NICE DCV is a different entity now. Along with improvements and bug fixes, NICE DCV is now known as Amazon DCV with the 2024.0 release.

The DCV protocol that powers Amazon Web Services(AWS) managed services like Amazon AppStream 2.0 and Amazon WorkSpaces is now regularly referred to by its new moniker.

What’s new with version 2024.0?

A number of improvements and updates are included in Amazon DCV 2024.0 for better usability, security, and performance. The most recent Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is now supported by the 2024.0 release, which also offers extended long-term support to ease system maintenance and the most recent security patches. On first run, you need to connect to an Azure IoT Hub using a connection string. You can then manage graph topologies and instances on the chosen device. You can get a connection string by following the instructions in the Quickstart. Follow the steps up until Configure the Azure IoT Tools extension and use the connection string in this extension instead of Azure IoT Tools.

Setup LVA edge graph extension

After successfully installing this extension and its prerequisites, you can follow the steps below to get started with Live Video on Analytics on IoT Edge devices.

Connect to the IoT Hub

You will need to use the IoT Hub connection string to connect this extension to it.

In Explorer of VS Code, click the 'Live Video Analytics' extension in the left pane.

Click on 'Enter Connection String' button

Enter the Iot Hub Connection string that you want use (It is one-time configuration, and please make sure it is IoT Hub Connection String and not Device Connection String. The format is HostName=<my-hub>.azure-devices.net;SharedAccessKeyName=<my-policy>;SharedAccessKey=<my-policy-key>)

The device list will be shown

Choose the device you want to use to deploy the media graphs

A list of modules that are already deployed to the device will be displayed

Choose the Live Video Analytics module from the list

Open the VS Code Explorer or press Ctrl+ Shift + E and search for the Azure IoT hub extension at the bottom left pane

Pull up the extension and find the IoT Hub

Right click the ... button and select 'Start Monitoring Built-in Event Endpoint' option

Expand the Devices, Modules and the Live Video Analytics module nodes in the left pane

Click the + icon next to 'Graph Topologies'

A panel will open on the right that will help you in creating a graph topology

You will start by providing a 'Topology name'

You can either create a new topology by dragging and dropping the topology components available in the left panel

Or, you can try out some sample topologies that we have created by clicking the 'Try sample topologies' in the top menu bar

Once you are done creating the topology and providing values for the required fields, save the topology by clicking the 'Save' button

You should then see the topology name in the left pane

Activate Graph Instances

Once a graph topology is created, you need to create an instance of the topology

Here you will provide the values to the graph instance parameters

Once all the required parameters are filled in, you can 'Save' the instance and activate it later or 'Save and activate' the graph instance

Once the graph is activated, you will see a green icon next to the graph instance name

Open the Output console by pressing Ctrl+ Shift + U and observe the IoT Hub messages start flowing

I had a good couple weeks working on the taglist code and some other jobs.

If you are on Windows and use the 'extract' release, you may want to do a 'clean' install this week. Extra notes below.

taglists

So, I took some time to make taglists work a lot cleaner behind the scenes and support more types of data. A heap of code is cleaner, and various small logical problems related to menus are fixed. The tag right-click menu is also more compact, quicker to see and do what you want.

The main benefits though are in the manage tags dialog. Now, the '(will display as xxx)' sibling suffix colours in the correct namespace for the sibling, and parents 'hang' underneath all tags in all the lists. It is now much easier to see why a parent or sibling is appearing for a file.

This is a first attempt. I really like how these basically work, but it can get a bit busy with many tags. With the cleaner code, it will be much easier to expand in future. I expect to add 'expand/collapse parents' settings and more sorts, and maybe shade parents a bit transparent, in the coming weeks. Please let me know how it works for you IRL and I'll keep working.

I picked two roughly at random and added new downloaders for them. If you have Nitter subs, please move their 'sources' over, and they should start working again (they might need to do a bit of 'resync' and will complain about file limits being hit since the URLs are different, but give them time). If you would rather use another mirror, feel free to duplicate your own downloaders as well. Thanks to a user who helped here with some fixed-up parsers.

