I recall you mentioning which Pokemons corresponded to Dsaf characters, and since I've recently been playing pokemon X, I'm now wondering the same with dialtown characters like Mingus, Roger or EVERYONE ELSE
I wrote an idea for a DT gym leaders + elite four roster for DT ages ago. Sure, I'll bite.
DT GYM LEADERS (in the order of when you face them with some pokemon from their own personal fully evolved teams):
Jerry (Normal): "Strategy? You ask me about fucking STRATEGY?! I have VERMIN Pokémon, you understand?! I should be glad the kids who challenge my gym aren't after my JOB. This is DEGRADING. They GAVE me these dirty birds and rats, ya understand? I didn't ASK for this damned type! So many SICK DOG POKÉMON." (Favourite move: Rest. Has a 2 teams of Stoutlands. I'm sure he has others too.)
Randy (Flying): "Well, my Pokémon are kinda like me. Fr-Fragile. So, my go-to strategy is to hit hard and as FAST as possible before my opponent can shatter my delicate bird team to smithereens! Mathematically, it's gotta be better to hit FIRST!
...Y-Y'know?" (Favourite move: Brave Bird, probably has a Pidgeot, Swanna, Cramorant, Crobat)
Oliver (Steel): "Yo! My pokémon are BUILT for ROBOT FIGHTS and they're made of METAL, so they're sturdy as SHIT. I usually just go nuts and go on an all-out offensive using the gnarly and expertly assembled movesets of yours truly! I'll get to throw everything I have at you while you can barely chip away at my pokémon's metallic armor! Watch OUT." (Favourite move: Heavy Slam, has a Steelix, Skarmory, Magnezone, Aggron)
Karen (Ground): "My pokémon are tanky and have diverse movesets. I utilize field moves. The rest of the world simply does NOT have what it takes to harness the true power of dirt-horse." (Favourite move: Fissure, has a Mudsdale, Dugtrio, Krookodile)
Bigfoot (Grass): [serene ape noises] (Favourite move, Cotton Guard. Has a Simisage, Rillaboom, Shiftry, Abomasnow)
Gingi (Poison): "these ones are the only pokémon out of the awful birds and rats and such that i dragged home that decided to stick around. they seem to enjoy me tent" (Favourite move: Gunk Shot. Has a Muk, Koffing, Garbodor)
God (Psychic): "Personally, I like creepy pokeymen. You know the kind I mean. Mr Mime, Hypno, those freaks. They're my PEOPLE. Why do I keep these strange beings around me? It's to psych you out, you see. All types have weaknesses, making the question of which type is best almost meaningless. So, why not pick Pokémon that deal psychic damage to your opponents? Aha! See? It's psychic-damage. Get it? Like the gym name. Frankly, I just have these guys on-hand because it means that I have a LOT less people showin' up at my gym. I really just see this job as an obligation. Hell, I'd rather be in bed right now. Cancellation is better than Obliteration, that's my motto! Anyway, got any Prize Money?" (Favourite Move: Dream Eater)
Mingus (Dark): "You FOOL. Do I have to SPELL IT OUT for you?! The key to success is simple: Pick a supreme type. Assemble a team of heavy-hitters. It's better if they blend into shadows easily. (I am a sinister person, to be clear!!!) Each of my Pokémon have diverse, punishing movesets which were carefully constructed to inflict status conditions and erode an opponent's stats in battle. Horrible Pokémon that will PUNISH you for daring to face me. If you wake me up in order to fight you at the stupid gym the Pokémon League Confederation FORCED ME to set up here at Town Hall, I WILL fucking END YOU." (Signature Move: She's being dead serious right now. I say cut your losses and see give the Orange league a try instead. She has a Liepard though. Of course.)
ELITE FOUR:
Stabby + Shooty (Bug): "Yeah, look, okay. Steel and dark slots were already taken when we applied to be a part of the league. We were GONNA ask for Ghost, or maybe Poison, but Mingus said we'd be a waste of an Elite Four slot and people would throw things at us if we had the expectations that a cooler type would carry. We didn't wanna get hassled, I mean, we're only here so Mingus can keep an eye on what's happening at the League..."
"So, we let her choose the bug type for us. Was she right to set us down this mediocre insect path? We'll be fucked if we know." "Hey, even if this insect stuff was all for nothin', it still wasn't a total waste. I had a rockin' good time out in the forest, collectin' bugs with my bro, and no cat can take that away from me!" "Bro…" (Favourite move: Megahorn. They have a Pinsir, Ariados, Scizor)
Billy (Fire): "I wanted dark, but the cat got to it first. So, I said to myself: "Okay, Puss Puss. You take the dark type and you see what happens. I'm going to make you WISH you'd let me have a large crow instead of a host of animals who were bred specifically for arson." (Signature move: Fire Blast, he has a Houndoom, Charizard, Darmanitan)
Norm (Rock): "All o' my critters are equipped to deal with anythin' that's thrown at us. We've got diverse movepools, emphasis on attack AND speed. Quick on the draw, ready fer anythin'. Solid like a rock." (Favourite move: Stone Edge (which always hits), has a Rhyperior, Aerodactyl, Archeops, Crustle, Tyranitar) CHAMPION:
Callum (Pre-erasure) (Dragon): "You're wondering which type to expect from the Pokémon League Champion? Why, I won't put my name to ANYTHING that isn't to the quality this here country DESERVES, no-siree! My administration's gonna give you nothin' but the BEST, folks! Why, that's right! There's REALLY no topping the Dragon type! Pokémon associated with stories of leadership and Revolution! All of my Pokemon specialize in hard-hitting and devastating attacks like Hyper Beam and Solar Beam, designed to obliterate would-be threats and act as a complete deterrent to any would-be challengers! Trust me: If I getcha, you're gonna FEEL it!" (Has a Haxorus, Hydreigon, Tyrantrum, Frapple)
Crown (Post-Erasure) (Ghost): "I-Is the war over yet? I can't get a signal-" (Favourite move: Destiny Bond) (Gengar, Chandelure, Cofagrius, Dusknoir)

Tumblr media
By their own admission, 2024 was a rough year for the Black Keys. After releasing their 12th studio album, Ohio Players, the band was looking forward to a North American arena tour following successful shows in Europe. Instead, they canceled the entire tour, reportedly due to low ticket sales, and subsequently fired their management — which included industry heavyweight Irving Azoff — and PR team. Two weeks later, in a since-deleted tweet aimed at Azoff, drummer Patrick Carney wrote, “We got fucked. I’ll let you all know how so it doesn’t happen to you.” (In another deleted tweet, Carney sarcastically wrote of Azoff, “So great to know you are always looking out for the artist.”)
Short of a few shows — more on the group’s “America Loves Crypto” gig in their hometown of Akron, Ohio later — the band went relatively quiet, establishing a semi-frequent Nashville residency for their all-vinyl “Record Hang” dance parties but not speaking publicly on the fracas that both fans and the music industry watched closely.
Last July, the duo did what they usually do when faced with adversity: They hit the studio, spending the better part of last summer and fall writing and recording more than 15 songs for their upcoming album, No Rain, No Flowers. (The group is still deciding how many tracks will make the final cut and will release the album later this year.) On first single “The Night Before” (written with Daniel Tashian, who co-wrote and co-produced Kacey Musgraves’ Golden Hour), the group leans into its upbeat pop-rock side. “It was very organically [done] in the studio together,” singer-guitarist Dan Auerbach tells Rolling Stone. “The three of us just came up with it together on the spot.”
Earlier this week, the duo announced their long-awaited rescheduled tour dates, swapping arenas for smaller amphitheaters and theaters. “The whole music industry obviously has changed over the last 15 years,” Carney says. “We’re still trying to figure out how it works and feels authentic.”
In their first interview since the tour cancellation and management split, Carney and Auerbach spoke to Rolling Stone from the group’s Easy Eye Sound studio in Nashville for both a post-mortem of the past year and optimistic look ahead.
