The mercenary 'Mechwarrior and the ComStar nun - Scene 7-1
EXT. NEW SAMOS EAST CASTLE — SUNSET 19:15 hours
NARRATOR I ordered the pilot to do a low circling pass over the castle to show Alina my domain. The alpine valley cradled the bones of a Star League Castle Brian—ashen ferrocrete walls, fifteen meters tall, draped in lichen and patched with pale limestone— crowned by masts where banners fluttered in the breeze: the Draconis Combine’s black dragon on red, and the Black Riders’ black lobster tail helmet on an orange circle. Laser and PPC barrels bristled from turrets. A circular pond with a vitrified rim, a scar from an orbital bombardment two centuries past, glowed bronze under the sinking sun. In the courtyard below, the entire Black Riders battalion, forty ‘Mechs, stood in parade formation—silent, gleaming giants aligned shoulder to shoulder, black with the burnished steel trim glistening with the last rays of Kirchbach’s oversized sun, half-dipped in gold and crimson on the horizon.
Alina looked in awe: ALINA: It’s a real castle! Kolossal! Like in the holovids! Why are the walls so tall?
VIKTOR: To prevent ‘Mechs with jump jets to go over them.
ALINA: Those are your ‘Mechs? So many! They look like statues. And look at the people! They look like ants next to them! So big!
NARRATOR Pride swelled in me, a khan parading his host to his captive princess. We completed the circle while some waved at us and climbed the manor perched in the mountain side. An eagle circled overhead. A Roman would have called that an omen. Good or bad. Who knew?
[Surveillance Recording: ROM Post K-91 // Kirchbach Range // New Samos East // Gerlitzen // 3025-09-14 // 19:34 local time]
ROM Operator (off-voice, muttering):
“Here he comes…”
The camera swings skyward. A military helicopter, a steel shark, drops into the valley, its hull molten metal in the glare of the setting sun. The Black Riders’ BattleMechs shimmer below on the castle courtyard.
ROM Operator (low): "Parade formation? They’re supposed to be inside the bays. A show for the guest."
Dust swirls around the helipad. The helicopter settles its turbines fading to a piercing whine. A bright, Napoleonic brassy fanfare—Cérémonial de Présentation—erupts, its thirty-second burst of trumpets heralding the arrival. The door opens. Viktor Starkov steps out, elegant in a Draconis Combine ‘Mechwarrior dress uniform—black cap, white tunic, black trousers with red stripes, red boots, black baton with a platinum knob. He turns to the pilot, and clasps his hand, a firm clap on the shoulder. VIKTOR (warm but commanding):
You flew like a demon. Don’t rush back to base. The sergeant major’ll find you a bunk in the barracks. Join the party—eat, drink, sleep. Have fun.
Das ist ein Befehl!
The pilot stammers a stunned “Jawohl, Kommandant!” and hurries off, clutching his cap like a kid invited to a feast.
ALINA (stepping out, white cloak and ComStar robes rippling in the rotor wash, skeptical):
Are you always so... generous? Or is this all just part of the show?
VIKTOR (glancing at her, flat):
I pity the servants in your house.
(beat)
VIKTOR (steel in his voice):
I reward well those who serve me well.
Alina’s lips part, but no retort comes. Her eyes flicker—something guarded, something stung. She turns away, clutching the rose bouquet Viktor hands her from a stowage bin. The camera zooms in, her face lit by the setting sun.
ROM Operator (softly): “Beautiful.”
Below, twenty troopers of the honor guard stand ready in Combine tan uniforms and brown leather padded jackets overlaid with silvery chainmail, white gauntlets, and gleaming steel helmets. Each holds a chromed vibroblade, raised high to form a crossed arch—a corridor of gleaming steel and tradition.
ALINA (curious, eyeing the troopers): Helms? Swords? Chainmail? On infantry? Ach, that’s so… medieval.
VIKTOR (dry): Arrows, Alina. No firearms in this planet, partisans use bows—ballistic vests don’t stop arrow points. We spun titanium wire from ‘Mech scraps and turned into rings, and the camp followers women linked them. Light as silk, strong as steel. Like you. Come.
