I know the unicursal (i.e., non-branching) labyrinth is a visual art thing and doesn't at all match the description of the mythological Labyrinth, but sometimes I picture some sort of ancient Greek SCP thing with very speedy stonemasons constantly lengthening the path in order to contain a very, very slow Minotaur.

Everything I know about labyrinths
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What labyrinths are
Labyrinths are the places witches and familiars hide in. They are hidden and can only be accessed through a doorway of sorts, which can sometimes be seen as a sigil or grief seed that's about to hatch. Witches sometimes bring their victims to their labyrinths in an attempt to eat them.

Astral labyrinths
Astral labyrinths can be accessed through sigils or by astral projecting right by the labyrinth's entrance. You can also bilocate in order to be in both an astral labyrinth and the physical realm at the same time. Theoretically, you could be fighting a witch and doing your homework at the same time, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea. It's best to focus when you are in a labyrinth so you don't get hurt.

Physical labyrinths
I am not a physical magi, so I don't know much about this. Physical labyrinths are in the physical realm, so they can be more physically dangerous, while astral labyrinths may be more mentally/spiritually dangerous. I would assume it's easier for civilians to get lost in these, especially if they have a witches Kiss. When dealing with a physical labyrinth, it is important to make sure everyone near is safe, and to check to make sure there's no one on the inside either. It would be very dangerous for any non magical hero.

Navigation
You may be wondering how you find these labyrinths in the first place. You can do so in a few slightly different ways. You could use your soul gem's glow. The brighter it glows, the closer you are. The way I use most is sort of a sixth sense. You know when a witch is near, and you can see the sigil in your mind's eye. With this sense, you can also tell which direction they are in and how strong they are and if they're a familiar. It's hard to explain it if you don't have that sense. Once you're in the labyrinth, you could get lost very easily. There tend to be long hallways or many rooms empty or filled only with familiars. There isn't any trick to finding your way that I know of yet. The best advice I can give to you is to look around and try and find places you haven't gone yet. They aren't (usually) mazes, so it shouldn't take an hour to find the witch or anything.

Theseus: So where is this thread. Ariadne: Oh, no, there isn't literally a thread. Theseus: Then how the heck are we going to-- Ariadne: It is not a maze...it's a labyrinth. There are no dead ends. Mazes have dead ends, labyrinths do not. Theseus: Oh.

So I'm enjoying the treasure hunt aspect of this season of Discovery, but one thing that bothers me: All of the clues keep testing the personal worthiness of the individual looking for them. The idea, of course, is that the technology not fall into "the wrong hands", but the problem with scientific discoveries is rarely that the discoverers themselves will misuse them; it's that society as a whole will misuse them. Case in point, no sooner did they find the coordinates of the Progenitor tech than they had them usurped by a Breen warlord. That's the kind of thing you just can't build tests for.

When I was a kid, there was this book I loved. A book that was also a game that was also a house. Each page represented a different, lavishly illustrated room in this house like a maze. The illustration, and sardonic, cordial but vaguely menacing, occasionally wistful asides from a mysterious narrator/guide in printed text, gave clues that you had to use to get to the next room/page (through one of the doors in the illustration). The goal was to get to the center and back out again unscathed, but there were other riddles you could solve if you wanted.
I spent hours with that thing. Eventually, I figured out-- or thought I figured out, there was no answer key in the back, and my perusal of this book was a very solitary activity-- the path through the house. But I never did solve most of the other mysteries. Not that that mattered: what mattered was the specific, special way the book made me feel. As an adult, I would say that it creeped me out a little. When I was eight or ten, I think I probably would have said that it bothered me so much I found it interesting and beautiful. There was a sense that something looked back at me from its pages.
Ideally, this book would have turned out to be some Candle Cove-esque phantom or figment. That would have felt suitable to the sensations it engendered in me as a child. But it turns out it's totally a real book, and its puzzles are well documented online-- though some still haven't been conclusively solved by anybody!
