like i loooove a character trait that is both a flaw at certain angles and a virtue at others.

simon tam’s black-and-white thinking mentality means he can be judgmental, resistant to change, and at times not open to new ideas. it means he can be willfully ignorant when something doesn’t make sense to him or line up with his view of the world (or verse, whatever.)

but it also means he has a deep and strong sense of principals and justice. it’s why he chose to try to save river when their parents wouldn’t do the same. it’s why he helps to treat the sick in jianying, despite being frustrated with their kidnapping; because he knows they’re suffering unjustly. it’s why he thinks the volcano analogy is bullshit; he sees it as a disingenuous justification for hurting others for pleasure’s sake. it’s why, when trying to appeal to someone to protect them (usually river, though not always), he always points to ways in which they are vulnerable, innocent, or otherwise undeserving. like telling the witch-burning mob that river is just a troubled girl and has done nothing to them, or trying to appeal to early’s (non-existent) sense of morality and compassion by pointing out that she’s “not some bandit on a murder run, just an innocent girl”. even with book in objects in space, seeing early’s knocked him out, his reaction is “what part of your plan dictated the necessity of beating up a shepherd?” emphasizing book’s perceived innocence, vulnerability, and social standing as someone commonly considered Unambiguously Good in society (and there is some cognitive dissonance here, too: book is a kind soul and has been a good friend to the tams, but simon shouldn’t be so surprised when early alludes to the idea that’s not all he is - simon knows firsthand book is also quite handy with military tactics and weapons). even when he’s dressing down that doctor in ariel, what he says at the end - “your patient should be dead” - makes it clear, to me, that the reason he’s so angry (outside of their plan being disrupted and being stressed out) is that he takes his job as a doctor very seriously, and is frustrated by the idea that others might not be doing the same, because those patients trust them with their lives. he both is and feels the need to be Excellent at what he does, because if he’s not, people will die. and expects the same from other doctors and is pissed when they either can’t or won’t meet those standards. (and he doesn’t care which it is. if they’re capable and make a mistake, they’re being irresponsible and need to do better. (which is where the flaw comes in - doesn’t give others (or himself) room for human error.) and if they’re Not Capable, then to him, they shouldn’t be a doctor. and are still irresponsible for doing it anyway.)

and it’s not that he doesn’t genuinely care about these people he’s advocating for - he does - but there’s also a degree of intellectualizing his own moral code, based in what he perceives as both logical and appropriate social standards of behavior, and projecting it onto other people. when he makes these appeals it’s not (just, though there often is an emotional component to it) an emotional plea; it’s a logical argument. “you shouldn’t do [this], because [this.]” and while it does always have the capacity to lean into the flaw side of things, too, i also think it’s one of the more admirable things about simon. he has a very consistent and strongly held value system that is centered around not hurting the vulnerable and taking moral responsibility seriously, and he applies it to himself, too. (mostly. and when he doesn’t, it’s because of a desperate situation, and it’s still a Big Deal to him. more on that another time i have to go to class)
