Christina childhood coach was her mom.
her mom started her when she was teeny, but Christina's wiki says her first coach was Yves Desjardins in Montreal. and omg
Christina with her first partner, Simon-Pierre Malette-Paquette
Julie Marcotte? they skated Umbrellas of Cherbourg?
Christina the serial monogamist skated with Simon from 2006-2012, moved to Novi with him apparently - so he's the one who left her without a partner after she'd moved to Michigan with him
but back up - Christina was pre-novice champion in 🇨🇦 in 2012, look who it was in 2013-14:
Simon grew up, skated on the JGP with a Carmen named Ellie Fisher, pictured here in 2018 (it's not Carmen, just tango season lol). their coaches were Marie-France Dubreuil, Patrice Lauzon and Romain Haguenauer 💀 they were 4th at Can Nats as juniors in both 2018 and 2019
and Christina met a boy named Anthony, and it's just as well that Simon left her high and dry in Novi 😅

Grand Prix season is nigh and I am most excited for the return of Yuma Kagiyama! If you didn't know about Yuma before the 2022 Olympics, yes, the skating skills have always been that gorgeous. Enjoy a little throwback Yuma at JGP Courcheval 2019.

I’m guessing Skate Canada lost a ton of money in the 2020-2022 period. They didn’t have any skating events with ticketed crowds in person starting from 2020 worlds through 2022 nationals if I recall correctly (except for a very limited crowd at 2021 Skate Canada). And this kind of went down the line, including synchro and some of the local competition so they would have been in some pretty dire financial straits.
That’s said, they’ve also had some bad luck and skaters not quite panning out, especially in men’s singles. I think, unfortunately, the prevalence of the Eteri/doping machine has decimated a lot of women’s skating, because so many high-quality skaters left the sport because they knew they couldn’t get anywhere. Like maybe Katelyn or Gabby would have had a different mental state if the playing field had been fair.
Pairs has been a rough go for many countries. The discipline itself has not been able to attract top skaters. But obviously the choice to support Eric and Vanessa in their stunt of trying to make the 2022 Olympics likely didn’t inspire confidence in the teams just below.
Sadly, I don’t think they’re inspiring anyone with the way they’re going about trying to promote younger dance teams. This year will be telling to see whether or not LaLa are rewarded if they skate better than Piper and Paul.
i thought they made a good amount of money from the lower level access programs last season (CAN skate? i forget). but that makes sense that they might have still have been financial issues left from the lockdown seasons
i stopped watching women's skating altogether from around 2019 til Beijing because it was so depressing and toxic feeling. i just couldn't get into it. i'm sure it was incredibly discouraging to a lot of clean skaters
ugh Evelyn Walsh seems happy at college, but the way the Olympic selection for Eric and Vanessa went down after Nationals also sucked. the unfairness of Russia still getting team bronze is upsetting, but did Skate Canada say a word to advocate for their team to get bronze at all in the past two years?
i don't know if this relates, but Meagan Duhamel is one of the very few people in Canadian figure skating who's outspoken, but she's now unwelcome with Skate Canada - it gives the impression that speaking up is discouraged. there are more important things than being nice, if nice is at the expense of what's true or right
Canada is one of the biggest skating nations, but they're sending fewer skaters out to compete internationally than some smaller ones. are they really that strapped for cash? maybe it's easier for European feds to send skaters out because so many of the B and C competitions are relatively nearby? we've had North American Worlds for the last 2 seasons, but there hasn't been a JGP here since 2019, and we get zero or one Challengers in ice dance on this continent per season - this year it's zero

