02/04/3311 Current system: Col 285 Sector WP-O d6-89

I did it. Gave in to the craze and started building a system. Maybe it can be a new home for some of the many displaced people during the war.

The system is called HIP 81022. It was discovered in 2005, in the early Second Dark Ages. I found out it is also known as HD 149143, as well as Rosalíadecastro, in honour of a poetess from 19th century Earth. I will certainly be trying to find and read some of her writings in between hauling trips. Currently building a little outpost (around the farthest planet, would you guess my luck). It will only have medium landing pads, so I’ll have to take the time to build a larger station somewhere. Maybe in the rings of one of the gas giants? We’ll see. It’s not going to be a large system, but I’ll work on making it a nice place to stop by.

Week 8 (Lecture Reflection) -

I was pleased to see Orchestration fundamentals covered in the lecture, as I like to treat many of the dynamic characteristics of my pad sounds (in electronic/EDM-based compositions) in a manner akin to how an orchestra would. However, as Nicole mentioned, the basics of orchestration are especially complex (which is why it is often outsourced, even by composers themselves). When combining electronic synthesisers with highly unique timbres can complicate the mix even further. Some synth sounds don't even have their own category (e.g. brass/pad/lead/strings, etc) and are what I like to refer to as "synth-isolates" – a completely unique sound that doesn't fit into conventional labelling.

Aroaceptember day 4

Yeah, I'm still doing this, I have other things planned, but I've been distracted. :C, plus scattering them around like this helps me think of other ones I like.

Anyway, someone commented on my og post about how aplatonic people are the most left out, I talked to a friend about it days ago, and I looked it up to see how I could dedicate a post to it, so I'll try my hardest here, if I get anything wrong in this, please don't hesitate to let me know! I won't bite as long as you don't.

Anyway the character I wanted to talk about on this occasion is Providence from Risk of Rain.

His brother Mithrix believed the two of them were unfit to live on that planet, as he thought the two of them were better than the other creatures and that they were destined for something grand out there. Mithrix was good with designing constructs, and Providence was good with crafting them, so Mithrix had them team up to create many things, including a portal that was going to lead them out of the planet and other places across the galaxy.

Providence did hold his brother dear, he did not dislike nor hate his brother, for his sadness to leave the planet has more to do with the next action he was about to take: betray his own brother and keep him locked up in the moon for the rest of his life.

Mithrix felt justifiably angry and betrayed by this action, his own brother would choose many creatures over him, how much would he love these creatures to betray his own brother like that?

But when he mentions that, he is blinded by rage. And even amidst his fit of blind anger, he starts to question that.

And as he spent years trapped there, only being able to witness, he realizes that what pushes Providence to grant protection to these creatures is not love, which fuels his anger and ambitions more.

Even though the creatures believe this is a gesture of love from him, what they say also states otherwise, as they do their best to express gratitude for him, their savior, but he just doesn't pay it any attention at all.

To the point he will be ready to slay any creature that takes a hold of the Beads of Fealty, as possessing them seems to represent an implicit pact between the bearer and Mithrix himself, so no matter how devoted is Providence to protecting these creatures, he will not hesitate to slay them if they hold these beads.

Ultimately, I don't think Providence is fueled by bad intentions, after all the decision to trap his brother pained him immensely, if he didn't like his brother, he would have never helped him with all those constructions, and he still cares about these creatures enough to grant them a home, but his actions are not fueled by love, not even to his own brother.

These games are just a gigantic tragedy. I wanted to hold off a bit in case RoR Returns release date was announced, but they keep avoiding to give one so I post this.

2. When does the partner realize that they're in love with Rook?

I don't think he called it "love" even to himself until she was dragged from the Fade prison, but he knew that he wanted to stay with her by the time he wrote the "If I have lost an hour this night, it is only to Rook. But lost is wrong. It is an hour found. An hour more clear than any other" logbook entry.

17. What is your Rook's favorite thing about their partner? What is the partner's favorite thing about Rook?

I think they both admire each other's thoughtfulness. Both of them are good listeners, and both (for their own reasons) make a habit of noticing the habits/likes/dislikes of others. Beyond that, if Lucanis says he will do something, then he will do it and he isn't the kind of person who manipulates the ones around him for his own entertainment. Also, she likes his sense of humor.

As for what Lucanis likes about Lenore...I think she approaches the world at large with a certain kind of nonjudgmental curiosity that intrigues him. She genuinely wants to understand things outside of her sphere, and it takes some of the pressure off of trying to explain yourself (especially when you're, you know, possessed and anticipating a certain amount of blowback for that). She's also (to him, at least) more or less an open book. I imagine growing up in the Crows, where everyone has an ulterior motive and is looking for the best advantage to take out a rival, not having to wonder about what she's really thinking is restful.

08/12/3310 Current system: Fehu

I’ve made it back to civilisation. Not quite the Bubble, mind you. I’m a few jumps away from the nearest inhabited system and 468Ly from Sol. For months, I’ve been dreaming about this day. Finally talking with real humans, sitting down to eat proper food, renting a room with a comfortable bed. It didn’t turn out quite how I was expecting. I was finally able to catch up on the news and found out that the last Titan moved closer to the core systems, and that there are Thargoids all around Sol... and around Tau Ceti. My home. And, that multiple rescue megaships have been ambushed and destroyed. Haven’t heard back from any of my family or friends after I tried to contact them.

This is overwhelming.

I just wanted a haircut and a cup of tea.

Week 6 (Lecture Reflection) – Japanese Aesthetic Principles

Week 6 covered an extensive range of compositional topics, from Wagnerian Leitmotifs to Japanese aesthetic principles. Although I am not well-versed in either of these concepts, two of the mentioned aesthetic principles piqued my interest. 1. Wabi-sabi – finding beauty in imperfection and impermanence. 2. Iki – sophisticated simplicity with a hint of sensuality. From a compositional perspective, this is something that I have been trying to adopt into my practice, particularly for drums and percussion. When I listen to other tracks, I notice a lot of subtle variation in the timing and velocity (something that my compositions lack). The concept of Wabi-Sabi's "imperfection" can be translated to a slight misalignment of MIDI information on the grid, enhancing the organic quality of a track. This reminded me of some of the discussions I've observed in the modern progressive metal scene, where people have noted that the instrumentation's technical complexity and musicians' virtuosity have reached a point where everything sounds too perfect. Now, imperfection has become a somewhat nostalgic quality that people reminisce about when discussing older recordings in these genres.

Entry 01

This is Junior Researcher [REDACTED].

My team of four and I were dispatched to [ADDRESS REDACTED] following a distressed call received by our higher-ups. The origin of the call was not disclosed to us. The house, supposedly abandoned, was situated in the midst of a bustling neighborhood. Yet, upon entry, we discovered it was fully furnished, complete with children's toys scattered about and a meal set on the table, as if a family of three had just stepped out.

Curiously, the neighbors insisted the house had been abandoned for 20 years since the last tenants moved out. They spoke of a housekeeper who tended to the property, but none could recall any details about this mysterious caretaker. It was as if they were all part of some collective amnesia, aware of something they couldn't quite grasp.

Further investigation is required.

For now, we've taken up the offer of a nice couple who provided us with spare rooms and even a rollaway cot, stating they believed 5 beds wouldn't suffice. When I assured them that five was indeed enough, they appeared momentarily confused, as if they had expected six of us. Again, I assured them there were only five in our group, and they accepted this, albeit with a lingering air of uncertainty.
