Whispers of Nature
Nature doesn’t rush, yet everything gets done.Let the trees teach you patience.Let the rivers teach you flow.Let the sun teach you to rise again.Let the seasons teach you—That change isn’t the end, it’s how we grow.

Stewardship of Life: Lessons in Compassion and Restraint from a Nest by the Road
Tumblr media
The image of a bird's nest lying on the ground beside a road, holding a few eggs, evokes both a sense of fragility and an invitation to reflect on the sacredness of life. This scene brings to mind the verses from Deuteronomy 22:6-7, which advise compassion and restraint when encountering a bird's nest in the wild: "If you come across a bird's nest beside the road… and the mother is sitting on the young or on the eggs, do not take the mother with the young." The instructions encourage us to let the mother bird go free, symbolizing a deep-seated respect for life and the continuity of creation. This ancient law, though simple in wording, captures a profound principle of stewardship and compassionate restraint that resonates even today.
The Fragile Nature of Life
Seeing a nest on the ground beside a road speaks to the vulnerability of all creatures in the face of human activity. Roads and pathways, symbols of human progress and movement, often represent potential danger to the natural world. A nest beside such a path, in the open and exposed, emphasizes how delicate life can be when it intersects with our lives. It brings to mind the careful balance that exists in nature, a balance that can be easily disrupted by even the smallest human actions. This reminds us of our responsibility not only to avoid unnecessary harm but to protect the vulnerable. In many ways, this resonates with modern conservation efforts, where simple acts, like setting aside land as wildlife habitats or practicing sustainable harvesting, have become crucial steps toward preserving the natural order.
Biblical Perspectives on Compassion and Restraint
The command in Deuteronomy is more than just a guideline for interacting with wildlife; it’s a reflection of a broader biblical principle that calls us to honor life. The Bible consistently emphasizes that compassion should extend beyond human beings to include animals and nature itself. Proverbs 12:10 states, “The righteous care for the needs of their animals,” highlighting that caring for other creatures is a sign of righteousness. Similarly, God’s command to rest on the Sabbath extended to animals as well (Exodus 23:12), showing that divine compassion recognizes the needs of all living things.
This principle invites us to look beyond immediate gain and consider the well-being of others—whether human or animal. The instruction to let the mother bird go so that “it may go well with you” implies a connection between our actions and the blessings we receive. In this way, the biblical text teaches that acts of kindness and restraint align us with God’s will, fostering harmony with creation and inviting blessings.
Evidence of Compassion in Our World Today
In our contemporary world, acts of restraint and compassion toward nature are increasingly valued and often necessary. One example is the practice of “catch and release” fishing, where certain fish are returned to the water to allow populations to grow. This practice, like the command in Deuteronomy, is based on understanding the need for balance—taking only what is necessary and preserving the rest for future generations.
In wildlife conservation, sanctuaries and rehabilitation centers work tirelessly to protect endangered species, reflecting a commitment to protect life in all its forms. These efforts are driven by the realization that each species plays a role in the ecosystem and that the loss of even a single species affects the entire web of life. Similarly, in areas where logging occurs, responsible forestry practices often involve replanting trees to ensure sustainability. In each of these cases, we see modern examples of the principle of stewardship—using resources wisely while ensuring their availability for future generations.
The Sacredness of Life and the Divine Mandate for Stewardship
When we consider a nest by the roadside, it symbolizes not just a place for new life but the fragility and beauty of that life. This view aligns with the biblical idea that life itself is sacred, and our role is to protect and nurture it. In Genesis, God gives humanity dominion over the earth, but this dominion is not a license for exploitation; it is a call to stewardship. Our dominion is meant to reflect God’s love and care, managing creation with the same compassion and respect that He shows us.
The nest, vulnerable and open, also reminds us of our shared vulnerability as part of creation. Like the eggs in the nest, we too depend on a delicate balance for survival, relying on the earth, water, air, and each other. Recognizing this interconnectedness fosters a sense of humility, urging us to approach nature with reverence.
A Call to Live with Compassionate Awareness
As we move through life, encountering moments like a nest on the roadside, we are reminded that every choice we make has a ripple effect. To act with compassion and restraint is to acknowledge that we are part of a larger tapestry of life that transcends human ambition or progress. The biblical injunction to release the mother bird challenges us to embrace a way of living that respects the sanctity of life, one that is attentive to the needs of other beings and responsive to the call for stewardship.
In a world where human actions often endanger wildlife and ecosystems, following these timeless principles can guide us toward a more balanced existence. The bird's nest on the road becomes a powerful symbol—a reminder that even in the smallest acts, we can choose compassion, honor life, and fulfill a divine mandate that reaches beyond words and into the heart of creation.

Nature is one of the first indications of change, when species learn to adapt, and redefine social constructs, obliterating and replacing outdated modes of survival, instinct, inheritance and learned behavior, it opens the door for all living creatures to evolve, create, and change.