Can you talk a little about the significance of the album title No Rain, No Flowers? Dan Auerbach: Well, we wrote the [title] song with [Grammy-winning songwriter] Rick Nowels, and it was just an expression that I’d heard, and we turned it into this tune that seemed to sum up how we envisioned ourselves getting over the situation that we’d just been through.
Patrick Carney: Rick likes to start with a title, and that was the title Dan had written down in his phone. You got to take it on the chin sometimes to move forward, and that’s kind of what the last year was for us.
How would you sum up the past year for you guys? Carney: Pretty enlightening and eye-opening. Dan and I have a pretty good grasp on the music industry, but to be exposed firsthand to how things have changed, it was pretty shocking to understand what’s actually going on. I think trying to avoid getting jaded and totally flustered, we took the opportunity to reassess how we’re doing things and to make a record that’s mostly on this positive tinge.
What specifically was shocking to you? Carney: To generalize: to see how consolidated the industry has gotten and how connected things have become. It’s mind-blowing. And there’s just a lot of shared interests across the business side of this. When you’re an artist trying to interface with that and trying to receive helpful and constructive strategy and business input, you realize that that whole world is more deeply connected than I had ever really thought.
Dan, how would you categorize the past year? Auerbach: A lot of ups and downs, a lot of sleepless nights, a lot of 2 a.m. phone calls, a lot of worry and stress, a lot of heartache, but also an incredible amount of creativity. I feel really excited about the music we’ve been making. It feels like the creative juices are flowing in a really positive way, and I’m kind of loving it.
Let’s get into some details. Two weeks after the tour was canceled, a rep for Azoff Management said the split was “an amicable parting.” Is that how you would characterize it? Carney: [Pauses.] I mean, we fired their ass. Shit happens. We spent a lot of time making Ohio Players and turned it in in October 2023 and had all this time to plan how we were going to tour. Things got off to this weird start where I was waiting for these European dates to pop up because our plan was to go to Europe first. We ended up getting nine shows sent to us [on] a three-week tour. There’s absolutely no way to make money [from] that.
We kept having to move shit around for a Manchester show because there was a venue that our management company co-owned and wanted us to play, and it wasn’t ready. After going to Europe 30 times in our career for tours, this was the most poorly orchestrated tour we had been on. The shows were incredible, but [it] just became the first sign that maybe there was some poor organization happening.
When did the relationship with Irving Azoff sour? Carney: The ultimate answer to this is that it’s a broader thing. I don’t even want to mention that guy’s name. I want to look at this from a bigger perspective. The essential thing that we learned here was how many management companies are directly connected to a company that runs every single aspect of promotion in this country. This whole industry is so intertwined from ticketing to promotion to the management company. But essentially as artists — and this is the thing that we care the most about — it’s almost impossible to talk about this…. You’re dealing with management companies that co-own festivals with this other company. You’re at the [whims] of these people who have other interests.
So when you’re called into a manager’s office and he suggests something to you, I was naive enough to think that that was on the up-and-up. And more and more, it’s just not. So it’s a hard thing because I don’t think Dan and I want to sit here and look like whining bitches. But we got a little bamboozled here.
Patrick, last year you tweeted: “We got fucked. I’ll let you all know how so it doesn’t happen to you. Stay tuned.” How do you feel you got “bamboozled”? Carney: Well, I had to delete it, so I didn’t get sued.
Who threatened to sue you? Carney: No one threatened, but it was a big no-no to even talk about what’s going on here. There’s a concentration of connectivity that eliminates competition. [For] a capitalist society to function, there has to be competition. And if everything’s connected and all the interests are shared on one side, there’s no way to compete. Our tour, we had about 10 [arena] shows that were not doing great. They were just in rooms that they shouldn’t have been in.
So in any situation like this tour, we might’ve had to take one on the chin and find new venues to play in certain cities, but instead we were advised to cancel the whole tour. We were told … there were other venues being booked, and it was all going to get into more intimate rooms, and it would be great. But that wasn’t accurate. That didn’t exist.
It’s all very fucked up, and the bottom line is that we can’t even really talk about it because we won’t be able to work.
Dan, did you know Patrick was going to tweet that? Auerbach: No, I woke up to that one.
How did you feel when you saw it? Auerbach: I understood the intensity of it.
Anything else? Auerbach: No.
Did you two ever personally consider scaling down the tour rather than cancel, or are you claiming that wasn’t even an option? Carney: No, it was told to me by someone that we ended up parting ways with that the dates were being rebooked into rooms that were scaled down. So we could cancel this tour and we would re-announce dates in a couple days in these better rooms. But the plan wasn’t there because there were no holds on rooms. It was bullshit. I don’t want to use the term “lie” because I don’t want to get fucking sued, but what was presented didn’t exist.
There’s certain cities where we know we can [sell] … but you want to look to your management to make these decisions. We spend so much time making the music [and] figuring out promotional shit. This is what you lean into for management, and you hope that there’s decisions that are made on the up-and-up so that they help everybody. That’s just harder and harder to come by.
Now I’m curious about your thoughts on the Department of Justice’s lawsuit against Live Nation, claiming the company is a monopoly. (Live Nation vehemently denied the claim when the lawsuit was filed.) Carney: When [the Live Nation-Ticketmaster merger closed in 2010], Obama said, “This is so close to a monopoly. You need to watch this.” And the reason why it was allowed to go through — because it was a monopoly — the argument was artists aren’t signed into long contracts. The artists can always just opt to go to someone else … But at this point, if you don’t work with a certain company, where are you going to work?
The thing that most people don’t understand is that when you control ticketing, promotion, and all this stuff, and then you get into owning the venues and then having shared interests with management, it just becomes harder and harder [for artists] to do business. This isn’t something that’s unique to the music business. All across this country, things are getting so intertwined [and] so consolidated that it’s harder to compete in general.
It was widely reported that ticket sales for the tour were weak, with The New York Times saying last year, “Some tours like the Black Keys may simply be a matter of the band overestimating demand.” Is that a fair statement? Carney: I don’t know, but all I know is this: After the tour was canned, I went through my email, and I had one email from Ticketmaster about the tour on the day it was announced and nothing else in my inbox for six weeks. When I finally went through the numbers after the tour was canceled, we had sold nearly $10 million worth of tickets, and we had four months till the first show. We just had to take one on the fucking face.
After the tour was announced, more than a few fans complained about high ticket prices, and it’s the artist that typically sets those prices. Nosebleed seats were reportedly going for $100 at some venues. Carney: We weren’t even asked about the ticket prices on the last tour. We didn’t set them. On this [next] tour, we realized that we have to be more involved in this. The last thing Dan and I want to do is gouge a fan on a ticket.
But in retrospect, would you have tried to lower the ticket price? Carney: Yeah. This is this ongoing thing where it’s like when we did the El Camino arena tour [in 2012-13], the average upper bowl ticket was $40 or something. And then after scalping and stuff, those tickets were $65, so scalpers were making more money off those tickets than we were. Which I think is disheartening because the fans are paying it and it’s not getting to the band.… The cost of going on tour now versus 2012 is 3.5 [times higher]. Our ticket prices haven’t gone up that much.
You fired your management and PR team after the tour was canceled, but not the agency that actually booked the tour. Why is that? Carney: [Pauses.] Because I think a lot of these deals are done between management and another bigger company.
You did play a few live shows last year, including a show called “America Loves Crypto,” whose goal was to “rally the 5 million crypto owners that might just decide the 2024 election.” How did that gig come together? Carney: It was very simple: We had lost all of our income for the year. We had retainers for people that we were working with. We got offered a lot of money to play a show, and we saw that the Black Pumas had done the same event and we were like, “Book it.” It’s that simple, bro.
I was going to ask if you guys consider yourselves crypto enthusiasts. Carney: We’re Crisco enthusiasts.