I gave the recently borked grouped 'status' sort in thread watchers and downloader pages another go, and I improved the reporting there overall. The 'working' status shouldn't flicker on and off as much, there is a new 'pending' status for downloaders waiting for a work slot, and the 'file status' icon column now shows the 'stop' symbol when files are all done.

The menu entry to 'open similar-looking files' is now further up on thumbnails' 'open' submenus.

The duplicate filter has its navigation buttons on the right-hand hover window rearranged a bit. It is silly to have both 'previous' and 'next' when there are only two files, so I merged them. You can also set 'view next' as a separate shortcut for the duplicate filter, if you want to map 'flip file' to something else just for the filter.

If you use the Windows installer, do not worry, these issues are fixed automatically for you from now on.

I updated to a new dev machine this week. Some libraries were updated, and there is now a dll conflict, where a dll from an older version is interfering with a new one. As it happens, the library that fails to load is one I made optional this week, so it doesn't ''seem'' to actually stop you from booting the client, but it will stop you from running the Client API in https if you never did it before (the library does ssl certificate generation).

when siblings display with the '(will display as xxx)' suffix, this text is now coloured by the correct namespace!

parents now show in 'manage tags dialog' taglists! they show up just like in a write/edit tag autocomplete results list

the tag right-click menu has had a pass. 'copy' is now at the top, the 'siblings and parents' menu is split into 'siblings' and 'parents' with counts on the top menu label and the submenus for each merged, and the 'open in new page' commands are tucked into an 'open' submenu. the menu is typically much tighter than before

when you hit 'select files with these tags' from a taglist, the thumbgrid now takes keyboard focus if you want to hit F7 or whatever

custom tag presentation (_options->tag presentation_, when you set to always hide namespaces or use custom namespace separator in read/search views) is more reliable across the program. it isn't perfect yet, but I'll keep working

a heap of taglist code has been cleaned up. some weird logical issues should be better

thread watchers also now have the concept of 'pending', and also report when they are next checking

improved the new grouped status sort on gallery downloader and watcher pages. the ascending order is now DONE, working, pending, checking later (for watchers), paused

the network request delay after a system resume is now editable under the new options->system panel. default is 15 seconds

the 'wait on files too' option is moved from 'files and trash' to this panel

when the 'just woke' status is active, you now get a little popup with a cancel button to override it

thanks to a user helping me out, I was able to figure out a set of lookups in the sibling/parent system that were performing unacceptably slow for some users. this was due to common older versions of sqlite that could not optimise a join with a multi-index OR expression. these queries are now simpler and should perform well for all clients. if your autocomplete results from a search page with thumbs were achingly slow, let me know how they work now!

the hydrus url normalisation code now treats '+' more carefully. search queries like 6+girls should now work correctly on their own on sites where '+' is used as a tag separator. they no longer have to be mixed with other tags to work

the similar files maintenance search on shutdown now reports file progress every 10 files and initialises on 0. it also has faster startup time in all cases

when a service is deleted, all currently open file pages will check their current file and tag domains and update to nicer defaults if they were pointed at the now-missing services

improved missing service error handling for file searches in general--this can still hit an export folder pointed at a missing service

PyOpenSSL is now optional. it is only needed to generate the crt/key files for https hosting. if you try to boot the server or run the client api in https without the files and without the module available to generate new ones, you now get a nice error. the availability of this library is now in the client's about window

the mpv player will no longer throw ugly errors when you try to seek on a file that its API interface cannot support

loading a file in the media viewer no longer waits on the file system lock on the main thread (it was, very briefly), so the UI won't hang if you click a thumb just after waking up or while a big file job is going on

the 'just woke' code is a little cleaner all around

the user-made downloader repository link is now more obvious on Lain's import dialog

an old hardcoded url class sorting preference that meant gallery urls would be matched against urls before post, and post before file, is now eliminated. url classes are now just preferenced by number of path components, then how many parameters, then by example url length, with higher numbers matching first (the aim is that the more 'specific' and complicated a url class, the earlier it should attempt to match)

updated some of the labelling in manage tag siblings and parents

when you search autocomplete tags with short inputs, they do not currently give all 'collapsed' matching results, so an input of 'a' or '/a/' does not give the '/a/' tag. this is an artifact of the new search cache. after looking at the new code, there is no way I can currently provide these results efficiently. I tested the best I could figure out, but it would have added 20-200ms lag on all PTR searches, so instead I have made a plan to resurrect an old cache in a more efficient way. please bear with me on this problem

tag searches that only include unusual characters like ? or & are now supported without having to lead the query with an asterisk. they will be slower than normal text search

fixed a bug in the 'add tags before import' dialog for local imports where deleting a 'quick namespace' was not updating the tag list above

windows clean install:

