It was a safety switch
So I'm actually obsessed with the idea that the "on" button Danny hit going into the portal wasn't actually an on button like one you get in a computer.
In basically any legally compliant workspace where I am (and I think in the western world broadly) you get these big red EMERGENCY STOP buttons that tend to be every few feet and on every machine so if something goes wrong people don't have to run far to make what ever's going wrong stop going wrong
Now to me that thing looks pretty much exactly like this thing
With a different layout, but the big red button is the subject of interest
Jack and Maddie seem to have cartoon consistency in their lab safety protocols, which checks out honestly given that's what they are, but It makes sense to me that they didn't so much put the ON button on the inside of the portal as that they flipped the power off to finish the final checks on the portal and then
Forgot About The Emergency Stop
(Incase people dont know, emergency stop buttons stop all the machinery it's attatched to. This can be anything from Only One Machine to literally an entire floor or building depending on the levels of "oh shit everything needs to stop RIGHT NOW." They're usually 'released' at a seperate point which can be anything from the keys in the panel above to a seperate button/keypad. Or, like the ones we had in our high school, the original red button that was pushed but you had to twist it to get it to pop back up. Kind of like a weird child lock)
So I'm proposing that the Fenton Parents, instead of being idiots in their planning and putting the on switch somewhere insane when they were drawing the schematics, actually built in a safety feature they forgot they tripped
Essentially, the Fenton parents were EXTRA safe in their lab and it half killed Danny

Here is a list of rules I have learned working in a lab and being in lab classes over the years. Most of them I or someone around me learned the hard way.
LAB RULES
1. Change your gloves
2. Do not eat any samples. Even if they are food.
3. LABEL! EVERYTHING!
4. Do not leave any liquids precariously over the edge of a counter
5. The heat glove cannot touch things that are 550 Celsius
6. Add acid to water, never water to acid
7. Always have a spare pair of jeans
#guess which one I learned today!#it was the jeans one#98% sulfruic acid will do a number on your jeans#but that’s why you wear jeans#so it doesn’t do a number on your skin#lab safety#environmental engineering#chemistry#chem lab#grad school#science#engineering#lab rules#wendy's posts

I love material safety data sheets for water.
MSDSs tend to have a fairly standardized language to describe safety considerations, which is really helpful in general because that succinctly communicates a lot of really important information, but when that language is applied to something like, well, water, some hilarious results occur.
Some examples under the cut.
ThermoFisher does not want you to drink its water. Honestly fair. Beyond the rabbit hole of chemical grades (some digging shows that this water is specifically LC-MS grade) drinking distilled water over a long period of time is not great for your health.
I feel like this mostly speaks for itself, honestly, and it is probably strictly better to have it there than not, but if a lab's first instinct is to let spilled water just sit there regardless of whether it was on the SDS or not there are probably a few more things worth worrying about.
Miscible with water? Big if true.
Good news everyone, water is not known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm.
Here's the Sigma-Aldrich water MSDS. In case you get their water into your eyes, on your skin, or into your stomach, they recommend dealing with it with more water.
Except for inhalation, which recommends fresh air. I think I heard somewhere that dealing with water inhalation with more water comes with some adverse health effects
I know I already showcased this with the ThermoFisher SDS, but this always gets me.
Well that ruins my weekend plans of mixing a kilogram of elemental sodium with water. Darn.
Big fan of comically high LD50s. For context sucrose's LD50 is less than a third of this.
Lastly I want to showcase this thing because a few things on there seem... off.
Well, at least it's not Danger.
When I first discovered this about one and a half years ago, I didn't really notice anything off (in fact most of the things on the page make sense) until I saw this. Maybe I'm missing out on some really exciting water chemistry but I don't think it should be extremely toxic, potentially explosive, and flammable under heating.
In fact other parts of the SDS seems to agree with me here.
I don't know why this is the case, but every time I have to deal with material safety stuff I always think about it and it's great every single time.

The Lab - the gift that keeps on giving.
I finally got some ✨new lab coats✨ for the lab. Took 3 months to get them because of course the ordering system was all fucked.
But I learned some... concerning... facts in the process.
We had no lab coats in the smallest size, and the majority were L, XL or bigger. Our lab is mostly petite women 🙃 So first problem: everyone were wearing way too large coats. Annoying at best, a risk for getting your sleeves contaminated and tipping stuff over at worst. Or so I thought.
Then in the process of ordering new ones I had to talk with the company that washes them. They register each coat and how often it's been sent to wash.
Y'all. Some of these coats hadn't been washed for 8 YEARS ☠️☠️☠️
In an organic synthesis lab.
Shiiiit, you might be more safe not putting it on at that point. Who knows how much it's contaminated with.
A side effect of not having the right sizes meant that people kept the few they could find hidden, and made sure not to lose it in the washing system.
+ Of course someone thought it would be fine to store some in random cupboards on top of samples??? WHY. Come on man.

Sorry for being inactive, CalTPA took over my March. Will start getting back into drawing. In the mean time, check out my first attempt in Analog Horror.
Been interested in the genre for a while and when I was assigned to make a lab safety video, I immediately thought of those SCP protocals and analog PSAs. I had fun with this and hopefully one of these days, it would be cool to combine analog with my drawings or find ways to incorporate analog video style in teaching/outreach. Analog horror aside, please follow these rules if you ever take any science courses.

I know it's impolite to splash a man with acid, but it's bad form to just leaves jars of acid around unattended. That's on you.

Somehow people assume that studying chemistry would sensitise you to the dangers different chemicals pose and how to avoid them. That is a lie. Four years in and all I know is I haven’t died yet and unless in immediately burns my skin I am very much not as scared of any substance as I should be.
