The hunt for potentially habitable rocky planets in our galaxy has been the holy grail of exoplanet studies for decades. While the discovery of more than 5,900 exoplanets in more than 4,400 planetary systems has been a remarkable achievement, only a small fraction (217) have been confirmed as terrestrial—aka rocky or "Earth-like." Furthermore, obtaining accurate information on a rocky exoplanet's atmosphere is very difficult, since potentially habitable rocky planets are much smaller and tend to orbit closer to their stars.

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope’s near-infrared view of the Cat’s Paw Nebula reveals mini “toe beans.” Massive young stars are carving the gas and dust while their bright starlight is producing a bright nebulous glow. Eventually this turbulent region will quench star formation.

I AM NORMAL ABOUT THE JAMES WEBB SPACE TELESCOPE

THESE ARE REAL IMAGES. NOT ARTIST RENDITIONS OR ANYTHING ELSE.
REAL. ACTUAL. PHOTOS.
HIGH DETAIL INFRARED PHOTOS OF DISTANT GALAXIES COLLIDING. OF THE CENTERS OF GALAXIES.
OF GRAVITATIONAL LENSING
OF WHAT IS QUITE POSSIBLY ONE OF THE FIRST GALAXIES EVER FORMED AND THE FARTHEST EVER DETECTED.
I AM NORMAL ABOUT THIS

Have you ever met a galaxy face-to-face?
As part of the Physics at High Angular resolution in Nearby GalaxieS (PHANGS) program, the James Webb Space Telescope imaged 19 nearby spiral galaxies, including NGC 1566 seen here. This galaxy is located 60 million light-years away in the constellation Dorado.
Webb’s images of stunning spirals like NGC 1566 complement existing PHANGS data, which include observations from the Hubble Space Telescope and ground-based telescopes.
This image shows two different views of NGC 1566, with Hubble’s visible and ultraviolet light view at top left and Webb’s near- and mid-infrared light view at bottom right. These two distinct views of the same galaxy contain different details, helping astronomers achieve a more well-rounded understanding of galactic structures: https://bit.ly/4jq4vQn

The Deep Webb
A YTP of NASA's 2022 live presentation showcasing the first images taken from the James Webb Space Telescope.
This monumental feat of human discovery was presented to the world in the form of a scuffed livestream where technical errors abound and production repeatedly failed to think on their feet to remedy issues as they came up. Peppered with some charmingly awkward/out-of-touch performances by the various presenters, most of which are astronomers and engineers whom I have the deepest respect for despite it all.
I watched this event as it was broadcast and immediately knew it would make for an excellent YTP source. I was so very correct, and my biggest regret was sitting on it for two years rather than working with it immediately.
