Hello, hope you are well! For your modern au reqs; someone who’s in this AU but you haven’t really talked about as much/ is underrated?
If you are not feeling that; Astrid and Snotlout rollerskating?
Tumblr media
dagur......
technically eret or valka or gobber i haven't dug too much into yet, either. same with alvin, viggo, ryker, krogan, drago, etc, but dagur is very integral to the parts of the au i've been focused on. he's an antagonist and he gets his redemption. (and i am still ironing out how i want to use everyone else listed)
but he's a senior in hs when the gang are freshmen (events of httyd 1 & riders of berk). they're his favorite little punching bags, altho snotlout initially follows him around like a puppy, but once he's friends with the gang again, dagur just adds him to his list.
oswald is a very present and well meaning father but is too hands off when it comes to dagur and thus, dagur feels he could get away with murder if he rlly wants to. he gets into fights, constantly in detention, in-school suspension, out of school suspension, anything except truly getting expeled bc well, he likes his extra curriculars. need to be in school some of the time to do them.
after the gang open the hidden world, dagur loves harrassing them, esp when his little sister starts hanging out with them, which he believes she could get friends who aren't LOSERS.
dagur's redemption here comes from, after graduating, realizing he doesn't do anything except cause trouble and follow around a group of younger teens to feel powerful. esp aftee oswald finally starts putting his foot down when dagur (unintentionally) hurts heather. he still hangs around the gang but more obnoxiously forces himself into their business, esp when they start studying a skrill that's begun to nest in the cliffs by the rocky shores of their small town.
it's fishlegs who finally gives dagur the real reality check he needs. he meets shattermaster (courtesy of hiccup obv, like in the show) & from there, having to care for this sweet, little, snorty gronckle, does dagur finally become aware of behavior and how it affects others.
he becomes an integral part of the gang and once everyone graduates and heads off to uni (except snotlout) he and heather step up to help at the hidden world. he also rlly finds himself style wise. he likes tight fitting crop tops. a lot.
altho, he can still be manipulative... for the benefit and detriment of the gang. but he rlly does actively try to be better <3 esp for his sister and hiccup (dagur and hiccup are not related in this au at all, same as the shows. but the whole "brothers in arms" thing is there).
he DOES go by "dagur the deranged" bc of the gang when they were kids and they would play vikings vs dragons. his real name is david LMFAO.

This but with rtte characters❤️‍🩹
Maturing is realizing that
You can't revive the scourge of odin pandemic just for money, Viggo.
A dragon can't die like a man, because they're not men, Dagur. Btw where's shattermaster you bitch
You shouldn't eat someone's domestic chicken, Ryker.
Your death is very pleasing, Johann.
You can't kill people because they don't agree with how you hunt dragons, Krogan.
You shouldn't marry someone against their will, Throk.
Giving overgrown mangoes to dragons won't unbrainwash them, Mala.

Politely Rude
Tumblr media
Dagur is someone I would consider politely rude, as the title indicates. This probably sounds strange and I'd concur, but I still think it's true.
Dagur has traditional manners. He even tells Shattermaster to show good manners after he's fed rocks. He says please and thank you both as a good guy and a villain. (Examples being when he thanked Hiccup for agreeing to help him train a dragon and asked Ryker to please just listen to his ideas for the Hunters.)
The chief dislikes poor table manners like smacking. We've even seen him eat in "Gone, Gustav, Gone" where he did so with a fork and knife.
Yet, Dagur will also do the rudest things😂. He's called the Outcasts a band of rejects, snuck onto the Edge and rummaged through Hiccup's things, etc. In this very gif, he'll ask Hiccup to be his best man and then proceed to almost force him to agree.
Tumblr media
This one too. There's someone else in this scene: Savage. The reason you can't see him is because he fell after Dagur half-choked/half-tossed him. He's also why Dagur goes upwards randomly. He steps on him🤣. Just no respect.
I feel like Dagur knows how to be polite and does definitely try to be more when he's good, but there's a combination of not caring about certain rude moments and not knowing that he's being impolite. For instance, in the same episode when he wanted Shattermaster to be a grateful dragon, he compared Hiccup to tiny and "wimpy" Hunter. He did something similar when they were kids too, stopping himself before he got through the entire insult because Hiccup "know(s) what (he is)." So, sometimes, he's definitely trying to get under someone's skin. Other times, I really believe that he just says stuff and has no clue it could be interpreted as offensive (or he realizes it after it's already come out his mouth).

Serotonin Booster :D 🐉
How to train your dragon edition
Here are some things I had forgotten or little details I just noticed on my rewatch, maybe even Unpopular Opinions 🤭👀
✨Race to the Edge ✨
SEASON 5
Meatlug and Toothless messing around in ep1 when Hiccup and Fishlegs are trying to figure out how to stabilize the island 🥺
I remember when I first watched this I was actually in bio and hearing Ruff and Tuff talk about symbiosis was like " WOW IM LEARNING THAT" 😂😂😂
Symbiotic relationship - symbiosis is the interaction between organisms living in close physical association to the advantage of both
It can lead to -> parasitism - a non-mutual symbiotic relationship between species where the parasite benefits at the expense of the host
- Hookfang and Snotlout have a parasitic relationship JAHDHAHSHA
wait I like that instead of calling a relationship toxic now imma be like "this shii is parasitic peace out ✌🏼️"
HICCSTRID FOREHEAD KISSES OMG😭
I like how Barf and Belch are incredibly strong, I feel like it's a fact that's usually ignored about them
Astrid: *talking about Garf* that dragon has a lot of fight in him
Hiccup: *while placing his hand on her shoulder* he's not the only one
I can't ok I love them too much 🥺
WAIT I JUST NOTICED THE FORESHADOWING WHEN THE TWINS WERE REFERRING TO JOHAN AS A PARASITE OMG 😳
THE BETROTHAL NECKLACE 😭😭😭
Fishlegs licking Astrid's hand is hilariousss nonono it's just that scene in general when Fishlegs is trying to help Astrid find the betrothal gift for Hiccup and she judo-flips him and then sits on him like 🤔
Sandbuster - doesn't like the light. Lives underground.
Astrid riding Toothless to save Hiccup. Just badass.
Hiccup giving Astrid the betrothal necklace and telling her that it's ok that she didn't get him anything bc she's the best gift in the world 🥺
And their hug and the way he moved her out of harm's way whenever Snotlout threw the sword
Still sad abt Shattermaster being replaced by the Triple Stryke
I really liked ep3 whenever they were in Berserker island bc we got to see them actually fighting in battle without their dragons it was pretty cool
The beginning of ep4 is also hilarious I can't with Astrid and Snotlout fighting and then also Astrid beating him up JAHDHAHSHA
- I also always wanted to know what Snotlout said to her 😭😭😭 all of them were just extremely concerned and shocked and Snotlout even had to leave the Edge UGH AHZHZHAG
Atali and the Wingmaidens 👏🏼🤩
"Males would neither understand, nor would they be helpful." Atali is a queen
Vanaheim - the last resting place of all dragons
"Sadness is a matter of perspective. It is how you choose to view something that makes it happy, scary, intriguing, or sad"
Ok so is Stormfly a tracker-class dragon or a sharp-class dragon?
Sentinels - Know all the dragons so they know how to deal with each of their tactics. Run Vanaheim. Have never encountered night furies. Good trackers. Blind. They tend to the island
OMG I FORGOT THAT VANAHEIM IS THE SKELETON OF THE KING OF DRAGONS
HAND HOLDING AND KISSES UFFF THANK U
Hiccstrid kiss count: 3😘
It's the way it's so realistic too, the way he smiles at her, the way he holds her hand and looks at her, the way she puts her hand on his chest and he lightly touches it with his free hand I just can't they're too perfect
Snotlout's excitement to see that Fishlegs was Fishlegs again and not Thor Bonecrusher- I mean the dude went running towards him🥺
I love how Hiccup just knows when Astrid's thinking about something
SPARRING HICCSTRID UGHHH I LOVE THIS SCENE
The way he's just in such a good mood afterwards 🥺
The scene leading up to the moonlight flight in ep7. I love them so much.
Hiccstrid Scene: ep7 min 5:42 -> 7:24
Meatlug's shot was the first to free a Singetail from a dragon flyer
Just realized that Johan not being able to get Hiccup's oil was probably also part of a plan to get them away from the edge to attack
Ok but Snotlout actually taking the initiative to be the leader while Hiccup and Astrid were away
The edge 🥺and when he destroyed his own Hut 🥺 I can't 🥺
I love how Mala and Throk were both trying to put the gang in a better mood
Silicates makes Meatlug drool
Tumblr media
Tuffnut's Spanish is amazing we love to see a bilingual king✋🏼👑
Just realized that Krogan's name is well... Krogan. I never actually paid attention to the dude.
