I've literally had this stuck in my head for as long as I've been obsessed with him but imagine being highschool sweethearts with him...

Like you guys were inseparable when you were kids. Your houses were right across the street from each other and you were the only kids on the block so you always played together. You would ride your bikes through the streets, go to the arcade, play in a nearby creek. When you two got older your spot by the creek became a place to escape from family issues, you'd pass a joint and a beer back and forth, and just talk about your futures. Then when Senior prom came around his brother and your mom forced you two to go together even though neither of you wanted to go to prom in the first place. Half way through the night you'd ditch and go to your spot in the woods. You'd both be a giggling mess, drunk on spiked punch as you fall to the ground together, him holding you in his arms, making fun of your poofy dress once more. But secretly he loved it, his heart had been racing all night, his hands sweaty every time you'd smile at him. Now that you were on top of him, giggling away, he kissed you. He didn't know what overcame him but he did it anyway. You kissed back. Neither of you had felt this way about each other before, but now that it happened a whole new world of feeling opened up. All those years together, all of those memories, became something more in one moment.

You two continued to grow together, supporting each other through everything with a tight hold on each other's hands. James band blew up, just like you always told him, and he drug you along on tours and to crazy parties. You two would sneak off and make out in corners and in bathrooms, not caring what other people think. In '86 on a hiking trip, he got down on his knee and pulled a ring out, asking you to marry him. Of course you said yes, leaping into his arms and kissing him. You'd get married in 1990, 10 years after you started dating, it would be a small wedding, only your closest friends and family. He performs a song at the wedding for you that he had written, Nothing Else Matters...and it really didn't. Not to him anyway, he could have lost it all, the band, the fame, the money, he could have been living on the streets, but as long as he had you, he still had everything.

Mid 1991 you tell him you're pregnant, you both freak out at first but then realize how beautiful the opportunity is. Both of you came from broken families so the idea of starting a family together, one that would be full of love and laughter, neither of you could pass it up. Ironically enough the baby was born at the beginning of '92, February 10th. What would have been Cliffs 30th birthday. It only seemed right to name your baby boy after him.

A few years later another baby boy follows, Layne. It was a difficult pregnancy which ended in a C-section so you two agree to stop at two. But of course, the desire to have a baby girl outweighed your fears so in 1999 little Julia followed.

James had been struggling with his alcohol addiction, you tried so hard throughout the years to keep him from falling deeper but it couldn't be stopped. It pained you to see him this way, to watch him drink himself half to death. Many nights he'd stagger through the door and pass out on the floor.

Your breaking point was when he hadn't made it inside. He was passed out in the lawn in a pile of his own vomit. He needed rehab, no matter how much he denied it.

The months following were rough for everyone, James, you, the kids, but you pushed through and when he came home it was perfect. He was sweeter than ever, his smile from his youth, the one you fell so hard for, was back on his face.

The years that followed his sobriety journey were sometimes hard but you two made it work, just like you always had. In 2007 you found out that you were pregnant again. Both of you panicked for a while, wondering how you would make another baby work after already having three. Especially since they were getting older now...and so were the two of you. But Stevie was another perfect little angel who was adored by everyone. Her big brother Cliff especially. He was a sweet, sensitive boy who often took care of her without even asking. James and you told him he didn't have to help but he didn't listen.

Everything was perfect as the years continued on, Cliff got married and him and his wife welcomed their first baby in 2017. You and James were ecstatic about the news and the fact that you were grandparents now. It was only then did you realize that all of your dreams had come true, you and James were growing old together just like you always talked about in the spot by the creek. Sometime between 2017 and now, Layne and Julia both got married along the way too. Cliff welcomed two more kids, Layne welcomed his first, another on the way. Julia and her wife were opening a bookstore in Vail together. Stevie was about to graduate high school which seemed unreal.

Now you were here in the kitchen, preparing a Sunday dinner for your whole family, your 4 kids, 3 bonus kids (their wives), and your 4 grandchildren. James had arrived home from the store after you sent him for an ingredient you had forgotten. He stepped into the kitchen with a grin plastered on his face and his hand behind his back.

"what?" You'd say, eyeing him suspiciously as he stepped closer to you. Hed brushed your graying hair out of your face and bring a small flower out from behind his back, placing it on your ear.