I moved to a new windows dev machine this week and a bunch of libraries were updated. the Windows installer has been updated to remove many old files. it should now do clever clean installs every week, you have nothing to worry about!™

the local tags cache, which caches tags for your commonly-accessed hard drive files, is now spun off to its own module

on invalid tag repair, the new master tags module and local tags cache are now better about forgetting broken tags

the main service store is spun off to its own module. several instances of service creation, deletion, update and basic fetching are merged and cleaned here. should improve a couple of logical edge cases with update and reset

boring taglist changes:

taglists no longer manage text and predicates, but a generalised item class that now handles all text/tag/predicate generation

taglist items can occupy more than one row. all position index calculations are now separate from logical index calculations in selection, sizing, sorting, display, and navigation

all taglist items can present multiple colours per row, like OR predicates

items are responsible for sibling and parent presentation, decoupling a heap of list responsibility mess

tag filter and tag colour lists are now a separate type handled by their own item types

subordinate parent predicates (as previously shown just in write/edit autocomplete result lists) are now part of multi-row items. previously they were 'quiet' rows with special rules that hung beneath the real result. some related selection/publish logic is a bit cleaner now

string tag items are now aware of their parents and so can present them just like autocomplete results in write/edit contexts

the main taglist content update routines have significantly reduced overhead. the various expansions this week add some, so we'll see how this all shakes out

the asynchronous sibling/parent update routine that populates sibling and parent data for certain lists is smarter and saves more work when data is cached

old borked out selection/hitting-skipping code that jumped over labels and parents is now removed

'show siblings and parents' behaviour is more unified now. basically they don't show in read/search, but do in write/edit

a heap of bad old taglist code has been deleted or cleaned up

Setting up the new dev machine--I replaced my six year old HP office computer with a nice mini-pc with an SSD--worked out great, but there were some headaches as always. In times like these it becomes all the more important to remember that tools like Zoom, Slack, and Facebook Messenger are not benign public services, and while the sentiment they've expressed to the global community in responding to the crisis may be sincere, it hasn't addressed the fundamental ethical issues with any piece of proprietary software.

After taking the LibrePlanet 2020 conference online, we received a number of requests asking us to document our streaming setup. As the pandemic grew worse, this gave way to more curiosity about how the Free Software Foundation (FSF) uses free tools and free communication platforms to conduct our everyday business. And while the stereotype of hackers hunched over a white on black terminal session applies to us in some ways, many of the tools we use are available in any environment, even for people who do not have a lot of technical experience. We've started documenting ethical solutions on the LibrePlanet wiki, in addition to starting a remote communication mailing list to help each other advocate for their use.

In the suggestions that follow, a few of the tools we will recommend depend upon some "self-reliance," that is, steering clear of proprietary network services by hosting free software solutions yourself, or asking a technical friend to do it for you. It's a difficult step, and the benefits may not be immediately obvious, but it's a key part of preserving your autonomy in an age of ubiquitous digital control.

To those who have the technical expertise and available infrastructure, we urge you to consider hosting instances of free communication platforms for your friends, family, and your community at large. For example, with a modest server and some GNU/Linux knowledge, you could help local students learn in freedom by volunteering to administer an instance of one of the programs we'll be recommending below.

The need to self-host can be an uncomfortable reminder of our dependence on the "cloud" -- the network of someone else's computers -- but acknowledging our current reliance on these providers is the first step in making new, dependable systems for ourselves. During dangerous and stressful times, it's tempting to sideline our ethical commitments for easier or more convenient ways to get things done, and software freedom is no exception. We hope these suggestions will inspire you to inform others about the importance of their freedom, privacy, and security.