VIKTOR’S NARRATION (Private Journal):
"She stared—eyes wide, lips parted—as the vibroblades caught fire in the sun. And for a moment, I saw it too: a wedding pageant, dressed as a military salute. She looked like a bride—white robes, red roses—and I, in my dress uniform, her groom guiding her through an arch of swords. I didn’t plan it that way. Or maybe I did. Heart has reasons mind doesn’t understand."
Alina hesitates, then smiles—flattered, radiant. She takes Viktor’s offered arm, the band starts playing —The Nuptial March— of Mendelssohn, descend the helipad steps and they walk beneath the crossed blades, slow and deliberate.
ALINA (low, teasing):
That music! This… feels like a wedding, Viktor. Should I be worried?
VIKTOR (deadpan, but a glint in his eye):
Only if my ex-wife shows up to crash the party
ROM Operator (chuckling): “Wedding, huh? Feels like it.”
She laughs softly, her arm tightening on his. The camera pulls back, framing the arch of vibroblades against the crimson horizon, then tilts down to follow them.

RUSSIAN CIRCLES: Starting off this mix with INSTRUMENTAL METAL from Chicago, Illinois. Not enough instrumental metal type music in the world I say. This stuff is varied, heavy, emotional, and at times beautiful. But you still might fall off the hi rise and on to the stiff ironworks below if you aren't careful.
MACHUKHA: Now for another flavor of POST/AVANT METAL from the Ukraine. It's got BLACK METAL in there along with some PUNK/HARDCORE styles. The name translates as "step-mother" and I can only think of the cruel and evil variety forcing me into ghastly chores in the basement while this music plays.
In this trap, it’s so soothing to cease breathing
SWAMPWORM: On to Germany and this GRIND/BLACK METAL about the mythical kraken. Seems like a long way from the swamp to the sea but the blastbeats and chaotic shredding will take us there (in pieces). Everything flows back to where it all started.
A lonely mountain Unassailable in his heaviness
And obsessed with Cyclopean dreams
REAPING FLESH: It's time for FLORIDIAN DEATH METAL by way of Milan, Italy. This was released last year (featured it in a previous mix) but came out on vinyl early this year. Think AUTOPSY and MASSACRE but with more modern studio production and you're on the right track. Rage into the abyss of existence and join the smooshed skullfaced vomit heads with me.
MORTAL WOUND: More DEATH METAL this time out of Los Angeles, California that yet again prays at the altar of 90's era DM bands before them. Heavy drumming, grotesque guitar, and disgusting vocal puking check all the boxes for me. Uncredited airbrush swamp baby cover art says "check it out!" and I won't deny them.
VICIOUS BLADE: Mayhem rides again with this DEATH/THRASH METAL from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Seriously unhinged and living in a world of heavy metal skeletal warriors this track had me bouncing around the studio. This is the title track from an upcoming September release and I hope the rest of it brings this level of METAL to us all! Raise a skeletal fist in metal HAIL to this cover art by James Bousema or be slain by the swords!
MAYHEMIC: DEATH/THRASH METAL from Chile up next and it's going to beat your skinny jean wearing ass into the dirt. Speed, brutality, and riffs with catchy hooks is all I need in life. I'm a simple man. Fossil volcano attack cover art by Bastian Velasquez.
MAUL: Closing out the mix with one of THE DEATH METAL bands of now. Straight out of Fargo they're back with even more evil music to wreck your brain. I don't need to sell you on them or the label by now right? This is the title track and has additional vocals by Vincent Bennett from Acacia Strain. He is also the vocalist for the hardcore band Cockpunch. I love it when HC/DM musicians play together! Seaside druid cult entering the horrid dimensional mouth cover art by Wyrmwalk.
THAT'S ALL FOR THIS WEEK - LEAVE YOUR COMMENTS ON THIS POST OR IN THE REBLOGS OR SEND PYSCHIC WAVES

Prog-Doom Trio APE VERMIN Blast New EP, 'Arctic Noise’
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Billy Goate

Album Art by Steven Yoyada
One of the most impressive release years on record was 2018, when all the big dogs of doom dropped new albums. It was a tough year for a fledgling band to make its big splash, but somehow APE VERMIN made us all turn around and take notice, birthing a massive full-length debut 'Sonic Monolith' (2018) -- still a favorite among doomers. Now, we herald the return of the North Carolina heavyweights with an extended play record, 'Arctic Noise' (2021).