Most of my life I compared myself to others and wanted to make their abilities my own.
Only recently have I learned from nature. All trees have their strengths and weaknesses. They don't compare them or wish they were another. They just exist, grow, and live their life.
"The Aspen doesn't compare itself to the Willow. Neither will I." CV McCay

PAWSOME BOBCAT CHRONICLES by #wildographer @kaigner: “Is it strange to miss a wild animal? . I know—I hope—she is still present in the landscape, even though I do not see her. I see tracks, and the remains of kills; but, they might not be hers, for her children too roam the land. . In the spring, she uses the house to den, and as a respite from sweltering days. It is at the house we cross lives. It is at the house, where I am granted access to her presence. We share an intersection of time and a narrow passage of space. I cannot move with ease through her home; a landscape of low brush and prickly pear cactus. I cannot follow. So I wait. I wait until Spring when the air turns hot, and a den is needed. I wait for the space we have shared in the past, and hope there is a future. . Something happens when Momcat is around. She teaches me that Life is quite simple. That existence only requires a few things. That the quiet is filled with telling sounds, if only you pay attention and listen. She teaches patience. And trust. And, the art of being present. These are all things necessary to succeed in the wild; and ironically, they are all things necessary to succeed in our own human lives. She teaches what humans seek answers to-yet we look podcasts and therapy instead of learning from those who already know. . I know there will be a day when she will no longer arrive. But until then, I can only believe that she is fine; as she has been for the years I have known her, and the years before we met. . Until next spring my friend, I can not imagine any other way.” . #Wildography #wildlifephotography #momcat #bobcat #wildlife #lifelessons #lessonsfromnature #catlovers #wildlifeplanet #wildlifeonearth #conservationeducation #spiritanimal #animals_captures #animalsinfluence #animal_sultans #bigcatswildlife #bigcats #natgeo #bobcatchronicles #cute #wildcats #catstagram #bigcatsofinstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CIQEVsKgLVV/?igshid=1jhgfxsr07q29

When I'm in Portland during the week, I miss my garden at home. So I planted some lettuce and radish seeds (plus maybe bought a few plants from Costco) so I still feel like I'm growing things. I've always known I likes gardening. And that it was good for me. I remember 4th of July weekend after my mum died, savagely pruning back our laurel hedge, letting my grief and anger out. But I didn't realize until this past year just how much I need it. To stay whole and grounded, sane and present in this tumultuous life. Gardening reminds me that life has seasons, that things are ever changing, that we do our part and let nature do the rest. That the seeds we plant are what grows. Plus those endocannabinoids from exercise are literally dope. #gardeninglife #stillenglish #growingfromseed #lessonsfromnature https://www.instagram.com/p/COgCeiwH4H5/?igshid=17gikfukhr6kr

The crickets tell me to give you a second chance Things aren’t what they seem at first glance Holding onto anger and resentment Sometimes feels easier than love and forgiveness The hawk flies High in the sky Catching a warm winter breeze Reminding me why... We’re on this journey together Sorta like buddies on the winged birds feather The mushroom on the tree Says to be still, let it be Though time isn’t “real” It’s the passing of it that heals Though now we may be floundering in a flooded desert wash Hold my hand, Eventually in the sand We will land . . . . #secondchances #mushrooms #sedona #arizona #desertscene #influencer #poetry #relationships #nobodyisperfect #vintageshoes #poetsofinstagram #nature #naturephotography #believeinyourself #wereinthistogether #couplegoals #promises #lessonsfromnature (at Oak Creek, Arizona) https://www.instagram.com/p/BrETZ71nc2v/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=plmgi13o7d3j

These windy days are reminding us of when we used the wind to help us, rather than trying to fight it. The south easter showcased our table runners like never before! These past few months have definitely taught us that going with the flow is a good thing. #MUNIonThis: Many of the world's greatest thinkers - scientists, writers, designers and leaders - sought refuge and insight from nature. It provided them with the space with which to rejuvenate their minds, the lessons on the fundamental order of the world, and the inspiration to protect its inhabitants - human, flora and fauna alike. . It is our hope that those who seek joy in travel today also go forth with the mindfulness to preserve nature and learn from it, not only so that we have a pretty place to go back to, but because it is essential to our survival. . . . . . #responsibletravel #mindfultravel #nature #conservation #biodiversity #lawsofnature #alberteinstein #mindfulliving #consciousconsumption #lessonsfromnature #mothernature #greenliving #zerowaste #zerowasteph #culturalcreatives #survival #mindfulness

. Softening Sunset :: Single Line ((Zoom In)) . #getoutoftownvibe . I drove along Lake Revelstoke last night in search of alpine vistas, as it was the first clear day in about a week. These snow capped mountains were quite literally glowing as I rounded the bend, giving me reason to pause. . I pulled over and watched with my watercolor paint set as the sky turned from a tangerine blaze, to a muted lavender, then into a soft blue, and finally a deep, dark azure behind the still illuminated alpine snowfields. It’s intensity softened overtime and allowed the sky and mountains to blend together in a chromatic partnership. . I woke up this morning to news that Biden is the projected winner of the Presidency in America, and it made me reflect on this sunset with a feeling of optimism and hope towards the United States. Hope that the bright and fiery frenzy of human emotion and fight for justice will, overtime, soften and blend into a calmer more unified place and palette. . There are so many lessons from this practice of painting, or just sitting and watching the sun set. Here’s to the future, and may it be as bright and harmonious as a clear, crisp winter sunset in the mountains! . #lessonsfromnature #colorstudy #jessagilbertart @burton @skidagram (at Revelstoke, British Columbia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CHTRK75Bp9_/?igshid=1trw08ofgdsus

Indeed, we (human beings) have deviated from our nature and as a result we suffer. Can you name some of the ways we are living unnaturally that are creating the dis-eases that people are suffering from? “The deviation of man from the state in which he was originally placed by nature seems to have proved to him a prolific source of diseases.” ~ Edward Jenner #truth #wisdom #quotes #healthquotes #naturallaw #universallaws #wecantcheatnature #lessonsfromnature #health #wellness #illness #disease #manmadeproblems #covid_19 #coronavirus #coronapocalypse #panicbuying #dontpanic #dontworry #gobacktonature #trustnature #natureiswise #livenaturally #eathealthy #eatnatural #returntonature #wearepartofnature #CheersMyDears #Natureans #FromNatureForNature https://www.instagram.com/p/B9sB6Z9HBmn/?igshid=ovlwnoa9m1oy
