So my county (Orange County, New York) is in a drought rn with no real end in sight; it's been two and half months since we got any substantial rain, and in that time it's only lightly drizzled for a maybe a few hours, like twice.
There is currently a wildfire burning close by, which has burned over 2000 acres already and was started by a guy in New Jersey illegally firing tracer bullets (which contain magnesium) at the Central Jersey Firing Range. (He has since been charged with arson.)
This morning, the sky was red at sunrise. The air quality is getting steadily worse. The wildfires are a 0% containment. A firefighter has already died because of a tree falling on him. People are worried about the fire (which is burning on BOTH sides of the Hudson) reaching large residential areas nearby.
The only thing that can help us now is rain, but it has to be a slow and steady rain, because the ground is so dry and hard-packed that if we get a heavy rainfall, the ground will not be able to absorb it fast enough, and it will cause flash flooding.
There was a massive flash flood last year, considered a "once in a thousand years" event, that damaged or destroyed a huge amount of infrastructure, roads, and buildings in this area, many of which still have not been fully repaired or protected from further storm damage.
About 30% of the land at our house was literally washed away down the creek that runs though it, which had been at a trickle before, and turned into a 8 foot flood surge in the course of few hours.
The government had promised disaster relief money for our town (and surrounding towns) due to the damage from this event, but later, after much of the repair had already gotten underway, backed out and left the towns to foot the bill themselves.
My family would have been completely financially devastated if we had been forced to pay for the repairs to our property (we're talking like, over a million dollars of damage; SEVERAL times what the property is worth), but because there were key public infrastructure elements running through it (a storm drain, a sewer manhole, and an overpass for the road that went over the creek) the town ended up paying for ALL of the repairs, because they were all issues that needed to be fixed immediately and affected everyone in the town.
I am so fucking worried right now that either the wildfires are going to reach us, or rain comes in time to stave them off but it comes too heavy and causes another massive flash flood.
I need people to understand how completely bonkers it is that this is happening in this area. Like. I've lived here for around 15 years and that WHOLE time this area has only ever had like, one other official drought, and only for like, a day or two. We are RIGHT on the Hudson river, with creeks running all over, but the creeks have mostly dried up, we've been under a Red Flag burn ban for weeks, and our town is having a water shortage.
Also, besides the lack of rain, it's the second fucking week of November, but we've been having days in the high 60's, 70's, and even 80's, and there's only been a few days recently that dropped down into 50's, 40's or 30's, and only in the coolest parts of the night.
I've only had to wear an actual coat so far this season like, twice. It was in the high 70's and low to mid 80's all through the week of Halloween. When I stood in line for 2+ hours to vote, during sunset, it was balmy out. The previous presidential election, at the same location and time, had been so cold that I'd been freezing despite many layers of warm clothing, and I couldn't feel my extremities by the time I was able to cast my vote. But last week? It was BALMY.
There are still flowers blooming and putting out buds. There are tomatoes ripening on the vine. There are still flying insects outside. All these things should have been getting hit by frost like a month ago and started the process of going dormant. Now, if cold does suddenly hit, it's probably going to shock and kill off a lot of plant life.
This shit is NOT normal. Climate change is real.

I hate climate change. As a New Jerseyian, I should NOT be worried about wildfires in my state. I should only be prepared for snowstorms and flash flooding from rain. My back should ache from shoveling snow. We cannot add anything else to the mix!!!! (Also, sending good wishes to anyone, anywhere dealing with wildfires right now but a special mention for anyone being affected by the Jennings Creek fire).