"I saw it on the drive home, thought you'd like it," Hed say softly, a boyish smile on his face. You'd smile back, feeling a faint blush on your cheeks. Somehow after all these years he still found ways to whoo you. He'd wrap his arms around you and smile once more before leaning down to press a kiss against your lips. The kiss would be interrupted by the squeals of a few of your grandkids running into the kitchen, wanting attention from him, wanting their grandpa. You'd smile at the sight of him scooping one into each arm, moving to the living room to play with them as you finish up dinner, your heart filled with more love than you ever thought possible.

Luckily, VoicePlay proves that arriving at a designated number of years doesn't mean you have to give up having fun with your friends. These big kids make life's little bothers sound very good.

Trivia:

This video was filmed at Wall Crawl Studio in Orlando, which is also frequently used by their friends in Vocatve.

The YouTube description includes a reminder for U.S. fans: "don't forget to do your taxes!", which happens to be relevant again at the time of posting. (Ugh.)

This was Deejay's first appearance in a VoicePlay video, made possible by the Hamilton tour being on pandemic hiatus, but they'd known each other for many years. When Deejay was a member of Echo, they had served as VoicePlay's backups during their three holiday season residencies in Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party at Disney World.

J.None and Deejay had also been friends for a while before either officially worked with VP. They initially met through mutual friends who knew they had a lot in common. They were then castmates in the "Beetlejuice Mashup" show at Universal Studios, and in American Music Machine at Disney World. J was a featured guest at Deejay's acoustic show in June 2015 (as was Deejay's longtime pal Cesar De La Rosa).

Everyone is wearing a leopard print item — Eli's glasses frames, Deejay's scarf, J.None's shirt, Geoff's watch band, and Layne's belt (which you can't actually see, but was confirmed on Patreon). Not to mention the throw pillows on the couch and the rug beneath it, and the wallpaper in Deejay's solo space.

The base of the percussion in AJR's original recording was created by sampling the knock from the boys' apartment door and altering the pitch. The prompting voice is Charlie Pellett, one of the announcers from the New York City subway system, who the brothers heard growing up.

The voiceplay_randomness Instagram account created a video that speeds up a tiny bit everytime someone sings the titular word. It gets so fast by the end.

A Japanese fan drew some very cool fanart that remixed the guys and the location's vibrant decor to create a 90s-anime-style splash image.

VoicePlay 2024 Recap

It's time for a recap of everything that VoicePlay has been up to over this year!

If you somehow missed my recap post for Geoff's channel, you can find it HERE. This post will overall have the same format/structure, but of course I have more videos to talk about, so I'll try not to talk too much. I'll link relevant posts of mine just like in my Geoff recap, but I won't link any of the VoicePlay Visuals - just go to my masterpost here!

Okay, first let's give some love to the Minis! VP released 21 Minis to YouTube and other social media platforms this year, (though by the time the year is fully done, it may be 22 or 23, shhh), so I'm not gonna list them all, but some of my favourites were The Last Shanty (absolute earworm!), Pure Imagination (on my sleep playlist), Baby On Board (very cute and also catchy!), and Jump In The Line/Shake Senora (a bop, a banger, and super fun!). And we got cooking challenges too! (And you didn't hear this from me, but you might be getting a new one sooner or later - early January at latest).

Now time for video summaries! (Or my attempt at "summaries" at least, lol)

The Lion Sleeps Tonight - released January 19th

So when the video premiere schedule thing for this dropped on YouTube, I gotta say that I honestly wasn't sure what to expect! I guess you could say that I was still "settling into the Rabbit Hole", still working my way down, and so I was almost maybe a little uncertain about this song? Like I knew it wouldn't be bad, but I was like "eh well the original is fairly simple in composition and I don't really know what VoicePlay are gonna do with it", but anyway, Never Doubt VoicePlay Ever, because I really really enjoyed this! It's a warm hug in musical form, while also being a really fun/silly video, and it's the first of VP's 2024 stuff to hit a million views!

Favourite music moment: Getting to hear Layne on lead vocals, followed by a little bit of Geoff on lead, followed by that cool backing vocals "stack" of "tonight- tonight- tonight!" MAN it's so good!

