On August 2nd 1922 Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone, died.

Bell, best known as the inventor of the telephone, also made other significant contributions to society during his extraordinary life. He created other useful tools and devices, he made a lifelong commitment to deaf education, and he helped fund some of the most influential periodicals of the time just as they were getting off the ground.

But I've covered most of that in previous posts, so I have decided to delve into his visions and his philanthropy. Bell is overshadowed by his fellow Scot Andrew Carnegie in the philanthropist work, and rightly so, however we shouldn't overlook his own endeavours.

Here are a few quotes from Alexander that resonate today.

“There is no reason why we should not use the roofs of our houses to install solar apparatus to catch and store heat received from the sun.” 1914

“It will not be long until a man can take dinner in New York and breakfast the next morning in Liverpool.” 1896

“The day will come when the man at the telephone will be able to see the distant person to whom he is speaking.” 1906

“The unchecked burning of fossil fuels would have a sort of greenhouse effect…” 1917.

Bell was also one of the founders of National Geographic, which to this day has conservationists, philanthropists, young activists, scientists fighting environment and Conservation ·issues.

Over his lifetime, Bell wrote nearly a thousand pages of essays about education of the deaf. He spoke at innumerable conferences and testified before committees, created and funded a national organization for teachers of the deaf.

Alexander Graham Bell died of complications arising from diabetes on this day 1922, at his private estate in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, at age 75. His last view of the land he had inhabited was by moonlight on his mountain estate at 2:00 a.m. While tending to him, Mabel, his wife, whispered, "Don't leave me." By way of reply, Bell signed "no…", lost consciousness, and died shortly after.

On learning of Bell's death, the Canadian Prime Minister, Mackenzie King, cabled Mrs. Bell, saying:

My colleagues in the Government join with me in expressing to you our sense of the world's loss in the death of your distinguished husband. It will ever be a source of pride to our country that the great invention, with which his name is immortally associated, is a part of its history. On the behalf of the citizens of Canada, may I extend to you an expression of our combined gratitude and sympathy.

Bell's coffin, as seen in the third pic, was constructed of Beinn Bhreagh pine by his laboratory staff, lined with the same red silk fabric used in his tetrahedral kite experiments. To help celebrate his life, his wife asked guests not to wear black (the traditional funeral color) while attending his service, during which soloist Jean MacDonald sang a verse of Robert Louis Stevenson's "Requiem":

Under a wide and starry sky, Dig the grave and let me lie. Glad did I live and gladly die And I laid me down with a will.

Upon the conclusion of Bell's funeral, for one minute at 6:25 p.m. Eastern Time, "every phone on the continent of North America was silenced in honor of the man who had given to mankind the means for direct communication at a distance". Alexander Graham Bell was buried atop Beinn Bhreagh mountain, on his estate where he had resided increasingly for the last 35 years of his life, overlooking Bras d'Or Lake.[ He was survived by his wife Mabel, his two daughters, Elsie May and Marian, and nine of his grandchildren.

History

In 1992, the University of the Highlands and Islands was established. In February 2011, the Privy Council granted the organisation full university status; in 2012, Anne, Princess Royal was appointed Chancellor of the University of the Highlands and Islands Court. The institution's academic partners are gradually spread out across Perth, Elgin, the Isle of Skye, Fort William, Shetland, Orkney, and the Western Isles. The former Royal Northern Infirmary building in Inverness served as the central hub's original location. The UHI network comprises of multi-campus universities connected to one another sequentially via technology since it is a very robust and distinctive network. After being granted higher education institute status by the Scottish Parliament in April 2001, it became known as the UHI Millennium Institute. Deans with extensive full-time experience were chosen for each of the three faculties in 2004. Additionally, the Open University Validation Service, the University of Strathclyde, and the University of Aberdeen provided authenticity to the University degrees prior to receiving taught degree granting authority (LDAP). Scott Sutherland End of Year Show 2022, Ideas for Living

The Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment’s End of Year Show 2022, ‘Ideas for Living’, launches at Robert Gordon University (RGU) on Friday 6 May.