You did get a fair share of criticism, though. The top comment on your own fan Reddit is, “LMAO. It’s a PAC that has endorsed all the worst candidates from both parties. What the hell are they even doing?” Did you talk about the optics of doing this gig? Carney: Of course we saw all the shit coming in, but it was like, “What are you going to do?” We were told it was a bipartisan thing. It was what it is. It was very small. It was in our hometown, so we got to go home and see our folks. I’ve definitely seen my name in bad light in the press before, so it wasn’t anything fucking new … If us playing a concert for 300 people is going to sway the whole state’s vote, then we have bigger fucking problems, bro.
Given the past year, does your mindset change going into the next tour? Carney: The most important thing for us right now is to just put on good shows that the fans enjoy. We’ve been looking to bands whose records maybe don’t chart well, but they connect with their fans in a deep way. We’ve been on this creative streak where we’ve released four albums in five years. We might just be saturating the fucking market, but it’s like while it’s happening, you just have to do it.
We’re both in our mid-forties. We’ve been doing this for 20 years. We have a greater appreciation now for what we have together than ever before. And over the last year, we’ve seen people we care about get sick. Life isn’t a guaranteed thing. So if you have this thing that’s working, why not just fucking move on it?
It’s important for people to know we got a little bit complacent with the business shit because we’ve been so busy with the creative shit, and so we just got reminded that we have to pay attention to both things.
When you look back on the five-year period between 2014’s Turn Blue and 2019’s Let’s Rock, when you guys weren’t really speaking, do you think it cost you any momentum or potential success? Carney: I looked at it like this, dude. Back then, we were literally printing money, and we were miserable. Now we’re just making tons of songs, and we’re in a much better place. The gigs were coming in, and we weren’t able to make music as often as we wanted, and that’s where the break came from … We just wanted to make some music, and so that’s where we’ve been trying to navigate that road since. We’ve picked out rooms that seem like the fans will enjoy the most, that we’ll enjoy the most, and we’ll just see what the fuck happens. Hopefully, people show up.
Patrick was always the more business-minded end of the group. Dan, did the events of the past year make you want to become more involved in the business side? Auerbach: We just have to focus on what we do best, and each of us have talents in certain areas. We just put trust in each other, and that’s the most important thing right now, and that’s what we’ve been doing. It’s funny because it’s probably a direct result of all this trauma that we just went through the last year, but we’ve been hanging out together more than ever. We’ve been getting obsessed with music and collecting records, and hanging out more is making the music better and the business better.
What exactly do you mean by “trauma”? Auerbach: Going through all the work to put this whole thing together to be able to present it to our fans, and then going out and supporting it on the road and playing shows for our fans, and then to have all of that taken away and mess up the connection that we had to our fans for so many years right when we felt like we were really in a great place. Like we said with those shows in Europe, even though the business side of the tour was so bad, the actual shows were amazing, and we expected the same when we went back to the States.
We’d been opening up our sets, doing covers, and we had plans for doing more of that too. And to just have all that completely pulled out from under us, it was not something we’d ever experienced before in 20-plus years of doing it. So yeah, it was traumatic. But I guess we’re feeling more thankful than ever that we’re able to go out on the road and play shows and be able to see our fans again.
It sounds like mentally, you guys are in a better place than you were six or nine months ago. Carney: Yeah. We’re competitive, and we like to work. And when it seems like the rules have been changed to the point where the game isn’t winnable, that’s when we start getting fucking flustered. We’ve been looking to people who play a different game. They don’t get caught up in that bullshit. Their version of winning is more about how they connect with their fans. That’s the inspiration.

The framing of public-sector workers and unions as parasites rests on a longstanding discursive distinction between society’s “makers and takers,” to borrow a phrase made popular by Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign. Its success depends on the premise that populist politics—and the producerist ideology at its heart—flows from identifiable grievances by those who produce society’s wealth against those who consume it without giving back. This “producer ethic,” as Alexander Saxton calls it, has roots in the Jeffersonian belief that the yeoman farmer, as neither a master nor a slave, was the proper subject of civic virtue, republican liberty, and self-rule. But it first emerged as a broad partisan identity in the antebellum era, where it expressed in the Democratic Party an opposition between white labor and those who would exploit it. Producerist ideology posited not an opposition between workers and owners but a masculine, cross-class assemblage connecting factions of the elite with poor whites both in cities and on the frontier in what Senator Thomas Hart Benton, a Democrat from Missouri, called “the productive and burthen-bearing classes” in opposition to those cast as unproductive and threatening, including bankers and speculators, slaves, and indigenous people. As such, producerism provided a template for subsequent political intersections of whiteness, masculinity, and labor that would include different groups and target different foes, but always secured by a logic that described a fundamental division in society between those who create society through their efforts and those who are parasitic on, or destructive of, those efforts.
[...] The deep logic of producerism thus structures representations of its negation, the parasite, which since the 1960s in particular has been constructed in highly racialized and gendered terms—the mother on welfare, an immigrant draining public coffers, the criminal “coddled” by liberal judges, or the undeserving recipient of affirmative action. These scripts animate the attack on public-sector unions and workers, continually contrasting its version of the producer—in this case the taxpayer and private-sector worker—with public unions and workers. As we demonstrate, these workers are depicted as unproductive, wasteful, excessive, and indolent, indulging the envied pleasures of shorter working hours, long vacations, and early retirement. They are cognizable precisely because they invoke a longer genealogy of the discourse of racial parasitism and producerism, and its representation of fiscal burdens. Framed this way, unionized public-sector workers become threats to taxpayers—not merely economically, but socially and psychologically as well.
Key to the successful development of populist antistatism has been its selective racial deployment, avoiding discussion of forms of state authority and distribution that have been enjoyed by most of the white electorate since the New Deal, such as Social Security, Medicare, and government-secured home loans. Attacks on the state from the right were aimed originally at school desegregation after the Brown v. Board of Education decisions, and later at busing, fair housing, antidiscrimination law, and affirmative action, and at response programs seen to favor poor people of color, such as AFDC and Medicaid. Conservatives extended this strategy by targeting other figures of racial vulnerability, such as immigrant children in public schools.
At each stage of the development of antistatism, a racialized line separating the deserving from the undeserving was drawn to bolster its claims. Now, the logic of antistatism has become so pervasive, and its success against everything from busing to affirmative action to welfare so thorough, that advocates have begun to turn its logic against new targets. Political elements made vulnerable in class terms can now be attacked via racial logic. The line between the deserving and undeserving has been moved such that a large number of white workers now fall on the latter side of the line as “takers.”
This transformation is rooted in a generation of neoliberal economic restructuring, as cuts in income transfer payments and reductions in property, income, and capital gains taxes shifted more of the responsibility for funding public services from corporations and the wealthy onto middle- and low-income workers. Households faced with flattening wages and rising levels of debt increasingly came to demand tax relief of their own as a way to safeguard their income, giving rise to a populist tax revolt. In this context, the public sector itself became stigmatized as a drain on the budgets of ordinary workers rather than as a keystone of social equity and income security and mobility.

The story of the academic rivalry between you and Bada could be traced back to the halls of Daewon High School, a prestigious institution in the bustling heart of Seoul. Both of you were prodigies in your own right, emerging as academic stars in a sea of bright minds. The competitive spirit that simmered beneath the surface of your scholarly pursuits had its roots in the early days of your high school journey.
As freshmen, you and Bada were already making waves with your exceptional performances. The teachers couldn't help but marvel at the intellectual prowess displayed by two students who seemed destined for greatness.
Your backstory was one of humble beginnings. Born into a middle-class family, you had always viewed education as the key to transcending societal limitations. The determination to succeed and prove your worth had been instilled in you by your parents, who worked tirelessly to provide you with the opportunities they never had.
Bada, on the other hand, hailed from a family with a long lineage of scholars and intellectuals. The pressure to uphold the family legacy weighed heavily on her shoulders. Her parents, both accomplished academics, had set a high bar for success, and Bada was determined to not only meet but exceed those expectations.
The first encounter that set the stage for your academic rivalry occurred in the freshman year English class. The teacher, recognizing the exceptional talent in both of you, assigned a collaborative project that would serve as a precursor to the competition that would unfold over the years.