Favourite visual moment: The appearance of Violayne! Totally took me by surprise the first time but it was totally delightful, and Layne looked so happy and pleased when playing his violin! <3

Sleeping In The Cold Below - released February 16th

Just like with Geoff's channel, I was keeping mental notes over this year about what VoicePlay release was my favourite of 2024, and just like with Geoff's solo stuff, it was VP's second release this year that easily jumped to First Place in my mind and stayed there for a good while!

Seriously I was not prepared for how freaking incredible this music video is! Every part of it! I've never heard the original song before, but I absolutely adore this cover (and so did the Warframe devs/creators themselves, apparently, but more on that further down). Also I ended up doing fanart of Geoff from this video (he looked hella good in this video let's be real), which you can find HERE!

Favourite music moment: That ending!!! The way Geoff descends on his "we're all bound down to the deep and we'll all be sleeping in the cold below" line while Eli, Omar, and Cesar take off into the rafters??? (Contrary motion is the proper technical term, apparently). Utter perfection! A shot of adrenaline right to the veins!

Favourite visual moment: The ending shot of them all back in the mask things and motionless is of course quite cool, but I also love the opening shots of each of them removing the face mask armour(?) things one-by-one (like the shot of Layne removing his as he stares right down the camera with those violet contacts while beatboxing? Dang!)

Black Hole Sun - released April 19th

From one kinda futuristic cyberpunk video to another!

I don't really have a ton to say about the video, but that's fine, this is gonna be a long post anyway - might as well embrace any chance to make it a little shorter!

Favourite music moment: Geoff casually dropping in a C#1 subharmonic like it's nothing on "wash away the R A I N N N N N" (also Layne doing snake sounds after the line "sometimes far too long for snakes")

Favourite visual moment: Not really a "moment", but respect to the set design! It's pretty cool how the set looks like they're singing on top of like an apartment building or something! (That short 'brick' wall (not real bricks) behind them was actually made by Eli, with the help of his wife and some other person whose name I don't recognize in the description)

Classical Chaos - released June 28th

This was the first video I got early access to after joining VoicePlay's Patreon! It had released there just a couple or so days before I joined, but for whatever reason it would be more or less a whole four weeks before this video hit YouTube!

Not only did this video make me go and finally watch VoicePlay's "In The Hall Of The Mountain King" video, but then this ended up being unexpectedly amazing? Like my brain was able to look past the initial "weirdness" of the costumes and really enjoy it! And in fact for this video I did a "running commentary" on my first watch, where I paused to type up thoughts as I went, and you can find the post for it HERE! Additionally, I ended up making a comparison post between the "Grundel" characters in Mountain King vs how they appear in Classical Chaos, which you can look at HERE.

Favourite music moment: The return of "In The Hall Of The Mountain King" but with that random syllabic chanting behind it, was honestly pretty epic. Also that kinda "EDM/club remix" of Fur Elise was fire ngl.

Favourite visual moment: All of it? The can-can bit, Geoff's eyeroll during the romance bit, the cool fire effects, that skull thing? Yeah there's a reason why I needed to split my VoicePlay Visuals into 2 posts for this!

The Way You Make Me Feel - released July 19th

To make up for the super long wait for Classical Chaos, this video released only three weeks later, instead of the average four!

Not a lot to say on this one - I feel like I don't know enough music theory to give it the full appreciation it deserves, but I know a lot of more music-knowledgeable people really loved it, and in fact it's become VoicePlay's second video of 2024 to hit a million views!

Favourite music moment: When the song is slowly building and then we get the vocal percussion and the song really kicks into gear for the final section. Love it!

Favourite visual moment: Layne and Cesar looking over at each other during their two-part harmony bit. It's cute!

Total Eclipse Of The Heart - released August 16th

Honestly this is an underrated VoicePlay song imo - released four months ago and hasn't even quite reached 200k views as I'm typing this? (EDIT: it is at 200k now as of the 19th, finally!) Bruh it's a well-known song! Was the algorithm just not on their side for this one?

I think I've gotten a little more "confident" with doing music thoughts/commentary posts, because had this released more recently, or last month or whatever, I probably would have made a post with at least a few notes on cool stuff I liked in the arrangement! And I'm kinda sad that I didn't do it for this one!

Favourite music moment: Does the entire Spanish section count? It's either that or the chorus right afterwards where the vocal percussion kicks in (like in TWYMMF kinda) and when Ashley starts going off with the vocals!

