Terror Camp is hiring!

We are looking to expand our volunteer staff for this year’s conference.

We have two job listings based on our current needs, but if we receive a lot of great applicants there is the possibility we’ll split up these responsibilities into 3 or even 4 separate positions.

Terror Camp is a fully volunteer, remote, asynchronous workplace (with occasional sync meetings as schedules permit). We communicate over Discord and organize our documentation over Notion and Google Drive.

We are looking for people who can devote up to a few hours a week, depending on the time of year. Commitment increases around the times of Submission Opening (June 1), Submission Closing/Acceptances (September 1-Oct 1) and the conference itself (early December).

Terror Camp is seeking a dedicated Designer who will:

Ideate and deliver a new evergreen brand identity for TC that can be revamped and reused each year

Including logo, logotype, color scheme, font families, and other brand assets for use on web, social media, and printed merch

Be an proactive team member with strong communication skills, able to quickly and regularly deliver new graphics for promotional use on social media and in email marketing

Help design an evergreen/permanent collection of merchandise as well as a limited-edition collection for this year’s conference

Assist our Webmaster in revising our website & email marketing templates to fully match new brand identity and meet best practices for UX

Potentially work on print layout for a Terror Camp book or zine (TBD)

This job would be a good fit if you:

Work or have worked professionally or semi-professionally as a graphic designer; or are a hobbyist designer with a standout portfolio

Have experience working with both digital and print assets

So, for the main website I just used “Lektor”, which I picked out of a hat on the basis that it was python-based and could do the one thing I cared about (HTML templating). But the CURSE/KISS/CUTE reader is coded from scratch. It is a single-page app, and it loads and displays story content by grabbing the HTML from a JSON file I call the “story file”. The JSON in turn is created by a parser that I wrote in python that parses a specially-formatted markdown file which I also confusingly call the “story file”. The script format for this latter file is slightly custom but is mostly just “normal markdown but I repurposed code ticks as a macro format”:

The music player is pretty rudimentary and just offloads all the complicated business to howler.js.

It’s a funny patchworked leaning tower of python but it gets it done and gets it done entirely client-side and that means I don’t have to dip even one of my toes into the haunted pool of server-side web development =w=

And then another kind of thing... I was talking with a friend who’s been struggling to find a job in his field (he's studying management, which is a solid and common path). So, why not help a little bit? (That is what is in the image, do not call me a click baiter*)

I strongly believe that if you're struggling to get into any area, a nice way to present yourself is by having a page—it can be pure HTML/CSS or a cloned repo with some kind of "personal website template" using all the NodeJS you want.

Then, turn it into a DNS like "yourname-myprofession.com" so you can show a clean, well-designed QR Code with your avatar during interviews. It’s a cleanest way possible to present your résumé and experience. Tech skills are like magic, especially for those who haven't seen it before.

thank you! i was self-taught and think that's the best/easiest way to learn. check out the code of a site you like, try to recreate it/mess with it on your own, make tumblr themes (for css)! i learned the essentials by making my own goofy websites on neocities. but i don't keep up with my education now, i have a good idea of the fundamentals. plus, unless you want to be a front-end developer, it's unlikely you'd need to know anything beyond basic html/css - most organizations probably use a cms like wordpress that allows you to implement templates and update things very easily without touching code. but understanding the basics can be helpful, it's definitely a plus.

Final Reflection

Alohaaaa! 🤙 Welcome back to my blog! Alas, this will be my last post on this blog, unfortunately. I have overcome many hurdles, and I am proud of where I am today, my project, and what has led me to this point. This journey was not easy, but it was definitely worthwhile and memorable, thanks to all the support I received. I want to personally thank everyone who has participated in my Instagram polls and my usability testing survey. Shout out to y’all!

1. What were your thoughts about your research topic going into the first week of the semester?

My thoughts during the first week of the semester about my research topic, job displacement in web design, were that AI will not replace human designers or artists as a whole because they lack empathy and the ability to form meaningful connections with humans, both interpersonally and in person. However, I didn't think I could win this battle against AI due to my inexperience. I have the skills, sure, but they are elementary at best. Prior to this project, I had some experience working with Figma and creating my first website prototype through my CM 316 (User Experience) course. I also practiced more coding in HTML and CSS in my ART 320 (Web Design & Development) class. In the end, I created a website prototype, so no coding experience was actually needed.

2. What are your thoughts now about your research topic and your project/practicum?

My current thoughts on my research topic are that AI can be used as a tool to brainstorm during the ideation step of the design process, generating ideas or inspiration for wireframes and similar tasks. However, it should not do the work entirely for you. It's the same with templates; you don't just submit it as is. You have to add your own personal touch and style, and replace the content with your own words. Regarding my project, I never thought I would beat the AI, so it was a pleasant surprise to win against it. I had many ups and downs, and at one point, I thought this project was impossible to complete and that I wouldn't graduate on time. Nevertheless, I'm so glad I reduced its scope, making it less overwhelming and daunting. Best decision I ever made. I somewhat regret not being able to complete my original deliverable of a website, but maybe I can create one in the future. Some things are just not meant for you at the moment, but they can come to you later.