Is the Northeast Entering Its Wildfire Era? (New York Times)
Excerpt from this New York Times story:
Rocky and Ren Hazelman run a chicken farm in West Milford, N.J., about 10 miles south from the Jennings Creek wildfire along the state’s border with New York.
Their 2,000 chickens require about 150 gallons of water daily, and the couple usually has no trouble collecting the needed rainwater for the job. But that is no longer possible: An extraordinarily dry fall has brought some of the worst drought conditions in the region in decades.
The weather extremes caused by global warming, which are making it harder for the Hazelmans to tend to their flock, are the same ones draining reservoirs and sparking wildfires across the Northeast, like the 5,300-acre Jennings blaze, which is now mostly contained, down the road from their farm.
The Northeast will almost certainly never experience the scale of wildfires seen in more rural Western states. But experts say that the region should prepare for more periodic droughts, which will increase the risk of fires, because of the weather-distorting effects of greenhouse gases.
Sudden and extreme shifts from wet to dry seasons, which will become increasingly common as the world heats up, experts said, feed a cycle of vegetation growth that then dries out rapidly, providing ample fuel for fires.
“We started the year with the wettest conditions in 40-plus years, which made for a lot of lush vegetation,” said Bill Kirk, the chief executive of Weathertrends360, a company that provides long-term weather forecasts. But since June, he said, the region has been the driest it has been in more than four decades. Mr. Kirk predicted that dry conditions in the Northeast would continue into 2025.
New Jersey and southern New York, including New York City, are under a drought warning, the last step before mandatory water restrictions are put into place, while Connecticut is under a drought advisory, which does not require conservation efforts among residents.
Currently, more than two-thirds of the United States is experiencing abnormally dry conditions, and about 40 percent of the country — over 149 million acres — is in a drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.
“The weather whiplash we’ve seen is more likely to happen in a warmer world,” said Matthew Rodell, a hydrologist with the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. Rising heat, fueled by burning fossil fuels, can supercharge weather events — including storms and droughts — making them more intense, he said.
As humans continue adding greenhouse gases like methane and carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, experts say, temperatures will continue to rise, which will drive extreme weather events like droughts, wildfires and floods.
“When it’s warmer, the air is thirstier,” Dr. Rodell said, so it pulls more moisture out of the soil and plants, drying them out faster. He predicts more frequent and severe droughts in the future across the globe, including in the Northeast.

Wildfires on the East and West Coasts: A Growing Crisis
Tumblr media
Main source: Wildfires on the East and West Coasts: A Growing Crisis - theprimeheadline.com
Overview of the Current Wildfire Situation
Geographic Scope: Wildfires are currently affecting multiple states across the United States, notably in New Jersey and California.
Severity: These fires have prompted evacuations, caused significant property damage, and severely impacted air quality.
Recent Developments: As of November 2024, fire crews are actively battling blazes on both coasts, with notable incidents reported in New York, New Jersey, and Southern California.
Key Areas Affected
California
Mountain Fire: Located northwest of Los Angeles in Ventura County, this fire has burned approximately 32 square miles and is currently 26% contained. The fire's rapid spread is attributed to dry conditions and Santa Ana winds.
Destruction and Damage: Over 130 structures have been destroyed, with many more damaged. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Evacuations: Thousands of residents have been forced to evacuate their homes due to the threat posed by the fire.
New Jersey and New York
Jennings Creek Fire: This fire has burned around 3,000 acres in West Milford, New Jersey, and is only 10% contained. It has threatened more than two dozen structures.
Fatalities: An 18-year-old New York State Parks employee, Dariel Vasquez, tragically lost his life while battling a forest fire in Sterling Forest, New York.
Air Quality Issues: The smoke from these fires has led to unhealthy air quality conditions across the New York City area, prompting health officials to issue air quality alerts.
Impact on Communities
Evacuations have been ordered in various regions, with local authorities working to ensure public safety.
The fires have disrupted community events, including the postponement of Veterans Day parades in affected areas.
Property damage is significant, with over 130 structures reported destroyed in California alone.
Local governments are urging residents to conserve water and avoid activities that could exacerbate fire risks, such as grilling in parks.
Environmental Conditions Contributing to Wildfires
Drought Conditions
Both coasts are experiencing historic droughts that have created ideal conditions for wildfires.
In New Jersey, three counties are classified as experiencing "extreme" drought, while others face severe or moderate drought conditions.
Climate Change Factors
Researchers indicate that climate change is exacerbating wildfire risks by increasing temperatures and decreasing humidity levels.
The Northeast is seeing a rise in fire weather days compared to previous decades, making wildfires more common.
Firefighting Efforts and Challenges
Firefighting crews from multiple states are collaborating to combat these blazes.
Over 200 local volunteers joined professional firefighters in New Jersey to assist with containment efforts.
The challenging terrain and underground burning complicate firefighting strategies, requiring extensive manpower and resources.
Fire crews are working tirelessly to contain the wildfires, with some areas receiving much-needed rain that has aided suppression efforts.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has expressed condolences for the loss of life and emphasized the bravery of those fighting the fires.
Health Risks Associated with Wildfires
Poor air quality due to smoke has led to health warnings for residents in affected areas.
Reports indicate that the AQI in New York City reached levels classified as "unhealthy for sensitive groups" and even "very unhealthy" in some areas.
Residents have been advised to limit outdoor activities and wear masks to mitigate health risks associated with smoke inhalation.
Vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory issues, are particularly at risk.
Historical Context and Trends
Increasing Frequency of Wildfires:
Drought Conditions:
Recent Developments and Future Outlook
Some rain has fallen in affected areas; however, it is insufficient to fully mitigate the wildfire threat.
Experts predict that wildfires will continue to pose a significant risk as long as drought conditions persist and climate change impacts worsen.
Also, read about the recent Hurricane Helena that caused 220+ deaths.
Conclusion
The ongoing wildfires on both the East and West Coasts highlight the urgent need for effective wildfire management strategies and community preparedness.
As conditions remain dry and winds persist, the threat of wildfires continues to loom large, necessitating vigilance and proactive measures from both authorities and residents.