OMG WE GET TO SEE DRAGO IN THIS SEASON THIS IS CRAZY
I really like the twins in the Wings of War Episodes, the way they attempt to speak Spanish and start pronouncing the Rrrrrrrrs
Spitelout too lmao the way he helped Hiccup 🤩
It was also Spitelout the one that figured out that the Singetails don't like the altitude
I really love how Hiccup actually found a way to fight the flyers without hurting the Singetails, OMG IT REMINDS ME OF AANG when everyone was telling him to just kill the FIRELORD he found the right way
Tuff has a feet fettish
Stormfly and Garff messing around is too funny I love them sm 😭
Snotlout can be so sad sometimes
The twins singing >>
And that hug between Stormfly and Garff, they're just adorable 🥺🤧
HAHDHSHAHA THE WAY ASTRID LOOKED AT FISHLEGS WHENEVER THE SLITHERWINGS SHOWED
Slitherwings - very poisonous dragons! Even their skin is coated in poison. Like snake appearance. Not much is known about its poison and how it works but there is an antidote -> combination of angel fern root, pine sap and Slitherwing venom. The skin coating protects them from Garff's amber
Stormfly is such a badass omg I love her sm the way she protected Garff
Garff is an excellent shot according to Fishlegs
Fishlegs telling Astrid to look at him is just adorable, the way he wanted her to feel better 😭
Have I mentioned how much I love lil Hiccstrid moments? They dont even have to be romantic but just them? Like he just lightly touched her shoulder and told her to be strong and be there for Stormfly 🥺
Snotlout actually being worried about Astrid 🤧
I will never get over Astrid and Stormfly's relationship and how close they are, they would do anything for each other and Astrid just proved that by going up to the Slitherwing and PUNCHING THE LIL SHIT just to get Stormfly the antidote. AND WHEN SHE STARTED CRYING!!! As Tuffnut said "no one has ever prepared us for something like this"
And the Ruffnut being there for her and protecting her 😭😭😭
Astrid can actually draw
Tumblr media
Still pissed about the fact that Hiccup never knew Astrid got poisoned NOW I NEED TO READ A FANFIC ON IT
That scene in Snuffnut [ep11] where Throk arrives to take Ruffnut as his wife is too funny. The way Astrid is pissed since the beginning and both Hiccup and Fishlegs are like "umm nope" AND WHEN HICCUP TAKES ASTRID OUT OF THE SCENE AND ALL YOU CAN HEAR IS HIM SCREAMING AND THESE RANDOM NOISES 😩😩😩😂
It really bothered me that Astrid had to stay behind in Looking for Oswald... And Chicken [ep12] just to take care of the twins when we could've had some Hiccstrid 😩😭 but it makes sense because Astrid is the only one Hiccup can actually trust on to keep things under control because even though Fishlegs is kinda sane neither the twins nor Snotlout would listen to him and Snotlout would definitely join the twins or just make things worse somehow. I mean they've both proven themselves to be fully capable but well- yk... Astrid is just Astrid
Astrid and Stormfly's faces whenever the twins said they needes a dragon that loves tracking and chicken😭😂😩
Chicken covering her tracks and Snotlout as narrator 😂
Omg Dagur saw Oswald's dead body... He even had to bury him and wow-
Grim Gnashers - hunters that prey on the sick dragons in Vanaheim.
Chicklet🐥🐥🐥🐥
SNOTLOUT'S TAN LINE OMGGG
"Please let me hurt him. Please? Just-- just a little?"JAHSHAHAJAJ I LOVE AGGRESSIVE DAGUR
Fishlegs saying that "Snotlout can actually be pretty handy in an air battle" is so true. Like we mostly see Snotlout as this dumb, sarcastic, rebellious dude who doesn't care about anyone but himself and but that's actually not true he's actually caring and will fight for the ones he loves but he won't say that because he cares too much about what others think of him 😭
I really dislike Johan sm u guys don't understand like I used to like him and feel bad whenever ppl cut him short but ughhhhhhh it's the subtle things too like him telling Heather to give them the dragon eye, him screaming in Snotlout's ear, not extending his hand to grab Heather, and him putting his hand out to "grab" the lens but just causing Snotlout to drop it
The way Heather jumped to get Windshear and the way Windshear kept telling her to leave and save herself
Archipelago gold = The clouds of corn = pop corn
I can't believe I'm about to start season 6 this is actually so sad

Title: The Trap’s Aftermath
Prompt: Trying Not to Cry
Summary: Family On The Edge but if the gang had gone into the trap. Dagur has to deal with the aftermath.
Fandom: How To Train Your Dragon
Pairing: None
Word Count: 1260
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Major Character Death, Wrongfully Accused
Disclaimer: I don’t own the source material in this fanfic. That’s to whatever company or person owns it. I would never claim to own it.
Notes: There are probable influences from fandom and whatnot in this story. This story is based off a post I made shortly after Family On The Edge premiered about the fact that Dagur saved the gang from the trap and from certain death. I’m also noting as an influence, “What If I Was There” by snotlout (a fic in which Dagur dies in Hiccup’s arms in the context of the same episode) because I thought about it while I wrote this fic. Written for Bad Things Happen Bingo @badthingshappenbingo for the space “Trying Not to Cry”. This takes place in the Race to the Edge episode Family On The Edge, but diverges from canon. This is also on AO3.
Tumblr media
And it is below.
Dagur arrived too late. He and Shattermaster should have escaped the Edge’s stables before the Riders even left for Viggo’s shipyard.
Maybe he could have prevented this.
There didn’t seem to be any Hunters about anymore, but the area seemed to be a wreck of smoke and debris and… bodies.
He really hoped they were Hunters. And not the Dragon Riders. Or his sister.
He sucked in a breath, trying to take a deep breath. Ended up coughing because of the smoke from the fires.
“Find the Dragon Riders, Shattermaster,” Dagur whispered.
He hoped they wouldn’t find them. Maybe they were back at the Edge already, celebrating their victory.
Though, the area didn’t feel like a victory.
Shattermaster made the search easy, in the sense that he wasn’t running around all over a battlefield looking for them.
And it wasn’t long before he did start to find bodies.
 And they weren’t Hunters.
 He found Fishlegs first.
 His Gronckle was with him.
Shattermaster made a sad sound. Dagur patted his nose. Dagur forced himself to not cry or not make any sounds. He was going to hold it together. He needed to; he couldn’t break down now. He had to continue the search.
He also needed to figure out what to do.
Does he perform their funerals here? Does he bring Berk’s dead to them?
He couldn’t help but think about how much pain he had from not knowing what happened to his father. Was he alive or dead?
The idea of just giving them their battlefield funerals here, and not letting Stoick or any of the Riders’ families know. No. He had to go to Berk after he finished the search. Bring the Riders home before they made the trip to Valhalla. Even if it meant something bad happening to him. If Hiccup hadn’t told the Riders about how he and Toothless had been saved by him, he strongly doubted Stoick knew about it. He was sure he would not get a warm reception from Berk at all.
“Let’s find a ship, Shattermaster,” Dagur said, softly.
Quickly, they found an intact ship, with white cloth available, and placed Fishlegs there. He covered Fishlegs with some of the white cloth, and then continued on with his search.
He knew that the Dragon Riders, who so obviously cared for each other, would not have left Fishlegs alone here. They would have taken his body back.
And then he found the twins.
 Together, even in death.
They had been so kind to him recently. They seemed to enjoy his company. Less on edge about him being on their turf than the rest of the Riders.
He continued to steel himself to not cry. Now was not the time for that.
He still had to find his sister, his brother, and two of the other Riders.
 He found Snotlout next.
 And then he found Astrid.
He had been hoping that maybe she would have survived this, just on the basis of her skill as a warrior, but… here she was.
It was at that point that he realized, if Astrid had not survived, what chance did Hiccup or Heather have?
Especially after all this death. Hiccup would have not left his Riders alone like this.
He sucked in another breath. He really did not want his sister to be dead. He wanted the chance to repair their relationship. Wanted her to know that the rumors of his patricide were wrong.
He forced himself to not cry. He can cry later.
He continued on the search; his only breaks having been to transport the Riders and their dragons to the ship.
He eventually found Heather, and he willed himself hard not to cry. His chance at repairing his relationship with her had been destroyed with her death. He could cry later. Now was not the time.
But wow, his chest hurt. It took everything he had to not just give up now and cry on his sister’s body.
But he had to find Hiccup. And Toothless.
 And he did.
He had hoped that they had survived, but he knew that neither would have left the Riders and the dragons in this situation, that Hiccup would have been found weeping at their bodies.
Instead, Dagur was the one weeping. Once Dagur had placed Hiccup and Toothless with the rest of the Riders and their dragons on the ship, he allowed himself to weep.
 All these lives. Gone.
Dagur had a white flag held up high alongside the sails of the boat, to indicate his neutrality. Technically, he was on their side, but he knew the kind of reception he might receive, given his past. And the fact that he was transporting their dead tribespeople and dragons on the boat. It could be interpreted as a hostile act.
When he finally got to Berk, the Berkians that saw him first were at the docks and they immediately recognized him and were calling for Stoick, and yelling at Dagur quite forcefully to stay on the boat. Multiple Berkians had their weapons trained on him.
He had his hands raised to show he had no weapons and would not attack.
“I come in peace!” Dagur exclaimed.
He found that despite wanting to take a deep breath, he couldn’t.
No matter what happened, he was going to be the bearer of the worst news a parent could hear. For multiple parents.
Soon, Stoick was striding over to the docks, flanked by two other men. One was a man with a long blonde mustache and only two flesh limbs, the other was a man with dark black hair that looked like Snotlout.
“I can’t believe he turned himself in,” the Snotlout-look-alike said. “And where are the Dragon Riders?”
Dagur willed himself to keep it together.
“That’s why I am here,” Dagur said. “The Dragon Riders and my sister attacked Viggo Grimborn’s shipyard. And unfortunately, perished in the attempt.”
There were gasps from every person that had gathered.
“I warned Hiccup that it was a trap. And unfortunately, he did not listen. And I brought them back to their home.”
Stoick told some of the gathered Berkians to board the ship with the words, “Find my son and his Night Fury.”
Stoick and the two men stared at him, and he was sure they did not believe him. He did not have a good track record with Berk.
 A Berkian said, “Chief.”
Stoick looked away from him and strode past him onto the boat.
Dagur couldn’t bring himself to look and was sure that if he moved at all, they would attack him.
 Then he heard it.
And both men who had flanked Stoick rushed past him.
He heard some Berkians make exclamations to go get some person or another and it just got worse.