As fate would have it, you and Bada were paired together for the project. Initially, it seemed like a harmonious partnership, with the shared goal of producing a stellar presentation. However, as the days progressed, the differences in your approaches became apparent.
You, driven by a passion for the subject and a desire to delve deep into the material, took a creative and holistic approach to the project. Bada, with her meticulous and analytical mindset, preferred a structured and methodical strategy. The clash of these contrasting methodologies resulted in a project that was neither a seamless fusion of ideas nor a harmonious collaboration.
When the teacher evaluated the project, the feedback was mixed. The creativity and depth of your insights were praised, but the lack of structure and organization drew criticism. Bada, on the other hand, received commendation for the precision and clarity of her contributions but was urged to consider incorporating a more creative element.
The experience left both of you with a sense of dissatisfaction. For you, it was the first taste of a less-than-perfect performance, while for Bada, it was an unaccustomed brush with constructive criticism. The dynamic had shifted, and an unspoken challenge lingered in the air.
The following years witnessed an escalation of the rivalry. Each exam, project, or presentation became a battleground where you and Bada sought not just to excel but to outshine each other. The competition fueled an unrelenting pursuit of excellence that saw both of you consistently topping the class.
In the crucible of academic fervor, the rivalry extended beyond the classroom. Extracurricular activities, leadership positions, and even accolades from teachers became markers of success to be fiercely contested. The once-harmonious atmosphere of Daewon High School now crackled with the electric energy of a rivalry that had transcended the ordinary.
The competitive spirit, while driving you and Bada to extraordinary heights, also exacted a toll on your personal lives. Friendships were strained as the pursuit of academic superiority overshadowed other aspects of high school life. The unspoken tension in the hallways, the pointed glances exchanged during class discussions, and the occasional clashes in student council meetings became defining features of your high school experience.
The teachers, observing the intensity of the rivalry, attempted to channel it into positive avenues. You and Bada were often chosen to represent the school in academic competitions, debates, and quiz bowls. While these opportunities provided a platform to showcase your talents on a broader stage, they also heightened the stakes of the rivalry.
Despite the competitive undercurrent, there were moments of shared recognition. The mutual acknowledgment of each other's brilliance, even if begrudgingly given, fostered a strange camaraderie. You both knew that the rivalry, while fierce, was also a source of mutual growth and intellectual stimulation.
"You did well in the debate today," you acknowledged, unable to completely conceal the admiration in your voice.
Bada responded with a slight nod. "Your points were impressive too. It's always a challenge keeping up with your unpredictability."
The recognition, however, did little to assuage the burning desire for supremacy. The rivalry continued to drive both of you to push the boundaries of academic achievement.
The banter and debates during those high school years had a different flavor. In the classrooms of Daewon High School, where the echoes of spirited discussions reverberated, the story of you and Bada unfolded amidst playful taunts and competitive banter.
"Looks like you narrowly escaped defeat in today's quiz," Bada teased, a mischievous glint in her eyes.
You shot back, "Narrowly? I call it strategic brilliance. Keeps you on your toes, doesn't it?"
The teachers, familiar with the dynamics between you two, often found themselves caught in the crossfire of banter.
"Ah, the intellectual sparring continues. I'm beginning to think I should assign you both to opposing debate teams," Mr. Kang, your history teacher, remarked with a chuckle.
Bada replied, "We'd welcome the challenge, wouldn't we? It might make things more interesting."
The banter extended beyond the academic realm. During student council meetings, where both of you held prominent positions, the discussions often took on a competitive edge.
"I propose we implement a mentorship program," you suggested, eyeing Bada with a challenge in your gaze.
Bada responded, "While mentorship is valuable, let's not forget the importance of independent learning. We don't want to coddle our fellow students."
The debates, while spirited, were always underlined by a mutual respect. The rivalry, though palpable, was a driving force that propelled both of you to strive for excellence.
Amidst the playful banter, there were moments of genuine collaboration. The fusion of your creative approach and Bada's analytical mindset occasionally resulted in projects that showcased the power of your combined intellects.
One such project, where you both collaborated on a research paper exploring the intersection of literature and science, garnered praise from your professors. The recognition, albeit shared, did little to quell the ongoing rivalry.
— — — — —
The hallways of Seoul National University echoed with the hurried footsteps of students rushing to their next classes. Among them were you and Bada, academic rivals whose competitive spirits fueled a perpetual race for excellence.
In the realm of academics, you and Bada were often neck-and-neck. Your prowess in the sciences matched her linguistic finesse, and each test became a battleground where victory was never guaranteed. The atmosphere between you two was always charged with unspoken competition, and your grades were the scoreboard that determined the winner.
Today was no different. The air buzzed with anticipation as the university prepared to release the results of the latest round of exams. The stakes were high, and both of you knew that this could be the moment that tilted the scales in one direction.
The backstory of this rivalry traced back to your first year at the university. Both you and Bada were standout students in your respective high schools, used to being at the top of your class. When you found yourselves in the same university, it was inevitable that your paths would cross.
The competition began innocently enough, with friendly banter and subtle attempts to outshine each other. However, as the semesters progressed, the rivalry intensified. Your accomplishments became the measuring stick for Bada, and vice versa. The stakes were not just about grades; they were about asserting dominance and proving who was truly the best.
As you entered the lecture hall where the test results were to be announced, a knot of nerves twisted in your stomach. The room was abuzz with whispers, and the tension was palpable. Bada, with her customary stoic expression, sat a few seats away from you. The unspoken challenge hung in the air like an electric current.
The professor walked in, holding a stack of graded papers. The room fell into a hushed silence as he prepared to distribute the tests. The moment of truth had arrived.
One by one, the professor called out names and handed back the exams. The tension in the room escalated with each passing moment. As your name was called, you reached out to grab your test, trying to hide the tremble in your hands. You quickly scanned the pages, relief washing over you as you saw the coveted "100%" at the top.
A triumphant smile crept across your face as you turned to glance at Bada. "What did you get?" you asked curiously, a mix of excitement and anticipation in your voice.
Bada's expression remained impassive as she received her test. She glanced at the pages and replied, "99%," her tone cold and unaffected.
A surge of exhilaration coursed through your veins. For the first time, it seemed victory was firmly in your grasp. "Well, looks like I finally got the upper hand this time," you said, unable to conceal the wide grin that spread across your face.
Bada met your gaze with a steady look, her poker face betraying no emotion. "Congratulations," she replied simply, her voice devoid of any hint of rivalry.
You couldn't resist the urge to boast. "I guess I've broken the cycle. Maybe this is the beginning of a winning streak," you declared, reveling in the momentary triumph.
As the news of your perfect score spread through the lecture hall, whispers of congratulations and admiration filled the air. Friends patted you on the back, and the sense of accomplishment lifted your spirits.
However little did you know the true nature of Bada's response. While she maintained her cool facade, there was a subtle glint of satisfaction in her eyes. What you didn't realize was that she had intentionally missed one question, not out of negligence, but as a calculated move. Bada had liked you for a long time, and this small act was her way of creating a moment of joy for you.
As you continued to bask in the glory of your achievement, Bada sat there, seemingly indifferent to the numbers on her paper. In reality, her heart carried a secret that she had guarded for far too long. The satisfaction in her eyes was not just about letting you win this round; it was about creating a moment that would make you smile, blissfully unaware of her feelings.
The rivalry between you and Bada had always been more than academics. Beneath the competitive banter and shared challenges, a connection had quietly blossomed. Bada had admired you for your dedication, your passion, and the genuine kindness that you extended to everyone around you. It wasn't just about being the best academically; it was about being the kind of person that made her heart skip a beat.
The backstory to this unexpected gesture traced back to a moment of vulnerability. Bada, with her sharp intellect and disciplined approach to academics, had always been perceived as an unyielding force. However, beneath the exterior of stoicism lay a desire for connection and understanding.
