The Pronunciation of স in Bangla
I wanted to talk about the pronunciations of স in Bangla. I feel like it is pretty straightforward as someone who's spent a lot of time with the language. All we really need to do is list the source of the vocabulary. That is to say, the pronunciation is defined by the etymology of the words.
So here are the strata of vocabulary we'll be dealing with: native words and borrowings. For borrowings, we'll consider Sanskrit, and then foreign loanwords. Foreign loanwords will include Persian-Arabic, Portuguese, and modern English.
First and foremost, let's just get it out of the way that s is pronounced "sh" in native vocabulary (seemingly, in my own experience) without exception. It's easier to just talk about the instances where it IS pronounced /s/.
The origin of S sounds in Bangla
Very brief, in OIA (Old Indo-Aryan), there were 3 s sounds, in Prakrits, they became basically 1 sound based on the Prakrit. Magadhi Prakrit gave East Indo Aryan languages, and it was pronounced “sh”. Sauraseni Prakrit gave Hindi and it is pronounced /s/ there.
All the s letters of OIA exist in Bangla and they are named according to their original pronunciation in Sanskrit:
তালব্য শ talɔbbɔ ʃɔ palatal s
মূর্ধণ্য ষ murdhɔnnɔ ʃɔ retroflex s
দন্ত্য স dɔnttɔ ʃɔ dental s
Sanskrit Borrowings
In Sanskrit borrowings, both শ and স can be pronounced /s/ in certain instances. Both are pronounced /s/ in certain consonant clusters. Examples are given below with Bangla script, classical Sanskrit reading, and modern Bangla pronunciation below:
শ্রাবণ śrāvaɳa /srabɔn/ - name of a month in Bengali calendar
অস্ত্র astra /ɔstrɔ/ - weapon
স্রোত srota /srot/ - stream, flow
বস্তু vastu /bɔstu/ - object
উপস্থিতি upasthiti /upɔstʰiti/ - presence
স্থির sthira /stʰir/ - still, firm
স্পর্শ sparśa /spɔrʃɔ/ - touch, physical sensation
সংশ্লেষণ saŋśleʂaɳa /ʃɔŋsleʃɔn/ - synthesis (very good example, we see /s/ in sl- cluster, but /ʃ/ in environments without clusters)
So in Sanskrit, we can see that the pronunciation as /s/ manifests in the clusters sr-, sl-, st-, sth-, but we need to differentiate word-initial sk-, sp-, from non-initial, because in non-initial, they are NOT pronounced /s/. However, we can see that st-, sth- are always pronounced /s/ in initial or non-initial position.
NOT sk, which is still /ʃk/. For example: পুরস্কার /purɔʃkar/ “award”.
Foreign loanwords
Farsi
In foreign loanwords, স was exclusively used to record words that were pronounced /s/ in the donor language, but that does not mean that same pronunciation exists in Bangla. We can compare Persian words with cognate borrowings into Hindi.
সাহেব ʃaheb, सहीब sahiib - sir, lord
মৌসুম mouʃum, मौसम mausam – season
We should talk about আসমান /asman/ "sky" as it seems to break a rule. Well firslty, this is not a word commonly in use, maybe it is relegated so some literature. Secondly, I do not think it breaks the rule "pronounced /s/ in consonant clusters", even though s and m are written separately and not in combination. I think this is only a problem with orthography (spelling), as when -m appears as the final member of a consonant cluster in Bangla, it is not pronounced as its own independent letter, it simply doubles the previous consonant. See: বিস্ময় has only been pronounced biʃʃoy all my life.
We should also talk about ফেরেশ্তা /fereʃta/ "angel". Like I claimed, "স was exclusively used to record words that were pronounced /s/ in the donor language", and in this word the Farsi original contains /ʃ/, so I do not think this breaks a rule. However, I have not talked to enough people with different dialects to hear if they always pronounce /s/ in consonant clusters like /st/.
Western European Borrowings
In Portuguese borrowings, the same rules for Farsi apply. The following examples also show the borrowings in Hindi because why not?
sabão -> সাবান /ʃaban/ soap; साबुन saabun
ananás -> আনারস /anarɔʃ/ pineapple; अनन्नास
esticar "stretch out clothes" -> ইস্ত্রি /istri/ "(clothes) iron" (notice the rules for consonant clusters mentioned in Sanskrit borrowings); इस्त्री istrii
There is only one French borrowing in use in Bangla: রেস্তরাঁ /restɔrã/ “restaurant”.
Here is a Dutch borrowing: ইস্কাপন /iskapɔn/ spade (playing cards). Dutch has only contributed to Bangla the names of playing cards as far as I know. No other words are in common use.
English Borrowings
Now here comes the hardest part. Like what was previously stated, স is used to denote ‘s’ from the donor language but in this case, unlike Persian, or even Portuguese, modern English loans are meant to be pronounced as /s/, but the variation in pronunciation reflects things such as social class, and socioeconomic background, and etc.
The reason this is a bit hard is because English loanwords are being constantly borrowed and used by people because of globalization, bilingualism, and such so we can actively observe the factors that go into pronunciation. The issue is this brings up an important question: If Farsi borrowings shifted s > sh, when English globalization ends, will the same happen to English loanwords? The /s/ sound still exists in Bangla even after the s > sh sound shift, because there is another letter in Bangla that has shifted pronunciation to /s/. চ, ছ have shifted from ch/ chh > /s/ in some dialects and sociolects/ registers (versions of language used in different socio-economic classes) (dialect means difference based on geography, sociolects are usually based on wealth). So words in English with /s/ get pronounced between s/sh/ch depending on who you’re talking to.
Previously it was mentioned: There is only one French borrowing in use in Bangla: রেস্তরাঁ /restɔrã/ “restaurant”. And it is getting replaced by the English loanword: রেস্টরেন্ট /resʈɔrenʈ/.

