4chan: The Internet’s Mos Eisley Cantina Takes Another Hit
In the chaotic world of online forums, 4chan stands out like a neon sign in a dark alley. Dubbed the “cesspool of the internet,” it has a reputation for being the lawless Doge City of the online world. This notorious imageboard has seen its fair share of craziness, and now, it’s down again—this time, apparently hacked. On April 14, 2025, users began reporting that 4chan was loading slowly. By…

i forget if i've mentioned this before on here, but when i was about 5 i was obsessed with monsters inc and watched it at least twice a week not because i especially liked it as a movie but simply because i was passionately in love with randall. and in fact the very first fanfiction i ever wrote was a monsters inc whump fanfiction about me finding randall in the swamp after he got beaten up with a shovel and tenderly nursing him back to health. all this to say i have been the person i am from an incredibly young age
#if memory serves the first internet forum i ever joined was a monsters inc fan forum#and i just remember there being one very odd middle aged lady on there who would get super aggressive whenever anyone disagreed with her#but almost everyone else in the forum was a child so she just wound up bullying a bunch of kids for no reason#wonder how she's doing these days

Folks talking about the weirdness of late 1990s/early 2000s forum culture usually focus on the macro-level stuff – the inter-forum beefs, the raids, etc. – but on a personal level they were often even more unhinged. Like, many popular forums had recurring issues with people putting on the persona of a Sickly Artist (often claiming to have a heart condition, though just as often the nature of their ailment would be left unspecified), building a following based on the idea that they were this gentle, tortured artistic genius who could kick the bucket any time, and eventually "dying", only to return a few weeks later in a different Sickly Artist persona and start the whole thing over again. Many of the worst offenders went through this cycle multiple times. Sometimes they weren't even real artists, and were simply misrepresenting someone else's art as their own, which was much easier to get away with because Google Image Search wasn't yet a thing.

There's this one scene in My Next Life As A Villainess: All Routes Lead To Doom! that I really like, and it's when Catarina has to pretend to be a villainess in a school play, and she nails it
I want a scene like that, but for Scum Villain's Self Saving System, where Shen Yuan has to act like a villain for some reason, and all the Peak Lords are like 'can he handle it? I know he used to be mean, but this Shen Qingqiu is completely incapable of being unkind.'
And then Shen Yuan gives a perfect Shen Jiu impression. Everyone is scared/horny, the only person unsurprised is Shang Qinghua who regularly deals with being verbally abused by Shen Yuan. Yue Qingyuan is crying tears of joy
Meanwhile Shen Yuan is unaware that he had awakened something in everyone
#sy 'gives perfect sj impression'#system: wtf! where was this earlier!!#meanwhile sqh is like 'yeah he was way meaner on internet forums'#shen yuan#shen qingqiu#shang qinghua#yue qingyuan#cang qiong mountain peak lords#mxtx#svsss#rzfzx#scum villain self saving system#ren zha fanpai zijiu xitong

Time to be Internet Cockroaches
So I am constantly in active rebellion of the centralized web. We're in a world where all of our online interactions happen on just a handful of sites (and this includes DIscord and Tumblr too).
SO I WANT TO REMIND FOLKS -- YOU CAN BUILD YOUR OWN STUFF, AND WHEN YOUR FRIENDS DO IT YOU SHOULD USE IT.
Now I know not everyone can pay for their own webhosting and setup their own stuff, but for those of us who can -- we should. When every major platform is at risk, we should be splintering out across the web and decentralizing as much as we can.
I host the Nerd & Tie [dot] Social forums for my friends and my stuff for instance.
It's a "slow forum" right now, but it can support a lot more -- and works well on mobile. But, like, on a lot of webhosts setting up a Flarum forum like that takes almost zero technical skill.
And you can set up your own blog on a self hosted server. Like Wordpress is incredibly easy to set up on your own site, We run the main Nerd & Tie site -- and we use it to serve up our podcasts. I also use it to power my webcomics like Peregrine Lake.
My personal website comes from the old internet, so my blog is literally run from a hand coded piece of software I hacked together originally back in like 2001.
And you might be asking yourself "How do I follow blogs that are independently run" and the answer is simple -- RSS feeds.
RSS is an XML format that breaks down items in a standard way that can be interpreted by an RSS reader. You probably already use something that touches RSS feeds -- Podcasts run entirely on RSS feeds. I don't know if it still works, but even Tumblr blogs have RSS feeds at the url [username].tumblr.com/rss.
Now I use Thunderbird for email, which has a built in RSS reader to monitor certain blogs to watch for import updates.
Is it harder to discover people to follow in this model? Absolutely. The onus is on the reader to seek out the folks they want to read and interact with. But it's safer. We see with congress's attempts to constantly ban TikTok and Musk's destruction of Twitter that centralized platforms have deep vulnerabilities. By moving across the web to multiple datacenters on multiple hosts we ensure that we're much harder to get rid of.
Time to be the cockroach.