Having already crossed the 2-3 year threshold that seems to either make or break many a promising band, Ape Vermin seem here to stay as they near a half-decade together. Originating in 2017, Brett Lee (guitar, vox), William Deal (bass), and Charlie Burleson (drums) dub their style progressive doom. Through firmly grounded to the storied tradition of deep, reverberating doom, these guys are explorers who like ancient man simply are searching for new horizons.
“Our records are stepping stones for us,” frontman Brett Lee states. “We put our heart and soul into them and where Sonic Monolith had a very drone-type feel with an avalanche of groove, this new EP is a little more over the edge, and more melodic at times. We wanted this EP to represent the celebration of echo, death, and rebirth.”
Based in the small town of Valdese with barely 5,000 souls to speak of and nestled near the Catawba River 'neath the looming mountains, Ape Vermin have developed a club weilding style that's also surprisingly spiritual. Their bio depicts their artful style as comp[ose of "juddering riffs, thundering drums and otherworldly concepts that underpin the sheer mania of their music, along with hypnotic riffs and nimble fretwork" which gives"genuine virtuosity to the sonic vistas they create." That, my beloved Doomers & Stoners, I can firmly endorse.
And now to the record before us. We first encounter on Arctic Noise a song called "Megaliths Of Echo." Warping pedal effects and feedback are interrupted by a declamatory guitar lead accented by bass and drums, establishing our main theme. If you listen carefully, a story is being told in the music alone. Chugging riffage erupts with a stampede of rhythm bringing us caveman-like grunting, "Arctic Drone! Asteroid Explode! Shadow! Behold! Echo! Unfold! Astral Fate, Colossus Awake!"
Something momentus has happened, and suddenly the mood shifts down to a Cathedralesque riff that reminds me of that chilling moment on "Tower of Silence" when Lee Dorian announced, "The circle of time has stopped...sun no longer shines." And we're but five minutes into this gigantic near 17 minute slab of ice core.
Fire in the arctic! To celebrate this guilt. We've been surrounded, By the ice! We've killed the martyr, to set free this realm. We've been surrounded, By the ice!
Fire in the arctic! We've been surrounded! We've killed the martyr! The stone has fallen!
It's clear that someone's doom has come. For a moment, you can see it in your mind's eye, perhaps a churning in the gut, as the Neanderthal DNA still abiding inside has a sudden flashback to this momentous day in prehistory. What is happening? No one knows. Confusion abounds. All one can do is stand, watch in awe, and contemplate their fate.
We fade in the end, You've been holding the earth, We've been mining the sun, You will fade in the end.
I talked last night to frontman Brett Lee, who shared: "These songs were written during an intense emotional period." You can see the lyrics both describing some long ago fantastic calamity and also doubling as a metaphor for the bewilderment that comes with change and uncertainty, which all of us know far too well in recent days due to pandemic pandemonium.
Open the door, To find reason to kill, Locked up inside, For 10,000 years.
Something is encased in ice, and thawing. An ancient spirit lies within with the raw instinct for survival. It grabs us in our weakest moments and shouts, "Live, god damn, you, live!" The emotion laden writhing of the axeman seems to stir up such sentiment as I listen. Then a reminder of my own mortality.
We fade in the end, We echo.
We have such a short time to live. Our time is now. Let's attack it with the same uncouth gusto of our forebears, who struggled to survive in the ice and snow. The words of Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song" comes to mind in these closing minutes:
We come from the land of the ice and snow From the midnight sun where the hot springs flow The hammer of the gods Will drive our ships to new lands To fight the horde, sing and cry Valhalla, I am coming

Ancient Ruin takes the stage next, with a Near Eastern sounding motif with an attractive hook accompanied by tribal beat and voices singing in Forming The Void like harmony, "Orion." Following this is a vicious drum dominant slog and once again, we hear from our gruff caveman, who exclaims:
Fading out, Cosmic temple Riding out of this hell fear thy brother, meet thy maker Feel the darkness in my soul.