One day, as you were preparing for a particularly challenging exam, Bada caught a glimpse of the stress that clouded your usually confident demeanor. Instead of seizing the opportunity to press her advantage, she recognized the humanity in your struggle. It was then that she made a silent pact with herself – to occasionally let you taste the sweetness of victory, even if it meant deliberately missing a question.
In the weeks that followed, as you continued to revel in your newfound success, Bada observed from the sidelines. She saw how your confidence blossomed, how the taste of victory spurred you to even greater heights. And in those moments, she found a peculiar satisfaction – the satisfaction of seeing you smile, even if it was at the cost of a single percentage point.
The days turned into weeks, and the routine of academic rivalry persisted. However, an unspoken understanding had developed between you and Bada. She continued to be the formidable competitor, pushing you to excel, but every now and then, a subtle gesture hinted at a connection that transcended grades and competition.
In the midst of this dynamic, a friendship, unacknowledged and yet quietly thriving, began to take root. The rivalry that had once been fueled by a desire for supremacy now carried the weight of shared victories and unspoken gestures of camaraderie.
As the semester progressed, the academic challenges continued, but the relationship between you and Bada took on a new dimension. The hallways that were once silent witnesses to whispered rivalries now echoed with the occasional laughter and shared insights.
The library, with its hushed whispers and the scent of old books, became an unlikely setting for the next chapter in your evolving connection with Bada. As you both immersed yourselves in your studies, the atmosphere was charged with an unspoken camaraderie that had gradually replaced the intense rivalry of your earlier encounters.
One day, as you were engrossed in your textbooks and notes, Bada looked up from her own stack of books. "Do you want to grab a coffee after this?" she asked, her tone casual but carrying a warmth that transcended the usual competitiveness.
The invitation caught you by surprise, but the genuine sincerity in her eyes made it impossible to decline. "Sure, I'd love that," you replied, offering a genuine smile and a light blush. The idea of sharing a coffee, something that had started as a casual outing, had now become a symbol of the connection you were building.
As you both ventured into the campus café, the familiar aroma of coffee beans enveloped you. The atmosphere was light, free from the usual undercurrents of rivalry that had defined your interactions. The conversation flowed effortlessly, weaving through topics beyond the confines of academia.
"I never knew you were into literature," you remarked, genuinely intrigued by this new side of Bada.
She chuckled, her eyes lighting up with enthusiasm. "Yeah, I've always loved getting lost in a good book. There's something magical about the way words can transport you to different worlds."
The exchange of personal interests continued, revealing shared passions for travel and a mutual appreciation for the intricacies of the Korean language. The coffee outings became a regular occurrence, each one peeling away another layer of the barriers that had once defined your relationship.
As weeks turned into months, the initial wariness between you and Bada melted away, paving the way for a genuine connection. The unspoken pact, where occasional victories were traded for moments of acknowledgment, remained intact.
One afternoon, as you sat in your usual corner of the café, sipping coffee and sharing laughs, Bada seemed a bit more reserved than usual. The air carried a subtle tension, and you couldn't help but notice the thoughtful glances she occasionally directed your way.
"You seem a bit quiet today," you observed, your tone gentle. "Everything okay?"
Bada took a deep breath, as if gathering her courage. "Yeah, everything's fine. Actually, there's something I've been wanting to talk to you about."
The shift in her demeanor caught your attention. "Sure, go ahead. We're friends, right?"
A hint of relief but quick sadness flickered in Bada's eyes. "Yeah, friends," she affirmed, her gaze meeting yours. "I wanted to say... I that I really love our time together, and I don't want to mess it up, but I need to be honest with you."
Curiosity tinged with a touch of concern filled your expression. "Of course, Bada. You can be honest with me."
Taking another deep breath, she confessed, "I've liked you for a long time now. More than just as a study partner or a friend. I wasn't sure if I should say anything, but I didn't want to keep it from you."
Surprise registered on your face as you absorbed her words. Bada, the once stoic academic rival, had just revealed a vulnerability that spoke volumes. The café, with its low hum of background chatter, seemed to quiet down as you processed her confession.
The pause lingered for a moment, tension hanging in the air. Then, unexpectedly, you found yourself smiling. "Bada, I appreciate your honesty. I didn't see this coming, but I have to admit, I've liked you too."
Her eyes widened in genuine surprise. "You do?"
"Yeah," you chuckled, the weight of the unspoken tension lifting. "I guess our connection goes beyond just acing exams and grabbing coffee. I like you, Bada, more than I thought."
Relief washed over her, and a genuine smile graced her lips. "I was worried I might mess things up between us."
You reached across the table, gently taking her hand. "Bada, our connection is stronger than that. I'm glad you told me. Let's see where this takes us, without the pressures of academic rivalry."
From that moment, the dynamics of your relationship with Bada shifted once again. The coffee outings, once symbols of friendly competition, now became a canvas for the blossoming romance. The barriers had crumbled, revealing a connection that transcended the expectations of academia.
As the days turned into nights, you and Bada navigated this new chapter with a shared understanding. The unspoken pact, built on the foundation of occasional victories and heartfelt acknowledgments, had paved the way for a love story that had quietly unfolded beneath the surface of academic competition.
— — — — — —
The test results, once a source of tension, became a mere formality in the journey of your academic and personal growth. The rivalry that had once defined your interactions now stood as a testament to the transformative power of unexpected connections.
One day, as you and Bada sat in the same lecture hall where the initial rivalry had taken root, the professor announced another round of test results. The atmosphere, once thick with tension, now held an air of camaraderie.
As the professor called out names and distributed the exams, you and Bada exchanged knowing glances. The competitive spirit remained, but it was no longer fueled by a desire for supremacy. It was a shared journey of growth, each victory and defeat a stepping stone in the evolution of your friendship.
When you received your test, you scanned the pages, your heart pounding with anticipation. The familiar "100%" greeted you, and you couldn't help but smile. Turning to Bada, you asked, "What did you get?" Curiosity and genuine interest colored your words.
Bada, maintaining her composed demeanor, replied, "99%," with a hint of a smile playing on her lips.
The realization hit you – this was not a defeat but a continuation of the unspoken pact. You smiled widely, not as a display of triumph, but as an acknowledgment of the shared journey you and Bada had undertaken.
"I guess we're maintaining the balance," you said, your voice filled with a newfound understanding.
Bada nodded, the glint of satisfaction in her eyes mirroring your own. The professor, unaware of the intricacies of your connection, continued with the announcements, and the hall filled with a sense of collective achievement.
As you and Bada walked out of the lecture hall, the sun casting a warm glow over the campus, the unspoken pact between you two lingered in the air. The rivalry had evolved into a friendship, a connection that defied the expectations of competitiveness.
In the heart of Seoul National University, where the halls echoed with the pursuit of knowledge, the story of you and Bada became a testament to the transformative power of unexpected connections. The exchange of glances had become laden with unspoken meanings, and every shared moment held a layer of intimacy that went beyond friendship. The sunsets over the campus felt warmer, and the laughter shared in the cafés echoed with the resonance of newfound affection.
One evening, as you both strolled through the campus, Bada couldn't resist a playful jab at your once intense rivalry. "Remember when you used to boast about being the smartest one in class?" she teased, nudging you lightly.
You chuckled, playing along. "Ah, those were the days when I had to remind you who the real brainiac was."
Bada raised an eyebrow, her eyes glinting with mischief. "Brainiac? Please, I seem to recall someone struggling to keep up with my brilliance."
You feigned offense, a playful glint in your eyes. "Oh, please. Your brilliance couldn't even match my wit."
The banter continued, each remark carrying the weight of shared history and a newfound camaraderie. As you both reached a quiet spot under a tree, the playfulness took a surprising turn. Bada, with a mischievous glint in her eyes, suddenly lunged at you, causing you to stumble backward.