Chat

When we can no longer communicate face-to-face, tools for voice and video calling often come to mind as the next best thing. But as evidenced by the size and success of the proprietary software companies that sponsor these tools, their development isn't easy. Promoting real-time voice and video chat clients remains a High Priority Project of ours. Though we may still be waiting for a truly perfect solution, there are some projects that are far enough along in their development that we can recommend them to others.

Audio calls

Mumble: Mumble is a real-time, low latency program for hosting  and joining audio conversations. Clients are available for every major  operating system, and even large rooms tend not to put too much  stress on the network. When it was time for us to go fully remote,  the FSF staff turned to Mumble as a way to have that "in-office"  feel, staying in touch in rooms dedicated to each of our teams and a  general purpose "water cooler" room.

Asterisk/SIP: When we give tours of the FSF office, people  often think we're joking when we mention that even the FSF's  conference phones run free software. But through Asterisk and our  use of the SIP protocol, it's entirely true. Although it can be  difficult to set up, it's worth mentioning that free software can  manage your traditional phone lines. At the FSF, we transfer calls  to digital extensions seamlessly with tools like Jami and  Linphone.

Video calls and presentations

Jitsi: Jitsi was a key part of LibrePlanet 2020's success.  Providing video and voice calls through the browser via WebRTC, it  also allows for presenters to share their screen in a similar way to  Zoom. And unlike Zoom, it doesn't come with serious privacy  violations or threats to user freedom. The connection between  callers is direct and intuitive, but a central server is still required  to coordinate callers and rooms. Some of these, like the Jitsi  project's own "Jitsi Meet" server, recommend proprietary browser  extensions and document sharing tools. If you're able, hosting your  own instance is the most free and reliable method.

Jami: While it's used at the FSF primarily for its SIP support, Jami (previously GNU Ring) is a solid communication client in its own right, allowing for distributed video calls, text chat, and screen sharing.

OBS: Another much-used software program this LibrePlanet was  OBS Studio. Illness, different timezones, or unforeseen travel  were no match for the solutions that OBS Studio offered. It's a flexible  tool for streaming video from multiple inputs to a Web source,  whether that's combining your webcam with conference slides, or even  your favorite free software game. At LibrePlanet, OBS allowed our  remote speakers to record their presentations while speaking in one  screen, and sharing audiovisual materials in a second window.

Text chat

XMPP: If you've ever used "Jabber," older iterations of Google  Talk or Facebook Messenger, then you've used XMPP. XMPP is a  flexible and extensible instant messaging protocol that's lately  seen a resurgence from clients like Conversations.im and  encryption schema like OMEMO. XMPP is the instant messaging  method we prefer at the FSF when we need to discuss something  privately, or in a secure group chat, as everything is sent through  servers we control and encrypted against individual staff members'  private key. Also, access to the FSF XMPP server is one of the many  benefits of our associate membership program.

IRC: Messaging services have become all the rage in office  atmospheres, but nothing about Messenger or Slack is new. In fact,  Slack (and its counterpart for video games, Discord) takes more than  a few cues from the venerable Internet Relay Chat (IRC). IRC remains  an enduring way to have a text-based chat in real-time, and as  evidenced by Web clients like The Lounge, or desktop clients  like Pidgin, it can be as stripped down or feature-rich as you  like. For a true hacker experience, you can also log into IRC using  Emacs.

Long-form discussion

Encrypted email: While it's asynchronous and maybe the most "old  school" item on our list, GPG-encrypted email is a core part of the  FSF workflow, and helps guard against prying eyes, whether they're  one room over or in an NSA compound across the country. The initial  setup can sometimes be a challenge, which is why we provide the  Email Self-Defense Guide to get you up and running.

Discourse: Discourse is the message board software that powers  the FSF associate member forum, and we couldn't be happier to  recommend it. While the concept may seem a little antiquated,  message boards remain a good way to coordinate discussions on a  particular topic. Discourse's moderation tools are intuitive and  easy to use, and it even includes achievements for users to earn!