It's clear a religious ritual of some sort is underway, perhaps in response to the inexplicable disaster of the opening number.
We finish our adventure with the namesake track, Arctic Noise, which could very well serve as a Part B to the previous song. The riffage here seems more curious and wandering. A tale is told 'round a cave sheltered camp fire as cold, vicious winds blow about.
Arctic samurai, Astral vision May the arc of life BURN! Ancient avalanche echo All hail noise
I am the wretch I am the fiend Out of the void and in the machine I am the failure I am the one Out of the rapture and into the sun.
A searing solo breaks through that reminded me of one we'd hear on the first High on Fire record, only it begins feeling kind of wobbly and wounded, as if in pain. It quickly becomes seized by adrenaline and expresses itself in a confident, warm-blooded tone. I haven't said enough good things about the drumming so far, but it really shines in the second half of this song, and of course William Deal's basswork is as hearty as ever. The song ends on a cliffhanger, as if to say: "To be continued."
"I leave a lot of imagination in the lyrics," Brett told me, but dispels any notion that this is thematically linked to their debut LP, 'Sonic Monolith' (2021). He ended our conversation with an intriguing footnote: "Although deep in the lyrics in the debut album and also this E.P may you unlock what is to come next!"
Next did you say? That's something to look forward to, for damn sure! What better time than now to become a fan of Ape Vermin and revel in their dirty, gritty doom and fuzz-loaded stoner vibe!
I would be remiss were I to compliment the extraordinary album art by Steven Yoyada (who also penned the remarkable cover for our recent Doomed & Stoned in Denver compilation). Gaze upon this moment frozen in fantasy and you'll discover that it, too, has captured something of the record's soul.
Arctic Noise by Ape Vermin will be officially see the light of day on May 7th via Koloss Records (pre-order here). Fans of Conan, High on Fire, and Mastodon are you listening? Good, because Doomed & Stoned is rocking this mother in its entirety today.
Give ear...

Swedish mistborn translations: In which Dockson is a total creep
A compilation of my thoughts surrounding the Swedish mistborn translations for The Final Empire and The Well of Ascension.
Overall the books work surprisingly great. It might be the Germanic influences because skaa, koloss, synod, kandra etc. all sound incredibly swedish. To the point where I genuinely thought they were translated and that it would be hard to switch to english. Ska, koloss, syna, kan are all common words. The Synod works especially well since syna translates roughly to analyze while viewing something, so calling it synoden (small grammatical adjustment) gives it a vibe similar to “those who scan facts.” Koloss also means giant.
Though that is more on Sanderson than any translator. (It ironically is a lot more comprehensive than the gibberish that Alik speaks, which for the record reads similar to spooks street slang)
Pewter being called “soft tin” (mjuktenn) is awfully ironic.
Poor Elend is far too close to Elände (misery)
You can tell the books had different translators and the inconsistency of Vin being referred to as lady or fröken (miss) is annoying
However, had I not known that Kell and Dock were good guys I might have genuinely crawled into the book and punched them during their first meeting with Vin.
Instead of calling her “child” and “lass” they instead refer to her as “lilla vän” and “tösabit.” Fairly direct translations and neither are technically horrible if not for the context. Lilla vän (little friend) basically means buddy and is commonly used as an affectionate term towards children (parents and close relatives/family friends can still sometimes use it towards their adult children tho), it also happens to be THE poster child for sexism in the work environment. Generally if she’s above ten and not your child DON’T. I typically use it towards baby Yoda. Tösabit is only used by Dockson and is much worse. Tös is the literal translation of lass with tösabit being a variation used that literally means “piece of girl” or if used in english tiny girl. Not typically used when referring to someone and is fully appropriate when speaking generally. When used here towards Vin however it comes across as somewhat sexist/degrading or far too affectionate (not in a sexual way tho don’t worry).
In the context of them being complete strangers who just beat up the previous authority figure in her life leaving her terrified, it comes across more like them calling her “sweetheart” or “cupcake.” And just overall being far to affectionate It is however adorable when they use the same terms five hundred pages in when she trusts them and they are close. So the contrast adds some layers to the story.
