Hello!! I want to learn modern standard arabic. I’m moving to Dubai in a year and I want to be prepared hehe. I did learn a lot from your blog, I was wondering how I could learn it faster. Could you help me?

It’s wonderful that you’re feeling so motivated to learn the language! I’ll try my best to help you.

First, I would like to redirect you to this Arabic apps master-list [link] by @wonderful-language-sounds. It has so many interesting apps that could help you.

I’m happy to hear that you found my blog helpful. Here are some tips that I recommend to help you learn Arabic faster :

1- Try to watch as many movies and tv shows in Arabic as possible. Using a textbook to learn is very useful, but I believe that hearing the words and expressions applies in different situations by speakers will help you understand them and memorize them easier.  The tv show can be anything you, whether they are Arabic dramas or the Arabic dubbed version of your favorite drama (many foreign dramas especially East Asian dramas get dubbed into Modern Standard Arabic) or animated series or animated movie.

2- When you’re watching something in Arabic, try to have a small note book to write down the new words or expressions that you found interesting. This will help you build up your vocabulary.

3- Listen to music. There are artists like Rim Banna, Kathem Alsaher, Hmood Alkhadr, Marcel Khaleefa, and Abdul Rahman Mohammed who sing in Modern Standard Arabic so give their songs a try. Music is a way to learn Arabic words “on the go” while you’re doing something else and don’t feel like taking a pen an a paper and going in study mood.

4- When you’re organizing the vocabulary, try to organize the words in certain categories rather than alphabetical order. It helps you link them together and organize them in your mind.

5- Don’t forget studying the grammar to understand the structure of sentences and the language, starting with the alphabets! Take your time to learn the alphabets, even if it takes you longer than you expect. Remember that it’s a good investment of your time to learn the alphabets so that you will lessen your dependence on transliteration and make it easier for you to learn new vocabulary.

6- As for reading, since you will need diatrics I have made a list for beginners [link] and here’s a link for audio books so that it will help you read the books that don’t have diatrics in them. [link]

7- It’s important to set goals and be motivated but be sure not to pressure yourself. Study at a pace you’re comfortable with so that the journey will be more enjoyable. I made a post about self studying [link] and other studying tips [link].

II. Songs dubbed into Arabic 

Kalamesque is a Channel on YouTube that dubs songs into Arabic and they use Modern Standard Arabic check out their songs : Crazy in love/ Ahwaak, Ya Leil, Careless whisper/ Burkaan thanbin, At last/ Hayhat , Break my heart/ Oudi ilay.

Emi Hetari dubs anime songs into Arabic on YouTube and she does a great job, some of the songs she dubbed are : erased (ending song), tokyo ghoul (unravel), fairy tail (masayume chasing), black butler (ending)

Dark Wingz also dub anime songs into Arabic,they’re really good and worth listening to :  : your lie in April,  Hunterxhunter 2011, Pandora Hearts, Bleach, Kimi ni todoke , Naruto Shippuden.

Recently, disney started dubbing in Modern Standard Arabic and redoing the old songs but the songs that I was able to find are the old ones dubbed into the Egyptian dialect, I was only able to find let it go from Frozen [link] and call me beep me (kim possible) [link].

Anime in Arabic are dubbed in Modern Standard Arabic, so naturally, the opening songs will also be in MSA as well and here are some of my favorite openings (links are added to every song): treasure island (takarajima),   grendaizer, Far longer than forever (swan princess), the unoffical one piece opening song, hunterxhunter 1999, Thunder jet (Hazeem Al Raa’d), Dragon ball Z, Tiger mask, pokemon, the jungle book, Ie naki ko (Remi) , Romeo’s blue skies (aka the purest and sweetest song ever),  the sound of music, Robin Hood,  Detective Conan, Batman , The Mask,��Slam Dunk, Captain Tsubasa (part 5) , Captain Tsubasa part 3, Monster Rancher,  the secret of the cerulean sand, the secret garden, Journey to the Past (Anastasia) ,Once upon a december (Anastasia) , Digimon (1-4openings) , Digimon 3 ending, Digimon 4 ending,  Shin Hakkenden, Lets and go . (the names are avaialble but they’re mostly in Arabic, so if there’s a specific anime that you want me to find the arabic opening song for you let me know).

Thank you for your explanation but that's not what I meant, they definitely did say ألف E.g. حبيبتي يا ألف يا حبيبتي Hope I'm not bothering you too much with this but I really want to know

Hello again, anon! You’re not bothering me at all.

I see.You’re referring to the poem حبيبتي  by Nizar Qabbani which was sang by Kathem Alsaher. To be honest, I really wasn’t able to find any other synonyms for the word ألف except for “one thousand”.

I’m not sure of the answer, it’s just a speculation from my part, but it could be possible that the number one thousand is used as an exaggeration to express the amount of love that the poet (or singer) has for their lover. 

Again, I’m not sure, but this is what I think. If anyone else has any comments or suggestions feel free to share with me and anon.