Scott Sutherland School celebrate the class of 2020 / 21 with a digital exhibition

The Scott Sutherland School will be transformed into a creative hub, showcasing exciting and inspiring projects from architecture and architectural technology students including students from the BSc (Hons) Architectural Technology course, BSc Architecture / Masters of Architecture (MArch) and the MSc Advanced Architectural Design.

Work from Masters of Architeture student, 23 year old Maxwell Wilson from the village of Lhanbryde, outside of Elgin, Moray. Maxwell’s Master’s project is part of the University’s Pomona framework for Finstown in Orkney which aims to revive the town and provide a sustainable community for islanders. He creates a horticulture greenhouse that would be used to grow locally produced herbs and spices. These would be used in an adjoining gin distillery. A 3rd greenhouse would provide residential training thereby creating jobs in the community:

This is the first on-campus exhibition since the start of the pandemic and follows two years of digitalised events.

Head of School, Professor David McClean will open an exclusive launch event on Friday 6 May at 4pm. This will feature a selection of student presentations and a pop-up-market showcasing projects from across the School, to members of the University community, and friends and family of the students.

The #ScottsEndofYearShow is free to attend and opens fully to the public on Monday 9 May, 10am until 4pm. It will run weekdays until Friday 20 May, taking place at The Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment.

Work from Master of Architecture student, Cameron Duncan from Edinburgh. He’s designed a ’15-minute green corridor centred around a zero-carbon, sustainable community and a new and imaginative high level walkway in Torry, Aberdeen:

The exhibition features a range of exciting and ambitious ideas, thinking and future development opportunities for Aberdeen, Orkney and the Western Isles. Whilst hypothetical in nature, they are grounded in rigorous research.

One of those exhibiting, Part Two architecture student, Emily Grundy from Laurencekirk, Aberdeenshire, said: “I’m really excited to be taking part in the end of year show and can’t wait to share my ideas for Torry.

“The creation of new Nigg Bay Harbour and the removal of the original industrial harbour, which once defined Torry as a stuck and distant place, offers new hope for the area. Torry has so much potential for live, work and play. I’ve highlighted many possible paths of improvements including a new, interactive river front, with open spaces and a vibrant esplanade along the River Dee. This would help foster a sense of community in Torry and attract tourists to the area.”

For this interview we spoke with Adam Ferris (AF, above centre) and Matthew Wood (MW, above left) of new local indie band Galapagos. SA: How did Galapagos start as a band, and how did you come up with the name? AF: Matt and I had always talked about getting together to work on music. Our schedules for whatever reason never matched up for us to do that until the fall of 2015. This was when my last project (Waxing Moon) stopped playing shows and Matt was free from his last band (Idle Lie). We finally got together and started working on some songs I had been working on. The sound of Matt’s guitar playing really brought my simple songs to life. It was exciting and comfortable right off the bat. We played under a few names for some open mics including Aeros and then Mosey. We then realized that it sounded too much like local band Mosely. The name Galapagos comes from the name of one of my favourite Smashing Pumpkins songs on Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. I loved the name. My partner at the time thought the name Galapagos sounded great for a band and then Matt loved it too. I think it sounds fun and exotic. It sounds like a place where things evolve.  MW: A lot of what Adam was writing reminded me of a few bands back in Indiana (Chaste By Bears, Prayer Breakfast,  Husband&Wife).  It had this Midwest feel to the songs with a nice poppy hook to it.  When I was listening to his music, I immediately had ideas for complementary parts to add to it.  

SA: Who are your biggest influences, musically or otherwise? AF: Musically speaking I am mostly influenced by things from my teen years like Smashing Pumpkins, Oasis, and Hayden. In more recent years I have been a huge fan of acts like Catfish and the Bottlemen, Deer Tick and Ryan Adams. These bands mostly influenced me with the sincerity in their lyrics. As a Pisces, I enjoy wearing my heart on my sleeve. So the songs are influenced by my current experiences. Part of that is my continuing my journey through personal growth. Some of these awarenesses and struggles come up in the songs. I lean more towards reflective and emotional lyrical content while others are just straight-forward and direct. MW:  Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead) due to his innovative guitar style while finding amazing ways to combine traditional electric guitar with digital manipulation.  Nick Drake for his somber chords, his tragic story, and his powerful influence for many artists. Sun Kil Moon’s Mark Kozelek for his honest lyrics and melancholy themes. Also, because he’s a fellow Midwesterner.