He watched as multiple people, clearly the Riders’ parents went on board and then he heard it.
Eventually, he heard Stoick say, “Arrest him. I believe he killed the Dragon Riders and their dragons.”
“No! I wasn’t there! I found them after!” Dagur exclaimed.
“The last information I heard about you was that you had joined forces with Viggo Grimborn and the Dragon Hunters. Therefore, you killed them. And your sister. And while we don’t have evidence, you have, in the past, made implications, that you killed your father, Oswald the Agreeable,” Stoick said. He said this in a very stoic way. “Arrest him. And give the green Gronckle some fish.”
“That’s my dragon,” Dagur said, softly, as his hands were bound. “Hiccup picked him for me…”

12. The Next Big Sting-Hiccup is paralyzed by the chief Speed Stinger and the venom lasts for a few days as his body reacts oddly to the effects. 6. A Grim Retreat-Toothless shoots Hiccup before Tuffnut can throw salt on him. Emotional and Physical Whump.
7. To Heather or Not to Heather-Emotional AU whump where Hiccup is Heather’s twin and Dagur’s younger brother. He takes it hard when she says she wants to leave, and there’s just a bunch of emotional conversations and people snapping at each other.
8. Stryke Out-Hiccup is forced to fight one of the dragons as a form of punishment. He has to knock the dragon unconscious with a mace to prevent it from killing Toothless who is tied up.
9. Tone Death-Hiccup has his ears damaged by Garf and has to learn sign language because it is so hard for him to hear if people aren’t right next to him.
10. Between a Rock and a Hard Place-Hiccup is thrown off of Toothless by the force of the Quakens, and damages his spine so he has to learn to walk again. In order to finish the mission of saving the dragons from the hunters, Fishlegs helps him make a temporary handle using a connecting rod so Hiccup can control Toothless’ stirrup with his hand since he can’t move his legs.
11. Family on The Edge-Emotional Whump in the Hiccup-is-related-to-Heather-AU
12. Last Auction Heroes-While locked up after being captured by Viggo, Hiccup is whipped in front of Gobber and the riders as a form of example, showing them what else will happen if they try to escape and attack him again.
13. Defenders of The Wing, Part 1-Hiccup is the one who defends Mala instead of Snotlout, and not only takes an arrow to the chest (shallow wound), but he has to deal with Mala suddenly having such interest in him, since he hasn’t decided rather his feelings for Astrid are romantic or not.
Season 4
1. Defenders of The Wing, Part 2-Hiccup gets stepped on by the Eruptidon and it causes internal damage.
2. Gruff Around the Edges-When Tuffnut extends the wings of the flight suit, instead of going through the wall, the right wing hits Hiccup dead center, jabbing upwards and damaging his windpipe.
3. Midnight Scrum-Hiccup’s neck is bruised and swollen from the damage Krogan’s chain did when it wrapped around him, and how tightly it was wrapped around him.
4. Not Lout-Emotional and Physical Whump, the Ballista hits Toothless instead of Snotlout protecting him in time. Toothless is either severely injured, or killed, and Hiccup is knocked unconscious with severe bruising, not knowing what condition his bud is in until he wakes up.
5. Saving Shattermaster-When Hiccup yells for Toothless to ‘keep firing’ the Night Fury isn’t fast enough and Hiccup gets impaled by numerous falling arrows, pinning him down with arrows in his arms, legs, and shoulders.
6. Dire Straits-Hiccup is able to get out of the window of Death Song Amber instead of the Submirriper saving him, but when the window shatters it impales him.
7. The Longest Day-Hiccup is blinded by a Shadowing.
8. Gold Rush-Viggo interrogates Hiccup after capturing him, using interrogation techniques that will not kill him, but are incredibly painful.
9. Out of The Frying Pan-Hiccup gets burned by a burst of lava that jumps up and hits his right leg.
10. Twintuition-Hiccup aspirates water when the dome on Viggo’s base starts filling with it.
11. Blindsided-Astrid isn’t the only one who’s blinded. Hiccup is too. The difference is Toothless knows echo location and Hiccup has been so used to being guided by Toothless in dark areas he has learned to use Toothless’ echoes to guide himself, so can navigate much easier than Astrid can with Toothless’ help when they go to get Stormfly.
12. Shell Shocked, Part 1-Hiccup is grazed by one of the ShellFire’s fireballs.
13. Shell Shocked, Part 2-Emotional and Physical whump. Hiccup tries to save Viggo when he falls, and they both go down. Hiccup lands on a rock, though Viggo burns and the scene is one that haunts him nightly. Do to the sheer heat of being inside of the volcano, Hiccup develops many second degree burns, the heat first burning through his tunic’s front and sleeves, then leaving circle shaped burns once the protective cloth is gone. Astrid and the others save him, but it takes a bit to get that close to the volcano because they need Meatlug to go down into the volcano who can resist the sheer heat.
Season 5
1. Living on The Edge-Garf, in a moment of panic, shoots Hiccup in the ankle causing it to break. Hiccup has to save The Edge from the volcano all with a broken foot.
2. Sandbusted-Hiccup gets stabbed by some broken glass caused by the SandBuster.
3. Something Rotten on Berkser Island-When saving their dragons from the guarded stables, Hiccup is attacked from behind by a hunter who has a dagger, prepared to stab him between the ribs which causes lung damage.
4. Snotlout’s Angels-Hiccup is shot by one of the female RazorWhips
5. A Matter of Perspective-Hiccup is blinded when the gust of a Sentinel Dragon causes him to hit his head (the irony)
6. Return of Thor Bonecrusher-While attempting to save Fishlegs, Hiccup is caught in a net trap that dislocates both of his shoulders.
7. Dawn of Destruction-When he goes in to destroy his hut, Hiccup is shot by one of the Singetails and thrown off of Toothless into the rubble that was once his hut.
8. The Wings of War, Part 1-When Dragon Flyers invade the Defenders of The Wing island, Hiccup is blasted while protecting one of his riders.
9. The Wings of War, Part 2-When the Singetail pins Hiccup, Spitelout and Toothless don’t get to him in time, and Hiccup is temporarily blinded with singes around his eyes.
10. No Dragon Left Behind-Hiccup gets shot by a Slitherwing and his friends have to find the antidote.
11. Snuffnut-While trying to help Ruff save ‘Snuffnut’, Hiccup gets burned by Changewing Acid.
12. Searching for Oswald...and Chicken-Hiccup is Heather’s twin and Dagur’s younger brother AU. Emotional Whump. Hiccup debates rather or not to read the note Oswald left for him because he knows Oswald had to have given Hiccup up to his father for some other reason than a peace treaty.
13. Sins of the Past-While fighting Krogan for the Dragon Eye lens, Hiccup is severely injured by Hookfang because Johan ‘accidentally’ freaks out and makes the dragon shoot at Hiccup.
Season 6
1. In Plain Sight-Hiccup isn’t able to dodge all of Johan’s knives.
2. No Bark, All Bite-Trying to save the dragons in the arena, Hiccup gets shot by the ballista.
3. Chain of Command-When he dives to catch Atali, Hiccup realizes he’s too close to the ground too late, and when he does catch her he and Toothless smash into the sharp-stone covered ground.
4. Loyal Order of Ingerman-While taking care of the kids, one fall ill and Hiccup has to take care of the little boy despite catching the same illness from said kid. Daddy-Style Hiccup taking care of sick kid even if he is sick too.
5. A Gruff Separation-When Hiccup saves Tuffnut from the Speed Stinger, he realizes Toothless is out of shots because they had been training previously, and so as a last resort he has to throw himself in harms way to save his friend.
6. Mi Amore Wing-The ArmorWing fires at Hiccup’s metal leg, burning it to his skin.
7. Ruff Transition-Hiccup is the one to help Ruff with Wingnut instead of Tuffnut, and winds up getting bit by the baby. He tries to hide the wound, saying it’s nothing, until it gets infected and he is on the line of fighting infection and losing his arm.
8. Tripple Cross-When the Skrill causes the giant explosion in the cave, Toothless’ tail is burned and Hiccup-not having fire proof skin like his Night Fury-takes burns all over the back half of his body, from his neck down to his ankle.
9. Family Matters-Hiccup is captured with the help of the mother Death Song and is interrogated for the information of his other riders.
10. Darkest Night-Emotional Whump, Hiccup has much more severe nightmares than we see in the episode.
11. Guardians of Vanaheim-Hiccup is struck by lightning instead of Snotlout.
12. King of Dragons, Part 1-Hiccup doesn’t dodge the ballista aimed for the Titan Wing Dramillion.
13. King of Dragons, Part 2-Hiccup does get stabbed in the eye by Johan, but still manages to win the battle after Toothless blasts Johan and Hiccup uses thick leather to pretty much stuff the wound.

Storms
————————————————-
“What is that?”
Normally Dagur never interrupted Boynut when he told one of his humorous anecdotes. Hiccup’s friend could be rambling and nonsensical at times, but he liked the rider’s voice.
He’d made an exception this time however, pointing at the strip of skin across his stomach that Tuff’s shirt was showing. He’d stretched his arms out wide, trying to convey just how big around the boar in his story had been.
Tuff stopped mid-sentence, realizing, and hurriedly dropped his arms, adjusting the shirt so it covered him. He wasn’t wearing his usual tunic and belt today, just a loose blue shirt and his leggings.
The Twins and Fishlegs had been assembling their winter gear from Berk and had returned to the Edge just an hour ago, far later than they were due to arrive.
Their arrival had been oddly tense and weird - Fishlegs had immediately apologized for their lateness before Astrid could demand what happened, saying that he’d been stuck choosing which books and how much ink and parchment to take. Ruff had been the very image of calm before a storm, hand on her brother’s arm, and Tuff had simply looked exhausted.
