that stoppage in play, Gillingham make there first substitution of the game as John Akinde comes on to replace Scott Robertson, in what was a substitution which was a bit of a surprise it has to be said, John Akinde will clearly go up-front alongside Vadaine Oliver and Jordan Graham and Dominic Samuel will still occupy the wide position’s, I guess it was always likely that Scott Robertson was going to be substituted, but the surprise was seeing a change of shape, and when play resumes, Vadaine Oliver is penalised and booked for his challenge on Ben Watson as Dominic Samuel had passed the ball towards Vadaine Oliver, And Oliver’s first touch was poor and he slid in on Ben Watson and the booking was the correct decision in my opinion.
And this stoppage in play allows Charlton Athletic to make a triple substitution as Chuks Aneke, Alex Gilbey, And Paul Smyth come on to replace Omar Bogle, Marcus Maddison and Conor Washington as Charlton Athletic rotate there attacking options to try and see if there substitutes can turn this 0-0 draw into a seventh league win in a row, and that is almost precisely what happened when play resumes, Ben Amos passes the ball square to Chris Gunter, who passes the ball square to Darren Pratley, And Darren Pratley kicks the ball long down-field towards Chuks Aneke, who cannot retain possession of the ball ahead of Ryan Jackson, And Ryan Jackson takes too long in possession of the ball and this allows Chuks Aneke to get possession of the ball back and run forwards towards the edge of Gillingham’s Penalty Area in possession of the ball, And Chuks Aneke passes the ball square to Alex Gilbey on the edge of Gillingham’s Penalty Area, And Alex Gilbey’s first time effort towards goal is saved and gathered at the second attempt by Jack Bonham - Charlton Athletic’s Substitutes almost combined perfectly to score the opening goal of the game.
Sixty Seven Minutes Into The Match, And Ian Maatsen has barged Jordan Graham down to the deck right in Charlton Athletic’s Final Third, And Gillingham have been awarded a free kick in a very promising position on the pitch, and from the resulting free kick, Jordan Graham fires in a dangerous cross and Vadaine Oliver’s header is blocked by Alex Gilbey and Darren Pratley boots the ball clear and away from danger at the expense of conceding a throw on, Something different from Gillingham from that free kick, and we’re just starting to ask a few more questions defensively from Charlton Athletic, and from the resulting throw on, Connor Ogilvie hurls in a long dangerous throw and Vadaine Oliver wins the initial aerial challenge and Alex Gibley headers the ball out-wide to Albi Morgan, who boots the ball clear towards the halfway line, and Jack Tucker gets the ball under control before clipping a long ball down-field and John Akinde headers the ball on towards Jordan Graham, Who takes on Ian Maatsen before whipping in a dangerous in-swinging cross and Ben Amos makes a comfortable save in goal for Charlton Athletic, And from here, Ben Amos’s roll out is intercepted by Kyle Dempsey, who passes the ball short to Dominic Samuel, And Dominic Samuel works his way into a shooting position on the edge of Charlton Athletic’s Penalty Area, But Dominic Samuel’s shot towards goal is poor and Ben Amos makes a very routine save in goal.
However, In The Seventy First Minute Of The Match, Gillingham manage to win themselves a penalty kick, Chris Gunter passes the ball forwards towards Chuks Aneke, who cannot get the ball under control and this enables Connor Ogilvie to smash the ball long over the top for John Akinde to chase after and Chris Gunter has clipped John Akinde inside Charlton Athletic’s Penalty Area REF!!!!!!!! Was my response, and Referee Robert Lewis took a long time before he made a decision, and finally Gillingham were awarded a penalty kick, and this is a massive moment for Gillingham now, and up steps Jordan Graham to take the penalty “COME ON JORDAN GRAHAM” And Jordan Graham places the ball into a right / central area of the goal and although Ben Amos dived the right way and got a touch on to the ball, it wasn’t enough to prevent Gillingham from taking the lead and that is a huge goal for The Gills - GILLINGHAM 1-0 CHARLTON ATHLETIC - John Akinde did really well to win the penalty kick, And Jordan Graham saw his previous penalty saved against Sunderland, But this time, Jordan Graham does score from the penalty spot, and this match could well be the tell of two penalties, Jack Bonham’s penalty save in the first half, and Jordan Graham scoring from the penalty spot in the second half.
And In The Seventy Sixth Minute Of The Match, Gillingham had the chance to go 2-0 up, John Akinde manages to retain possession of the ball before playing the ball around the corner towards Jordan Graham, And Jordan Graham goes on a driving run down the right side of the pitch and Jordan Graham see’s his pass towards Vadaine Oliver cleared by Chris Gunter, And Ben Watson gets the ball under control, However, John Akinde’s challenge plays the ball through to Jordan Graham, And Jordan Graham waits for support before passing the ball out-wide to Ryan Jackson, And Ryan Jackson passes the ball back to Jordan Graham, And Jordan Graham passes the ball back to Robbie McKenzie, And Robbie McKenzie runs forwards in possession of the ball before passing the ball square to Kyle Dempsey, And Kyle Dempsey manages to retain possession of the ball before passing the ball out-wide to Jordan Graham, And Jordan Graham works his way towards the byline and deliver’s a cross towards Vadaine Oliver at the far post and Adam Matthews had done enough to shield the ball into Ben Amos’s path and The Charlton Athletic Goalkeeper makes a comfortable save, But Vadaine Oliver has collided with the advertisement boards behind the goal and requires treatment, thankfully, Vadaine Oliver is OK to continue playing for Gillingham, But you just wonder with The 1-0 lead and Vadaine Oliver getting that injury, If Gillingham should bring on a additional midfielder for Oliver and revert back to the 4-3-3 formation ???
However, In The Seventy Eighth Minute Of The Match, Gillingham had the chance to go 2-0 up, Ryan Jackson allows a cross from Chuks Aneke to run through inside Gillingham’s Penalty Area and Ryan Jackson comes away in possession of the ball before passing the ball out-wide to Jordan Graham, And Jordan Graham takes a few touches in possession of the ball before threading a through-ball through to Vadaine Oliver, And Vadaine Oliver is one on one with Ben Amos and Vadaine Oliver see’s his low shot towards goal brilliantly saved by Ben Amos - AND THAT WAS THE CHANCE FOR GILLINGHAM TO GO 2-0 UP !!!!!! - You just wonder if Vadaine Oliver could have dinked Ben Amos or ran wide to get a shot off on goal ??? - If Gillingham scored for 2-0 then that would have put Gillingham in a fantastic position to pick up all three points.
But the chances are still there for Gillingham, And Gillingham created another goal-scoring opportunity in The Seventy Ninth Minute, Ian Maatsen is penalised for his foul on Jordan Graham in Gillingham’s Half Of The Pitch, And From The Resulting Free Kick, Gillingham had the chance to go 2-0 up, Jack Tucker has kicked a high and hanging diagonal cross-field cross towards Vadaine Oliver, And Vadaine Oliver’s looping header was on target and Ben Amos makes a comfortable save.
Zech Medley is then penalised for his challenge on Chuks Aneke And Charlton Athletic have been awarded a free kick, and from the resulting free kick, Ben Watson passes the ball forwards towards Alex Gibley, And Alex Gibley passes the ball out-wide to Andrew Shinnie down the left side of Gillingham’s Penalty Area In Gillingham’s Final Third, And Andrew Shinnie is twisting and turning and passes the ball back to Ian Maatsen, who clips in a dangerous low cross and Ben Watson’s shot towards goal is blocked and Zech Medley smashes the ball clear and away from goal and anywhere will do as far as Gillingham are concerned.