Tindwyl also calls her “lilla vän”, but I don’t think I have to explain why it is different coming from a woman in a somewhat maternal position.
Slightly sad that the rest did not get translated but that’s what he gets for writing books to big to be considered profiteable.

At least they’re pretty, despite being impossible to keep clean. (Who decided to make giant white hardbacks out of super sensitive material that can’t handle water in the slightest!?!)
#cosmere#mistborn#kelsier#dockson#vin venture#swedish stormlight would have been a disaster tho#like sfb had to call the highprinces tiny kings in their synopsis#de strålande riddarna#skärvsvärd#skärvrustning

Generazione 90210 (3/3)

Mistborn book 2 - The Well of Ascension part 2.0 chapters 12-19 - first read
[Spoilers for the chapters covered and all previous chapters]
Predictions:
•Where to begin? Who got body snatched? Would the kandra know to imitate Spook’s Eastern street slang, and laugh at Breeze’s story about poisoning the camp’s water supply? Probably not. Breeze noted that Ham’s sense of humor was getting worse, could it be him? Clubs didn’t seem too suspicious to me, so that means it’s most likely him, but if I had to choose right now, I’d probably say Dockson, since he didn’t appear in that last chapter. Ooo, the real kick in the head would be if it was Elend. Was Vin ever away from him long enough? No, it’s not him.
•We still don’t have an identity for the Watcher, but I still say it’s Reen. Except, it’s more likely to be a new character we’ve never met before.
•Will Marsh betray Sazed? Yes...yes he will.
Part 2.0: Ghosts in the Mist (chapters 12-19)
Chapter 12
Marsh and Sazed reach Seran. They go down into the fortress. Marsh is certain it is empty, but isn’t sure why. They explore it. Sazed records his observations into a coppermind. “You should not care about the Inquisitors. They are not worthy of your record.” Marsh seems to be ashamed of the Inquisitors. So far he’s defying my expectations. I don’t know how to feel about this.
They split up. Sazed finds a stairway and goes further down. He finds a wall that has text scratched into it. It is the writing of Kwaan, quotes of which are at the beginning of each chapter. He begins to read it, when Marsh comes back to him, and says it was a mistake to come here, and that they should leave. Sazed convinces him to let him take charcoal rubbings of the etchings.
I spent the entire chapter waiting for the other shoe to drop, and it never did. They haven’t left yet, so there’s still time for things to go south in the next Sazed chapter. However, I have to admit perhaps I have misjudged Marsh, and I have no clue where the story will go from here. I still find him creepy, and I’m not sure I’ll ever fully trust him, but this chapter has eased my mind about him a little bit. On the other hand, he felt inexplicably drawn here, and after they got here he seemed agitated and wanted to leave. I’m not sure what to make of that. There may be more going on here than meets the eye.
I wonder what the rest of Kwaan’s text will say?
Chapter 13
Vin questions OreSeur to find out what she can learn about kandras, to see if she can figure out who the impostor is. Some questions he answers willingly, some he has to be commanded to answer, and some he won’t answer even if she commands him. “The kandra is a spy, sent to gather information for another human.” Ham, Dockson, Clubs, and Spook all have hours unaccounted for, so none of them can be ruled out. An Allomancer can’t Riot or Soothe the emotions of a kandra. Kandra can’t use Allomancy.
“Then I may leave? ...You do not wish to command me, so our Contract is dissolved?” It’s claimed that kandra are great actors, but I feel at certain points in this conversation, such as this one, OreSeur misunderstands Vin. Can they really be so convincing if they misunderstand the humans they are supposed to be infiltrating? Or is it just the relationship between these two particular characters that causes misunderstanding. Vin has trouble understanding OreSeur, so it goes both ways, I suppose.
She asks OreSeur what he loves and hates, but he doesn’t want to say. She tells him she loves the mists, the power, the freedom. She hates being afraid.
Vin feels the bronze pulse that she felt when she encountered the misty figure. She finds it inside a building. She asks it, “Why have you been watching me?” It seems to disappear, but then it attacks her, grabbing her arm. She falls out the window. Flaring metal, she survives the fall. OreSeur asks if she needs assistance, but she shakes her head and runs away.