SA: Thus far in your career, what has been your biggest success? MW:  The biggest success so far was just forming this band.  It took a long time for us to get together and see what we could add to one another’s songs.  Once we set aside the time to look at everything, we started to create music we were proud of and loved. AF: I'd have to say the fact that we haven't rushed this process. We have let the process guide us and lead us to where we are supposed to go. It's been challenging at times but rewarding overall.

SA: On the other hand, what is the biggest challenge you have faced, and how have you dealt with it? AF:  For me it has been balancing my wants musically with the reality of growing up. How much money and time can I spend on this? Who wants to commit to this as much as I do? I’ve always preferred the camaraderie of the band experience and having space for some solo work on the side. It allows flexibility for the different songs I write. Sometimes a song will work better on my own than as a part of a group and vice versa. For me, finding people I can trust and get along well with has been difficult. Luckily, Matt and I get along great outside of the band context and I fully trust him musically. I have had too many musical projects start strong and then putter out. I am hoping that this isn’t the case with Galapagos. With this project I have approached it with patience. I haven’t forced a time frame on things or creating a particular sound. We have let it be what it needs to be. We are allowing Galapagos the space to breathe and grow and evolve. MW: The biggest challenge has been to break out of my usual rhythms and chords and try to learn more for guitar and adding texture to the music.  There are times I feel everything I do is derivative of something I’ve done in the past and this either frustrates me, or pushes me to do something new.

SA: How do you approach the song-writing process? MW:  Adam usually brings in some snippets of music or a full song.  Once we hear it, Tyler and I play over top and see what we can add. AF: It ends up being a totally collaborative effort with each member bringing their own unique ideas and influences to the songs. It helps the songs grow into something that it didn’t really sound like when I first brought it to the band. There is something really special about creating music with other people that you don’t get when one person runs the whole operation. It’s exciting process for us and I think we really enjoy playing together.

SA: What are your thoughts on the Ottawa music scene? MW:  It’s been blossoming so much the past 5 years.  Apart from the loss of Mugshots, The Daily Grind, and Folklore Centre in Old Ottawa South, the Ottawa scene has been very proactive in building up the economic and communal presence it needs to become a more prominent cultural hub in Canada. AF: I really hope that the scene continues to grow. There is a great diversity amongst the acts and there is not an evening you can’t go out and see great live talent for a great price. This evening alone, Matt and I can’t decide between going to see a show at Live on Elgin or at Irene’s.

SA: On your Facebook page, I've seen reference to Garage Folk as a genre for your sound. Why 'Garage Folk' and did you consciously set out to make a certain style of music, or did it happen more organically? AF:  I don’t think we started off with any idea of where we wanted to go. We just wanted to write and play. With Matt and I, it has always been very organic for both our friendship and creatively speaking. When we were playing as a duo, the sound came out pretty naturally. We did however, always picture it including drums or how he would add all these guitar dynamics when we recorded them. When Tyler joined the group, we decided to abandon our old songs and to start writing new ones. We were all in on that idea and I think it has helped bring us together as a band. With two electric guitars now, our sound is slightly heavier. Hence the gritty pop label we have given ourselves on our web pages. MW:  We’ve had a nice gritty element to our music so the genre of Garage Folk seemed apt.  We also dabble a little bit in folk, shoegaze, poppy emo songs, and anything that comes to mind.