3. What did you learn about yourself as a creative through this journey?

It was challenging for me to meet my own deadlines, so I kept giving myself extensions, as the project was self-directed and mostly independent. I always thought I was behind, and it really made me doubt my abilities and timeliness. However, I learned not to be as harsh on myself, even though we are our own worst critics. I once saw a quote that said, “Make it exist first, then you can make it good,” or something along those lines. That really resonated with the perfectionist in me because I am always so focused on the little details, like spacing and alignment, when I should really be focusing on the broader picture.

4. What did you learn about the creative and production process?

If you don’t already know, the creative process has three phases: pre-production, production, and post-production, also known as the three P’s. What I learned is that you just need to trust the process. There will be some bumps and hiccups along the way, but that is to be expected, as no one is perfect and is bound to make mistakes. You also have to remember that you are still a student, so you're still learning; it’s okay to make mistakes. From planning to execution, every phase of the process is vital, but the bulk of your project will be the production phase. During the production phase, it took me approximately one to three days to work on the lo-fi wireframes and five days to complete the hi-fi wireframes and prototype together. I learned to be patient with myself and the process. Locking in wasn’t easy, but once I was in the zone, nothing could stop me, not even hunger.

5. What advice would you give new senior capstone students?

My advice is to get started as soon as possible and really plan ahead. The pre-capstone is essentially your blueprint for your project, which is necessary for any project. You really need to thoroughly and thoughtfully consider what your project entails, including the specifics for each phase, or at least a general outline. Also, make sure to have backup plans in case your original plan doesn’t work out, like me. My backup plan was to create a website prototype, since I saw other classmates doing the same. Ergo, at least have a plan A and a plan B. The more plans you have, the better prepared you are, and you have more options to choose from. Also, be truly interested and passionate about your research topic. Additionally, I suggest delivering something you’re familiar with, so that you’re not just learning an entirely new skill from the beginning. It’s good to challenge yourself, but the final product may not turn out as you wanted.

6. Where to now?

After graduation, I was referred to work for the local Hawaiian government as a web designer. I still need to follow up with them if the offer still stands. Regardless, I plan to work in-house at a local or remote company, at a local or remote agency, or as a freelance web designer. I dream of working at top companies like Google, Microsoft, or Adobe. If all else fails, I could start up my own web design studio called "Webko," meaning "my web(site)" in Ilokano. I am trying to apply to as many jobs as possible, but I want to focus on graduating first.

Hi, I'm Yuri. I made this account during my ✨preteen cringe phase✨ and I didn't use it for much. It was forgotten for years, but a few months ago I got reminded of its existence. Still, I only used it to like post and occasionally comment. About a week and half ago I was like "I'mma make an Uberhood in The Sims 2". For those who want to know me a little better, I'm a sleep-deprived biotechnology student from Poland. I'm a lesbian in 20s, who's often described as chaotic. Also, from time to time, I might post art since I like to draw. And I enabled the ask option, if anyone is interested in that. So back to the Hyperfixationhood- Uberhood... Basically, it's a way to play every The Sims 2 neighborhood on one savefile. The setup is fairly easy, you need to pick your main hood and then add other ones as subhoods. I'm playing with Pleasantview as my main hood with added Strangetown, Veronaville, Bluewater Village, Riverblossom Hills, Desiderata Valley, Belladonna Cove, and a custom Downtown ( https://katatty.tumblr.com/post/645638968277417984/im-delighted-to-present-at-last-my-fully-madeover I think it doesn't have any Sims, but adds extra space). I also added all 3 universities (Sim State University, Academie Le Tour, La Fiesta Tech), all 3 vacation destinations (Takemizu Village, Three Lakes, Twikkii Island), and all the Sims from the Stealth Hoods. I use the clean versions for each of those. That was the easy part. Because of the discovery of baby face templates ( https://youtu.be/MFhXpq8E8eQ?si=BWxl77sX-Rg5dmFC ), I decided I wanted my Sims to have genetic infant faces. Every hood had its "babyfied" version. ...Except Belladonna Cove and Desiderata Valley. But I found a tutorial by ivycopur on how to create Sims with baby face templates ( https://ivycopur.dreamwidth.org/439.html ), so I was like "I'mma do it myself". Honestly, it wasn't that hard, just took a lot of time. General gameplay information and rules:

- I'm playing rotationally with each family, but the order of the households varies.

* The very first round (Round 0) will last 2 days, and the rest of the rounds will last 6 days.

* Sim pregnancy lasts 36 h, and pet pregnancy lasts 12-24 h.

* 1 day = 6 months

Baby - 2 days (0 - 1 year)

Child - 14 days (6 - 13 years)

Teen - 18 days (13 - 22 years)

Adult - 76 days (22 - 60 years)

Elder - 20- 40 days (70 - 80 years)

- I'm marking the starting year as 2004 since that's when the game was released. Plus it will be funny when I eventually get into the far future, but the technology won't change much.