an rc car forum discusses 9-year-old Oscar Piastri
#oscar piastri#.NO YOU DONT UNDERSTAND the amount of sources ive found on both rc cars and karting are like “damn this kid is going somewhere”#.“this kid's talent is crazy” “from the first lap i knew he was special” like... across the board in many ways.#.and from before F1 like it's not just ppl capitalizing on Oscar Piastri McLaren Driver#.also excuse me while I cry abt how both mark webber and random internet person have called him “little legend”#.on a separate silly note the rc forums referring to oscar simply as oscar means that instead of 17 “piastri” threads i have to comb thru#.its now *checks search results prior to 2012* around 300#original

critical engagement and sincerity have not DISAPPEARED or anything but i do think the rise n dominance of short-form content has shifted the way we communicate and how we interact w art and media..the algorithm pushes n rewards a certain way of speaking and thinking, aka bite-sized and accessible. and if talking from your rolodex of go-to phrases or being braindead is the thing that keeps you in this positive feedback loop, then why stop. youre conditioned to not be earnest, or strange or difficult or longer than 280 characters. youll get thousands of likes for it. also im not against a good meme or anything honestly i think memes are like a connective tissue in internet culture and i actually think thats a beautiful thing.. but its when all your posts , thoughts , content are catered for an audience or popularity.. i feel like people become out of touch with their personal reactions or actual complex and nuanced feelings and discouraged from expressing them. its sad!
#i guess i just miss long blog posts/ message boards n forums/ early youtube and a different internet age...#ive been stewing on my general disdain for social media theres a looot more to say aghh#l1

one thing i know for sure to be true about lassie is that he does not actually, depsite what you'd think, vote republican. but this is NOT because he's secretly extremely liberal or something not at all. what he does is he either doesn't vote at all, ever, not even in local stuff, or he only votes when he can write in an obscure candidate who founded their own party that caters to his esoteric and contradictory self-sufficiency-hound who is a government employee and happy about it political views . he's insufferable in any sort of ideological talk, but he's undeniably not boring to listen to
#you'd think he'd be an internet conspiracist but he hates forums that are not about wwi or like. the invention of the atlatl#and if anybody on those threads deviates from the history to talk about politics he blocks them for being off topic#psych#tim is VERY charitable towards lassie as regards lassie's politics. as is his right. but i like to be a lil mean#q

