Laetitia Sadier & Radio Outernational Live Show Review: 3/12, Empty Bottle, Chicago

Laetitia Sadier
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Laetitia Sadier's set Tuesday night at Empty Bottle was a mix of idealism, determination, and empathy. Such a combination exemplifies the connotation of the very title of her first solo album in 7 years, Rooting For Love (Drag City). Like her work with Stereolab, Rooting For Love employs a wide array of instrumentation--guitar, bass, synth, organ, trombone, vibraphone, live and programmed drums, zither, vocals--to present songs that are simple-sounding in execution, but deceptively complex. For every foray into lounge funk, there's an off-kilter psychedelic freak-out; in combination with Sadier's spirituality and collectivism, it makes for an album that you can deeply explore as much as you can vibe to.
Tuesday, Sadier, on stage alone, pointed to her synthesizer and joked, "This is the band...It's the same every night." In a way, playing to recordings and samples seems to occupy its own, different level of difficulty, as you can't as easily improvise your way out of messing up. Thankfully, Sadier not only nailed it, but employed a looper and processed her scraggly guitar playing to build up and tear down her compositions, adding unexpected chaos for those in the crowd who had voraciously consumed the new record. "ProtéïformunitĂ©" featured washy noise and a drum beat, Sadier immersing herself in the music to the point of dancing, as she sang mantras like "Lâobjectif est de limoger lâignorance, dâinterrompre le cycle sans fin de la souffrance,â or, "The goal is to remove ignorance, to interrupt the endless cycle of suffering." Again, as with Stereolab, Sadier showed that visionary ideas can sound, simply, pleasant.
Of course, while you wouldn't describe Sadier as a realist, she's also certainly unafraid to confront, and Tuesday, she performed the two most provocative tracks from Rooting For Love. "Don't Forget You're Mine", co-written with Veronique Vincent (of Belgian avant-rock band Aksak Maboul), tells the story of an academic couple whose more-successful husband is threatened by his wife's sudden success to the point where he torments her with psychological and physical abuse. It was here where Sadier warped her beatific guitar playing into something more fuzzy, as if to emphasize the skin-crawling nature of what she was singing about, contrasting the lovely timbre of her voice. On the studio version, she repeats, from the point of view of the abuser, "Get up, babe!" over siren-like instrumentation, like a plea to society to eliminate internal and external toxicity. "Cloud 6", meanwhile, started with chopping and screwing her operatic vocals, her trombone pulsating on the off-beat of the arpeggiated synth line, before turning more clear. Sadier waxed about how the process of fear encapsulates a wholesale turning away from humanity; "How can you be seen and known and loved when you have your armor on," she asked? The song ended with her most frank declaration: "This armor is keeping you from the gifts I've given you / I'm not fucking around / You're halfway dead." In the context of not only Sadier's songs that decry capitalism and war, but the world today in general, "Cloud 6" was a call to wake up.

Radio Outernational's Aaron Shapiro, Kenthaney Redmond, Hunter Diamond, & Wayne Montana
Opening for Sadier was local quintet Radio Outernational, who features three current members of funk-punk heroes The Eternals. While Radio Outernational haven't released any recorded music, they've been playing around town since last year, clear in their chemistry. Flutist and saxophonist Hunter Diamond and flutist Kenthaney Redmond effectively harmonized, one often trailing the other, especially on the songs that employed dual flute. Guitarist Aaron Shapiro offered funky licks rife with swirling wah wahs and prickly stabs. The rhythm section, bassist Wayne Montana and drummer Areif Sless-Kitain, propelled the slinky tunes, providing a bed for the other three players to flourish. Radio Outernational was a wholly appropriate opener for Sadier, as it was almost like they were the physical manifestation of the type of cosmic cooperation she sings and dreams about.

Itâs officially summer and for our family that means many nights at the baseball field. This is great for which ever kid is playing. And for me because I love watching them play. But it doesnât take long before the other two are driving me crazy. So when I was asked to get some Hot Wheels loving friends together to check out the new Double Dare Snare, I knew just what to do. We packed up the Hot Wheels and some snacks and planned to keep the boys and their friends busy. The set was easy enough for my eight year old to put together. And after a few tries they were off and racing. They did find that a car had to be sort of heavy to hold enough momentum to make the loop but once we worked out SHARING the vehicles that worked, they kept themselves busy snacking and racing for the entire game.
I really thought this set was pretty cool. Its kind of long but long straight pieces come apart easily for storage. The snare part is really cool. Now doubt as to the winner of the race as its nabbed up in the snare. Just when you think there canât possibly be anything new in car setsâŠ.
Double Dare Snare allows boys to race 1:64 scale Hot WheelsÂź side by side, down a twisty track, through a hair-raising loop and over a jump at the edge of a steep canyon. Inspired by the real life crew of Team Hot Wheelsâą drivers, this daring stunt set proves that two vehicles are better than one.
The winning vehicle in the Double Dare Snareâą is carefully scooped to safety by a quick snapping snare and saved from a perilous fall. Meanwhile, the slower car must attempt the harrowing jump or plummet to the ground trying.
To keep the race fair, a distinct starting point is strategically built in so each race is âcleanâ.