Favourite visual moment: The whole "B-roll footage" part of the video with Cesar and Ashley portraying a couple (each having memory flashbacks?) was a cool addition! Something a little bit novel that definitely worked! (Also I really do love the styling/'costuming' in this one)

Be Prepared - released September 27th

This dropped to Patreon at roughly 11:45PM for me on a Saturday night. I was actually in the middle of watching some YouTube video, and I just happened to check Discord (ADHD be like-), and saw someone had just posted about the Patreon notification and I was like hang on WHAT?

Honestly it took me a red hot minute to force myself to make it past even the first ten seconds of this video, like ohhhh my god. VoicePlay doing "Be Prepared", one of the best Disney Villain songs ever, with Geoff as Scar, having most of the vocals, with hair on point, that awesome jacket, and eyeliner?!!?!! I literally cannot be normal about this video (and yeah Sleeping In The Cold Below was my favourite of 2024, until this came along and overtook it without a second glance).

Favourite music moment: The mid-song dialogue part that got turned into a kind of rhythmic "rap" thing was utterly brilliant! Also every single thing that Geoff does in this video, obviously. <3

Favourite visual moment: Don't! Make! Me! Choose! I'm just gonna say I love all the stuff that got replicated from the original scene - the replication of "the lights are not all on upstairs", the thumb/digit across the neck for "take Certain Duties on board", the lighting changing at the same moments as in the original scene and being the same colours as well, it's all perfect!

Thriller - released October 11th

In terms of classic/iconic Halloween songs, VoicePlay have more or less done them all, and so of course they had to get around to doing this song sooner or later! In fact I had the idea myself earlier in the year (like May or June even?), and so did a lot of the other Patrons, as it turned out.

This is only sitting on 370K views as I type this (it deserves way more!) but this was a HIT with reactors! The VP Patreon Discord server has a thread for sharing reaction video links and I swear this video got so many people doing reactions for it! I won't say too much about my own thoughts, because you can read my thoughts/commentary on the song cover itself HERE, and you can go find my 2-part Voiceplay Visuals (again!) for this video via my Masterpost link at the top of this post! Oh and also I shared this picture of Geoff in the video as its own post and people really seemed to like it, so I might as well put that link here as well.

Favourite music moment: I mean like the arrangement is freaking amazing and everyone brought their A-game with the vocals, but like c'mon, I had one main hope for this cover, and they delivered! Geoff doing Vincent Price's spooky monologue is everything I wished for and more, and I love it.

Favourite visual moment: Again, this is a case where it's really hard to choose, but I think I'm just gonna have to hand the whole dang award to Geoff. The shot of him rising up (almost vampire-like) after the first transformation part, the shoulder movements during the monologue, the way he never blinks once after getting zombified, like he absolutely crushed it! Came, ate, left no crumbs!

Stand By Me - released November 15th

This one was filmed around the same time as Be Prepared was (like I think the following day or the day after that?), and honestly given the two super amazing full-production music videos we got for the previous two months, VoicePlay more than deserved to have their next video be a bit more "simple" and relaxed! Plus it's a gorgeous arrangement, with gorgeous vocals, and it deserves more views! (Seriously the portrait video format didn't seem to affect The Lion Sleeps Tonight in terms of getting noticed!) You can find my thoughts/commentary post about it HERE!

Favourite music moment: I mean Layne's lead vocal line was of course absolutely lovely (and followed by Geoff getting lead vocals no less!) but I did also enjoy Mykal's 'ad-libs' of "you don't have to do it alone, you don't have to stand up on your own!"

Favourite visual moment: Cesar smiling down at Mykal and Eli and then smiling up at Geoff and Layne during his main lead part early in the song <3

Zat You Santa Claus? - released December 6th

This is a song that I would've been totally unfamiliar with had I not gone and listened to all of VoicePlay's 2012 Peppermint Winter album like a week or two before this dropped to Patreon! And even then I wasn't really sure what to expect from this, because obviously the lineup is a little different here to what it was 12 years ago, and the arrangement of this is different to the album version as well! But I really loved this, it's so jazzy, and in case you missed my thoughts/commentary post about it, then you can find it HERE.