Mental Toughness and Resilience (Post-Traumatic Growth) Ace of Diamond showcases athletes, particularly in high-stakes scenarios like baseball, whose resilience can be interpreted through the lens of post-traumatic growth (PTG). Characters like Eijun Sawamura demonstrate adaptive resilience, where their cognitive appraisal of failure serves not as a barrier but as a launching pad for growth. This is critical in sports where failure—whether in a game or practice—does not foster learned helplessness, but catalyzes self-actualization.
Flow State and Optimal Performance (Csikszentmihalyi’s Flow Theory)
The psychological construct of the Flow State is evident in high-performance athletes like Sawamura and his teammates during critical game moments. According to Csikszentmihalyi, the flow state occurs when skill and challenge meet at optimal levels, leading to complete immersion in the activity. The characters’ ability to enter a flow state enhances their strategic thinking, decision-making, and rapid execution during matches, which mirrors a real-world application of autotelic personality traits—those who derive satisfaction from the task itself.
Role Modeling (Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory)
Central to Ace of Diamond is the Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory, especially observational learning. Characters learn from one another through vicarious experiences. Seido’s captain, Chris, and mentor figures, act as role models whose behaviors and strategies are emulated by others. This model underscores self-regulation and the observational learning loop, where self-efficacy is developed via the observation of others’ successes and failures, increasing one's belief in their ability to execute the same tasks.
Group Dynamics and Team Cohesion (Tuckman's Stages of Group Development)
From the onset, Seido High’s baseball team undergoes Tuckman’s stages of group development, transitioning from forming to storming to norming and finally, performing. The nuanced conflicts during the storming phase reflect the in-group/out-group dynamics, which is key in understanding how initial inter-player tensions (especially between the rookies and upperclassmen) evolve into collective goal orientation. The psychological shift from individualistic to collective success also touches upon collective efficacy—the belief in the team’s shared capabilities.
Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and Intrinsic Motivation
A major psychological motivator in Ace of Diamond is the internal drive of characters to achieve success through intrinsic motivation. The characters are guided by Self-Determination Theory (SDT), which emphasizes three core needs: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Sawamura’s drive to improve and establish himself, in contrast to other more naturally skilled pitchers like Furuya, demonstrates competence motivation where personal growth becomes intrinsically satisfying. This manifests in continuous effort, not just for external rewards but for self-improvement.
Cognitive Dissonance and Identity Formation (Festinger’s Cognitive Dissonance Theory)
Cognitive dissonance plays a crucial role in the internal psychological conflicts seen in Ace of Diamond. Characters like Sawamura struggle with identity formation as they confront the tension between their self-perceptions and others' expectations. The dissonance between being the "ace" and the pressure to perform leads to adaptive coping mechanisms, allowing for psychological growth. This self-identity crisis and the resulting cognitive restructuring help characters like Sawamura resolve their inconsistencies in ways that solidify their mental fortitude.
Personality and Leadership Styles (Big Five Personality Traits and Leadership Models)
The characters exemplify distinct personalities based on the Big Five Personality Traits model: openness to experience (innovation in tactics), conscientiousness (dedication to rigorous training), extraversion (team motivation and leadership), agreeableness (cohesion), and neuroticism (management of anxiety in high-pressure situations). Notably, the leadership styles of players such as Eijun Sawamura (transformational leadership) contrast with those of characters like Furuya (transactional leadership). The interaction between different leadership styles influences group dynamics and team performance.

Real Estate and Social Media
Tumblr media
Real Estate and Social Media
In today's digitally driven world, social media has become a powerful force transforming industries, and real estate is no exception. From building a brand to closing a deal, real estate professionals are increasingly using platforms like Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube to engage with clients, promote properties, and drive sales. The integration of social media into real estate marketing is not just a trend—it’s a strategic necessity.
The Shift to Digital Engagement
Traditionally, property sales depended heavily on face-to-face meetings, site visits, newspaper ads, and word-of-mouth referrals. While these methods still have value, the rise of social media has opened new avenues to reach a wider and more targeted audience in real time. Whether it's a virtual tour, a carousel of high-resolution photos, or a live Q&A session, real estate professionals can now showcase their listings 24/7 to potential buyers across the globe.
Why Social Media Works for Real Estate
Visual Appeal Real estate is highly visual, and platforms like Instagram and Facebook are ideal for showcasing beautifully staged homes, scenic surroundings, and lifestyle features. High-quality visuals help clients imagine themselves living in the property, increasing emotional engagement and likelihood to inquire.
Targeted Advertising Social media platforms offer advanced targeting tools that allow realtors to reach specific demographics, locations, income groups, and even behavior patterns. This means ads for a ₹4 crore luxury apartment in Gurgaon can be shown only to high-net-worth individuals who have shown interest in luxury real estate.
Cost-Effective Marketing Compared to traditional advertising like print or television, social media campaigns can be run at a fraction of the cost, with more measurable results. Realtors can track views, clicks, leads, and conversions in real-time and optimize their strategy accordingly.
Building Trust and Brand Identity Consistent content sharing, expert tips, testimonials, behind-the-scenes videos, and live updates help build a trustworthy and authentic brand presence. Buyers today often check social media before making decisions, and a strong online presence can positively influence that choice.
Engagement and Real-Time Communication With features like comments, DMs (direct messages), WhatsApp integrations, and live sessions, realtors can engage directly with prospects. Questions can be answered instantly, virtual site visits can be scheduled quickly, and initial trust can be established even before a physical meeting.
Best Platforms for Real Estate
Instagram – Perfect for visually rich content, reels, and stories that show lifestyle, interiors, and real-time updates.
Facebook – Ideal for lead generation, targeted ads, groups, and event promotions like open houses or project launches.
LinkedIn – Great for connecting with investors, developers, and B2B networking, especially for commercial real estate.
YouTube – Powerful for long-form video content such as property walkthroughs, neighborhood tours, and expert interviews.
Content Ideas for Real Estate Social Media
Virtual property tours and walkthroughs
Client testimonials and success stories
Real estate market updates and tips
“Behind the scenes” of project construction or team culture
Educational reels or carousels (e.g., “Top 5 Tips for First-Time Buyers”)
Before/after renovation stories
Q&A sessions and live virtual open houses
Social Media Strategy for Realtors
To succeed on social media, real estate professionals need a solid strategy:
Define your audience – Know who you’re targeting (homebuyers, NRIs, investors, etc.).
Plan your content calendar – Stay consistent and diversify your content mix.
Invest in creatives and storytelling – High-quality photos, videos, and engaging captions make a difference.
Use paid ads smartly – Boost key listings, use lead forms, and remarket to engaged visitors.
Track performance – Use tools like Meta Ads Manager and Google Analytics to see what’s working and improve accordingly.
Final Thoughts
Real estate and social media are now deeply interconnected. With the right mix of creativity, consistency, and strategic targeting, social media can help realtors build brand credibility, reach high-intent buyers, and close deals faster than ever before. As more buyers begin their home search online, having a strong social media presence is no longer optional—it’s essential.

When North Korea's new warship capsized into the sea during its launch last month, it made international headlines. News organisations followed every development, from its successful refloating to its relaunch last Friday.
But why such interest, given there were no casualties, and the damage to the hull appeared relatively minor?
The intrigue has less to do with the failure itself and more with how Kim Jong Un reacted.
Kim immediately denounced the failure as "a criminal act" that "could not be tolerated", saying it had damaged the country's "dignity". He ordered that the ship be restored immediately, and those responsible be punished. Four party officials were subsequently arrested.
This furious outburst, followed by the ship's swift repair, teaches us a lot about the North Korean regime, whose moves are often so difficult to decipher.
First, it reveals how serious North Korea is about building a nuclear-armed navy.
Despite having a nuclear arsenal, which is growing in size and sophistication, and an enormous standing army, North Korea's navy is considered greatly inferior to those of its enemies - South Korea, Japan and the United States - who have some of the most powerful naval fleets in the world.
"Kim Jong Un believes nuclear weapons are the only way he can protect his country, and yet all it has at sea is an old submarine and some small support ships," said Choi Il, a retired South Korean navy captain.