SA: You guys posted a video of a new song called Lungs on your social media pages. How has the song-writing process been going, and how will you narrow down what songs to include on a release? AF:  As of right now we have a full set of original songs. I love having this many songs so we don’t have to cut any from a set list. I obviously have favourites but I hate having to cut songs for setlists. It’s like deciding which child doesn’t get to eat. The songwriting process has been a real collaborative effort in this new formation of the band. As a result we have three or four songs I think we all agree that we want to record first.  There is also one song that we are planning to never record but will play at every show. I don’t want to give away any surprises but if you want to hear this song, come on out to Pressed on March 24th. MW:  The process has been chugging along at a nice pace.  As of right now, we’ve been working on just tightening up our current music for future shows and recording sessions.  I’m excited to put those songs out to public scrutiny and also start making new songs again.

SA: If you could send out some love to some local musicians you have been enjoying recently, or who are perhaps even influences, who would they be? AF: I would like to give a shout out to our good friend Travis and his band Fire Antlers. I remember playing a solo show with Travis about three years ago at the old Cafe Luneta. He was just starting out this new project. At this point it just him, his guitar and a drum machine. Since then he has evolved his sound to incorporate a full band. His songs are really groovy and it has been fun seeing him rearrange his old songs as his band takes on new shapes. Just the other week at the Rainbow, his band was comprised of him and his guitar, a new drum machine, a second guitarist and a keyboardist. It's always a good time at a Fire Antlers show.  His tunes are solid and you can’t help but want to move while listening. MW:  Jamieson MacKay from Shadowhand and How Far To Mexico.  He has been immensely involved in Ottawa's music scene playing lots of shows with his bands as well as some solo performances. He's made a great name for himself and his creative output is phenomenal.  Also, Fet.Nat and the label E-Tron Records is the reason I stayed in Ottawa/Gatineau music scene in the first place.  The entire collective is the most inspiring act in the area.

SA: Lastly, what’s in store for Galapagos in 2017 and onwards? MW:  We’re gearing up to record an EP and we’ve done some submissions for future shows.  It’ll be an exciting year for us. AF:  I hope to be playing more shows and getting tighter as a unit. Finding a bassist would also be a priority at some point I would think as well. Oh and of course having more people hear our songs.

Arriving in Grey Bruce

The first Chinese presence in Grey County was recorded in the Union Publishing Co.'s Farmers and Business Directory for the Counties of Bruce Grey Muskoka, Ontario and Simcoe for 1896 Vol. IX --- Wing Hing Laundry in Meaford and Lee Wing Laundry in Owen Sound. Two years later, Durham saw its first Chinese resident Wah Lee, who owned and operated the New Chinese Laundry (The Durham Chronicle, August 1898). In 1901, another Chinese laundryman, Lee Toy, arrived in Grey County to reside in Bentinck. In the same year, Chinese also reached some Bruce County towns --- Chesley, Lucknow, Paisely, Teeswater, Walkerton. More Chinese came in the next decade; by 1911, Chinese immigrants were living in 19 towns throughout Grey Bruce, adding Stokes Bay, Hanover, Kincardine, Port Elgin, Southampton, Thornbury, Wiarton, Carrick, Dundalk and Markdale to the list.

These first Chinese residents in Grey Bruce shared three common characteristics: they all operated hand laundry(the exception was Ah Sing in Stokes Bay who seemingly worked in a stone quarry); they knew very little to no English; and they were all men.

Hand laundry as an occupation was invented by Chinese men living in Victoria, B.C. during the time when the CPR was being built in the 19th century. In view of the often life-threatening work conditions,  a few of the Chinese railroad workers started looking into finding an alternative means to generate income. All railroad workers were men, most of whom were reluctant to do the chores which was considered to be woman's work. Unsurprisingly, the offer of washing clothes in exchange for a minimal fee was well received in the “bachelor society”. To set up a hand laundry in the railroad camp, all a person needed was to have access to water and the means to boil it.

During the Gold Rush, the Chinese were only allowed to take over mines which had almost been depleted by the white gold panners. Working on the railroad, the Chinese workers were assigned the most dangerous tasks for only half of the wages their Irish counterpart received. Consequently, after paying for necessary expenses and sending money home, the Chinese immigrants remained poor. When systemic racial discrimination forced the Chinese to move east, they left with very little money.