2023 Autumn Classic International FS results, final results, and Stephen's protocol.
Ok this is really late my apologies.
Let's start with that costume. I was hoping to see Stephen in blue since he revealed it's his favourite colour. Have been wanting to see him in something ombré forever. I was actually telling my mom yesterday I wish he'd wear ombré as it would suit him so well. To get both in one costume? I was screaming. Thank you to whoever designed that.
Now the technical. First of all, big props to Stephen for not letting those early mistakes get to him. He held it together and kept going, and that is so important for his progress as an athlete. Full respect for that. In terms of that content I was surprised to see his Lutz come back from its exile. It was a nice one, and I think nailing that helped settle him down after the first fall.
The 4S in the second half looked good, and that 3F3A sequence was amazing. That's smart thinking, to put two of his best jumps together like that. And finally we have some variety in jump layout. He must have grown tired of the layouts he'd been doing for the past four years. Level 4 spins are always welcome. The choreography looks interesting and so different from last season. The crowd was clapping along to his step sequence, which is great. It was a level 2 but I'm sure with mileage it will improve.
It was the first time out with this program and it wasn't bad at all plus he managed to get a medal so I'll take that. I haven't had time to go through comments but what little I have seen suggests people like this program. Also a strange little fact: this is Stephen's first time winning bronze at an event. He did win a small bronze for the FS at 2019 Junior Worlds, but he's only ever won gold or silver otherwise. This is his first international senior medal and I'm just proud of him for picking himself up after last season and coming out here and making a statement. If you were writing him off after last season you should think twice.
Also shout out to the two MVPs with Stephen - Bruce and coach Lee Barkell. Bruce went to Montreal to watch Stephen and cheer him on, and has been supporting him online as well. I think you can even hear him in the crowd, and I'm sure his support buoyed Stephen. As I've stated previously Stephen's best skates in the past couple of years have come with Lee by his side. Stephen is a Californian now, but I hope he can continue to work with Lee and become more successful under his (occasional) tutelage.
Back in January 2022 when Stephen was forced to withdraw from Nationals I was going through it but was encouraged by the kind words of a coach (an acquaintance) who reassured me Stephen would be back. They were letting me know that Stephen would be selected for Junior Worlds without stating it outright, but I didn't comprehend that in my state of mind. I just calmed myself down by thinking about when he'd be back. At that time I told myself he would be here for 2022 SCI, 2023 Nationals, and also 2023 ACI. I'm glad to see that all worked out without any more withdrawals. Let's manifest more good things.
Stephen has now done a JGP, JGP Final, Grand Prix, and Challenger Series event within Canada. He's just got one international left to do here...and that's enough from me. :)
Way to go Stephen! Congratulations and looking forward to seeing more.

2023 Autumn Classic International short program results and Stephen's SP protocol from today.
Now that was a good skate! Stephen didn't appear to be thrilled, and on reading his comments I get that he didn't feel that sure about his jumps, but he still went out there and delivered his best SP since July 2022, which is huge. He improved on his personal best SP score that he set when he was 14 at 2019 JGP USA. And he's sitting in second place, which is fantastic.
If there is anything that could be improved it's his PCS but just having a clean skate helped with getting a non-atrocious score there as well.
I am noting that Stephen does much better when he trains in Toronto. Someone on Twitter was suggesting a transfer of universities but that's a bit extreme. At the very least he could train here more frequently to stabilize his technique and build confidence in his jumps.
I apologize I am actually not free during this event so things will be updated a bit slowly but it'll all be done. Thanks for your patience. Please check out the Twitter if you would like quicker updates.
Overall just want to say that I'm so proud of Stephen for his efforts. That was a job well done. Bon courage for the FS as well.