Eighty Minutes Into The Match, And Alex Gilbey  is penalised and booked for his challenge on Dominic Samuel, and from the resulting free kick, Jack Bonham kicks the ball long down-field and Vadaine Oliver manages to retain possession of the ball and pass the ball back to Connor Ogilvie, who clips the ball long down the line and John Akinde manages to retain possession of the ball before over-running the ball out of play for A Charlton Athletic Goal-Kick, And John Akinde was a bit unlucky there, and John Akinde has made an impact since coming on as a substitute for The Gills.
However, the next passage of play see’s Charlton Athletic score the equaliser, Ben Amos passes the ball short to Chris Gunter, who takes a few touches in possession of the ball before passing the ball square to Darren Pratley, And Darren Pratley passes the ball down the line towards Ian Maatsen, who gets the ball under control before passing the ball square to Ben Watson, who takes a few touches in possession of the ball before passing the ball forwards to Andrew Shinnie, And Andrew Shinnie manages to pass the ball forwards towards Paul Smyth, And Paul Smyth gets the ball under control and Paul Smyth evades the attempted challenge from Jack Tucker and runs across Gillingham’s Penalty Area before passing the ball through to Chuks Aneke, Who takes a touch to control the ball before firing the ball into the top left corner of the net from close range and there is nothing that Jack Bonham can do about that and Charlton Athletic have equalised - GILLINGHAM 1-1 CHARLTON ATHLETIC - The defending for that goal was disappointing, and once Chuks Aneke got the ball, Connor Ogilvie and Zech Medley should have closed Chuks Aneke down much quicker to prevent The Charlton Athletic Striker from getting a shot off on goal, and that equaliser has completely changed the game now, any substitution involving taking Oliver or Samuel off for a extra midfielder has completely gone now, Gillingham need to see if they can re-take the lead during the remaining minutes left in this match.
And when play resumes, fouls by Vadaine Oliver and Kyle Dempsey perhaps show that the match is starting to turn in Charlton Athletic’s Favour, And Kyle Dempsey was booked for preventing Charlton Athletic from hitting Gillingham on the counter attack, But despite preventing the breakaway, Charlton Athletic still created a decent goal-scoring opportunity from the resulting free kick, Ben Watson passes the ball square to Chris Gunter, who passes the ball out-wide to Adam Matthews, And Adam Matthews passes the ball inside to Ben Watson and Ben Watson passes the ball forwards to Chuks Aneke, who takes a touch to control the ball before threading a pass through to Alex Gibley through by the byline and Alex Gibley fires in a low cross towards the near post, and it was unclear on whether the final touch came off Paul Smyth or Jack Tucker, but fortune favours Gillingham, Because Gillingham have been awarded a goal kick.
Dominic Samuel is then penalised and booked for fouling Adam Matthews, although, I suspect the booking is perhaps for a off the ball incident then the foul itself, and from the resulting free kick, Chris Gunter plays a / one / two with Ben Watson before running forwards in possession of the ball and Chris Gunter kicks the ball long down-field towards Paul Smyth and Zech Medley has no other option other then heading the ball out of play for A Charlton Athletic Corner Kick, and it is from this corner kick where Charlton Athletic almost took the lead, Paul Smyth quickly plays the ball towards Albi Morgan, And Albi Morgan takes one touch to control the ball and another touch to whip in a dangerous in-swinging cross, and Chuks Aneke’s looping header clears Gillingham’s Crossbar - AND THAT WAS THE CHANCE FOR CHARLTON ATHLETIC TO TAKE THE LEAD!!!!!!!!
Once the ball had gone out of play, Gillingham make there second substitution of the game as Trae Coyle comes on for Vadaine Oliver, And I personally thought that Dominic Samuel should have been substituted because he has put in a disappointing performance against Charlton Athletic so far, But maybe moving Dominic Samuel up-front will put him more centrally and allow Dominic Samuel to get on the end of a few crosses, however, It appears that Trae Coyle is going to play alongside John Akinde in attack for the rest of this match.
Eighty Seven Minutes Into This Match, And John Akinde is penalised for a foul on Chris Gunter, and with this stoppage in play, Charlton Athletic make there fourth substitution of the match with Ben Purrington coming on to replace Albi Morgan, And I am looking at who Gillingham can bring on, and Henry Woods, Josh Eccles and Matty Willock are all options to freshen up Gillingham’s Options In Midfield, And From The Resulting Free Kick, Charlton Athletic manage to win themselves a corner kick, Ben Watson plays a one / two with Ben Purrington before passing the ball out-wide to Chris Gunter, And Chris Gunter evades the attempted challenge from John Akinde before passing the ball square to Darren Pratley, who takes a few touches in possession of the ball before kicking the ball long down-field and Ryan Jackson wins the first aerial challenge, Andrew Shinnie wins the second aerial challenge and Ben Purrington wins the third aerial challenge to header the ball down the line towards Andrew Shinnie, And Andrew Shinnie keeps the ball in play and passes the ball down the line towards Paul Smyth, And Paul Smyth see’s his first time cross blocked by Jack Tucker and the ball deflects out of play for A Charlton Athletic Corner Kick, And From The Resulting Corner Kick, Andrew Shinnie whips in a dangerous in-swinging cross and although Chuks Aneke wins the initial aerial challenge, Chuks Aneke had fouled Jack Tucker in doing so and Gillingham have been awarded a defensive free kick.
Ninety Minutes Into The Match, And Gillingham had a half chance to take the lead late on, Dominic Samuel just about manages to retain possession of the ball close to the halfway line before passing the ball square to Ryan Jackson down the right side of the pitch, And Ryan Jackson runs forwards in possession of the ball before passing the ball out-wide to Jordan Graham, And Jordan Graham takes on Ben Purrington and runs towards the byline and Jordan Graham’s cross is dropped by Ben Amos and Trae Coyle manages to pass the ball back towards Robbie McKenzie on the edge of Charlton Athletic’s Penalty Area and Robbie McKenzie has hit a fiercely driven effort towards goal which is blocked and the ball ricochets back to Robbie McKenzie, who tries to pick out Vadaine Oliver with a lofted through-ball but Chris Gunter wins the aerial challenge and Kyle Dempsey wins the second aerial challenge but Adam Matthews is on to the loose ball and passes the ball forwards towards Paul Smyth, who manages to keep the ball in play before passing the ball long down the line and Ian Maatsen is through down the right side of the pitch - Gillingham’s Left - And Charlton Athletic can hit Gillingham on the counter attack here and Ian Maatsen’s pass through to Chuks Aneke is intercepted by Jack Tucker, And I actually thought that Ian Maatsen had fouled Jack Tucker afterwards in attempted to win possession of the ball, But Charlton Athletic are awarded a throw on.
The Fourth Official has shown FIVE ADDITIONAL MINUTES OF ADDED TIME ON TO THE BOARD, Ian Maatsen was booked for throwing the ball into the floor whilst Jack Tucker was down on the deck getting treatment, And as we are entering added time, Kyle Dempsey is fouled by Andrew Shinnie and Gillingham have been awarded a free kick which relieves the pressure building on to our goal, and it is from here where Gillingham almost scored what surely would have been the winning goal, Jack Bonham kicks the ball long down-field and Chris Gunter wins the initial aerial challenge, but the ball drops kindly to Kyle Dempsey, who takes one touch to control the ball and another touch to smash the ball into the back of The Rainham End, and unfortunately not into the back of the net - Had Kyle Dempsey scored then Gillingham were in a fantastic position to pick up all three points.
Ninety Two Minutes Into The Match, And Zech Medley times his challenge to perfection on Ian Maatsen and the ball diverts out of play for A Charlton Athletic Corner Kick, And From The Resulting Corner Kick, Andrew Shinnie whips in a dangerous in-swinging cross and the ball hits Ben Watson and Jack Bonham dives low quickly to make a very important save, And In The Ninety Third Minute Of The Match, Robbie McKenzie makes absolutely sure to foul Paul Smyth, and that foul prevents Charlton Athletic from creating a serious goal-scoring opportunity and Robbie McKenzie is correctly booked for that foul, and from the resulting free kick, Ben Watson plays a one / two with Chris Gunter before passing the ball square to Andrew Shinnie, who passes the ball centrally to Ben Watson, And Ben Watson retains possession of the ball before passing the ball forwards to Alex Gibley, who slips on the ball and Trae Coyle manages to intercept the ball before being fouled by Alex Gibley, And Gillingham have been awarded a free kick.