Best Guitar Loop Pedal Reviews
TC Electronic Ditto X4 Looper Effects Guitar Pedalâ
With a very simple and intuitive design, a high level of user-friendliness, and a plethora of effects, the TC Electronic Ditto X4 Looper Effects Guitar Pedal is often regarded as being one of the best in the business.
Features
One of the really important features of the TC Electronic Ditto X4 Looper Effects Guitar Pedal is that it is so user-friendly. To make life much simpler, it comes with only the most essential looping features. One single knob allows you to record, stop, undo, redo, and erase loops and additions to your loops, and everything can be accessed via foot command. It has to be one of the easiest to use guitar loop pedals out there at this time.
The TC Electronic Ditto X4 Looper Effects Guitar Pedal comes complete with the ability to make 1 or 2 loops at the same time. In terms of special features to add some creativity and ingenuity to the mix, you get dual-loop tracks, two loop modes, 7 loop FX, and a loop decay as well. For the comparatively low price, it has many more effects than we would usually expect.
Moreover, the TC Electronic Ditto X4 Looper Effects Guitar Pedal is also a great option for live performances, as it comes with stereo I/O and MIDI sync, along with 24-bit uncompressed audio for the ultimate in sound quality. On a side note, there is an internal memory feature so it will remember loops even when power is shut off.
Pros
Great sound quality
Ideal for live performances
7 loop FX
Plethora of special effects
Super intuitive and user-friendly
Durable build â solid shell
Cons
Some problems with the firmware/software

BOSS Loop Station Guitar Pedal
The BOSS Loop Station Guitar Pedal is designed for the true recording artist. Itâs a serious piece of equipment with a ton of effects. It might be a bit more complicated to use than the previous pedal we looked at, and nearly three times the price, but it is super-advanced and highly functional.
Features
Something which stands out about the BOSS Loop Station Guitar Pedal is that it comes complete with triple stereo loops. In other words, you can make up to three loops at once, and each one is individually controllable. What is also neat about this loop pedal is that it will automatically start recording when you play your instrument, plus there is a count-in mode to provide you with one bar of rhythm before you begin.
The BOSS Loop Station Guitar Pedal allows you to record up to 3 hours of loops on its internal storage, which is quite impressive, so you can add effects as you go. This looper does feature a microphone input for audio, and when it comes to creating some really cool pieces, it also has 16 onboard effects optimized for looping. Each loop track even comes with its own fader pedal.
Of course, the BOSS Loop Station Guitar Pedal is fully controllable through the foot pedal, so you donât really have to use your hands at all. The pedal board is designed to be ultra-wide, making it much easier to use when you are in the middle of recording. Thereâs a USB port to import and export loops, and you can import files as well.
Pros
3 full loops tracks
3 hours of internal storage
16 looping effects
Dedicated fader per loop
Wide foot board for ease of use
Variety of intuitive effects and functions
Cons
Very expensive
Lifespan is not all that long