Elend is meeting with Breeze, Ham, Spook, Dockson, and Clubs. “Any of these men could be an impostor, Elend thought. The thought still seemed insane to him.” This section is an Elend POV, so that rules him out as the impostor. They talk about how they are going to deal with the two armies. After discussing different possibilities, Elend says he wants to get the two armies to attack each other.
The guard, Captain Demoux interrupts to say the guards caught someone eavesdropping on the meeting. It was a Terriswoman that Elend recognized from being at the assembly. She wants to speak to Elend alone. When the others hesitate, she says the Mistborn outside the window should be able to deal with her.
Chapter 14
The Terriswoman admits she lied about Vin being outside the window. She begins instructing Elend to be more commanding and kingly. She says the people don’t respect him, and so he needs to demand respect if he is going to be a leader. Her name is Tindwyl.
Vin comes back, and Tindwyl leaves. Vin doesn’t like what giving up the kingdom would do to Elend. Vin asks Elend what he knows about the Deepness. She is worried about the misty figure, but reluctant to tell Elend, because he didn’t believe her last time. When he leaves, she sees mist outside the window. “I will not fear you...and I will find your secret.”
Chapter 15
Eight days after leaving Seran, Sazed wakes up alone. Marsh is gone. Grrrr Marsh, what are you up to? Don’t break my not-quite-trust so soon. Sazed decides to go without him. He comes to a village. He can smell death coming from it. “These people had died of starvation and dehydration.”
“I must be mistaken about the starvation...it must have been a plague...a disease.” He finds one living man. He is terrified of going outside because of the mist. He says that the mist didn’t go away after a few hours; that it stayed for days; weeks. The mist let some get away, but killed others. Once again, my guess is that this is an effect of the Deepness. The man had turned to cannibalism to survive. Sazed pulls the man outside, and he runs away.
Sazed realizes something is very wrong in the world. He puts on a steelmind with months worth of strength stored in it to run quickly to Luthadel.
Chapter 16
Vin looks through the logbook of the Hero, looking for clues of the misty figure, and of the Deepness. Seems like she is about to, if she hasn’t already, come to the same conclusion I did about the mist and the Deepness. She finds a passage that describes a dark thing that follows him, perhaps made of a black fog, or mist. The references to the Deepness make it clear that it is dangerous, killing thousands, but not saying what it is.
She comes across a page where the Hero says that he has to assume he is not mad, that the thing following him is real, and he must make the decision to continue on his quest. Vin determines she must make the same choice.
Tindwyl has Elend try on a military style uniform, and tells him he can’t wear anything else until the siege is over. She tells him, “a good king is one who is trusted by his people—and one who deserves that trust.”
Chapter 17
Elend and Vin go to meet the messenger Straff sent, and Vin recognizes him as the Watcher. His name is Zane. So is that his real name, or an alias? At least we now have a name besides just “the Watcher.” He says Straff wants Elend to meet at Straff’s tent. Elend tells Zane he will think about it.
Later that night while Vin is out doing her rounds, Zane shows up. They have a showdown, with some chasing and some sparring. Vin realizes he is better at Allomancy than she is, and so she wants to continue sparring with him to hone her skills.
Chapter 18
Zane hears the voice of “God” telling him to kill any person he sees. He ignores it most of the time. He knows he is insane, but can mostly keep it under control. He is Elend’s half brother, but his existence was kept secret. He considers himself a weapon. He thinks Vin’s senses are better than any Allomancer he has ever fought. A spy left him a message. I’m guessing that’s the kandra.
Well, so far my predictions aren’t very accurate (aside from Vin being badass, that’s always true). The Watcher isn’t Reen; Marsh hasn’t betrayed Sazed (yet). I’m sure everyone is laughing at me. I’m sure I’ll be laughing at myself once I finish the series and look back at these.
Zane meets with Straff. A servant girl had wanted to kill Straff, so Zane helped her poison his tea. Straff is able to smell the poison, so he has the girl executed, then drinks the tea anyway. He asks what the spy said. Zane says that the spy thinks he is suspected by the others, and he hasn’t found out anything about the atium.
