In 1971, Massimo and Lella Vignelli designed a modular foam seating system but it was never produced. The system consisted of circular shapes that nested together to form an infinite number of seating configurations. Each piece would be made of foam with fabric coverings with zippers to attach everything together so it would stay put. The fabric cover would be removeable for cleaning.
This was around the same time the Vignellis were designing showrooms and exhibitions for Knoll who had acquired the Gavina Collection which included a foam modular seating system by Sebastian Matta. Although his system was much more organic in shape, perhaps they were inspired to give it a try with more geometric shapes?
In the archive we have the painted wooden models of the seating, vintage images, drawings and some correspondence.
Scroll through to see more about this conceptual Vignelli-designed seating system and also the Matta foam seating system on display in the Vignelli designed Knoll Au Louvre exhibition (1972) and the Knoll Gavina Group showroom (1968). Unfortunately, it was never made but we would have love to give it a try!

Drawings of possible seating configurations 7. snapshot of model in archives 8. Knoll correspondence regarding making prototypes 9. clipping of Massimo and Lella Vignelli in Gavina showroom with Matta modular seating 10. vintage 35mm slide of Matta seating at Knoll Au Louvre exhibition

Party Time with Creatives
List 5 creatives you would invite to a party.
Morag Myerscough - Born in Holloway, north London in 1963, Morag Myerscough is the multi-award winning creator of Studio Myerscough. Morag’s mantra is ‘make happy those who are near and those who are far will come’. Morag has always lived in the city and has been fascinated by how colour pattern and words can change urban environments and people’s perceptions of spaces into places. From schools and hospitals to cultural hubs and town centres, Morag transforms public spaces by creating engaging experiences for everyone.
Jessica Hische - Jessica Nicole Hische is an American lettering artist, illustrator, author, and type designer. After attaining a degree in graphic design and interactive design from Tyler School of Art, she worked with design firms like Headcase Design and Louise Fili. She was one of the first of a new generation of letterers and the present-day flourishing of the lettering arts can in part be traced back to her emergence.
Massimo Vignelli - Massimo Vignelli was an Italian designer who worked in a number of areas including packaging, houseware, furniture, public signage, and showroom design. He was the co-founder of Vignelli Associates, with his wife, Lella. He strictly adopted the Modernists tradition of design in his work and based his artwork on the idea of simplicity which manifested through his use of rudimentary geometric designs.
Claude Monet - Oscar-Claude Monet was a French painter and founder of impressionist painting who is seen as a key precursor to modernism, especially in his attempts to paint nature as he perceived it. Throughout his long life, which spanned the years between 1840 and 1926, Monet would progress from drawing amusing caricatures of friends to capturing the elusive nuances of natural scenes in various attitudes of light and colour.
Walt Disney - Walter Elias Disney was an American animator, film producer and entrepreneur. A pioneer of the American animation industry, he introduced several developments in the production of cartoons. As a film producer, he holds the record for most Academy Awards earned and nominations by an individual.
What kind of location/food/dress code/style of party you would host?
Somewhere in Europe with a good view of nature, both plants and sea, and some civilisation/buildings. Maybe in the village or countryside with the dinner being on a balcony. The food would be a variety of European cuisine (France, Netherlands, Greece, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Spain) with a main meal, sides, desserts and drinks. The dress code and style would be spring themed, blossoming, elegant, refreshing, and peaceful.
Make a visual map/mood board of the event theme you would apply for this party.