VOX Lil' Looper Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal
This is a much smaller, more simplistic, and easy-to-use guitar loop pedal. It comes in at well under the price of both other pedals on the list and is designed for fairly basic use.
Features
The VOX Lil' Looper Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal comes complete with a dual pedal design so you can easily switch between recording, playback, and overdubbing on two independent loops. Moreover, it can record 90 seconds on both loops, not to mention infinite overdubbing, redo, and undo. Moreover, the dual pedals are very easy to use, and this loop pedal as a whole is designed so that anyone can get the hang of it.
The VOX Lil' Looper Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal has a special Quantize feature to allow you to create precise length phrases and to sync two loops to a tempo. Whatâs also neat is that it comes with a mic input and an instrument input, so you can loop one or both sources simultaneously.
Whatâs really convenient about the VOX Lil' Looper Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal is that if you donât want to, or cannot plug it into AC power, it can run using DC power, although the 7-hour battery life is not overly impressive.
The fact that this small and simple guitar loop pedal comes complete with 12 special looping effects is quite impressive. Between the pedal, mod, and simulation effects, there are more than enough to create some killer tracks. When it comes down to it, this particular guitar loop pedal may not the very most advanced option on the market, but it does work very well, it has great audio quality, itâs super user friendly, and it wonât break the bank either.
Pros
Very user-friendly
Ideal for basic use
Can run on batteries
12 looping effects
Dual loop tracks
Small and compact
Great price
Cons
Not the best for live performances
Not overly advanced
Somewhat limited durability
CHECK LATEST PRICE ON AMAZON.COM
Final Verdict
When all is said and done, all 3 of these guitar loop pedals are fantastic in their own way. However, if we were to choose one over the others, it would have to be the BOSS Loop Station Guitar Pedal. The reason we would choose this one is simply because it has the most loops, the most effects, and the highest functionality. Yes, it might be expensive, but as far as we can see, thereâs nothing better.

