Demo Review: Vince Guaraldi Trio - “Linus and Lucy” (Studio Test)

No one has yet come up with a time machine, but the folks who discovered the studio test of “Linus and Lucy” came close.

“Hello; one, two, three, four,” Guaraldi says as the track begins. “April the 30th, 1964.”

The test captures the pianist and a studio engineer checking mics and recording equipment and running through a skeletal rendering of “Linus and Lucy.” There’s additional chatter; Guaraldi playing the tune sans his eponymous trio, to which the song is credited; improvising and stopping; and following the engineer’s request to “keep playing.”

The track announces the April 11 arrival of the remastered and expanded Jazz Impressions of a Boy Named Charlie Brown reissue, featuring 11 previously unheard outtakes alongside a refreshed edition of the original LP.

Everyone knows “Linus and Lucy.” This eye- and ear-opening bit of studio work tells the story of how it came together, which is precisely what a release like this should do.