I also ended up making a post comparing the lyrics of VoicePlay's version to the lyrics of the original, which you can find HERE, and although I didn't make a proper Voiceplay Visuals for this one, I still ended up doing a mini "screenshot compilation", which you can find HERE.

Favourite music moment: Layne's lead vocal part was obviously very cool, but so was J's scatting, and the harmonies were great - it's just a fun awesome arrangement!

Favourite visual moment: The build-up on "he's coming to get yaaa...." with the quick switches of everyone leaning in "spookily" towards whoever was sitting in the middle was great, as well as J handing off the gift to Cesar (who accepted it delightedly and then used it like a shaker instrument), while Geoff and Eli were definitely looking uncertain/sus about it.

Party Of Your Lifetime - released December 13th

Man I did not see this one coming, but I certainly ain't complaining about it!

Yeah so the Warframe creators liked VoicePlay's cover of Sleeping In The Cold Below so much that they asked to do an official collaboration thing with the group, and the result is this freaking awesome video and freaking awesome song cover! Seriously between the makeup and costuming, and the dancing, and the whole 90s boy band energy (but with a sci fi twist!) it's honestly just a great time, as I knew it would be! (And if you haven't seen my thoughts on the vocals/music/song arrangement, go HERE!)

Favourite music moment: I mean imo it has to be the "join us embrace us, don't ever erase us" breakdown section, like the way it slowly builds, just starting with Geoff and then having Cesar come in, and then Eli and Layne and stuff, like it's just very cool (but I also enjoy the key change for the final chorus!)

Favourite visual moment: The whole video is great, and the dancing and jumping around looked very fun, but honestly I think I'm gonna have to also hand this one to the "join us embrace us..." section. Like maybe I'm suffering from a bit of recency bias and I might have a different answer if you were to ask me in like a month, but everything about that part was just *chefs kiss*

So yeah, there's my VoicePlay recap for 2024!

I know this post is already quite long, but if you'll just allow me to talk a little more, I just want to say thank you. When I started this blog in late January, I wasn't sure if there were any VoicePlay fans much active on Tumblr at all (or at least anymore). I got used to it - this blog was made for my own entertainment, not for trying to become popular or anything - but y'all came, and y'all found me! (Or maybe I found you!)

I was looking at one of my older mini comparison posts I did, between High And Dry and Wicked Game, and it currently has zero notes on it (as of me typing this). But if I were to post it now? I know it'd at least get a few likes, and maybe even a comment, and/or a reblog or two! Heck, I can post a 'random' picture of Geoff now and have it get 18 likes! And I take not a single one for granted!

I remember and recognize many of your usernames, and even if I have never talked to you or interacted with you or followed you, I still see you! If you have ever liked or reblogged or commented on any of my posts, I appreciate you so much! (But also to my beloved mutuals: I love you a whole lot, you know who you are <3). Thank you for making my fan creator experience extra fun and enjoyable, and see you all in 2025!

(But also see some of you tomorrow for more fic posting!)

beauty by bri lee - non-fiction / memoir about the authors experience with anorexia and bulimia and how this ties into the wider theme of beauty. examining what beauty really is and means. I admire this authors honesty and think she is a talented writer but I don't think she successfully navigated the theme or that this work was particularly illuminating on this topic. didn't rate.

salt, sat, acid, heat by samin nosrat - foundational cook book / cooking theory text positing that all food can be understood through the four cooking elements of salt, fat, acid and heat. I cook a lot so I found a lot of the information to be things I already knew instinctually although I enjoyed that through this book I got to learn the "why" behind these things. probably more aimed at people who don't cook as much as I do but still had interesting sections. didn't rate.

sunrise on the reaping, suzanne collins - enjoyed this foray back into the hunger games world. her writing is a bit mid now that I'm older but ultimately nostalgia won me over. I loved following haymitch and some of the expansions to the lore. ★★★★

kitchen confidential, anthony bourdain - my dad is a fine dining chef so this book was SO funny to me as someone whose definitely seen That Life. This is narrated by Bourdain and I found his narration charming. I felt super immersed in this and I'm glad I finally read it. didn't rate

Brad Pitt is stepping onto the racetrack in the new trailer for “F1,” the upcoming Formula One racing film. And from the looks of the teaser, which you can check out above, this one is going to be an adrenaline-fueled spectacle you won’t want to miss.