Therefore, almost since the start of his reign, Kim has prioritised building a modern and powerful navy, equipped with nuclear weapons.
This warship is a key first step towards this goal. It is one of two destroyers North Korea has built over the past year, the first of which launched successfully in April. Weighing 5,000 tonnes, they are by far the biggest warships North Korea has, and are capable, in theory, of firing nuclear short-range missiles.
According to Mr Choi, who now heads South Korea's Submarine Research Institute, it is extremely rare for a destroyer of this class to capsize during its construction and launch, given the advanced technology required to build one.
This would therefore have been "a very embarrassing incident" for Kim Jong Un, he said, as it "highlights the limitations of North Korea's shipbuilding".
Worse still, this flagship project failed in front of his eyes. Kim was attending the ship's launch ceremony, along with his daughter and a crowd of spectators.
"North Korea is obsessed with showing off. I imagine they were planning a whole series of performances, so of course Kim couldn't help but be furious", Mr Choi added.
But experts in North Korea propaganda believe there is far more to Kim Jong Un's outburst than raw anger and humiliation.
Choosing to publicise the capsizing in the way he did was a deliberate political strategy, they say, and shows Kim is shifting away from the regime's tendency to conceal unpleasant truths.
Rachel Minyoung Lee from the Washington-based Stimson Centre, who has analysed North Korean propaganda for decades, explained how this has become a core pillar of Kim's propaganda strategy.
Before Kim came to power, and even in the early years of his rule, the regime would hide anything negative as a way to control the narrative.
But as information has started to spread more freely in North Korea, it has become harder to cover up such major incidents.
"The leadership decided it was almost silly to try and hide what people already knew, and much more effective to show people they were dealing with problems," Ms Lee said.
"Now, when there's a problem, you publicise it, you call out those responsible, and demonstrate to people that if you don't do your job, you will be held accountable. And in doing so, you let everyone know that the government and the leadership are doing their jobs well".
In the case of the warship, this strategy appears to have worked remarkably effectively. The repairs were completed ahead of schedule, in just over three weeks, defying the expectations of naval experts.
"The rapid relaunch shows how even a failure can be turned into a political success," said Kim Dong-yup, an assistant professor at the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul.
But he and others say Kim has used this incident not just to project success but to strengthen people's loyalty to the regime and its ideology – another consistent feature of his rule.
The ship capsized as it was launched sideways from the dock into the sea – a complicated maritime manoeuvre – and part of the bow got stuck on the launching ramp. But rather than present this as a technical failure, Kim Jong Un claimed the incident was caused by "absolute carelessness and irresponsibility."
In contrast, he praised a worker who died during the ship's construction, for "putting his blood and sweat" into the project.
"They turned his death into a symbol of devotion, to strengthen people's loyalty," said Professor Kim Dong-yup.
Rather than present Kim Jong Un as an infallible god as was the case for his father and grandfather, they elevated the loyal worker, he said. "This is a big shift in North Korea's governing technique and shows Kim Jong Un's astonishing ability to adapt and control the narrative".
The biggest takeaway for Ms Lee, the propaganda expert, is that "the North Koreans achieve whatever they set out to do."
"They set this goal of having a nuclear armed navy, and now they're demonstrating they're on their way to achieving that".
No-one thought they could build the destroyers in just over a year, or repair this damage in less than a month, but they have, Ms Lee added, much like they did with their nuclear and missile programme despite the world's initial scepticism.
The retired navy captain Mr Choi agreed. "People may look at this episode and laugh, and think 'oh, North Korea is so far behind', but they're making significant progress", he said.
Most concerning, say he and others, is that Kim Jong Un is intent on transforming his navy from one that is limited to patrolling its own seas into one that will be able to sail the world's oceans and launch pre-emptive nuclear strikes.
"We must be vigilant and prepare accordingly," he said.

John C. May: Steering John Deere into a Future of Smart Industrial Leadership
Tumblr media
In the world of smart manufacturing and industrial innovation, few names resonate with the same weight as John C. May, Chairman and CEO of John Deere. With nearly three decades of experience in one of the most iconic American companies, May exemplifies a rare combination of visionary leadership, operational excellence, and a relentless commitment to digital transformation.
John Deere’s reputation as a global leader in agricultural and construction machinery is well known. But under the stewardship of John C. May, the brand has been infused with fresh energy, transitioning from a traditional equipment manufacturer into a dynamic technology enterprise rooted in smart industrial solutions. For CEOs, startup founders, and MNC managers looking to understand the future of the industrial sector, May’s journey offers profound lessons in business strategy, resilience, and innovation.
Early Days and Rise Through the Ranks
John C. May joined Deere & Company in 1997. With a background in finance and systems operations, he brought an analytical rigor that quickly earned him key leadership positions. Over the years, May held multiple roles across different segments of the company, from managing global platforms in Asia and Latin America to spearheading the integration of digital solutions into core machinery.
By the time he was named CEO in 2019, May had already left a considerable mark on the company’s modernization roadmap. He was instrumental in building John Deere’s precision agriculture ecosystem, which has since become a defining feature of the company’s product offerings and value proposition.
Visionary Leadership in the Digital Age
Tumblr media
[Source - Forbes]
May’s leadership philosophy is rooted in a simple yet powerful premise: if John Deere is to remain relevant, it must lead, not follow, in the era of smart manufacturing. One of his first initiatives as CEO was to scale the company’s digital backbone, integrating artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and telematics into everyday operations.
He championed the idea that John Deere equipment should no longer be seen as just hardware, but as smart machines embedded within a larger data ecosystem. This repositioning has transformed how the company develops, markets, and supports its equipment worldwide.
Navigating Crisis with Strategic Clarity
Every great business leader is tested by adversity, and May’s tenure coincided with unprecedented global disruptions. From the COVID-19 pandemic to supply chain bottlenecks and geopolitical tensions, May has had to navigate rough waters. Yet, his strategic clarity and calm demeanor allowed John Deere not only to survive but thrive.
During the height of the pandemic, John Deere accelerated its remote diagnostics services, contactless equipment delivery, and virtual training systems. Under May’s direction, the company kept its factories running while prioritizing employee safety, resulting in minimal operational downtime and sustained revenue performance.
Building a Culture of Innovation
While many leaders talk about innovation, John C. May institutionalized it. He restructured internal teams to align around digital-first priorities and pushed for faster go-to-market cycles. He championed cross-functional collaboration, ensuring that R&D, engineering, and business development worked as a unified force.
Under May’s guidance, John Deere has significantly expanded its investment in emerging technologies. From acquiring cutting-edge AI firms like Blue River Technology to partnering with robotics startups, the company is actively shaping the next frontier of industrial equipment.
Emphasis on Customer-Centricity
Tumblr media

A core component of May’s success has been his emphasis on putting the customer at the center of every decision. Recognizing that farmers, contractors, and forestry operators are under increasing pressure to produce more with fewer resources, May ensured that John Deere’s innovations address real-world pain points.
With digital platforms like the John Deere Operations Center, customers can now visualize their entire fleet, monitor crop performance, and receive data-driven insights to boost productivity. These tools go beyond utility; they form the core of a new kind of customer relationship built on intelligence and empowerment.
Commitment to Sustainability
In an era where ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) metrics matter more than ever, John C. May has positioned John Deere as a responsible and forward-looking enterprise. The company has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving fuel efficiency, and supporting sustainable land use practices.
Deere’s electric and hybrid equipment initiatives, coupled with its support for regenerative agriculture, underscore a broader shift toward sustainable smart manufacturing. May has repeatedly stated that profitability and environmental responsibility are not mutually exclusive; they are deeply interconnected.
Strategic Global Expansion
May’s global outlook has also played a crucial role in John Deere’s success story. By strengthening the company’s footprint in emerging markets and adapting products for local needs, Deere has grown its international revenue base.
From Asia-Pacific to Latin America, the company’s smart manufacturing equipment is now used across a wide range of environmental and economic contexts. This globalization is both a growth strategy and a diversification buffer, allowing John Deere to hedge against regional slowdowns while capturing new demand.
