The day I moved to Santiago, my sister was diagnosed with HPV 16. I’ve seen her cry before, but this time she was broken, convinced beyond any reassurance that she’d never have kids again. What was supposed to be a big change for me suddenly became all about her. I dropped my things and cooked dinner, but the new place, the new city, the new world—everything was in the back of my mind. I guess that’s how change works. You keep going, and maybe in a month or six, it’ll hit me: those beach days feel so far away, like another life altogether by then Fernanda will be either just fine or in treatment and will be my time to move again and cook dinner in a whole new place.

The lady on your left/my right is my godmother. And she’s honestly one of the best people in my life. She helped my mom through losing her dad, my grandpa, and a major upheaval for both her parents. It’s why I came out as trans to her yesterday. I know my mom wants someone not me or my dad to talk to, and I had to give her this gift. And I’ve found more love and support in my family. Recently I’ve been thinking about what it means to be in transition. It’s a good time to go back to your roots, what grounds you, but also a good time to be reflective. I’m allowing myself to feel and sit with difficult emotions that come with letting go. I’m also finding peace and expressing thankfulness for moments of love, support, and happiness I’ve experienced in my personal, professional, and spiritual life as I shed these Fall leaves 🍁 in light of new budding chapters.