He was more animated now, with some food and warm mead inside him, and to all appearances it had just been the long ride that explained his earlier solemn mood. However, the glimpse of skin Dagur had just seen was dark and mottled. Something was wrong.
“What? Is it the color?” Tuff asked, redirecting. “I know, it doesn’t look as good on me as green. My tunic got covered with dragon slobber.”
It was a lie. The others did not appear to pick up on it, giving sympathetic groans. Snotlout commiserated by bringing up how badly Monstrous Nightmare drool stained in comparison to the drool of other dragons.
“Guys, come on, it’s not a competition,” Hiccup sighed.
“Shut up, Hiccup,” the others retorted amiably in unison. Hiccup grumbled but leaned back in his chair, scratching Toothless under the chin.
Fishlegs countered by reminding everyone that Gronckle saliva actually burned holes in things, and as things started to heat up in the dragon slobber fandom, Dagur caught sight of Tuff slinking back toward the kitchen area of the Clubhouse.
He excused himself after a moment and went into the kitchen, casually getting himself a mug to pour mead out of a barrel. Tuff wasn’t making himself any food or drink, just lurking in a dark corner. He startled when he saw Dagur but held still and said nothing, clearly hoping he went unnoticed.
It was a far cry from how friendly the boy usually acted, enough that Dagur set down his mead without drinking any and turned to face him. “You okay, Tuff?”
Tuff looked like he was ready to jump out of his skin. “I’m fine,” he almost snapped, arms crossed over his chest. “Everything is fine.”
It was clearly not.
When Dagur reached out to put a calming hand on his shoulder he flinched.
Tuff didn’t ever flinch from contact - not even from him.
Shocked, Dagur didn’t take back his hand, instead pulling him close into a worried bear hug, though gentler than the breath stealing squeezes he often inflicted on his ‘little brother’. Tuff froze tensely but didn’t jerk away or protest.
“What’s wrong?” Dagur asked firmly.
“Nothing,” came the muffled reply, though Tuff was starting to tremble. Eventually he leaned in, hiding his face against Dagur’s shoulder and returning the embrace.
“There he is,” Dagur teased gently, feeling some relief. “Where’d you go, Boynut?”
“Sorry,” Tuff sniffled. “Not trying to be a jerk, I just - I got in a bad fight. At home.”
He hadn’t been a jerk, but Dagur’s main concern was what he’d said after that. He let Tuff go, allowing him to pull back if he wanted. Tuff did, though he stayed close. “At home? Someone from home hurt you?”
Tuffnut faltered, then walked it back, sounding frantic. “I didn’t say I was hurt. It was just a bad fight. Dad said some words and Ruff stood up for me, then he said something about her and I threw a mug at him. Hard.”
Dagur remembered the red and darkening purples he’d seen across the boy’s stomach. “So you hit him with a mug and he whaled on you?”
“No. I missed him completely and it shattered. But it was his favorite mug that grandma got him.” Tuff sounded both proud and horrified at his transgression. Dagur put his hands on Tuff’s shoulders gently. He winced but this time leaned toward Dagur instead of flinching.
“What happened after the mug broke?”
Tuff bit his lip, going pale. “He got up.”
It was all Tuff could seem to say and perhaps all he needed to.
Dagur put an arm around his shoulders. “Okay. So when you guys visit Berk again for a holiday, could I come with you?  I’ve been thinking, I’ve never met everyone’s parents. Next time I think I’ll tag along to your home and meet the Thorstons.”
Tuff looked up at him, considering that. “Well, our mom would like you. She said we actually have some Berserker blood in our family. She didn’t tell me who though.”
“Really? I’m not surprised, you two definitely have some Berserker traits. Your insane bravery for one. And your amazing traps, remember when you booby trapped the whole island after we kidnapped Ruff?”
A fond grin appeared on Tuff’s face. “I do. You talk about it a lot, especially when you’ve been drinking. I think one time you may have cried.”
Dagur burst into embarrassed laughter. “Right. That was a lot of mead.” He pulled Tuff a bit closer. “Not gonna lie, I’m glad I’m on your side now, so I don’t have your destructive genius aimed at me.”
“What makes you think you’re safe from that?” Tuff snickered but he was grinning as he said it and finally relaxed. He leaned into Dagur, shoulder and side pressing against his. “So I’m taking you home to meet my parents next month when the storms let up? Is that what we’re doing?” Tuff’s tone was playfully sultry.
“Yep,” Dagur said, face turning a bit red but going with it. “Gotta let them know my intentions toward their son.”
That sent Tuff into a blushing fit but he soldiered on. “You’re going to ask Papa for my hand?”
“And he’s going to say yes and offer to pay for the wedding, right before he passes out in my Berserker chokehold,” Dagur said matter-of-factly, and Tuff wheezed, covering his face and almost beet red.
“Okay,” he managed to squeak through his fingers. “Awesome.”
He was comfortably leaning against Dagur, who took the opportunity to wrap an arm around him again. Tuff relaxed, taking his hands away from his face and allowing the touch without further comment.
For a few moments neither of them spoke, realizing their exchange might have a little more weight to it than either of them had given thought to.
“They say arnica’s good for bruises,” Dagur suggested finally. “I’ve got some salve in my bags - I use it on Shattermaster’s wing every morning. He’s been recovering quickly. You want some?”
Tuff nodded, uncharacteristically quiet and still blushing.
Dagur released him from the embrace and led him to Fishy’s hut where he was staying for the storm period. Tuffnut remained at his side the whole way there, close enough to almost trip him, like a puppy underfoot. It was adorable.
Once inside, he picked up his bag, rummaging around for the tin of salve and hoping he didn’t leave it all the way back at the stable. He heard Tuff sit down on the pallet of blankets and furs that Fishlegs had laid out for his Berserker guest.
“Is he taking good care of you? Fishlegs?”
“Yeah, he’s a good host. We’re morning meditation buddies, and he makes some really good herbal tea. Very cleansing.” His hand found the right shape and he pulled the salve out triumphantly, tossing the rucksack back into the corner.
Tuff had laid down across the pallet, looking thoughtfully up at the ceiling, his legs crossed. “Okay. Well, if he wasn’t a good host, I was going to tell you he keeps all the snacks his mom sends him in the upper left cabinet behind some books.”
Dagur snorted, amused he’d just told him anyway. He sat down on the bed, opening the tin. “I can help you put some on if you’d like me to.”
The blond rider looked at him a moment and then nodded, sitting up to take off his shirt. Dagur at once realized the reason why he had worn the shirt loose without a belt - this wasn’t just a few bruises. Wide swaths of dark red and purple wrapped around his ribs and shoulders. His back was the biggest mess of stripes, and Dagur could see older scars - from past ‘fights’ - faded beneath. Dagur swallowed.
“What did he use on you?” he asked neutrally, scooping some salve out and sitting behind Tuff to spread it across the inflamed skin. Inside him something was boiling over with dark rage but he kept his voice and his movements calm for Tuff’s sake.
“The strap for his shaving razor,” Tuff muttered. “He got the drop on me so it was easier to just hold still. If I lay still it’s over faster.” He furrowed his brow, looking angry at himself for saying that aloud. “Sorry -“
“It’s okay.”
“I sound pathetic,” Tuff argued.
“You do not. Getting hurt by family is way worse than getting hurt by strangers, because it’s not supposed to happen.” Dagur moved his hair aside, draping it forward over his shoulders so he could get the hand-sized bruise on the back of his neck. He rubbed the salve gently across it, listening carefully to make sure he wasn’t hurting him.
“Everyone gets punished by their dad once in a while,” Tuff dismissed. “I’m a trouble-maker, I get extra.”
That sentiment bothered him. Tuff shouldn’t be accepting this sort of treatment, no matter what he’d done. “I made a lot of trouble. Would it have been okay if my dad had beaten the crap out of me?” Dagur asked pointedly.
Tuff’s shoulders stiffened under his hand. “No! It wouldn’t ...” Stricken, he looked anxiously back at him over his shoulder. “Oswald didn’t ever, did he?”
“No. He didn’t,” Dagur answered quietly. “He would talk to me and make me understand what I did wrong, and I would either feel ashamed or I wouldn’t. But he never beat me.”
The worst thing Oswald had ever done was disappear, but that was a different kind hurt. He hadn’t meant to never come back, hadn’t meant for Dagur to feel like an unlovable monster whose own father didn’t want to be near him anymore.
Tuff’s dad though? That man had definitely meant to hurt him.
And judging by the blond’s sagging shoulders and look of quiet devastation, he was starting to accept that it wasn’t normal.
Dagur spread the salve everywhere he saw discoloration, then coaxed Tuff to turn around so he could get his chest and arms. He said nothing about the tear tracks on the rider’s cheeks, but they made him want to pay Berk a little visit before the storms landed and unleash some thunder and lightning of his own.
Tuff leaned into his touch as Dagur‘s fingers traced over his skin. One hand went up to move his hair again, intending to drape his braids across his back so he could get to his collarbone but it got lost and cupped his face instead.
Hitching, Tuff nuzzled his palm and kissed it and that was honestly all he needed.
Dagur capped the salve and tossed it aside on the bed, gathering Tuff against him and kissing him firmly.
The trickster kissed back enthusiastically, his long limbs wrapping around him tightly. When they came up for air, Tuff clung to him still, nuzzling his throat. He was shaking. Murmuring in concern, Dagur hugged him closer.
“You aren’t going to have to face him alone again,” he promised, kissing Tuff’s forehead. “Neither you or Ruff.” He kissed along the bridge of Tuff’s nose, caressing his face. “I’ll put the terror of Dagur into him.”