The 9 Best Highlights From NAMM 2020
The 9 Best Highlights From NAMM 2020: via LANDR Blog
Itâs the most wonderful time of the yearâfor music gear news and announcements.
The NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) 2020 trade show just concluded.
With every serious gear company in attendance, there was so much breaking news that itâs hard to keep track of every single juicy reveal and teaser.
Thatâs why weâre going through the top 9 most exciting NAMM highlights of 2020.
1. UAD LUNA
Iâll dive right in with one of the biggest and most surprising announcements of NAMM 2020. Universal Audio is building a DAW!âor something very close to it.
UAD LUNA is the groundbreaking new recording environment based on the respected analog-modelling technology in the Apollo series of interfaces.
UAD LUNA is the groundbreaking new recording environment based on the respected analog-modelling technology in the Apollo series of interfaces.
There arenât too many details available yet, but LUNA will integrate deeply with the UAD Apollo hardware.
It will also have multi-track tape emulation and Neve-style summing built directly into the mixing environment.
And perhaps the most exciting revealâvirtual instruments! If UADâs plugin expertise is anything to go on, their instrument plugins should be top notch.
2. Behringer synth reveals and releases
Behringer has been hard at work disrupting the synthesizer market in the last few cycles.
But this yearâs showing was particularly mind-blowing. Behringerâs upcoming releases could put some of the most sought after electronic instruments of all time in your home studio.
ï»ż
Hereâs what Behringer announced or debuted at NAMM 2020
2600 (ARP 2600 clone!)
RD-6 (TR-606 clone)
System 55 Eurorack modules (Moog modular clones)
System 100 Eurorack modules (Roland modular clones)
The extremely low prices Behringer have achieved are raising some eyebrows. But thereâs no doubt that their analog synthesis gear is the most accessible on the market.
The extremely low prices Behringer have achieved are raising some eyebrows.
Will Uli take over the world?
3. Great things from Korg
Korg has also been busy creating equipment with high expectations from the gear community.
The Korg Wavestate is a welcome update to the well-loved 90s era Wavetstation that promises even more powerful multi-timbral wavetable synthesis.
There are full-sized versions of the MS-20 coming in four different colours, intriguing DIY kits and even an update to the legendary Keytar!
But Korgâs most exciting news might be the no compromises reissue of the ARP 2600.
This beast of a monosynth packs all the enormous sound of the original into more practical package with modern conveniences.
But itâs certainly on the high end of the price range at a sticker shocking âŹ3999.
With the announcement of a Behringer version at roughly the same time it will be interesting to see how Korgâs spot-on recreation that spares no expense will fare against a much cheaper edition.
Just when we thought it was all over Korg teased the Opsix, a brand new 6-operator FM synth that was only displayed behind glassâexciting!
Just when we thought it was all over Korg teased the Opsix, a brand new 6-operator FM synth that was only displayed behind glass.
ï»ż
4. Fender/Squier offsets, paranormals and alternate universe
It was a spectacular year for unlikely combos and non-standard configurations over in Fender-land.
CBS era Teles back with a 60s thinline with classic stylings and the smart looking 70s custom featuring an all new take on the Seth Lover Wide Range Humbucker pickup.
80s shredders are also seeing a resurgence with the retro-styled, Floyd Rose equipped Limited HM Strat.
The Parallel Universe line continued its convention defying weirdness with all sorts of unexpected mashups:
Spark-o-maticâJazzmaster with Firebird vibes
Jazz Stratsâodd looking combination of Stratocaster and Jazzmaster
Tele Magicoâstylish 3-saddle Tele with Fender gold foil pickups.
Uptown StratâaFender McCarty?
Troublemaker Telesâ80s Les Paul stylings on a Tele
Maverick DoradoâVintage 60s mojo
ï»ż
The affordable Player series revived the late 70âs âLeadâ models in single coil and humbucker configurations, as well as some beloved short scale offsets like the Mustang and Duo-sonic.
Meanwhile, Squierâs own Paranormal 2020 series leaked, with product pages surfacing for P90 equipped baritone and thinline Cabronitas, offset Teles, dual humbucking Supersonics, Tornados and pastel Cyclone IIs.
If that werenât enough, Squier Starcasters are on the way at a ridiculously affordable price-pointâjust $399 USD for the well-appointed Classic Vibe edition.
It was a spectacular year for unlikely combos and non-standard configurations over in Fender-land.
5. Antelopeâs enormous converter
Antelope is pushing the channel count envelope again with an unprecedented 64 channels of AD/DA in a single converter unit.
The 2U behemoth Galaxy 64 is also the most powerful configuration of Antelopeâs Synergy Core DSP platform yet, boasting 12 ARM chips for real time mix processing.
I canât imagine too many workflows where all 64 channels would be in use simultaneously, but the technology is seriously impressive.
The Galaxy 64 also confirms another one of the most prevalent trends seen at NAMM this year and in the interface market in generalânetwork capabilities.
Antelopeâs flagship sports network connectivity over the Dante standard, something weâve seen from Focusrite, Avid and others in the past.
6. The Eurorack boom continues
The Eurorack scene shows no signs of slowing down, despite persistent claims of a growing market bubble.
Behringerâs aggressive entry into the market may be shaking things up, but boutique manufacturers are still developing unique and great-sounding modules.
One of the most exciting developments came from the guitar pedal universe.
The Empress Zoia Euroburo edition brings all the power of the Canadian companyâs semi-modular digital sandbox to the format.
Here are the Eurorack highlights from NAMM 2020
ElectroSmith Daisy
Animal Factory Orobas Tube VCA
Earthquaker Afterneath Module
WMD Performance Mixer
Bastl Instruments/Caspr Electronics Waver
Frap Tools Brenso
The Eurorack scene shows no signs of slowing down, despite persistent claims of a growing market bubble.
7. Pedal sized guitar amps
The recent boom in compact power amplifiers has resulted in lots of interesting gear, including the powerful pedal/lunchbox sized amps on display at NAMM 2020
Each promise big tone in tiny, easily giggable packages:
Orange Terror Stamp is the tiniest terror from Orange yet.
The Victory V4 Amp is a powered edition of the British boutique builderâs popular Victory preamp.
Bluguitar Amp X is a pedalboard amp designed to create great vintage guitar tones in a small and portable format.
8. Innovative boutique pedals
Left field guitar pedals have been another fixture of the NAMMscape for years.
2020 is no different with innovators like Chass Bliss, Pigtronix, Walrus and Beetronics debuting exciting new offerings.
ï»ż
Here are my picks for the most interesting guitar pedals released this year at NAMM:
Chase Bliss and Meris collaborate on the CXM1978, a pedal version of the legendary Lexicon 224 digital reverb
Pigtronix offers its respected Infinity Looper technology in a compact form factor
Walrus debuts a super hi-fi digital delay
Rainger FX made a pedal that somehow creates overdrive by analyzing liquid (???)
Old Blood Noise Endeavours Visitor lets you explore modulation in parallel.
Beetronics releases an aggressive fuzzy overdrive with their signature (and bizarre) insect stylings.
Left field guitar pedals have been another fixture of the NAMMscape for years.
9. The return of the stage piano
The humble stage piano is getting a fresh lease on life with new models from Dexibell, Viscount, Roland, Yamaha and Korg.
The Yamaha YC61 looks especially exciting with its slider-style drawbar registration, sample based instruments and onboard realtime FM synthesis for classic DX tines.
The Viscount Legend 70s offers an interesting take on the format with an intriguing modular concept and retro styling.
Each piano will include a basic module, but expansions can be added later to create the perfect stage piano for your needs.
NAMMaste
NAMM is an exciting time of year for gear aficionados and music tech fans. With all the fresh releases and breaking news, itâs easy to get lost in the flow of new products.
Who knows, one of them will make it into your workflow in the coming year.