i know this is futile considering i have what 3 ish months tills finals but let a girl dream abt her dream ib subects
english a language & literature hl (no change here)
japanese a language & literature sl (would choose academic suicide over a easy 7)
psychology hl but with our previous teacher (not my first choice but our current teacher is inadequate and we basically have chatgpt as our teacher)
environmental systems and societies sl (idgaf if it's the easiest science. this girl at age 10 did a pyp exhibition abt climate change. let a girl continue her 5th grade passion and let her pass)
math application & analysis sl (because i actually really like stats but realized 1.5 years too late)
theatre hl (only picked music bc we don't have space for theatre)
ee: still english language & literature about tangled but maybe this time give me another teacher that is allowed to respond during the summer???
cas: just start sharing hope foundation club at the beginning of g11 instead of g12 so i have more time

in tok our teacher had a question that said what is the common language of the natural sciences which was mathematics but next to it was Esperanto
I though it was funny cause I read it as espresso and yk I was like “that’s that me Esperanto”
now that I looked it up I think as a girl who takes English language and literature HL AS WELL AS Japanese language and literature SL (aka impossible to get more than a 5 in the IO), Esperanto is such a funny language. Like English is notorious for its exception, Japanese have ひらがな、カタカナ、漢字(rip me) which mean it’s almost one of the hardest languages to learn and then Esperanto is supposed to be easy???
At this point imma join all my friends being tortured by Duolingo and start learning Esperanto for shits and giggles

Unveiling the IBDP Curriculum: A Comprehensive Guide to Subjects
In recent years, students aged between sixteen and nineteen years have participated in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP).
Most of the educational programs around the world are highly acclaimed by students all over the world. For it aims at developing skills such as critical thinking, appreciation, and warmth towards other cultures, and global citizenship among the students.

2. Language Acquisition: This group focuses on the learning of a new language or enhancing their skills in a language that they know. This, however, focuses much on the ability to communicate and understand other cultures.
3. Individuals and Societies: This subject group comprises social sciences such as History, Geography, Economics, and Psychology among other subjects. It seeks to encourage the students in the study of human activities as well as the social systems in existence.
4. Sciences: The students can study subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Environmental Systems and Societies. This group encourages students to develop skills in scientific inquiry and engage in practical work.
5. Mathematics: The mathematics group has a variety of courses that meet the various levels of students thanks to their interests. Students will have to choose Mathematics: analysis and Approaches or Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation.
6. Arts: Such subjects form part of this category include, but they are not limited to Visual Arts, Music, Theatre, or Film. It enables the student not only to be creative but also learn how to be artistic.
In all the groups mentioned above, students will have to sit for 3 subjects at a higher level (HL) and 3 at a standard level (SL). Higher Level courses entail more elaborate coverage as well as 240 hours of teaching while lower Level comprises 150 hours of teaching.
This enables the students to focus on what intrigues them while still having to cover the other necessary subjects.
