Patriot Properties
An eventful weekend—one of several coming up this summer! I’m going to focus on one event out of several I participated in—a house tour of Patriots’ homes in Marblehead—simply because it yielded the best pictures. Having done this a couple of times myself, I am always grateful to homeowners who open up their houses to the public. As I am focusing on Marblehead, right next door to Salem, today, I…

Reminder for all you SoCal folks: I'll be interviewing powerhouse illustrator and Decemberists art-in-residence Carson Ellis this coming Saturday here in Ojai! More about it on my blog.
The venue is Bart's Books, regularly listed as one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world. It's an outdoor shop built around the former home of Richard Bartinsdale, an avid reader inspired by Parisian book carts on the banks of the Seine.

The event will be outdoors (heyoo, covid safety!) and free to the public. Come thru from 6-7pm!

See you there!

Awesome add! We’ll have copies of Briana’s newest volume in the Fantasy Pin World Series for sale before they hit book shelves! So you can get your copy signed and early!

I will say tho, in terms of things I think'd be good for getting people out and about in meatspace on a regular basis, more cities should have something like my local indie theatre* has, Mondo Mondays.
Which is, every Monday they show a crappy and cheap to license B-movie for 3 to 4 dollars admission (depending on whether or not you're a member) at 8 PM.
Before the movie, the programming director Jeff comes out onto the stage to do a little monologue about the movie's production history and some of the weird stuff in it. He's snarky, but in a way that shows a deep and abiding love of these goofy-ass films.
During the movie, people are not only allowed to but encouraged to shout things at the screen to make fun of the movie. This has lead to some local minor memes, such as "Cabbot? Cabbot?" during any scene where it's very dark due to a moment in Plan 9 from Outer Space.
The currently running one, which started at a screening of either Red Sonja or the Lou Ferrigno Hercules movie (I forget which) is the crowd chanting "IN! THE! PIT! IN! THE! PIT!" whenever a situation where someone might fall in a pit is onscreen.
Point is, as much as I love the net and hate those that'd slam its socialization as unreal, we need more opportunities for meatspace connection, and I feel like more places doing Mondo is a fine way to do it.
*The Loft in Tucson, Arizona, for those wondering.

For anyone interested, here's a livestream of a corpse flower (dubbed 'Putricia') due to bloom some time in the next 24 to 48 hours at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Sydney. We haven't had one bloom for 15 years, so people are queuing up to see. I'm thinking of braving the crowd once it starts to unfurl, but maybe I'll chicken out and just watch the stream. The blooms last only 2-3 days, less if the flower is fertilised. The putrid scent these flowers are famous for arrives only in the first few hours of the bloom.
Should I go see it? It's open from 8am to midnight, unless the weather gets too wild to queue outside the greenhouse.

Went to an Alpaca livestock show today!

There were around a hundred alpacas there and a dozen unique vendors!
It was at the American Royal in Kansas City, Mo
I highly recommend going if you’re in the area this weekend, it’s free no ticket necessary, parking is also free.
I bought some yarn and socks and collected several business cards so I can order more in the future.
There was a spinner and a woman demonstrating Atataledai, a type of Kumihimo “a gathering of threads, Japanese braiding”
These animals are so precious they make the sweetest little noises, it was so fun to watch them line up for judging.

Revolutionary Remembrance
Even more so than usual, this Labor Day weekend seemed like the end of summer to me. Actually, not just the end, but the finale. This was quite a productive summer, even though I didn’t really produce anything: there were more edits on Salem’s Centuries and the new experience of working as a guide at Historic New England’s Phillips House, but what I was really focused on was Salem’s experience of…