Tuff melted against him, grey eyes soft. “You don’t have to, you know. He’s got lots of mugs. Maybe one of these days, I’ll actually nail him with one.”
“Tuff,” Dagur sighed with exasperated affection. He cupped the rider’s face and kissed him. Later would be a talk about thinking better of himself.
For now, they were in his bed and together, while outside the storm-winds began to howl.

Subtlety
@ashleybenlove gave me a few ideas for a set of connected short OT6 stories (yay! thank you!), and I’m gonna post the first right now to make sure I get the other two finished. All of these will be made to be read standalone as well. Also can be considered the in the same as one of my other fic: I Listen
The prompt (highly edited, full prompt in the link): Imagine your OT+ at a party, not having told anyone about their arrangement.
Warnings: Alcohol is hinted but not really said
Wordcount: 615
And it’s under the read more.
Over three years of peace with the dragons and searching for them left few in the archipelago who didn’t know of Berk’s connection with the dragons. Stoick spent quite some time attempting to make sure that there was no panic and the other islands would not band together against Berk and its allies. When Stoick brought up the idea of hosting the leaders of the archipelago at Berk to prove they weren’t a threat, Hiccup was the first to agree, the fewer Vikings against the dragons the better. The first leaders of another island that agreed to help were Heather and Dagur; however Dagur admitted that he also just wanted to show off Sleuther and Shattermaster.
Several weeks later, as the sun took up over half the hours of the day, a familiar ship with a Skrill emblem on the sail approached the island, for once without an armada. This was the first of several ships that filled the harbor. Many of the leaders of the archipelago were shocked that two of Berk’s enemies had become some of their closest allies. Stoick hosted a welcome feast on the first official day of the meeting, plenty of food and drink to go around.
Several of the older chiefs had their heirs come with them and make friends with Berk, which led to an exhausted Hiccup since he had to entertain all of the other heirs, and they often asked for the tale of the Red Death and his other adventures with Toothless. Many of them never gave him a second glance before so he knew that they were more worried about not making Berk upset, much like Berk didn’t want to anger the Berserkers when Oswald was in charge. It was exhausting to continue to tell tales of his ‘grand adventures’ as they worried of his opinion of them.
Stoick was having much more fun as he told the other leaders of his son’s feats, proudly boasting his son’s leadership skills and battles with the Dragon Hunters. As the feast continued further into the night, a lull in the conversation led way to a question from the chief of the Meatheads, “Stoick, I do have one question, when will I be getting a message to send a wedding gift to your son?”
Stoick turned, “What do you mean?”
The other chief pointed his mug at the riders, sitting with no personal space –per the norm- and various hands tangled together, “Your son and his partners are not exactly subtle.”
Stoick sighed, “If I knew, you would know.”
Gobber laughed, “If Stoick knew, the entire world would know. He’s been trying to get Hiccup to say something for a long time!” He took a drink, “Or any of them for that matter.”
Stoick turned his face to the table, “I thought their defeat of Viggo would at least get one of them to say something, with how it went at the Volcano at least.”
Dagur shook his head with a laugh, “It took them this long to realize they were into each other, I saw it when I first saw them on the Reaper.”
The conversation moved on and Stoick was able to take a break to talk to Hiccup about his ability to be subtle and Hiccup and Fishlegs turned bright red. Astrid shifted away slightly as Snotlout refused to care and continued holding onto Hiccup’s hand, bringing it to his face to kiss the back of it. Hiccup spluttered at his boyfriend. Stoick laughed heartily before leaving his son and hopefully future in-laws.
A crash reverberated around the Great Hall and Stoick shook his head before taking a drink, he worried about the twins sometimes.

5, 6, 1 for the ask game? If it’s not too much trouble ^^
1. Which part of the series was your introduction to HTTYD? How old were you when you first became a fan?
i rmr it pretty well. i was abt 11 years old & my mom found the first movie on comcast on demand & wanted to find a movie for us we (my siblings & i) hadn't seen so she chose it. i rmr the year prior with all the commercials on tv & stuff & was like hey!! i rmr wanting to see this! cool!! and i rlly liked the movie!!!!! my full obsession, however, didn't start until abt a year later when she brought home this pack of the first 6 books (that's all that was available at the time!) & reading through them i rewatched the movie & we had it on dvd by that point and that was it. the rest is history
5. What type of dragon do you think best matches your personality?
oh gosh. the impulse to say my fave but whispering deaths don't rlly "match" me personality wise. tbh a gronckle, me thinks. with a personality like meatlug or shattermaster. :') they're such goofy goobers but they're also rlly sweet & i am so soft for that LOL. they remind me of the dog i grew up with with how snorty they are & the way they wag their tails :'))
6. What are your favourite ships in the fandom and why?
haaaa.
snotstrid... IDK their chemistry is just??? i love how they constantly bicker & snotlout is just a piece of shit & it causes astrid to retaliate & treat him like that even when he's not actively being a piece of shit which pisses him off & yet they always somehow end up by each other or saving each other much to astrid's chagrin half the time & then snotlout's confusion UGH ESP SNOTLOUT'S ANGELS the nose flick & then astrid admitting she doesn't hate him & his FACE HIS FUCKING FACE he's so got a genuine crush on her but doesn't know how to Behave & i love them getting together & then breaking up & for astrid it's smth she looks back on fondly but never wants to go back to while snotlout is stuck adding her to his list of ppl being the one that got away & yearning..... they're also so funny together & i feel like if they're ever on the same page they're so powerful & it's scary LOL
fishlout used to be my fave & i still love it. rtte spent more time building their relationship to each other than either of them with ruffnut & we all saw the potential of what could have been :') it can easily fall into the jock x nerd thing but it's more than that to me bc while fishlegs is anxious he doesn't take snotlout's shit lying on his back (esp after gem of a different color) & by rtte fishlegs is rolling his eyes & quipping back & it's just forever this contest of who comes out on top & then u have thw whole thor bonecrusher thing & it can so easily be an exploration in snotlout's bisexuality (and fishlegs'!) esp after return of thor bonecrusher when snotlout is just SO happy fishlegs is back to the point where he gives him a hug (and was like :D woah when fishlegs bodied a dude to protect him) & they def had a brief stint after that. they don't talk abt it. it's only between them... snotlout yearns so badly...
i'm realizing my fave ship is anything that'll make snotlout yearn & wish he could have someone as all of his friends find their ppl or are comfortable with themselves enough to not need a romantic partner LMAO
i like a lot more ships than i talk abt tbh!! i just like taking characters like they're my dolls and making them kiss lol. heathstrid, ruffther, hiccstrid, heathlegs, rufflout, rufflegs, tufflegs, eretlout, etc!! i like the art & fics ppl make abt tufflout but it's just not my thing (if that makes sense!!) i also like lot of the poly ships, too! literally i just thrive off making this group of teens who probably spend too much time together but don't rlly have anyone else to spend time with have relationship drama LOL

What do you think of Snotlout's and Tuffnut's improvement throughout Race To The Edge season 4?
*SPOILERS THROUGHOUT*Well, while they're still pretty much the same characters we've grown to know, there were definitely a few good moments of character development for these two. First, with Snotlout. There are only two episodes that I can remember a good amount of development for him in: "Not Lout" and "Saving Shattermaster". "Not Lout" is obviously the biggest one, as it was mainly centered around him and how he was trying to impress Spitelout by becoming leader of the Riders. He has been pushed a lot, and it seems like no matter what he does, he's never good enough - much like how Hiccup felt in the first movie. He starts believing that if he doesn't do as his dad wants and become leader, he'll have to live the life of a homeless peasant. Wanting to take leadership on his own, he starts ruining everything for everyone during one of the battles against the Dragon Hunters, and as the Riders point out, they almost lost the battle because of him and his recklessness. Afterwards, he tries to become leader by slowly learning all of the skills and traits necessary, like gaining people's trust and learning about plants. Most of the gang is unhappy about this, but Hiccup lets Snotlout do his thing, as he figures he just needs a confidence boost and will be back to his normal self in no time. Meanwhile, he has Snotlout lead a practice run of their new mission. You can see Snotlout worrying about being a failure, as his dream and his father's words echo in his head. When he screws up the mission, he realizes what a failure he truly is (or thinks he is) and, as Hiccup said, grounds himself indefinitely. He starts to think of himself as a true failure, and that his life should be nothing but the life of a peasant. He doesn't stop thinking this even when Hookfang's holding him over a cliff. He doesn't snap himself out of it until he sees the dragon root growing in complete sunlight, and he realizes that his friends' mission is a trap, and he goes to save them all from being killed. I think this was a very important development for Snotlout. We had seen how his father treated him, but we never got to see how this affected Snotlout mentally and emotionally until now (from what I remember - correct me if I'm wrong). He also has some development in "Saving Shattermaster", as he goes to extreme lengths to try and become Mala's king and even fights off deadly eels, but nothing as great as in "Not Lout". As for Tuffnut, well, there are some episodes where he is his usual goofy self, like in "The Longest Day". But he also had some character development, like in "Gruff Around the Edges" and "Twintuition". I don't think I can ever fully put into words how much I loved the interaction between Gruff and Tuff in "Gruff Around the Edges". Tuff initially thinks of Gruff as an idol, and he looked up to his cousin (as he mentioned a few times in that episode). It's not until he gets knocked out and tied up wearing Gruff's clothes that he realizes what Gruffnut's really like. Him shouting his cousin's name further confirms this. Then when he fought Gruff on top of Barf and Belch, that was great, too. It's not often we see Tuff fight, and this just showed how strong he is and how he'll do anything for what he loves. This really was great development for Tuff. In "Twintuition", he shows a great example of something everyone had been saying this season: "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few." He does this first by going after the map instead of getting back Macey, and then again when he sacrifices Macey to stop the water from filling in and drowning all of his friends. This again proves how he'll do anything for his friends and sister, to help and protect them. There was a lot of good development for both of them this season, and I really enjoyed watching it. I especially like how we're digging deeper into the lives of the others and showing that they're not just there to be comedic relief characters or whatever. They have their moments, too, and they're smarter than some might think. I think that's great, and I hope we see more of that in the next seasons.