And it is from this free kick where Gillingham create the final noteworthy moment of the match, Jack Bonham kicks the ball long down-field and John Akinde wins the aerial challenge to flick the ball on towards Trae Coyle and Ben Amos was quick off his line to gather the ball with ease, and after five additional minutes of added time, both teams share one point a piece and the full time score is Gillingham 1-1 Charlton Athletic.
FULL TIME: GILLINGHAM 1-1 CHARLTON ATHLETIC
I uploaded the following status updates on to Facebook and Twitter after the full time whistle,,,,, FULL TIME: GILLINGHAM 1-1 CHARLTON ATHLETIC - I think both teams can look at moments in the game where they thought "If Only" For Charlton, There If Only Moment was Washington's Penalty saved by Bonham, For Gillingham, Our if only moment was Oliver's one on one effort saved by Amos, When Graham opened the scoring for Gillingham from the penalty spot, I thought Gillingham taking the lead in The 73rd Minute would put The Gills in a great position to pick up three vital points, Charlton used the depth of there squad, one of there subs Aneke scored the equaliser, Both teams had chances to score more then one goal a piece, Maatsen's driven effort towards goal takes a deflection and Bonham has to make the save and Tucker clears the re-bound, Oliver's header from Graham's Cross fails to hit the target, Bonham saves Gilbey's shot towards goal, Aneke's header towards goal in The 85th minute is headed over the crossbar, McKenzie see's his driven effort towards goal blocked and Dempsey was unfortunate not to hit the target with a speculative effort from distance - would had been a superb goal from Dempsey if that went in. Charlton used the depth of there squad to freshen up there attacking options, one of those subs Aneke came on and scored, Akinde came on and won the penalty which Graham scored, But I do wonder if Coyle could have come for Samuel? A Good Point For Gills, If only we got all three.
I also mentioned the following,,, However, Had Washington scored his penalty and Oliver failed to convert the one on one chance, we would be talking about a 2-1 defeat in the league and moments like that Oliver Chance change games, 2-0 would have put The Gills in a very strong position to pick up three vital points. - Because whilst we should be pleased with the point Gillingham got against Charlton Athletic, we should be disappointed that we have not picked up all three points, and that chance from Vadaine Oliver needed to be scored for 2-0, Because 2-0 would have put Gillingham in a great position to pick up all three points.
Dominic Samuel struggled out-wide on the left and I don’t think Steve Evans used the additional substitutions to his full advantage, perhaps Matty Willock and Henry Woods could have come on to freshen up the midfield, Because the midfield put in a lot of effort and a lot of pressing against Charlton Athletic all afternoon, And when Trae Coyle came on, I thought Trae Coyle was going to play out-wide on the left, but also, Trae Coyle came on after eighty six minutes and perhaps he should have come on ten minutes earlier when Gillingham were 1-0 up, Charlton Athletic used the depth and quality on there substitutes bench, where as I don’t think Gillingham used the additional substitutes to our full advantage.
Gillingham went with A 4-3-3 Formation, And the switch to 4-2-4 was the change in formation which saw John Akinde win the penalty which Jordan Graham scored, but Dominic Samuel was not involved in the game on the left in either formation, and the vast majority of the attacks for Gillingham came down the right side, Against Woking, Dominic Samuel scored two goals playing as a centre forward, he is not a wide left player, perhaps Dominic Samuel should play down the middle and Vadaine Oliver on the left if Gillingham are to go with A 4-3-3 Formation ???
If you were A Charlton Athletic Supporter, then a draw has to be seen as a decent result, especially when your losing 1-0 with less then ten minutes to play, and when your losing 1-0 away from home, then a point is a good point, Gillingham were 1-0 up, But it was that chance for Vadaine Oliver and had he scored that chance for 2-0 then Gillingham are in a great position to pick up all three points, and three points would have pushed Gillingham four points clear of The League One Relegation Zone instead of the two points clear where we are currently situated.
However, If Gillingham were to win against AFC Wimbledon On Tuesday Night, then the point against Charlton Athletic would be a decent point, and four points from these two matches would be a small step in the right direction for The Gills, again, AFC Wimbledon at home is not going to be a easy game and this is going to be a very tough fixture against a side who did the double over Gillingham in The 2019 / 2020 Season, But a win for Gillingham would make this result against Charlton Athletic look like a much better result - COME ON THE GILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi! So, Ogata is my favorite character, and I’ve been trying to figure out his whole like, philosophy. I’m not sure if you’ve covered this before, but maybe you could help me understand something that seems contradictory to me? It’s about him basically thinking that everyone is the same as him, but, in ch.103, after he’s killed Yuusaku and is killing his father, he says: “a child born from two parents who don’t love each other...grows up to be an adult who’s lacking something fundamental, don’t you think?” so he’s acknowledging that he IS different, right? That he’s “missing something,” BECAUSE his parents didn’t love each other, so why would he say (in ch.243) “everyone‘s the same deep down,” and (in ch.187) “I’m sure you’re the same as me” (to Asirpa) and “‘pure’ people don’t exist in this world,” when he says Yuusaku “grew up to be a man with integrity...because he was born to two people who loved each other” (ch.103)?
I’m just confused with his logic...like, he seems to acknowledge that Yuusaku turned out differently than himself because his brother had parents who loved each other, and he didn’t, that he’s “lacking something fundamental.” So...why does he continue to believe that “everyone is the same as [him]” (ch.165)? I know he doesn’t WANT to think he’s different, so he wants to believe “everyone’s the same deep down” (ch.243) and before he kills Yuusaku he says “whether or not your parents love you doesn’t cause any difference at all in what a person becomes” (ch.243), but after he killed him, and his father still didn’t love him, it showed Ogata that, basically, yeah, they turned out differently because one lacked love from his parents and the other didn’t, and he even says that, so why does he insist everyone is the same as him? Am I missing something with his reasoning?
Welcome in the club of those who like Ogata as a character!
He’s undoubtedly one of the most interesting in the story and one of the hardest to figure up.
In regard to your question we don’t have a canon answer but, for me, his words need to be read in context and not as an extreme generalization WE ARE ALL EXACTLY THE SAME as Ogata is clearly aware we’re the same only on certain things and on other things WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT.
We know he’s aware of our differences, not just only because he acknowledged himself as a child lacking something, or because he knows he has characteristics other don’t have and viceversa (he can shoot, Sugimoto can’t, Koito is a spoiled, beloved rich prince, he’s poor and without family love) but also for bits like the one in which he acknowledged HE couldn’t do it (meaning someone else could).
‘Yappari ore de wa dame ka, umaku ikan monda na.’
やっぱり俺では駄目か、うまくいかんもんだな
Tumblr media
Of course though, although humans are all different among them, they also share many traits in common and it’s to those traits he’s referring when he says others are the same as him.
So to better dig into all this let’s look at what he says.
‘Minna ore to onaji hazu dasu.’
みんな俺と同じはずだす
Lit: “Everyone should be the same as me” though I’ve been told in this contest it means more “I believe everyone is the same as me”. [Chap 165]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In this bit Ogata is not saying ‘everyone is the same’, just that people doesn’t feel guilty when killing people in the same way as he doesn’t.
The first thing to note is that in the manga we see that, as Ogata says so his image is covered by a swirling screen which Noda uses to point out how a character is inside himself not as calm as he looks on the outside but is haunted by swirling emotions.
So, although Ogata looks calm on the outside, this topic actually haunts him on the inside... and Noda confirms this in in chap 243, when Ogata asks confirmation to Usami.