Chinese who came to Canada in the 19th century were peasants and farmers from the southern part of China. They did not know how to read or write in their native language, let alone English. There would be one or two in the railroad camp who were literate. They wrote letters home for the others, helping them maintain the bondage with their families. Working on the railroads. the Chinese immigrants had neither need nor opportunity to learn English. Venturing out of British Columbia, they knew they would arrive in towns and cities where everybody spoke English, and no one spoke Chinese. Because of the language barrier, they did not hold their hopes high in finding employment. Instead, with the little money they had, they would start their own hand laundry business. Even though the business had become more sophisticated, requiring indoor workspace and some proper equipments, the start-up cost was still affordable for the Chinese immigrants. The occupation was labour-intensive and time consuming, but it was the only viable one. Coincidentally, there was a growing need for such service, as towns in Grey and Bruce Counties were starting to develop and gain its significance as ports and agricultural produces suppliers to cities and larger towns in Southern Ontario, thanks to railway and steamboats. At its peak, Owen Sound had seven Chinese laundries (Vernon's Town of Owen Sound Directory 1917). No longer one-man operations, most of them were being run by father-and-son team, brothers, or cousins. In 1911, there were 22 Chinese living in Owen Sound; two of them worked as cook in a hotel and for a private family, the rest were laundrymen (Census Canada 1911).

More than 2 decades after the railroad era, and over 4,000km away from Victoria B.C., something had remained unchanged. Chinese in Grey Bruce lived in a “bachelor society”. Census Canada 1911 data reveals that among the 22 Chinese residents in Owen Sound, there was only one woman. Luise Die(38) was the wife of Z Chew Die(39) and mother of Hinsoo Die(2); the family live on 10th Street West, where Z Chew worked as a cook for a private family. Unlike immigrants from other countries at the time, Chinese men left their wives and children behind to go aboard for work. They would send home money, and put aside some to hopefully save up enough someday to bring the family to Canada. With the low wages they were making, it would take them years to accumulate the needed amount. The challenge increased greatly when the Canadian Government started to impose Head Tax on all Chinese immigrants, with the exemption of students, teachers, missionaries, merchants and members of the diplomatic corps. In 1885, every Chinese entering Canada had to pay $50 Head Tax. A Chinese labour at the time earned $225 a year; deducting all necessary expenses, there was only $43 left to split between money to send home and to save. The Head Tax increased to $100 in 1900, then $500 in 1903. Family reunion became an impossible dream for most. In 1923, the Chinese Immigration Act, also known as the Chinese Exclusion Act, was passed, putting a stop to Chinese immigration for 25 years until the Act was repealed in 1948. From the Gold Rush days to the Act being repealed, Chinese men all throughout Canada had lived dominantly in “bachelor societies” for 90 years.

History

The University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) was founded in 1992. The Privy Council granted the university full university status in February 2011, and Anne, Princess Royal was named Chancellor of the University of the Highlands and Islands Court in 2012. The institution's academic partners are spread out over Perth, Elgin, the Isle of Skye, Fort William, Shetland, Orkney, and the Western Isles. The central hub was established in Inverness, in the former Royal Northern Infirmary building. Because the UHI network is so robust and distinctive, it is made up of multi-campus schools that are linked together through technology. When the Scottish Parliament designated it as a Higher Education Institute in April 2001, it became known as the UHI Millennium Institute. Each of the three faculties has its own full-time dean, who was appointed in 2004. Furthermore, before the Open University Validation Service, the University of Strathclyde, and the University of Aberdeen were given taught degree awarding powers (LDAP), the Open University Validation Service, the University of Strathclyde, and the University of Aberdeen gave authenticity to the University degrees. The Higher National Certificate and Higher National Diploma courses were granted by the Scottish Qualifications Authority.

The Scottish Government takes necessary initiatives for the development of transport system in collaboration with Transport Scotland, transport operators, HIE, and stakeholders between the routes to the north of Scotland and the Highlands and Islands. The Highlands and Islands Transport Partnership (HITRANS) is settled down for the Regional Transport Partnership. Therefore, the public transport network like buses, rail, islands ferries, air services is available.