The Dagala Dilemma
Dagur and Mala are two of my favorite characters. They're also my favorite couple in Dragons. That said, I don't like how RTTE handled the relationship.
Tumblr media
These characters have one episode of interacting before they decided to get married (two if you include "Saving Shattermaster" where cloaked Dagur stopped the Hunters from attacking Mala and Throk. Too bad that was never mentioned. What a cute way to meet your future S.O!). Then one more, ONE more episode really which was when they announced the engagement. I don't think the very last episode counts for much because they didn't exchange lines. Just one line, then a kiss on the cheek. Somehow, we didn't even see these two kiss on the lips since Hiccup and Astrid decided to make out at the wedding instead.
It's a shame because I've seen a lot of people dislike this ship and I think that's a reason why. The show never tries to demonstrate how they work. Just argue, bond over the twins' mediation methods, then get engaged and married. Life is short, but...rushing that a little, you two. If Viking unions are forever, that's all the more reason you want to make sure you know someone. Even in the engagement episode, we didn't see them interact much. They announced it, then they pulled Dagur away to drop off metal. What's worse is that I really think they could go the distance (cue Hercules) with their relationship. I can genuinely see them growing old together, having happiness and some grandkids by then. You'd just never know from the show. Here's why I think it could work:
For starters, I love that it gives Dagur an opportunity to be around someone who doesn't know him as his bad self. He will always have to prove himself to the others. There's nothing he can do to make them forget who he was and they shouldn't. He killed an entire island of people. Dagur really was a villain. He's also really a better person who has put his life on the line for them several times, with or without them hating him. Mala gives him a clean slate. She doesn't peek think back on the time he almost killed her because he never did. In their entire time of knowing each other, he's been Dagur the Deranged, but he's also been a good guy. He doesn't have to try to stay on his best behavior to make her know he's better, he can just be himself.
Along with that, I think they'd be good influences on each other. Mala seems like the type who doesn't like to show much emotion. She is the unfazed, calm, and strong queen of the Defenders. She tries to contain what she's feeling. One of the examples of this that I loved was when the Riders first met her and she thought they stole the Great Protector. Mala is in such a state of rage that she breaks the arrow in one hand as she processes what happened. Hmm, rage. Wonder who understands that...
Tumblr media
Dagur's a lot of things, but shy about his emotions isn't one of then. Even in the first gif with them together, we see Mala really happy and laughing. I don't think there's another time in the show where she's laughed at anything. I could see Dagur helping her realize that being strong and stone-like aren't the same. She can be furious, overjoyed, sad, or whatever else she's feeling and still an amazing leader worthy of respect. He'll just be there to help her through it.
Mala is also calm and strong enough to match Dagur. She's not going to cave to his idea of having the kids of the island start juggling swords. I could see her being patient and considerate by explaining which actions are potentially dangerous/harmful for someone. She wouldn't make him feel crazy or foolish either. She'd just help him as she learned to understand his mind. With her being less easy to anger, Mala could be the voice of reason while Dagur is trying to calm down. I could even see them doing meditating together.
They're also both violent. Mala was ready to KILL Hiccup and the others. She made that very clear. It's something they have in common that they both planned to kill the poor trainer who's on everyone's hit list. I think it's overlooked how ruthless she can be. This is perfect for Dagur. He can get some of his violence out as they do couple battling and Mala won't look at him like he's some monster. They'll be right at each other's side, killing whoever dared to get close.
Tumblr media
So, I really think this is a couple that could work. I wish they got more screentime, but at least fanfics and headcanons can fill in the rest. And I still mad we didn't see them do the dance of blades, but I'll get over it...maybe.

Hot Rocks, ch1??
I know I said in a tag I’d be writing tonight, but I did not write all of this at once like please I just topped off a WIP I had lying around and figured out what to do with it. When Hiccup shows up is when I started tonight. You can tell since the quality goes down. I had been tweaking the other 3/4th for some weeks last year.
Less of a chapter and more of a HEY ARE YOU INTERESTED!?? thing.
unbeta’d. I won’t add this to my ao3 unless someone asks.
The sun was hovering just above the ocean horizon, its warm rays breaking through the heavy, dull clouds that blanketed the sky. The first snowfall of the season didn't even stick to the ground of the Edge, but the paths were already coated in ice.
Snotlout didn't feel any of the growing cold, not with an oven of a dragon to his back. Hookfang’s long neck curled around his human and his head rested upon Snotlout’s lap. Their soft snores echo off the walls of the barn, mingling with the tapping of little snowflakes against the roof. Berk never experiences gentle autumn weather like this, and everyone has been lazing at a snail's pace because of the change. Even morning-bird Astrid, who nearly slept-in.
Of course Snotlout loves it, he’s been getting plenty of “beauty sleep” these past few weeks.
He hears the footsteps of a person entering the barn, and cracks an eye open to see. Dagur's back is to him, unarmored and striking with muscle, scars, and freckles. Okay, Snotlout is fully awake now. He shuts his eyes and pulls his helmet over his face, pretending to be asleep before Dagur notices.
Hookfang finally wakes up to Dagur's presence just as it looks like the ex-chief is about to leave. The dragon lifts his head off Snotlout's lap, but Snot quickly grabs Hookfang's face and pulls him back down. "I'm not done napping yet," he whispers as quietly and as sternly as he can. Hookfang does not look amused in the slightest. The testy dragon shakes Snotlout's hands off his muzzle and he stands up.
Dagur is alerted to the movement of the large dragon and turns around. Snotlout feels like burying his face into his helmet again. He tries to avoid looking at the other man, and instead glares at Hookfang for blowing his cover.
"Snot-hat and Shookdang!" Dagur smiles a bit tensely.
Hookfang is visibly offended at the misnaming. The proud dragon blows a puff of smoke in Dagur's face.
Snotlout grins, mischievously pleased at Dagur's expense. He crosses his arms. "It's Snotlout and Hookfang."
"Right.” Dagur rubs the back of his neck. “I should remember that."
For whatever reason the three of them had never gotten fully acquainted, and for all of younger Snotlout's secret pining after the Berserker chief's son, they had never spoken much before the.. dragon everything. And Dagur’s madness kinda ruined any chance of close ties.
An awkward atmosphere hangs in the crisp air as if the two were complete strangers stuck in a room together. Snotlout wishes it would dissipate, because the longer it lasts the more he's aware of how naked Dagur's torso is.
Dagur clears his throat. “I was actually looking for Shattermaster, have you seen him around the barn? Or have you just been asleep this whole day.”
“No, I haven’t seen him,” the insulted Rider snaps back. “Maybe you should take better care of your dragon and not leave the rest of The Edge to raise it.”
Dagur’s eyes go sharp and it sends a thrill through Snotlout. Of course insulting an annoyed Berserker is never a bright idea, but Snotlout hasn’t been known for having bright ideas. He watches as Dagur’s face goes from crazy to calm within a breath; and he can’t help but feel a little disappointed at that, and yet his interest in Dagur has just perked up again.
“I was with him and Fishlegs with Meatlug just a while before,” Dagur says in a normal tone. Or whatever ‘normal’ is for Dagur the Deranged. “We were relaxing in Fishlegs’ tranquil garden, enjoying this clear day together…”
Snotlout guffaws, the sound sharper than he intended.
“Why were you half naked in Fishlegs’ garden, Dags?” The question also sharp. He raises his brow at him, pointedly looks the other Viking over (suppressing the blush fighting to form on his face and the jealousy sitting in the pit of his stomach).
“Don’t … call me that.” Dagur gives him a rude look before continuing on. “I had my back turned to Shattermaster, and he must have wondered off! I looked for him at the rock piles, even snuck over to Meatlug’s special granite pile. Not even the sign of a munch on a pebble. I figured he couldn't have run off too far. Oh, but he’s such a good little dragon, why would he have even run off in the first place?”
Snotlout rolls his eyes. “Hookfang and I don’t have all day for you, y’know.”
Dagur mocks Snotlout’s eye roll and crossed arms. “Ah, yes, don't want to interrupt your valuable beauty sleep.”
“Hey!” Snotlout points accusingly in Dagur’s face. He stops short when he realizes “… That’s exactly what that is!”
A grin cuts across Dagur’s face, sharp and hysterical.
“Whatever,” Snotlout huffs out. He turns away from the other man, giving him the cold shoulder and glaring back, hoping to look intimidating, though it probably looks like he's just pouting. He sighs. “Fine, I guess we can help you look for your dragon, if no one else is available,” he adds sardonically. “Just… Put on a shirt, or something.”
Of course no one else was available to help Dagur.
“Heather and the twins already left to scout near Fireworm Island,” Hiccup explains to them. He’s all suited up, laying out enough dry food on the hearth table to last an overnight flight.
“And you're headed to Berk,” Dagur offers. Snotlout eyes him from his peripheral sight. He’s clearly anxious, with his big hands set on his hips, mindlessly tapping his foot. The shadows from the fire deepen the creases in his frown.
“Yes,” Hiccup says as he starts to pack three small saddlebags with the perishables. “Word just came in of a union between the Ingermans and the Hoffersons,” he smiles.
“Aw, what!” Snotlout slaps his palm against his forehead. “I can't believe this!”