Tumblr media
You don’t ask confirmation of something you’re confident about, which means Ogata doesn’t feel so confident about the whole ‘nobody feels guilty’, in fact he asks confirmation to Usami.
There’s a really old post I made in relation to Ogata’s words but GK actually digs a lot in how everyone feels guilty but everyone also copes with guilt in different ways, the most common being ‘suppressing it’.
Ogata, as a child, killed his own mother in the fruitless attempt to bring his father back to her and had to cope with what he had done from a very young age which taught him, better than to other, how to suppress that feeling.
The story clearly hints he feels guilty for having killed Yuusaku yet Ogata is in full denial about it.
The story also has plenty of people in full denial about it. What Yuusaku is missing in his picture of ‘everyone feels guilty’ is that soldiers have to survive it or they would crumble after their first kill and unable to continue fighting and Yuusaku playing the pure icon is nowhere near enough.
Ogata is surrounded by people who’re taught by the army itself to suppress their guilt.
Sugimoto didn’t invent his belief his enemies were ‘bad, heartless people’ this was what was taught to soldiers.
Tumblr media
Ogata takes people’s copying mechanisms against feeling guilty at face value, assuming they’re not copying mechanisms but the truth of those people. He sees them not as people trying to fight guilt by suppressing it, but as people not feeling it... with good reasons or he should face he too is suppressing his guilt and therefore should also face feeling guilty.
That’s where his belief steems and why it’s shaky, because it’s based on a lie people tell themselves to survive... but ironically this makes them all (or most of them all) the same. They’re all copying with guilt and trying to suppress it by denying it in various different ways.
Very likely part of Ogata’s story arc will include how he’ll be forced to accept he actually regrets what he did, and if he’s denying it is only because he’s not ready to face his own guilt.
Going on.
‘Omae datte ore to onaji hazuda’
お前だって俺と同じはずだ
Lit: “You too should be the same as me” and yes, it’s the same construct as the previous so this too means “I believe you too are the same as me”. [Chap 187]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here Ogata is talking of something different by what he talked previously. Here he’s not talking about guilt but about how everyone can kill if he has the right motivation, and one of the saddest things in the world is he’s right.
The world isn’t like a fairy tale, with people cut into two factions, the ones who’re good and would never be able to do something wrong and the ones who’re bad and can only do wrong.
There are many shades of grey and the hardest thing to swallow is that with the right motive, we can do more or less everything.
Of course ‘the right motive’ is a very broad concept.
There are those terrible people who do it for the lowest motives, racism, greed, hate, boredom, religion... but there’s also who would do it because he’s enlisted in an army, or in self defence, or to protect another, or in a moment of point break rage, out of revenge, in desperation, under the belief they’re stopping the pain of the person they’re killing (euthanasia) and so on.
It’s something my psychology teacher warned us about, how actually, given the proper motivation which vary from person to person, in the right setting which again wary from person to person, we can end up doing terrible things we wouldn’t do in normal circumstances... and that’s why believing ‘I would NEVER do this’ is actually counterproductive.
You’ve to be aware there’s always the risk in the future you could do something at the present you know you’ll loathe doing, and the best way to still stop yourself when that time will come is to be aware of how that time can come and prepare yourself to fight it.
Awareness you might be weak and preparation to face such weakness is your last defence line to stop yourself.
Anyway Ogata believes what would make Asirpa tick is a wish for revenge, which was really popular back then and on which Sugimoto had counted as well when he has involved her in the gold hunt.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Asirpa didn’t want to take part to the gold hunt nor didn’t want to kill, Sugimoto said she however wants her father’s killer dead and she could have him killed by proxy, by turning his life useless to his captors, without her having to dirty her hands killing him (or the convicts as Sugimoto planned to do that by himself).
As you can see both Sugimoto and Ogata believed AVENGING HER FATHER would be a powerful motivator for Asirpa and, in Sugimoto’s case, she’ll accept to take part to the gold hunt while in Ogata’s case she’ll be seriously tempted to just do it. It’s to Asirpa’s credits she manages to restrain herself... but it’s interesting to see how later she’ll tell herself she’s ready to kill to protect Sugimoto...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...but then, when she considers doing it to protect herself, it’s the memory of almost killing Ogata what stay her hand.
Tumblr media
In short it’s the memory of the sense of guilt she felt in that circumstance what stopped her... and that’s why soldiers were taught to suppress that guilt, because they should kill again and again.
On the other side what’s Yuusaku’s reason for not killing?
His father told him not to.
It’s not that he found it morally wrong or something, it’s just his father told him not to. There’s to wonder if, had Hanazawa told him the opposite, to kill as many as he could, Yuusaku would have been a killing machine.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There’s not deep refusal of killing what moves Yuusaku when he refuses to kill, it’s just obedience to his father’s words. Yuusaku doesn’t say words he had come to believe because he had thought about them, he’s merely quoting Hanazawa. This is probably why Yuusaku doesn’t manage to reach or understand Ogata back then, because there’s no understanding in what he says, just acceptance what his father said has to be true.
But I’m digressing.
So to sum up.
If you ask me Ogata isn’t contraddicting himself.
He’s aware people are different on some matters and the same on others because people are deliciously complicate like that.
Ogata is also right on the fact we all have the potential to kill in the right situation and for the right reason but messes up on the guilt part because he’s working with wrong information about himself and the others and therefore fails to understand this part.
However, since guilt had seemed to be one of the theme tied to his character the discussion might come up again and he might come to understand this better... or Noda might decide to explore why he’ll never overcome his maladaptive copying mechanisms and acknowledge he felt guilty.
We’ll see. I hope I was of some help! Thank you for your ask!

Lineup Lamentations - GW5
Our Transfers, Captains, and Starting 11s for the week!
WALSH
TRANSFERS:
OUT: Laporte - rip
IN: Otamendi - god help me
Unfortunately I was unable to save off the back of the WC which never feels great, but hopefully making a lateral swap here which frees up 1m to boot.
I don't really imagine this going well, since I have slated Ota for a while, and think he's more or less a red card shout / absolute shit house player generally speaking, but here we are.
If it's a transfer waiting to happen, so be it, but the bottom line is I still want a share in City's defense, I don't trust Everton for cleans still, and something didn't feel quite right going all the way down to a Burnley guy in a spot on my team which I realistically need to start week in week out... Until Pep shows us that he is willing to play anyone not named Otamendi as the LCB with Laporte out then I will just hope and pray he doesn't kill anyone (which would thus kill himself with a ban) and doesn't die. Whatever. Cue Dinho and Schtones at CB tomorrow.
Post international break GW is usually a complete disaster crisis gameweek so I am just simply trying to brace myself for it ahead of time.
GK:
Pope (bha)
Pope is looking good in this moment with the good run of fixtures incoming. He's been just a bit below average with only one return through four but the underlying metrics are looking good for him and hopefully he's just a long term hold guy I don't have to worry about.
DEF:
Alexander-Arnold & Robertson (NEW)
Trent and Robbo with the home banker okay lets go Livp. Early game so much of my mood for the ensuing foots will be decided by these boys. Realistically a win to nil at home against a bad bus feels like a reasonable expectation for this one so hopefully it comes to fruition.
Otamendi (nor)
New nightmare Ota is straight in, obv. Somewhat tricky away fixture for a clean but it's still City so he'll just be an auto start every game until I remove him.
Lundstram (SOU)
Finally, Lundstram gets his first go in my squad home to Soton.
I'm going to be rotating him in and out over the near term so we'll see if this is the beginning of something beautiful between us or the beginning of a fraught relationship that will lead to me hating him for the rest of my life. Time will tell.
MID:
Salah (NEW) & Sterling & De Bruyne (nor)
The trio of Mo Raz and Kev remain and likely will do for some time. Really nothing to say about these three other than they are good. Spots I don't really need to think about at this time.