Internet Forum
The Power and Appeal of Internet Forums
In the digital age, communication has transformed dramatically, and one of the most significant platforms to emerge for sharing ideas, solving problems, and building communities is the internet forum. These online spaces have proven to be invaluable for people across the globe, offering a unique blend of social interaction and knowledge sharing that traditional media cannot replicate.
What Are Internet Forums?
Internet forums, also known as discussion boards or message boards, are online platforms where users can post messages, ask questions, and participate in discussions on a wide variety of topics. Forums are typically organized into categories or sections, each dedicated to a specific subject. Users can create threads (or topics) within these categories, and other members can reply, creating a dynamic and ongoing conversation.
The Appeal of Internet Forums
Community Building
One of the most compelling aspects of internet forums is their ability to create a sense of community. Whether you're interested in gardening, gaming, technology, or niche hobbies, there's likely a forum dedicated to your passion. Forums bring together like-minded individuals who might never meet in real life, fostering connections and friendships that transcend geographic boundaries.
Knowledge Sharing
Forums are treasure troves of information. Members often share expertise, advice, and experiences, making these platforms invaluable resources. For instance, tech forums like Stack Overflow are a haven for developers seeking solutions to coding problems, while parenting forums provide support and advice for new parents navigating the challenges of raising children.
Anonymity and Openness
The relative anonymity of forums encourages open and honest discussions. Users can seek advice or share opinions without fear of judgment, creating an environment where people feel free to express themselves. This anonymity is especially beneficial for sensitive topics, such as mental health, where individuals may be hesitant to speak openly in other settings.
Long-Lasting Content
Unlike social media platforms where posts can quickly get buried, forum threads often remain accessible for years. This longevity ensures that valuable information and discussions are preserved, allowing future users to benefit from past conversations.
Types of Internet Forums
Forums cater to diverse interests and purposes, making them versatile tools for various audiences. Here are some common types:
Interest-Based Forums: These focus on specific hobbies or interests, such as photography, fitness, or gaming.
Support Forums: Designed to provide help and advice, such as health forums or recovery communities.
Professional Forums: Tailored for professionals to discuss industry trends, share insights, or network, like marketing or programming forums.
General Discussion Forums: Cover a wide range of topics and attract users from diverse backgrounds, such as Reddit.
Best Practices for Participating in Forums
Follow the Rules
Every forum has its own set of guidelines, and adhering to them is crucial. These rules ensure that discussions remain respectful and productive.
Engage Constructively
Be respectful and considerate when posting or replying. Constructive contributions foster a positive environment and encourage meaningful discussions.
Use the Search Function
Before starting a new thread, use the forum's search function to check if your question or topic has already been addressed. This helps reduce redundancy and keeps the forum organized.
Be Patient
Forums are not real-time chat platforms. It may take time for members to respond to your posts, so be patient and avoid spamming threads with repeated messages.
Challenges and Limitations
While forums offer numerous benefits, they are not without challenges. Moderation can be a significant issue, as poorly moderated forums may become breeding grounds for spam, harassment, or misinformation. Additionally, the anonymity that encourages openness can sometimes lead to toxic behavior.
To mitigate these issues, many forums employ moderators who enforce rules and ensure that discussions remain civil. Community-driven moderation, where members report inappropriate content, is also common.
The Evolution of Forums
Internet forums have evolved significantly since their inception. Early forums were simple text-based platforms, but modern forums offer a wide range of features, including multimedia support, real-time notifications, and integration with social media. Platforms like Reddit and Quora have redefined the traditional forum model, combining elements of social networking with discussion boards.
Moreover, the rise of mobile technology has made forums more accessible than ever. Dedicated apps and mobile-friendly websites allow users to participate in discussions from anywhere, ensuring that forums remain relevant in the fast-paced digital landscape.
The Future of Internet Forums
As technology continues to advance, forums are likely to become even more sophisticated. Artificial intelligence and machine learning could enhance user experiences by curating personalized content, identifying and removing harmful posts, and improving search functionality. Virtual and augmented reality may also play a role, creating immersive discussion spaces that bring the community experience to life.
Despite the emergence of new technologies and platforms, the core appeal of forums—community, knowledge sharing, and open discussion—is unlikely to change. These timeless qualities ensure that forums will remain a vital part of the online ecosystem for years to come.
Conclusion
Internet forums h ave carved out a unique niche in the digital world, offering a platform for connection, learning, and dialogue. Whether you're seeking advice, sharing your expertise, or simply looking to connect with others who share your interests, forums provide an unparalleled space for interaction. As they continue to evolve, forums will undoubtedly adapt to meet the changing needs of their users, solidifying their place as an indispensable tool in the digital age.

#i hope there's a picture going around the holonet thats like “rpf is fine” (c) grandmaster yoda#star wars#remember when there was that ancient star wars internet forum during prequels release that would post little snippets of news from coruscan#i miss that i need that that would've been so fun#make idk like a fake twitter account for planet or a city that woukd publish little things like that#and have reoccurring news reporter and celebrity characters#okay apparently a combination of the words space and tik tok kinda sounds like something else so im editing this sorry peace and love