- I'm helping myself in choosing my Sims aspirations, one true hobby, and job with the help of a calculator made by Marticore ( https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/15qEDgAZI6Lk8IGKfRmemPYftl5n-mmjOt2CyA5e8dmY/edit?gid=1882396550#gid=1882396550 ). I use it for inspiration often.

- I'm using ACR to choose my Sims' sexuality when they become teenagers, but sometimes I pick it myself if I find it fitting (for example, I headcanon Beau Broke as a gay man when he grows up).

- I'm using several supernatural mods that change the mechanics of occult Sims, found in this video https://youtu.be/FcbEoMHxpo8?si=9hNBwhv9HjEiv6Zl , but I only picked some of them. The most notable ones I added to my game are Alien superpowers, children and teen Plantsims, toddler and child Vampires, child Werewolves, toddler and child Witches, and Fairies as a new occult.

* I have supernatural skins as custom skin tones ( https://modthesims.info/download.php?t=284759 ), and I will change Sim's genetics if they become occult (for example, a Plantsim will get a Plantsim skin in their DNA).

- I'm using The Traits Project mod, which adds The Sims 3 traits to The Sims 2 ( https://hexagonal-bipyramid.tumblr.com/traitsProject ), and the farmhand trait ( https://fireflowersims.tumblr.com/post/651840507529543680/the-3t2-traits-and-the-medieval-caste-expansion ).

* I will randomize Sim's traits, but if a Sim gives me a specific vibe, I will pick a trait myself.

* Toddlers get 2 traits, children get 3 traits, teenagers get 4 traits, and adults (and elders) get 5 traits.

* Each Sim will get at least one trait after mom and at least one trait after dad.

* I also have a chronic illness trait mod ( https://modthesims.info/download.php?t=673581 ). I will give it to my Sims if the pregnancy passes terribly, if the Death by Childbirth mod takes effect, or if it fits story-wise.

- I'm playing kind of half wants-based. I'm going to use the Sims' wants to help influence the story, but they won't be the main deciding factor. I don't want every Sim to turn out the same, and I do have some stories planned.

- Knowledge Sims always go to college, Sims with other aspirations go if they have a want at the end of the teen lifestage, or if it fits the story. The Capp family always goes to college. College is frozen time for those Sims, they don't age there.

- If more than half of the household has corresponding wants to get a pet, they will get one.

where are the idols?

this sorter was made specifically with the splatbands fandom in mind, rather than the broader splatoon fandom! so i left the idols out considering well. just how popular and relevant to the wider community they are. yes, they technically are band characters, but they're front and center to just about everything else about the game. so theyve been left out here.

now, if enough people DO want them added? i will absolutely add them in a heartbeat! but for the time being they will remain out of the list.

what about turquoise october and octoplush? what about dj octavio?

sort of the same reason as the idols, though in 2/3 of those cases, it's sort of the opposite? there's not really all that much characterization to turquoise october and octoplush, as they're just anonymous collectives of musicians. and this sorter was intended to highlight the characters of the bands, not just the bands themselves. if that were the case, it would be a splatbands song or band sorter, not just the characters! so, they're also being left out. buuuut again, the same thing goes for them! if enough people want them added and ask for it, i will absolutely load them up into the character list!

why use the non-localized character names?

because i have a personal vendetta against the underpaid noa intern that localized them <3 next question JOKE JOKE THATS A JOKE FOR LEGAL REASONS THAT IS A JOKE in all seriousness though, im just used to them more and, as said in the idols section, this sorter was made for the fandom in mind! i'd assume people here will be much more familiar with those names! (even though i am quite partial to a few of the more thoughtful name choices tbh…) you will only catch me using 'mashup' with full sincerity over my cold, dead body, though.

why no undo button or exclusion options?

ok so. i am by no means an expert at coding. this entire project was just something i threw together in 24 hours running off of a free template and my bare-bones html and javascript knowledge. and to my understanding, in order to actually get javascript RUNNING in a custom tumblr theme, you need to jump through a whole lot of hoops and contact support about it and. i do not really have the mental bandwidth or patience to do that atm.

that being said, if anyone reading this does have that knowledge and WOULD like to pitch in and help improve the sorter in any sort of way, absolutely be my guest! you can send me an ask or a dm over on my main about it and i'd be glad to add onto this to make it better!

hehe thank u thank u ... i hope so too !!! im working on moving away from the template i started with, it's a lot of work figuring it all out but im having a blast, coding is a pain in the ass but once u get the hang of it its so cool seeing what uve been working on coming together all nicely :D html is generally an easier language to learn than something like javascript or python, since it's much more immediately readable. it has a lot less potential than those two, but it doesnt necessarily need to be the most complex thing in the world! u can still get a lot out of it, and most things tht i dont understand immediately i can usually infer what theyre Supposed 2 do and tht makes it a lot easier. much less math too LMAOAOAOA