McGinn (WHU)
Rounding out midfield is someone who is not really that good in McGinn.
Good home fixture with West Ham rolling up so hopefully he is able to get in there. If he looks bad and/or they look bad then I might fuck him off.
He's on a short leash, that's for sure, as he was really the one shit place I compromised on my WC team since I wanted to plump for Laporte... With that money freed up now, no other problems in my team, and a new price bracket open to me... I might fuck him off even if he does return. Who is to say?
FWD:
Pukki (MCI) & Haller (avl)
Pukki and Haller the two amigos seem like just a couple great value picks and happy to have them.
Great fixture for Haller and he might slowly but surely present himself as a long term hold. Stats and eye test are there with him not to mention the price is right - think he's a really tidy option.
Pukki has a tough fixture but as Farke showed us the lightning and thunder in GW1 at Anfield who knows what's what with them. Obviously they are completely decimated by injury, but I need to see multiple bad attacking performances before I begin to worry here.
CAP:
Sterling (nor)
Going back to the Raz well again. Fool me once, shame on me, fool me twice, fucking hell fuck me.
Still don't feel confident enough capping Kevin over Raz, and probably won't do all season, if I'm being honest here.
I think Norwich with no fit defensive players (Farke's words, not mine) and the style they employ is not a comparable fixture to a Newcastle bus so I didn't really think about Mo this weekend.
Counting on Raz to not have 0 shot attempts again this week. Obviously the trip to Ukraine midweek for UCL is a thing that is happening, but whatever.
Trying to predict how Pep hands out minutes is like (insert funny thing here) and I don't really want to find some psychological line to talk me into Raz will play 53 minutes only to see him haul and play 88.
Been there before, not trying to go there again.
ALON
TRANSFERS:
OUT: Deulofeu
IN:  Che Adams
Gerry dropped all the way down to 6.2 so there was a relatively small and unimpressive pool of dudes for me to choose from for this punty spot in my team.
Realistically this is a one or maybe two week punt before I pop my Wildcard next week or the week after... Che has actually insanely good expected stats which is nothing to scoff at even though the goals have not flowed at all...
The greater skill to have and the harder skill to find is to keep getting off the high xG shots rather then to be finishing at a higher rate above your xG, if that makes sense... I hope I’ve worded that clearly...
Anyway, TLDR: Che is doing stuff, Southampton are an attacking team in an attacking setup, Ralph is good I like Ralph, and Soton have the fixtures over the next two. And that’s why I went Che.
COME ON CHE!!!
GK:
Ederson (nor)
City gotta clean their shit up a bit if they’re gonna be a 20+ cleans type of dominant force again this season but yeah of course I back them to do exactly that.
Eddy’s been mostly really good this season and I feel comfy with him.
DEF:
van Dijk (NEW)
It’s time for rotation to begin for the top teams... feels good to have the safety of VVD who is a rock. And this clean should be straightforward for Liverpool.
Digne (bou)
I’m a little nervy about Everton’s defending and their ability to limit good chances... Digne kinda papers over the cracks with his terrific attacking output, but if they start looking like cleans are going to be a rarity this season then even his attacking numbers will not make him worth the 6.0+ million.
Maitland-Niles (wat)
Ainsley AKA Ashley was rightfully so very deep on my bench for liv TOT and he put up one pointers in each of those so we’re fine.
In his two starts for me (GW1 and 2) he got twelve and two puntos respectively so he’s still been a sneaky great guy for me thus far... Arsenal’s very long very good run of fixtures starts now but Bellerin also is coming back soon so time is running out.
Hoping Arsenal can do a job and keep out the Quique Sanchez Flores bus this week and maybe he’ll sneak another attacking return. Come on Ashley.
Emerson (wol)
Starting Emmy here because Wolves suck at attacking and Chelsea could still keep a clean and Emerson could still get an attacking return who knows?
Rudi looks like he’s back this week which is a huge upgrade and Kante will be back soon which is another huge upgrade but yeah, not feeling great about this pick.
Also Emerson’s injury news doesn’t look great for me but if he doesn’t play I have Söy coming in in a cleanable fixture at Old Trafford so not too bad.
MID:
Salah (NEW) & Sterling & De Bruyne (nor)
Doing the trendy thing and just grouping these sexy fucks together because they’re all awesome and they have good fixtures and that’s all you need to know about that.
Mount (wol)
Everyone knows the deal with Mount. Looks great, takes a lot of shots, presses like a maniac, on frees and corners, it’s just good stuff. At his price it’s just good.
FWD:
Pukki (MCI)
Pukki in a yikes fixture here we go... Norwich are so fucked up and injured I don’t know I definitely don’t expect any points here but maybe they get one or two good counters or maybe Pukki takes a pen or something. He’s good enough to roll out there, for sure.
Adams (shu)
I said all I needed to say about lord Che in the transfers section.
CAP:
De Bruyne (nor)
I guess everyone has Sterling and a lot of people have Kun and understandably they’re garnering most of the captaincies that I’m seeing around the block.
Kevin, for me, so far this season is on a completely new level that we haven’t really seen from him before. His expected stats are out of control and he’s also got the seventh highest Fantasy Goal Involvement percentage of all mids at 54% which is craaaazy high for a team like City.
For what it’s worth too in the past Pep has rode Kevin like a horse in the league and he’s not really ever been a rotation risk. I feel ~some~ percent safer of him starting these kinds of games before UCL then I do with the forwards.
Come on Kev treat me.
RANDOM SLACKER OF THE WEEK: GNAR
The words of Random Slacker are not officially endorsed by this website nor any employees of FML FPL LLC.
TRANSFERS:
OUT: Laporte
IN: Otamendi
I don’t feel like I have too much choice in who to take out this week. Laporte having knee surgery and set to miss the rest of 2019 means he’s an absolute no brainer to axe.
Who to replace him with is a much more interesting question.
I’ve been playing 5 at the back all season and it hasn’t worked out as well as I’d hoped so far. But I do feel like I’ve been unlucky with Laporte’s injury and his missed clean sheet being the icing on the cake.
If I went for a cheapo like Lundstram, there aren’t many midfielders I’d be desperate to bring in with the spare cash, apart from KDB, who is out of my reach anyway. So I’ll be continuing my Heavy D strategy, bringing in Otamendi, who is 5.4 and nailed on in a top 2 defence.
GK:
Leno (wat)
New manager for Watford, so an inevitable new manager bounce.
I have Heaton (WHU) as a rotation option, but the odds point to Leno for the clean sheet, although it’s quite marginal.
DEF:
Digne (bou)
I didn’t watch their 3-2 victory against Wolves but I heard Digne looked defensively dodgy. I did watch their 2-0 defeat to Villa the previous week, and while Everton looked completely toothless and unconvincing, Digne at least offered a bit of attacking threat. I’m not expecting a clean sheet here, but Digne has 9 chances created this season. For a defender, that’s second only to…
Alexander-Arnold (NEW)
14 chances created – 14, compared to Digne’s 9; Trent absolutely wipes the floor.
I took a hit last week to upgrade VVD to Trent and I got an immediate positive net return from it. As well as his excellent attacking prospects, Liverpool also have the best clean sheet odds this week by quite a distance.
Robertson (NEW)
Very good chance of a clean sheet this week and although he’s no Alexander-Arnold, he also offers a very good goal threat.
Maybe I’m guilty of picking and choosing stats here, but out of defenders, Robertson’s 2nd for touches in the box this season (12), which is quite a biggie for me when assessing players’ attacking potential.
Otamendi & Zinchenko (nor)
Welcome to the team, Ota.
With Laporte injured, I expect Ota to nail down a place in the first team. Enough said.
Zinchenko has a bit of a Mendy threat looming, but I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it. For now, another well priced Man City defender who will trickle points as long as he starts. Lacks the explosiveness of KDB (yeah he’s explosive now) or Aguero, but for 5.5, I’ll take a 6 pointer every 2 weeks for sure.