After Zane leaves, Straff calls for a former mistress who is good with herbs. He had drank the poison just to show Zane he isn’t weak. He has her make a remedy to counteract the poison.
Straff is awful, especially when it comes to women. I kind of hope Zane gives in to the voice he hears when he’s around Straff one of these times. How did Elend turn out to be so decent with this thing for a father?
Chapter 19
On his way back to Luthadel, Sazed encounters an army of large blue humanoid creatures known as koloss. He spies on them from the distance at the top of a tree, but as he finishes, he realizes that some have entered the grove of trees where he is hiding. They surround him, and one tells him to come down. Weighing his options, he decides he probably won’t be able to escape, so he drops down out of the tree. Koloss are violent creatures, attacking and killing each other with little provocation. They lead Sazed through the army to a tent, which is guarded by humans.
Inside the tent is a man Sazed recognizes as a friend of Elend, Jastes Lekal. He calls himself king Lekal. He is headed to Luthadel, and he knows about the other armies, claiming he will give Elend a better deal than Cett or Straff will. Jastes wants Sazed to serve him, but Sazed is able to talk Jastes into letting him go.
As far as plot lines where people get captured go, this went rather smoothly. It didn’t last more than a chapter, and Sazed was able to talk his way out of it.
So we meet the orcs/trollocs of this story*: big, ugly, bloodthirsty brutes hellbent on destruction. A complaint I’ve seen about trollocs is that they started out being scary, but as the protagonists leveled up in power they turned into cannon fodder**. Will the koloss suffer the same fate, or will they stay dangerous throughout the books? My guess is Vin will wipe them out just by staring them down.
(*and I was doing so good about not referencing other series in this entry, just to blow it at the end.)
(**I’m not sure I agree with that complaint. Tarmon Gai’don got pretty hairy for the light side just by the sheer number of shadow spawn)
Until next time...

While the term “genre-defining” gets tossed around quite frequently these days in the music industry, and most especially the heavy metal industry, it is truly the only proper term to align with the head expanding sounds created by MESHUGGAH. The band began its formation in Umeå, Sweden in 1987. With over 25 years and 8 full length albums as masters in this realm, the band have been on an endless journey to outwardly reveal their uncommon sonic stamp. This greatly pertains to the musical precision required in order to create songs with such unique time signatures.
In 1989 the band‘s vestal voyage began with their self titled release that was limited to only 1,000 copies and completely sold out. In 1991 with the release of their first full length album "Contradictions Collapse" the band welcomed their new drummer, and the man that would eventually be dubbed “the best drummer alive;” the incredible Tomas Haake. Their 1995 album "Destroy, Erase, Improve", and the release of "Chaosphere" in 1998 gained massive attention and really pushed the band into the popular heavy metal touring circuit. Things progressed more and more until the release of their 2002 album which would go on to sell over 110,000 copies in the United States. As the years and albums progressed a term describing the band‘s progressive music style; “djent” emerged to solidify their genre defining nature. In 2005 they released "Catch Thirtythree" which perplexed and delighted many fans and critics as a 47 minute-long “uni-song” that genuinely required patience and attention to detail. A few years later in 2008, "obZen" made it‘s way into the world alongside a stunning music video for the single 'Bleed'. "obZen" sold over 82,000 copies in the US, alone. In 2012 the 10-track record "Koloss" was reveled and made its way to the top 20 of the Billboard top 200, re-demonstrating once again, the exclusive talents held only by MESHUGGAH.
In the time between "KOLOSS" and the release of their 8th full length studio album "The Violent Sleep of Reason", to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the band's debut studio album, the idea was born to let creative genius Keerych Luminokaya redesign each album cover with a new sense of style (Luminokaya began creating artwork for the band with their 2012 release of "KOLOSS", and has continued working closely with them by providing artwork for albums and tour/stage design). This project stretched over 6 months, and resulted in the release of the “25 Years of Musical Deviance” box set. Only 1000 copies were produced, and they sold out immediately. Inspired by the high demand from fans who couldn't get their hands on a copy of the box set the first time around, Nuclear Blast will now offer the albums individually on a variety of colored vinyl, in a one-time only limited pressing. Starting with the first 5 albums: "MESHUGGAH", "Contradictions Collapse", "None", "Destroy", Erase, Improve", and "Chaosphere", and set to be released on Nov 30th, 2018. All albums are now remastered especially for vinyl by Thomas Eberger of Stockholm Mastering.