Hiccup blinks at him. “Snotlout, it’s not Astrid and Fishlegs, it’s different people.”
He rolls his eyes. “Obviously I know that, Hiccup. But this means Astrid and Fish-face are going with you! You’re all leaving me behind and I’m the only one to look for Shattermaster with crazy-eyes over here!”
He can practically feel Dagur’s crazy-eyed stare burning the back of his head.
Hiccup lets out a small, tired sigh through his nose. He shakes his head and finishes packing by adding a sheep-stomach waterbag, filled to the brim with clean spring water, to each saddlebag husbanding perishables. He picks up all three bags before turning back to the two irritated Vikings before him.
“He doesn't have to follow me after Shatty,” Dagur cuts in before Hiccup starts giving orders. “It’s not like I’d want his company anyway.”
Snotlout whirls around. “What’s that supposed to mean, ex-chief?” He glowers at him, “I’m great company!”
“Snotlout, you know the island better than Dagur,” Hiccup starts, “and Dagur knows his dragon better than anyone. If he’s wanting to look for Shattermaster, you and Hookfang take him. No Jorgenson-but’s.”
Snotlout moves his glower to his feet as Hiccup moves out of the Clubhouse.
The island authority stops to look back and adds one last thing, “and Dagur,” he says, “don’t kill my cousin while I’m gone. I know it can be tempting.”
Dagur looks at Snotlout, and behind Hiccup’s back, he sticks out his tongue at him.

Dagur’s Not Dead
So super sorry this is almost a week late. I have been working and school had me busy. My Secret Odin @hornsda. Gonna let you know know that I have been told that my fanfics can be mainly fluff. Hope you like it. Again, so so so so so sorry this is almost a week late.
Ruffnut paces around her room nervously. She stops when she hears someone enter. Cluck. Oh, it's just Chicken. "Why are you pacing?" Tuffnut's voice asks her. "No reason," she lies turning to face her twin brother. "I may be dumb, but I can tell when something's wrong. You aren't in danger are you? If you are then we have to let Hiccup and Astrid know," Tuff tells her. "No! I'm not in danger. I can't tell you what's wrong," she says quietly. "Ruffnut!" Snotlout's voice whispers. "Snotlout? Why's he looking for you?" Tuffnut wonders to mostly himself. "I am going to find your birthday present and he's going to help," Ruffnut lies. "That's why you seem nervous? I thought it was because you were going to do something like go on a date," Tuffnut laughs. Ruffnut fake laughs with him before running out of the room only to unbraid her hair and running to meet Snotlout by Hookfang. “Why are you dressed up?” Snotlout asks Ruffnut before looking around for help from- from no one. He felt nervous for the first time in his life.
“Because last night Astrid went to Hiccup's house with her hair like this, and for the first time we saw her without that stupid headband on because they did Thor knows what and walked hand in hand over to the Great Hall. I can't be the only one who noticed,” Ruffnut responds feeling the butterflies in her stomach.
“You're right. I guess I thought that it wouldn't be this simple. Ruffnut, I have been rejected by Astrid, then Heather, and also by you for the longest time. To be honest the only reason that I have ever helped you was so that I could have what Hiccup has with Astrid. One romantic flight and she's head over heels for the guy. Heather is just like that. She fell for the smart guy not in a relationship, but then I was left thinking about how I'm alone before I thought about liking you. I've known you my whole life. Growing up you were practically like my sister,” Snotlout confesses.
“I should have thought more about this. I have this feeling that he's going to propose to her soon. This is our first date for Thor's sake!” Ruffnut sighs.
“True. Ruffnut, what are we even doing? What if this ruins our friendship. To be honest I-,” Snotlout begins to say before he is stopped by Ruffnut kissing him.
“I wanted to see if it would work. Hiccup does it with Astrid when he does something stupid,” Ruffnut reminds him.
“Who have you ever kissed?” Snotlout asks.
“That was it. You were my first kiss,” she confesses.
“Wow. To be honest it was mine too. Ha, when I was 13 or 14 before we found out that Hiccup was training Toothless I thought it would be Astrid, but after Heather left and I got over both her and Astrid, I saw you. You have been one of my best friends who also happens to be a girl. I never realized what I've been missing out on. You dragged me all over the edge looking for the Lycanwing, and I could only dream about someone doing that for me,” Snotlout tells the young viking girl. She feels herself blush a slight pink.
“Is that Dagur?” Ruffnut asks with her smile fading.
“You kids grow up so fast. So, over Astrid and Heather? Good, because neither of them actually liked you, but you two are adorable! Anyway, Snot-kid where is brother Hiccup?” Dagur asks nonchalantly. Heather had left to rule the Berserker tribe almost a year and a half ago, and Dagur had been thought to have been dead for the past two and a half years.
“At his house,” Snotlout responds terrified. The only thought in his tiny brain was that Dagur is a ghost wanting revenge on his cousin. Truth be told Hiccup took Astrid to the Great Hall so they could hide from both their parents and have some peace and quiet for their make out session.
“You're alive?! For Thor's sake your sister couldn't think about you without bursting into tears! What in Odin's name possessed you to do that? Play dead then reappear two and a half years after you disappeared? What about your dragon?” Ruffnut interrogates.
“Wow. I love this side of you. It makes you seem kind of sexy,” Snotlout blurts out.
“Ewww! I've never wanted to hear Snotlout say those words,” Astrid's voice says. The trio turn to see Hiccup and Astrid coming towards them holding hands. Their hair a bit disheveled.
“Did you two-?” Dagur starts to ask.
“You're alive? Dagur, you scared the crap out of us when you took on Viggo's men by your self! What was going through your mind?! You better not have come here to Berk first instead of-,” Hiccup begins to lecture.
“Wait, Heather isn't here? Where is she then?” Dagur follows up.
“Berserker Island. She wanted to lead them and let them know what happened to their leader and why he went AWOL for a few years. She said that it was terrible, and it's going to take lots of work to earn the tribe's trust again. She said that you leaving was probably the stupidest thing you ever did before you died,” Astrid informs him in a voice barely above a whisper.
“Snot-hat, you and the two girls come with me to see Heather,” Dagur orders Snotlout.
“Dagur, I will not let you take Astrid with you,” Hiccup says defending his girlfriend.
“Relax. I'll leave Blondie with you. I meant this girl that Snot-hat is with and her twin,” Dagur assures Hiccup.
“I am a girl, yes, but my twin is a guy. Despite the way he acts,” Ruffnut informs Dagur.
“You're brother and sister? Oh,” Dagur realizes.
“Snotlout, you get Tuff and I guess the take two of our date will have to happen after we get back. Astrid, I need help with getting my hair done. I don't understand how you were okay with your hair being like this that day you went dancing in the rain with Hiccup,” Ruffnut sighs.
“It's called, I don't always have my hair braided unless I go out. Unless it's to see Hiccup. It started when we were at the edge after Mala,” Astrid confesses.
“So, did you two have-,” Dagur starts to say before Hiccup interrupts him.
“No, and we aren't discussing that now,” he says. Dagur shrugs it off before Snotlout and Tuffnut catch up with the gang and Astrid finishes the quick girl talk with Ruffnut. Dagur lets out a small whistle before an energetic Gronkle jumps out from behind a house knocking both Hiccup and Astrid. Both of them blush a shade of pink before Astrid sits up and Toothless comes running to protect his master.
“See? Shattermaster is fine. It took me so long to come see anyone because he and I were captured by Viggo for three months, and after we escaped the both of us were left for dead because of the decision I made to save you. I returned to The Edge and did what I could to get us back to health, but it took a while. I only stayed there because I couldn't figure out how to confront you all. I'll admit it, I was scared. I kept putting it off until I remembered that Heather is my sister, and I don't want to die alone. I want to be with my family, and maybe get what Hiccup has with Princess kicks-everyone's-butts,” Dagur admits.
“Why does everyone want that? I heard that from Ruffnut and now you,” Snotlout complains.
“Why are you referring me to that?!” Astrid asks.
“Sh! Nobody cares about that answer,” Dagur announces. Astrid reaches for her ax only to find it missing. She remembers leaving it at Hiccup's before they snuck off to the Great Hall.
“Let's get going,” Dagur orders mounting Shattermaster.
The four leave for Berserker Island and the silence fills with so much silence that the level of awkward makes it to the point you could cut through it with a freshly sharpened ax.
“So, Snot-hat and you are a thing now?” Dagur finally asks Ruffnut.
“What?!” Ruffnut gapes looking to her right.
“I saw that kiss. It looked like it meant something. So, are you and that Snot-guy a thing?” Dagur repeats. Ruffnut turns away.
“What kiss? Ruffnut hasn't even had her first kiss,” Tuffnut laughs mockingly.
“Would you shut up!”she barks. Tuffnut and Dagur stare at the young viking girl in shock and awe. Tuffnut couldn't believe his twin, who is an entire five minutes younger than him, and told him almost everything.
“You kept this secret from me! It's like I don't even know you!” Tuffnut responds dramatically.
“It happened today. I watched her kiss your best friend,” Dagur gossips fueling to the twin drama fire.
“That is why you've been distant! You madam are with my best friend!” Tuffnut argues.
“Wait! We're best friends? After I lied to you about being your sister's first boyfriend?” Snotlout asks genuinely confused.
“This is turning into a stupid teenage romance! Makes me sick,” Ruffnut groans.
“At least it's entertaining,” Dagur encourages with a huge, evil grin on his face.
“You are despicable,” Ruffnut informs the once villain.
“I know,” he states simply.
“I hate you, and can't wait for you to get back to Berserker Island,” she says looking at him once again. He gives her his deranged smile in which she ignores.