MID:
Salah (NEW) & Sterling (nor)
Grouping these two together because there’s just not that much to say. The two best players in the game don’t need writing about, especially when their fixtures are as easy as this. The only question is which one to captain.
Mount (wol)
14 shots in total this season, 7 on target, both are the highest of any other midfielder. But with only 5 of those shots coming from inside the box and an xG of 0.82, perhaps he’s a bit opportunistic and has been a bit fortunate.
Mount still feels like a bit of an unknown quantity to me and I haven’t watched too much Chelsea this season, but he’s well priced and there are plenty of other options in his bracket, so happy to see how he gets on over the next few.
FWD:
Jota (CHE)
I always like to plan my ideal transfers a few weeks ahead.
Before the last gameweek started, I was planning Jota to Barnes. Unfortunately Laporte got injured, so my priority changed and Jota stays with me for one more week. And Barnes is now injured anyway, so maybe it’s a blessing in disguise.
Jota is a funny one. He’s scoring for fun in the Europa League, but looking absolute garbage the following Sunday in the Premier League. He was in the squad, but played 0 minutes in Portugal’s 2 games over the IB. I feel like Jota might redeem himself.
Pukki (MCI)
The main man for Norwich.
If they score, there’s a very good chance that Pukki will be involved.
As an Ota + Zinc owner though I’m kind of hoping they don’t.
CAP:
Salah (NEW)
A real coin toss.
Salah and Sterling are both fantastic options this week, like they are every week.
So far, every gameweek I’ve picked the lowest scoring one out of the two. In week 3, I went against my instinct and went for Raz over Mo, which backfired. This week, my instinct is telling me Mo so I’m just going with it.

USA v GER She Believes Cup 2017 - Hot Takes
First off, thanks to Fox Soccer for not bothering to put a clock on your livestream, that was tiresome. Secondly, slightly less to say about this match simply because I was watching it with someone so didn't take detailed time notes, also, no clock.
I wasn't expecting this match to go as well as it did for the USA. There were two main reasons for that, the offseason break and the three back experiment. US players have had a bit of a rest, which is physically great for them, however in terms of team communication and recent psychological pressure they're probably a little rusty. In contrast, most of the German players have been through Euro matches recently, lots of friendlies and are playing competitive club games across the European leagues. As for the three back, it's not because I think the three back is fundamentally a bad strategy but rather that the US is still learning it. The last friendlies we watched showed a team getting used to the new formation with significant defensive gaps. I expected some narrowing of those, but was honestly impressed with the level to which the formation has been worked on and is adapting.
XI Not a great number of surprises from the roster here, although I was surprised (pleasantly) to see Press get the start with Williams. Morgan has been out sick in France though, so I'm not getting my hopes up that this is the rise of Christen Press just yet. Germany's roster was pretty much as I would have expected with Marozsan, Popp, Mittag and Maier making appearances.
Tactics Jill Ellis' vision of the 3 back goes a little like this: 3 at the back, high pressure through midfield and on up, compete for every ball, wear down the opponent until mistakes happen and score. I'd say this was a pretty accurate description of game, I'll come back to that under execution. What was interesting here was to see this against a German side that played a more traditional 4-4-2, at times pushing up into a 4-3-3. Germany on the whole played I would say the more defensively of the two teams. Tactically it seemed that they were prioritising a solid and numbers heavy defence relying on quick counters to break past the US midfield and into that vulnerable back three. After the US goal we started to see this push to a more traditional building attack through the midfield, which was when I felt they had better quality chances. The 3 back experiment here was I would say successful, not just in terms of how the team executed it, but also in terms of a tactical response to a strong defensive team. The US still remained outnumbered at times in the German defensive third, but was at least able to commit enough up top to minimise this to some degree. We still saw a prevalence of the US trying to break up the wing, with Heath and Dunn deployed there, and both were asked to take on a fair amount of defensive duty as part of that. Overall, a calm three back seemed to provide the solution to the bunker style gameplay Jill is trying to combat, and allowed the US to move past their more traditional 'punt and hope for Abby Wambach' approach.
Tactical Execution The USA was definitely a little rusty. There were a fair number of turnovers and unforced errors. In midfield particularly it seemed like there was difficulty completing. Part of that is to do with the number of German players consistently in midfield and defending. Germany spent a large majority of their time in their own half, stacking midfield against the US. It was also clearly a wet pitch, however there were also a number of times passes landed right at the feet of German players. If the USA are to be successful in a 3-5-2 and want to build through the midfield they're going to need to retain possession more than they did here.
I enjoyed seeing the increase in composure on the ball from the USA. Rather than consistently press straight into an attack there was a lot of movement around the back and midfield before distributing up into the attack. This composure also came into play on the counter opportunities when the ball turned over. In previous friendlies we saw the USA fall back into a 'throw it all into the attacking third' approach to turnovers, where they would get the ball and immediately sprint down the pitch on the attack. With a solid 4 back the consequences of losing possession on this kind of run were to some degree limited, when they tried to do this in a three back we saw a consistent number of turnovers where the opponent countered the counter and left the defense exposed and with gaps. In this match we saw a good amount more patience, where once regaining the ball in their defensive third the USA took the time to build the attack back up, moving slowly as a unit up the pitch and ensuring that defense remained in position with channels down the wing covered by Heath and Dunn.
Speaking of wings, whoever was commentating on Fox Soccer spent a lot of time suggesting the US run down them with the ball, but what I saw was a German side that was eager to box the wingers in. Every time the ball would get out towards Heath or Dunn they would be pounced on. The USA is known for playing up the wings, wide and open and this was clearly something the Germans had come ready to counter. Going forwards I'd like to see the midfield work through the centre more if possible, although granted I'd have kept the ball away from Maroszan too.
Player Performance - USA I'll break down by positioning here, starting with defenders. Naeher was excellent and I think the #1 GK spot is hers to lose at this point.  I was impressed with Long, it's clear she's been working on her defensive instincts and while there were one or two moments where she was beaten 1 v 1 or didn't drop back swiftly enough she did a good job here. One point with this was her comfort with staying back from the attack, previously we'd seen her push further into midfield, and in this game she was mindful to stay back and direct the midfield play as distributer and lever for the attack. The other defender I spent a lot of time watching was Short. I admit to being confused about Casey Short, as a Red Stars supporter I like her, and nobody can question her defensive instincts and speed at the back, however as soon as she starts pushing up I feel like her distribution is off. Too often she would pass into space, to an opponent or out of play. The general consensus seems to be that she's a great fullback, but honestly I think when you have players like Krieger available, who have good defensive skills as well as strong passing completion and interception rates they’re a better fit here.
Midfield was probably the weakest for the US in this match. They were to some degree stifled by the Germans whose forwards weren’t exerting much pressure up top but generally hanging back in midfield to give them a numerical advantage. Brian and Mewis were solid, but Mewis in particular seemed stifled by the opposition, though we did see some good evidence of how her physical presence can be useful against a physically tough team. Out on the wings Heath and Dunn were completely pinned for most of the game. Heath particularly ended up doing a large portion of defensive work, which she carried out well. It’s always surprising to see Heath drop far back, since we’re so used to seeing her up top for PTFC and in the more traditional US 4-4-2. I think she did a really good job here and I was also impressed with the set pieces she took, her corners were absolutely on target even though they failed to convert.