Talent Development and Inclusive Leadership
A key part of May’s legacy is his belief in nurturing talent. He has invested in leadership development, diversity and inclusion, and STEM education pipelines. Under his leadership, John Deere has improved employee engagement scores and earned recognition as a top employer in the smart manufacturing sector.
This focus on people is central to enabling smart manufacturing at scale. As automation and AI redefine industrial roles, May’s emphasis on workforce retraining ensures that the human side of the equation is not neglected.
Financial Performance and Market Trust
Under May’s leadership, John Deere has delivered robust financial performance. The company’s revenue crossed $60 billion in 2023, with consistent year-over-year growth driven by strong demand for its smart manufacturing equipment solutions.
At a time when industrial firms face margin compression and capital volatility, May’s approach to operational efficiency and tech-driven differentiation offers a compelling blueprint for sustainable growth.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Smart Manufacturing Industry
Tumblr media
[Source - RCR Wireless News]
John C. May is not just managing John Deere, he’s actively reshaping the future of the industrial sector. As technologies like IoT, machine learning, and blockchain converge, May is preparing John Deere to lead in the next wave of industrial innovation.
The company’s investment in autonomy, connectivity, and real-time analytics reflects a deep commitment to staying ahead of the curve. With pilot projects in smart factories, cloud-integrated supply chains, and next-gen data platforms, John Deere is fast becoming a benchmark for industrial transformation.
This next chapter will undoubtedly be anchored in smart manufacturing, a concept that has become synonymous with John C. May’s leadership philosophy.
Conclusion
John C. May’s rise to the helm of John Deere is not just a success story, it is a blueprint for 21st-century leadership. His ability to blend tradition with transformation, strategy with empathy, and innovation with operational excellence sets him apart as one of the most influential business leaders of our time.
For startup founders, CEOs, and corporate leaders seeking inspiration, May’s journey offers a masterclass in aligning purpose with performance. Through his visionary embrace of smart manufacturing, John C. May has not only secured John Deere’s future, but he has elevated the entire industrial landscape.

HOW DOES THE CLIENT INITIATE THE PROCESS regarding their construction project?
The client initiates a construction project by defining the project's scope, objectives, and constraints, often through a project initiation document or feasibility study. This includes outlining the project's purpose, parameters, and scope. The client then typically engages with a design team to develop preliminary designs and schematic plans. Once the client approves the design, it's time to release the construction documents and begin the construction phase. They initiate the construction process primarily during the preconstruction phase. A key step involves the release of a Request for Quote (RFQ). This document includes the project design. This sets the groundwork for the build and allows the client to solicit bids from contractors. The client management process becomes more complex for commercial clients with large-scale projects.
As a Project Manager and a Master of Architecture with experience in Project and Design Management in large-scale commercial facilities, multi-story offices, high-rise administration buildings, residential buildings, educational buildings, and industrial buildings, I recognize the significance of efficiently starting a project. When the client begins the process, it usually includes several crucial steps:
Defining the Project Scope: The client should clearly define the objectives, requirements, and constraints of the project. This includes outlining the desired outcomes, budget, timeline, and any specific architectural requirements.
Engaging Stakeholders: The client should identify and engage relevant stakeholders such as end-users, project sponsors, architects, engineers, and other key parties. It's important to understand their needs and expectations from the project.
Selecting the Project Team: The client may be involved in selecting the project team, including architects, designers, engineers, and other professionals. They should ensure that the team has the necessary expertise and experience to deliver the project successfully.
Establishing Communication Channels: The client should set up clear communication channels to facilitate effective collaboration between all project stakeholders. This may involve regular meetings, progress reports, and a centralized platform for sharing project information.
Setting Project Goals and Deliverables: The client needs to work with the project team to establish specific goals, milestones, and deliverables for the project. This includes defining the architectural design requirements, construction phases, and any other project-specific deliverables.
Developing the Project Plan: The client, in collaboration with the project team, should develop a comprehensive project plan that outlines the overall project approach, timeline, budget, and resource allocation.
Risk Assessment and Mitigation: The client should identify potential risks and challenges associated with the project and work with the project team to develop strategies for mitigating these risks.
Legal and Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring that all legal and regulatory requirements are considered and addressed is crucial. This includes obtaining necessary permits, adhering to building codes, and meeting any other legal obligations.
Signing the Project Agreement: Once the initial project parameters are defined, the client and the project team should formalize their agreement through a signed contract or agreement that outlines the scope, responsibilities, and terms of the project.
Effective initial steps build a strong foundation, paving the way for successful project delivery.

Succession Planning for Construction Businesses: Why an ESOP Could be Right for You
Building a successful construction business is not an easy undertaking. It’s a complex industry, with unique financial and operational challenges. It’s not surprising that many construction business owners struggle to find suitable buyers for their companies when they're ready to retire.
Implementing an employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) can be a good option, providing an exit strategy that gives owners time to collaborate and strategize with the company leaders who will succeed them, while safeguarding the culture and values of the business they worked so hard to build.
Is an ESOP structure the right succession plan for your construction business? Here’s an overview of how it works, along with some of the key advantages and risks.
How an ESOP Works
An ESOP is a qualified retirement plan that invests primarily in company stock and in which employees become beneficial owners of that stock. Businesses that satisfy IRS requirements and have stock/ownership shares (C or S corporations) can sponsor an ESOP.
Under an "unleveraged" ESOP, the business owner sells all or part of the company to a trust that holds the stock for plan participants (employee-owners). Contributions can be new shares of company stock or cash to buy existing shares. As a succession planning strategy, many owners sell their shares over long periods by making annual contributions to the trust.
Under a "leveraged" ESOP, the plan obtains outside financing to buy shares at a sale price set by an independent appraiser. The company then contributes enough cash annually to cover the principal and interest payments.
In either case, shares are typically allocated to participants' accounts according to a formula based on each employee's compensation. Employees usually become eligible after a year of employment; legally, they must attain eligibility after two years of service.
An ESOP includes a vesting schedule establishing the percentage of an account balance each participant is entitled to receive following events such as termination, retirement, disability or death. Payouts can be installments or lump sums in stock or cash.
ESOP Benefits for Your Business
Some business owners choose the ESOP model for their succession plan out of a desire to protect a company legacy. Third party buyers have no obligation to preserve your company’s culture or reputation. Private equity companies have little incentive to do so.
A properly structured and carefully administered ESOP offers a way to preserve what you’ve built, through the employees you built it with. By giving your employees a genuine stake in the ongoing success of your business, an ESOP can also inspire a newfound spirit of engagement and productivity.
The tax benefits are notable, too. For example, C corporations that sell at least 30% of their shares to an ESOP can defer capital gains taxes by reinvesting the proceeds into "qualified replacement property" — generally, securities issued by domestic operating corporations. (Additional details and requirements apply.) S corporations wholly owned by an ESOP aren't subject to federal income taxes at all.
Because ESOP contributions are made pretax, participants don't incur tax liability until they receive distributions. And those taxes can be deferred if distributions are rolled over into a qualified retirement account. To learn more about whether an ESOP may be right for your business, look for a partner with experience providing accounting, financial and business advisory services for ESOPs.
Risks to Consider
ESOPs are not risk-free, however. In some cases, they can put a strain on cash flow. The National Center for Employee Ownership has estimated the cost of setting up a plan based on periodic cash or stock contributions at "under $100,000," but setup costs can vary. The organization also estimates that, for most closely held companies, ESOP transaction costs run between $150,000 and $400,000.  Of course, selling a business to a third party also generates legal, accounting and brokerage costs, as well as other fees — without the ESOP benefits.
Another potential risk is a lower sales price. Under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), an ESOP can't pay more than fair market value for shares. A third party might pay more — especially if your construction business specializes in a lucrative industry sector.
ESOPs also bring additional administrative obligations. Retirement plans are subject to ERISA and must comply with various federal rules and regulations. There may be state-specific requirements as well.