JGP Austria ice dance -
youtube
Darya Grimm/Michail Savitskiy 🇩🇪GER (16/20 yo) they were 5th at the JGP Final last season and 6th in the RD at junior worlds but had to withdraw from the FD due to food poisoning. he was the engaging commentator for Nebelhorn Trophy last fall. their ISU bio hobbies are cherry pit spitting (her) and failure management (him), and their skating has personality as well 😊 he's been the stand out - lovely skater, strong partner - he draws your eye when you watch them. she was very young when they began, has lots of potential. her extension and free leg weren't quite matching his last season. their RD is to ELO, and they have a Habanera (so, Spanish themed?) FD. this is their 3rd and final junior season. the podium at worlds feels like an attainable goal for them
youtube
i wrote this before news of their accident 😢 we won't get to see them skate, but check out their previous programs if you like. hope she recovers stronger than ever and that we see them back this season
Angelina Kudryavtseva/Ilia Karankevich 🇨🇾CYP (17/19 yo) known for their creativity and flair, they had a cheerleader FD last season. every season they do something nobody else is doing (2021, 2019). i love their audacity and quirkiness - most of their programs have some surprise, their take on most styles has their stamp on it. they like no hands balance lifts where she's holding on by her heel or toe, or rotational lifts where she's spinning on top of his head. even in a lyrical program ⬆️ look. at. these. lifts! maybe not every novel thing works, but so often it does. they've been as high as 8th at junior worlds but tend to lose points on levels and twizzle errors. there are details of unison and control that they need to improve in order to move up. i'm sure they're aiming for top 5 in the world and want to make the JGPF. they're skating a Madonna RD and a Nights of Cabiria FD - if that's the Fellini film music, it's bright and jazzy but more in a characterful than cool way, 50s, kind of lush in places, and it’s the story that Sweet Charity is based on - am very interested to see what they came up with for their final junior FD
youtube
Elliana Peal/Ethan Peal 🇺🇸USA (16/19 yo) a sibling team, they've been as high as 3rd at US Nationals and have silver medals from Dallas and Lake Placid this season already. they're aiming for the worlds team for the US this season. they have a Janet Jackson RD ⬆️ and Lord of the Rings FD. they've always been coached by their dad, who went to jr worlds for US ice dance himself, but at Lake Placid, Igor was also at the boards for them although he's not officially on their team. they maybe lack speed but have good unison
youtube
Iryna Pidgaina/Artem Koval 🇺🇦UKR (14/19 yo) she looks more mature as a skater than her years, so they seem balanced as a team. last season was their first in int'l competition, and they had a 4th place at JGP Gdansk. this season they're skating George Benson and Pump Up the Jam for their RD, Robbie Williams and I Love Rock n' Roll for their FD, and Nazarova/Nikitin are 2 of their choreographers😭
dailymotion
Chloe Nguyen/Brendan Giang 🇨🇦CAN (18/20 yo) they're a newly formed team training with WIng/Lowe in Vancouver. both have been to the JGP with their previous partners. they won the Next Gen competition, have good fundamental skills, seem well matched and are off to a good start (they're at 1:09:30 ⬆️) i really hate their Aspects of Love FD music- it's from an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical that was a huge flop on Broadway. i'd dislike the music anyway, but what makes it worse is that the show, among a number of storylines, has 2 inappropriate relationships between an adult and a minor, and two of the songs in this FD are about those relationships. i don't know why their team would choose this for a junior program
youtube
Ashlie Slatter/Atl Ongay-Perez 🇬🇧GBR (14/16 yo) they are musical and have been vibrant performers since they were little. as their skating skills develop to catch up to their performance quality, they'll rise. levels in step sequences and patterns have been a challenge. but they have interesting choreo and i think? skate more in hold than a lot of teams. they were 18th at junior worlds in march. their RD is Run-DMC, and their FD is jazz, blues and Great Balls of Fire
youtube
Caroline Mullen/Brendan Mullen 🇺🇸 USA (17/19 yo) they had to sit out last season due to injury and also switched camps from WISA to Rockville with Dmitri Ilin but have been spending time at MIDA getting choreo as well. they have a bronze medal from Lake Placid this season, and this is their first JGP
Ambre Perrier Gianesini/Samuel Blanc Klaperman 🇫🇷 FRA (16/16 yo) this is their 2nd junior and 2nd JGP season. they medaled at some events last season and have nice qualities but also were prone to falls and twizzle errors. hopefully they got their nerves out and will have good outings here

JGP Bangkok dance: the 1st JGP of the season! in Thailand! this ice dance field has the 2 top teams from jr worlds who didn't senior up -
Leah Neset/Artem Markelov 🇺🇸USA (17/20 yo) they were 5th at Worlds in March, have won 2 events this season already. their RD is Scorpions and Joan Jett, and their FD to a Sarah Brightman song based on a classical piece by Albinoni. they're polished, their demeanor is professional, a mature team for juniors. their coach is so involved, you might see her jumping and dancing at the boards when they skate. they're aiming for gold at Jr Worlds this season
Celina Fradji/Jean-Hans Fourneaux 🇫🇷FRA (18/19 yo) they were 6th at both Jr Worlds and the JGPF last season. they're skating the same Scorpions song as Neset/Markelov in their RD, but with AC/DC, and they have a tango FD. this is their 8th season together, and the longevity shows in their sense of ease and equality with each other. they have a bit of a history of being stronger in the RD than the FD at big events- but we'll see what happens this season. they're looking to return to the JGPF and to medal at jr worlds