Up top with the forwards I think we all know who i’m going to shout out. Taking off my CP23 stan hat for a second I still think this legitimately was an excellent performance from her. One area that Press is weak on is physicality and easy dispossession. If a defender catches her with the ball and is able to close on her, she will generally end up losing that 1 v 1. She hasn’t historically had the gritty barge through approach we’ve seen with say Morgan or Leroux. This game however her physical presence was greatly increased. We saw a lot of pressure being exerted on the German defence, and a number of very physical contentions for the ball. At one point two German defenders close from either side and Christen pushes through them both and retains possession. That physical presence is exactly what has been missing and it was a pleasure to see it displayed here. Work rate for Press was also impressive, and there were a number of good corners forced by her plays. WIlliams had an okay game, although I’d like to see a bit more composure on the ball and better timing of runs from her I think her and Press work well together up top. Lloyd in midfield/forward whatever her actual role is these days was pretty quiet, generally busy with Maroszan but there were definitely a few moments that it seemed her touch was slightly off, not her strongest game.
Substitutions wise, I would have liked to see more, but I understand the purpose was to see the ability of the squad to maintain high energy high pressure throughout a full 90. Horan and Pugh did well, I was impressed by both of them in terms of their ability to go 1 v 1 with defenders and smoke them. Both had a number of moments where they caught their opponent on the back foot and got around them. Interesting to see Horan in a true forward role too rather than her usual AM. She’s been pretty good in AM for the team, but often gets complaints for problems with retaining possession. I’m not super convinced that’s valid, but it’s interesting to consider her as a successor to Lloyd’s pseudo forward midfield role. An attacking minded physical presence that hangs slightly behind the strikers. Morgan barely got a chance to hit her stride which was a shame for her.
Overall GER
For me Maier was the standout here for Germany. Mittag seemed to be dealing with some kind of niggling injury and Maroszan was kept busy by Lloyd in midfield. Overall Germany did what Germany does best, which is operate as a single well oiled machine. I suspect if they had played more aggressively in the first half they might have got some more promising shots on goal. They were clearly outpaced by the end of the second half and struggling physically against a more athletic US side.

Arsenal attacker, Liverpool wonderkid: The Class of 99 set to become football's next superstars
There appears to be more of an emphasis on young, promising footballers in today’s beautiful game than ever before. Clubs of all shapes and sizes are always on the look out for the next big thing, not just to boost their fortunes off the pitch but their bank balances off it.
We’ve already seen teenage sensations go for astronomical fees in recent transfer windows, not least Kylian Mbappe’s mega money switch from Monaco to PSG, and as the business of football continues to grow there are bound to be many more deals just like the young Frenchman’s.
With that in mind, here are some of the outstanding talents born in the year 1999 who we believe will go on to footballing greatness…
Matthijs De Ligt
D.O.B.: 12.08.1999
Current Club: Ajax Amsterdam
Nationality: Netherlands
Current Market Value: £45million
Position: CB
Matthijs De Ligt is no unknown quantity, having already featured in the youngest ever side to play a Europa League final against Manchester United at the age of 17.
He has since not only become one of the most sought-after centre-backs, but one of the most-sought after talents in the world. The defender has risen through the ranks and even become the youngest captain in Ajax history.
His performances in the Champions League have definitely caught the eye of many, and most experts agree that De Ligt’s future will be decided in the next summer transfer window. In today’s market, who knows how high his price tag could go.
Alexander Isak
D.O.B.: 21.09.1999
Current Club: Borussia Dortmund
Nationality: Sweden
Current Market Value: £4.05million
Position: CF
Some pundits have called him the next Zlatan Ibrahimovic after the tall Swede broke onto the scene at the age of 16. He became a regular starter for Swedish side AIK Solna, and subsequently became the youngest player to score in the Swedish first division.
His performances did not go unnoticed, with Borussia securing his signature during the winter 2017 transfer window. Isak went on to win the 2017 DFB Cup with Dortmund, but is yet to feature for the first team this season.
Justin Kluivert
D.O.B.: 05.05.1999
Current Club: AS Roma
Nationality: Netherlands
Current Market Value: £13.5million
Position: LW, RW
Having Kluivert as your surname is no easy task, especially when Kluivert Sr. scored 90 goals in 182 appearances for FC Barcelona.
Justin Kluivert has, however, made a name for himself, featuring in the extremely young Ajax Amsterdam side that played against Manchester United in the 2017 Europa League final.
In November 2017, the forward recorded his first hat-trick in the Dutch top flight, something his father was never able to do. In the summer of 2018, he agreed a move to AS Roma, where he has scored once and set up thrice in Serie A this season.
Gianluigi Donnarumma
D.O.B.: 25.02.1999
Current Club: AC Milan
Nationality: Italy
Current Market Value: £36million
Position: GK
Considered by many to be Gianluigi Buffon’s successor for Italy, Gianluigi Donnarumma burst onto the scene at age 16. He became AC Milan’s youngest regular starting player, playing his first season in the number one spot at just 17 years old.
Donnarumma’s meteoric rise has been well documented, with many big clubs showing their interest in signing the young Italian. Donnarumma has performed well for a struggling AC Milan side, who have failed to secure European football every season.
Donnarumma agreed to a contract extension in 2017 but whether he will do so again remains questionable. A move to one of Europe’s biggest clubs seems far more likely.
Kai Havertz
D.O.B.: 11.06.1999
Current Club: Bayer Leverkusen
Nationality: Germany
Current Market Value: £49.5million
Position: CAM, CM, RM
The young German turned many heads with his strong performances as a 17-year-old in 2016. Havertz has since managed to break into a strong Bayer Leverkusen side, who secured European football for the third straight season last time out.
Havertz’s performances have also grabbed the attention of Germany head coach Joachim Löw, having earned his first cap for his national team following a disastrous World Cup.
Havertz also earned his first start for Germany in a friendly against Russia ahead of Germany’s UEFA Nations League clash with the Netherlands. His performance drew comparisons with Mesut Ozil and Munich defender Joshua Kimmich even went as far as to say that “Havertz would be a good fit for us at Bayern.”
With his track record, it seems only a matter of time before the top clubs come knocking.
Dan-Axel Zagadou
D.O.B.: 03.06.1999
Current Club: Borussia Dortmund
Nationality: France
Current Market Value: £7.2million
Position: CB, LB
The young French centre-back started his career in Paris Saint-Germain’s youth academy, where he was promoted from the reserve squad at just 17 years old.
Catching the eye of Borussia Dortmund’s scouts, Zagadou was signed by the German club in 2017. The defender received his debut in October 2018, during which he scored and was sent off, leaving a mixed impression. He’s since gone on to make nine appearances in the Bundesliga, and three in the Champions League.
Reiss Nelson
D.O.B.: 10.12.1999
Current Club: TSG 1899 Hoffenheim
Nationality: England
Current Market Value: £6.75million
Position: RW, CAM, LW
Reiss Nelson impressed Arsene Wenger during his time in the Arsenal youth academy, regularly playing above his age group. His performances were enough to earn his first professional contract just after his 17th birthday.
It was during the 2017/18 season that Nelson made regular showings for Arsenal’s first team, featuring in the Community Shield, League Cup and Europa League. At the end of last season, he was named the PL2 Player of the Year.
Nelson signed a long-term contract at Arsenal in August 2018 before agreeing to a year-long loan spell with Bundesliga club 1899 Hoffenheim. Whilst at Hoffenheim, Nelson has been highly effective, both in the Bundesliga and the Champions League.
Ben Woodburn
D.O.B.: 15.10.1999
Current Club: Sheffield United FC
Nationality: Wales
Current Market Value: £4.5million
Position: LW, CAM, RW
Ben Woodburn is another talent who also broke multiple “Youngest to…” records. Having been fast tracked through Liverpool’s U16s to the U18s, Woodburn’s performances impressed Jürgen Klopp so much that he was invited to train regularly with the senior squad.
After successful non-competitive first team appearances, Woodburn was given a professional contract in November 2016. Following this, the forward became Liverpool’s third-youngest debutant, as well as Liverpool’s youngest ever goal-scorer after netting in an EFL Cup quarter-final.
The following season, Woodburn regularly appeared for the U19 and reserve squads, occasionally coming on a substitute in the Premier League. He then went out on loan to Sheffield United ahead of the 2018/19 season, to gain experience and playing time.
