IIoT Helps Oil Companies Weather Market Fluctuations | Machfu IIoT Solution
In late April 2020, crude oil prices temporarily dropped into negative territory, shocking oil industry analysts who had never witnessed a situation where sellers were theoretically paying customers to take oil off their hands. While the negative price of oil was a temporary blip, it highlights the importance of finding cost-saving measures in the oil and gas industry.
Machfu IIoT Solution’s low-power industrial gateway is one way that oil and gas companies can cut costs. It saves money two ways: by using edge computing power to operate oil pumps more efficiently and by using less power to operate the gateway itself. There are other technology solutions that can connect pumps and other equipment to the cloud, but only Machfu IIoT Solution does it using significantly less power.
Oil operations are by nature physically large and spread out. Bringing oil field assets online makes it much easier to monitor their performance, change operating set points, and anticipate maintenance and repair needs ahead of equipment failure. Using the Machfu IIoT gateway, operators can analyze a number of parameters from a smart phone or desktop, as opposed to having to go out in the field.
Machfu IIoT Solutions:
Improve production efficiency through integration with pump hardware and data analytics using the best practices of modern security
Reduce downtime by protecting motors and mechanical components
Optimize OPEX and address aging infrastructure through remote monitoring and web services
Facilitate asset management and long-term planning to stay ahead of challenges

Industrial IoT development process and post deployment support

Like all application development the process begins with defining requirements. The concept of an application is different between consumer IoT and Industrial IoT. Examples of consumer applications include remote setting of home temperature, health monitoring through Fitbit etc. Examples of industrial applications include device drivers for connecting to specific industrial wireless sensors or controllers, frequency of data reports, specific security configuration etc. In consumer IoT, the consumer is very active in the application process in terms of using touch screen, setting configuration elements and so on. Industrial devices such as sensors and controllers cannot directly participate in that manner. That’s what makes industrial IoT so complex even though it appears deceptively simple. Often customers and IoT companies misjudge the complexity of an application because the requirements appear benign in terms of implementation. But to get the flexibility of consumer IoT without active participation from the devices is anything but straightforward in terms of implementation. Machfu has developed a set of tools that make the application creation process rapid once a good set of requirements are created. The deployment cycle is considerable reduced due to this.
Post deployment Machfu uses well proven device management tools for Industrial application and development platform management. This includes security updates and patches, platform updates as well as application features updates. All these can be implemented across the whole population or a subset of the population. Its strictly version controlled so that the behavior and performance of each device is known. Machfu’s preferred business model is to provide end-to-end service to customers and that includes alarms, alerts and notifications. For example, if a device in the field is having trouble connecting to the cellular network an SMS or email is sent to the customer. Diagnostic support is also provided. Sometimes the problems can be solved remotely while at other times a site visit may be needed. Site visits will usually be needed for hardware problems while software issues can often be fixed remotely.

How necessary is Industrial IoT Application for your business?
Since the era of Industrialization, the industrial sector has been constantly expanding with opportunity and growth. With technology increasingly playing the roles, people once did, industries today focus on more output in less time. This is where Industrial IoT Applications come in. If you are looking to automate industrial operations using sensors or controllers, then Internet-of-Things and cloud-based systems are definitely the best way to approach this.
Think of IoT as the smartphone for your machines. The IoT application helps you communicate smartly and securely with your network of machines, seamlessly connecting both legacy systems and cloud-based platforms; thus, lowering the overall cost of the whole process. Automation can be done in many ways – from solving specific operational use cases to providing the ability to expand and further scale in the future.
More often than not, businesses make the simple mistake of solving the immediate problem and don’t think about emerging use cases in the future. It’s when the additional needs and use cases crop up, that’s when you realize that the purpose built systems for immediate problems don’t expand easily. Thus, going back to square one of implementing a new system. Which again consumes time and resources to implement. And the best way to avoid all of this is through IoT and modern web services.
A truly automated system is one that not only solves your immediate problems but also looks after potential future ones. This leads to considerable cost savings in middleware and integration spent in automation projects.
Additionally, IoT automates the whole system and helps you remotely access it and configure it according to your needs. This saves a lot of time in field visits and device management. For example, imagine one of your machines is having a problem starting up. Obviously, you would have to make a field visit and check it out yourself so that you reach the root of the problem and sort it out. But this process takes time and often, in these kinds of situations, time is equal to money. Now imagine if you could remotely control, diagnose and troubleshoot your machine at the same time. That would save you a lot of time and subsequently, money.
With IoT applications, you will be able to configure, diagnose, troubleshoot and monitor remotely all through one application. This makes industrial IoT applications a must-have tool in every industry.