In the wake of the massive 25 year milestone, there truly is no better way to complete the collections of fans worldwide than with the installation of these beautifully remastered albums. It‘s also a rarely seen opportunity for newer, younger fans who have yet to discover MESHUGGAH to introduce their ears and their minds to this stand-alone collection of timeless, mathematical auditory brilliance.

The Well of Ascension - Brandon Sanderson 5/5 stars
Jot-it-down-as-it happens commentary, wherein my soft-spot character becomes very clear.
-Me, not having even opened the book yet: Where’s Elend? Where is he? Is he here? -“El,” omg, hold me. -Straff Venture! Excellent. -Oh, is Elend Snapping or Ascending or something? (The thought of him dying is unacceptable) (Pls don’t pull a Kelsier on me) (Dammit, I should know better) -Oh my God, Elend is going to have a wonderful arc, isn’t he. -Not to be that person, but, damn, I love Kelsier and he isn’t even in this book. -A second kandra mystery!! Excellent. -Oh gosh, the writing style is much more alive and engaging, you go, king! -For the record, if by some chance Elend is the kandra, I’m gonna hurl this book away so fast. -Oh, hello, Zane, Elend’s brother, that’s why you looked familiar. Come to the good side, we have cookies and coins! No atium, tho, soz. -Reading what a koloss looks like, all I can say is - :O -Lekal! What! -Awww, Breeze soothing Elend, my heart. -“I think the more women you come to know, Your Majesty, the more you’ll find that statement applies to all of them.” BURN, EL! -Ah-lrianne? Oh-lrianne? Excuse me, I - *has a mini breakdown over name pronunciations* -BrEeZy! -Oh come, now Vin must dance with Elend at some point! -Vin not wanting to be kissed bc of her makeup, what a relatable queen. -Get you a man that loves like Elend loves Vin. However she is. -Omg, OreSeur is funny! -Philen! Don’t make fun of my boy! Nvm that I’m laughing, just stop! -I’m sorry, “Gneorndin”? How do I pronounce… How d… *cries* -It’s a given that Vin will go to the Well, but how, what will make her leave the city, and who will she go with? Argh, I’m so curious. -Ugh, Elend in his king clothes and Vin in her white gown, iconic, 10/10, power couple. -I love this discussion on whether a good man can become a good king. -E l e n d! Elend!! He attacc! -If Vin and El aren’t endgame, I’m throwing hands. -Oof, Sazed, yes, get them out of the city. I, too, shi-shi-shi-ship them like you do. -I love how the actions of characters affect other characters in introspective moments, how characters learn by other characters’ actions, how interconnected they are. -What a Vin way to get married. -Lol, Vin and El be honeymooning at the Well of Ascension. Of course. -I… Pls don’t let the crew die. That’s just… no. -Oh Clubs :(((( -No no, these aren’t tears, it's just just allergies… -Dockson?! :’( -Vin is so understatedly iconic. -Alendi, tho <3. Best character I never knew. -Oh no. Sazed?? Marsh??? Shazed???? -I, uh. Have questions about Zane. Didn’t he have a spike in him. -What do you mean the spirit slashed Elend’s gut, what do you mean, no! -HE HAS SNAPPED HASN’T HE -Yes, my babe, burn that pewter, my love, you’ve been working on that arc since the beginning, burn it away <3. -But who is the mist spirit. -Wait, so we have a power couple of an emperor and an empress who are both Mistborn?? That’s badass, man. -Omg, that’s amazing. Something changes the prophecies, this is ingenious. And Tindwyl was right all along, the information was contradictory! -So wait, is Zane’s God the nefarious evil? -The ending is so satisfying. -Welp. Perfect story is perfect. -I hope Breeze is doing well.