Mile Svilar
D.O.B.: 27.08.1999
Current Club: SL Benfica
Nationality: Belgium
Current Market Value: £2.25million
Position: GK
The young Belgian-Serbian goalkeeper started his career at RSC Anderlecht, where he came up to the senior team as third choice keeper as a 17-year-old.
The following season, Portuguese champions SL Benfica signed Svilar on a five-year-deal. He then went on to break records in the Champions League, most notably becoming the youngest goalkeeper to play in the Champions League (a record held by Iker Casillas before him).
He also grabbed headlines for the best and worst reasons during the Round of 16 match against Manchester United. He became the youngest keeper to save a penalty, as well as the youngest player to score an own goal in the competition.
Evan Ndicka
D.O.B.: 20.08.1999
Current Club: Eintracht Frankfurt
Nationality: France
Current Market Value: £5.4million
Position: CB, LB, CDM
Before this season, Evan Ndicka was an unknown quantity, little more than an unproven talent. However, Eintracht Frankfurt were willing to put money on the table for him, leaving many pundits with raised eyebrows.
Ndicka, however, has fulfilled his expectations and more. Following a rocky start to the season in which Frankfurt crashed spectacularly out of the DFB Cup as defending champions against fourth tier SSV Ulm, Ndicka has since stabilised the shaky Frankfurt defence, helping to keep the club challenging for the European spots in the Bundesliga.

Brighton 1-5 Liverpool: Reds cruise back into the top four

Brighton 1-5 Liverpool: Reds cruise back into the top four
There were several moments during this vicious exhibition of schoolyard bullying when Jurgen Klopp would randomly burst into a grin at the sheer brutality of it all. How he enjoyed watching his three little assassins make such a big mess of Brighton.
They were exceptional, that trident of Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah, who had one of those rare days when he did not score but still ticked the box of an excellent performance.
Instead, this one was more about Firmino, who scored the second and third goals, and Coutinho, who made the first for Emre Can and netted a laughably good fourth for himself, before delivering the late shot that Lewis Dunk headed into his own net.

At times, frequently in fact, those three men produced counter-attacking football that will not be bettered anywhere this season. The second and third goals, in particular, were items of great beauty and speed, delivered at a ground where Brighton had not lost since the opening match of the season, when Manchester City were in town. Even Pep Guardiola’s side only managed two that day.
How fitting, then, that only City can currently match Liverpool’s form, given Klopp’s side have now won five and drawn one of the six league games played since they were battered 4-1 by Tottenham in October. The lesser-heralded factor of that run is that even their defence, which is normally so shaky, has been behaving itself, with only three conceded since the Spurs hammering.
They are light on numbers at the back, which will eventually become a problem if they do not reinforce correctly, but they can have no concerns about the depth or strength of their attack. None whatsoever.
Roberto Firmino scores Liverpool’s second goal just 79 seconds after their opener following Philippe Coutinho’s cross
Firmino made no mistake as Liverpool doubled their lead very shortly after moving in front as Brighton were left stunned
Firmino (left) celebrates with Mohamed Salah and Philippe Coutinho after rounding off a sweeping move for the second goal
Firmino scored his 10th goal of the season at Brighton and marked it by pointing skywards at the Amex Stadium
Firmino fires home Liverpool’s third goal early in the second-half as they took complete command of the contest
Salah has 17 goals in all competitions and three assists, including the pass for Firmino’s second; Firmino has 11 goals and four; Coutinho has six and seven. All are under 6ft but they are monsters and they mauled all in their path here, while Daniel Sturridge and Sadio Mane sat watching from the bench. No wonder Klopp was having a ball, even if his words afterwards were more subdued than his actions on the side.
‘Did I enjoy it? Not really, not all the time,’ he said.
‘In our calmer moments we are a really good team but we need to carry on. I am more interested in the next game (against Spartak Moscow on Wednesday).’
He added: ‘We need the points in the Premier League and we want to stay as close as possible to the teams in front. We cannot get them immediately but we want to be in a position where we are close.’
Firmino gets a hug from forward partner Mohamed Salah after scoring his second goal of the afternoon at the Amex Stadium
Firmino turns and salutes the travelling Liverpool fans after scoring their third goal of the game shortly after half-time
Liverpool’s three-goal advantage lasted mere seconds, however, as Glenn Murray scored for Brighton from the penalty spot
Shane Duffy reacts for a penalty as the ball flashes through a crowded penalty area and referee Graham Scott awarded it
Anthony Knockaert ran in and grabbed the ball from the net after Murray placed his penalty past Simon Mignolet
Regardless of Klopp’s tone, they are close to everyone bar City and they have the benefit of momentum, despite the concerns before this game about a makeshift backline that looked desperately vulnerable.
Among Klopp’s six changes to the side that beat Stoke in midweek – he has made 54 alterations this season, which by some distance is a Premier League high – was a three-man defence including a pair of repurposed midfielders in Can and Georginio Wijnaldum. It was peculiar to see Klopp go with three centre-halves when the thigh injury to Joel Matip and the sickness of Ragnar Klavan meant he barely had scope to go with one, but they were not exposed here.
There was one rough moment on 16 minutes, when Glenn Murray botched his shot but, beyond that, Brighton offered nothing until their goal in the second half at 3-0 down.
Coutinho scores from a free-kick for Liverpool’s fourth goal three minutes from the end on the south coast

Liverpool winger Salah leads his team onto the attack during the opening minutes on the south coast
Brighton forward Izzy Brown, currently on loan from Chelsea, tries to find a way around captain Henderson in the midfield
Liverpool, by contrast, were brutally effective. The first goal, on the half hour, was basic enough, a corner from Coutinho and a header from Can.
The second, about a minute later, was just delightful in its speed, with Salah surging 30 yards to the edge of Brighton’s area and then rolling out left to Coutinho. His first-time ball across the box was the eye-catching element of the move, and Firmino wrapped it up with the one-touch finish at the far post.
The third in the 49th minute was equally wonderful given the absurd speed of Liverpool’s counter after Simon Mignolet had made an excellent stop to block a volley from Murray. Just 14 seconds later, they had scored, with Firmino playing to Salah, who then skipped by a couple of challenges before sending Firmino one-on-one with Mat Ryan after the Brazilian had run 60 yards for a return pass. The striker buried it.
Liverpool’s forward Firmino finds himself involved in an early aerial skirmish with Brighton pair Lewis Dunk and Duffy
Murray, the former Crystal Palace striker, misses a good opportunity to score for his side during the first-half
Liverpool’s Wijnaldum keeps close tabs on Brighton’s Pascal Gross during the opening stages of the match
Salah, wearing gold boots for the occasion, challenges for a 50-50 ball with Brighton defender Dunk, who later scored an OG
Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold attempts to stop Brighton’s Brown delivering a cross during the first-half
Murray pulled one back with a penalty, before Coutinho added a fourth with a free-kick of some genius. Liverpool’s analysts had spotted that Brighton’s walls jump at free-kicks so Coutinho kept it low. Superb.
The fifth came from a Coutinho run and shot that deflected in via Lewis Dunk’s head.
Asked if Liverpool were the best side Brighton have faced, Hughton said: ‘Yes. They gave us a harsh lesson.’
Bullying has never looked so good.

The LFC midfield parts like the red sea while slimani take the ball from a throw in and runs at the defense. He rifles it in the top right corner from the edge of the box.
80' Gray nearly makes it 3 after a sumptuous backheel from Slimani. His curling effort is tipped wide by Ward.
82' Looks like the Liverpool's player's head are gone. Leicester showboating now. Everyone's trying their luck now. Lose ball by Gomez, Leicester win it and Okazaki hits one fro far. Straight a t the GK.
83' Ox tries a crossfield ball, straight out for a throw in.