Layla Veillon/Alexander Brandys 🇨🇦CAN (17/18 yo) 5th at 🇨🇦Nats in january, could make the Jr Worlds team this season. they have a Run-DMC RD and a Chaplin FD. they've competed twice this summer, their FD is sweet and has the curve lift from Seasons, and the RD is fun and in process: the rocker foxtrot is the junior RD pattern, and in the 2nd half, the teams switch sides - what traditionally were the woman's steps are skated by the man and vice versa - L/A missed all the key points in this section in both their comps, so i'm sure they’ve been working on that. many teams are having similar issues with this 2nd half of the pattern (2RF). it feels like IAM/O have a 3 yr plan for their jr career - last season was time to learn the big stage, give them programs in their wheelhouse which were nevertheless more mature than what they had before. this season started with difficult balance lifts in both programs (the original curve lift in their RD was like a Madi and Keiffer Hubbell lift that required a lot of strength from both), dance styles and storytelling that ask a lot of them, encouraging them, especially Alex, to project more, and they are☺️
youtube
Yufei Lin/Zijian Gao CHN (18/19 yo) they were on the JGP circuit in 2019, so this is their 5th junior season? they have programs by Romain and Pascal Denis including this Sleeping Beauty FD ⬆️ - i love a good classical program, and this one is lovely- they visited IAM recently. they're promising, and it will be interesting to watch their progression. they seem to be following in Wang/Liu’s footsteps working both in China and with IAM
youtube
Jinny Kim/Namu Lee 🇰🇷KOR (15/16 yo) South Korea has competitions to decide who they send to the JGP, so here's their RD- they train with Wing/Lowe in Vancouver, and they're young, but i love when you watch a team and their skating basics look this strong- they need experience together, but there's a lot to like - they're both performers, he especially is giving 100%
Natalie Blaasova/Filip Blaas 🇨🇿CZE (15/18 yo) another sibling team from the Czech Republic, though from a different camp than the Mrazeks and Taschlers. their RD is Tina Turner and "It's Raining Men,” and their FD is Wakanda Forever
Alexia Kruk/Jan Eisenhaber 🇩🇪GER (16/18 yo) they did a variation of the goose last season in their FD ⬆️ this season, they're doing a Michael Jackson RD and a tango/flamenco FD
any team with a JGP assignment is one of the best in their whole country - good luck to them all 💙💙💙

Does Scott have any sway with Skate Can? Lily and Nathan keep getting deprioritized
he must, but fabbri/ayer had a GP last season, and they've come out ahead of Lily and Nathan every time they've competed against each other. the last time was Souvenir Georges Ethier last September, and F/A won by 21 points
that gap was ridiculous and not real, but F/A have been seniors since 2019 despite Alicia being younger than Lily or Nathan, have been to junior worlds and had 3 seasons of international experience, and being out due to injury, they look at past performance. L/N had their first senior B last season and had the bad luck of missing their JGPs because of covid.
i'm just playing devil's advocate. i'd rather see Lily and Nathan at a GP, but i think those would be the arguments for sending F/A

I feel like every FS fan has one or two Japanese skaters that are their roman empire. Stunning skaters that never made it because of injuries, losing jumps post puberty or just never making it through the cut-throat domestic hell that is the Japanese field.
So you'll notice them on the JGP or at junior worlds and fall in love and wait for their senior breakout... Which won't happen...
Tomoe Kawabata iirc had lots of fans in the fandom, a good exemple of what I'm talking about... Sena Miyake for the men. You could add Mako Yamashita to the list...
For me it's Yuna Shiraiwa. Glorious musicality good Lutz... The 2018/2019 season was her best one. After that she lost consistency and COVID screwed the tiny chance she could have at competing again internationally. This season's Japanese Nationals were her last.
And Pictures at an Exhibition is the best program Yuna ever had