“You know you love me,” he tells her.
“I love you like Hiccup loves the idea of Snotlout kissing his fiancee. When we were about 14 or 15 Snotlout annoyed Astrid so much that she had pretended to like him, and it creeped him out so much that he admitted to being scared. On top of that it even grossed out Hiccup,” Ruffnut informs Dagur. The smiles on his face disappears.
“Lie,” he states simply as they land.
“It's true! I still have nightmares that she's going to do that just to scare me,” Snotlout whimpers. The smile returns to Dagur's face as he tries not to laugh.
“That scrawny blonde scared you?! You are such a chicken! I'll bet that when Hiccup was beginning to train Toothless he was less afraid,” Dagur laughs.
“Duh, if he was the first to train a dragon he had to be brave or him and Astrid wouldn't be together,” Tuffnut states dumbly.
“How do you figure?” Dagur asks.
“Well, if Hiccup wasn't brave enough to train dragons then he'd be dead,” Tuffnut reasons.
“Valid point girl twin,” Dagur compliments.
“That's my brother, I'm the girl twin,” Ruffnut states.
“Everyone is always mixing us up. Hey, Snotlout! Remember the time that you said something, then I insulted you, you grabbed me by the shirt with your face about to pound me, and then you asked if I was the boy twin. I was all like, 'no', in a high pitch voice,” Tuffnut reminisces.
“I do remember that. Wait! You- you insulted me and got away without me pounding you?” Snotlout wondered with his voice getting louder with each word.
“Yep,” Tuffnut informs his best friend.
“Sh! Do you guys here anything?” Dagur questions the group.
“What are we listening for? I want to know if we're waiting for an ambush or not. If we aren't then I can scream as Snotlout chases me,” Tuffnut declares.
“I can't hear anything!” Ruffnut whines.
“That's the point! When I was growing up people would stay up until the middle of the night, and when I became chief we'd stay up later. It is barely sundown and the village is quiet. Something must be wrong,” Dagur panics running towards the Berserker Great Hall where the building is quiet.
The gang enters expecting the place to find the place war torn, and the people in there to be cowering in fear because of an attack. Instead there was a party that had been paused as if it were a surprise party, and they were deciding on if they should check to see if it were the guest of honor or not. The look on everyone's face was as if they saw a ghost. Heather whips her head around to knock her brother unconscious for a moment.
“What in Thor's name is wrong with you?! You guys scared the crap out of us! So much for my- who did I just punch in the face?” Heather whimpers as she begins to stiffen up.
“Your brother. He came to Berk thinking that you stayed there, but as soon as we said that you weren't he insisted that me, Tuffnut, and Snotlout come here to see you,” Ruffnut announces. Heather drops her glass and the shattering of it as it collides with the floor wakes Dagur up. He bolts up and looks at his baby sister rubbing his jaw.
“Did you get stronger? Way to treat me after I come to see you,” he complains.
“Sweet baby of Thor! You're freaking alive?! And to think that all this time I thought that this Island was going to need a new chief because you abandoned them, and Fishlegs was beginning to doubt our relationship,” Heather huffs.
“You're dating him?!” Dagur asks in hopes it wasn't what he heard.
“In all fairness, we doubted Hiccup and Astrid's relationship from the beginning and now they're engaged,” Ruffnut interjects.
“He's engaged to her? They grow up so fast,” Dagur says.
“Who cares that they're finally getting married? You're alive!” Heather exclaims.
“I know I'm alive, yes,” Dagur mocks.
“See, if I ever use sarcasm Ruffnut will get mad and punch me. Half of the time it's in the face,” Tuffnut tells the group.
“Let's go back to Berk and you can live with Fishlegs, after you get married, and we can see Hiccup's wedding with Astrid, and I can continue dragon training,” Dagur suggests.
“Very rarely in life there is someone with a happily ever after. Think about it. Hiccup thought his happily ever after was his mom and dad living on Berk together, and living happily ever after with Astrid. We've been to almost every tragedy thrown at us, Stoick died in the mean time, and it took him a year after Dagur's “death” to have enough courage to become official. It took him another six months to get enough courage to finally pop the question. Astrid thought she'd grow up with a heroic family, but then the Flightmare freaking freezes her uncle. I never thought we'd be training dragons, but hey, things change. I bet Heather thought she'd live with her adopted parents forever and be happy,” Ruffnut reasons. The group looks at her in shock and awe.
“How did you know?” Heather questions.
“I'm not as stupid as I look or act. I may be a Thorston, the younger one by five minutes, but I'm still smarter than Tuffnut,” Ruffnut insists.
“Hey!” Tuffnut calls out in offense.
“Let's just get back to Berk. Fishlegs isn't expecting me, and I want to surprise him before he starts planning a move here,” Heather sighs. She leaves to grab her things leaving the four alone to wait for her and Windshear.
“I never thought I'd be back here,” Dagur mumbles.
“Never say never,” Snotlout says sounding sinister.
“Astrid said never after you said that last time didn't she?” Ruffnut laughs.
“Hiccup, Astrid, and I were the only ones there. How did you know?” Snotlout questions.
“Nope! It was after you three found out Tuff “married” Fishlegs and I,” Ruffnut reminds him.
“Oh yeah,” he replies dumbly.
The five go back to Berk as nightfall has fallen. Ruffnut and Snotlout watch Fishlegs and Heather's hug become a kiss, and Hiccup and Astrid act like it's new years.
“New Year's was a few days ago. Get a room!” Ruffnut teases.
“We never got our New Year's kiss like they did,” Snotlout whispers.
“And just to think I thought happily ever after was pathetic,” Ruffnut mutters before kissing him on the cheek.
“So. Are we gonna be Berk's next cute couple?” Snotlout jokes.
“You'll never beat us,” Hiccup says with his arm around Astrid's waist.
“Never say never,” Snotlout challenges.
“Never!” Hiccup and Astrid say in unison. Snotlout gives the happy couple a dirty look.
“Shut up, Hiccup and Astrid,” he mumbles. It comes out sounding like 'Hiccstrid' though.
“Did you say “Hiccstrid”? What does that even mean?” Hiccup asks.
“It sounds like our names together. I like it. If you take Snotlout and Ruffnut's names you can make a couples name for them too,” Astrid suggests.
“What is something- wait! When we first started dragon racing you both were team Hiccstrid while the twins and I were team Snot-nuts. Ruffnut and I will be Snot-nut,” Snotlout declares.
“Or! How about something nut disturbing sounding. Rufflout seems pretty cute,” Astrid announces.
“How did we forget when dragon racing started? Team Hiccstrid before you broke your arm,” Hiccup reminds Astrid.
“Stupid Snotlout also was the reason I broke my arm,” Astrid remembers.
“Get a room!” Snotlout complains once more.
Suddenly there is a horn that blows on the far side of Berk meaning only one thing. Dragon racing. The group splits into couples. Hiccup and Astrid, Snotlout and Ruffnut, Fishlegs with Heather leaving Tuffnut and Dagur to feel third wheel and awkwardly work together. The group races off and eagerly race off to win the Dragon Race.

Match Made in Valhalla
A very underrated duo to me in RTTE (spoilers) is Dagur and Sleuther.
Tumblr media
The way Dagur got both dragons was honestly perfect to me. He started of with a Gronckle because no one in their right mind would give him a dangerous dragon. Then, what does he do? He Dagurs all over the place and somehow makes a Gronckle cool enough to even outmaneuver a Razorwhip. After that, he gets his first already cool dragon. That's fun as it is, but the emotional side makes it so much better.
They're kindred souls. It's possible that Sleuther (or Strykie as I prefer since Dagur always calls him that) used to be less violent before he was captured, but that's not the Triple Strykes we know. We see the one who is ready to kill anyone if he needs to. No hesitation, just violence. Does this not sound like early Dagur? On top of it, they both had adjustment periods with the Riders. Strykie was so difficult for them to train and Dagur still isn't someone you can really tell to not do something if he wants to. Putting these two together shouldn't work. If anything, it should cause them to just be more aggressive since neither really wants to stop, but look at that adorable picture. They're able to understand each other more than the other dragons or Vikings could. As great as Shattermaster was, we didn't see these tender moments between him and Dagur. They were great friends and he was a great starter dragon, but these Dagur and Strykie can relate to the anger they have inside and help keep it down.
We've already seen that Dagur has nightmares. A headcanon of mine is that they both do. Whenever fatigue hits them so much that they can't remain awake to avoid that anymore, one stays guard for the other. When Strykie has a nightmare about his time being forced to fight, Dagur can soothingly wake him up and assure him that he's safe now. When Dagur has a nightmare about (pick a topic. There's plenty to choose from), Strykie is able to do the same.
Also, there's the added cuteness of how they met. Dagur and Shattermaster saved Strykie from getting attacked, then he returned the favor. Strykie is actually the first anything (dragon or character) to choose Dagur, but he did. He waved his stinger and sort of said, "We're friends now." It even took Dagur off guard, but I still think that little moment of Strykie letting him know that he can ride on his back and Dagur realizing that he can is adorable. If I can find an image later, I'll try to add it, but it might have that little search thingy from Pinterest if I can't spot it on Google.
I wish this had been explored some more, so a future fic of mine is going to delve into how they can help one another in these ways. I don't think there's anyone else who could truly get it the way that they would. None of the other humans or reptiles have been prisoners the way that they both have or have done things that would haunt them. Who knows how many dragons Strykie was forced to kill and what mental space he put himself in to be able to stomach it day after day. We already know Dagur has guilt he'll never recover from since he's killed an island + worth of people. Their other friends could support them as they try to change, but they're the only ones who could just look at one another and already know what's being felt because they'd each felt it before too.
