NGC 253

Just 10 million light years away from our own galaxy, in the constellation of Sculptor, this spiral galaxy 70,000 light years across is also the closest starburst galaxies to us.

A starburst galaxy has a huge amount of star formation occurring, and you can see in the image above, the large amount of blue within the disk, representing the blue light of large blue young stars.

As a result, it's also one of the brightest spiral galaxies in our sky, although despite it's relatively nearby location, it is not part of our local group of galaxies, rather belonging to our neighboring group the Sculptor group.

NGC 55 (N55) is at the outer edge between our group and it's own, at just 5 million light years.

It's also home to a supermassive black hole slightly larger than our SagA* and significantly more active.

Say Hello to a Neighbour

If like me, you live in a city, you probably don't know much about your neighbours, although maybe you recognise them. IC 342 is one of all our neighbours, but you'll be forgiven for not knowing much about them.

At just 10 million light years from us, it's one of the closest galaxies, but if it wasn't for a cruel alignment with our own Milky Way's arms, it would be one of the easier galaxies to spot, but instead, it's shrouded in dust and gas and stars within our own galaxy, making it appear more red and dimmed than it would otherwise be.

Above you can see it's embedded within billions of stars in our own galaxy, obscured by dust that are dark nebula.

Sometimes referred to as the "Hidden" galaxy, it's suspected that it's had quite a pronounced impact on our local group of galaxies, including our own galaxy, through gravitational interaction.

The galaxy appears to have gone through a starburst phase quite recently, with huge clouds of diamond sparking blue giant stars in dense clouds of gas and dust, and no doubt due to such interactions.