Wildfires in New Jersey and New York lead to the death of a state parks employee and cause unhealthy air quality levels.
New York State Police reported that an 18-year-old New York State Parks employee lost their life while fighting a forest fire near the New York-New Jersey state line.
youtube
Wildfires continued to burn across parts of the Northeast on Sunday, resulting in at least one reported fatality near the New York-New Jersey border, as crews worked to contain the flames.
Air quality alerts will remain in effect through Sunday for the New York City area, as well as Orange and Putnam counties in New York.
Over the weekend, residents in the New York City area woke up to the smell of smoke from nearby wildfires, with pollutants lingering in the air and prompting the issuance of these alerts.
New York City Emergency Management (NYCEM) reported that the air quality index reached 201 (very unhealthy), posing a risk to residents.
“Serious health effects are possible,” NYCEM posted on X. “High-quality masks can help reduce exposure to air pollution.”
Emergency officials urged residents to move outdoor activities indoors. “Limit outdoor activity to an hour or less, especially if you have underlying health conditions,” the department advised.
Poor air quality alerts extend beyond the New York City area. According to the National Weather Service office in Albany, a shift in wind direction to the south could carry smoke northward, affecting eastern parts of upstate New York.
By Sunday afternoon, wildfire smoke had reached Albany, where residents reported a smoky smell accompanying hazy skies. According to AirNow.gov, the air quality index in Albany hit 103 on Sunday evening, marking it as unhealthy for sensitive groups.

A video from LaGuardia Airport captured a layer of brown haze hanging over the Manhattan skyline, while several residents told FOX Weather that their homes or apartments "smelled like a campfire" on Saturday morning.
According to the FOX Forecast Center, a fire burning near the New York-New Jersey state line appears to have been the primary source of smoke over the weekend. The Jennings Creek Wildfire has scorched at least 2,500 acres and threatened around 25 structures. The latest update from the New Jersey Forest Fire Service reported that the fire remains 0% contained.
Fire officials from both states indicated that no evacuations have been necessary in New Jersey or New York due to the Jennings Creek Wildfire.
Bill Donnelly, chief of the New Jersey Forest Fire Service, explained that the fire initially started in New York, and northerly winds pushed it into a remote area of New Jersey that was difficult for firefighters to access.
In New York, Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus confirmed a fatality linked to the wildfire in the area, and New York State Police announced an investigation.