Document Sharing

If you're unused to working remotely, finding ways to collaborate with others on a document or presentation can be a challenge. At the FSF, Etherpad is the main tool that we use to keep live meeting notes and work together on other documents. It provides all the features you need for quick collaboration, including comments, revision tracking, and exports to a variety of formats. You can host your own instance, or you can select an instance made available by others and start sharing.

File Sharing

At the FSF office, we have a common server to store our files. Not everyone has the luxury of a setup like that, and especially not due to the fast changeover from office to home. To avoid using proprietary "solutions" and disservices like Dropbox, you can turn to the widely popular Nextcloud to synchronize your text and email messages, share calendars with coworkers, and exchange files privately with your friends.

If you need something temporary, there's always Up1. Up1 is a temporary, encrypted text and image sharing program you can host locally, making sure those files you need to exchange are only there for just as long as it takes for your friend to download them. And while we don't use it ourselves, we've heard good things about the Riseup network's instance of Up1, and will occasionally suggest it to those wanting a quick and easy way to share files while retaining their freedom.

4. Bored Button - Randomly sends you to interactive websites, great for relieving a couple of minutes or to laugh at something silly, like a website that allows you to slap Captain Kirk.

5. Archive of Our Own and Fanfiction.net - These are the giants of the fanfiction writing community and are home to a vast collection of stories about your favorite characters.

6. Goodreads - This is a good place to go to find book recommendations, make lists of what you want to read, and keep track of reading goals.

1. Jessica Kellgren-Fozard - A 50s aesthetic combined with educational videos about disability. Jessica has a lovely personality and has served as a well-loved voice of the spoonie community.

2. Acoustic Trench - Videos of Acoustic music featuring a golden retriever, what’s not to like?

3. Rare Earth - This channel explores the lesser-known stories of people all around the world.

4. Simone Giertz - She builds robots that don’t work and has a lovely personality!

5. Mike Boyd - He constantly works on learning new skills and uploads his journey on his channel.

6. ElleOfTheMills - Elle Mills makes vlogs about her life. The videos are so high quality that watching them is like watching a movie.

7. Crash Course - They don’t need an introduction but this channel is good to watch while in isolation, both to learn something new and for students to keep up with their studies.

Videogames:

1. Stardew Valley - This is probably one of my favorite games. You get to run a small farm, befriend the townsfolk, and explore the many secrets in the game. Relationships in this game are lgbtq+ friendly! This game is available on most platforms and is relatively inexpensive at $10.

2. Outer Worlds - This game is brought to you by the studio that made Fallout: New Vegas. This game is beautiful and has a complex interesting storyline. All of the companion characters are well written and likable (One of which is an ace lesbian!). This game is available on the PC, Playstation, and X Box. It’s more expensive than the previous game on this list but it more than deserves the triple-A price tag of $59.99

3. Night in the Woods - This game is much more story-based than the other games on this list. The plot is wonderful and grapples with issues of mental illness and young adulthood. The price sits somewhere in the middle of #1 and #2 in this list at $19.99 and is available on PC, Mac, Linux, and Playstation 4.

4. Undertale - This is one of those games that needs no introduction. It’s a quirky pixel RPG with moral choices that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Undertale costs around $10 and is available on the Nintendo Switch, PC, and Playstation 4

5. Runescape - This is one of the oldest MMORPGs out on the market and is free to play. Runescape has an engaging crafting system and a wide variety of fun quests. While it is free to play Runescape suffers from some pay to win elements. This game is available on the PC and is in the early access phases of becoming a mobile app.

6. Albion Online - Albion Online is a large MMORPG with its strengths in its large scale PvP battles, combat system, and crafting system. This game is free to play with an optional subscription.

Mobile Apps:

1. Amino - This is a lesser-known social media app home to thousands of online communities. Fandoms, hobbies, roleplaying, and various other interests dominate the content here.

2. Animal Crossing Pocket Camp - This is a small, cutesy animal crossing game, enough to tide everyone over until new horizons releases on the 20th.

3. The Arcana - A tarot themed dating sim! Lgbtq+ friendly and filled with beautiful art. The characters are well written and the plot is filled with intrigue.

Podcasts:

1. Welcome to Night Vale - I can’t say too much about this one without spoiling it, this podcast is best listened to without knowing what to expect.