F1 is scheduled to be cinematically released by Warner Bros. Pictures on 25th June 2025, in the UK and internationally, in the United States and Canada on 27th June 2025, four and two days before the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix respectively.

Joseph Kosinski, who directed Tom Cruise in the high-flying “Top Gun: Maverick,” helmed the film alongside producers Jerry Bruckheimer, Chad Oman, Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner and Formula One racer Lewis Hamilton. It was filmed in real-time during grands prix around the world in 2023 and 2024 and was made in collaboration with Formula 1 and the FIA.

2020 VoicePlay winter activities — prelude to uncertainty

After they'd wound down the previous year in style, VoicePlay eased into the new year gently, taking their time to plan out a good balance of travel for live shows, music video productions, individual projects, and personal time. But the old adage about the best laid plans was waiting in the wings, ready to upend those plans and test their creativity in new ways.

Make some noise

The guys spent the first week of the year relaxing, spending time with family, and working on smaller projects. Geoff recorded a two-part bass singing Q&A that stemmed from his original tutorial video.

J.None met up with other members of the Joyful Noise Choir for a corporate event at a local hotel.

Continuing his quest for social media domination, J also set up a TikTok account. His first post is a bit of silly fun, playing around with a voice modulator and expressing his devotion to Taco Bell.

Northward bound

Although they didn't document it on social media as overtly as they had in previous years, the guys do seem to have started their travels together in January with a trip to New York City for the Association of Performing Arts Professionals annual conference. The best evidence is two photos on Instagram.

Layne teased J.None with a carrot-tastic screenshot from a restaurant's menu a few days before the conference, and noted in a comment reply that it was in NYC.

J then struck a pose in his show duds, with the location tagged as Times Square. He didn't post it until mid-February, but a conversation in the comments clarified that it was taken "last month", which also lines up with the timing of APAP.

Do you love me?

After the boys got home from NYC, Layne headed to the PattyCake studio to finish up their next project, exploring the possibilities of the men of Disney animated movies using dating apps, set to a playful cover of "10,000 Hours" by Dan + Shay and Justin Bieber.

Out and about

When the weekend rolled around, J.None popped over to the Gulf Coast and continued his streak of road races with another 5K at Howard Park in Tarpon Springs.

Away we go

The next day, VoicePlay headed north again for their first concert of the year in Maryland, where local a cappella group The Trills opened for them, and some longtime fans had a chance to meet in person.

Over the weekend, J.None took part in yet another 5K at nearby Lake Louisa State Park, and achieved a new personal best time.

The next week, he flew home to Virginia for a visit with family and friends, and to perform at a local bar.

Talk to me

VoicePlay eased into February with the latest installment of their not-so-secret patron podcast, in which Geoff and J hung out and answered questions.

While he was speaking into a microphone, Geoff also recorded himself reading another short story, "An Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge" by Ambrose Bierce. The narration is surreal and unsettling, set in Alabama during the U.S. Civil War, told from the perspective of a dying wealthy Confederate, and was originally published during Reconstruction.

For the love

On the day before Valentine's Day, VoicePlay slipped into some comfy, cuddle-worthy outfits and headed to a local venue to film their first music video of the year. The way they crooned their supremely harmonious rendition of Elvis Presley's "Can't Help Falling In Love" is like an audible hug.

J spent the rest of the weekend with the Paradigm gang. First they rocked out at an open-air show in Lake Nona, then they celebrated enduring love at a lavish wedding reception.

All together now

A couple days later, Geoff, Eli, and J.None headed to their old friend Michael Andrew's studio to record some vocals together, presumably for their upcoming "Warriors" music video.

The weekend brought more Paradigm fun for J, as the band trundled over to Tampa for a pirate group's annual Coronation Ball.

Meanwhile, Layne was working away in the studio, putting the finishing touches on the penultimate episode of The Villains Lair's first season, complete with a certain vindictive lion.

Camaraderie and care

That evening, J.None scooted out to Longwood for another showcase show at Jaica Creative Studios. It was hosted by Amanda Jay, who he'd collaborated with the previous summer.

Back on the home front, Layne was on dad duty. His littlest girl Doris took a spill off her scooter that left her with scrapes and bruises on her face the day before school pictures. So once the boo-boos were tended to and tears were dried, he put his years of accumulated special effects makeup skills to use and marked up his own face to match in solidarity.