“Dariel Vasquez, an 18-year-old Parks and Recreation Aide with the New York State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Department, was killed while fighting a forest fire in Sterling Forest, near Greenwood Lake, New York,” stated the New York State Police. “The New York State Police are currently investigating the incident.”
On Friday, firefighters tackled at least a dozen wildfires across the New York City tri-state area, sending occasional smoke plumes into the city's boroughs.
Since October 1, the New Jersey Forest Fire Service has responded to 537 wildfires, burning a total of 4,500 acres in the state. Similarly, fire officials in New York reported responding to 60 wildfires, which have burned a combined 2,100 acres.
One of these fires prompted the deployment of dozens of firefighters from the New York City Fire Department to Brooklyn’s Prospect Park.
"New Yorkers come together in times of crisis, and right now, amid the driest stretch in recent memory, we need everyone to do just that by conserving as much water as possible," New York City Mayor Eric Adams said in a recent statement.

There is some relief in the forecast as the weekend concludes. A cold front is expected to bring the first significant rain to the region in weeks, starting late Sunday into Monday, which will help improve air quality and wildfire conditions.
Editor's note: A previous version of this story mistakenly identified the person killed while battling a wildfire near the New York-New Jersey border as a first responder. Additional details have been added to confirm the victim was a New York State Parks employee.

The dry conditions have also made New Jersey's forests highly susceptible to fire. More than 11,000 acres have burned this year, with firefighters continuing to battle the massive Jennings Creek Wildfire in West Milford, which has burned nearly 4,400 acres across New Jersey and New York. Officials warned that violations of fire and water restrictions could result in fines or criminal charges.

Thirty million people in the Northeast face renewed fire weather threats on Tuesday as winds strengthen.
On Tuesday afternoon, Amtrak canceled all service between New York and New Haven, Connecticut, due to a fire near the tracks in the Bronx. Service is expected to remain suspended until at least Wednesday.
The wildfire threat across the Northeast is intensifying as winds pick up following a cold front that moved through the region on Monday.

The front initially brought some rain, but amounts were generally under half an inch, doing little to relieve the dry conditions in the region.
Since then, a combination of strong winds, with gusts up to 35 mph, and increasingly dry air from Canada will create conditions for rapid fire spread, according to the FOX Forecast Center.
Fire Weather Warnings are now in effect for five states—New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts—impacting more than 30 million people.
The intensified winds are the last thing firefighters need as they battle the 3,500-acre Jennings Creek Fire. Currently, the fire, which straddles the New York–New Jersey state line, is 20% contained.
As of Tuesday morning, New York State Police reported that fire lines set up Monday night are effectively containing the Jennings Creek wildfire, with minimal growth observed overnight.
On the New Jersey side, the state Forest Fire Service noted that firefighters are actively working to contain the fire, with tactics successfully holding the line. "Progress is being made on suppressing this fire—very good progress," said Chris Franek, assistant division forest fire warden for the New Jersey Forest Fire Service, on Tuesday.
Nearly 300 first responders, including volunteers and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Forest Rangers, have been working to reinforce fire lines protecting nearby communities, including Wah Ta Wah Park and Sylvan Park.
Currently, no evacuations are in place, and no structures are at immediate risk in either New Jersey or New York.

On Tuesday afternoon, Amtrak canceled all service between New York and New Haven, Connecticut, due to a fire near the tracks in the Bronx, with service expected to resume no sooner than Wednesday.
At a press conference Tuesday evening, New York Fire Department Chief of Operations Kevin Woods reported that two separate fires had broken out in the Bronx that afternoon—one in a transformer near the Amtrak tracks and another in a building. A brush fire also ignited near the building fire. The causes are under investigation, Woods said.
No injuries were reported from either fire.
"We've had more brush fires in the past 11 days than in any single month over the past two years," Woods said.
Another FDNY spokesperson mentioned that Amtrak will be assessing the damage to the tracks. Amtrak announced that during the service suspension, the Metro-North Railroad will honor tickets between Grand Central Station in New York and New Haven.
Smoke from the blaze drifted into New York City on Saturday, leading to hazy skies, poor air quality, and reports of smoky odors. Winds could once again push smoke toward the city, though the latest forecast from the FOX Forecast Center predicts less smoke in New York on Tuesday.
The wildfire threat will persist into Wednesday as very dry air moves in with northeasterly winds. Relative humidity is expected to drop even lower than on Tuesday, reaching minimum levels around 20%. On the positive side, winds are likely to be less intense in the afternoon, with gusts of 20-25 mph.
