The plot of The Magic Flute is so dumb. It's apparently the result of a last-minute rewrite to please the Masons, and it's why Act 1 and Act 2 are so different from each other.
But the music is so good, and because I've listened to recordings of the opera since I was probably about 5, the music just makes me happy. I've seen the opera live and in recordings at least 10 times (excluding the Classical Kids cassette I listened to dozens of times when I was little). Papageno, Pamina, and Tamino are some of my emotional-support dumbasses.