Ups and downs

On the first Friday in March, VoicePlay started their next round of travel and live performances. Their first stop was just outside Indianapolis, where they had a rousingly good time.

Then they had one day at home before they hopped on their first — and, as it turned out, last — voyage of the year.

.

The cruise that wouldn't end

VoicePlay has performed on many cruise ships over the years. Other than a 6-month contract in their early 4:2:Five days, most of their stints have ranged from a few days to a week. When they boarded the Disney Wonder in early March of 2020, they expected to disembark just two days later and fly back home as usual.

Unfortunately for them, they were at sea when the Western Hemisphere started to take the pandemic seriously and went into lockdown. Ports closed before them in Colombia and Mexico, preventing any passengers from leaving the ship. What was supposed to be a four-day trip ended up taking twelve. They were finally able to disembark at the end of the full journey in San Diego. And, boy howdy, were they relieved.

Layne — maintaining his aversion to oceanic travel — had been comparatively safe at home, working on a new video project with Thomas Sanders and the PattyCake gang. He was happy to welcome his bandmates home at long last.

Layne also finished up VoicePlay's "Warriors" music video, which they'd filmed before the others had set sail, and released it the day after they finally arrived back in the Sunshine State.

The new abnormal

Like the rest of the world, VoicePlay and their extended network of collaborators had to make some big adjustments to their work and home lives during the early days of the pandemic. All of the concerts they had scheduled for the coming months were cancelled. Music videos already in the planning stages were completely reimagined or postponed indefinitely, and new content was formulated to take their place.

The parents among them needed to work around their kids' agendas even more than usual. As so many people do when faced with significant life changes beyond their control, Earl gave in to the urge to change his hair. (He also started a TikTok account, though he hasn't posted much since.)

This is how we do it

Knowing that many of their fans are young and might more readily take advice from their favorite baddie, PattyCake worked with their resident Evil Queen to issue a proclamation regarding safety measures folks should take during the pandemic.

Since his bass singing Q&A videos had gone well, and commenters had additional questions about other aspects of music production, Geoff put together a fun overview of his a cappella arrangement methods with some cameos from Kathy, Eli, and his kitty friend.

.

The end, for now

PattyCake finished the month by releasing the season finale of The Villains Lair. Due to the challenges of coordinating the schedules of such a large cast, they had actually started filming it the previous summer.

Knowing how the first part of the story was going to end so far in advance meant that Layne and Tony already had plans for the second season in progress, but they cautioned that the reality of safety restrictions made their future filming schedule a bit unknowable for the time being.

The ensuing months and years would continue to bring big changes for VoicePlay and those in their circles. Some have been sad, some have been joyous, and others have provided new opportunities for growth, both personally and professionally. But all of that will be chronicled in its own time.

Voiceplay Visuals: We Don't Talk About Bruno

("You're gonna show/talk about That Moment, right?" Yes of course I will be showing/talking about That Moment; who do you take me for? 😝)

This video was uploaded on the 26th of February, 2022, it features Ashley Diane (in her second full-length collaboration with Voiceplay), and it is of course a cover of the ridiculously-popular song We Don't Talk About Bruno, from the very-popular Disney movie Encanto (which I have seen 2 or 3 times, including in cinemas, but I'm also very familiar with the movie soundtrack, because it's amazing). To cover such a popular song (let alone acapella-style) can be a challenging task, because obviously there'll be a lot of people who'll already know the original song quite well and who will be prepared to make comparisons, but this is Voiceplay we're talking about! They're not called "the theatre kids of acapella" for nothing, and Disney covers is one of the things they do best (and the video currently sits at a very impressive 5.6 million views on Youtube! (EDIT: as of the 13th of March, it's now 5.7 million!))

So of course I have a lot to talk about with this one, so let's get into it!

Layne was in charge of the video, arrangement, and direction for this one, and he and Tony worked together on set design and costuming. Needless to say, Layne and Tony did an amazing job (and yes, this was of course filmed at Pattycake Productions Studio, which Layne and Tony own and run together)

As for the costuming/characters: Cesar is playing Felix (is it perfect casting, or is Cesar just amazing at slipping into basically any role he's given? You decide), Ashley plays triple roles of Pepa, Isabela, and Mirabel, Eli is maybe Agustin (Agustin doesn't have a lead singing part in the song but the outfit is close enough), Layne is Dolores, and Geoff is either Camilo, Bruno, or both (Camilo pretending to be Bruno perhaps, like in the original scene in the movie?)

