One of my FAVOURITE places in Pakistan - I was made to feel so WELCOME 🇵🇰

I met some of the friendliest people in Pakistan here in the Kalash valleys. I explored Kalasha life from clothing to shops, graveyards, food, rules for women and menstruation houses - this place blew my mind.

The lands of the Kalash people are lush and verdant. I worry these people's lives are too often perceived as a kind of cultural curiosity, being so visibly different from their neighbours. For those who don't know, places like Bumbaret are very much the 'place to go' as a tourist (both foreign and local) in Chitral, and their economies have adapted to benefit from this, very reasonably so, especially as a minority group who need to advocate for themselves.

Spending time here really made me grapple with my presence as an outsider, especially one desiring to take images; I ended up taking very few, even though people like this girl would ask often. In a climate of mass consumption do images always contribute to the commodification of culture? Can you both be a positive and detrimental presence in these places? I think at the very least you should be aware of what you are participating in.

The tall green grass and trickling irrigation channels are reminders that there are skilled farmers in their ranks, working daily, with complex lives beyond the commodification of the observer.