If we don't count Jingle Bell Rock (where Eli was wearing glasses while dressed as "Sandy Claws", then I'm fairly certain this is the last/most recent time that Eli has actually worn glasses for a Voiceplay video? And perhaps the only time he's worn them since growing out his facial hair.

Also I'm pretty sure I heard from someone that Geoff's "ruana" (google it) is in fact just a regular blanket/piece of fabric draped (possibly secured/pinned) over his shoulders (it's kind of a Look though ngl)

Not even 30 seconds in and I already stumbled upon a way-funnier-than-expected screencap 🤣

Basically, Cesar 100% understood the assignment as Felix, totally hammed it up, and it's highly entertaining 😁

(Also I swear Geoff did a very miniscule eyeroll here? Amazing, love him)

I know I'm not meant to be talking about vocals in these posts (per my own rules), but I have to give a big shoutout to Layne, who freaking killed it with Dolores's solo part, and it's always so lovely to hear him actually getting a vocal part in a song, as amazing as he is at vocal percussion 💜

Cesar continuing to do The Most (affectionate), and also it's kinda sweet how Geoff is looking at Layne here imo <3 (and also it kinda fits with how the characters they're playing, Camilo (probably) and Dolores are siblings!)

"Grappling with prophecies they couldn't understand." "Do you understand?"

(If you're rewatching a Voiceplay video, try shifting your focus to someone other than whoever you typically focus on for a certain part of the song! It will probably be worth it!)

Trust Geoff to get a dark/spooky section of the song! Voiceplay is nothing if not consistent 😝 (well, sometimes, in regards to some things 😂)

I was trying to get a good screencap of Cesar and Ashley on the "we! don't! talk about Bruno!" line, but eh, couldn't get a decent one.

(Oh btw obligatory kudos to Eli for lighting design!)

Also pay attention to Geoff during this line (before it cuts to a closeup of Ashley) - I love his little shoulder shimmy to the more-uptempo beat!)

(Rip Eli, but there was no way anybody else was singing that line - it was practically made for him! 😆) (Also love Ashley touching his head in comfort/sympathy 😄)

(Yes yes of course Ashley is very pretty and I love the petals and the slow-mo on her, now CUE!)

"He told me that my power would grow, like the grapes that thrive on the viiiine"

Yep, that still continues to be up there as one of the most bonkers-ridiculous moments in a Voiceplay video ever. 🤣 (Also if it weren't hilarious enough, check out Ashley's Offended(tm) face in the first and second pictures above, and Layne's Extremely Concerned face in the second picture! ("uhh, Geoff. something you wanna tell me, dude?"))

I'm a little fuzzy on specifics, but apparently the idea for this moment came about when Voiceplay was acquiring clothing for everyone, and Ashley's outfit arrived in two different sizes (just in case one might fit better than the other). Turns out one of the copies of the outfit was a perfect fit for Geoff, and one thing led to another, and we ended up with Aspiring Disney Princess Geoff that you see in the images above 😄😋)

(When I said "don't just get you a man who can do both, get yourself a man that can do everything" back in my Frozen 2 Medley post, I meant it!!!)

(Oh and this section really was slowed down in post-production in order to make the petals (and hair flips!) look nice, and so both Ashley and Geoff were having to sing/lip-sync to sped up versions of their vocal lines!)

I somehow didn't pick up on this till a commenter pointed it out, but Layne copies Geoff's "spooky finger wiggles" movement! It's got Younger Sibling vibes ngl (though Dolores is actually older than Camillo iirc, and I'm an only child anyway so idk)

Ashley and Cesar were both great in this video, really seemed to play off each other quite a bit!

Man, what a video. Amazing to watch, and also a really great to watch other people react to, for multiple reasons! 😁

There's not much for me to say that I haven't already said about Voiceplay before, but I will say that if you liked this one, go watch their Mini for Surface Pressure if you haven't already! It was filmed during the same shoot as this one (same set, same clothes), and uploaded a few days prior. It's only a short video, sure, but it's still very much worth a watch.
